Jamaica is the third largest of the Caribbean islands, and the largest English-speaking island in the region. Although our island is considered “small” by some standards – 4,244 square miles (10,991sq km) in size – there are numerous activities that visitors can enjoy once you get into port. 

Jamaica is chiefly a limestone island; the topography cruisers are often surprised about is the hills which almost touch the white-sand beaches. The island’s tropical climate is cooled by the north-east trade winds. Experienced navigators indicate that the island’s waters are fairly deep and can accommodate large vessels. The northern coast is the preferred point of entry as the southern coast has more reefs and requires careful attention. 

The island’s waters and cays are patrolled by the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard. Their grey vessels will have the appropriate white markings and the Jamaican flag is flown. The Coast Guard advises that entry to the island be made at Kingston, Montego Bay, or Port Antonio where immigration, customs and quarantine services are available. All arriving vessels and crew are expected to complete these inspections before moving to other parts of, or landing on the island.

Customs:  Jamaica Customs requires that each vessel provides a full crew list and documents relating to the vessel’s registration and cargo. A Customs Officer will board the vessel for inspection and indicate when pratique (clearance) has been granted.

Immigration:  The Passport Immigration & Citizenship Agency (PICA) will require the crew list and passports (with proof of visas where applicable) for each vessel. The Immigration Officer will indicate the period of stay for which each traveler is allowed. Extensions of stay may be sought through PICA.

The Port Authority The Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) manages the island’s ports as well as the lighthouses and beacons.  The PAJ through its Cruise & Marina division maintains the port infrastructure and assists cruise ships and yachts with the use of the facilities.

Ports & Marinas The island of Jamaica is blessed with several deep-water ports, which provide the mariner with access to the island’s north and south coasts. Mariners are advised to enter at the Royal Jamaica Yacht Club in Kingston, The Montego Bay Yacht Club in Montego Bay, or the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio. At these docks, immigration and customs services, adequate facilities for mooring/docking, refueling and supplies, as well as security are in place, or are easily arranged. Some of these ports have repair facilities with lifts, and can make arrangements for specialized marine services as needed.

Royal Jamaica Yacht Club, Kingston  The Port of Kingston boasts the 7th largest natural harbor in the world and is home to the island’s largest port facilities as well as being one of the main transshipment points in the Caribbean region. The Royal Jamaica Yacht Club has been in existence for over a century. It received its Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1889. Located in Kingston, it is the marina of choice on Jamaica’s southern coast, particularly for pleasure boats arriving from South America and the wider Caribbean. The marina can accommodate boats up to 50ft. in length.

Kingston is the cultural capital of the island; it is home to Jamaica’s essence – music, entertainment, academia, business and gastronomy. The city is a bevy of restaurants and cafés, music studios and theatres, with galleries and museums sprinkled between. Be sure to check out a local reggae show; visit Port Royal, Devon House, the Bob Marley Museum, Hope Gardens and other great sites in and around Kingston. Montego Bay Yacht Club Montego Bay is well known for its white sand beaches, extensive golf courses, tours and activities appealing to visitors, and is dotted by several resorts and hotels. The “tourism hub” of the island, Montego Bay is called the centerpiece of Jamaica.  Montego Bay’s expansive, award-winning port allows for easy access to the many attractions and activities of the resort area. The Montego Bay Yacht Club is nestled to the western end of the Port of Montego Bay, and is in close proximity. Errol Flynn Marina, Port Antonio The Port of Port Antonio is known for its picturesque twin harbours. It is home to three docks – the Errol Flynn Marina, the Old Marina and Bowden Wharf. The Old Marina and Bowden Wharf formed the hub from which the area’s green gold – bananas – was shipped. Bowden Wharf is the starting point for the region’s longest running sport-fishing event – the Port Antonio Marlin Tournament. The Errol Flynn Marina –the island’s newest port – named after the swashbuckling actor, welcomes boutique cruise vessels and yachts. 

Port Antonio is the smallest of the major ports and ideal for yachts. The full-service port sports landscaped gardens and a promenade with views of the lush countryside and the majestic Blue Mountains. The Errol Flynn Marina is the main landing facility for visiting vessels to the port of Port Antonio. From this port it is easy to go Rafting on the Rio Grande, explore Somerset Falls, Charles Town Maroon Village and Reach Falls.

Jamaica luxury yacht charter

Jamaica is a fantastic superyacht charter destination thanks to its 350 miles of coastline and is an increasingly popular Caribbean destination.

While there are several marinas, only three are recommended as being fully secure – Port Antonio, the Montego Bay Yacht Club and Royal Jamaica Yacht Club.

Anchoring anywhere in Jamaica should be easy thanks to the sea-bottom which is usually turtle grass and sand. The different parts of Jamaica are all beautiful in their own right, with Montego Bay – nicknamed the ‘Hip Strip’ – probably the most well-known thanks to its abundance of luxury resorts.

The other areas shouldn’t be neglected though: Kingston may have a bad reputation for crime but it’s still the home of grand architecture and Jamaica’s government, while Ocho Rios is absolutely stunning thanks to its natural waterfalls, rivers and beaches.

For those not content to relax on the glorious beaches, an abundance of tropical fish, bright coral and warm, clear waters make the scuba diving in Jamaica really excellent. The reefs in Negril Marine Park, the Throne Room and Sharks Reef all come recommended, as do the man-made sunken ship reef in Ocho Rios and the famous Widowmaker’s Cave. The Montego Bay Marine Park was created in 1990 to help protect treasures such as these.

Jamaica hasn’t had a peaceful history, and it wasn’t until the 1834 Emancipation Act, made after several slave revolts, that things began to slowly change. The result of so many colonists and immigrants is an incredibly rich culture and vibrant people, with the language and cuisine a spicy mix of many different ethnicities.

The staff was amazing and very tentative. Allen, Jeffery, Desmond and Captain Allen were nothing short of amazing. They kept the drinks flowing and the music going! They catered to our party of 11 every needs. The yacht is big and spacious. I highly recommend this company. They made sure we were comfortable and SAFE! They also decorated for our board provided food and cake!

Detrick, was professional, accommodating, and timely. The staff aboard the vessel was wonderful. The service, food, and drinks was A1. The internet and sound system was great. We were able to enjoy our playlist the entire time. The vessel was clean and smelled nice too. They had my picture on the tv monitor. The transportation was also decorated with balloons and my name on the tv monitors. The attention to detail was great and I appreciated all of it. They staff went above and beyond to make my day special. They arranged to have me a cake made. The price was good, the cake was decorated s I requested and it taste good too. You should definitely book with knot Stressin you will be glad you did. Thanks for making my 50th birthday spectacular.

***BEST PART OF OUR VACATION!! ***. I cannot say enough about how wonderful our expertise was with Detrick and the crew on this stunning 3+ hour cruise though the crystalline waters of Montego Bay and the reef. My husband and I were looking for a relaxing way to spend some time on the water, enjoying the beauty of the reef, warm sea breezes on our skin, and visual delight of the sun painting a rainbow of colors on the sky as it set just north of the horizon where the Jamaican mountains touched the Caribbean Sea. Jeffrey (aka Teddybear?) , Mieka (aka “Smiley”) our crew made that happen for us. Detrick was happy to create a custom itinerary for us. He is a great communicator! Desmond picked us up at our hotel at 3pm (very punctual). We left the pier at 3:30. They took us to the reef wherein we spent awhile snorkeling (with nice gear)- with Jeffrey leading the way. They offered that we could lay out in the sun in some floats they had but when we expressed more interest in seeing the coastline and learning about the area they were happy to adapt. Jeffrey was a former dive boat captain and incredibly skilled at navigating the clear Caribbean waters. You could see the bottom for much of the trip which was super cool. Watching the sunset with smooth music in the background, a RedStripe on one hand and one another in the other hand was a memory I’ll never forget. Just go ahead and book now. You won’t regret it. (Btw I rarely post reviews. This is one of the few).

This is the BEST private boat service you will find in Montego Bay. My line sisters celebrated our 5th year anniversary and were welcomed with our sorority logo, pink/green decorations and even surprised with a cake. The boat was very clean and well kept. From the hotel pick up to the car service, Deidrick and staff truly made my friends and I feel like queens. Definitely worth every penny, as you will not find any better service. Deidrick and staff were very trustworthy and reliable. Deidrick was also very communicative and accommodating throughout my entire booking process. We felt safe and well taken care of the entire time. They provided food, adult beverages and a bottle of our choice. When I come back, I’ll definitely be booking them and them only!

The Mimosa Yacht was the BEST yacht experience we’ve ever had! The crew was very accommodating and presented excellent customer service. The music, ambiance, and overall vibe was amazing. Ruby was an excellent host. Her attention to detail was outstanding from planning the food menu, coordinating decorations and photography, and her overall support and kindness.
