• Grinding/Sanding fiberglass to create a smooth finish
• Painting gel coat on the finished fiberglass
• Drilling holes for installing rig tubes
• Installing plumbing materials, fuel, water and waste tanks
• Prep liners and decks
• Install hardware on the liners and decks: deck faucets, cleats, fuel, water and waste fills
• Performs assembly-type functions, using hand or power tools.
• Perform carpentry related work.

Under supervision, assembles, tests and repairs electrical/electronic, mechanical systems and components. Applies knowledge of electrical/electronic and mechanical principles in determining equipment malfunctions and applies skills in assembly of harnesses and systems for marine use. Provides skilled electrical/electronic support to all areas of Manufacturing.

Under the guidance of the Department Supervisor and Engineering, this position requires the ability to construct full scale wood mockups of boats parts and sections for use as guide in shaping or positioning of fiberglass boat parts. May construct wooden plugs for molded parts, such as hulls, decks, cabins and other parts for fiberglass boats. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  including but not limited to the following:

• Constructs template, using knowledge of geometric construction, and hand tools and woodworking machines, such as crosscut, rip, and band saws.
• Marks templates with identifying data and instructions, such as number of pieces to be made, type, and weight of stock, and location for installation.
• Performs daily and regular cleaning
• Complies with all quality policies, specifications, regulations and instructions
• Performs all tasks in a safe and responsible manner
• Other duties as assigned.

This position requires performing repetitive work to final assembly and preparation of fiberglass boats.

Powerboat racing may seem a world away from the type of cruising most of us do but the sportsboats we enjoy today wouldn’t be half as good as they are without the racers, designers and builders whose heroic efforts helped shape them.

Auto-boat racing, as it was originally known, traces its history back to the late 19th century and for a brief period was even an Olympic sport, with races staged off the Isle of Wight in 1908. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s and 1970s that the sport exploded in popularity as developments in engineering, materials, speed, safety and propulsion really took off.

Racing was the anvil on which these promising technologies were forged. So what are the ten most significant events, inventions and people that have contributed to today’s impressive levels of performance, safety and utility?

While many of these names and events may be unfamiliar now, they are the stuff of legend to all who recall the glory days of British powerboat racing.

1. The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes offshore powerboat race

Many people regard offshore powerboat racing as the ultimate challenge for craft and crew. Arguably the most challenging race of all and certainly one of the oldest is the legendary Cowes-Torquay competition.

Initiated in 1961 by Daily Express newspaper magnate and keen yachtsman, Sir Max Aitken, who foresaw it would help grow the UK marine industry, it bred a string of British and international heroes and brands. This 200-mile race, now known as the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes, and its coveted Harmsworth Trophy, intermittently awarded since 1903, is still the one all top powerboat racers yearn to win.

2. The marathon Round Britain Powerboat Race

If a 200-mile race sounds challenging, the 1,500-mile endurance marathon that is the Round Britain Race is on an altogether different scale, yet it proved so appealing that it has been run three times over four decades.

The first BP-sponsored race in 1969 comprised ten stages over 1,459 miles and was won by Timo Mäkinen, a champion Finnish rally-driver in Avenger Too propelled by triple Mercury outboards – he averaged 37mph.

The 1984 race was sponsored by Everest double glazing and attracted famous names, including Italian racer/designer Fabio Buzzi driving White Iveco , a single-step GRP monohull with four 600bhp Iveco diesels. Against him was fellow Italian Renato della Valle in Ego Lamborghini , an aluminium-hull craft powered by two ear-splitting 800hp, race-tuned V12 Lamborghinis.

Victory went to Buzzi who, after the 157-mile Dundee-Whitby leg, during which White Iveco averaged a staggering 69 knots, dismissed it with shrug saying: ‘In Italy, this is just a cruising boat.’

The race was revived in 2008 attracting a field of 47 raceboats old and new, including a number of production RIBs and sportsboats from companies like Scorpion , Goldfish and Scanner. The favourites included Fabio Buzzi again in his classic four-engined Red FPT , and Austrian casino millionaire Hannes Bohinc in another Buzzi-designed monohull Wettpunkt .

This time the overall winner was a Greek entry Blue FPT navigated by Britain’s Dag Pike, who at 75 years old, was the event’s oldest competitor. Many of the production boats also did remarkably well, showing just how far they have come in recent years.

3. Powerboat racer Steve Curtis

If the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes is the benchmark, surely the top driver must be found among its winners? Home-grown contenders must include Tommy Sopwith, a winner in 1961, 1968 and 1970 and the Gardner brothers, Charles and Jimmy, who clocked up victories in 1964 with their Bertram 31 Surfrider , and again in 1967 in the iconic Sonny Levi-designed Surfury .

On the worldwide stage, Italy’s Renato Della Valle won four Cowes Torquay Cowes races in a row from 1982 to 1985. Hannes Bohinc collected the trophies in 1995 and 2003 and another German, Markus Hendricks, whose boat sank on the 2008 Round Britain, took a re-engined 34-year-old monohull, Cinzano , to victory in 2009 and 2011.

They are all brilliant in their way but how could this category ignore the UK’s Steve Curtis MBE, owner of Cougar Marine, with no fewer than eight Class One powerboat racing world championships in fearsome 175mph catamarans? Curtis’s 2016 victory in the roughest ever Cowes Torquay Cowes race, in a 30-year-old aluminium boat sealed his place in the history books.

4. Lady Violet Aitken – the first lady of fast

The field of legendary female powerboat racers may be smaller but is no less worthy for it with three principal candidates – two titled British ladies and an American grandmother.

From the USA, Betty Cook – focussed, smart, and tough – arrived with her 36ft Cigarette Kaama and blew away the opposition in the 1978 Cowes Torquay Cowes race. She went on to secure two world championships.

The British aristocracy provides the eccentric and brave Countess of Arran, who fielded fast if unconventional designs of three-pointers like Highland Fling among others. She was described by The Guardian in her obituary as ‘beautiful, vivacious, funny, fun and entrancing’.

But our top female driver is Lady Violet Aitken, wife of Cowes-Torquay founder Sir Max Aitken and Ladies’ Trophy winner on several occasions. Racing is still in the blood as her daughter Laura and granddaughter Lucci are both keen powerboat racers.

Buzzi’s legendary status stems from 40 years of work in the marine industry

5. Powerboat designer Fabio Buzzi

The late Fabio Buzzi is a legend, both behind the helm and at the drawing board. In more than 40 years of activity, his company FB Design has won a staggering 52 world championships; seven Harmsworth Trophies; two Round Britains; and set no less than 56 world speed records in both European and American classes.

Buzzi designed the boat that has won more races than any other powerboat in history, the quadruple-engined, be-winged 44ft Cesa/Gancia dei Gancia . Today, the descendants of these monohull designs are found in service with government and military agencies all around the world, as well as leisure craft like the Sunseeker XS2000 and Hawk 38 .

But the competition is hard-fought. Sonny Levi’s delta-shaped race-boats A’Speranziella , Merry-go-Round , Alto Volante , and Surfury leave lasting memories by their sheer performance and poise. And their legacy, the Levi Corsair, is still made today.

The UK’s Don Shead also runs Buzzi close having designed ten Cowes-Torquay winners and the 1984 Round Britain race winner. The early Sunseeker ranges also came from his drawing board.

Peter Thornycroft and Alan Burnard merit attention as designers of the iconic Nelson and Fairey hulls respectively, many of which are still in service today. But the sheer scale of Fabio’s achievements trumps them all.

The Mercury V8 took powerboating to another level

6. The Mercury V8 engine

Early racers only had American petrol V8s for choice, mainly Ford Dearborn Interceptors, tweaked to deliver big torque and 300-400bhp. There were also a few marinised Jaguar straight-six engines, which consumed oil at a terrifying rate and were fragile. Then Carl Kiekhaefer, head of US outboard giant Mercury, refined numerous Mercury Racing V8s and Lamborghini V12s providing up to 850bhp and things took off. Literally.

To this market came car racing engineers Ilmor in the 1990s with a tuned Dodge Viper V10 engine, pushing out a reliable 700-800bhp. The Italians, at the behest of Fabio Buzzi, developed the 16-litre 1,000hp Seatek diesel for ultra-marathon events, providing unparalleled torque with (relatively) light weight and reliability.

A special mention for the maddest motors must go to Tommy Sopwith, who put a pair of helicopter turbines into a 44ft Don Shead hull delivering over 1500bhp and Domenico Achilli, who ‘glued’ two Subaru flat-four rally car engines together, and split our eardrums while winning the 1990 Cowes Torquay Cowes race.

But for sheer consistency and the countless number of ever-faster, smoother, more reliable production engines its powerboat racing successes have spawned, Mercury and its big displacement V8s have to take the crown.

7. The sterndrive unit

Early shaft-driven race-boats normally placed engines amidships with straight shafts to the propellers. Then the vee-drive option enabled engines to be moved astern for better weight distribution but, in both cases, the angle of thrust was still pushing the hull ‘uphill’.

With the arrival of the sterndrive came horizontal thrust to harness the growing power of engines, and hugely reduced hydrodynamic drag by doing away with separate rudders, shafts and P-brackets. This greatly increased both speed and efficiency while the ability to trim the angle of thrust also enabled drivers to adjust the boat’s trim to suit differing sea conditions.

Surface-drives from Arneson and Trimax reduced drag even further but at the cost of low speed manoeuvrability and we mustn’t overlook the impact of the outboard engine on both race and leisure sportsboats.

However, for sheer versatility, the impact it has had on both powerboat racing and leisure craft, and its ability to work equally well with both petrol and diesel engines, the sterndrive has to take it.

Hunt’s deep-vee design proved a powerboat game-changer

8. Racing hull designer Ray Hunt

The most successful hull builders embraced the fast-developing world of engineering and materials as well as developments in design. Cold-molded mahogany plywood gave way to GRP, which in turn surrendered to carbon-fibre reinforced by Kevlar.

However, it’s hard to think of a bigger leap in hull design than Ray Hunt’s deep-vee concept, demonstrating an immediate and staggering superiority over previous hard and rounded chines. Nothing underpins this assertion better than Dick Bertram’s 1961 Miami-Nassau victory in his prototype Moppie – finishing a whole day ahead of the third-placed boat.

The likes of Levi, Shead and Bertram all helped refine the concept but the winner has to be Ray Hunt who, along with Dick Bertram’s investment and encouragement, became the grandfather of today’s sportsboats.

9. Speed record breaker Peter Dredge

World Water Speed records set by the likes of Donald Campbell’s Bluebird and Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic Challenger II are momentous achievements in their fields but their designs have bred few, if any, current sportsboats. Offshore powerboat racing records may not be as well publicised but are arguably far more relevant.

The average speed records of historic races like the Cowes Torquay Cowes race are a perfect demonstration of the improvements made in powertrains, hull design and strength. The first race in 1961 was won by a 24ft wooden Christina averaging 24.5mph. It took another two years to break 40mph, and a further four to exceed 50mph. In 1969 the record tumbled again with an average speed of over 60mph.

A gap of six years then ensued before the record climbed over 70mph and a further 13 years for technology to reach an average exceeding 80mph. A very calm race in 1990 saw the Italians hit over 90mph average – and then we waited 25 years before that speed was finally exceeded in 2015.

So until that record is beaten, preferably with a speed of more than 100mph, our winner is the current record holder Peter Dredge who propelled the awesome 1,500bhp, 44ft Vector Martini to victory at a remarkable average speed of 94.5mph.

Dag Pike, the brains behind so many great powerboat victories

10. National treasure Dag Pike

No top ten list could be complete without mention of those quiet but significant contributors to the sport of offshore powerboat racing. Among those names must be Class-3 racer, commentator, sport historian and MBY ’s longest-serving contributor Ray Bulman, who passed away last year .

The racer, organiser, enthusiast and flamboyant, chain-smoking Tim Powell also has to be in the running. Other characters like Commander Petroni of Italy’s Tornado Racing Team and Tommy Sopwith’s regular crew Charles de Selincourt, who guided him to victory in several Cowes Torquay Cowes races also deserve mentions.

But my National Treasure award goes to Dag Pike; writer, raconteur and navigator extraordinaire who has been the brains behind countless race wins for dozens of different drivers. Having been shipwrecked eight times himself but also having rescued more than eight people in his long career offshore, he has in his own words ‘balanced the books’.

The last word

As with any top ten list it can never be comprehensive and will always be open to differences of opinion but that’s not the point of this article. We simply invite you to ponder that, whatever boat you drive and whatever propels it, its performance and seaworthiness possesses at least some of the DNA of the many great raceboats, designers, engineers and technologies, forged in the heat of offshore battle.

Abu Dhabi , UAE, Monday, 09 June 2003 - With the Federation of Russia Grand Prix scheduled for August 17, the UIM Powerboat Homologation Committee plans to visit the site of the race, not far from Moscow center, from June 16-20, 2003. The Federation of Russia Grand Prix is the fifth race on the 2003 UIM F1 Powerboat Championship calendar and the ninth time that an F1 Powerboat Championship event takes place in Russia.

Organisers of the 2003 event plan a great show for an expected 50,000 spectators. Since 1989, FI Powerboats have raced in Minsk (1989), Leningrad (1990,1991), St Petersburg (1995,1996) and Moscow (1997, 1998 and 1999).

"After three years away, I am happy to see the F1 Powerboat Championship back in Moscow, thanks to the Moscow Government and to 7TV Sports Television Channel," said Nicolo di San Germano, promoter of the UIM F1 Powerboat series. "This Grand Prix is an exciting new event, even though the Federation of Russia has hosted F1 Powerboat racing before.

"The last Grand Prix in Moscow gave us a lot of action on the river in the city's famous Gorki Park. But the 2003 edition will take place in Strogino, seven kilometres away from the center of Moscow. Found by Pierre Bogdanov, President of the Russian Federation Motonautique, this new location will allow FI Powerboat racing on a much wider circuit, compared with Gorki Park. "

The charismatic di San Germano has worked assiduously since 1993 to make F1 Powerboat racing a global sport. "I am gratified to see that some of the concepts that I initiated have begun to take root," di San Germano said. These include among others proper racing pits and hospitality units.

"In the last ten years, the F1 Powerboat racing programme has taken the contenders to Asia, Europe and the Middle East, and Far East" di San Germano said. The promoter has dreams of additional locations in the future. "But today," he said, "I really hope that the Homologation Committee will find that the circuit in Strogino meets all the necessary criteria for a good show, perfect organisation, and, above all, safety."

Like Tesla and BMW, Toyota plans to allow drivers to easily change car color

Ditching vinyl wraps and painting jobs, the motor company plans to use the technology that can change colors when in heat or exposed to light.

Toyota is following in the footsteps of Tesla and BMW and hoping to allow its customers to easily change the color of their cars.

The automobile company started creating the technology to make that happen in 2022, but officially published it in the United States Patent and Trademark Office on March 19. The patent allows drivers to freely change the color of their car, Toyota recently told USA TODAY.

Ditching vinyl wraps and painting jobs, the motor company plans to use the technology that can change colors when in heat or exposed to light. To achieve a desired look, vehicles will have to go through a tunnel-like garage where the paint is heated and a color-modulator device sprays them.

When the patent is available to the public, drivers can request the treatment either when they buy a new car or if they already have a car that they want to change colors., the company said.

Tesla's software changes car color instantly

If you thought the basic white color of a Tesla was boring, you can change the color of your Tesla from inside of your car. In February 2022, the automaker announced a new software update that would enable its drivers to change their car color with a variety of options displayed on the screen. 

Car Colorizer, the feature that changes the color of a Tesla, can be completed on the screen in the car or through the Tesla app, a company news release said. 

With the color wheel to change a Tesla to any color imaginable, the software has various paint finishes. From solid, metallic to matte, a Tesla driver can change their paint color any way they want to at anytime. 

“You can hate on Teslas all you want, but I bet your car cannot do this,” an Instagram user said while showing off his Tesla that he changed from white to matte red. 

BMW released its color-changing technology last year

BMW released its color-changing technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in May 2022. The show, held in Las Vegas, unveiled the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink. The BMW iX Flow is of capable of changing color at the click of a button, according to a news release by BMW .

“This gives the driver the freedom to express different facets of their personality or even their enjoyment of change outwardly, and to redefine this each time they sit in their car,” Stella Clarke, head of project for the BMW iX Flow, said in a statement. “Similar to fashion or the status ads on social media channels, the vehicle then becomes an expression of different moods and circumstances in daily life.”

In an Instagram post, Alexandra Mary Hirsch, better known as Supercar.Blondie, demonstrated how the color technology in the BMW iX Flow works. In the settings mode of the app, the all-electric SUV can be changed from white to black with the click of a button.

In addition, the BMW iX Flow can display two colors at once circling around the vehicle with its wave mode. 

“This is not a light reflection. This is actually changing paint,” Hirsch said in the post. “So cool.”

Ready or not, self-driving semi-trucks are coming to America’s highways

Autonomous truck companies plan a major expansion this year to deliver your packages and food, speeding well ahead of federal safety regulations.

PALMER, Tex. — Perched in the cab of a 35,000-pound semi-truck lumbering south on Interstate 45, AJ Jenkins watched the road while the big rig’s steering wheel slid through his hands. Jenkins was in the driver’s seat, but he wasn’t driving. The gigantic 18-wheeler was guiding itself.

Over several miles on the popular trucking route between Dallas and Houston, the truck navigated tire debris, maneuvered around a raggedy-looking flatbed and slowed for an emergency vehicle. Exiting the highway, it came to an abrupt stop as a pickup jumped its turn at a four-way intersection.

“You need to be ready for anything,” said Jenkins, 64, a former FedEx driver whose job is to take control if anything goes wrong. “People do some crazy stuff around trucks.”

Operated by Aurora Innovation, the truck is part of a new class of autonomous big rigs plying the nation’s highways. By the end of this year, the trucks will for the first time start traveling alone, without human minders like Jenkins, as two major companies — Aurora and Kodiak Robotics — launch fully autonomous trucks in Texas.

The advent of robot trucks could have a massive impact on America’s supply chain, dramatically reducing the time it takes to transport goods from place to place and unbinding the trucking industry from the costs and physical limitations of human labor. But the technology’s advancement has sparked concerns about highway safety, job loss, a lack of federal regulation and a patchwork of state laws regarding where and how autonomous trucks can operate.

By default, driverless passenger vehicles and trucks can ride anywhere in the United States, unless a state explicitly says they can’t. That means companies can test and operate their vehicles across most of the country. Two dozen states, including Texas, Florida, Arizona and Nevada, specifically allow driverless operations, according to data compiled by Aurora, while another 16 states have no regulations specific to autonomous vehicles. The remaining 10 — including California, Massachusetts and New York — place limits on autonomous vehicles within their borders.

Alarmed by the slow pace of federal regulation, labor and safety advocates are pushing legislation in several states to ban driverless trucks outright. So far, the effort has been unsuccessful. The California legislature approved a measure last year that would have required human operators in all autonomous trucks, but Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vetoed it, calling it “unnecessary” in light of state regulations that already ban autonomous vehicles over 10,000 pounds.

Transportation experts have been frustrated at how slowly the federal government has moved on the issue, given its potential to disrupt a massive part of the American economy.

Steve Viscelli, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania who studies the trucking industry, said autonomous trucking could “change the geography of our economy in the way that railroads and shipping did.”

“There are real concerns that drivers have of the impacts of this,” Viscelli said, “and we need to take them seriously.”

Driverless passenger cars have caused chaos in cities like San Francisco, including one horrific accident last year when a robotaxi hit a jaywalking pedestrian and dragged her about 20 feet. The potential for catastrophe is even greater with massive autonomous trucks, critics say.

“Even with these small vehicles, it has been a disaster,” said Peter Finn, a vice president of the Teamsters Local Union 856, which represents truck drivers. “The notion that there is going to be no human being in large trucks barreling down the highways absolutely frightens me.”

Major expansion

Today, Aurora’s long-haul trucks are transporting packages and produce — about 100 deliveries a week — for FedEx, Uber Freight and others. Founded in 2017 by former executives at Uber, Google’s self-driving project and Tesla, the company has been training its driverless trucks in Texas since 2020.

By the end of this year, Aurora says it plans to have about 20 fully autonomous trucks working the 240-mile stretch between Dallas and Houston. Eventually, it plans to operate thousands of trucks all across America.

Kodiak Robotics, which was founded by a former employee of Uber and Alphabet’s Waymo, similarly plans to launch a fleet of trucks by the end of the year in Texas. A third company, Daimler Trucks — a subsidiary of German-owned Daimler that has partnered with Torc Robotics — is a few years behind, with plans to launch a driverless fleet in America by 2027.

Nat Beuse, Aurora’s chief safety officer, said the self-driving truck industry has been “methodical” in deploying its technology, adopting strict safety standards, including how the trucks respond to various system failures. Beuse said the company has learned from the mistakes of other autonomous vehicle companies, including General Motors-owned Cruise, which recalled its entire driverless fleet after the San Francisco crash.

“The federal government has been clear in that unless a state says you can’t deploy, you can. But that doesn’t mean as a company we don’t have responsibilities,” Beuse said. “This is not a science experiment.”

Marc Williams, executive director of the Texas Department of Transportation, said Texas has a good relationship with the companies testing on its roads. The state has been at the “forefront” of supporting the industry, he said, and it is critical for its economic growth as demand grows for moving freight around the state.

“If we’re going to meet that challenge, it requires us to be successful in these partnership and collaborations with trucking and autonomous trucking industry,” Williams said at a February panel with Partners for Automated Vehicle Education, a coalition of industry advocates.

The average driver would find it tough to spot one of Aurora’s trucks, which bear only a small rear-facing sign that reads “AUTONOMOUS TEST VEHICLE.”

The view from inside the cab looks very different, however. On a recent day in February, two computer screens animated a flurry of potential hazards: Tire debris dotting the shoulder. Impatient SUVs and sedans eager to pass. An SUV merging without a turn signal.

Stephen Tune, a vehicle operations specialist, sat in the passenger seat, monitoring the screens. He narrated the truck’s every movement for Jenkins: “Moving to the right to avoid tire debris,” Tune said as the turn signal began to blink. “Moving to the left as a courtesy to the car behind us.”

On this drive, the truck followed all the rules of the road and even demonstrated an uncommon courtesy to other drivers. But it’s the unexpected scenarios — from errors by human drivers to sudden mechanical issues — that worry veteran truck drivers like Lewie Pugh.

“I know my computer and cellphone make mistakes. Machines can have bad days, too,” said Pugh, executive vice president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, a national organization representing professional truck drivers.

While Texas has been the center of autonomous truck testing, companies also have been running vehicles in Oklahoma and New Mexico, among other places. Since 2021, trucks operated by all three major companies have been involved in a handful of traffic incidents, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

None have been fatal or caused serious injuries, but the incident logs provide a window into the range of obstacles the trucks have faced.

In July 2022, a Daimler truck rolled over an object on a New Mexico highway that punctured its fuel tank, causing oil to spill onto the highway. In December 2023, a deer stumbled onto the path of a Daimler truck testing in Texas. The test driver took over, but the truck still hit the deer.

Earlier that month, a pickup truck trying to overtake an Aurora vehicle hydroplaned and hit the Aurora’s trailer. The Aurora detected the pickup but was unable to avoid contact.

The companies will be attempting to succeed in an industry that has faced setbacks. Waymo, the self-driving company owned by Alphabet, said in July that it would push back the timeline of its trucking efforts so it could instead focus on ride-hailing. Chinese autonomous trucking company TuSimple Holdings wound down its U.S. operations in 2023, a year after one of its automated trucks was involved in a crash while testing.

Still, autonomous trucks will make highways safer, those working on the technology say. According to the latest federal data, 5,788 people were killed in crashes involving a large truck in 2021, representing 13 percent of traffic deaths that year.

Tech moving faster than regulation

As profit-driven companies race toward deployment, the federal government has been slow to grapple with the implications of the new technology. The U.S. Transportation Department has largely allowed the companies to test their products on public roads, as long as companies comply with the same safety standards that apply to traditional human-driven trucks.

Within the Transportation Department, NHTSA and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration have been working for more than five years on a proposal to create basic “safety guardrails” for autonomous trucks, including requirements for remote assistants to monitor the driverless vehicles, inspections and vehicle maintenance. The proposed rule, which was submitted to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget in December, would be the Biden administration’s most significant action on autonomous trucking.

Transportation Department spokesperson Sean Manning was unable to say when the rule might be finalized, as it still has to go through several more bureaucratic steps. Until then, Manning said existing laws prohibit any vehicle, including those equipped with automated technology, from “posing an unreasonable risk to safety.” Meanwhile, NHTSA “will continue its vigorous enforcement using its defect and oversight authorities,” Manning said — including investigations or recalls — if it finds evidence of risk.

Aurora and Kodiak both support the idea of federal regulation, which would give them more certainty about standards as they expand nationally.

“Having a federal framework gives confidence to regulators and the public that the federal government is watching this closely,” said Daniel Goff, the head of policy at Kodiak.

Anxious truck drivers

Richard Gaskill, a truck driver in Texas since 1998, said he spots an autonomous test vehicle every now and then as he carries loads along I45.

“It’s too new for me to trust,” Gaskill, 50, said of the technology. “I don’t like the idea of these being out there taking our jobs.”

Gaskill’s anxiety is shared by union and trade groups like the Teamsters. But a 2021 study from the Transportation Department suggests concerns about widespread job loss may be misplaced: Autonomous trucking could at most lead to 11,000 layoffs in the next five years, the study says — less than 2 percent of the long-haul driver workforce.

Meanwhile, the study notes that the technology could create new job opportunities for maintenance technicians, dispatchers and fuelers while helping to relieve the drudgery that sometimes comes with being a long-haul trucker. And the autonomous truck companies say their technology can help transport goods around the country faster, as robot trucks can drive longer hours than human drivers.

Gaskill doesn’t buy it. He says he can’t fathom how a robot could navigate the nation’s chaotic highways better than he can. But as companies like Aurora expand, he is resigned to the fact that autonomous trucks are part of the future.

“It’s just a matter of time,” he said.

A Florida Uber driver who makes $3,000 a month to supplement her healing business said driving is fulfilling but a headache: 'I'm flying by the seat of the algorithm'

Hiedi Handford, 57, has driven long distances for as long as she can remember. She drove 120 miles round trip over a mountain pass to get to and from work in Montana from her home in the same town where the Unabomber lived.

When Handford, a mother of three who moved to Colorado and then South Florida for her medical consulting business, discovered she could get paid to drive, she started with Uber four years ago. It helps her supplement earnings from her business, but she's been increasingly frustrated by some aspects of the driving experience.

"What's frustrating about it is, as drivers, we have all the risks, all the responsibility," Handford said. "We are the face of these apps, and they're not paying us to be that."

Handford is one of nearly two dozen South Florida drivers with whom BI spoke during spring break . Many echoed that driving has been fulfilling and profitable during certain points of the year, though many drivers have increasingly turned their attention toward private rides , alternative driving platforms, or rides in less populated areas. Some have turned away from driving full-time and have looked toward other income sources.

"I don't know how these guys pay rent around here if they're doing this full-time," she said.

Driving for Uber in South Florida

Handford spent the first four decades of her life in Montana, where she lived in a town of 1,000 people. There weren't many jobs in her area, so she took a government job 60 miles away on mountainous roads.

She eventually started in the medical consulting field as a holistic healer. She spent a few years in Colorado, where she was an activist in the cannabis space, and she trained in how to work with cancer patients.

She moved to South Florida 10 years ago, moving to Fort Lauderdale . Given that her patients were scattered across South Florida , she figured that she could make money driving passengers en route to appointments.

"Uber was much more lucrative than it is now," Handford said. "Four years ago, I could go out and make $350 in a day in eight or nine hours. That's not even possible now on a full 12-hour run grinding. It doesn't happen because they're taking so much. I had a ride from the airport up to Boynton Beach. He paid $62 for that trip, and I was paid $26."

Now, she estimates she's driving about six hours a day between client visits, making $20 to $25 an hour. It helps her supplement her medical consulting appointments, for which she charges $125 an hour. She sometimes uses destination filters to get rides convenient with where she's heading to, though she said they often don't work during peak times. On weekends, she often drives full days.

"I really consider myself a daytime driver, so a lot of what I do are doctor's offices. Health insurance pays for transportation, and so a lot of these doctor's offices are sending cars to get people, and then they do the billing on it," she said. "Any day, you can go out and make money. It's just a matter of knowing where to drive and not being so picky. If you're cherry-picking every ride, then you're not going to make any money."

While she has considered taking private rides, which can pay much more than random Uber and Lyft rides , she said she'd rather avoid the added risk and responsibility.

"Insurance-wise, I would never recommend anybody ever do private rides with anybody because somewhere, somehow, something's going to happen," Handford said. "You're in South Florida. You can be the greatest driver in the world, but you're trusting everybody else out there, and they're going to drive into you one of these days."

Instead, she has prioritized driving for Jeevz , which allows her to drive luxury cars. She makes a consistent $17 an hour on the platform, though she gets significantly more tips from wealthier riders. She also drives in her passengers' personal vehicles, which avoids costs associated with maintenance and depreciation, and she said she feels safer driving as the passenger vetting process is much stricter. She has a few clients with whom she's built a strong rapport, and she takes about three to four Jeevz rides a week.

"It really strokes my happy bone because I am a car nut," Handford said. "I've always wanted to try these other cars because I like horsepower and all of that."

Strategies for driving part-time

She said she used to drive in Miami — about 45 minutes south — all the time, using Google Translate particularly for her Spanish-speaking passengers, though the language barrier has led to some mixups.

She said she's been frustrated by the toll road reimbursement process, given her area has begun putting in new toll roads that aren't all reflected on the Uber and Lyft apps. She said it sometimes takes weeks to get reimbursed, and sometimes her requests get denied even when she provides proof.

It also took her a while to learn how to navigate the area's drawbridges, which can often cause delays and has led passengers to cancel rides on her. "We have cars, not hovercrafts," she said.

Handford said she didn't prioritize spring break rides as much this year as she figured out more profitable driving strategies. She's focused on airport runs for tourists since she typically stays away from the beaches, where she can sit in traffic for over an hour. Still, navigating Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where the ride-hailing staging area is nearly three miles from the congested terminals, is sometimes not worth it.

She's also noticed fewer incentives during peak times, and she's found driving in touristy areas can be hit or miss for earnings.

Driving around Fort Lauderdale during peak vacation times has its headaches and frustrations, though she said she loves acting as a tour guide and also a "mom." She advises riders on how to remain alert and safe while still enjoying themselves, which has also helped her increase her tips.

"I like spring break because I get to share my community and where I live, and I'm really glad we have more of them in Fort Lauderdale because then I don't have to go so far to do that because I enjoy engaging with them," Handford said. "I really don't believe that the problems they had on South Beach were from the kids coming in for spring break. They want to come here, have a great time, usually get hammered, and fall face first in the sand."

Driving is especially fulfilling when she gets rewarded for going the extra mile to ensure her passengers' safety. She said many drivers in her area will let passengers off anywhere without thinking about their safety, and she's found joy in being a resource for members of her community, particularly medical patients.

Still, the $2,400 to $3,400 a month she makes from driving may not be the most economical going forward.

"With Uber, I average $20 to $25, and if I'm not averaging that, I turn it off and go home," Handford said. "I'm flying by the seat of the algorithm."

RIPTA says it needs 30 drivers to avoid service cuts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority said 30 bus drivers are the difference between keeping RIPTA the way it is or reducing service.

The transit agency heard from riders again on Monday on proposed route cuts and other service changes.

The likelihood of keeping most of the statewide bus system intact is looking more hopeful now than it did in February, when RIPTA sounded the alarm.

The starting pay for drivers was increased to $25.33, and it helped attract some new hires.

RIPTA Director of Service, Planning, and Scheduling Edward Brown said the agency needs another 30 drivers.

NBC 10 News asked if hiring 30 drivers would stop the proposed cuts.

“Yes, that’s true. We’d be able to cover all of the service without missing trips,” said Brown.

There will be a RIPTA Job fair on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its headquarters.

The RIPTA board will vote on the proposed cuts on April 25.

If approved, changes will go into effect in June.

RIPTA said since the increased wage announcement, it has received 25 applications for paratransit operators and 140 applications for paratransit CDL trainees.

Of those, RIPTA has hired seven individuals, with nine hires pending.
