Cape Cod Sailing Charters

Slide gracefully along beautiful Pleasant Bay and admire the spectacular scenery aboard  MARIA .  Whether you’re simply looking to sit back and relax, a first-timer hoping to learn or a seasoned pro who wants to take the helm, our captains will help ensure a memorable experience for your entire group!

A few reasons to choose MARIA for your next Cape Cod Sailing Charter:

–  “Just right” size.   Most sailboat charters are limited to carrying just 6 passengers at a time.  Beyond that you’ll have to elbow your way onto boats sailing with 50 people or more.  MARIA is unique – small enough to remain intimate but large enough to still accommodate a medium sized group!

–  We sail in protected waters.   Pleasant Bay offers wonderful scenery and exhilarating sailing with less exposure to bad weather and rough ocean conditions.  Our sails carry virtually zero risk of seasickness, so feel free to bring the entire family!

–  Comfort and safety.   All of our passengers sit inside the dry, secure and comfortable confines of MARIA’S  expanded cockpit.  Customers need not sit uncomfortably on the cabin roof or along the rails, which is common aboard boats this size.

–  Upscale Setting.  Customers enjoy complimentary parking at the world-class Wequassett Resort & Golf Club.  The resort property features several restaurants and sweeping waterfront views.  Also available is the Wequassett’s exclusive On-The-Water catering menu.

Join us to create a unique and lasting memory of your trip Down Cape!

MARIA began life as a 1966 Glander Tavana, originally built and designed for the shallow waters of the Florida Keys.  With the help of local builders in Chatham, her hull was stripped bare and her cockpit expanded to create a one-of-a kind USCG Inspected 12 passenger daysailer.

PRIVATE CHARTER RATES:

1-6 Passengers              $600.00

Additional Passengers       $75.00 each

Max of 12 passengers

Kick off the day with a relaxing Private Day Sail – the perfect choice for intimate gatherings, family groups and even Bachelorette Parties.

Morning sails typically offer lighter winds and are perfect for those looking to escape the heat of the day.  If you crave more wind, an afternoon sail will typically be your best bet!  Local winds tend to build in the late morning and stabilize in the afternoons.

This is a 2hr private tour – for you and your group only (plus one captain).  Please be sure to read through the FAQ’s located at the bottom of this page.

  • Please refer to our online calendar for exact departure times and live availability.
  • All sailing charters include the services of a licensed captain and complimentary bottled water.  See the FAQ’s at the bottom of this page to read our food/beverage policies.
  • Catering service is also available through the Wequassett Resort – see menu link below.  Reply to your confirmation email with your order at least 48hrs before departure and we’ll take care of the rest!

Private Sunset Sail

1-6 Passengers              $750.00

Additional Passengers        $75.00 each

Sit back and relax as the summer sun slowly descends over Pleasant Bay.  Undoubtedly our most romantic departure time, Private Sunset Sails are perfect for special occasions, anniversary’s and family gatherings.

Sunset Sail availability can be limited at peak times.  We recommend booking early as these often sell out!  If your desired date is unavailable, consider one of our Sunset Harbor Cruises instead.  We run several powerboats each evening but only the one sailboat!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your cancellation policy?

For a full refund, a minimum of 7 days notice is required.

Cancellations made less than 7 days in advance – but more than 48 hrs before departure time – will be charged 50%.

No-shows and cancellations made 48 hrs or less before departure time will be charged full price.

What if there is bad weather?

Safety is ultimately our top priority.  We will not operate in hazardous weather conditions such as heavy rain, thick fog, high winds or thunder and lightning.  If severe weather cancels your reservation we will make every effort to reschedule for another day.  Otherwise, a full refund will be issued.

However, no guarantees can be made that every part of every day will be perfectly sunny.  So we will operate as usual in overcast conditions, light fog and in intermittent sprinkles.  Guests should dress appropriately for changeable weather and bring a positive attitude!

The final decision on weather related cancellations rests with the captain and reservations should be considered upheld unless we contact you directly.

How early should I show up for my reservation?

To leave enough time for our check-in procedure, we recommend your party arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time.  Leave yourself some margin for traffic or parking related delays, pre-departure bathroom stops, etc.

There will be no refunds or credits for customers arriving late.  Trips are scheduled multiple times per day and to ensure that all of our reservations are honored, your tour will still have to return at its regularly scheduled time.

What should I wear? What should I bring?

WHAT TO BRING:

  • A valid form of ID (only necessary for the person who has made the reservation).
  • If your tour/rental has not been prepaid, you will need to bring a form of payment.  We accept all major credit cards and/or cash.  Guests of the Wequassett Resort can also charge to their room account if they prefer.
  • An additional layer of clothing.  Even if its t-shirt weather in your driveway, always assume it will be cooler on the water.  For shorter tours, a sweatshirt or a light jacket is often enough.
  • Please wear boat shoes, non-scuffing white-soled sneakers or relax and go barefoot.
  • Snacks/beverages.  Please see additional FAQ’s for restrictions.
  • Sunscreen (non-spray only).
  • Polarized sunglasses.

DO NOT BRING:

  • Spray sunscreen.
  • Marking shoes or sandals.
  • Hard alcohol.
  • Cigarettes/cigars/vapes (no smoking allowed).
  • Drugs of any kids.
  • Beer bottles or glass containers.  (Wine bottles are fine.  Beer in cans is also fine).
  • Anything that can easily blow away.
  • Dogs or other pets.
  • Large coolers.  Each of our vessels already has a large cooler onboard.  Feel free to bring a small cooler and small bags.
  • Large meals.  It just doesn’t work well on an open, moving boat.  Keep food/snacks simple!

May food and drinks be brought on board?

All of our trips include complimentary bottled water.  Additionally, customers are welcome to bring their own snacks and beverages.

Please remember that you will be eating/drinking on a boat that is moving, open to the wind and may or may not have a table or cup holders (we operate several vessels and each is equipped differently).  Our advice is to KEEP IT SIMPLE and don’t bring anything that you aren’t prepared to eat in your lap.  Smaller snacks and finger foods are easiest and less likely to stain your clothing and our upholstery.

For adults over 21, reasonable amounts of beer and wine are also allowed.

RESTRICTIONS:

  • Leave the red wine at home.  On a moving boat it will stain clothing and upholstery.
  • No hard alcohol.
  • Please opt for cans and minimize glass containers in general.  Wine bottles are allowed but no beer bottles.  We will provide plastic cups if needed.

Any excessive use of alcohol will result in the immediate termination of the trip with no recourse.

What happens if my group size changes after booking?

After booking, don’t worry if your party grows or shrinks.  Your final rate will be adjusted based on the headcount that shows up on the day of your charter.  Please remember that our sailboat can accommodate a maximum of 12 passengers regardless of age/size per Coast Guard regulations.  Just don’t show up with 13 and everything will be fine!

We have a group of 12 plus a baby. Can we squeeze onto your sailboat?

Unfortunately, no.  Each of our vessels is rated for a certain capacity by the United States Coast Guard and the USCG does not differentiate between children and adults.  A 12 person capacity means twelve human beings – regardless of age.

Please note that we can accommodate groups of up to 18 on our largest motor boat.

Will I get seasick?

Tours that stay within the protected waters of Pleasant Bay carry virtually zero risk of seasickness.  The swell and chop that you might encounter on the open Atlantic Ocean or Nantucket Sound is simply not present within the bay.

Nevertheless, concerned passengers are welcome to experiment with over-the-counter remedies containing ginger, which has been shown to calm an upset stomach.  Consult your physician if you have any further questions or concerns.

Are there any age restrictions or physical restrictions?

Our sailing charters are appropriate for all ages and have no age restrictions.

Those with mobility issues must be able to walk down the resort dock (pictured on our About Us page) and step up into the vessel.  Rarely is this an issue, but it should be mentioned.

Are dogs allowed on your charters?

We do not allow dogs on our sailboat.

However, in certain circumstances, we may allow dogs on some of our motor boat tours.  See our Harbor & Seal Tour, Beachcomber Tour and Sunset Cruise items for more information.

Do you provide life jackets for children?

Yes, we have life jackets for all shapes and sizes (even infants).  While we recommend that everybody wear a life jacket on our boats, by law only those 12 and younger have to wear one at all times.  Your boat will have enough life jackets on board for everybody in your group.  Younger children are welcome to bring their own life jacket if they are more comfortable, provided it is Coast Guard approved (no arm floaties, please!).

sailboat in cape cod

The schooner, Liberté, is based on Spa Creek in Annapolis, Maryland. During the summer months, she’s docked at the Patriot Party Boats pier in Falmouth harbor in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Captain Chris and Jane had this vessel built just for them.

The original hull design by Dudley Dix is a Hout Bay 70, a two-masted gaff-rigged schooner intended as a heavy but fast offshore cruiser. Many alterations were made to the design, including adding a spoon bow, scaling down the lines to meet U.S. Coast Guard parameters, redesigning the deck layout and adjusting the rig to a three-masted staysail design.

Offering what is arguably some of the best sailing in New England, Cape Cod is made for exploring by boat. Hop on board your own Sailo yacht charter and soak up the good life in this Massachusetts hotspot.

There’s a lot of fun to be had in the waters around Cape Cod. This spit of land at the far end of Massachusetts is home to many pretty villages, incredible beaches and fantastic coastline. And, as the site of the arrival of the Pilgrim fathers, the whole area is awash with history too.

Cape Cod boat rentals come in a variety of shapes and sizes. For those whose dream is to hit the ocean in a classic monohull yacht, you’ll have plenty to choose from with Sailo. If you prefer a spot of fishing, or perhaps a motor yacht charter to get around the coastline then you’ll also find some great options in our boat rental inventory. Exploring the coast of Cape Cod is easy to do and a great way to find your own quiet beach or village and get away from the crowds.

Some of the best things to do in Cape Cod include saltwater or freshwater fishing, enjoying a sunset cruise or a day trip to admire the coastal scenery from the deck of your yacht charter. Whenever you’re heading to Cape Cod, take a look at Sailo and find your perfect boat rental.

Fishing trips in Cape Cod, MA

Keen fishermen will love getting out on a boat with their rods in Cape Cod. Pick one of our fishing boat charters on Sailo and enjoy a day on the sea casting your line for some of the teeming marine life around these parts. If you’re lucky, you'll get to pull in some striped bass, bluefish, flounders, blackfish and false albacore (little tunny). You don’t need to go far out to sea to get a bite on your line either. Fishing in Cape Cod is always a rewarding experience, no matter what you catch…

Just south of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is well known as a sedate getaway for people from across the country and the world. As it is only accessible by boat or aircraft, what better way to arrive than on your own Sailo boat rental from Cape Cod? Martha’s Vineyard is blessed with some fantastic beaches, great fresh food and farm produce and hiking or cycling trails across the island. Visit Martha’s Vineyard either as a day trip from the mainland, or stay overnight if you’ve chosen a multi day yacht charter.

We mentioned that there is a wealth of history across Cape Cod, and one of the best things to do in Cape Cod is explore with your own boat rental. Hyannis Port is a six acre compound owned by the Kennedy Family, which you can see from the water as you pass. Provincetown is home to the Pilgrim Monument, a 252 ft granite tower that looks over the surrounding area and is visible from miles around. And of course, what visit to Massachusetts is complete without a visit to Plymouth Rock, the site of the Mayflower’s arrival in the New World.

Sailing Provincetown Harbor

cape-cod-boat-rentals-sailing-provincetown-sailo

At the far end of the spit of Cape Cod, Provincetown is a spectacular sailing location. Pick up your sailboat rental in Cape Cod and enjoy the views of the Race Point lighthouse as you head out into the ocean. Provincetown might be quite remote at the far end of Cape Cod, but it makes a great base for a day trip on a yacht charter. You’ll get to witness the incredible and unspoilt scenery including the many nature reserves and miles of sandy beaches. If you’re lucky you might even spot a friendly pod of dolphins or other marine life as you sail the seas on your boat charter.

Sail the Cape Cod Canal

cape-cod-boat-rentals-sailing-sailo

Separating Falmouth from Cape Cod Bay, the Canal is a man made waterway that is a great way to access either Buzzards Bay or arrive in Cape Cod Bay itself. Sail past sleepy towns and rural landscapes, enjoying the slow pace of life in this part of the world. Some of the historic sights include the Cape Cod Railway Bridge, which is a vertical raising bridge that can be lifted when ships pass.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Cape Cod Boat Shrink Wrap Recycling Program Diverts Valuable Plastics from Landfills

Image is of covered boats with a sunset sky. Text reads: Cape Cod Boat Shrink Wrap Recycling, April 1st to June 30th, 2024. Bring clean, rolled wrap to transfer stations in Bourne, Chatham, Eastham, Falmouth and Wellfleet. More info can be found at the link http://seagrant.whoi.edu/shrinkwrap.

B oaters and marinas benefit from an easy and convenient recycling program run by Cape Cod Cooperative Extension and WHOI Sea Grant.

March 18, 2024 (Barnstable, MA) – This spring, boaters across Cape Cod have easy access to plastic wrap recycling at five town transfer stations, running from April 1 to June 30. No fees or stickers are necessary for drop-off. Locations include Bourne Int. Solid Waste Management Facility, Chatham Transfer Station, Eastham Transfer Station, Falmouth Waste Management Facility, and Wellfleet Transfer/Recycling Center. Operating hours vary for each location, ensuring convenience for all.

The Cape Cod shrink wrap recycling program preserves the region’s coastal environment and reduces waste. It is a partnership between Barnstable County’s Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Sea Grant, and the towns of Bourne, Falmouth, Chatham, Eastham, and Wellfleet.

“As a coastal community, the environment is a high priority in Barnstable County,” says Kari Parcell, the regional waste reduction coordinator for Cape Cod Cooperative Extension. “We’re grateful to the towns and their staff for their time and willingness to cover the costs, serve as host locations for the program, and help keep Cape Cod a beautiful place to live.”

The collections, which are located at the five towns’ transfer stations, run from April 1 to June 30. There is no fee or sticker required for residents to drop-off boat shrink wrap, but the wrap must be properly prepared for recycling or it will not be accepted. Instructions, collection locations, hours, and program information can be found at http://seagrant.whoi.edu/shrinkwrap .

Boat shrink wrap cannot be put into curbside recycling carts and bins.  To be recycled, shrink wrap must be free of plastic strapping, ties, vents or zippered doors, which, if left on, will contaminate the recycling stream. Residents should make sure their wrap is free of these items before bringing it to the town waste management facility or risk being turned away.

“Strapping, ropes and other non-shrink wrap materials can cause problems when we take the material to the recycler,” says Stephanie Murphy of WHOI Sea Grant. “The good news is there’s an easy way to take the wrap off the boat while removing the strapping and other contaminants at the same time. Just cut the plastic wrap around the belly of the boat: the straps fall away and the plastic can then be folded and rolled for recycling.”

A how-to video is available on the WHOI Sea Grant website along with other information about how to prepare the wrap for recycling. The site also includes a video describing how to re-use shrink wrap for multiple seasons – something boaters may not know is possible and can save them money.

Cape Cod boatyards and marinas interested in recycling shrink wrap can contact the program organizers at [email protected] to inquire about participation. In 2023, the Cape Cod shrink wrap recycling partnership successfully collected and recycled 22 tons of shrink wrap, facilitated by a materials recycling facility (MRF) operated by Republic Services in Brockton, which baled and sold the material on the commodities market. The participating towns covered the transportation costs to the MRF and recycling fees.

More information about the Cape Cod Shrink Wrap Recycling Program is available at http://seagrant.whoi.edu/shrinkwrap .

Seashore says Duck Harbor flooding not associated with Herring River Restoration project

WELLFLEET — Some things in this world can be controlled, while others are driven by the powerful and unpredictable forces of nature.

This dueling dynamic is playing out in Wellfleet , where, about a mile apart, the incremental and carefully monitored Herring River Restoration project is underway near the unbridled and constantly changing situation at the Duck Harbor overwash .

While these two situations are distinct, there is a connection, and it can be a bit tricky to sort it all out.

"I think one of the confusing things is the area here at Duck Harbor was always connected to the (Herring River) historically, so it is incorporated into the restoration," said Geoff Sanders, chief of natural resources for the Cape Cod National Seashore . "It was always a plan that this area would be restored."

But the overwash at Duck Harbor wasn't part of the long-planned Herring River Restoration project.

"The plan was for the restoration to occur through the river and not through Duck Harbor," said Sanders. "The Duck Harbor (overwash) event, that wasn't planned."

Water from Cape Cod Bay has been surging inland at Duck Harbor on robust high tides since about January 2021. Coastal flooding, often associated with storms, intensify the effect, bringing more water and more trouble upstream. In January and again in March, the water flooded roads in several spots in Wellfleet, forcing closures that lasted for days and isolating residents of Bound Brook Island.

Over the past few years, saltwater intrusion from the overwash also killed vegetation in a forested area behind Duck Harbor Beach. The Seashore and Ducks Unlimited partnered on a project to remove the dead vegetation from a roughly 120-acre area, to "restore conditions favorable for salt marsh vegetation," according to a release from the Seashore.

Meanwhile, work on the Herring River Restoration project has continued, most visibly in the area of the Chequessett Neck Road dike. A temporary bridge built next to the dike was tentatively scheduled to open on March 20. The temporary bridge will handle vehicle traffic, allowing the dike to be replaced.

"The dike and the three 6-foot-wide culverts are being replaced with a new 165-foot-wide bridge and electronically controlled tide gates that can be vertically opened," a release from the Seashore said. "The new bridge and incremental opening of the gates will allow for the gradual transition from restricted tidal flushing to conditions more closely resembling the Herring River’s natural flow prior to the dike’s construction."

Jay Norton, Wellfleet Department of Public Works director said road flooding from the Duck Harbor overwashes spurred questions about whether there might be a connection to the Herring River Restoration project.

"We did hear some folks asking whether the clearing (at Duck Harbor) and all the bridge work, all the components of the restoration project, if that had any impact on the flooding, and the answer to that is 'no,'" said Norton. "It's an independent event, it's independently occurring erosion that occurred and that's why the overwash happened."

A release from the Cape Cod National Seashore put it this way: "The flooding observed at Duck Harbor is not associated with the Herring River Restoration project. The repeated overwash events into Duck Harbor are the result of rising sea levels in Cape Cod Bay and are unrelated to the pro-active, deliberate plan for restoring tidal flow to the Herring River at Chequessett Neck, which has been fully reviewed, vetted, and permitted by numerous local, state, and federal regulatory and funding partners."

Tim Smith, Cape Cod National Seashore restoration ecologist, was asked if the uncontrollable influx of water at Duck Harbor could add a mystery factor that could affect the Herring River Restoration project.

"There's definitely some unknowns about how it will all relate together," said Smith. "But the important thing is when the (new) bridge is open, the water that comes in (at Duck Harbor) will flow much faster into the river and then out into the harbor."

Smith said that salt water vegetation is already returning to the cleared area behind Duck Harbor Beach, which could eventually curb the effects of the overwashes. Over a period of years, salt marsh grasses are predicted to grow in the area.

"Salt marshes tend to slow down water," said Smith. "They'll build up peat that absorbs water as the tides come in."

Flooding associated with the Duck Harbor overwash will be alleviated by road improvements planned as part of the Herring River Restoration project, including "increasing culvert size and raising the elevation of the roads," said Norton.

But the planned road improvements are "probably one to two years out," according to Norton, leaving homes in the Bound Brook Island area subject to flooding-related access problems in the near future. During January flooding, Wellfleet firefighters used a boat to get a Bound Brook Island resident and her dog off the island.

So Norton is looking at near-term remediation options to fill the gap until the Herring River Restoration project road improvements are in place. "We have to look at some interim measures to keep that access to those houses," he said.

Cape Cod Fishing Report- March 14, 2024

Big largemouth bass take XL baits in shallow ponds, and trout fishing with lures and bait has been excellent in the kettle lakes after the recent rounds of stocking.

Cape Cod Fishing Report

Fishy things are happening. And by things , I mean each day there are new signs of spring in the air and in the water.

As nice as it may be to spend winters down south in Florida or the Carolinas, this is arguably the best time of year to be a true northeasterner. The budding trees and plants, the longer, warmer days, the impending arrival of ospreys and herring, trout being stocked, and the ponds coming to life before stripers return— they are all rewards for enduring another northeast winter.   Late last week, reports of herring in Rhode Island and portions of the south coast of Massachusetts made their way to anglers on the Cape. I heard of scattered schools of scout herring in places as close as Wareham, but I’ve yet to see any in our local rivers. One night earlier this week, I headed to the Quashnet and Coonamesset Rivers in hopes of discovering some herring. No scouts yet, but I did notice small groups of minnows in the rivers, which is more bait than I’ve seen in shallow water all winter. That was enough for me to buckle up the waders, tie on a wake bait, and march into a local bog pond that is connected to a herring run.

As I trudged in, more minnows, and what looked to be some juvenile largemouth, scattered from the shallow cover of overhanging branches and weeds. A promising sign. I even spotted a handful of bluegills sitting over sandy patches of bottom around my ankles.

sailboat in cape cod

It was glass calm, and the peepers that I heard chirping earlier in the evening had stopped singing their spring songs. For a few minutes, it seemed like the pond was going to be dead despite how much bait I was seeing. Then, the unmistakable slurp of a bass interrupted the eerie stillness, my line jolted, and a few moments later, a dinky largemouth was in my grasp. The first “topwater” fish of the year was a small one and left much to be desired.

sailboat in cape cod

About 30 minutes later, I swapped to a 3/4-ounce FishLab Bio-Shad wakebait and another fish took the jointed wakebait as it crept over a channel lined by tall grasses. It was a long and skinny 3-pound class fish, which lifted my spirits.

sailboat in cape cod

After the commotion caused by the second fish, the action died off for another 30 minutes or so. Before packing it up for the night, I tied on the original wakebait that landed the first small bass and managed to hook into one more quality largemouth. This one had a gut and had clearly been eating well.

sailboat in cape cod

Few things get the heart racing like a wakebait being suddenly inhaled toward the end of a retrieve on a dark, glassy pond. It’s a great way to get the juices flowing for early-season striper fishing in the estuaries that happens about a month from now.

OTW’s Anthony DeiCicchi and Matt Ryan also capitalized on the nighttime bass bite that kicked off this week by splashing the Bass Raider in another herring run pond. They fished wakebaits and swimbaits for several hours last night, with Matt landing a small bass on a jointed wake and Anthony tying into a 5-pound class fish on a Pat’s perch-patterned swimbait. They stuck both of their fish on back to back casts in the same spot after a few fish-less hours.

sailboat in cape cod

Can we proclaim this the official start of the pre-spawn largemouth bass season? I think so.

And largemouth bass aren’t the only ones on the prowl these days. Smallmouth bass are beginning to put on the feed bag too. Over the weekend, OTW’s Robbie Tartaglia discovered a lights-out jig bite in a small kettle pond on the other side of the big ditch. He and his friend had smallies to 2 pounds aggressively swiping at finesse jigs, which is arguably more exciting than nighttime fishing for largemouth.

sailboat in cape cod

Many bass fisherman agree that pound for pound, smallmouth bass fight harder than largemouth bass. With the right tackle, a good daytime smallie bite is hard to beat. And while the smalljaws may not be as active in larger kettle lakes just yet—or at least not readily available from shore—there are other angling opportunities to be had in the kettle lakes.

» Trout Stocking Report: Click here to check out which ponds have been stocked in your area

Connor Swartz at Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay  said the trout fishing has been really good now that most, if not all the ponds around Cape and Plymouth, have been stocked. They have a revolving door with anglers getting bait for trout and others picking up last-minute bass gear this week. Additionally, Connor and Bull said that herring are packed into the rivers around Wareham and Middleboro, so there is potential for some quality holdover stripers to be caught over the next few weeks. Bull said the earliest he’s ever seen herring on Cape was last year, when herring arrived in force during the 3rd week of April. Water temps are still pretty cold right now in comparison to last year, so we can expect the herring to show on Cape around mid April, although a few scouts might continue to trickle in over the next couple weeks. Stop by the shop for your trout and bass fishing needs this weekend.

Evan at Eastman’s Sport and Tackle in Falmouth  told me he’s been busier with the warm weather this week. He sold a bunch of big shiners to Cam yesterday, which we used for trout and bass, and only ended up with some finicky brown trout and a couple overzealous yellow perch. He still has 6 or 7 dozen left and should be getting more shiners in soon, plus he’s been busy restocking the freshwater lure department with jerkbaits, Rapalas, wakebaits, soft plastics, spinners and more. If you’re fishing the kettle ponds and bass ponds around the Upper Cape, swing by and pick up what you need on the way to the spot.

Lee at Riverview Bait and Tackle in South Yarmouth reported much better fishing activity this week in their neck of the woods. With the mild temps and trout ponds being stocked, there’s been an uptick in interest and more people getting outside. Lee said they’re selling equal parts lures and live bait to the trout crowd, but they have not seen as much interest in bass just yet. A few more warm days and some of the larger ponds will start to see more activity in the way of largemouth and smallmouth.

Christian at Sports Port Bait and Tackle in Hyannis  said he’s sold at least 6 dozen shiners over the past couple days, along with gold spoons and spinners being the top selections for artificials. They did a 2nd round of trout stocking this week in some ponds so he went out yesterday and did some fly fishing first thing in the morning, throwing green wooly buggers, leeches and midge patterns, but to no avail. Christian also mentioned they had one customer come in on Sunday morning who had limited out on trout using big shiners in the snotty wind and weather conditions. He said he even caught a couple holdovers with the recent stockies too. On another note, yellow perch just spawned, or are spawning now, so they are fattened up with eggs and will aggressively strike jerkbaits, soft plastics, perch-colored Rapalas and live baits like shiners and nightcrawlers. Something to keep in mind when you are bass fishing too; bass will gorge on young of year yellow perch and the big ones will even gobble up a full-grown perch.

Last weekend, at the New England Saltwater Fishing Expo hosted by RISAA, I touched base with a few of our local captains who have been hard at work preparing their boats and filling their schedules for the upcoming saltwater season.

Captain Cam Faria of Cambo Charters reported that he’s got some work being done on his boat to make it more comfortable this season, and he plans to start charters around mid to late April once the first stripers come in around Buzzards Bay. He’s already booking trips, so visit his website to learn more or just give him a call to lock in some dates.

Captain Ross of Cape Cod Charter Guys in Bourne reported that they are going to start fishing on May 1 this year, and man was he eager to get out on the water. They’ll start the season with stripers and chase just about anything once the saltwater season is in full swing, so contact him to get a few trips on the books before the best dates fill up.

Cape cod fishing forecast.

Pickerel and perch, bass and trout. There are plenty of options in the ponds this week. The weekend weather forecast, initially, looked grim. Sunday might be a wash, but don’t count out fishing through the snotty conditions, as the best bass or trout fishing often occurs with the wind in your face and a couple rain layers on.

If you’re trout fishing with lures this week, try the classics like gold spoons and spinners, or suspending jerkbaits from brands like Rapala or Baker Lures. If using bait, nightcrawlers or live shiners will do just fine. Generally, you’ll want smaller shiners for trout and bigger ones for bass. But in ponds with holdover trout, those large shiners could be the ticket to a trophy.

Bass fishing in the late afternoon or evening is the most productive window. The shallow ponds warm up all day in the sun, so feeding activity will peak around dusk or dark. At night, think big swimbaits, wakebaits and gliders on a slow retrieve. During the day, jerkbaits, soft-plastic paddletails, smaller jointed swimbaits, swim jigs, lipless crankbaits and small spinnerbaits or chatterbaits should bring a few fish to hand.

Don’t be surprised if you run into a bycatch of pickerel and yellow perch on the bass ponds. They’re both spawning right about now if they haven’t done so already. Once pickerel spawn, they feed aggressively for about a month, and then I never really catch a ton of them again until November. If you want to boost your odds of hooking a trophy pickerel or even a big bass, use yellow-perch-colored lures. I don’t usually harp on color too much when it comes to freshwater, but perch spawns put a ton of small, gold baitfish in the water, so yellow or gold Rapalas, spoons and spinners get noticed and can lead to some very successful days on the water.

Wherever fishing finds you this week, have fun, respect your surroundings (and other anglers), stay safe, and fish hard. Thanks for reading.
