The view and the experience were outstanding. The restaurant is nestled down a quiet residential road, and overlooks Lake Champlain. There are a few tables right on the water, and small fire pits as well. The service was top notch, and the food and drink selection was lovely. Highly recommend.

Gorgeous view and beautiful seating indoor and out. Kind of like a secret location that is truly beautiful and amazing for pictures. Waiters were amazing and friendly and willing to make the experience well. The food is good but could've been better for the price. I was told they only have one chef. Overall good experience and good drinks too!

Brand new spot on the shore of Lake Champlain in Westport Ny. Absolutely can't beat the view. Good service throughout our drink service then dinner. Derek was amazingly attentive and personable, tons of smiles throughout. Features lots of local produce and meat, a boon to the area. Had the scallops, well prepared and seasoned. Leon, the burger of course. Both of us enjoyed the food and ambiance. Had a good time chatting with other summer locals (like us) during the rain storm. Hope this place endures. A place for inventive cocktails and a good wine list is desperately needed in this sleepy shore town. The Champlain valley has much to offer, come eat here and see for yourself.

Delicious food and great service, and they've always managed to squeeze us in even when we forgot to make reservations. One slight quibble is that they could shake up the veggie platter and do different veggie offerings. That said, everything I have ordered here has been excellent -- try the warm olives -- and the crisped brussels sprouts even better than that.

Hard to find but worth it. Gorgeous setting right on the lake with lots of outdoor seating. Food was very good. Tuna tartare was great. Gazpacho soup had that fresh taste of Summer.

Delicious dining right on Lake Champlain. Loved their leek soup, crab cake, and desserts.

I am a nyc foodie/curmudgeon/hard to please annoying food whiner... I had a wonderful meal including maybe the best scallops I've ever had, along with everything else perfect, especially the view. Why you would not want to dine here is an unsolvable mystery....

Our first time. Beautiful views of Lake Champlain compliment your dinner. We tried the Thurs oyster/drink happy hour and were not disappointed Realized how much I missed fresh oysters Service was friendly and fast Post happy hour we managed to share a tuna sashimi app... as well as the burata. Both tasty as was the lobster spaghetti entre. Friendly crowd helped the dinner atmosphere even further. We’ll be back More

While enjoying the scenic lakeside view from our table we had a quality dining experience ordering from a small but varied menu. Our server Annette took very good care of us and with the coordination of the kitchen delivered hot, tasty meals in a timely... fashion so we could make what turned out to be an outstanding show "What the Constitution Means to Me" at the Depot Theatre in a timely fashion. The only negative was it took two requests to get the management to turn down the very loud music . More

On our second visit to this restaurant this season we experienced what we felt was a kitchen that was not able to handle the Friday night crowd. My wife had lobster risotto which she enjoyed on our earlier visit but this time it had very... little lobster in it. I ordered rigatoni bolognese as I did on our first visit but it arrived at the table barely warm this time. After its return from the kitchen a second time it was hot and delicious. More

People travel to Lake Como, Italy for views like this. And the food was excellent. A green salad with fruit, dressed perfectly with a maple balsamic. My pork chop with peaches, sweet potatoes and greens was wonderful and my friends bolognese was heavenly. I can’t... say enough about the food and the staff. This restaurant was recommended. We were seated next to a group of noisy crying children though out dinner. Father sat there yelling child's name and did nothing. I alerted Restaurant staff who did not help. Children were running around the patio in spite of social... distancing rules. We ate quickly and left. Food was good but terrible experience More

Fantastic spot for dinner right on the water. Wonderful salads, solid entrees and absolutely fantastic desserts. Always a vegetarian friendly entree on the menu, but great steaks and seafood as well. The bolognese is our favorite! Highly recommend!

I recently accompanied family members for lunch at the Westport Yacht Club that is situated on the banks of Lake Champlain. It was a gorgeous day and a light breeze was blowing in off of the lake. We were warmly welcomed by the staff who... offered us a table on the covered deck outdoors. Tables were topped with white fabric tablecloths and a piece of brown wrapping paper on top of that. The decor was nautical and informal. There was strung lighting for dinner dining, adding to the overall relaxed atmosphere. The lunch menu was somewhat limited, having a list of cocktails on one side and approximately 10-11 entrees on the other. All entrees were enticing, most having a Mediterranean influence. I lived in Italy for forty years and I normally avoid ordering Italian food stateside, as it often doesn't live up to my expectations. I ventured out at the Westport Yacht Club and ordered Spaghetti with Wild Mushrooms. I asked that the pasta be cooked al-dente and the chef happily obliged. The spaghetti was scrumptious! Served in a light, creamy sauce topped with a little pesto and Romano cheese. One of the best plates of pasta I've had in the USA. Other family members enjoyed steamed mussels serviced with toasted bread for dunking and a hamburger. We passed on dessert as there were only two items available, both chocolate-based. Service was friendly, attentive and happy to engage in conversation. I would love to return for dinner sometime, however, the Westport Yacht Club will be closing for the season on September 2nd. During the normal season, they are open for lunch on the weekends and dinner nightly. Prices were very reasonable. I highly recommend the Westport Yacht Club to the TripAdvisor community. More

Food was very, very, good. Tuna Tartare as good as I have ever eaten. Highly recomended. Prok chop, perfectly coooked. Scallops, for this far inland, were a wonderful surprise. Don't heistate. Even though we've lived in the area for years, we hadn't been to the Westport Yacht Club before. We certainly have been missing out! We had a fantastic experience, our table had beautiful lakeside views, and we all sat facing the water. Drinks were quite... tasty, we tried their take on an "old fashioned", which added a delightful new spin on the classic drink adding a dash of maple syrup that was not overpowering at all, but a delicious concoction on a cool summer evening. Our appetizers were excellent, particularly the tuna tartar. The grilled scallops over risotto is a must try if you like seafood. Overall, well worth the trip if you haven't visited before. We will definitely return and wish we had dined there sooner! More

We have been to the Yacht Club numerous times this summer and have enjoyed every visit. The food is delicious and the service is great. We are fortunate that the restaurant is a short walk from our house but we would drive if needed...it is... that good. Definitely the best restaurant on New York’s Champlain coast. More

About Le Bistro du Lac

Formerly located in our fair hamlet at the Essex Shipyard ‘s Rudder Club , Le Bistro du Lac today operates seasonally at the Westport Yacht Club property in Westport, NY. Owned and operated by Bernard and Rosemary Perillat, Le Bistro du Lac offers a waterside french fine dining experience with breathtaking views and best-in-the-region service. Open each summer between mid-June and mid-September, Le Bistro du Lac is the perfect choice for a lingering romantic dinner or a delicious pre-theater meal.

About Chef Bernard Perillat

Le Bistro du Lac Chef/Owner, Bernard Perillat has operated Le Bistro since 1991. He brings Classic French Cuisine to the Wesport waterfront every summer. In the winter, you’ll find him at Chez Henri at Sugarbush Resort in Warren, Vermont. Bernard was born in the French Alps in the Northern part of France. At a young age he became interested in restaurants, food and cooking. He moved to Montreal in the 1960’s where he met Henri Borel. In 1970, Bernard moved to Vermont to join Henri as a partner at Chez Henri restaurant, at Sugarbush. Henri had opened Chez Henri in 1964. In 1991 Bernard had an opportunity to branch out during the summer months. He started a small restaurant called Le Bistro du Lac (The Bistro on the Lake) on Lake Champlain in Essex, New York. After six exciting years in Essex, Bernard was offered a chance to move a little south on the lake to Westport, New York. Enjoying his customers, food, and wonderful views of Lake Champlain, and the surrounding mountain ranges, he moved the next year to the Westport Yacht Club on the waterfront in Westport, NY. In 2011, Bernard celebrated his 20th year on Lake Champlain. I mentioned above that Le Bistro du Lac welcomes diners by air, land, and sea. I wasn’t waxing daydreamy. There’s a solid concrete pier for boats to moor and a sizable sand beach where seaplanes can come ashore. Questions abound after Westport, Conn., rowing club boats capsize in frigid waters of Long Island Sound

WESTPORT, Conn. -- There is much relief but also many questions following a frightening incident on the Long Island Sound .

More than 20 young people suffered mild to moderate hypothermia, after their rowing sculls capsized during bad weather on Wednesday night .

Damage was clearly visible on two of the rowing sculls. Each was carrying nine teenage boys and the third scull is somewhere in the Sound.

Everyone made it back to shore on Wednesday night after a frantic 911 call brought dozens of first responders to Compo Beach in Westport .

"Mayday! Mayday! We are on Long Island Sound, near Cockenoe Island, off of Compo. We need help!" a person said on the call.

In body camera video, a police officer can be heard counting the teenagers as they make it onto shore as they run across the beach to warm up.

"It was a very unique situation and certainly could have been a tragic mass casualty incident," said Westport Fire Department Deputy Chief Nick Marsan.

It started at the private Saugatuck Rowing Club, where 27 teens on three sculls were followed out onto the water by two adults on a so-called "crash boat."

They headed right into the rough weather, which the CBS New York Weather Team forecasted on Wednesday afternoon.

Two dozen people ended up in the 44-degree water. One young man, who was wrapped up after being rescued, was unable to walk due to hypothermia and had to be carried.

Finn Nestor was among the rowers stuck in the water for at least 40 minutes.

"Our fingers and toes were completely numb, it was pretty scary," he said.

Nestor says conditions were clear when they launched.

"In minutes, these huge swells and winds started appearing, and they were, like, coming over the bow of the boat and just slowly filling up the boat with water," he said.

The Saugatuck Rowing Club, which has a good reputation, says it practices "thorough planning and adherence to safety protocols."

However, many wonder why rowers went onto the water, given the forecast.

"They were varsity rowers who have experience, but some of those questions are going to have to be answered as to why they were out there," Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods said.

There is relief that everyone who went into the cold water was recovered.

Nestor says the team met Thursday to talk it all out, and he believes it's teamwork that ultimately got them through.

"My coach was very composed. He kept us through it, he kept reassuring us we'd make it home," he said.

The Saugatuck Rowing Club said it will review safety procedures, with an eye on strengthening them. We're told a counselor will be there Friday to offer the students support.

The crash boat the two coaches were on also sank. A planned recovery effort on Thursday afternoon was called off, due to high winds and difficult conditions.

I am a nyc foodie/curmudgeon/hard to please annoying food whiner... I had a wonderful meal including maybe the best scallops I've ever had, along with everything else perfect, especially the view. Why you would not want to dine here is an unsolvable mystery....

Our first time. Beautiful views of Lake Champlain compliment your dinner. We tried the Thurs oyster/drink happy hour and were not disappointed Realized how much I missed fresh oysters Service was friendly and fast Post happy hour we managed to share a tuna sashimi app... as well as the burata. Both tasty as was the lobster spaghetti entre. Friendly crowd helped the dinner atmosphere even further. We’ll be back More

While enjoying the scenic lakeside view from our table we had a quality dining experience ordering from a small but varied menu. Our server Annette took very good care of us and with the coordination of the kitchen delivered hot, tasty meals in a timely... fashion so we could make what turned out to be an outstanding show "What the Constitution Means to Me" at the Depot Theatre in a timely fashion. The only negative was it took two requests to get the management to turn down the very loud music . More

The view and the experience were outstanding. The restaurant is nestled down a quiet residential road, and overlooks Lake Champlain. There are a few tables right on the water, and small fire pits as well. The service was top notch, and the food and drink... selection was lovely. Highly recommend. More

On our second visit to this restaurant this season we experienced what we felt was a kitchen that was not able to handle the Friday night crowd. My wife had lobster risotto which she enjoyed on our earlier visit but this time it had very... little lobster in it. I ordered rigatoni bolognese as I did on our first visit but it arrived at the table barely warm this time. After its return from the kitchen a second time it was hot and delicious. More

People travel to Lake Como, Italy for views like this. And the food was excellent. A green salad with fruit, dressed perfectly with a maple balsamic. My pork chop with peaches, sweet potatoes and greens was wonderful and my friends bolognese was heavenly. I can’t... say enough about the food and the staff. Very beautiful setting and it was a perfect evening to dine outdoors. Oh, and don’t miss the watermelon cosmo! More

This restaurant was recommended. We were seated next to a group of noisy crying children though out dinner. Father sat there yelling child's name and did nothing. I alerted Restaurant staff who did not help. Children were running around the patio in spite of social... distancing rules. We ate quickly and left. Food was good but terrible experience More

Fantastic spot for dinner right on the water. Wonderful salads, solid entrees and absolutely fantastic desserts. Always a vegetarian friendly entree on the menu, but great steaks and seafood as well. The bolognese is our favorite! Highly recommend!

I recently accompanied family members for lunch at the Westport Yacht Club that is situated on the banks of Lake Champlain. It was a gorgeous day and a light breeze was blowing in off of the lake. We were warmly welcomed by the staff who... offered us a table on the covered deck outdoors. Tables were topped with white fabric tablecloths and a piece of brown wrapping paper on top of that. The decor was nautical and informal. There was strung lighting for dinner dining, adding to the overall relaxed atmosphere. The lunch menu was somewhat limited, having a list of cocktails on one side and approximately 10-11 entrees on the other. All entrees were enticing, most having a Mediterranean influence. I lived in Italy for forty years and I normally avoid ordering Italian food stateside, as it often doesn't live up to my expectations. I ventured out at the Westport Yacht Club and ordered Spaghetti with Wild Mushrooms. I asked that the pasta be cooked al-dente and the chef happily obliged. The spaghetti was scrumptious! Served in a light, creamy sauce topped with a little pesto and Romano cheese. One of the best plates of pasta I've had in the USA. Other family members enjoyed steamed mussels serviced with toasted bread for dunking and a hamburger. We passed on dessert as there were only two items available, both chocolate-based. Service was friendly, attentive and happy to engage in conversation. I would love to return for dinner sometime, however, the Westport Yacht Club will be closing for the season on September 2nd. During the normal season, they are open for lunch on the weekends and dinner nightly. Prices were very reasonable. I highly recommend the Westport Yacht Club to the TripAdvisor community. More

Food was very, very, good. Tuna Tartare as good as I have ever eaten. Highly recomended. Prok chop, perfectly coooked. Scallops, for this far inland, were a wonderful surprise. Don't heistate. Alfresco at its finest. Staff were warm and friendly, service a tad uneven or... 5 stars. We will be back. This is their first year and I expect the place to be off the charts next year. Chef is talented. Wine, by the glass was pricey. More

Even though we've lived in the area for years, we hadn't been to the Westport Yacht Club before. We certainly have been missing out! We had a fantastic experience, our table had beautiful lakeside views, and we all sat facing the water. Drinks were quite... tasty, we tried their take on an "old fashioned", which added a delightful new spin on the classic drink adding a dash of maple syrup that was not overpowering at all, but a delicious concoction on a cool summer evening. Our appetizers were excellent, particularly the tuna tartar. The grilled scallops over risotto is a must try if you like seafood. Overall, well worth the trip if you haven't visited before. We will definitely return and wish we had dined there sooner! More

We have been to the Yacht Club numerous times this summer and have enjoyed every visit. The food is delicious and the service is great. We are fortunate that the restaurant is a short walk from our house but we would drive if needed...it is... that good. Definitely the best restaurant on New York’s Champlain coast. More
