6-venue World Championship in the United States will build towards an international series in 2024.

Fleet of 8 class 1 boats expected to compete in this season’s championship., new event in the city of sheboygan on lake michigan with season finale in miami..

Powerboat P1 has today announced the UIM Class 1 World Championship race calendar for the 2023 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin for the first time and returning to favourite locations in Florida and Indiana. A fleet of eight Class 1 boats is expected to compete in the six-venue championship from May through to September.

powerboat racing schedule

In October 2020, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) assigned to Powerboat P1 the international rights to Class 1 racing in an exclusive ten-year agreement that includes organisational and promotion rights to the world championship. However, with the pandemic seriously impacting the 2021 season by preventing overseas teams from traveling to the United States, it wasn’t until this year that P1 was able to action its plans to attract more race teams and grow the series through social media and building the worldwide television audience.

Racing will kick off at Cocoa Beach on Florida’s Atlantic Coast in late May, before moving to the Gulf Coast at the end of June when the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix will celebrate its 38 th  anniversary. In August the series will head north to Indiana for the Michigan City Great Lakes Grand Prix, and a new event in the Wisconsin city of Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan will host the Mercury Racing MidWest Challenge.

Featuring the top categories of U.S. powerboat racing including Class 1, the three-day festival is expected to attract more than thirty teams to race along the Sheboygan waterfront. In early September the Class 1 fleet will be back on the Gulf Coast in St. Petersburg, and P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala is in advanced discussions to stage a season finale in Miami. “We raced in this iconic city in 2018 and returning this year with the Class 1 boats would create an outstanding climax to the 2023 championship,” said Rangoonwala.

powerboat racing schedule

“As we look ahead to the 2023 season, I can confirm that both the M CON Racing Team and Sudrheim Offshore Racing will be joining the series to give us an international field of eight boats with teams representing Australia, Sweden, Norway and, of course, the United States,” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala. “The M CON team will compete in a fully branded Monster Energy boat. This new canopied Skater 438 catamaran is the first purpose-built Class 1 boat for more than a decade. With Sudrheim Racing flying the flag for Norway next year, we can look forward to another Scandinavian team battling for the world title.”

powerboat racing schedule

This season’s championship will build towards an international race calendar in 2024 with host venues in Scandinavia and the Middle East being added to the schedule. In five years’ time, the key goal in P1’s development plan is to have twelve Class 1 teams racing at ten international venues. “Our live streaming this season will be significantly enhanced by the introduction of a new timing system which will show boat positions, distances between boats, speeds and lap times as live graphics,” explained Rangoonwala.

“We’re on an exciting journey and our mantra is to take UIM Class 1 back to the pinnacle of offshore racing,”

added Rangoonwala.

Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix moves from July 4th weekend to September dates

F or thousands of locals and visitors, July 4 plans include sitting on the beach and watching high-power speed boats racing across the Sarasota Bay.

This year, families will have to change their schedule to see what has become a signature event for the Suncoast. For the first time in decades, the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Race will be held later in the year after it was moved to new fall dates.

It is a big change for the 40-year-old event and everyone involved.

"I started watching powerboat racing here in Sarasota as a kid. It's an iconic place for racers, for the race teams and everything so it's something we've been doing for many years here," said Joey Olivieri, a powerboat racer.

Olivieri, who is a Sarasota native, now owns his own boat and race team which is set up two years ago. He and his crew members must now adjust to the new racing calendar.

The Grand Prix will now be held on the weekend of September 13-15, after holding exclusively during the Independence Day holiday weekend in July.

"It's a tight schedule for us, especially towards the end of the season doing back-to-back races right before championship races. I have to look at it a little differently. I've got to be more prepared," Olivieri said.

Organizers of the event, Powerboat P1 and sponsors Visit Sarasota County hope the change will generate more business for local retailers, hotels and restaurants during a less busy off-season.

They also hope to reduce the pressure on local law enforcement who are overstretched and have to work several hours of overtime to cover multiple events in the county. There were also prevailing environmental factors and concerns that were taken into consideration to prompt the change.

"Having to work around the turtles and it was always a lot of moving pieces so hopefully will still be very cautious and aware of those things now. But I think the pressure will ease a little bit with it not being right in the middle of that in July," said Thomas Covington, commercial director for Powerboat P1.

"We know Fourth of July is a big weekend already where it draws visitors but we are hoping this event does the same thing here in September," said Nate Sweetman, sports marketing coordinator for Visit Sarasota.

The festivities for the new September power boat weekend will still include the Pit Party on the evening of Friday, Sept 13 at the Van Wezel parking lot.

For some locals though, the move to change the date takes away from what was until now a favorite highlight of the summer.

"Well, I'm a traditionalist and in addition to what would be a very patriotic holiday, the boat races added an awful lot to it and people would come into town specifically for that event," said Erik Kent, owner of Parker Robinson Boutique on Main Street.

For Olivieri, the date change is understandable and something he can adapt to as opposed to the other possible alternatives.

"I want to still race for many years to come here in Sarasota which is an iconic place for my hometown and I don't want to see it go away," he said.

Last year the Powerboat Grand Prix generated an estimated $5 Million in economic impact for Sarasota.

Visit Sarasota said it will continue providing grants and advertising for the racing event.

Official 2024 APBA Offshore National Series Schedule Robust

Between longtime events and new ones produced by Powerboat P1 and Race World Offshore , teams competing in the 2024 American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series have a diverse eight-event mix of venues and waterways to consider. This preseason has seen more last-minute shuffling than most—more specifically, the annual event at the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri to be produced by Powerboat P1 is officially part of the APBA series as well as the now five-event Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 World Championship Series.

Both Powerboat P1 and Race World Offshore are APBA member-organizations.

powerboat racing schedule

In addition to longstanding events such as Thunder On Cocoa Beach, the 2024 APBA Offshore National Championship Series includes first- and second year-events. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix .

Here’s a quick look at the APBA lineup for 2024:

April 27-28 —Marathon, Fla. (RWO) May 17-19 —Cocoa Beach, Fla. (P1) May 31-June 1 —Lake Ozark, Mo. (P1) June 7-9 —Ocean City, Md. (RWO) August 9-11 —Sheboygan, Wis. (P1) September 13-15 —Sarasota, Fla. (P1) September 27-29 —Clearwater, Fla. (RWO) October 18-20 —St. Petersburg, Fla. (P1)

Neither part of the ABPA Offshore National Championship Series nor the UIM Class 1 World Championship Series, the RWO Key West World Championship is set for November 3-10 in Key West, Fla.

“The sites have continued to increase both in numbers and geographically,” explained Rich Luhrs, the chairman of the APBA Offshore Racing Commission. “Progress has been made in addressing the ‘all-Florida’ issue with further northeast and Midwest sites on tap for 2025. In fact, there is room for one more event on the schedule in July of this year.

powerboat racing schedule

The Super Cat class likely will have 10-plus teams competing this season.

“Boat count has climbed, race sites are increasing and true progress continues to occur,” he continued. “We still have significant work to do on developing regional and divisional events, especially on the West Coast.”

As in years past, the Super Cat and Super Stock classes will have their own internal series of races selected by the team owners. The Super Cat owners released their schedule earlier this month. According Super Stock-class representative Ryan Beckley, the Super Stock owners are hoping to complete their internal schedule today.

The Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix is one of the most popular attractions for the whole family in Central Florida and draws the top race teams in the World to compete in various classes with Class 1 reaching speeds over 175 mph.

In addition to soaking up the vibe of a Powerboat P1 race filled with excitement, action and speed, spectators can also take in the atmosphere of the East Coast’s surfing capital.

Due to its warm weather, steady waves and world-class surf shops, Cocoa Beach welcomes around 2.5 million visitors each year , making it a top tourist destination. Once the racing is over, The Cover will be a popular destination, with Fish Lips Waterfront Bar & Grill on everyone’s list.

Class 1 is the premier class of offshore powerboat racing in the world and is considered to be one of the most spectacular marine motorsports.

A Class 1 race boat has twin inboard 1100 horse power engines.  Each boat has a two-man crew: the driver and throttleman. They work closely with their pit crews to decide the race set-up: the type of propeller required for the conditions, gear ration settings, the amount of fuel needed and race tactics.

Ready, Set, Race! Thunder on Cocoa Beach returns for 14th year

"thunder on cocoa beach" powerboat races offer superstar racing teams, speeds up to 175 mph and lots of thrills..

The forecast calls for constant thunder from May 16 to 19 in Cocoa Beach, but this has nothing to do with weather. Instead, it's all about the sound of the entries in the Thunder on Cocoa Beach Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix.

It’s been 14 years since four local buddies who love powerboats created “Thunder on Cocoa Beach,” a four-day event all about awe-inspiring racing vessels. Their lightbulb moment proved fruitful and the event, also known as "ToCB," has become the premier offshore race event in Brevard County.

The racing action, which takes place offshore from Coconuts on the Beach in the south to Alan Shepard Park in the north, is wrapped up in an enticing package of parties, concerts, VIP happenings, music, vendors and oodles of merch.

As for the racing, ToCB attracts the top race teams in the world at speeds that head north of 175 mph.

Attendees have the option of enjoying the action on several levels, from general admission at $79 on Saturday and $99 on Sunday, to the full throttle Class 1 Behind the Scenes Experience. That ticket includes an all-access, four-day premium pass that, for $1,000, grants participants private access to parties, events, private tours, driver meet-and-greets and photo ops, premium food and drinks, personal hospitality service, VIP parking passes and entrance into the exclusive P1 race tent for primo race viewing Saturday and Sunday.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

In between the two extremes are the two-person loungers ($250) and the two-person cabanas ($350). The two-person lounger provides a dedicated spot to watch the action without the need for lugging chairs and umbrellas, plus it includes table service. The two-person private cabanas includes two canvas loungers, a cocktail table UV cabana shade, dedicated food and drink service, towels service, two drink tokens and a plate of food for each person. Both loungers and cabanas also include access to the VIP Chalet and its perks.

ToCB benefits I am a Freedom Fighter , a local nonprofit founded by Jenny Pruett, longtime fan of ToCB and owner of Cocoa Beach’s Juice ‘n Java Café . Pruett spends a considerable part of her days raising awareness of the issue of human trafficking both around the world and in Brevard. All proceeds from the purchase of the Ultimate Freedom VIP Experience will go directly to fighting human trafficking worldwide.

“Human trafficking continues to be on the rise not only in Florida, but in the U.S. and globally,” Pruett noted. “The awareness of this continues to be the top priority for the Freedom Fighter organization."

"I started the Freedom Fighter movement to bring light to the victims," she said. "The Freedom Fighter movement will hopefully spark something deep inside all of us to carry a message of hope to those who need to hear it. We need to educate as many people as possible to the massive humanitarian crisis we face today and enlist as many as possible in the army.”
