An expert shares how you can get a spa therapist job onboard a luxury yacht

Spa therapist jobs onboard the world’s most luxurious superyachts are highly coveted, and for good reason too. Indeed, not only do you get to work amidst luxurious surroundings, but you also have the opportunity to travel to some of the world’s most stunning destinations, thanks to exciting itineraries that could see you working in the blue-water havens of the Mediterranean one month, to traversing the ice-filled waters of Antarctica the following.

Yachts are increasingly expanding in size, offering an ever-growing roster of luxurious state-of-the-art amenities. A recent trend towards wellness has seen a growing demand for spa therapists on superyachts with luxurious spas and wellness centres now becoming di rigueur.

Louise Overend of YPI CREW recruits yacht crew for some of the world’s most exclusive mega yachts. Here she explains how you can get a coveted yacht spa therapist job .

What qualifications do you need to apply for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht?

“In order to get a spa therapist job onboard a yacht, you will need to have a recognised spa therapist qualification. Applicants will also need to have completed the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping course, often referred to as the STCW. This course covers basic safety training required by all seafarers who are working onboard commercial ships or superyachts. Applicants will also need a valid seafarer’s medical fitness certificate, such as an ENG1 or equivalent, which shows that they are fit to work on a seagoing vessel and perform duties at sea.

“Ideally you will also have some sea-based spa experience, such as working on a cruise ship, but you can also be considered if you only have land-based experience. Yacht spas are some of the most luxurious in the world, so you will be confident working to an extremely high standard, providing five-star service. You will also be knowledgeable on all the latest spa treatments and trends. What are some of the benefits of working on a superyacht?

“As a spa therapist on a superyacht you will get to work with some of the very best products in the industry, whilst also offering sumptuous treatments limited only by the imagination. Many yacht crew don’t have to pay tax, including UK residents, making a spa therapist job onboard a luxury yacht a great way to save.”

How can people progress their career whilst working on a superyacht?

“Most people will start-off applying for an entry level spa therapist job onboard a yacht where they will likely have to help with other housekeeping duties whilst the spa is not in use. These roles are typically on smaller yachts. As they progress through their career and gain more experience, yacht spa therapists will have the opportunity to work on much larger yachts where they will likely be one of a dedicated team of spa therapists. These yachts will employ a spa manager to oversee a team of spa therapists and the smooth running of the spa.”

What are some of the challenges of a spa therapist job onboard a yacht?

“While some of the world’s luxury superyachts dedicate a large area to an entire wellness centre, smaller yachts often have limited space, often with room for just a table. So, when applying for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht you will need to be someone who is highly adaptable. Many of the spa therapists on smaller yachts will act in a more mobile capacity, offering treatments to guests in their rooms. Additionally, as your location is never static, yacht spa therapists often adjust their treatments to their surroundings. For example, you may offer treatments designed to treat overexposure to the sun when in a sunny destination, alternatively, if you are cruising around the Atlantic, you may offer a treatment designed to nourish and rehydrate skin that has become dry due to the cold climate.”

What character traits do you need to successfully apply for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht?

“As mentioned above, you need to be highly adaptable to adjust to your surroundings. In addition to this you also need to excel in customer service, have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the latest treatments and trends in wellness, and be able to handle the most demanding of clients. Ultimately the attention to clients and excellent treatment experience is exactly the same on a yacht as it is in a luxurious land-based spa. Additionally you will need to be a team player and an energetic professional who is able to stay calm in stressful situations.”

How much does a spa therapist job onboard a yacht pay?

“A base salary for entry level yacht spa therapist jobs is typically around 3,500 euro per month. Spa therapists working on yacht charters can expect to earn around 3,000 euro per month, however they will also get an equal share of charter tips. Whether you have applied for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht that is private or charter, the role will include return flights, medical insurance, accommodation onboard in a shared cabin, toiletries, and all food cooked by the yacht’s private chef.”

Spa facilities and services onboard superyachts are increasingly a central part of the indulgent experience offered to guests. The Spa Manager leads the delivery of ultra-luxurious treatments for owners and guests onboard a superyacht.

Superyacht Spa Manager positions are usually found on superyachts over 90m |  300ft in length. The variety of roles and responsibilities for a Spa Manager include managing the entire spa and its team. On new-build yachts, there can be up to six Spa Therapists or Spa Stews.

What does a Spa Manager do? | Spa Manager Job Description

The role of a Spa Manager includes managing an entire spa area onboard a superyacht with the help of a team of Spa Therapists . The central goal for the entire Spa team is to pamper guests with a selection of some of the most luxurious treatments available. As a Superyacht Spa Manager, the role also involves designing the spa treatment menu, picking the luxury products used, and staying on top of the latest spa and health trends.

It’s important to remember that additional duties often include helping out in other interior departments with housekeeping, laundry or service.

The responsibilities of a Spa Manager include:

Provide treatments to guests and owners on request

Manage a team of Spa Therapists

Designing the spa’s treatment menus

Providing treatments to guests and owners on request

Informing guests of spa treatments and customizing them to suit guests’ needs

Performing various massage techniques

Conducting various skin treatments according to clients’ needs, such as peels, facials, and skin rejuvenation treatments

Providing manicures and pedicures

Offering clients advice on cosmetic and skincare products

Overseeing the spa’s inventory and ordering new products as needed

Cleaning and sanitizing work areas and sterilizing all instruments and equipment before each use

Continuous learning to stay on top of all the latest spa, health and beauty trends

Assisting the Interior Department team in their housekeeping, laundry or service duties as needed

Soft and hard skills required to be a Spa Manager

Great communication and people skills are very important in this role as Spa Managers need to be confident in communicating with guests about their needs and recommend the treatments that would be the best fit for them. Along with that, they need to communicate and manage their team of Spa Therapists.

It goes without saying that, to work as a Spa Manager onboard a superyacht, one needs a recognised spa qualification, land-based experience working in a high-end spa and, ideally, some yachting experience.

The skills of a successful yacht Spa Manager include:

Sound knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and different massage techniques

Knowledge of skin biology, skin physiology, and cosmetic chemistry

Skills concerning beauty treatments such as facials, scrubs, manicures, pedicures, etc.

Excellent physical stamina

Ability to manage and lead a team

The ability to work flexible hours

Excellent communication skills

Sociable and confident

Good sense of hygiene

Sensitivity and understanding toward the guest’s needs

Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht 

All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

All You Need To Know About Massages On Board Charter Yachts

There are few things more relaxing than a massage on the sundeck of a luxury yacht while breathing in the refreshing sea air and soaking up the idyllic surrounds, and with this in mind, we have put together a guide on what to expect from a massage on your  yacht charter .  

Offering unparalleled opportunities for rest, respite and relaxation, a luxury yacht charter provides the perfect setting to undertake a massage and spa regime, ensuring you return home fully recharged and rejuvenated.  

And as advancements in yacht design are made, a growing number of superyachts are equipped with bigger and better health and wellness facilities, ranging from saunas and steam rooms to hair salons, hydrotherapy baths and private treatment rooms.

Massages, however, remain one of the most requested treatments from charter guests and so YachtCharterFleet answers a few questions on what can be expected from a pamper session on your charter vacation.

Who will be my massage therapist?

The demand for crew members trained to offer massages as an extra service has risen in recent years, and charter guests may well find that a member of the steward team are able to offer some form of relaxing massage.

A few superyachts with larger spa facilities, however, will have their own permanent team of beauty therapists such as the 90m/295ft superyacht ‘Lauren L’ , and the luxury and convenience of having a full-time professional on board is definitely an attractive prospect.

Fortunately, if the yacht you plan to charter is without a therapist, your charter broker will have the contacts to make this possible, whether you wish to have one for the duration of your stay or to schedule in a mobile therapist for a couple of sessions.  

Opting for a live-aboard therapist comes with many benefits such as ensuring the crew remains free of extra duties, having an experienced specialist trained in several techniques at your service for the entire day and eliminating the last-minute rush to find a good therapist based nearby your next port of call.

Where will my massage take place?

A large selection of charter yachts now boast spa facilities to rival their on-land counterparts, and these are likely to have a dedicated massage therapy room for the upmost comfort and ease.

This does not, however, restrict the places where your pamper session can take place, nor does it mean massages cannot take place without an on-board spa.

A deck or interior area such as a spare cabin can easily be transformed into a temporary spa using a mobile massage bed and decorations such as candles to set the mood.

In fact, it is great to have some degree of flexibility as, when underway, massages are best moved to the location where the yacht moves the least, which is the lower deck aft, in order to avoid seasickness.

Sitting upright on the sundeck and indulging in a foot massage works well too.

What service and treatments can I expect?

Charter guests can expect the same high levels of treatment and professionalism as they would receive at a luxury spa on land, with the ultimate aim to relax, rejuvenate and chase away all aches, pains and stresses remaining.   

Popular treatments include deep-tissue and sports massages, anti-stress and anti-fatigue therapy, Thai and Swedish massages, reflexology and Indian head massages.

Treatments can, of course, be adapted to the sea surroundings for a more personalised experience. For example, problems specifically related to being at sea include overexposure to the sun and skin dryness caused by the salt water and wind, meaning moisturising treatments will be high on the agenda.

A variety of other wellbeing professionals are also available to enhance your charter vacation, including beauty therapists skilled in facials, hair and make-up, and yoga, Pilates and fitness instructors.

What superyachts have spa facilities?

Scores of yachts on the charter market are equipped with spa facilities, but below are three examples of the best available to give you a taster of what is possible.

Among the top yachts dedicated to health and wellness is the 95m/312ft superyacht KISMET . Located deep in the Lurssen -build, the spa is formed of dark stones and juxtaposed textures such as smooth rocks, glass and a variety of wooden surfaces for a meditative atmosphere, with facilities including a Hamman, spa pool, cold plunge pool, steam shower and massage room.

In contrast, the whole of the sundeck on board the 73m/239ft superyacht ‘Grace E’  is designed as a spa and wellness deck. Treatment rooms, including a hair salon, boast soothing sandy tones, while the fully-equipped gymnasium offers panoramic views. There is also a plunge pool and plenty of sunning opportunities.

Spa facilities on the 85m/279ft superyacht SOLANDGE , meanwhile, span across her bridge deck aft. A spacious sauna, steam room and beauty salon connects to a gym and outdoor swimming pool, and the massage room is sure to wow thanks to a colour shifting glass-bubble wall, which creates the perfect ambience.

I tutored the children of Russia's elite amid the backdrop of war. One teenager said he had his own massage therapist.

• I used to teach the children of Russian oligarchs and politicians.
• Our classrooms were penthouse apartments, yachts, and mansions in exclusive Moscow suburbs.
• The outbreak of war in Ukraine revealed just how isolated the kids were. 

This essay is based on the recollections of Cameron Manley, 24, a news fellow at Business Insider who previously worked as a private tutor in Moscow and, following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Monaco. The names of students have been changed to protect their identity.

In late 2021, I started working for an international tutoring agency in Moscow.

The agency counted some of Russia's elite among its clientele — so I was quickly thrust into a world of private jets, guarded estates, and personal chauffeurs.

I worked in Moscow until Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, when I was relocated to Monaco.

We charged $150 per hour minimum for classes, but more experienced tutors and specific packages for private-school assessments or English-language testing would cost more.

Tutoring does not require any kind of formal qualification, but parents were still often happy to part with their cash as long as the tutors had a native-English accent and some connection to either the British private school system or some of the UK's top universities.

$150 was also small change for many of these families, which was reflected in the various classroom settings — Monaco penthouses, Moscow mansions, and yachts.

The money the Russian elite were willing to throw at young, inexperienced tutors was unbelievable — and frankly quite frightening.

I had acquaintances who worked as governors or nannies who were earning well into six figures.

Others were offered similarly extortionate salaries to spend their summers teaching on yachts in places like St. Barts in the Caribbean or sailing around the world.

I taught in luxurious villas and penthouse apartments

Often the children we taught, who were from four to around 18 years old, had private drivers who hurried them about in tinted Range Rovers or Mercedes-Benz cars.

In Moscow, many of our classes took place in Rublevka, an elite guarded estate in the west of the capital, where Russian President Vladimir Putin owns a home.

Many of the kids we taught lived in a world entirely different from any we had known.

A colleague of mine did after-school classes there with an eight-year-old boy called Ivan.

One week his family had been planning a weekend trip to get away from the capital: "I hope the weather isn't too bad so we can take the helicopter and don't have to drive," he said.

We also homeschooled two pupils: Alexei, 13, and his younger sister, Elena, 11.

The first time I met Alexei, he walked into our office sporting $1,000 Balenciaga trainers and a watch worth at least five times as much.

He was nevertheless a pleasant child but, like Ivan, appeared somewhat disconnected from reality.

In one class, he was shocked to hear that we didn't receive regular pampering from staff at home: "It's been seven months since you had a massage? I have a massage every day, I have my own massage therapist," he told us.

Elena was less communicative and didn't seem to enjoy the lavish lifestyle she had.

"What have I done to deserve this? I hate my life," she would often say.

My colleagues and I became increasingly concerned about her well-being as time went on.

She didn't enjoy classes alone and wanted to be with friends in a normal school.

But her parents insisted.

She seem tied to the life into which she had been born.

The job constantly surprised me

I met two types of parents in the job: Those who spent thousands of dollars on their children because they cared about them, and those who spent the money so that they didn't have to think about them.

I felt that many of the parents fell into the latter category.

Related stories

Frequently, we had little, if any, contact with the parents, and we would usually deal with nannies or drivers instead.

It felt like many of the parents found you to be an eye-sore in their luxurious lives.

Once, I had to teach a lesson at a seaside villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, an exclusive area between Nice in the south of France and Monaco.

The home was on a private road, and I entered through a large automatic gate that was littered with security cameras.

The house was spread out over two floors, with a swimming pool, a fully-equipped gym, a sauna, and a steam room.

When I arrived, they told me that the kids, aged four and six, had not finished their personal training session and that I would have to wait outside in the street.

Eventually the nanny said she would find me somewhere to sit "out of sight," so I was hurried into a large store cupboard in the furthest corner of the house. The kids strolled in about an hour later.

Some tried to get their children out of Russia after the invasion began

When the war in Ukraine broke out, a number of families came to us looking to find school placements for their children either in the West or in the United Arab Emirates , where many wealthy Russians fled at the outbreak of the war.

There was one family with three young children who were looking to find schools in Dubai.

Speaking to us in perfect English on Zoom with a background that boasted enormous paintings and palatial pillars, they seemed polite, well-mannered, and bright.

We later discovered that the kids were the grandchildren of a senior Russian politician who had played a major role in starting the war in Ukraine.

The irony was not lost on us that some of those who had played a key part in helping Putin initiate his brutal, unprovoked invasion were now trying to help their children escape Russia.

The children often brought up politics and the war

The company we worked for had explicitly told us to avoid discussing politics with the pupils, as the government was cracking down on protestors, and it could have put us and our pupils in danger.

But the children often brought the topic up themselves, their comments ringing with the ideology they had likely absorbed at home.

"Ukraine is ours, after all," Alexei told me in one class just after the invasion began in February.

Ivan, referring to a picture of Putin, once said, "Oh, he's amazing! Don't you think he's amazing?"

"You should open an office in Kyiv. It's beautiful there," one parent also wryly said to me.

There were occasional breakthroughs

We taught many different pupils but only one really seemed to appreciate just how lucky they were.

Elizaveta, 15, frequently expressed her discontent with Putin's Russia.

"We're killing thousands of innocent Ukrainians. It's awful," she once said.

That week, she had been kicked out of school for dyeing her hair and had asked her parents to book some additional classes so that she didn't fall behind.

Her parents were looking to send her to an English private school that September.

"The best thing I can do now is leave Russia," she told me. "That's the last option I have. Perhaps from abroad, I might be able to do some good."

Elizaveta was an anomaly, and most of the time, you had to settle for smaller victories.

I distinctly remember telling our homeschooled pupils that my colleagues and I had decided to leave Russia .

Elena seemed like she could not have cared less.

But Alexei looked genuinely upset.

It was as though the prism through which he saw the world had been, if not broken, then at the very least a little scratched.
