We are located at the southern end of beautiful Georgian Bay, with immediate access to best freshwater sailing in the world. The club provides great opportunities to enjoy Spectacular Cruising and Competetive Racing in a Friendly Community of Sailing Enthusiasts. Making a mistake on a tennis court may mean losing a ball, but at sea, when the wind and waves increase, you could put your life itself at risk. Going out to sea alone are essential to learning but only at a later time when the basics are now clear.

How to Recognize A Serious Sailing School?

We start from the assumption that there are no absolute methods to choose a good sailing course; even the advice of a dear friend could disappoint expectations. In the years that I have spent among the sailing schools, however, I have identified some points in common between the more serious ones, and I want to bring them back, as my personal advice to those who are looking for a quality sailing course.

More boats and equipment in good condition are the first indicators of quality; it generally means that the school has been organizing sailing courses for some time and that it (rightly) invests in the care of the boats. Just to give an (absolutely indicative) number, a good sailing school should have at least a dozen boats, perhaps of different types and in good condition. As for the cabin cruisers, the numbers change since the cost of every single boat is much higher; if well maintained, even a single boat will be sufficient.

The Instructors:

Existing patents for sailing instructors do not necessarily guarantee good teaching standard, but serious schools focus a lot on the training of their staff and on the teaching method. Often the instructor completes his training directly within the school: starting as a helper, he is gradually assigned more and more responsible tasks, up to taking care of the entire sailing course.

The Scurity:

Each school that organizes sailing courses must have the safety of its pupil as its central objective.

On the ground, there must be everything necessary for first medical assistance, even better if there is a lifeguard or another person capable of providing first aid.

It is always preferable that the instructor and a helper follow the trainees from an inflatable boat so that they can intervene quickly when a problem occurs. The instructor should always have a cell phone or a radio with him in order to ask for help, and it would be a good idea to have at least one contact person on the ground.

Life jackets are mandatory! Be wary of those who do not provide them and ask for it expressly. It may even be annoying to wear, but in that famous time, the jacket could save your life.

A good sailing school knows all this and will not allow you to go out to sea except in maximum safety.

In general, however, be wary of those who own a boat and improvise a sailing instructor to repay some expenses, contact a real school.

When choosing a sailing course, never lose sight of the goal: to learn and have fun in safety; if a course respects all three parameters, then you will not regret the choice!

This is a fabulous marina on Georgian Bay. It is conveniently located near Beausoleil, Frying Pan Bay, Beckwith, Christian and Hope Island. It is also near the 30,000 Islands, Trent Severn Waterway and the beautiful North Channel. It is a very well run, busy and friendly marina. They are always maintaining their equipment and even upgrading the facilities. The washrooms are kept very neat and clean. I don't mind using them at all or taking a shower there. The pool is also a nice feature, especially if you are feeling lazy and don't wanna go boating for the day, you can enjoy the pool instead.

October 20, 2017 launched our boat at Midland's Pete Peterson park. Sign says go to Bay Port marina to pay a nominal fee to park. Did that and a supervisor, we assume, was not only ill mannered but bad natured as he told us to park in an area where there was no room to drive around with a truck and trailer, when there was clearly lots of room elsewhere. Local residents can park free at the launch. Poor system, how about just some kind of parking metre. This is how Midland wants to treat it's visitors?

Great spot to have your boat! Close boat ride to Giant Toomb beach and Severn Canal.

I order parts from here as they are a yanmar AD. Staff was friendly and worked very hard to check for stock. Ordering was very easy.

They're doing their best to fit us in. Need tons of work done before we sail from Midland to Thunder Bay in late July. Will let you know how they do. Hopefully we're ready to safely sail Superior.

After the fire: St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club focused on revitalizing this coming summer

P ANAMA CITY — In November, the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cove Road was destroyed in a fire. Ever since then, questions have circulated around the community: How did the fire start? Would the Yacht Club rebuild?

The Yacht Club was up and operational for business within weeks of the fire. The Yacht Club is still taking in new members, as well. Members have joined the club even after the fire.

”The Yacht Club is in better shape than people would have imagined,” said Michael Wynn, 2024 commodore. “The staff members that we have are family to us. We believe and give to them and they give back to us.”

Wynn explained that one club member had this to say after the fire: “The clubhouse was just a building; the Yacht Club is about the people.”

The Yacht Club has discussed expanding its sailing center to provide greater resources for the community. The club expects the plans and renderings for the new club facility will be unveiled this summer.

Some of the staff members have left the club since the incident and others have stayed.

“Our staff is smaller now since the fire,” said Wynn. “We have less services being offered at the moment, but many staffers who left the club for other jobs have offered to come back once the club becomes (fully) operational again.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been different ideas and theories on how the fire started, but there has not been a definitive answer. But there was no foul play, Wynn emphasized.

”Right now, we don’t have a final number on what it’s going to cost to rebuild,” said Wynn. “We have architects and plans on rebuilding. We have members of the community who are donating services to help cut the cost (of our rebuild).”

More information about the club will be released closer to the clubhouse reopening. Wynn said the rebuild will both honor the club's history and heritage and also add modern touches.

Wynn said the club's experience dealing with insurance after the fire has been good and the matter soon will be resolved. The experience was much better than the ones many people had after Hurricane Michael, he noted.

Wynn also is humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and dedication from his fellow club leaders and all club members. He knew his one-year term as commodore, which began in January, would be full of challenges. But the club has rallied because the tradition and legacy mean so much.

"People care so deeply," he said.

The Alamitos Bay Yacht Club hosted the 2024 ILCA, 29er & I420 Midwinters West Regatta over the weekend, with more than 200 entries participating — making it the biggest regatta in Long Beach in three decades.

As a part of the trophy presentation on Sunday, regatta co-chair Ed Spotskey commended the yacht club’s staff.

“The staff is always just taken for granted: they ran a clinic, had one day off and then started five days of the biggest regatta in 30 years,” Spotskey said. “It was an absolute honor to bring them in front of all those people and I actually left the podium and stood out front and talked about them as being the backbone of this property. With endless 12-hour days, silently behind the scenes.”

Besides recognizing ABYC’s staff contribution to the regatta’s success, volunteers Judy Mathias and Mary Riddick – both more than 90 year old – were lauded for their commitment and dedication to ABYC.

The club was buzzing with young people from all over the world, many getting their first taste of being in Long Beach as they gear up for the 2028 Olympics.

All four days of the regatta, I kept thinking about what kind of first impression the city made on those young people.

It did seem, after all, as if the weekend highlighted the quintessential Long Beach experience.

I looked at Marine Stadium and there were university students competing in the Gruenberg Cup (more on that later). As I drove by the sailing center on Sunday morning, folks were getting ready for the 12th Annual Adler paddle out.

Saturday night brought Landslide, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band to the Long Beach Arena, where they performed “Tusk” with Poly’s marching band.

It was special to see so many of the people that had volunteered at the regatta over the weekend.

I’ve often thought that we live in a pretty extraordinary place: Alamitos’s Bay is almost a storybook land for our children to learn how to swim and learn various water sports in a safe, happy environment with so many spectacular events.

As I watched those young sailors that dream of coming back to Long Beach for the Olympics, I was convinced we made a great first impression.

College rowing

The Collegiate Rowing Regatta took place on Saturday, March 23, at Marine Stadium.

The hosts, Long Beach State, competed against San Diego State and USC the 2,000-meter races the Gruenberg Cup, with the Trojans taking top honors.

The regatta featured four races for the men’s crews. On the women’s side, the event was only a scrimmaging opportunity for the three teams.

The 12th annual Adler Paddle, which took place in Alamitos Bay on Sunday, March 24, featured 40 people competing in the race commemorating Steve Adler, who died from a genetic disorder called a thoracic aortic dissection.

Organizers reminded everyone of the importance of knowing your genetic health history, as it can save your life or a loved one’s life. All proceeds from raffle ticket and T-shirt sales went to The John Ritter Foundation.

Racing was canceled on the opening day of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Christchurch because of dolphin activity on the course for the duration of the race window.

In line with SailGP protocol, racing was delayed to allow the dolphin to pass through safely. Unfortunately, it did not move outside the course area, which prevented racing from taking place.

ESPN+’s new series “Tryouts” will premiere on April 10 — and will highlight Long Beach’s lifeguards as they try to earn a spot on the elite rescue team.

Candidates must prove they have the physical and mental fortitude to endure the ocean and make quick, lifesaving decisions.

Nearly 100 applicants test their abilities in swimming and running, as well as a high-pressure interview, to prove they have what it takes to be a Long Beach Lifeguard.

Due to an editing glitch a couple of weeks ago, the USC sailing team was not properly acknowledged for taking second place in the college keel boat regatta hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club. USC was leading the regatta going into the final day on Sunday.

The sailing team trains locally out of the US Sailing Center Long Beach and Executive Director Mike Segerblom, a USC alum and All-American SC sailor, coached the USC team at the Harbor Cup.

Most of the USC sailors had no keelboat experience; instead, they only had dinghy experience. Segerblom coached the USC team over several practice sessions within a month of the Harbor Cup on a Catalina 37, according to an email from team member Tim Smith.

The USC skipper was sophomore Morgana Manti, from Italy, and she was the only female skipper at this year’s Harbor Cup.
