Safe and protected under a large bimini and sprayhood, the expansive cockpit has a multi-functional table that seats eight with ease, with drinks on hand from the convenient integrated refrigerator. The deck offers a wide choice of other entertaining spaces. The sunken foredeck tender-well transforms into a chillout zone, with bimini and entertainment system. Her wide beam aft provides more space for sunbathing and the large hydraulic bathing platform is the perfect space from which to enjoy watersport toys. It also doubles as a unique spot for alfresco dining.

The standard carbon rig with Park Avenue style boom is precision engineered for safety and durability. The single point mainsheet, with push button control through a captive reel winch, makes for easy trimming of the sails when sailing. The wider hydraulic systems for both sail-control and bow and stern thrusters make for both easy sail handling and effortless manoeuvring in tight spots. With a choice of fixed keel or centreboard option, you can explore the most inaccessible places in the world with confidence. And the 885GT variant, featuring lead T-keel and extensive rig specification upgrades, takes performance to another level.

THE GB85. GRAND BANKS ON A GRAND SCALE!

The GB85 is not simply a bigger Grand Banks. True, at 87 feet, this exquisite, long-distance cruiser is the largest yacht we’ve ever built. But her most impressive statistics are not to be found in her dimensions, but in the best-in-class figures we’re recording for her fuel efficiency and range. That’s where you will indeed find a big difference!

Thanks to the hydrodynamics of our proprietary V-Warp technology, the Grand Banks 85 uses half the fuel of other 85 footers as she requires half the horsepower to achieve the same speeds and performance.

Owners and their guests will travel further, faster and spend more time exploring their destination and less time at the fuel dock.

Needless to say, her interiors and amenities are everything you’d expect from a name that is synonymous with luxury and elegance. Her extended length and 22ft beam allow us to offer a wide range of configurations. Hull number 1 has three massive staterooms and separate crew quarters that can be used for children or additional guests.

ROBOT ARMS, CRAFTSMAN’S HANDS

Size was not our primary concern. You could sum up our approach as, ‘Better is Bigger’ and not the other way round. Quality and efficiency have always been our guiding principles.

The GB85 is essentially a man-made boat although robotics is playing an increasingly important role in our manufacturing process. Our 8-axis robots have enabled us to build the moulds for larger and more complex parts with greater accuracy and, in 2019, we won the award for ‘Innovation in a Production Process’ at the Boat Builder Awards.

But ultimately, the craftsmanship that has traditionally defined our brand rests in human hands and in the passion for perfection that motivates our team.

FROM THE BOTTOM UP

The GB85 is built using our proprietary V-Warp technology. Our unique hull form was designed by our CEO Mark Richards in partnership with his team of naval architects and was informed by data from NASA and the US Navy. This elongated version features our characteristically fine entry that flares amidships to roll the seas away from the yacht. In Mark’s words, “With this hull form, the longer the boat, the better she’ll run!”

The science bears him out. In tow tank testing at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania, the ’85 delivered extraordinary results. At 21 knots there was virtually no wake! To sum up Mark’s reaction, “Mate, most other vessels of this size would be towing a tidal wave!”

LIGHTER YET STRONGER

The hull employs vacuum-infused E-Glass with carbon fibre in the structural areas, cored with Corecell ® and Airex ® foam, stitched multi-axial fabric and 100% Vinylester resins. Everything else, the longitudinals, the transversals, the bulkheads, the entire deck and superstructure are formed from fully infused carbon fibre. As a result, these structures are lighter but stronger with a higher fibre-to-resin ratio and have enabled us to hit our target weight of 40.6 metric tons.

The practical value of this approach is clearly evident in the displacement figures. The GB85 has a half-load displacement of just over 126,000lbs, a remarkable achievement when you consider that rival boats of this size are routinely weighing in at over 150,000lbs!

Design and Engineering

From the renowned naval architects of Norman R Wright and Sons the hull is designed to be the most efficient and most beautiful semi-displacement hull on the water. 

Building on their experience we have made extensive use of Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD software to fine tune the hull design to ensure it is absolutely the most efficient it can be and have the best possible behavioural characteristics in all sea states.

Composite engineers have designed the optimum strength/weight ratio of the structure, so we retain the traditional robust construction you would expect from Fleming – but it is achieved with less weight and is all verified by DNV.

The hull design and engineering will result in the best fuel economy and range of any semi displacement boat in the world. 

The absolute highest specification of equipment available - as standard – installed the Fleming way, with redundancy and access for maintenance in mind.

Two versions

Open air – for those who prefer the wind in their hair, the traditional style Fleming open flybridge.

Enclosed – The pilothouse is moved to the upper deck where it is fully enclosed and still fully outfitted like a Fleming pilothouse should be. Down below more space is opened up for flexible dining and entertaining.

Style 

Exterior - The lines and the look are unmistakably classic Fleming. Furthermore the exterior details have been refined and simplified to create a cleaner look with flush and hidden hardware throughout.

The multihull pairs the same high-volume, tri-deck styling as the StellarCAT AL2503 platform but with an upgraded power option to satisfy the owner’s desire to get to offshore fishing grounds faster—and a reasonable amount of efficiency.

The twin Volvo IPS drives deliver a top speed of about 21 knots. Because the IPS system claims 35-percent more efficiency than traditional shafts, and catamarans are more efficient than monohulls, this super cat is designed to make better use of its 5,200 gallons of fuel capacity. A potential foiling solution could increase the boat’s top speed to 35 knots, though the company declined to specify any technical details.

Cool key features that have been disclosed include a mega-tuna tower—among the largest in terms of height-to-boat length ratio—and near water-level extended cockpits on each hull with fighting chairs. These pods are where the fishing action happens, and as such, have reinforced soles and opening hydraulic transom doors for when a catch needs to be boated.

One of the owner’s top mandates was stability in the ocean. The double-hulled catamaran design makes sense since it won’t heel like a monohull and is less prone to rock and roll at anchor. The wide beam also delivers exceptional interior space that is often a third larger than a monohull of the same length.

“His list also included fuel efficiency,” adds Holmes. That would help the 85-footer achieve a range of 2,400 miles nautical miles, so it can venture to fishing grounds as far from the U.S. mainland as Belize and Nova Scotia. The lightweight all-metal construction and flat surface planing hulls also add to the efficiency.”

“The owner has owned fiberglass boats before,” says Holmes, “but sees significant advantages with all-aluminum construction, mainly from a collision and fire-safety perspective, but also low maintenance, eco credentials, rigidity, shock absorption, and comfort under way.”

A longstanding desire among big-game fisherman to travel to fishing grounds 100-plus nautical miles offshore or deep into the Pacific has driven up the length and range of sportfishing vessels. Probably the most extreme example is Royal Huisman’s six-deck, 171-foot Project 406 , which is billed as the world’s largest sportfishing superyacht.

But it’s not more than size. The owners are tasking builders with levels of superyacht fit and finish that provides comfort after a day of fishing. The new Viking 90 is a good example of that.

Built in 2000, the 85 ft Yacht Contessa Cabo San Lucas had a complete overhaul in 2014, with a totally new interior. Contessa is the ideal Cabo yacht charter with plenty of luxurious space and comfort. Double stairs lead from the swim platform up to the large aft deck which is stunning for outside dining.

The salon has a large open living area, with plenty of seating for family and friends. Two crescent-shaped sofas look at each other made with fine white leather which offset the beautiful cherry wood interior and modern new carpet. After leaving the living area there is a U shaped dinette across from the formal dining area set for eight.

A new curved 55-inch screen HD TV has been added recently with satellite TV, so you catch up on all sporting events while you are out cruising. Satellite phone. New speakers throughout ensure your music sounds great. The galley is well stocked with stainless steel appliances, two convection ovens, dish-washer; two freezers. Aft on the lower deck are three staterooms all with their own bathrooms.

The master is full beam and has a queen bed, walk-in closet, and large shower. On the  85 ft Yacht Contessa – Cabo San Lucas the two forward staterooms have twin beds & and each has its own bathrooms with shower. The VIP is situated aft and is also full beam with a queen bed & own bathroom with shower. 

The 85 ft Yacht Contessa Cabo San Lucas large upper deck has plenty of shade and is accessed by twin curved stairs from the aft deck – this is the place where people naturally migrate to as it affords a nice breeze and place to settle in for the journey. There is also a comfortable sunbathing area on the bow.

The vessel has four stand up paddleboards, snorkel gear, and two double kayaks. Fishing aboard 85 ft Yacht Contessa Cabo San Lucas is great with fighting belts and harnesses and with her high gunwale making her ideal for this type of fishing, along with complete walk-around. Outriggers and a nice selection of tackle are aboard – ideal for light fishing.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.
