If you want pieceful , calm holiday - this is your place We enjoyed this quite , isolated atmosphere

Close to the airport for our early flight. Beautiful grounds and views from our large balcony. The bedding was delightful--- crisp, soft sheets and even a feather pillow in the bunch. All the staff was friendly, polite and helpful. We had a delicious al fresco dinner. The scabbard fish Madeira style was wonderful.

The most accommodating staff, beautiful sea view room, secluded pool at the ocean side.

My husband and I loved this place! The highlight was spending our last day in Madeira at the ocean pool. It was amazing and the best pool we’ve ever been in. Would definitely stay here again.

The hotel far exceeded my expectations. This is a very special boutique property. Very few rooms, you feel tucked away in a secret enclave. The rooms are so comfortable and huge, immaculately clean. Balconies are large and the view is to die for. It's lovely to walk through the garden or along the waterfront in the mornings and evenings after dinner. Restaurant is delightful and the food is delicious. We didn't have a bad meal and we ate all our dinners there. I really didn't want to leave. Though it's near the airport we never were bothered by noise. It was amazingly quiet and serene.

SANTA CRUZ >> As part of an annual tradition to usher in the start of the sailing season, the Santa Cruz Yacht Club held this year’s Commodore’s Regatta on Saturday afternoon. With flat, clear conditions and strong wind whipping across the race course — set between Capitola and Natural Bridges — 31 boats of various designs trimmed their sails and went into full tilt as they careened across the water. The Commodore’s Regatta drew especially zealous crowds to the harbor as it coincided with the 90th anniversary of the Santa Cruz Yacht Club.

The club house filled with about 250 people after the race, where the revelers enjoyed tacos, cocktails and nautical tales. Amongst the attendees were 24 past commodores who served at the club dating back to 1965 — the year the original, quaint club house was relocated from the Santa Cruz Wharf to its current location.

The oldest commodore to attend was Peter Young, an 86-year-old World War II veteran who served as commodore in ’65 and was instrumental in relocating the club house to its current location.

The party also enjoyed a visit from Congressman Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, who said he came to pay tribute to the yacht club’s long legacy in Santa Cruz.

“It’s great to come and be able to celebrate an entity that’s been around for 90 years,” Panetta said. “It’s a huge accomplishment, but also what the yacht club has contributed to the community — not just for the people who sail, but for the people who live around here. You just walk in there, and you can feel the collegiality, the sense of community people have.”

The current commodore, Joe Altman, said that celebrating the club’s 90th birthday was an opportunity to share time with people whose love for sailing and the ocean has helped to define Santa Cruz.

“The club comes from pretty humble beginnings back in ’28,” said Altman. “I’d like to think that 90 years later it’s still a pretty humble, unpretentious club. This is Santa Cruz, we’re not really a blue blazer yacht club, we’re more T-shirts, shorts, and flip flops.” For the anniversary celebration, former commodores did wear blue blazers.

Altman also recounted parts of Santa Cruz’s history of experimental boat building, home to the likes of Bill Lee, aka “The Wizard,” who designed the 68-foot experimental racing boat “Merlin.” In 1977, it was Merlin that broke the TransPac record for fastest sail across the Pacific Ocean by 22 hours, and then held the record for 20 years, said Altman.

“Santa Cruz has an incredible, rich history of boat building and in the 1970s we became the forefront for the go-fast, ultralight displacement hulls,” he said. “It really changed the whole aspect of boat building.”

In celebration of the numerous, high performance and beautiful sail boats that have been designed and built in Santa Cruz, the yacht club will hold the second “Made in Santa Cruz Race Week Regatta,” to be held May 19-28.

Sailor Steve Niemann — who served as commodore in 2010 — raced aboard “The Perfect Thirty Six” and came in at second place in their division.

“It was a great race — a lot of wind, and it was terrific fun,” he said.

In regard to the yacht club community, Niemann said he has made incredible friends through sailing in Santa Cruz.

“That’s particularly what I like about this yacht club,” he said. “It’s got a very local feel, and one thing everyone has in common here is the love to sail.”

Mayor David Terrazas also came to pay tribute to the yacht club’s birthday, taking to the podium to share a anecdotes about the club’s history as well as make an official proclamation honoring April 14 as “Santa Cruz Yacht Club Day,” prompting shouts of approval. Altman went on to say that sailing and racing have always brought him a happiness, and a sense of joy at seeing people work so closely in tune with one another to make a boat go fast on the wind.

“I’ve always been attracted to the idea of being propelled by the wind,” he said. “It’s great team work, there’s camaraderie, and when everyone knows their job and does their job and the boat performs the way it should, that’s really special.”

Each year regatta participants, volunteers, and contributors come together to raise money for programming that supports and connects the community. Lighted Boat Parade Saturday, December 7, 2024 Sponsored by the Santa Cruz Yacht Club and including a canned food drive benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank, the Lighted Boat Parade features 50 beautifully-decorated power and sailboats parading through the Santa Cruz Harbor.
