Y focus on carbon: Custom Tripp 90 by YYachts

  • November 19, 2021

Specialising in luxury carbon sailing yachts from 70-100ft, Germany’s YYachts has launched its custom-built Tripp 90, which features an exterior by Bill Tripp and a richly detailed interior by Winch Design – and will be followed by the Y9 model in 2022. By John Higginson.

Designed by Bill Tripp, the US-flagged Prevail is a custom build by YYachts

As Bill Tripp walks the deck of Prevail during its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, he’s proud but also a little excited.

That’s because the American naval architect is looking ahead to a potential trip to the Caribbean, where he has been invited to join the owner for some sailing on the custom-designed Tripp 90, which was showcased in Cannes alongside the Y7, an earlier design by the American that helped YYachts establish its reputation.

Prevail has a carbon hull, superstructure, mast, boom and sails, and a flush deck with sustainable Lignia wood

After Prevail was launched by YYachts from its shipyard outside Greifswald on Germany’s northeast coast, Tripp was among those involved in sea trials in the Baltic Sea, when he says conditions were “a little too calm”.

However, Prevail ’s owner, an American with strong ties to Europe, has already spent quite a bit of time on his carbon-fibre performance cruiser in the Mediterranean, with Tripp saying the 90ft sloop has clocked 18 knots and should be able to get up to about 25 when it really gets to stretch its legs.

Provisional plans are for Prevail to stay in Mallorca in Spain before heading across the Atlantic to the likes of the Caribbean and New England, where Tripp himself is based in Connecticut.

“The owner has already spent a lot of time on the yacht in the Med and really enjoyed it. We advised that he enjoy the boat for a while, then we’ll spend a little time fine-tuning it for racing,” says Tripp, who says the owner’s 2022 plans include the Caribbean 600 in Antigua in February and potentially the Rolex Middle Sea Race around Sicily in October.

The American-owned yacht will be used on both sides of the Atlantic

“It’s primarily a cruising boat built for bluewater sailing, but will do some racing. The owner may bring the boat back to Europe later next year and he also plans to cruise around the world. We’re just delighted he’s happy with the yacht.”

YYACHTS’ CARBON TRIP

The owner’s previous boats included a design by Tripp, who has close ties to YYachts, which Michael Schmidt founded in 2015 to build fast luxury sailing yachts made of carbon, which is stiffer and lighter than fibreglass but more expensive.

The yard, also known as Michael Schmidt Yachtbau, is focused on streamlined designs, easy sailing and a clean, minimalist deck. Its semi-custom models start from the Y7, a Tripp-designed 70-footer with a Norm Architects interior that has proved its best-selling model, with about a dozen units already sold.

It was followed by the Y8, an 80-footer drawn by Italian Lorenzo Argento with five sales, while next year’s new builds will include the first Y9, a semi-custom model sharing much of the naval architecture and exterior design of the Tripp 90 but with a wide range of interior layouts.

Twin helms control the self-tacking jib and hydraulically operated boom-rolled mainsail

This September, YYachts was proud to show Prevail at Cannes, where it was the second-longest yacht in the Sailing Area in Port Canto. It’s also the latest product of the YC custom division, whose portfolio includes the Explorer 72 Eugen Seibold , designed for scientists to conduct climate and marine research, and fitted with an advanced hybrid diesel-electric drive and large battery bank.

FLAGSHIP SUPREME

Three B&G touch screens above the coachroof

Prevail uses carbon for the hull, superstructure, mast, boom and sails, while the rig includes a self-tacking jib and hydraulically operated boom-rolled mainsail. Tripp says the hull shape is optimised to sail at 12 degrees, while the yacht also features a lifting keel, a challenging feature to integrate and disguise in the interior design.

Like all YYachts boats, the Tripp 90 is designed for short-handed sailing, with the 55-tonne yacht able to be handled by the three crew, all sailors. The flush deck features YYachts’ sustainable Lignia wood, which looks great, doesn’t get hot and is an eco-friendly alternative to teak.

y yacht 90

The clean aft deck hides a lazarette

The surprises start aft, where a lazarette door hidden in the expansive deck folds up to reveal a huge storage space that can house an inflatable 3.5m RIB, along with a lot else. Just in front is a smaller liferaft locker that can deploy automatically in emergencies.

“I think the hardest part of putting together a project like this is to make the technology invisible,” says Tripp, who worked on his first carbon boat in 1985 and whose carbon designs include a 165-footer.

y yacht 90

“Fortunately, the shapes of boats now make them faster and allow us to make the layouts more interesting.”

Situated well forward of the stern, each of the two steering wheels are backed by a full navigation station with controls, displays and throttle, while further in front are a pair of winches with power buttons at foot height. The sailing stations are flanked by thick coamings that also frame the roomy lounging area, comprising large C-shaped sofas and adjustable tables.

Aft of the coamings, two steps lead to the side decks that run past the distinctive coachroof to a massive flush foredeck, where there’s a wide well for the self-tacking jib just forward of the mast. The area is peppered with skylights for the cabins below, while instead of fitted sunpads, there are flexible sun loungers that can be picked up and put anywhere. The bowsprit houses the anchor.

SALOON OF TWO HALVES

Both the aft and central cockpit areas can be covered by biminis and lead to the interior, which is quite the show-stopper. Winch Design worked closely with the owner to create a stylish, timeless ambience, with stylistic inspirations from the US east coast and mid-century Scandinavia.

Studded, curved steps down to the distinctive, split-level ‘saloon of two halves’

“One of the most magical moments is when you realise how homely and comfortable Prevail feels as soon as you step inside,” says Joost Roes, Senior Project Manager and Designer at Winch Design.

As you descend the steps, you’re struck by three things. Firstly, the large windows around all four sides of the coachroof, which combine with the large ceiling skylights to provide the interior with plenty of natural light and expansive views.

Winch Design handled the interior, which features a raised dining area to port

Secondly, the materials and detailing, which are above and beyond what you’d typically find on a sailing yacht, even of this size.

A rich yet tasteful combination of finely finished woodwork, beautifully stitched leathers, stainless-steel detailing and recessed lighting ensure your eyes continue to explore, whichever room you’re in. Look out for the use of bare carbon, a nod to the exterior.

Beautiful cabinets aft of the dining area (pictured) and saloon

Among woods, the owner selected a flamed Anigre, which was stained to contrast with the oak floor, while there are accent timbers such as Macassar and walnut, and feature panels in rosewood. The colour combination of these natural timbers and leathers alongside upholstery in whites, greys and blues works well.

Tripp himself is a fan. “When you go down below, you’re immediately hit with the smell of wood and leather. It’s a wonderful environment, a completely different world. You feel like you’re in a luxury hotel, a place you really want to stay in.”

The saloon enjoys natural light through the coachroof, hull windows and skylights

Thirdly, it’s different. Having the engine room underneath the saloon has contributed to a split-level layout – not fore and aft, but port and starboard.

To port, the raised dining area has an extendable table and bench seating, where diners are almost at eye level with the coachroof windows and enjoy a clear view outside through the cockpit.

The lounge is down two steps to starboard and features a beautiful leather chair and an L-shaped sofa that can convert into a daybed. The sofa fits snugly under the long hull window, yet its inward view is of the back of the dining-table seating.

CABINS AND MORE

However, it’s worth remembering Prevail was not designed for repeat production but solely for its for its owner, a keen musician who wanted a versatile layout for entertaining guests, while also enabling people to retreat from a party, resulting in the creation of separate relaxation areas.

Forward of the saloon is a semi-private office space with chaise longue

For example, ahead of the saloon and down three steps is a semi-private ‘snug’ or office, which has a desk, a daybed, an amplifier and hanging space for the owner’s guitar.

To port is the twin en-suite guest cabin, which like all the guest areas, features top-end detailing such as stainless-steel door handles and leather-wrapped cupboard and drawer handles.

The master suite is forward and has a forward-facing double with bedside tables to port. To starboard is a vanity table and a couch – the third sofa along this side of the boat – while the elegantly finished twin-sink bathroom is in the bow.

Looking aft from the bedroom to the other hallway shows the long sight lines the designers sought to incorporate.

Aft of the saloon and down several steps leads starboard to the blue-and-white galley and port to the VIP double. In the stern is the crew quarters, which include a double cabin for the skipper and his wife, a single cabin, crew mess and access to the engine room.

All in all, it’s a remarkable yacht and a refreshingly personal one that succeeded due to impressive teamwork during a testing time for international collaborations.

Video tour: YYachts Tripp 90

  • Toby Hodges
  • October 8, 2021

Bill Tripp and Winch Design combine to stunning effect on YYacht's latest carbon build. Yachting Word's Toby Hodges toured this bespoke YYachts Tripp 90 during the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021

Over the past few years YYachts has cemented a reputation for producing large composite yachts that are remarkably uncomplicated and therefore easy and fun to sail. The German yard’s latest launch is a custom YYachts Tripp 90, which was unveiled at the recent Cannes boat show , where she was on display next to the existing YYachts Y7 and Y8 models.

The new boat was developed for an American owner who plans to use it for both worldwide cruising and racing. Key requirements included the ability to operate with only three sailors when cruising, yet be competitive in regatta mode.

y yacht 90

YYachts tends to eschew deck saloons with huge expanses of glass, as these heat the boat’s interior, placing a greater dependence on air conditioning systems. However, a key part of the brief for the YYachts Tripp 90 was to be able to look out to sea when sitting in the saloon.

The solution designer Bill Tripp developed is a relatively low profile New England-style coachroof with extensive vertical glazing.

Nevertheless, when the sun is almost overhead this will not contribute significantly to heating the accommodation.

y yacht 90

Winch Design drew on both US East Coast and mid 20th century Scandinavian influences for the interior styling. This combines soft leather with a mixture of timbers to produce an atmosphere of understated elegance.

Key features include a split-level saloon, hand-crafted companionway steps that evoke a waterfall, impressive sightlines running the length of the boat, ‘freestanding’ mid-century inspired pieces, and a real continuity of style and materials throughout.

YYachts continues its successful cooperation with Bill Tripp. The Custom Division of the Greifswald shipyard just launched a 90-foot carbon sloop, the design and construction of which came from the drawing board of the US designer. The yacht, one of the biggest sailing yachts ever built in Germany, has been ordered by an American customer who plans to use the yacht for both racing and worldwide cruising. However, before she sails with her new owner, the yacht will undergo intensive testing on the Baltic Sea near Greifswald. Bill Tripp is also on site and enthusiastic about the performance: “The yacht sails exceptionally well. Together with Michael Schmidt Yachtbau, we have set a standard here that others first have to achieve.”

The interior design of the Tripp 90 is by Winch Design from London. The spacious interior is minimalist and open-plan, benefiting from plenty of natural light. Drawing stylistic inspiration from the U.S. East Coast and mid-century Scandinavian influences, as well as soft leather and light oak wood, the ambiance exudes understated elegance. “On board, you feel like you’re in a luxury hotel. A fantastic job,” comments Bill Tripp on the achievement of his colleague Andrew Winch.

Dirk Zademack, Managing Director of YYachts, says: “With Bill Tripp we are cooperating with one of the best naval architects in the world. To implement the Tripp 90 with him after the Y7 solidifies our collaboration, which will be followed by another example very soon.”

The Tripp 90 is another yacht being built in the Custom Division of the Greifswald shipyard. Previously, the yard built the 22-meter “Eugen Seibold,” an innovative research vessel for the Swiss Werner Siemens Foundation.

A Sailboat We Love: The Modern and Elegant YYachts Tripp 90

yacht tripp 90

The new YYachts Tripp 90 is one of the largest sailing yachts built in Germany and benefits from the expertise of a renowned shipyard and a talented architect, who already collaborated on the Y7 .

Designed by the YYachts Custom department, the Tripp 90, named after her creator Bill Tripp, used carbon (hull, internal structures, and rigging) for optimized weight savings, which makes her competitive in regatta and performant in blue water sailing.

yyachts tripp 90

Easy to maneuver and equipped with thrusters, the new Tripp 90 can be handled by a crew of three. Her modern design features a large deckhouse: the sea view is omnipresent even when seated in the saloon while light floods the interiors, designed by London-based Winch Design. Winch wanted starkness and openness, as underlined by both Scandinavian and East Coast American influences using leather and light oak.

The Tripp 90 has been nominated at the International Yacht & Aviation Awards, in the category “Sailing yachts up to 40 meters”.

“ The owner has already spent a lot of time on the yacht in the Mediterranean and really enjoyed it. We advised that he enjoy the boat for a while, then we’ll spend a little time fine-tuning it for racing ,” says Tripp. The owner’s 2022 plans include the Caribbean 600 in Antigua in February and potentially the  Rolex Middle Sea Race around Sicily in October.

YYachts Custom Yacht Tripp 90 Prevail: Review

YYachts has launched its custom-built Tripp 90, which features an exterior by Bill Tripp and a detailed interior.

YYachts debuted the custom-designed Tripp 90, christened “Prevail”. It was showcased in Cannes alongside the Y7, an earlier design by the American-based company that helped YYachts establish its reputation.

After Prevail was launched by YYachts from its shipyard outside Greifswald in Germany, it underwent sea trials in the Baltic Sea.

In September this year, YYachts debuted Prevail at Cannes where it was the second-largest yacht in the Sailing Area in Port Canto.

The Tripp 90 is YYacht’s flagship, measuring at 97 feet and a 22-foot beam. Tripp Design handled the naval architecture, exterior and layouts, while the owner chose UK-based Winch Design for the interior, with Prevail marking the third collaboration between the two design studios.

Prevail   uses carbon for the hull, superstructure, mast, boom and sails, while the rig includes a self-tacking jib and hydraulically operated boom-rolled mainsail.

“Prevail   shows that everything is possible when selecting the right partners,” says Roes of Winch Design. “We’re very proud of what we achieved together with the Tripp and YYachts teams.”

Our Y9 is unique and so is every single Y9. Above all, she is as individual as our customers themselves, because her layout and equipment are completely variable. Complementing this, the Y9 offers the volume of a 100-foot yacht in 90 feet. And she is available in three exciting versions – Y9, Y9 Pilot House, Y9 Custom. The main focus for Y9 owners is spending time with family and friends on board. As a result, the 90-foot carbon sailing yacht is easy to sail even with a small crew. Her interior design fulfills and even extends all owners' wishes for a family yacht with sufficient privacy while they travel the world. Of course, the Y9 can also prove her potential on regatta courses in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean and sail right at the front of the field.

Y9 // Y Yachts

German shipyard y yachts unveiled the new y9 - a 90 feet/27m sailing yacht.

Check the launched yacht Y9/Tripp 90 here .

The new Y9 is based on proven partners like Tripp Design (exterior and naval architecture) and Norm Architects (interior). They created the awesome sailing yacht model Y7 . There is also another interior design studio involved that worked with Y Yachts in projects like the Yx7 or the research vessel Eugen Seibold  – The UK-based studio Design Unlimited .

As the other yacht models, also the Y9 is made of carbon-fiber to enjoy fast cruising or start with excellent opportunities to win some international regattas.

Y Yachts founder Michael Schmidt explains why to be under 100 feet:

“Actually, customers were interested in 100 feet in length. However, from this size upwards – in my experience – yachts become disproportionately expensive because many custom-built components have to be installed. With our expertise, we have therefore implemented the comfort of a 100-foot yacht on a length of 90 feet. With our new Y9, we are entering the superyacht segment.”

Interior design by Norm Architects and Design Unlimited

The owner’s cabin in the stern area is more an apartment that contains a private salon, a bathroom with a double sink, a dressing room, and a separate shower. The project stakeholders also have an eye on an extra-large crew area with storage and a crew lounge. Owners can choose between two different interior layouts that are based on this interior concept.

The design studios created a “soft-minimalism” Scandinavian style with oiled oak and grey fabrics.

Katrine Goldstein, Managing Director of Norm Architects comments:

“The Y9 already follows the award-winning Y7 in its design, but is much more complex and goes deeper. The Y9 will also be a luxurious retreat to get away from the constant stimulation that our everyday lives bring. Mark Tucker, founder of Design Unlimited adds: “Clients will appreciate the authenticity of our design and the sustainable materials we recommend. People are increasingly orienting themselves towards nature: taking from nature and giving back to nature. This principle is particularly pervasive in the luxury market.”

The 27.4m/89.9ft sailing yacht TRIPP 90 is constructed from carbon by German shipyard YY Yachts with naval architecture and exterior styling from American Tripp Design. The American Owner requested a luxury sloop that could compete in regattas as well as oceangoing capability. The request for sweeping sea views resulted in another bespoke touch: glass surroundings in the salon for 360° views. The elegant minimalist interiors by British studio Winch Design use pale oak and soft leather, and have been described as inspired by Scandinavia and the eastern coast of the US. The guest accommodation and crew numbers have yet to be revealed by the shipyard. The TRIPP 90 sailing yacht has a launch date set for late 2020.

NOTABLE FEATURES OF TRIPP 90: ~Lightweight carbon construction for shallow draft and performance ~360° windows in salon ~Created by internationally acclaimed designers ~Racing capability ~Designed for ocean cruising ~Scandinavian and US eastern seaboard-inspired interiors ~Air conditioning ~Wi-Fi

Exterior concept images show two helm stations to the aft, forward of which is a spacious outdoor cockpit designed for outdoor lounging and alfresco dining between all guests on board. The coach house roof covers the area forward of amidships, and the foredeck has been left clear for crew operations. While at anchor, the area can be used for exercise, observation and sunbathing.

The interiors from Winch Design are inspired by the United States east coast and Scandinavia, and have a minimalist appearance that uses pale oak and leather to further emphasise the sense of space in the brightly illuminated environment.

Guests unwinding in the salon have a glass windows around them that provide clear views of the surroundings as well as an abundance of natural light.

EASY TO SAIL distinct simplicity

Y7 - easy to sail distinct simplicity.

A displacement of about only 29 tons and 300 square meters of sail area, set this almost 22 meter, 70 foot, long yacht in motion even in the lightest of winds. Her good ballast ratio keeps her very stable, so that a Y7 is extremely pleasant to sail. This luxury yacht was designed for family vacations as it can be operated with a very small crew or even alone. Easy handling combined with excellent performance and an interior completely tailored to the owner has made the Y7 a bestseller in the YYachts portfolio.

The new interior of the Y7

Timeless and maritime.

We have once again revised and optimized the interior of our popular Y7. The current Y7 already shows these details: The doors to all rooms now have rounded corners and thus a very maritime shape, as do almost all upholstered surfaces. The color tones are dominated by light fabrics and woods, giving the interior a timeless and modern touch.

Sailing Faster

A Y7 is much faster than a conventional 65 or 70 foot yacht. Our goal is to experience sailing fun in the Mediterranean with light winds.

Easy Handling

All halyards, sheets and trimming lines run concealed to the steering positions - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time.

Proven Technology

YYachts only uses components that have proven themselves hundreds of times. Days lost due to vulnerable technology are a no-go on this luxury 70 foot carbon yacht.

Light-weight Construction

By using carbon fiber and lightweight construction material in the interior, we achieve a high sail area/displacement ratio.

Variable Layout

Due to the modular construction, the layout can be adapted to the wishes of the owner. Among other things, you can decide with our designers which wooden surface you desire.
