About the Bridges Point 24 Fleet

The Bridges Point 24 (BP24) is a 24-foot sloop rigged sailboat, designed by Joel White and built in Brooklin, Maine by Wade Dow at the Bridges Point Boatyard. Since 1984, over 80 were built by Wade and his son Forrest. A few years ago, Wade sold the mold for the hull to The Bridges Point Boat Company of Bar Harbor, Maine. Click Here to reach Bill Wright about a new BP24 sailboat.

The Bridges Point 24 Sailing Club is an informal group of sailors dedicated to the preservation of the fleet and the sailing and maintenance of this beautiful boat. Most of the sailboats are still their home waters of the Gulf of Maine. These fine boats can also be found coast to coast and in places like Colorado, Minnesota, Vermont and Canada. You are welcome to join our club .

BP24 Sailing Club Members can access the Bridges Point 24 Fleet Directory . It’s a great way to identify boats and meet your fellow BP24 sailors. Our Club Directory is password protected. It’s for BP24 club members only and is not published online. Names and email addresses are updated occasionally.

This website and BP24 Fleet activities are not-for-profit, volunteer run and just for fun. We sponsor the annual “homecoming regatta” in or near Brooklin, Maine on last Sunday of July.

We’re always looking for more history, stories and pictures about the Bridges Point 24 sailboat. We are hoping to locate some of the articles published in magazines, newspapers and books about this boat, its’ creators, builders and sailors. Or write your own story and send it to us! You can submit stuff here . We will archive everything and put lots of it up on this website.

We love receiving photos or videos of Bridges Point 24 sailboats! Ask questions, get directions, post pictures and stories of your adventures on our Forum for other sailors to see, enjoy and respond to.

Please let us know how we can improve this website and Happy Sails To You!

From your BP24 Sailing Club volunteers,

Alan Chesney , Commodore

Maine’s Proud History of Building Boats

A look back at the past 200 years.

sailboats built in maine

MAINERS HAVE BUILT thousands of boats and ships in the last 200 years. Four are the state’s signature types, wherever they are found: the canoe, the peapod, Friendship sloops, and lobsterboats.

Maine’s first peoples, the Wabanaki, were building birchbark canoes (“aquiden”) long before Europeans arrived. In the late 19th century, Mainers transformed these into wood/canvas canoes, the first successful production small boat.

The lobster industry, created by the first great lobster boom in the post-Civil War years, gave rise to three more distinctly Maine boats: the double-ender, or peapod; the sloop boat or Friendship sloop; and, once engines became common, the lobsterboat.

As rusticators came from away in the late 1800s and early 1900s, they took to the water, starting yacht clubs and engaging in sailboat races. The North Haven Dinghy, a 14-foot catboat that evolved from the visiting yachtsman’s tender, is the oldest one-design racing class in North America, some say the world. Most of the wooden versions of these boats (a fiberglass version was introduced in the 1980s) were built at North Haven’s J.O. Brown and Sons yard, which was started in the 1880s. On the powerboat front, Anson Corson was a pioneer in the use of fiberglass for the mass production of runabouts in the late 1950s. Dozens of yards have helped Maine hold a worldwide reputation for fine boatbuilding, both in wood and newer epoxy-based materials.

sailboats built in maine

While a number of Maine yards have won worldwide reputations for their fine work in wood, builders in the state also have been at the forefront of introducing new technologies, from the blending of wood and epoxies to build cold-molded hulls, to lightweight but strong carbon fiber.

Recently, Hodgdon Yachts, which started buildings boats in 1816 and is the country’s oldest boatbuilder, created a warehouse-sized oven and built the record-setting carbon-fiber monohull racing machine, Comanche .

The University of Maine, which introduced the world’s largest 3D printing machine in 2018, has been at the forefront of work on integrating 3D printing with boat construction. Another innovation in the last few decades has been computer generated design and computer-controlled cutting machines that have simplified the creation of boat parts, as well as the creation of boat kits for home builders.

The History and Allure of Maine-Built Boats

Oct 13, 2022 | Magazine , News , Sabre Yachts | 0 comments

When the term Downeast is used to describe a boat among certain company, there is always the potential for debate over the specific design attributes, materials and construction processes that have traditionally defined the category. Aficionados and purists may even tell you a true Downeast boat only comes from a small group of family builders still employing the original construction techniques from nearly a century ago. At any rate, most can agree that a Downeast boat is a uniquely handsome and classic form; originally born out of necessity for lobstermen to provide for their families, and now a genre adapted for maximum pleasure by a host of luxury yacht brands.

Mount Desert Island Historical Society

“Besides the gorgeous lines of the Sabre and Back Cove model range, owners enjoy wide and safe passages from the cockpit to the bow and vision at the helm is nearly unobstructed for a full 360° view.”
