Watch: Lürssen’s 146m megayacht Opera makes maiden voyage in Portsmouth
Wednesday, March 8th, 2023
Written by: Marine Industry News
The 146.4-metre superyacht Opera has been delivered to its owners after leaving Lürssen’s Bremen facility in north Germany.
The superyacht — now the tenth largest in the world and the shipyard’s sixth biggest to date — made its maiden voyage in Portsmouth on the UK’s south coast on Sunday (5 March 2023). The vessel undertook a crew change before departing again at 10am Monday morning (6 March).
This impressive drone footage of the yacht’s arrival in Portsmouth, taken by GAP Drone Services, demonstrates the vessel’s daunting scale compared to the buildings on the harbourfront.
Opera has a volume of 12,518 GT. The interior and exterior design is by Terence Disdale Design, while the naval architecture was penned in-house at Lürssen .
Not much detail is known about the yacht’s features, with most information about the project being kept highly secret. Photos show two helipads — one fore and one aft — two swimming pools, and an expansive beach club. Media reports have placed its value at around $450m.

After completing its maiden voyage in Portsmouth, the yacht is expected to continue to its home berth in either the Middle East or the Mediterranean . Unconfirmed media reports claim the yacht’s owner is Abu Dhabi-based Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He is the son of the founder of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Opera is said to be a rebuild project of 145-metre Project Sassi, which was destroyed in a shipyard fire in 2018. The vessel is just one metre longer than Lürssen’s Luminance , which was recently launched and will also be delivered to its owner soon.

EXCLUSIVE: Lürssen's 146m superyacht Project Opera breaks cover

By Mairead Finlay 16 April 2021
The technical launch of Lürssen's latest superyacht Project Opera has taken place at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg this morning. Due for delivery next year, she is believed to be a replacement for the 146m motor yacht SASSI, which was unfortunately destroyed in a fire at Lürssen's German shipyard in 2018. She's been moved to a floating dock before departing to Bremen shortly where she will begin outfitting and prepare for sea trials.
Project OPERA believed to be a direct replacement of destroyed vessel
As typical of Lürssen projects (such as motor yacht NORD ), superyacht Project Opera's build was shrouded in secrecy and completed in record time too: given that she is reportedly the exact same staggering length as luxury yacht SASSI.
According to our exclusive images of Project Opera at the Hamburg shipyard, she appears to be a direct replacement of the destroyed vessel, with similar porthole window designs. We can see she has generous outdoor spaces, including a Jacuzzi on the sundeck and a large swimming pool on the main deck aft. The photos also reveal she has an ample beach club, swimming platform and tender garages.
As one would expect of a superyacht of this size and calibre, Project Opera will almost certainly have the finest facilities for her owner and guests to enjoy. In terms of convenience and the least intrusion possible, this will likely include an elevator, a separate crew passageway and an owner's study. For the ultimate indulgence, a variety of pampering facilities such as a sauna, spa, massage room and hammam are also anticipated to be featured, providing guests with their own reinvigorating private paradise. Other probable amenities include a cinema and a gym.
As for her expected exterior features, she will likely have 2 helipads, including one on the bow — which has become the new standard for superyachts over 100m.
Will motor yacht OPERA be available for yacht charter?
It is believed that Project Opera will be a private yacht and will not become available for superyacht charters once delivered.
