The Best Pintail Longboards

The Best Pintail Longboards

Published by The Longboard Store | Jake Daniels on 28th Jan 2022

A pintail longboard is defined by having a pointed nose and tail. This type of longboard is directional, meaning it’s only meant to go in one direction: forward. Typically designed with  top mount trucks, this deck style offers great stability, making it great for cruising and carving. The pintail design is a very traditional skateboard design, meaning there are tons of options if you’re looking to find one.

When it comes to finding the best pintail longboard, after considering length and quality, all you need to worry about is finding a graphic you love. If you’re looking for a standard size longboard, you’ll want something between 33”-38”. If you want your longboard to last a long time, quality is extremely important. While you can find cheap boards online, they tend to wear out very quickly. Luckily, if you shop with us, you don’t need to worry about this because we only offer the newest and highest quality longboards. Here are some great starters:

Madrid Blunt 36” Scarab

Madrid Blunt 36” Desert

What is a pintail longboard?

What are pintail longboards good for, are pintail longboards good for downhill, how do you stop on a pintail longboard, what is the difference between a pintail and a drop-through longboard, can you use a pintail for longboard dancing.

A pintail is a traditional style of longboard that takes a lot of cues from malibu surfboards of the past. They commonly vary from 37" up to 44", although they can go right up to 60"!

Short pintails don't have a lot of space on them due to the narrow nose and tail, so don't be put off by a longer board.

Back to the boards

Pintails are timeless, surfy shaped longboards that are great for all kinds of cruising. Whilst perhaps not as functional as drop-throughs and drop-downs, they have that classic look that is synonymous with sidewalk surfing. Pintails are great for cruising around the streets in style!

Pintail longboards are "top-mounted," in other words the trucks are mounted on the underside of the deck like a regular skateboard. As long as a pintail has a quality pair of trucks, it'll give a mellow, cruisy turn that feels much nicer than a drop through.

Pintails also have more deck space than a drop-through, which makes them a bit easier to stand on for total beginners.

The downside of a pintail is that it's higher than a drop-through - so less stable, and harder to push, brake and slide.

You can see our range of pintail longboards here.

Most pintails are built to cruise - which means they are flexy. Flex is not what you want for downhill at all - it reduces rider input and contributes to speed wobble. The pintail deck shape is really not ideal for downhill either. If you want to carve up a hill snowboard or surf style, then pintails are great. Just don't get too fast!

You can stop on a pintail the same way you can stop on any longboard - footbrake, slide or carve your speed off. All of these things are easier to learn on a  drop-through longboard  first though - so if you plan on hitting the hills, we'd recommend a drop-through over a pintail.

You can learn more about pintails and see our recommendations on our  longboard for beginners page!

In terms of how they skate, pintails offer a "surfier" feeling turn, a more classic aesthetic, a mellower carve, and more footspace. Drop-through longboards are more stable, and easier to learn footbraking, sliding and pushing on. In reality, both pintails and drop-throughs are fine for beginners, and both are light-years nicer to cruise around on than a regular skateboard. If you like the look of a pintail, go for it. If you are thinking of getting into downhill, maybe a drop-through is a better option for a total beginner.

The longerger wheelbase of a pintail does make it possible to learn a few dance moves. A longer pintail is a good option for the "occasional" or "casual" dancer. That said, a proper longboard dancer setup is a lot more functional for that kind of skating than a pintail, and they're often in a similar size category. For cruising around, dancers are often just as good as pintails If you're a beginner longboarder and you're thinkng about getting into dancing eventually, you might as well just go straight in for a dancer setup and be done with it.

[Here are the best longboards for heavier riders .]

What makes a pintail longboard different?

Pintails are characterized by their pointed nose and tail, which gives them their distinctive shape. This shape makes them extremely stable at high speeds, making them ideal for downhill riding. However, their stability also makes them great for beginners who are just starting to learn how to longboard. The pintail's versatility makes it one of the most popular choices for both experienced and beginner riders alike.

If you're looking for a versatile longboard that can do it all, a pintail is the perfect choice for you. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced rider, a pintail will give you the stability and control you need to ride with confidence.

What is a pintail longboard good for?

Pintail longboards are often used for downhill racing and freeriding due to their stable, predictable ride. Pintails are also popular for cruising and carving thanks to their lean design and ability to navigate tight turns. Additionally, pintails tend to be more affordable than other longboard shapes, making them a great option for budget-conscious riders.

Is a pintail longboard good for beginners?

Pintail longboards are often lauded as being great for beginners. This is because they offer a very stable and predictable ride. Their simple design also makes them easy to maneuver and control. Additionally, pintail longboards tend to be very versatile and can be used for a variety of different riding styles.

However, it's important to note that not all pintail longboards are created equal. Some models may be better suited for beginner riders than others. When choosing a pintail longboard, be sure to consider your skill level and desired riding style. This will help you find the perfect board for your needs.

Which is better pintail or cruiser?

The answer to this question depends on a few factors, such as what kind of riding you want to do, and what kind of feel you're looking for in a board. In general, cruisers are better for beginners because they're more stable and easier to control. Pintails are better for experienced riders who want a more agile board that's easier to maneuver. Ultimately, the best board for you is the one that feels best to you and allows you to ride the way you want to.

How do you ride a pintail longboard?

When you are ready to ride your pintail longboard, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, be sure to push off with your back foot while keeping your front foot close to the nose of the board. This will help you maintain balance and control as you cruise down the street.

Next, be mindful of your weight distribution. You want to keep your weight centered on the board so that it is evenly balanced. This will help you avoid speed wobbles and other issues that can occur when one side of the board is heavier than the other. Finally, always keep your eyes up and scan the road ahead of you for potential obstacles.

What are the advantages of a pintail longboard?

Pintail longboards have several advantages over other types of longboards. First, they are more stable and easier to control at high speeds. This makes them ideal for downhill racing or cruising around town. Second, they are more maneuverable than other types of longboards, making them great for doing tricks and carving.

Finally, pintail longboards tend to be lighter and easier to carry than other types of longboards, making them a good choice for traveling or commuting.

[Need a pintail longboard ? ]

What is the difference between pintail and cruiser?

There are a few key differences between pintail and cruiser skateboards. Firstly, pintail boards tend to be narrower and more maneuverable than cruisers. This makes them ideal for tricks and skating in tight spaces. Secondly, cruisers usually have bigger wheels than pintails, which makes them faster and better suited for longer rides.

Finally, cruisers often have more durable construction than pintails, making them a better choice for rough terrain or street skating.

Can you ollie on a pintail longboard?

It is possible to ollie on a pintail longboard, but it takes practice and patience. The best way to learn is by finding a small hill or ramp to practice on. Start by rolling down the hill or ramp and then popping the tail of the board off the ground.

As you get more comfortable, you can start adding tricks like 180s or 360s. Pintail longboards are great for cruising around town or carving up hills, but they can also be used for doing tricks. With a little practice, you can learn to ollie on a pintail longboard and impress your friends with your skills.

[Check out some rad BMX tricks . ]

How do you stop on a pintail longboard?

To stop on a pintail longboard, you need to use your footbrake. To do this, simply step on the back of your board with your back foot, and apply pressure. This will cause your rear wheels to lock up and skid, allowing you to stop. Remember to always keep your footbrakes in good working order, as they are your only way of stopping on a pintail longboard.

Does longboarding build muscle?

While longboarding does not specifically build muscle, it can help to tone and maintain muscle mass. This is because longboarding requires the use of muscles throughout the body to keep balanced and control the board. In addition, longboarding can also help improve coordination and agility, both of which are important for overall physical fitness.

Are pintail longboards good for downhill?

Pintail longboards are often associated with beginners, but that doesn't mean they can't be good for downhill riding. In fact, pintails can offer a number of advantages for those looking to get into the sport.

For one, pintails are generally more stable than other board shapes thanks to their wide trucks and large wheels. This makes them ideal for tackling fast, aggressive runs. Additionally, pintails tend to be more forgiving when it comes to mistakes, making them ideal for learning the ropes of downhill riding.

Of course, there are also some downsides to pintail longboards. They can be more difficult to control at high speeds, and they're not always the best choice for tight turns and technical courses. But for those just getting started in downhill riding, pintails can be a great option.

What kind of longboard should a beginner get?

There are a few things to consider when purchasing a longboard for beginners. The first is the size of the board. A larger board will be more stable and easier to ride, while a smaller board will be more maneuverable.

The second thing to consider is the shape of the deck. A deck with a concave shape will provide better grip and stability, while a flat or camber deck will be more flexible and easier to turn. Lastly, consider the trucks and wheels. Trucks with a lower center of gravity will be more stable, while those with a higher center of gravity will be more agile.

Wheels with a softer durometer will provide better grip and cushioning, while those with a harder durometer will be faster and smoother. With these things in mind, it is up to the individual to decide what kind of longboard is best for them. There is no wrong answer, as each person will have different preferences. The important thing is to get out there and ride!

With so many different kinds of longboards on the market, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you. If you're a beginner, it's important to choose a board that is stable and easy to ride.

A larger board with a concave deck will provide better grip and stability, while a smaller board with a camber deck will be more maneuverable.

The important thing is to get out there and ride.

Is longboarding safer than skateboarding?

There are a few key factors that make longboarding a safer activity than skateboarding. First, longboards are generally much longer than traditional skateboards, which provides more stability and balance. Additionally, longboards typically have softer wheels, which makes for a smoother ride and helps to prevent any sudden jolts or shocks. Finally, many longboards come equipped with safety features such as hand brakes and leashes, which can help to keep riders safe in the event of a fall.

While longboarding does have its advantages in terms of safety, it is important to remember that any time you are riding a board on pavement, there is always the potential for injury. Be sure to wear proper safety gear, such as a helmet and elbow and knee pads, and ride with caution to help avoid any accidents.

[What do you know about freestyle skiing ?]

Why do longboards have the trucks backwards?

One of the most distinctive features of a longboard is that the trucks are mounted in reverse. This is not just for aesthetics - it actually serves a purpose. By mounting the trucks backwards, the longboard has increased stability and easier turning.

The reason for this is that the center of gravity is shifted forward on a longboard. This makes it more difficult to turn and makes the board less stable at high speeds. By mounting the trucks backwards, the weight is shifted back and this gives the board more stability. It also makes it easier to turn, as you are effectively pushing against the direction of travel.

Are bigger wheels better for longboarding?

Are bigger wheels better for longboarding? The debate has been raging on for years, with no clear winner in sight. Some riders prefer the stability and smoother ride of larger wheels, while others find that smaller wheels provide more maneuverability and speed. So, which is the right choice for you?

It really depends on your riding style and what you hope to get out of your longboarding experience. If you're mostly interested in cruising around town or hitting the occasional sidewalk, then larger wheels are probably a good option. They'll help you maintain a comfortable speed and keep you feeling stable on your board.

But if you're looking to shred some serious hills or do some trick riding, then smaller wheels might be the way to go. They'll help you pick up speed more quickly and make it easier to perform tricks.

Ultimately, the decision of which size wheel to use is up to you. Experiment with both and see what feels best for your riding style. There's no wrong answer here - it's all about what works best for you.

Should longboard trucks be loose or tight?

There are many factors to consider when determining whether longboard trucks should be loose or tight. One important factor is the type of terrain you'll be riding on. If you'll be doing mostly downhill racing, for example, you'll want to have your trucks tighter so you can make sharper turns. Conversely, if you're just cruising around town, you might want your trucks a little looser so you have a smoother ride.

Another factor to consider is your own personal preference. Some people like their trucks tighter for more control, while others prefer a looser truck for a more relaxed ride. Ultimately, it's up to you to experiment and see what feels best for you.

Whatever your decision, just remember that it's important to keep your trucks well-maintained. This means regularly cleaning and lubricating them, and making sure the kingpins are tight. With proper care, your longboard trucks will last for many years.

Other factors to consider

If you need a pintail longboard, there are a ton of other elements to consider - far beyond what we can cover in this article. So here are a list of other terms you may want to research, to get an even better understanding of this topic.

Kicktail Longboard: How To Choose The Right One

Sharing is caring!

Many longboards and cruisers nowadays have a kicktail. So what does the term “kicktail longboard” mean?

Kicktail longboards often refer to pintail-style boards with the pin-shaped tail replaced with a true kicktail! These boards have the advantages of a pintail but without the main drawback – the lack of proper kick for kick turns and curb hops.

In this post, I’ll discuss these “augmented” pintails, then I’ll go over the different styles of longboards and the type of kicks typically found on them.

Table of Contents

Kicktail longboards: pintails on steroids

The term kicktail longboard is often use for a pintail WITHOUT a “pin” tail but with a kicktail instead. Here’s what a true pintail looks like:

arbor fish bamboo pintail

And here’s a kicktail longboard:

arbor mission photo kicktail longboard

As you can see from the above, these two longboards have a very similar shape except for the tail. The outline has a narrow aspect, widest around 1/3 from the nose and tapering down toward the tail.

The pintail board has a flat and really narrow, pointed tail, while the kicktail board has a wider (diamond shaped here) angled kick:

Likewise, Landyachtz has both pintail and kicktail longboards in its lineup, for example:

pintail longboard landyachtz

Besides augmented pintail types, other shapes with kicks are also often included in the kicktail longboard category e.g. the 42.2″ Landyachtz Big Dipper :

Landyachtz big dipper kicktail longboard

This longboard has a different outline compared to pintails, and the kicktail is relatively flat albeit functional.

Features of kicktail longboards

Like pintails, kicktail lonboards generally have a long wheelbase , resulting in a smooth and stable ride. Their narrow width and aspect ratio makes for a playful, surfy ride with lots of flow, and also provide good control over the rails for more aggressive riding.

These boards are designed primarily for lower speed carving and allow you to lean deep into your carves. Like pintails, their topmount design and flowy RKP trucks give you a tight turning, agile and responsive ride.

The kicktail makes these longboards more versatile than pintail e.g. for urban commuting and sidewalk hopping. The kick also allows you to do quick turns despite the longer wheelbase.

Kicktail longboards generally have a mellow concave and subtle rocker for subtle but helpful foot lock-in when riding.

Kicktail longboards are also sometimes referred to as single kick carvers.

Types of longboard with kicktails

So-called “kicktail longboards” are just one type of longboards with kicktails. Many other types of longboards also have one or more kicks. Let’s break down the types longboards based on their kick:

Mini-cruisers

Mini-cruisers are typically single-kick, surf-shaped boards with deck length under 30″ e.g. the Loaded Ballona .

Loaded Ballona single-kick mini-cruiser

Mini cruisers generally have a short but wide kick, with a decent angle to provide good leverage for ollies and obstacle hopping when doing urban riding.

Cruisers are also surfboard-shapes with lengths typically in the 30″ to 34″ range, with a functional kicktail. Cruisers often feature a significant kick for easy and nimble city navigation and fun trickery.

Some cruisers also have a small nose kick, adding to the board’s versatility, playfulness, “slashiness”, and ability to do kick and flip tricks.

Landyachtz ATV Classic hybrid 32

There are also single-kick cruisers (no nose), sometimes with a wider or deeper tail kick.

Landyachtz ATV Classic hybrid 32

Hybrid longboards

So-called hybrid longboards are a mix of traditional street skateboard and longboard features, namely the ability to run larger longboard trucks and wheels. These longboards generally come with double kicks to allow street-like tricks and skatepark riding.

Good examples include the Landyachtz ATV (32″) and the Arbor Axel Serrat Pro (34″ or 39″).

Symmetrical cutouts

Symmetrical cutout longboards most often (nut not always ) have a drop-through design and are generally designed for easy cruising, distance pushing, and fast freeride. Some models, however, are also designed with freestyle in mind and come with small double kicks at the tips:

Loaded Dervish Sama double kicks

Directional cutouts

Directional (asymmetrical) cutout longboards also most often have a drop-through design. These boards are primarily meant for efficient carving and easy commuting. Some have a kicktail to facilitate quick turns when navigating the streets or carving down moderate hills.

The Sector 9 Striker is a great example of a directional carving longboard with a kicktail:

Sector 9 Striker directional cutout with kicktail

Dancing & freestyle longboards

Dancer/freestyle longboards are generally very large topmount platforms with large symmetrical kicktail and nose kick:

pintail longboard landyachtz

The large double kicks are relatively mellow angled to allow more room for board walking and cross-stepping, essentially increasing the size of the foot platform.

On the other hand, the kicks need to have a decent length and width to allow for kick and flip freestyle tricks often mixed-in for modern longboard dancing.

Read more about dancing longboards here .

Longboards without kicks

While most longboards have at least one kick, some have no kicks as their primary focus is either on mellow cruising or carving, or on high-speed downhill and racing.

These include:

  • Pure pintails (see earlier): pintail list
  • Some drop-through longboards: drop-through list
  • Most drop-down (drop deck) longboards: drop down list
  • Dedicated bullet-shaped downhill longboards: downhill board list
  • Dedicated pumping setups: examples

For example, in contrast to Loaded’s Basalt Tesseract, a freeride longboard with large double kicks for freeride and sliding, the Truncated Tesseract is a pure downhill board with no kicks at all.

A longboard’s design in terms of kicks depends on its target riding styles and capabilities. Case in point, the Loaded Tesseract ( review ) comes in 3 versions that vary in size and number of kicks:

pintail longboard landyachtz

  • The 39″ Basalt Tesseract is a dual-kick longboard for riding hills but also has freestyle and dancing abilities
  • The 36″ single-kick Cantellated Tesseract is primarily designed for high speed but the wide kick allows for serious technical slides and kick tricks
  • The 33″ kick-less Truncated Tesseract is a lightweight, compact, race-inspired board designed for riding big mountain road and cornering at very high speed.

Final thoughts

Kicktails are extremely useful for added control, quicker turns, curb and obstacle hopping, and freestyle tricks. Nose kicks also add to a boards versatility and trickability, and can help for a more secure foot lock-in. Kicktail longboards often refer to pintail shapes with an added kick.

The number, size, and angle of kicks vary a lot among types of longboards, depending on the board’s riding goals. Some longboards come with no kicks so as to emphasize other features e.g. drop-through design, flat foot platform, or high-speed racing capabilities.

Best Virgin Moscow Mule Recipe

Nov 30, 2019

Wherever there are great cocktail recipes, there are equally fabulous mocktail recipes for those of us who enjoy all the style and taste of cocktails without liquor. In this post, we reveal the best recipe for the Virgin Moscow Mule on the internet! Let's get started!

Introduction

A cocktail is essentially a blend of two or more ingredients of which at least one is alcoholic. As of late, cocktails are getting more inventive with upwards of four and five ingredients.

The Moscow Mule keeps it classically simple with only three ingredients that most of us already have at home. Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.

The intense burn of the ginger beer blended with the refreshing sourness of lime juice delights the palate and warms you right up from the first sip.

There are a multitude of practical reasons for choosing a mocktail over a cocktail.

This could include health concerns and diet practices. Or, maybe you're the designated driver and don't want to miss out on a fun night with your social group.

Whatever the reason, mocktails make sure no one is left out.

Most will say that a mocktail is simply a recipe for any cocktail sans the alcoholic ingredient(s), but we're going to show you fantastic ways to enjoy a Virgin Moscow Mule without sacrificing flavor or taste.

Ingredients:

  • Sparkling Water
  • Fresh limes
  • Ginger beer
  • Simple syrup

Instructions:

  • You can either muddle a couple of fresh limes or use freshly squeezed lime juice. We won't tell if you decide to do both ;)
  • Next, combine your favorite sparkling water and a splash of ginger beer
  • Add a serving of simple syrup (1 part water, 1 part sugar)
  • Stir. If you have a shaker on hand, you can also shake the combined ingredients together, but be cautious when pouring as the turbulence may have created a little extra fizz from the sparkling water.
  • Pour over ice

With this excellent non-alcoholic version of the Moscow Mule, you can have guilt-free seconds or even thirds!

Moscow Muled copper mugs filled with clear liquid ice cubs and lime slices

Health Benefits

Typically, in every 6 oz serving of the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail there are approximately 180 to 200 calories.

One fantastic upside of making a Moscow Mule mocktail is that with the extraction of vodka (say 1.5 oz) you can eliminate around 96 calories, meaning that a typical 6 oz serving is approximately 100 calories or less!

Layers of Flavors

one whole ginger beside four sliced ginger

Now that we've laid the foundations, it's time to explore the variations and wonderful layers we can add to perfect our Virgin Moscow Mule.  With these alterations, your mocktails are sure to be enjoyed by all!

In addition to following the preparation of the basic recipe noted above, we suggest adding a few slices of fresh ginger to the mix.

To fully extract the flavors of the ginger, consider muddling it with your limes. Be careful to strain afterward, unless you want to be sucking up bits of ginger through your straw and set your mouth ablaze!

Coupled with the ginger beer, this is sure to amplify the smoldering tones of the original cocktail's taste.

Be sure to use ginger beer and not ginger ale. Most commercially sold ginger beer, though fermented, is alcohol-free. It differs from ginger ale in the way it is manufactured. The intensity of ginger essence in ginger ale isn’t comparable to that of the essence in ginger beer.

So, if you decide to replace ginger beer with ginger ale, you’ll be disappointed at the silenced flavors of ginger in your drink. Essentially, what you’d be drinking wouldn’t be a Moscow Mule at all.

Take it from us, use ginger beer!

If you would rather direct your variations or additions towards the sweet and fruity citrus flavors of your Virgin Mule, you can switch out the simple syrup for a fruit-flavored syrup.

Use a lime-flavored syrup if you would like to stay true to the original characteristics of the classic Moscow Mule.

If you're looking to put a spin on your virgin mule, don't be afraid to try any berry-flavored syrup for an extra layer of fruity goodness.

Sugar-Free Options

Not everyone is a fan of sugar and all things sweet. With this modification, the recipe can accommodate those of us who are patrolling our sugar intake due to dieting and/or health concerns.

More specifically, if you're counting calories or looking to steer clear of sugar all together, you can modify the Virgin Mule recipe by using sugar-free syrup.

With 8 grams of sugar in one tablespoon of conventional syrup, the sugar-free option is a great way to go. A couple of dollops of the sugar-free syrup is a guilt-free way to enjoy the sweetness of this mocktail without the guilt.

Depending on your location and accessibility, you may or may not find brands of sugar-free syrup.  All the merrier if you can!

If you can’t find sugar-free syrup, another option is to use flavored sparkling water to add some additional flavour to your mocktail.  Some brands of flavored sparkling water are sold in tasty flavors with no sugar, no sweeteners, and no calories. Furthermore, the carbonation in sparkling water will augment the invigorating fizz of the ginger beer.  Win-win-win!

Serving Time

Just because we've decided to forego the alcohol component doesn't mean we're also forsaking presentation. We 're all about balance in life as well as in mocktails. So, if one component of the drink has been removed, another must be added!

And what better place to embellish then in the presentation?

It's no secret that the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug . There are a variety of reasons why, and one of them is that copper is trusted to maintain a cooler temperature. In addition, the copper adds a "zing" to the flavor of the cocktail with each sip.

Whatever the reason, we can't deny that a Moscow Mule served in a copper mug just looks and feels right. The same is to be said for a Virgin Mule.

Besides, if we’re talking about looks, no one has to know you’re drinking a mocktail if you don’t want them to. The copper mug will keep your secret!

In lieu of serving your Virgin Mule in a copper mug, you can serve it in any bar glass. With so many types and shapes of cocktail glasses, there really is no reason why you couldn't enjoy your mocktail in a highball, an old fashion glass, or even a martini glass.

Whatever you have on hand should work just fine!

Garnish Like a Pro

Add a lime wedge to the rim and voila!

Want to take things up a notch? Drag the lime wedge along the rim of your glass, allowing the citrus to coat the edge. Turn your glass upside down into a plate of salt or sugar.

Extra points for presentation and added flavor with every sip!

For herb garnishes, clap your choice of herbs between your hands to bruise it lightly and release its essential oils and aroma.  Mint works great!

And here's an extra tip. If you have them, sprinkle a few pomegranate seeds on the surface of your drink! However, be careful if drinking with a straw as those little seeds will get sucked right up! It’s also a beautiful addition to your Virgin Mule, as you can see in the photo below.

Moscow Muled copper mug filled with liquid cranberries and sliced lime

We hope this article has been useful in helping to introduce you to the Virgin Moscow Mule! The Moscow Mule is an incredibly versatile drink, so don't hesitate to let your creativity push you to experiment with new variations. And, if you want to take your presentation and style up a notch, make sure to equip your kitchen bar with a few copper mugs !
