“Buffet breakfast” Review of Southport Yacht Club

photo0.jpg

In short, loved it. One of the few places that does a Saturday buffet breakfast and a $18.00 per person it's also great value. A great view into the marina with nice cool breezes, as for the food had the usual hot foods and cold, all very tasty. Walked out very satisfied, I will be back.

Thank you for the review 19bugzie60, look forward to seeing you again real soon, also have breakfast buffet on from 7am for every day of the Commonwealth games.

Had a nice meal, service was nice from some, others were short and no personality. Lady at front door told us they were booked out and unlikely to get a table for 2.Had no problems with finding a table. It was crowded but a few tables were free. Food was lovely. Not what i expected from a yacht club, very laid back place.

A really nice spot for lunch. Didn't realise it was open to the public. Thought you had to be a member. We sat out on the back deck with a really nice view of the mariner. Menu was good and they do have daily specials. Very welcoming by the staff. Worth a visit if you are visiting the Gold Coast . Close to SeaWorld .

The bistro was where we dined on the deck section. Very RSL style with excessively loud bingo calling. Really wide decking making any standard ladies heels impossible to walk in. Menu was good Over priced Poorly overcooked seafood This is a yacht club so I would dearly like to see a big overhaul to suit the title or huge decrease in price. Easily accessible for those needing wheelchair access. Parking on premises is good.

Invited on my birthday. Good choice on menu; we went for a steak and NZ Sole. Both beautifully cooked in casual but smart surroundings. Always good for lunch or dinner.

Yachtapalooza Sets Sail This Weekend, Aiming To Get South Siders Excited About Boating

EAST SIDE — A day-long open house for local boaters of all experience levels this weekend in East Side aims to be an accessible, fun draw for newbies to the nautical world, organizers said.

Yachtapalooza takes place 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Crowley’s Yacht Yard , 3434 E. 95th St.

The free, indoor event celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. It features free seminars and demonstrations, a pig roast, live music, a flea market Friday and Saturday and a three-day sale on nautical items from Boater’s Closet Friday-Sunday.

Organizers hope to draw 1,000 current and future mariners out to this year’s event, said Nick Fugate, sales manager at Crowley’s Yacht Yard.

Yachtapalooza will also include a boat showcase by Nautical Donations , Crowley’s charitable arm, featuring several rehabbed, budget-friendly boats for sale.

Proceeds from the boat sales will support nonprofits like the Chicago Maritime Society and the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation, Fugate said.

The Chicago Boat Show dropped its sailing portion in recent years and is planning a move to the suburbs next year , so this weekend “is probably the closest thing to a sailboat show that we’ve got in Chicago,” said Charles Szymanski, a Yachtapalooza organizer and president of the nonprofit Rainbow Races .

With a few dozen vendors and free seminars on topics like marine pumps and toilets, splicing line and rope, and applying epoxy and varnish, Yachtapalooza offers “anything you would need” to maintain a boat, Fugate said.

The seminars give attendees “the chance to use the products, put their hands on them and feel them, and learn a little more than watching a powerpoint on a screen,” he said.

The event is “the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to get into sailing, [with] questions about sailing or [wanting] to check out a sailboat for the first time,” Szymanski said.

yacht club gold coast menu

Rainbow Races is one of Yachtapalooza’s featured vendors, and its members will host one of the day’s seminars. The group aims to erase barriers marginalized groups may face in getting into sailing, Szymanski said.

It’s the only U.S. Sailing-sanctioned, LGBTQ+ sailing school in the country, and the only LGBTQ+ sailing organization in the Midwest, he said.

Rainbow Races’ first day of sailing school begins May 18. The group is offering a $50 early-bird discount on sailing classes through the end of April with the discount code “hydra50.” To register, click here .

The sailing world struggles with homophobia, misogyny, elitism and other forms of discrimination prevalent in other sports, Szymanski said. Rainbow Races creates a safe community around the sport which tries to counter those problems, he said.

Despite its issues, due to the collaborative nature of sailing, it’s also “probably the most friendly sports arena I’ve experienced,” Szymanski said.

“Sailing is a true team sport,” he said. “You have to trust your crewmates with your life, and you also have to support each other.

“Sailors are aware if we don’t evolve, we die … If the wind changes, you have to change with it.”

yacht club gold coast menu

Chicago’s sailing community is robust, particularly with groups like the Park District, local yacht clubs and Rainbow Races encouraging new people to explore the sport, Fugate said.

But with a massive lake as Chicago’s backyard and “a very strong maritime history” in the city, the community could definitely stand to grow, Szymanski said.

Yachtapalooza is a free “casual meeting of the minds” that can help spread the joy of sailing and boating and change a misperception that the community is only for the ultra-rich, Szymanski said.

Million-dollar yachts “are great to look at and to dream about, but when you get down to it, Chicago is a blue-collar city,” Szymanski said. “A lot of the folks trying to buy boats are probably younger and more [budget-conscious]. It makes this a really unique opportunity to bring people in, in a very casual, unencumbered way.”

Activities & Experiences

Whether you’re looking for a decadent, luxurious afternoon or a thrill seeking adventure, the Gold Coast has something for you. Invite all your closest friends for a day of exploring, and cap it all off with a gourmet dinner onboard as you’re whisked back to shore.

Before setting sail, consider adding these must-do activities to your schedule:

VISIT THE THEME PARKS

No mention of the Gold Coast would be complete without discussing the theme park options. One of the area's biggest drawcards, families from all over Australia (and the world) travel to Warner Bros Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld or Wet n’ Wild for a day of heart-pumping fun.

Ride thrilling roller coasters, meet some of your favourite movie characters and spot fun loving dolphins demonstrating natural behaviours. Get in early to beat the queues and don't forget sunscreen!

SEE THE SKYPOINT OBSERVATION DECK

Located in iconic Surfers Paradise, the Q1 building rises 230 metres above sea level, dominating the city skyline. From the top of the building the SkyPoint observation deck provides panoramic views of the stunning Gold Coast. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the SkyPoint Climb. Australia’s highest external climb, this adventure departs from the 77th level of the Q1 building. Participants will be guided to the eagle's nest located 270 metres above the ground below. Enjoy 360° views of the beautiful skyline and toast your success at the 77th floor Bistro+Bar.

DINE AT KIYOMI

Tucked away inside the glittering Star Casino is the mouthwatering Kiyomi japanese restaurant. Visionary Executive Head Chef Chase Kojima has created a delectable menu of authentic Tokyo inspired dishes with a modern twist. Put your trust in the chef by dining on a pre-set menu of small plates including tender Wagyu beef with an eel and kombu jus. Bookings are essential as this is one of the Gold Coast's most talked about establishments.

TAKE TO THE SKIES

If there’s one thing the Gold Coast does best, it’s luxury and excess without apology. What could be more luxurious than taking a private helicopter tour above this golden coastline. We recommend flying to Sirromet Wines, the largest and most awarded wine producer in Queensland.

Have a helicopter drop you right at the cellar door. Customisable tours are also available. If you fly with Gold Coast Helitours, you can even have Michelin star chef Frank Meijer be your pilot for the day as he takes you to a scenic location for a gourmet picnic.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate runs for fourth term in Queensland local government elections

Analysis Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate runs for fourth term in Queensland local government elections

man in suit with necklace

In a city renowned for colourful characters and big personalities, it is not surprising the Gold Coast has wound up with Tom Tate as mayor.

The Ferrari-driving, Rolex-wearing, weight-lifting, Laos-born former civil engineer and property developer is gunning for a record fourth term at the upcoming local government election.

The 65-year-old is a polarising figure, with a penchant for making headlines, riling up his detractors, and butting heads with former premier Annastacia Palaszczuk .

He admits his leadership style is a "bit rough around the edges" but dismisses his critics as "emotional, not logical".

"I'm straight talking — you know exactly what I am thinking and I tell it as it is," Mr Tate said.

Tom Tate Gold Coast mayor and his wife Ruth Tate

He came to power in 2012 and was re-elected in landslide victories in 2016 and 2020 — with 63 per cent and 55 per cent of the vote respectively — becoming the city's first mayor to win a third consecutive term.

Announcing his 2024 campaign last month, Mr Tate declared he was "in his prime" and said he had no plan to retire any time soon.

"My passion for the city remains strong and we'll take it one term at a time," he said.

He has promised to deliver a 12,000-seat indoor arena and overtake Melbourne as the event capital of Australia in his next term.

He has also promised to build a $1.5 billion green waste facility by 2036.

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate and Australian boxer Tim Tszyu

Candidate contest

There are eight challengers vying with Tate for the mayoralty at the 2024 Gold Coast city council election: Virginia Freebody, Danielle Dunsmore, Lavinia Rampino, Rosie Foster, Jennifer Horsburgh, Gary Pead, Brett Lambert, and Eddy Sarroff.

Mr Sarroff, who previously served on the council for 17 years, is widely tipped to be the mayor's biggest rival.

He said community groups, friends, and unnamed "elected representatives" urged him to run.

Mr Sarroff runs a real estate business on the Gold Coast alongside his son Edward Sarroff, who is also running for council in Division 7 against the incumbent, Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden, who has been charged with the murder of his stepfather last August.

"The reason I have stepped up to the mark is because the community is saying they have lost confidence in the current leadership and don't feel their voices are being heard," he said.

"They are sick of the spin and, at times, the lack of due process."

A man sits at a desk. He is wearing glasses.

Ms Dunsmore, who holds an MBA and has worked for the Gold Coast and Brisbane city councils, said affordable housing was the city's most pressing issue.

"I had to [run]," she said.

"I didn't like the direction the Gold Coast was going with the development that is happening everywhere."

Ms Rampino, the former chief executive of the Gold Coast Show Society, said the coast was directionless and had "serious issues".

"We need new leadership, we need new vision for our city," she said.

"We need to depoliticise the council and we need to have some transparency in communication with the people."

Track record

The Gold Coast is the second-largest council in Australia, behind Brisbane, with a budget of $2.2 billion for 2023–24.

Mr Tate has presided over a period of extraordinary growth.

His time in office has included hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games, construction of the $135 million HOTA gallery and cultural precinct, securing funding for the expansion of the light rail network, and steering the tourist town's economy through COVID lockdowns.

So, after 12 years in the top job, what is Mr Tate's legacy?

In the lead-up to the 2016 election, he held a press conference at the airport declaring he wanted to see the light rail extended to Coolangatta by 2020.

The second stage from Southport to Helensvale has since been built, but eight years later the tram is no closer to the airport.

Construction is underway on stage three from Broadbeach to Burleigh, albeit behind schedule and over budget, but the state government is responsible for the rollout.

The final 13-kilometre southern stage from Burleigh to the airport has been the subject of fierce debate between politicians from all levels of government and residents along the proposed route.

Despite protests from community groups, Mr Tate has been a staunch advocate of the project that has become emblematic of his unapologetically pro-business stance.

He has promised to make sure stage four is finished "on time and on budget".

"I've got the economy growing and I have created more jobs," he said.

"I hope they remember me as the person who had a crack."

If the light rail is a piece of legacy infrastructure to hang his hat on, the ill-fated cruise ship terminal — once the mayor's pet project — is one that can be chalked up as a failure.

Over the years, Mr Tate backed proposals for an offshore cruise ship terminal at North Kirra and The Spit, as well as one at Wave Break Island in the broadwater.

But the controversial plans were shelved by the state government after backlash from surfers and environmentalists.

Courting controversy

His self-described rough-around-the-edges approach has seen his time in office dogged by accusations of impropriety, investigations by the state's Crime and Corruption Commission , and findings of misconduct.

The dealings in question include interfering in disciplinary proceedings against his former chief of staff, billing ratepayers for football tickets, and persistent questions over the acquisition and lucrative sale of land at the Surfers Paradise Bowls Club .

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate speaks to the media

"If you throw mud, some will stick," Mr Tate said, when asked whether he thought the incidents had tarnished his reputation.

"There has never been a charge laid. Why? Because there is no corruption.

"I'm still here and the [former] chairman of the CCC [Alan MacSporran] ain't."

Mr Tate is no stranger to headline-grabbing moments.

Most recently he was in a high-profile stoush with former premier Ms Palaszczuk over his campaign to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games , despite being told repeatedly by the state government it was not going to happen.

His critics point to the saga as an example of his predisposition for policy on the fly and aversion to community consultation.

"Do I think of things on the fly? It may look like that because I'm a relaxed speaker and easygoing guy but every time I say something to stir things up, I already know how we can run it," he said.

"People go, 'Oh yeah, that's another thought bubble from Tom', but no, I know where the money is coming from.

"I consult with our councillors, they are the elected representatives of our city. Any outside consultation to that is posturing."

A born-again Christian, Mr Tate raised eyebrows in 2022 when it was revealed he had appointed his longtime spiritual advisor Sue Baynes to a ratepayer-funded role and opened a prayer room at council chambers.

The room was available for public bookings until a group of demon worshippers tried to hire it for a satanic ritual .

Mr Tate voted to withdraw from the South East Queensland Council of Mayors on the eve of Brisbane's confirmation as host of the 2032 Olympics and the Gold Coast was  excluded from the Games' organising committee .

He argued the lobby group's $360,000 membership fee was a waste of money and vowed to go it alone in pursuing funding from the state and federal government for local projects.

"If you're already getting funding and I can ring all ministers, premier and prime minister, then I don't see why we have to be in the council of mayors," he said.
