IRON BARK FOR SALE: Award-Winning Wylo II Gaff Cutter Available in W’Indies

' src=

Dec. 2/2019:  Accept no substitutes. This is the ultimate low-budget high-latitudes expedition yacht right here. Tried and tested! Believed to be the only boat anywhere to have spent unsupported winters frozen into ice in both the Arctic and Antarctic. A Wylo II cutter, 35 feet on deck, designed by Nick Skeates (who we have discussed before ), built in steel and launched by her current owner, Trevor Robertson, in 1997 in Queensland, Australia. Asking price is $45K US.

Trevor has cruised Iron Bark all over the world for the past 22 years, including extended sojourns in high latitudes, and has won the CCA Blue Water Medal and the RCC Seamanship Medal, among others.

Just a few of her intriguing features:

–Massively strong aluminum mast that does not require running backs to support her gaff mainsail

–Standing topmast so no need to hoist extra spars to fly the topsail

–Stainless steel standing rigging with mechanical terminals and lots of spare wire

–Keel-cooled 25hp Isuzu diesel engine with dry exhaust so no need to worry about overheating while running in ice, weed, or other crap

–Interchangeable diesel and solid-fuel heating stoves, complete with chainsaw to cut up wood for the latter

–Modern electrical system, LED lighting, and electronics

–Recent refit

I’ve never been on Iron Bark but I did visit with some friends aboard their self built steel Wilo 35 gaff cutter Granuaile. I was very impressed. He had done an amazing job building her. It had gobs of room, was well laid out, had a number of clever features, and just felt like a great boat. They had crossed the Atlantic four times and spent a year up a river in South America. A really neat couple and a terrific boat.

First of all we, my wife Dorothy and I, had to decide to what sort of use our next boat, already referred to as Wylo II, would be put. There seemed to be four basic requirements: a permanent home for two. ocean cruising from New Zealand to Europe at least. cruising the European Canals. sailing far up estuaries, rivers and creeks (a fascination).

What did you use as insulation on your boat? You mention spraying the insulation aren't you afraid of corrosion on the hull? Beautiful work, Wylo are one of my favourite boat. Great job.

Any idea how I can get in touch with Nick Skeats? I've sent a letter but I am still wating to hear back. I know he's out there somewhere and I would like to track him down. Any ideas? Thank you, I like your blog very much!

Production due to start on 35ft steel craft

steel

Shipwrights in Cowes, Isle of Wight have started building the first, of what they hope will be many, new 35ft steel yachts. Voyaging Yachts are building a demonstrator Wylo 35.5 for their first customer.

It is the first time Nick Skeates’ iconic Wylo 11 design has been brought to the market as a production yacht.

Steve Sleight, managing director, said: ‘We feel jubilant that, in the face of a really tough recession, we have created interest among both investors and customers and have moved into the production phase.’   Alas it’s not all good news for the British economy as the steel for the build was imported from Holland, profile-cut.   The Wylo 35.5 design is ideal for custom-built interiors, giving the buyer who wants to have a hand in the construction of their boat a choice for layout.   You can follow the build of the company’s demonstrator at www.voyagingyachts.com

Earlier this year the RNLI announced it would create 90 new jobs at its Dorset HQ

Island Swift

Island Swift  is a 35ft Gaff Cutter (Wylo II), designed and built in 1996 by Nick Skeates and John Richardson. She’s one of the few examples of a modern gaff rigged cruiser, designed to sail around the world. She is easy to manage, safe as well as beautiful and owned by JoJo and Simon Pickering of Penzance. The family have sailed across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, via Portugal, Spain, Maderia, Canaries and Cape Verde. JoJo comments, ‘she’s a low tec boat, we do not have a fridge, radar, chart plotter or shower and we love using our lead line, Walker’s log and sextant’

New boat: Wylo 35.5

wylo 11 yacht

Nick Skeates designed and built the original circumnavigating Wylo , a 32-foot centerboarder. He sold Wylo' s plans to 140 or so like-minded sailors until 2013 when Voyaging Yachts began building a slightly larger Wylo as a production boat. You can buy the boat in several stages of finish from a bare hull, to parts kits, to commissioned for bluewater.

No design feature of a bluewater boat is more comforting than a full, low-aspect keel, and the Wylo's is broad enough to rest on sand with the help of beaching legs. The hull's steel plates are laser cut for a nearly perfect fit in a series of gentle chines up to the long cabintrunk, which is flush with the topsides, that is, there are no side decks. There are 11 portholes cut into the cabintrunk and a hatch forward. The sprit adds 8 feet.

Aft of the cabintrunk is a truly unique design feature-the optional cockpit well. The original design omits a well in favor of an aft cabin below the cockpit, with the deck crew sitting on lockers and protected by a solid wraparound stern rail and boom gallows.

There are three available rigs: junk, Bermudian and topsail gaff cutter, the later being the most popular. The maststep is a tabernacle, which also serves as the attachment point for the gooseneck. That way, the boom stays attached when the mast is lowered.

Belowdecks, the Wylo's design precludes bulkheads, so any customized layout is possible. The standard interior, though, is a bit different from typical 35-footers, with a pilot berth across from the head and a split berth forward consisting of an adult-sized double across from a child's berth or workbench. The hull is insulated with foam.

The standard engine is a Beta 25-horsepower, keel cooled, diesel-electric hybrid. This system allows for efficient, long-distance motoring under battery, with the Beta running at optimum revolutions while charging the batteries.

The Wylo 35.5 may not use canting keels and carbon fiber, it's design and construction, in a quest for adventure, is every bit as thoughtful and considered as a racing circumnavigator's.

Solo sailor dodges hurricanes and ice on a North Atlantic crossing

Trevor Robertson and Iron Bark

I decided early in my life that the two things I most enjoyed were pottering about in small sailing boats and poking about the less travelled parts of the world. For the past 40 years that is what I have done whenever I had a boat and money for provisions.

I generally earned my cruising money working as a geologist on oil rigs in odd corners of the world on contracts that were too unpleasant or risky for most to accept.

My first ocean passage was in 1976. A young lady and I sailed westwards across the Indian Ocean from Western Australia in a wooden ex-racing boat. As was then the norm, navigation was with a plastic sextant and leadline, the vessel had an unreliable petrol engine, paraffin lamps and she leaked so there was seldom a dry bunk. The voyage ended in shipwreck in the Caribbean, the young lady having long since departed.

09 Iron Bark Greenland 2

I could not afford a vessel suitable for higher latitudes so I built one in Queensland. This was Iron Bark , a Wylo II class 35ft steel gaff cutter designed by Nick Skeates. She has proved to be nearly perfect for my purposes: capacious enough to carry a tonne of stores, comfortable, seaworthy with a short, stout rig that will take an immense amount of abuse and her steel hull can shunt ice.

Although I have done quite a few miles in the tropics in Iron Bark , I prefer less-frequented areas. Much of my sailing in the past 20 years has been in places like Antarctica, Greenland, Patagonia and Labrador. I have spent a winter alone in the ice of Antarctica, a winter frozen in north-west Greenland with a companion and another alone in the same area.

I believe Iron Bark is the only vessel to have wintered unsupported in both Antarctica and the Arctic; she is a fine little ship.

I have sailed about 195,000 miles so far, 118,000 of them in Iron Bark . In 2009, Annie Hill and I were jointly awarded the Blue Water Medal by the Cruising Club of America. My most recent voyage was from St John’s Newfoundland direct to Fremantle, Western Australia round the Cape of Good Hope, a passage that took 171 days.

Very distressed - transmission and damper plate failure

  • Thread starter DFish

  • Ask All Sailors

Hello Everyone, hope you are enjoying the water. My husband and I started cruising in May last year. Just before we left we installed a M-25XPB Universal/Westerbeke engine. We understand that this engine is in many Catalina 310s. We felt that the new engine would give us greater safety and reliability. The gearbox ZF10M failed after approximately 150 hours. We went through the usual checklist - our alignment, oil, and Morse cabling - all fine. We were in Vanuatu and paid to have a new gearbox sent to us and missed cruising around this sailing paradise. Our second gearbox failed after approximately 30 hours on the way to Kiribati. We bypassed Kiribati and went straight for the Marshall Islands. Back and fourth, incorrect parts were sent to us and trouble shooting - we have now been in Majuro, Marshall Islands for 3 months and still not yet mobile. Engine troubles have now dominated our time cruising. When we took off the damper plate (R&D 22B4) we found an amazing amount of wear with the teeth on the damper 50% worn away. We were wondering if anyone else has had trouble with their damper plate/gearboxes? We have been told that our situation is unique and feel isolated and distressed. Thank you, Cate and David

dparilla

Damper plates are wear items, and as such I swear they fail in groups. But there is always a chance that you received a substandard part. Perhaps even the spline on the transmission input shaft is suspect? Am I correct in assuming that the engine and gear box were new (and if not, how many hours were on the engine and gear box that you installed)? Is there any chance of damage to the prop shaft? What specific parts in the gear box are failing? Lastly, what condition is the transmission fluid when you have had these failures? Is it picking up particles or turning dark? Please give what specifics that you can.

Check the 310 Forum on this site Many of us have had problems with out damper plates. The best overall solution is to switch to a Sachs damper plate and get rid of the R&D one. It is a simple enough job that many of us have done the job ourselves at the dock. Just search the 310 forum with the key words "damper plate sachs R&D"

keys please

Sorry for your bad luck.... I have the M 25 xpb universal in my boat... it has the Hurth HBW 50 trans which is pretty light..... i had the tranny rebuilt last year and there was some wear showing on the internal syncros but not any on the damper plate.... but still replaced also..... i know with my tranny we are supposed to sail with the tranny in reverse or neutral but not in forward gear or it will cause problems with the damper plate and or tranny. Best of luck, brian

Wear Spline wear comes "chucking" the back and forth motion in the crankshaft from the power pulses of the cylinders firing. The springs and rubbers in the plate are supposed to help dampen this out. BE SURE to use a good grade spline grease and not assemble this dry. Also low rpm operation exaggerates this wear. Be sure your not over propped and lugging the motor. I'd for sure upgrade the plate as recommended by other users. Also BE SURE the alignment pins between the engine and transmission are all there and in good shape. This is a common failure point at higher hours. Sometimes the plates crack and fail also.As for the transmission failure at low hours, someone GOOD will need to determine the failure point as to if it was part quality, lack of or improper lubrication, assembly error or installation error. Better Luck! Bob

Maine Sail

What do you do with your gear when under sail? As for the damper the R&D plate seems to have a fairly high failure rate. A bunch of images of R&D damper spline wear are out there. Also if your idle is too low this WILL exacerbate damper plate wear and excess idling can also shorten life.

JK_Boston_Catalina310

JK_Boston_Catalina310

MS, Just so I am clear, on these engines when the idle is too slow mine shakes something awful. I presume this is what you are referring too. I typically run mine around 900-1000 RPM because that is where it flattens out and runs smooth. Thanks, Jesse

bigpapaporsche

I have been in the "Diesel Engine/Equipment" business for over 45 years and know that there is alway a reason that caused the failure, either a defective part or installation. Of course there are made designs. The trick is to connect the Dots that will lead to the true cause. The "Root Cause," of the failure MUST be found or the failure will repeat. Unfortunately, I don't know enough facts to help you much without pictures and a complete failure analysis. I am would like to know more about the "worn teeth" on the Flex Plate that you mentioned. I believe your motor uses an Adapter Plate, between the engine's Bellhousing and the Transmission, this must be precisely centered or transmission problems will develop. Good luck

Hi All, thanks for your replies. The engine was installed new last year, and has only minimal hours on it. It is nearly five months now since our first failure, and four since our second, so we haven't put much work on it yet. The alignment is good on the coupling, I have checked it many times, hoping to find an obvious problem. I have not stripped down the transmissions, as they are under warranty. Westerbeke assessed the first one, but will not share their findings with us. The oil was thick and dark, so I assume the clutch cone has disintegrated. There is no power at all in forward, the shaft spins slowly but does not increase in RPM when the throttle is increased. Reverse works as normal. I have had a dial indicator on the flywheel, which is true. We always sail with the transmission in reverse, to stop the shaft spinning. This is per the manual. The teeth in the damper are worn in a manner similar to many images I have seen on this forum. I am having trouble attaching images. Westerbeke have said that this failure has sometimes occurred when Repowering, but that they do not see this failure in production boats. They named Catalina specifically as having no such problems. The inference is that it is our boat which is causing the problems. The experiences I read about on this forum suggest this may not be the case. Westerbeke are sending a new damper, make unknown, to replace the R&D. They have supplied a rebuilt ZF10M. They have stressed the importance of setting the idle above 1000rpm. It does remain that for 5 of the 9 months we have had this engine, it has not worked. Our cruising plans are completely dashed by this, but we can hardly move on to other things while we're stuck waiting for parts. Certainly not the experience we worked for so many years for. Cheers, David.

uncledom

David I'm sure this is not the trip you planned but it could be worse for sure. I have dealt with manufacturers that won't give you the time of day once you have purchased their product. I could name two off the top of my head. At least Westerbeke is talking to you and sending warranty items. I hope you're having nice weather and plenty of rum.

trans woes No direct experience with the engine trans combo. But I agree that the splines must be greased - use as heavy/thick extreme pressure grease as you can find. What kind of oil are you using in the trans? My Hurth 150 gets Mobil one SYN ATF. Increase airflow around the trans to enhance cooling if possible Adjust the valves on your engine to specs. Get the intakes all to the same spec and exhaust to same spec. Just to be clear: if your intake says .005" to .007" set them all at .006". I'm not saying set I & E at the same spec. I am saying make all the intake the same, make all exh. the same. Check your injector timing if possible. These steps make the engine run as smooth as possible. If you're not confident find a real mechanic if you can, Your shift lever should, (with no cable on) engage a detent in forward or "notch" into place. The shift cable when in forward position at helm, should slip in place on the trans lever. The lever throw can't be short, as if its pulling the lever out of gear toward neutral. Adjust cable as needed. You said you have a dial gauge. Have you checked prop shaft runout on centers (out of boat? How about with prop spinning/engine running? Repeated failures are sometimes caused by overlooking the basics,. Assume nothing - check everything. Good luck! Dave

When they replaced the engine when did they do the shaft alignment? A shaft alignment can be done in the cradle but it is not complete. The boat should be in the water at least 24 hours and then a final shaft alignment check should be done. Waterborne the stresses on the hull are different than when in the cradle and will affect alignment. One other thing I can suggest is shaft thrust. I would suggest you check that too.

Brian M H23

Is it possible that the gear shift linkage is only partially engaging? Alignment aside, that's about the only way I can imagine the "boat" being the problem.

Frank Wightman: A Langebaan Legend

by mueed-admin | Apr 23, 2019 | General | 0 comments

wylo 11 yacht

Many a small town in South Africa has stories about locals that became famous (or infamous in some cases) for their uniqueness, quirks or unbelievable feats. They become legends; their stories being carried on and told from generation to generation.

In the case of Langebaan, the beautiful seaside village on the West Coast famed for its gorgeous lagoon, that legend came in the form of Frank Wightman.

Frank Wightman had an incredible life; a lone sailor that tackled the open seas on a boat he built himself. While Frank’s incredible feats of sailing around the world on his beloved boat is fantastic to hear, it is his undeniable love for the Langebaan lagoon and Kraalbaai that precedes his legend – and will continue to do so for years to come.

Frank Armstrong Wightman was born in 1896 in Johannesburg to British immigrant parents. During his childhood years, Frank and his parents would make the journey by boat between England and South Africa often, which no doubt was the first spark that let to the ignition of his passion for sailing.

The trips between England and South Africa inspired Frank’s love for boats and open sea sailing – and it would stick with him until the day he died.

As an adult, Frank eventually returned to South Africa to stay, and started building his very own sailboat called ‘Wylo’ . ‘Wylo’ would soon become the love of Frank’s life.

Just before the start of WWII, Frank sailed ‘Wylo’ to Saldanha Bay on the West Coast from where she was docked in Table Bay harbour for safekeeping. The war was imminent at this point, and he didn’t want his precious boat to be destroyed should it come to that.

Upon reaching the West Coast, Frank fell in love once again: this time with Langebaan and its gorgeous lagoon.

Frank loved Langebaan and the lagoon (especially the Kraalbaai area) so much, that he lived on ‘Wylo’ on the lagoon for several years. The war was still ongoing, and Frank desperately wanted to join the navy, although he would be considered too old.

His dream finally became a reality when he eventually joined the navy – by lying about his age! He was 46 at the time, but said on his official papers that he was 37 years old.

After serving in the navy for the remainder of the war, Frank returned to Langebaan and was reunited with his beloved ‘Wylo’ . He could now finally realise another dream of his: sailing around the world and tackling the open seas with ‘Wylo’ .

Frank set out to conquer the seas with only one other person on board; artist, photographer and his only shipmate, Graham Young.

The pair made it to Brazil, and then thereafter sailed to Trinidad. It was here that Young got an opportunity in New York, and had to leave Frank and ‘Wylo’ alone in Trinidad. Frank became sad and lonely, and then, decided to do the unthinkable: he sold ‘ Wylo’ to a man in Trinidad and then returned to Cape Town.

Frank Wightman & Graham Young

It was during this period, back in Cape Town, that Frank penned his first book – that is still considered a wonderful tale to this day. Ask any lone sailor, and they will more likely than not know about Frank’s book, ‘ The Wind is Free’.

After publishing his book, Frank managed to save enough money to asks the man from Trinidad to whom he sold his boat, to buy her back. The man was kind hearted and gave ‘Wylo’ back to Frank as a gift.

Needless to say, Frank was over the moon to be reunited with his beloved ‘Wylo’.

For the next two years, Franks sailed man alone around the Bahamas, and eventually made it to Baltimore in the US.

From Baltimore, Frank planned on sailing back to Cape Town, but instead he and ‘Wylo’ boarded a freight ship back to Cape Town.

By 1950, Frank was back in Langebaan, back in Kraalbaai, with ‘Wylo’. It was during this time that he wrote his second book, ‘Wylo Sails Again’.

Over the next 15 years, Frank became somewhat of a hermit, retreating almost completely from society and only going to Langebaan from his home on the ‘ Wylo’ docked in Kraalbaai and the Oesterval Farm to collect supplies. He started to gain a reputation, as the remarkable sailor that sailed the world and lived on his custom built boat in Kraalbaai.

He lived a quiet life on the lagoon, and the locals just grew to be more intrigued by him, his legend growing through the years.

wylo 11 yacht

Finally, in 1965, Frank sailed away from ‘Wylo’ for the last time. He had decided to move to land, and because of his age, wanted to sleep in a bed, and be sheltered properly in a house. Frank had planned to give ‘Wylo’ a proper viking send off, but in the end decided against it and sold her for 300 pounds.

Frank then left for Cape Town.

However, it wasn’t long before his heart yearned for his beloved Kraalbaai and beautiful lagoon once more, and in 1966, he returned to Langebaan, and as he said he missed his ‘Golden Harbour’ too much.

Frank became ill in the years that followed, but lived out the rest of his life overlooking his beautiful lagoon and Kraalbaai.

Frank passed away in 1970, and his death was much talked about in the town. He was mourned, and celebrated for his extraordinary life and love for Langebaan and its lagoon.

He was cremated and is buried on the Oesterval Farm in Langebaan which he frequented. His grave is still there, and features a beautiful bronze plaque engraved with an impression of ‘Wylo’ sailing the open seas – as they loved to do so much in this life.

Being a historical building itself, The Farmhouse Hotel loves pays homage to a Langebaan legend like Frank. That’s why they have named the stunning dula-level cottage on the property the Frank Wightman Cottage

The beautifully quaint cottage features a gorgeous spiral staircase and a wooden floored lounge with a large window overlooking the lagoon – just as Frank would’ve loved looking over his precious lagoon.

We believe there is a little bit of Frank Wightman magic in this beautiful cottage.

Falkor at anchor

Close-up of Falkor

Close-up of Falkor

Layout

Storage under nav station

SORRY, NOW SOLD! We (a family with two kids) bought Falkor in spring 2015 from the first owner. We were looking for a solid bluewater yacht. Falkor convinced us with its space and its thought through layout. We got a lot of boat on 9.40 m length. Add to that the seaworthiness that she proved in five Atlantic crossings. You can find more pictures and an expose in English and German on Falkor 's for sale page found at www.bluewatersailboatforsale.com. And as we are currently still living on the boat, so you can see up to date pictures on Sherrie's Instagram site at https://www.instagram.com/sherriemccarthy/. The hull was built by the German boatyard Bauwerft Adolf Laux. The interior was professionally done in robust quality by the previous owner. It was built for longevity and practical usage. The layout with a aft cabin makes for a lot of living room for a 31 feet boat. Falkor can be sailed single-handed without a problem. I did so for hundreds of miles. Falkor has lived up and beyond our expectations. We sailed her from the Baltics through the English Channel to the Atlantic Coast. From there via France and Spain to Portugal. We crossed the Atlantic in fall 2017. Since then we are sailing in the Eastern Caribbean. We always felt safe and have never had doubt in our boat. Since we live permanently on the boat we use it daily and thus maintain and replace gear whenever needed. Our kids are growing constantly but Falkor is unfortunately not. Since we want to live on a boat long term Falkor is getting slowly but surely too small for us. That led us to the difficult decision to sell our beloved boat. Detailed Description The boat is built very solid and ready for bluewater cruising – not only on the 'coconut route'. Due to its insulation and heating she can also be sailed in colder climates. Falkor has a solid, thought through interior. There is no noise while sailing which happens on many modern construction boats. The main color is white with brown wooden strips. This makes for a bright and friendly interior. The sail layout with its two furlers gives a lot of flexibility. The rig is solid with a Selden mast. The engine is from Bukh – a boat diesel that is also used in rescue boats due to its reliability. These qualities made Falkor the right yacht for the big trip. We knew she could take us anywhere. Falkor is in a good condition and can be taken right away to the next destination. No noteworthy rust. Falkor is ready for the next adventure. Rig & Sails Falkor has a Sloop rig with two furlers (genoa and jib, known as the Solent Rig ) that can be operated from the Cockpit. Each front sail comes with its whisker pole for downwind sailing. The big Genoa is our 'work horse'. We often use only that sail which is out in a few seconds. It is brand new, we replaced it in 2018. The mainsail has a conventional reefing system with 3 reef points. The foresails have built in UV protection, the mainsail comes with a sail cover. Hull Falkor has a semi long keel with a massive 10 mm bottom plate. The keel is filled with lead. The robust rudder has three hinges and a skeg. It is operated with a tiller. The hull is in good condition without noteworthy rust. It was primed with a 2 component primer on the inside and outside directly after sand blasting. Motor & Electrics Falkor comes with a Bukh DV 24 engine, built in 1999 with about 3600 hours. The Danish Bukh engines were specifically developed as ship engines and are often used in rescue boats. They have a reputation of reliable, robust engines. We have never had a problem with our engine. The engine setup was designed with ease of maintenance in mind. The engine is accessible from the front, top and behind. The oil change can be done with ease due to a pump that empties motor and gearbox. The seawater pump has a see through top, the state of the impeller can be checked without opening the pump. Between the gearbox and the shaft is a Python drive. It avoids axial pressure on the gearbox and makes the setup robust against alignment problems. Interior Falkor has a center cockpit with a cabin in the back. The interior is white with wooden strips. This makes it bright and spacious. The height is 1.83 m, in the front 1.77 m. The floor is covered with wooden boards, the dry bilge allows for storage. Layout Sleeping: There is a classic triangle bed in the front. It is suitable for one adult or two children. The mattresses are covered with waterproof lining. A big hatch (Lewmar Offshore 50x50 cm) gives air and light. Going aft you find 2 beds (1,90 m). They come outfitted with lee cloths and are the best place to sleep at sea. The aft cabin is under and behind the cockpit. There is plenty of space to sit up in the head area. The bed area is spacious (1.40 m x 2.00 m) The aft cabin can be accessed from the inside and via the back hatch which also provides lots of fresh air. Bathroom/Head The bathroom contains a pump toilet with holding tank and direct sea outlet. The holding tank can be emptied at sea. The toilet is higher than the water level and thus prevents sinking due to an open sea valve. The bathroom contains a cabinet with lots of room and is also home for the Diesel day tank which is easily accessible. Navigation station The Navigation table is designed as a stand up table. This allows for plenty of storage with a big chart compartment and deep drawers. They contain kitchen utensils, spare parts and tools. The walls hold several electronic instruments such as GPS, AIS etc. See equipment list for full specs. Sean 'Diddy' Combs' son accused of sex assault in lawsuit that also names music mogul as defendant

LOS ANGELES — Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is a subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation , has been named as a defendant in a new lawsuit that alleges his son sexually assaulted a woman while she was working on a yacht the music mogul had chartered for a trip at the end of 2022.

The allegation is the latest in a wave of lawsuits accusing Combs , 54, of sexual assault, sexual trafficking and engaging in other criminal activity. He has denied all the allegations, calling them sickening.

In the suit filed Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Grace O’Marcaigh alleges that Christian Combs, 26, sexually assaulted her in late December 2022 while she was working on a boat charter that had been “sold as a wholesome family excursion” but turned into a “hedonistic environment.”

The alleged assault happened just days before Sean Combs hosted a New Year’s Eve yacht party with a long list of celebrity guests .

Christian Combs is accused of sexual assault, sexual harassment and infliction of emotional distress in the lawsuit. Sean Combs is being sued for premises liability as the person who chartered the yacht and for aiding and abetting his son in the alleged assault.

A lawyer for the father and son called Thursday's suit "lewd and meritless" and said it was "filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts we’ve come to expect" from O’Marcaigh's lawyer, Tyrone Blackburn.

The lawyer, Aaron Dyer, said his legal team plans on filing a motion to dismiss the suit.

“Like father, like son," Blackburn said Thursday night after the suit was filed. "It gives us no joy or pleasure in filing this suit against Christian Combs who has clearly adopted his father’s pattern and practice of depravity."

In the yacht studio

In her suit, O’Marcaigh alleges that Christian Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her. She included transcriptions of audio clips that she states are evidence of her denying his advances as he gropes her. The suit states that the clips were recorded by a producer in the studio.

O’Marcaigh, who was 25 at the time of the alleged assault, worked as a steward providing dinner and drink service on the yacht from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and witnessed partying and drug use between a “constant rotation of suspected sex workers” and celebrities, the suit states. She also alleges in the complaint that she suspected bottles of alcohol were laced with drugs because women began to fall over themselves, panic or pass out after just one drink.

Around Dec. 28, 2022, O’Marcaigh was informed that Christian Combs would be joining the party to record with music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones in the yacht’s makeshift studio, the suit states.

puff daddy diddy sean

Christian Combs had been staying on shore at a villa, but often joined his father in the evenings, according to the suit. The woman’s suit alleges that he arrived “heavily intoxicated” and that he paid an inappropriate amount of attention to her. Christian then pressured O’Marcaigh to take shots of tequila that she believes he brought onboard, according to the suit.

After she took the shot, O’Marcaigh states in the lawsuit, Christian Combs became aggressive and insisted she drink more.

O’Marcaigh became fearful and began to feel the effect of the tequila, which she “quickly suspected” had been spiked, the suit states.

The situation “escalated” as Christian Combs groped O’Marcaigh’s legs, breast, anus and vagina, the suit states. The suit details audio recordings in which it states O’Marcaigh can be heard declining alcohol, saying she had to leave, and telling Christian Combs to stop touching her with what sounds like kissing noises in the background.

The audio was recorded by Jones, the producer who was in the studio during the alleged assault and who has alleged in his own lawsuit that he was required to record Sean Combs “constantly” and had hours of footage in which the music mogul and his staff allegedly engaged in criminal conduct.

NBC News has heard two clips of audio transcribed in the suit purportedly from the night of Dec. 28, 2022, but has not verified who was recorded.

“Excuse me, you don’t touch my legs like that. I’ll move my legs where I want to,” O’Marcaigh is heard saying in the recording detailed in the suit. “If I want to do this, then I will. You don’t touch my legs like that.”

“Listen, you and everybody in the crew,” Christian Combs allegedly replies.

“I can’t, I have to go down,” O’Marcaigh says. “I have to go down.”

Christian Combs then insists that O’Marcaigh stay with him, but she responds that she cannot unless he makes that request to a crew leader, the suit states, citing the audio recording.

O’Marcaigh answered this way because she knew “anyone of authority” who could approve the request would be asleep and Christian Combs would not be able to contact them, the suit states.

“Who can I talk to? I’m going to say I requested you right now,” Christian Combs said, according to the suit.

“Well, you can take your hand off my ass for the first thing,” O’Marcaigh responded.

O’Marcaigh then attempted to resume her duties and finish her shift once she was able to leave the studio, the suit states. Christian Combs allegedly found her a short time later and insisted she find him a place to sleep.

She directed him to the yacht cinema, which was used as an extra sleeping area, where he blocked her in, the suit states.

Christian Combs allegedly began to grope her and took off his clothes.

“His penis was erect, and he grabbed her arms and was trying to force PLAINTIFF to perform oral sex on him,” the suit states.

The suit includes photos of bruising on O’Marcaigh’s forearm and alleges it was caused when Christian Combs grabbed her.

O’Marcaigh fought him off until someone else walked in, according to the suit.

Since the alleged attack

The alleged assault had a deep impact on O’Marcaigh’s mental health as well as her professional and personal lives, the suit said. When O’Marcaigh complained to the yacht captain the next day, the suit alleges, the captain did not believe her and failed to investigate.

She alleges that the captain retaliated against her until she was terminated in May 2023.

Her mental health deteriorated, and the woman had anxiety and panic attacks as well as severe suicidal ideations, the suit said. O’Marcaigh alleges that the emotional strain affected her physical health and that she developed an eating disorder and epileptic seizures following the assault.

She is seeking unspecified damages.

"I am here to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves and I applaud Grace for being so brave to come forward with her truth," attorney Rodney S. Diggs said of his client. "Hopefully her story will inspire others to come forward."

O’Marcaigh’s suit is the first to accuse Christian Combs of sexual assault. Since November, his father, Sean Combs, has been accused in lawsuits of sexual assault by four women, which he has repeatedly denied.

One of those suits has been settled , and the others have not been resolved.

Jones, a producer who worked for Sean Combs from September 2022 to November 2023, alleged the rapper sexually harassed him, pressured him to engage in sexual acts and forced him to procure sex workers. He said he witnessed Sean Combs giving drinks laced with drugs to people at parties.

An attorney for Combs said Jones’ “reckless name-dropping about events that are pure fiction and simply did not happen is nothing more than a transparent attempt to garner headlines.”

On March 25, agents with Homeland Security Investigations searched Sean Combs’ properties in Los Angeles and Miami. A source familiar with the investigation told NBC News that a federal investigation began before this year and that authorities were aware of the layout of Combs’ properties before the raids.

During the searches last month, federal agents discovered guns and seized his phones as part of a warrant issued from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, law enforcement sources have said. Christian Combs was detained at his father’s Los Angeles home last month when Homeland Security Investigations executed a search warrant, but he was not arrested.

Investigators are also looking into allegations of statutory rape against Sean Combs, the source said.

NBC News previously reported that at least three women and one man have been interviewed by federal investigators in relation to allegations of sex trafficking, sexual assault and the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms.

Aaron Dyer, one of Combs’ attorneys, issued a statement following last month’s property searches and said that Combs “was never detained but spoke to and cooperated with authorities.” He described the search as an ambush, saying there’s been a rush to judgment based on “meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits.”

“There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations,” Dyer said. “Mr. Combs is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name.”
