Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Single handed dinghy w/trapeze. Originally presented at a set of trails for selection of a new single handed dinghy class, sponsored by the IYRU and held at La Baule (FRA) in 1966. (A similar event held the previous year at Weymouth proved inconclusive) An International class since 1968.

The desire to have the best range of single-handed boats in the Hartley stable came true when we were offered the build rights, moulds, tooling and patterns for the Contender.

We were disappointed that unlike other classes we could not buy the copyright and be fully in charge over future policy and the destination for the Contender.  With other Contender builders throughout the World, would we be able to sell our boats and compete?

We were happy with selling the boat into the UK market but the challenge to allow the Contender sailors to choose the boat of their choice gave us a challenge. In a very short time, we agreed a deal. Just to have an already fantastic range of single-hander boats, the Byte, Supernova, Blaze and now the World’s best single-hander trapeze boat, the Contender, would make the whole team very proud.

We decided not to compete but to design and build the World’s best Contender that sailors would want to buy if they wanted to win championships.  To achieve this goal, we would need two important commodities.  The first, no budget set for the boat cost and whatever we have to spend, we would spend it. The second, a Naval Architect that is good enough to design, oversee the patterns, moulds and tooling being built, then organise the boat build procedures to ensure the boat reaches its potential, ensuring the quality and durability of the boat is to Hartley Boats standard and reputation.

Fortunately, Peter Hobson one of the best Naval Architects jumped at the opportunity and was 100% convinced he could not only design and build a great Contender but a boat that could win the World Championship, provided he had the budget and the boat was being sailed by a capable experienced helm.  Hartley Boats from the start of the campaign believed the only way to achieve our goal was that the Contender we build must have benefits over any other Contender manufacturer. The Hartley Boats team made it clear to Peter that whatever time it took, we would only go ahead when we were convinced we have those benefits

After months of drawings, time and effort Peter presented his list of benefits and improvements to the Hartley Boats Team to get the final approval.  At that meeting we were surprised at the extensive list of benefits he could deliver for the Contender, the list is as follows:

  • Laser aligned pintle recess to guarantee centreboard and rudder alignment
  • Flush transom join
  • Built-in drain tube flaps
  • Re-designed transom tubes to improve drainage
  • Narrowed side decks and lower rear tank to make the boat float lower in capsize
  • Lower cockpit floor to increase room under the boom
  • Rounded side-tanks to make tacking more comfortable
  • Re-designed centreboard stirrups to give multiple pivot positions
  • Re-designed centreboard to allow centreboard to move 50mm further aft in the boat for improved balance and pointing
  • Redesigned shroud eye bolts to maximise squaring off the boom
  • Specially designed mast-step integral with control line
  • Raised foredeck to maximise room under the boom
  • Re-designed stem fitting to make stronger forestay take off
  • Fully moulded bulkhead to improve overall boat stiffness
  • Increased core thickness to improve boat stiffness
  • Re-designed dagger-board rudder stock
  • Completely maximised waterline length

Following twelve months of hard work, Peter with the Hartley’s Team had produced the first boat and after trials we were overjoyed with the results. With a strong order book and new customers feed-back and sailing results, we have clearly confirmed that this is a very special Contender and if sailed by the right helm can and will win the Worlds, it is just a matter of time.

For Hartley Boats, when we show our new Contender be it in the UK or at the Dusseldorf Boat Show, we are proud that the boat looks stylish, elegant and a boat you would want to sail, the customers reaction when they see the boat speaks for itself, we are very pleased we are a Contender builder.  Every new Contender has a measurement certificate and is complete and ready to sail.

When we sell a new boat Hartley Boats likes to complete a full boat handover to ensure that you fully understand how to rig your new boat but most importantly that you get the best from your new investment. We also tune your new Contender and go through the boat set up for a beat, reach and run.  This helps you achieve the best results when racing.

For our UK customers, we are able to deliver if required.  Overseas customers, we are able to ship anywhere in the World.  We not only obtain the best shipping costs, we load your boat in the container, prepare and secure your boat to ensure it arrives at its destination in the very same condition it left the UK.

Fishability Test: Contender 44FA

  • By Jim Hendricks
  • Updated: February 23, 2020

Contender 44FA running shot

Powered by triple (or even quad) Yamaha 425 outboards and equipped with a 575-gallon fuel capacity, the new 44-footer is perfect for lengthy runs, island hopping, and spending long weekends at your favorite fishing destination.

Hardcore anglers will be glad to know the 44FA offers a 300-gallon forward fish box, plus a pair of 100-gallon fish lockers under the aft deck. A 130-quart cooler resides under the foot of the forward-console lounge, and there are twin 55-gallon livewells on the transom. The test boat was optioned with an ice maker and insulated ice bin under the aft cockpit, supplied by the boat’s 100-gallon freshwater tank, ideal for icing down the catch during extended trips. The ice bin can be replaced by an 80-gallon livewell, if desired.

Coaming pads encircle the interior, and a recessed, anodized aluminum rail wraps around the bow for added safety. The cavernous anchor locker features an anchor roller and electric windlass to make anchoring easier, whether fishing a wreck or overnighting.

Contender 44FA forward seating

Our test boat came with plenty of rod holders, including eight in the backrest of the second-row seat, six across the back of the hardtop, eight on the gunwales, and one on the transom. In addition, horizontal racks hold three more sticks under the covering boards, on both sides of the cockpit. A tackle center abaft the second-row seating module afforded plenty of stowage for leader spools, terminal tackle, lures and rigging tools. A 240-quart Frigid Rigid cooler below slid out at the push of a button, while a handrail across the back of the module offered a convenient steadying hold in rough seas.

Contender 44FA second-row seating

From a distance, the 44FA looks like a large center-console boat, but once behind the helm, the perspective changes. A sliding pocket door occupies the portside helm, providing access to the step-down cabin without limiting space on the dash, which accommodates a pair of Garmin 24-inch multifunction displays, networked with a Garmin CHIRP sonar, xHD2 open-array radar and autopilot. A center control pod that houses the steering wheel, Helm Master throttle and shift control, joystick, two engine-monitoring displays and switch panel extends aft to meet the helmsman. And a wraparound polycarbonate windshield blocks the wind and spray.

A trio of Llebroc seats with flip-up bolsters, foldaway armrests and individual fold-down footrests offers comfortable helm seating. Nearly as comfy, the second-row contoured bench seat includes footrests for bracing in rough conditions and, like the helm seating, remains under the protection of the hardtop.

Contender 44FA cabin

The 44FA offers a true cabin, with 6 feet, 8 inches of headroom; queen-size V-berth; galley with sink and freshwater faucet, fridge/freezer and electric cooktop; plus an enclosed head with vanity, sink and faucet, electric marine toilet and stand-up shower. Although opening the Bowmar hatch above the V-berth helps cool the cabin, those who plan to overnight in tropical climes should consider the optional 12,000 Btu air-conditioning system, powered by the onboard 5 kW Westerbeke generator or with shore power at a marina.

For entertaining, a transom bench seat can be added. It’s simple to remove when fishing is the priority.

A transom door in the starboard quarter allows access to the integral motor bracket/swim platform, and comes in handy when hauling aboard a big swordfish or tuna.

Contender 44FA helm

The 44FA uses the same twin-step hull as the Contender 44ST but is about 900 pounds heavier by virtue of its cabin accommodations. Nevertheless, handling during our test proved superb, with the hull carving turns with the agility of a boat half its size. With six adults, 350 gallons of fuel, 100 gallons of fresh water and the livewells full, the triple Yamaha 425 XTOs with 23-by-16 1/8-inch three-blade stainless-steel props got the boat up on plane in 7 seconds, propelled us to 30 mph in 12 seconds, and reached a top speed of 65 mph at 5,500 rpm, where the outboards burned 112.5 gallons per hour for 0.58 mpg. Close-quarter maneuvers and docking were easy thanks to the Yamaha Helm Master joystick control on the test boat.

Contender has an enviable reputation for building durable, dry- and smooth-riding boats that exude fishability, and the 44FA certainly lives up to it, adding plush overnight accommodations to the equation.

Contender 35 ST: 2024 Boat Buyers Guide

  • December 26, 2023

To avid freediver and spearfisherman Joe Neber, boatbuilding seemed like a natural career path growing up in Miami. Entering that industry, he soon came to found his own company, Contender Boats, in 1984. Admittedly competitive by nature, he has constantly pushed the envelope in boat performance, quality, fishability and innovation.

Contender, based in Homestead, Florida, is a recognized leader in building semicustom sport-fishing boats, carefully engineered, meticulously handcrafted and unmistakably aimed toward fishing, even when seas get rough.

Today, Contender offers models from 24 to 44 feet, each ready for custom details, from engine power to electronics to upholstery, including teak packages, power-actuated hatches and coolers, livewells and rigging, and several forward and rear seating options.

Neber is also a supporter of the fishing community and a committed conservationist, as evidenced by his company’s 11th-annual donation of a boat (this year, the 2024 Contender 28T center-console) to benefit the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida, which undertakes projects such as habitat restorations, artificial reefs, shoreline stabilizations, and restocking of clams, oysters, redfish and sea trout.

Contender 35 ST

Contender proudly calls its 35 ST center-console fast, efficient, powerful and fishy.

Its patented dual-stepped hull boosts speed, fuel efficiency and handling. A single-level deck, massive fish and storage boxes, and a sea-taming ride make this a fisherman’s dream. Triple (or quad) engines and a 400-gallon fuel capacity make it a dream with far-ranging options. It speeds at 70-plus mph.

The 35 ST has Contender’s hand-laid fiberglass construction with multidirectional fabric and a foam-cored glass stringer; foam flotation, an integral dive platform, a full transom and swing-in transom door; and a self-bailing cockpit and a nonskid cockpit sole and deck. Movement is easy on both sides of the two-abreast console, which is lined with vertical rod holders.

A semicustom boat, the 35 ST has a long and wide list of available custom fishing options, including towers built to spot fish or birds from miles away. Complete second-station setups give the captain the true bird’s-eye view of air and ocean and their inhabitants.

A leaning station features a novel removable rigging table. The station is topped by a half-dozen rod holders, and the transom by a pair of 40-gallon clear-topped livewells. Another 80-gallon livewell can be installed in-deck aft of the leaning post as an option; each livewell is served by its own pump installed within a sea chest. Forward of the console, a lounge is lifted electrically to access a large central storage compartment flanked by two other in-deck compartments, besides the coffin box itself. Additional in-deck storage and fish boxes are available.

Editor’s Tip

Fuel capacity is often overlooked, but it’s as important as the boat’s motors. It doesn’t make sense to have a fast, capable vessel and limit its range with a tiny tank. If you plan on unleashing 1,200 ponies, make sure you can fit at least 300 gallons below deck. -Joe Albanese, Executive Editor Salt Water Sportsman

USCG suspends search for missing boater after crash with rig off Grand Isle coast

GRAND ISLE, La. (WVUE) - The search for a missing boater has been suspended by the United States Coast Guard after a vessel crashed into a rig off the coast of Grand Isle.

The United States Coast Guard says they received an urgent alert Tuesday from the boat Linedout, indicating that they were taking on water near ship shoal 87 with two individuals aboard and a third man overboard.

The USCG sent out a helicopter aircrew and a 45-foot response boat to rescue the two onboard and begin searching for the third.

The lift boat Gloria also responded and was able to retrieve the two injured boaters.

The chopper crew saw no visual trace of the missing man but were able to airlift the two injured individuals from the Gloria and take them to a hospital in New Orleans. Both men were conscious and responsive.

Search efforts continued until Thursday around 1:20 p.m.

The rigging is sufficient, but not artwork. The bilge is roomy, but very complex. Tons of plumbing and lots of through hulls.
