“april fool”.

Effect : Pleasure-Adventure

Type : Sailboat

Place : North America

Size : 5' 11"

Date : 1966

Builder/Location : Designed by Ed Mairs; Built by Phil Van Deventer

Museum Location : 37

Hugo Vihlen sailed from Casablanca to Florida in 1968, aboard this 6-foot sailboat.

“April Fool”, 1966 Designed by Ed Mairs Built by Phil Van Deventer, Coconut Grove, Florida 5 feet 11 inches long, 5 feet wide, 1,222 pounds Gift of Mr. Hugo S. Vihlen

Would You Cross the Atlantic Ocean in this Boat? That’s exactly what Hugo Vihlen did when he sailed from Casablanca to Florida in 1968, aboard this 6-foot sailboat. On his third attempt Vihlen sailed 4, 480 miles in 85 days, and established the record for the smallest yacht to cross the Atlantic Ocean — a feat that stood for 25 years (1968 – 1993). If you look into the cockpit, notice the seat belt. Can you imagine being belted into this boat during an Atlantic storm?

Excerpts from “April Fool or, How I sailed from Casablanca to Florida in a Six-Foot Boat”:   Casablanca, Morocco 30 March 1968 As I chugged through the harbor, the size of the place struck me for the first time. My boat was just a matchbox among the docked freighters. If I was concerned that my boat was so small in a harbor, how was I going to feel when she reached the middle of the Atlantic? At sea, I’d be like a grain of sand on the desert. 8 April 1968 – At sea Awful rough. Twenty-foot waves, and steep. Barometer is 29.65. Nine days out. 26 April 1968 – At sea I have been sailing four weeks today. I decided it was time for a haircut. I got out the clippers and went up on the bow leaning over the edge so the hair wouldn’t somehow get into the cabin. I took about 20 minutes and it wasn’t a bad job if I do say so myself. Then I hopped overboard after first making certain to attach myself to the boat by means of a line. My first bath in four weeks. 9 June 1968 – At sea Catastrophe. I ran out of toilet paper today. Thank God for Reader’s Digest. 21 June 1968 – Florida It was Friday night, and after 85 days at sea, I was home, and happy. Many times, while at sea, I had wondered how long it would take me to get used to sleeping in a bed again. I went to bed that night and slept straight through until the next morning. The voyage was over.

Yes, the 60.96m (200'0") April Fool was launched on that day, but rest assured this fabulous twin-screw megayacht is a very serious addition to the Feadship fleet. Commissioned by experienced owners who had decided the time was right to upgrade to the finest quality money can buy, they also ensured that April Fool maximized comfort levels, incorporating separate TV and dressing rooms on the main deck in addition to a dedicated stateroom. The main lounge has virtually full-length windows and double doors leading out to the aft deck, making for a very open feel as well as great views.

Dan loeb gets $7 million break on sandy weill yacht.

The 200-foot super yacht April Fool.

Dan Loeb has become a billionaire searching out value in financial markets. Now, he's applying the same skills with yacht buying.

Loeb—founder of the hedge fund Third Point—recently purchased a 200-foot yacht called "April Fool" for between $50 million and $52 million, according to people familiar with the sale. That marked a big discount from the most recent asking price of $59.6 million.

The vessel was sold by Sandy Weill, the former CEO and chairman of Citigroup .

"Dan got a very fair price," said someone familiar with the deal. "It's not a steal. But it's a great buy."

Elissa Doyle, a spokeswoman for Third Point, could not be reached for comment.

( Read More : Abramovich Birth Solves Yacht Berth Mystery )

April Fool is widely considered one of the top yachts ever built by Feadship, the famed Dutch shipyard. Launched in 2006, April Fool has a huge master stateroom, a Jacuzzi on the fourth-level sun deck, a sauna, and sprawling outdoor dining lounge.

The yacht first came onto the market in 2011 with a price of $69.5 million. But with a glut of yachts after the financial crisis, April Fool failed to sell. The price then dropped to $59 million last year.

While the exact sale price isn't known, people familiar with the deal say Loeb paid between $50 million and $52 million.

Sources say he has already been enjoying his new boat in the Bahamas.

( Read More : John Malone on Wealth, Death and Yachts )

The sale also marks the shift of one generation of finance titans to the next. Weill, who built Citigroup throughout the 1980s and 1990s, has largely withdrawn from the world of finance and is downsizing his life. In an interview last year , he said he was selling April Fool because his grandkids had grown up and weren't using it as much for family vacations.

In 2011, he sold his penthouse at the exclusive 15 Central Park West building for $88 million. Loeb also has an apartment in the building.

"I'm trying to simplify," Weill said in the interview. "I think simpler is better."

Loeb, on the other hand, seems to be embarking on his accumulation phase.

$10 million price drop on superyacht April Fool at Burgess and Merle Wood

Hot news of another large price cut from Burgess as they tell me of a $10 million drop on Feadship’s 60m motor yacht April Fool , a joint listing with Merle Wood & Associates.

She has recently emerged from winter maintenance at STP Shipyard, Palma, where she completed a full repaint from stem to stern. Having also completed her Lloyd's Class 5 year survey in 2011, this yacht is perfect for a new owner to step on board without needing to invest another cent.

April Fool has been run to the very highest standards with no expense spared, has had one meticulous owner since new, has never chartered and has seen very low levels of private use. Pedigree build and design and exceptional engineering combine with very spacious, sophisticated interiors and ample outdoor decks designed for maximum comfort. A host of features include a sauna and a gymnasium while practical design ensures guests can relax at leisure uninterrupted by the crew.

Built in 2006 by the Van Lent yard, April Fool was a winner at the 2007 World Superyacht Awards and is now down to $59,950,000.

Hugo Vihlen & the Voyage of the April Fool

Hugo Vihlen sailing April Fool

On April 1, often referred to as April Fool’s Day, it seems fitting to recount the voyage of Hugo Vihlen in his micro-yacht April Fool . In 1966, Hugo Vihlen sailed from Casablanca to Florida, aboard his 5’11” sailboat. In 84 days he sailed 4,100 miles and got within 6 miles of Miami, Florida before being stopped by contrary winds and current. He was finally picked up by the US Coast Guard.

The micro-yacht April Fool   now resides at the I nternational Small Craft Center at The Mariners’ Museum  in Newport News, VA.  Their web page features excerpts from Vihlen’s book, “ April Fool or, How I sailed from Casablanca to Florida in a Six-Foot Boat .”  My favorite is from June 9, 1968 after 71 days at sea:

“ Catastrophe. I ran out of toilet paper today. Thank God for Reader’s Digest .”

This log entry may point out an unexpecting shortcoming of ebooks on longer voyages.

Hugo Vihlen & the Voyage of the April Fool — 2 Comments

FATHER’S DAY – http://bills-log.blogspot.co.uk/2009/12/fathers-day.html

Yes, apparently April Fool was too big, so Vihlen sailed the other way across the Atlantic in Father’s Day, a boat 7″ shorter.

Undaunted – the 42-inch yacht still hoping to become the smallest boat ever to cross the Atlantic

Yachting World

  • May 19, 2017

Matt Kent, age 33, turned back just 24 hours into his first attempt to sail across the Atlantic aboard the "stern-faced" tub Undaunted. Ryan Langley takes a close-up look at this tiny little ocean-crossing capsule.

april fool yacht

Just 24 hours into his first attempt to sail solo across the Atlantic in Undaunted , his 42-inch yacht, Matt Kent had to turn back.

He set off from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on 6 April, but returned after concerns about his boat’s seaworthiness.

He explains: “I wasn’t really in too much danger, [but] there was a weak point in the boat that was concerning me. The emergency floatation system component that was on the rudder assembly was getting hammered so hard in these really close together waves. The float was getting jammed upwards so fast and so often the boat’s movement couldn’t keep up.

“It was the worst, most unpredictable and erratic conditions I have ever sailed in with that boat. When it started gusting 45 knots I decided that I shouldn’t keep going with such an obvious weak link.”

Kent estimated his crossing time at some three months, so Undaunted cannot be fixed in time to avoid the hurricane season this year. He therefore plans to postpone his next attempt until the autumn.

He still hopes to set a record for the smallest boat ever to cross the Atlantic. “Both of the guys that held this record had to wait months or even years as setbacks took their toll.”

Where it all began for Undaunted

Skipper Matt Kent was working on a 200ft tall ship when he pondered what the smallest boat ever to sail around the world had been. On discovering that a 5ft 4in yacht had crossed the Atlantic, a seed was sown which resulted in the custom-designed Undaunted.

In 1965 Robert Manry sailed his 13ft 6in Tinkerbelle from Massachusetts to England (see video clip below), and the modern ‘microyacht’ trend was born. Tinkerbelle was followed by the 12ft Nonoalca and 8ft Bathtub across the Atlantic.

By 1968 Hugo Vilhen had made the smallest ocean crossing yet, sailing his 6ft April Fool from Casablanca to Miami. Vilhen went on to cross the Atlantic in his 5ft 4in Father’s Day , while in 2002, Tom McNally attempted, but failed, to cross the Atlantic in the absurdly tiny 3ft 11in Vera Hugh II .

Now Matt Kent, a 33-year-old professional tall ship sailor originally from Oregon, is preparing to cross the Atlantic Ocean aboard his three-and-a-half foot aluminium microyacht Undaunted . He expects the 4,700 nautical mile voyage to Florida, to take four months.

“ Undaunted is 42in long and 42in wide with a 5ft draught, 700lb lead ballast and a 40-gallon emergency water tank slung off the bottom of the keel,” explains Kent.

“Undaunted is designed to pitch rather than roll. That is counter to most boat designs. With better roll stability it will slip off the wind less as it leans forward. If it was more inclined to roll it would move forward and spill the wind from side to side, and be less efficient with more movement.

“Large twin rudders for low-speed efficiency and redundancy also help straighten the boat’s movement, along with a full keel.”

A test sail on Lake Erie demonstrated the unique handling of the boat Kent calls ‘a grumpy little man’.

“He sails downwind like a champ, self-tending downwind by sail angle alone due to the high mast being all the way forward. With a hull speed of just 2.5 knots he is not quick but he is stable and his square dimensions means he is affected by waves from any angle the same.

“He just bobs up and down. With a balance point about 16in above the keel and a 5ft draught he has a stability profile most designers would kill for.

“ Undaunted is a terrible boat, but he is a great storm shelter. A sailing capsule ready for the worst and also able to do the easy part, sailing in a straight line.

“We couldn’t make it go any faster, we couldn’t make it longer for the record. So we focused on safety and stability and through that our stern-faced grumpy little man was born.”

The emergency flotation system can be inflated three times using onboard CO2 canisters, or hand-inflated. Kent has calculated that one tube can support the entire boat, while three can lift the hatch out of the sea even with the boat full of water.

Capsule living

“Sailing it is quite simple, living on it is harder,” Kent comments. He cannot lie fully flat on board. “The boat is designed around my dimensions.

april fool yacht

“We have enough space for me to sit upright, and lay my neck and spine out to decompress on the diagonal. The hatch I stand up in is just above my hip bones to prevent me from getting flipped out of the boat, though I will have a harness and tether on all the time.”

The boat is painted white to reflect heat and fully insulated above the waterline, Kent explains. “Below the waterline was left bare so the conductive nature of the aluminium hull will create a cold pocket for me to be in. For ventilation my dorade is at the top of the mast along with my running lights, AIS antenna, and radar reflector.

“However, if I have to keep the hatch shut, I have a neoprene mask with two one-way valves in it. One breathes in from the cabin down the mast and the other breathes out into a flexible hose attached to the inner tube going back out of the mast.”

‘Did you sail that thing here?’ – solo across the Atlantic in a Folkboat

It’s a funny thing, the further I sailed away from northern Europe, the more attention my boat attracted in marinas…

Provisions are stowed under Kent’s feet. “I have enough food – half freeze-dried – for six months at 1,500 calories a day. I have intentionally put on 20 extra pounds for the trip as well.

“My diet consists of nuts, dried fruit, protein powder, nutrition bars, a variety of soups, stews, pasta, peanut butter, Nutella and so on. I have a huge variety as well as 64,000 extra calories in the form of two gallons of olive oil to add to my food.

“None of my food needs cooking but I do have a 12V/120W heat coil wand to heat water for dinner or tea or coffee, if I can afford the power. With a two-minute boil time I should be able to use it often. All of this fits in the bilge and down the keel.”

april fool yacht

Rather than carry a liferaft, Undaunted has its own emergency flotation system. “I had a white-water raft company make three inflatable tubes that will be rolled up and attached to the port, starboard, and bow of my boat. If I get swamped, holed or have an emergency I can turn a valve from inside the boat to have CO2 fill the tubes and float the boat until I fix it, or pump out,” explains Kent.

Undaunted has no engine, so the watermaker and battery charger will be operated by hand and foot pumps.

“I have two 1.2-gallon manual reverse-osmosis desalinators. One would be more than enough, but water is nothing to mess with.

“I will also have one month’s worth of water on board and one month of food that doesn’t need to be rehydrated if the watermakers fail or if I am injured and can’t pump. Making water and electricity will be part of my daily exercise.

“Also I will be able to swim behind the boat with a dual tether and harness system.”

The keel fresh water tank is divided into four ten-gallon compartments to avoid loss of stability in the event that Kent uses the water. Each can then be separately refilled with seawater.

Permission to land

When Vilhen crossed the Atlantic in 1993 in his 5ft 4in Father’s Day , his original plans were thwarted by the US Coast Guard and he eventually departed from Canada. Kent says this was one of the drivers in choosing a west-about route.

“Not only is the thought of coming home better than showing up someplace else after a long voyage alone, but it means that by the time I am in US waters I will have just crossed 4,600 miles of open ocean.

“If I can, I will pull into port, raise my Q flag and wait for Customs there. If I am near shore and I become too much of a traffic hazard, we will have a small boat come retrieve me.

“We are trying to make sure we don’t get in the way of other people’s livelihood or put anyone at risk with a needless rescue operation.”

His safety equipment includes AIS and an EPIRB.

“I have a satellite phone and a shore support team watching weather and my progress, giving me daily weather reports and receiving my location and status updates directly. I will also be tracked by my AIS system.

“I have a standalone GPS, GPS on my radio, GPS on my sat phone and on my smartphone and chartplotter, as well as redundant clocks and a sextant, and paper charts of the Caribbean and mid-North Atlantic.”

Kent says he is unconcerned about the psychological challenge of living in such a small space for four months.

“I have spent weeks alone in the Guatemalan Highlands, and lived alone in the woods for years. I have never been so alone or for so long, but few have.

“With plenty of digital media, books, daily check-ins and phone calls on the sat phone I will hardly be alone. Meditation has been a big part of my life, so the loneliness of the trip is not my biggest concern.”

Specifications

Length: 1m (42in) Draught: 1.5m (60in) Weight: 544kg unladen (1,200lb), or 816kg laden (1,800lb) Hull Speed: 2.5 knots Sail area: 49.5sq ft  (square sail) plus 27sq ft (rafee)

Undaunted has a modified square rig. “I have three identical yards and two sails, one square and one rafee [triangular topsail set above] a lower yard. One will be inside the cabin while the other is set.”

The boat has two watertight hatches: a small one set into the large one. The large hatch opens and locks over the back of the boat to act as a work table and guard against getting pooped. The small hatch has a lookout dome and is just big enough to allow Kent to get in and out.

april fool yacht

Two 16-gallon polyethylene tanks or ‘saddle-bags’ are lashed to either side of the boat under a 4in port. They will hold lighter supplies like clothes and extra line, says Kent. “They are also reserve flotation in the event of flooding.”

april fool yacht

The rudders are attached to the transom by two 4in piano hinges. Attached to that rack is a third tiller that travels through the transom inside a rubber boot to keep it watertight for steering from inside the vessel. There is no autopilot or wind vane self-steering.

Two roll-up solar panels can be deployed or stored down below.

The keel incorporates a 40-gallon water tank.

Shoalwater Bay Yacht Club? APRIL FOOL!!

A bit of April Fool’s history?

Perhaps you have seen the sign on the west side of the Taylor Hotel that identifies it as the Shoalwater Bay Yacht Club.  Or perhaps you have visited the Shoalwater Bay Yacht Club website which says, among other things:  Established 1877. Rejuvenated 2023.  We are a yacht club that is open to the public!

Wow!  And right in the heart of Ocean Park, too.  Not really within sight of Shoalwater Bay, though.  And, says the logo, it was “established in 1877” at the Taylor Hotel which wasn’t built until 1886.  And it was in Ocean Park which didn’t exist even as a Methodist Campground until 1883.  I am so confused.

To convolute matters even further — there really was a Shoalwater Bay Yacht Club established “in the early ’70s… (1870s that is) with headquarters at Oysterville.”   And the annual regattas that have been held in Oysterville for the past twenty years were established by Oysterville residents with deep roots here to honor those early Shoalwater Bay Yacht Club regattas.  I doubt if it has ever occurred to any of them to consider a Headquarters in Ocean Park.

Oyster boats called plungers were used in the first regattas in the early 1870s.

Did “headquarters” in Oysterville in the early 1870s mean that they had a building?  So far, there is no evidence to substantiate that idea.  And, Ocean Park is not mentioned at all in the Regattas’ historic record.  Oh!  Wait!  There was no Ocean Park in the early 1870s.

Interesting that it was all brought to my attention today.  Does that mean someone will soon say “April Fool!” and it will go away?  Or is it more like convoluting history — one of those “George Washington Slept Here” sorts of promotional deals?  (When I was a kid, every hotel on the Eastern Seaboard seemed to sport one of those signs.  I wonder if it really did help the bottom line of those establishments.)

Well, to those of us trying to shed a little light on our actual (and truly amazing) history, this convoluted version of a small piece of it seems really weird — at least to me.

Beloved Cuz! You Go Girl! The Nerve! The Very Idea! Sheesh. I am so disappointed in the establishment that hacked together this slur on the original Oysterville Yacht Club! I hope you will publish this heresy in the Chinook Observer…other old time peninsulites will agree fully and completely. I am hot and bothered and salute you, Sydney, for your forthrightness, accuracy and Excellent Reportage. Get ’em!!! Love, KK

Beloved Kris, Interestingly, only you and Cousin Ralph have responded with any outrage at all. Ralph’s take was that this is concrete proof (along with the “elite” garden tour last year) that the Peninsula is being gentrified… He’s probably right. I have more thoughts on that subject but will save them until we can have a proper in-person-rant! Love, S.

When is April Fool's Day? The upcoming holiday is celebrated worldwide, with jokes and pranks

april fool yacht

April Fool's Day is approaching and is known as a lighthearted holiday in the U.S.

Filled with pranks and jokes, it's the perfect time to get silly with friends and family. Not to mention pull off some pretty epic stunts.

While chaotic, April 1 is a favorite for many Americans, providing the childish fun absent from most days. The holiday, igniting the inner child of those of all ages, is filled with laughs, smiles, good memories and more. W

We're not the only country that celebrates it. While everyone's April 1 traditions vary slightly, the basis is the same, with tricksters and pranksters bound to be scheming globally.

Here's what we know about April Fool's Day 2024:

When is April Fool's Day 2024?

April Fool's Day is on Monday, April 1, 2024, according to Time and Date.

What is April Fool's Day 2024?

April Fool's Day is celebrated across the globe and centered on jokes and pranks. There are many theories of why the recognized day falls in April, like the introduction of the Gregorian calendar. Others include biblical references to Noah, of the famous tale Noah's Arc, and historical references.

It's believed to date back to Ancient Roman times, as they celebrated a festival of jokes around the time of the spring equinox. British folklore also links April Fool's Day to the 13th century.

Origin of April Fools Day: How it Started

April Fool's Day can be traced back to Ancient Roman times, though it wasn't officially known as April Fool's back then. Ancient Romans and Celts celebrated a festival of practical jokes and pranks around the time of the March equinox.

April Fool's Day 2024 in Japan

In Japan, April Fool's Day has been celebrated since the early 20th century, according to Yamamori. It's called "April Kanashimi no Hi," meaning "April Sorrow Day." However, the name is slightly misleading, as the holiday is celebrated with pranks and jokes, similar to the Western tradition.

Many people in Japan celebrate the holiday and play tricks on friends and family. "Popular pranks include setting up fake spider webs, filling shoes with flour or salt, and pretending to be someone else on the phone," according to the website.

April Fool's Day 2024 in France

In France, April Fool's Day dates back to 1564, and is recognizable for the unique tradition of "poisson d' avril," meaning "April Fish," according to French Moments . It's common for pranksters to tape a paper fish to someone's back without them realizing, or shout "poisson d' avril" while fleeing the scene of the prank.

Media outlets, businesses and the government often partake in the pranks as well, typically releasing information the day of and revealing if it's true or not the next day.

The holiday originated around the time of a major change to the French calendar. The New Year used to be celebrated on April 1, but King Charles IX switched it to Jan. 1 in his proclamation of Paris in 1563. It's said some weren't thrilled about the change and continued to celebrate the New Year in April, and those who adopted the change began to play pranks on those who wouldn't.

April Fool's Day 2024 in Brazil

In Brazil, April 1 is known as "Dia das Mentiras," meaning "Day of Lies," or "Dia dos Bobos," meaning "Day of Fools," according to Brown & Hudson. The celebration became popular after A Mentira, a periodical, published its first-ever headline, a satirical one, on April 1st, 1828, announcing the death of Don Pedro, Emperor of Brazil.

April Fool's Day 2024 in Scotland

In Scotland, April Fool's Day, also known as "April Gowk," "Gowkie Day" or "Hunt the Gowk," is a two-day festival. A "gowk" is a type of bird and slang for "fool." On the first day, Scotts look for victims to their practical jokes, and if you manage to get out unscathed on day one, you probably won't be so lucky on day two.

The second day of the Scottish custom, on April 2, is for pranks involving the posterior region of the body, according to the Scottish Country Dance of the Day . Known as "Taily Day," the infamous "Kick Me" sign likely originated here. The same custom occurs in the Orkney Isles, just off the Scottish Mainland, where it's known as "Tailing Day."

When is April Fools' Day celebrated? Here's why the holiday always falls on the same date.

april fool yacht

You may enjoy a joke or prank, but there's one that stands out as the day for pranksters. April Fools' Day has been a tradition for centuries, giving people a pass to play tricks on each other.

Whether you're freezing the water in the fridge's dispenser or hiding something savory in a sweet treat, the holiday allows for lighthearted and playful fun. Even companies and brands sometimes take part in the antics.

But how did April Fools' Day get its date?

When is April Fools' Day?

Every year, April Fools' Day falls on April 1.

This year, April Fools' will be on a Monday.

Why does April Fools' Day fall on April 1?

Many historians believe France is responsible for the holiday's date, the History Channel and the Library of Congress report.

There are several stories for the inception of April Fools' Day, according to the Library of Congress. One version is the holiday derives from a shift in France's calendar. In 1582, France implemented the Gregorian calendar. The country previously used the Julian calendar until the Council of Trent called for a change in 1563 , according to the History Channel.

Per the Julian calendar, each year began on the spring equinox, which usually fell around April 1 . Under the Gregorian Calendar, however, the new year started on January 1 .

In France, many were unaware of the calendar change and continued to celebrate the new year during the last week of March through April 1. These people were considered the " butt of jokes and hoaxes " and were named "April fools," according to the History Channel.

Has Easter ever landed on April 1?

This year, Easter and April Fools' Day fall on back-to-back days, with the former holiday on March 31.

Easter is observed on the first Sunday following the first full moon on or after  the spring equinox . Since Western Christianity uses the Gregorian calendar, Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 , the History Channel reports.

The two holidays have taken place on the same date several times, according to the U.S. Census Bureau . In the last century, Easter and April Fools' Day both landed on April 1 during 1923, 1934, 1945, 1956 and 2018 .

The next year this will happen is 2029 .

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

Moscow court rejects Girkin's appeal against arrest

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The Moscow City Court rejected the appeal of Russian warlord Igor Girkin , who has been arrested on charges of extremism, the Interfax news agency reported on Aug. 29.

"The decision of the Meshchansky Court in Moscow from July 21, 2023, on preventive measures in the form of detention against Girkin for a period until Sep. 18, 2023, is left unchanged, the appeal is rejected," the court decreed.

The lawyers of the Russian militant, who is also known under the alias Strelkov, asked the court of a higher instance to overturn the decision of the Meshchansky court and choose milder restraint measures.

Girkin's legal representatives argued with the suspect's allegedly poor health and noted that he is a recipient of various awards. The lawyers also pointed out that he actively cooperated with the authorities during the investigation.

The arrestee himself reminded that he is unlikely to run abroad due to his conviction by a court in The Hague, and insisted on his innocence regarding the extremism charges opened against him in Russia.

Girkin is a former officer of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) who played a major role in the Russian aggression against Ukraine's Donbas region in 2014.

In April of that year, he organized the seizure of the town of Sloviansk, Donetsk Oblast, initiating Russia's war in the Donbas. Girkin admitted later in an interview that he had "pulled the trigger" of Russia's war.

He also proclaimed himself the "defense minister" of Russia's proxy forces in Donetsk Oblast.

Girkin has been found guilty by The Hague court of participating in the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, which killed 298 people in 2014.

During the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he has often lambasted the Kremlin for mishandling the war effort. Girkin co-founded the Club of Angry Patriots, a hardline nationalist movement pushing for more extreme measures to achieve victory over Ukraine.

He was arrested on extremism charges on July 21 in a sign of the Kremlin's crackdown against the pro-war opposition in Russia. Girkin is being held in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center in Moscow.
