• wpcf_mainimg_description: MARAE, pronounced Mar-eye 108' Pilothouse Sloop, "Best Sailing Yacht", International Superyacht Design Award, 2004 The name Marae has origins from the native Maori tribe in New Zealand meaning a special meeting place for family and friends. With Marae's New Zealand construction by Alloy Yachts, the name is a natural fit. This elegant yacht must be seen to fully appreciate her but in the interim the following description must suffice. On deck Marae has a private aft cockpit with collapsible spray hood and direct access to the master stateroom. This cockpit area is equipped with large cushions for lounging. A fold out stern section provides comfortable steps and a sturdy swim platform. Moving forward are the port and starboard steering stations, followed by a covered center cockpit with U-shaped sofas to port and starboard and hi-lo table for dinner or cocktails. These areas can be converted to lounging pads. Side windows slide open and a removable aft Isenglass curtain protects against the elements. A protected helm station is located to starboard. Captive winches keep the teak decks free of clutter. The interior woodwork on MARAE consists of stained walnut and is complemented by luxurious fabrics and crisp white linens, down duvets and down pillows in the staterooms. The upper saloon has a full wet bar with stools and a leather U-shaped sofa with coffee table that converts into a comfortable lounging area with panoramic views. Main saloon with comfortable sofas, coffee table and dining table seating six is located below, galley and crew areas are forward of the saloon and guest accommodations aft of the saloon. The master stateroom is full width aft with private access to the aft deck. Centerline queen size bed, office and en suite bath room. Roomy stall shower with built in seat. Private staircase from the master stateroom to the aft cockpit. Double guest cabin with en suite bath room, stall shower and built in shower seat. Twin guest cabin with Pullman berth and en suite bath room and stall shower. <p align="center">Go to Friendly MARAE Website: <a target="_blank" Luxury Sailing Yacht MARAE charter brief: MARAE (32.9m / 108’), formerly Paraiso, is a custom-built luxury sailing sloop, launched by the New Zealand based Shipyard Alloy Yachts back in 2004. Most recently refitted in 2009 and 2014, she is primarily an elegant sailing yacht with friendly and experienced crew, which offers both luxury accommodation as well as stylish family sailing holidays and adventurous holiday experience. Designed by Ted Fontaine Design Group she combines traditional, classic design with modern facilities, clean lines and open deck spaces with two cockpit areas. MARAE features all the latest sailing gear, communications and entertainment systems on board and is always kept in excellent, yacht charter ready condition. MARAE's super yacht crew of up to four are usually offering luxury crewed charter itineraries around the New England and Maine regions of USA throughout the summer and the East CARIBBEAN during the season in the winter months. Tip: Super yacht MARAE has a flexible draught which can go down from her usual 7.5m draft, she can raise it to only 2.15m. This raising centre board enables the yacht to access shallower anchorages which many other yachts in this range may have to avoid.

Sailing Yachts - MARAE

About Luxury Sailing Yacht MARAE: MARAE is a luxury sailing yacht offered for yacht charters in the Mediterranean during summer months and the East Caribbean in the winter yacht charter season. This very elegant super sail yacht must be seen to fully appreciate her, and in terms of yacht charter she is a great value. Having won the ‘’Best Sailing Yacht’’ award at the International Superyacht Design Award in 2004 as the best 108’ Pilothouse Sloop, this MCA and Lloyds registered boat is a genuinely unique yacht charter proposition in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. The name Marae, pronounced as ‘Mar-eye’, has origins in the native New Zealand Maori tribe and it means a special meeting place for family and friends. As Alloy Yachts are New Zealand based shipyard, the name is a genuinely natural fit. One of the best features of the yacht is a private aft cockpit on deck, which has a collapsible sprayhood, providing direct access to the master suite down below. The cockpit area is equipped with large cushions for lounging and it can also comfortably seat all guests for lovely al-fresco meals and panoramic views of the surrounding coastline during any of your super yacht charter cruises and whatever yacht charter itinerary is chosen. At the stern, a fold-out section provides comfortable steps and a useful swim platform for easy access to the water. Moving forward from the stern are the port and starboard steering stations, followed by one of MARAE's best features - a deck salon with a U-shaped sofa to port, an L-shaped one to starboard and hi-lo table for meals and cocktails. Side windows slide open and a removable aft Isenglass curtain protects against the elements. Very useful captive winches keep MARAE's sweeping teak decks free of clutter, while the protected helm station is located to starboard. In the interior of MARAE, stained walnut woodwork used throughout is complemented by luxurious fabrics and crisp white bed linens, Down duvets and Down pillows in the staterooms. The upper saloon has a full wet bar with stools and a leather U-shaped sofa surrounding a coffee table that converts into a comfortable lounging area. The views from here also great, thus the area is the best alternative to the outside areas on deck. The main saloon has richly upholstered sofas with deep cushions, a coffee table and dining table with seating for six. About super yacht crew on board of SY MARAE: Captain Frank Ficken is a US captain and has extensive sailing experience in the Caribbean as well as the Mediterranean. He is very easy going and particularly happy to allow clients to help sail MARAE whenever this is possible or when the clients are keen to switch from enjoying their luxury yacht charter experience for an adventurous sailing. His wife Sue is chef on board and as Frank, she also worked on board large yachts before joining Marael. She is very flexible in her cooking style and likes to create unique, imaginative meals to suit different clients on board. Her desserts are a treat and her provisioning experience in all major yacht charter ports, second to none. Dyland and Renee complet the crew of four on board of this yacht, and both are experienced first mate sailors/engineer (Dyland) and Stewardess (Renee) who are on board of luxury yachts for a number of years now.

Accommodation: Luxury Sailing Yacht MARAE can accommodate up to 6+1 guests in 3 luxuriously appointed cabins. The guests will have a total of 2 double cabin and 1 twin cabins. The master stateroom is located aft and across full width of the yacht, with private access to the aft deck. The suite features centreline queen-size bed, office and en suite bath room. Roomy stall shower with built in seat and private staircase from the master stateroom lead to the aft cockpit. On top, the guests can enjoy a double guest cabin with en suite bath room, stall shower and built in shower seat and a twin guest cabin with Pullman berth and en suite bath room and stall shower. All cabins are en-suite and with their own individual air con and Stereo entertainment systems. Sailing Yacht MARAE charter prices: MARAE super yacht charter prices start at 49,000 US$'s per week per day in low season, while high season prices are as high as 54.000 US$'s per week plus APA expenses. By Oliver Pearson 12 August 2016

Currently available in New England , the award-winning 33m/108ft sailing yacht MARAE is currently offering a 20% rate reduction for charters taking place this Autumn.

Delivered from Alloy Yachts in 2004 and refit to exacting standards in 2014, MARAE has maintained her reputation as one of the finest sailing yachts available for charter.

The winner of the ‘Best Sail Yacht 23m-36m’ award at the International Superyacht Society Awards 2005, her dynamic layout and highly elegant interior ensure guests enjoy their vacation in only the most luxurious of settings.

Graced with an impressive seagoing performance and naval architecture, MARAE is not only aesthetically impressive, but also capable of accessing more bays and anchorages than other superyachts of her size- a worthy skill when it comes to cruising in New England.

With a generously proportioned master cabin as well as a single double and single twin, MARAE is capable of accommodating up to six guests whilst away on a private yacht charter .

The main salon of luxury sailing yacht MARAE

Combining style with performance, MARAE is unquestionably one of the most remarkable sailing yachts available for charter

With a number of harmonious communal spaces providing a range of options for those on board, the interior of sailing yacht MARAE is nothing short of exceptional.

Indeed, the walnut panelling which flanks both the main salon and formal dining area sets an inviting ambience, making both spaces ideally suited for entire parties to gather in.

What’s more, the voluminous upper salon features a full wet bar and provides access to uninterrupted ocean panoramas.

Consistent with such opulent styling, each of the spacious staterooms has been finished with rich wood panelling and includes en suite facilities.

Committed to providing the very best in outdoor luxury living, the exterior of MARAE is every bit as noteworthy as her interior.

Her cockpit, for example, features a collapsible spray hood to provide both protection and shading whenever necessary- a useful and considerate addition for those who prefer to dine alfresco.

The walkaround layout is also completely free of clutter, meaning charterers are able to properly appreciate the rolling landscapes found along her charter grounds.

Sure to keep more adventurous charterers satisfied, sailing yacht MARAE also comes with kayaks, paddleboards, and scuba gear.

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Kokomo,’ the Lightning-Fast 192-Foot Sailing Superyacht

The 192-footer has a 242-foot-high mast and spinnaker half the size of a football field. but it's so automated it can be sailed by two people., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Sailing Superyacht Kokomo

The 192-foot Kokomo was the second largest sloop in the world when it launched from New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts shipyard in 2010. It remains the largest fast-cruising sloop available for charter. The yacht’s commissioning owner Lang Walker (who died in January 2024) was a seasoned sailor who gave all three of his yachts the same name.

The first was a 131-foot sloop, which Walker replaced five years later with a 171-footer. The same day he took delivery of his 171-foot sloop, he placed an order for the third and final 192-foot Kokomo, which he planned to use for racing and cruising around the world. He also kept the same design team for all three yachts, with exterior and naval architecture by Ed Dubois and interior by UK’s RWD.

The reference to the yacht’s name has had different explanations over the years, ranging from the pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker played as a child to a nod to the Beach Boys’s song from their 1988 album Still Cruisin’ , which references a fictional utopian island called Kokomo. The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo .

Here are eight unknown facts about one of the most game-changing sailing yachts on the water.

You’re Going to Need a Bigger Boom

marae sailboat charter

When Kokomo was launched, she was the second-largest sloop in the world and carried the largest set of sails made by Doyle Sails in New Zealand. The 23,971-square-foot asymmetric spinnaker is half the size of a professional football field, while the 9,688-square-foot mainsail needs a crane to lift it. Because of the gargantuan size of the sails, the designers entered a new era of spar and winch design, having to “reinvent” the deck equipment—winches, mast, boom, rigging and sails—to cope with the 31.6-ton load on the genoa sheet and 32-ton load on the main sheet clew. The 244-foot carbon mast is the largest ever made by Southern Spars.

A Hidden Lifting Keel

marae sailboat charter

The yacht’s 130-ton lifting keel is one of its most impressive features, though it’s largely left to the imagination. The interior layout is carefully designed so that the keel structure remains hidden. Dubois Naval Architects positioned the keel box to come above the main deck, serving as a partial separation between the bridge and the main salon (see inset). Kokomo was only the second yacht to be fitted with a lifting a keel, the first being 246-foot M5 (ex-Mirabella V), the world’s largest single-masted sailing yacht. This innovative design shortens Kokomo’s 28.5-foot draft when the keel is fully extended, to just 15 feet for shallow waters.

Fast-Track Sailing

marae sailboat charter

Kokomo was one of the first yachts to be fitted with a hydraulic batt-car system for furling the mainsail, which has cars at each batten end that slot in an outer track on the mast. This alleviates a once-common issue where the luff tape or bolt rope on large sailing yachts became chaffed by the compression of the battens, which often caused the in-boom furling mainsails to fail. “When sailing Kokomo , especially when racing, I am completely impressed with the speed and efficiency of the hydraulic system,” says Kokomo ’s captain, Jeremy ‘Bear’ Wynne, who notes the yacht’s recorded top speed is a very impressive 22 knots. “The jib furlers are some of the fastest I have seen. There is absolutely no shortage of hydraulic power, even with multiple winches running on a jibe—a rarity on a big sailing yacht.”

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

marae sailboat charter

Kokomo might be big on technology, but never at the expense of design. The wheelhouse has fold-down computer screens that conceal the navigation equipment when not in use, converting to beautiful carbon counter tops. This design sleight of hand transforms a highly technical area into a tony lounge. It’s a theme that extends to the foredeck, where the yacht’s two tenders are concealed in dedicated lockers. There’s also a fully retractable tender crane that launches the tenders from either side of the boat but disappears out of sight when guests are using the Jacuzzi. “The designated deck lockers were an advanced feature at the time of her launch,” says Wynne, adding that another bonus is that diesel tanks are fully available. “The tenders can be fueled onboard before launching.”

It Takes Just A Few Good Sailors

marae sailboat charter

Kokomo can accommodate up to 10 crew in total, but theoretically it only takes two to sail—a helm person and a sail trimmer. That sounds almost impossible given the size and complexity of yacht. But all sails are controlled by joystick on the flybridge. And when the boat is in full-on racing mode, there are control stations on both sides, providing visibility of the sails. Thanks to the hydraulics system, the mainsail can be hoisted and lowered on a wireless remote control. Of course, maneuvers like stowing the massive genoa can never be automated. That’s a job for a half-dozen good sailors.

Art On Board

marae sailboat charter

The hallway that leads to the owner’s cabin is lined with a mosaic tapestry made from sea glass woven together with wire. Backlit to create an unusual effect, it’s just one of the eclectic works of art that decorates the interior. The main salon also has a stunning and colorful work of glass art as another example.

Interior Matters

marae sailboat charter

Kokomo is not all tech features. The yacht’s modern interiors combine dark wood floors and calming cream furnishings start in the main salon and continue across the five guest cabins. Penned by British studio Redman Whiteley Dixon, the design carefully wraps around the lifting keel without sacrificing or impeding on any interior guest space. The yacht accommodates up to 10 guests in a master suite, VIP, one double cabin and two twins. There are other accommodations for up to 10 crew. On the foredeck, the Jacuzzi brings another element of outdoor entertainment, bolstered by a sunken cockpit.

World Traveler

marae sailboat charter

The mandate issued by Walker was to create a yacht that was a “quantum leap forward” from his previous yachts, with superior sailing characteristics and guest comfort. The mast’s height is too tall to sail through the Panama or Suez Canals, which meant it would have to be designed to sail around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The maiden voyage took the yacht from the New Zealand shipyard to Australia, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. It also spent time at Walker’s private island (pictured above), also named Kokomo. The vessel has since spent many years exploring the Caribbean and Med. It’s based in both regions during the respective cruising seasons, with charters available through Cecil Wright.
