Hi all, I am still looking for the next boat... Looked at a 1988 Vantare 44 sun deck with 3208TA the other day. Does anyone have any info regarding these yachts? who built them, hull construction etc? I did notice that the stringers are all glass ( no wood) and the fittings etc seemed good quality. Any help or info appreciated thanks, Gary

Vantares were a line of yachts imported from Taiwan in the late ‘80s, mostly to the West Coast through dealers in Southern California and Seattle. The owner of the company, Mike Guth, was a retired Navy officer and he had the boats built at Chung-Hwa. The first was a 58-footer designed by Jack Sarin, followed by a 64-footer. They all had “cab-forward” styling with the pilothouse very far forward to maximize the saloon. All sorts of power was available, with most getting Cats or Johnson & Towers, but you could also opt for vee-drives, jet drive or Arnesons, although I doubt if any were built. They all had upscale detailing, with imported Italian lighting and the like, but they were typical of Taiwan construction for the time and had balsa-coring throughout the hull and deck, so that would be something to consider. The company lasted a few years and Guth left boatbuilding and moved to Florida where he started building the luxurious Vantare motor coaches that were very successful for years.

I would double check the stringer construction, be double sure there is no wood under there. Check the foredeck around hatches ,winches and any penetrations etc for softness. Survey of course is mandatory.

Full Chapter One

  • Hatteras Yachts

by David Pascoe

A long with Bertram and Hinckley, Hatteras has the distinction of being one of the first three production fiberglass boat builders to start up in around 1960. Oddly enough all three survive today, although Bertram may yet go by the wayside. The company was started in 1959 by North Carolina knitting mill owner Willis Slane who, as word has it, just wanted to build a good strong boat for himself for fishing the outer banks. What followed is one of the unparalleled success stories of the fiberglass boat building industry.

Oddly enough, of the three major startups in around 1960 - Bertram, Hinckely and Hatteras - the former are know for producing boat hulls that almost never blister. Hatteras should have applied for a patent on the blistering process, for they were one of the worst offenders. Most likely this is because Hatteras has always painted their boats and has used low quality gelcoats that are prone to blistering, as well as lower quality resins, for gel coat alone does not account for the problem.

For the most part, Hatteras built balsa cored boats. In earlier years, up through about 1980, the hulls were solid glass, and then cored hull sides appeared. Decks and house tops have always been balsa cored. In fact, were it not for Hatteras, Baltec would probably not be in business today. If you want to know how good balsa is as a core material, try to find a Hatteras with a core problem. Out of thousands of boats produced, there are only a few. And speaking of balsa, if you've ever noticed that Hatteras yachts are notably quieter inside than most others, that's because of the wonderful acoustic properties of balsa.

When it comes to building good quality, consistent and reasonably priced motor yachts, no one had been able to hold a candle to Hatteras. Unlike Bertram, Hatteras recognized that wives often controlled the checkbook in the family, and didn't make the mistake of forgetting this important marketing factor like Bertram did. Thus, when the recession of '89 struck, Hatteras was at least poised to survive it, whereas Bertram had locked themselves into the sport fishing market exclusively, with their ugly formica interiors, and manly appointments. Thus, they went down with the end of the free-spending era of the 1980's. But were it not for the parent company's deep pockets, even Hatteras probably wouldn't have survived, for large boat sales were almost nonexistent for three long years.

Yet Hatteras has since abandoned a major part of the market that they had filled for so long, the medium size sport fisherman and motor yachts of a type that was renowned for their sea keeping abilities, having been designed by the famous designer Jack Hargrave. Two prominent examples of which are the 45 Convertible and 43 motor yacht. Today, the smallest boat they make is a fifty footer priced at well over one million dollars. And with Bertram not gaining much attention in the mid size range either, the days when we had a few good quality, rugged offshore type boats to choose from are over. All we are left with is an aging fleet of older Hatterai and Bertrams. The Bertram fleet once consisted of 21, 25, 26, 28, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37, 38, 42, 43, and 46 foot models. All that's left is are outrageously priced 36 and 39 footers which are rarely seen on the waterfront these days.

Unfortunately, no one has rushed in to fill the void created by the withdrawal of these two companies. Oh, sure a few have tried, but the most recent offerings don't even come close to duplicating these legends. So why did Hatteras abandon this market? Or why isn't Bertram doing well with their three boats under 50 feet? In a word, cost and lower profit margins.

To produce boats of this quality today simply costs more than the market will bear. Plus, they probably can't compete with the lower cost price leaders since fewer and fewer people are willing to pay the freight for better quality. Boats have gotten too fancy as people demand more and more amenities, more plush interiors, more appliances, electronics and whatnot. When you add up the cost of all this, and factor in the additional cost factor of substantially higher quality structures and systems, it's not hard to see how good quality boats quickly exceed the reach of most of those who desire them.

But, there is an additional factor as well, which is that the design of a good sea boat is not amenable to the creation of the vast interior spaces that people want today. Boat owners willingly sacrifice sea keeping ability for interior space. Mom takes one look at any good sea boat and says, "But it's so small inside! That Sea Ray was twice as big." Yeah, Mom, it is. but you can't shove a wide flat surface against an oncoming wave and not end up getting splattered against a bulkhead. There's no way you're going to take a Sea Ray to sea as you would a Hatteras.  Mom doesn't want to go to sea anyway. She'd prefer to stay lashed to the dock, close to the swimming pool and tennis courts. And that's why we don't have any more 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 53, 43, 45, 46, or 48 foot Hatterases anymore. People want floating condos, and the market will always give them what they want so long as enough of them want it. But there aren't enough people that want good sea boats.

So, until people decide either that they're tired of beating their brains out in floating condos, or get tired of staying tied to the dock, or just puttering around in protected waters, or they stop demanding the utmost in luxury, (I'm not holding my breath) the days of the middle class Hatteras are over.

Sad, but very true.

All equipment and luxury items are custom or top-of-the-line name brands and the décor throughout, reflects the owners wife extensive knowledge as a luxury homeowner.

The well renowned design team of Jack Sarin and Mike Guth made an incredible “statement” in the world of Luxury Motoryachts when they designed the VANTARE. They custom built these exceptional yachts, which are known for their superior performance, interior and exterior styling, each custom built to owners specification and incorporated the owners wishes for luxury, with superb quality and comfort inside and out, along with comfortable sea performance.

THERE TRULY ISN’T ANYTHING ON THE MARKET THAT CAN COMPARE…CALL FOR A PRIVATE ONBOARD SHOWING TODAY…YOU’LL BE BREATHLESS!!

NOW....sit back, pour a nice smooth glass of fine wine... and enjoy the full specs, which will be added as fast as we can type.

It's easy to see why the Vantare line of luxury yachts are built and designed as they are when you know a little about Vantare president Michael Guth's background. As a U.S. Navy Commander, Mike Guth had duties that included outfitting and the maintenance of high-speed Navy boats and also submarines. This is where he learned that lightness and speed can be carefully balanced against strength and durability. He retired from the Navy and became a successful builder of energy-efficient custom homes in the Pacific N.W. before he began his boating career. He knew he could build a quality Motor Yacht in the Hatteras tradition, not on a cheaper scale, but to compete with them on the highest level of quality. The Vandare family of yachts are a great yachting legacy to the quality he and his wife stood for. Incredibly, he followed his successful Vantare Yacht career, shifting his interest from yachts to Motor Coaches, where he built some of the finest motor coaches available today…names you will immediately recognize, the Motor Coaches, Provost, and Featherlite.

Once in a great while, a boat comes along that surpasses the combined expectations of owner, builder and designer. The Vantare CUSTOM Cockpit Motoryacht “WHEELER DEALER” is just such a cruiser and reasserts what founder Mike Guth said is the philosophy behind all Vantares, which was to build a strong, stylish, yacht, using advanced materials and methods, that equals or exceeds any domestic cruiser on the market in luxury and performance. With the help of a Luxury Yacht Naval Architect Jack Sarin, the first Vantare 58’ took the Pacific N.W. by surprise in 1987. It was notable for its low profile and swept-back lines, a modern look without European pretenses. Like the 64s that followed, It quickly established a reputation for excellent performance with small, fuel-efficient diesels, but it also adds its own character and color to the Vantare reputation and it proved to be a sea-kindly vessel of the first magnitude.

The philosophy of the entire Vantare line, was to produce strong but lightweight yachts using the latest fiberglass technology, so that the fairly small power plants can achieve both speed and fuel economy without sacrificing seaworthiness. It's not a small task, but designer Jack Sarin (who is responsible for all the Vantare' lines) met the requirements admirably.

Yacht Architect Jack Sarin gave the Vantare 64 a modified-V hull with a 10 degree deadrise at the transom and a full keel for longitudinal stability and tracking. High freeboard and an upper spray strake help maintain a dry boat in all but the worst conditions. The boat boasts a low overall profile for aesthetic as well as functional reasons. The hull, deck, deckhouse and flying bridge are cored, hand-laid structures. Coring exceeds one and a half inches in some sections and end-grained balsa coring is used in the upper deck, to keep the weight to a minimum and the center of gravity low. Performance and sturdy construction in a comfortable ride and fuel economy, plus the tremendous space for the owner, guests and crew, makes ‘WHEELER DEALER” AN EXCEPTIONAL FIND ON THE YACHTING MARKET TODAY!!!

The hull is one-piece, using Divinycel coring to achieve high strength. Isophthalic resin is used both for strength and for protection against blistering, resulting in a light but strong hull. Foam stringers are used in areas of stress, but the overall stiffness of the hull shell has reduced the need for heavy structural bracing and allows for better utilization of the interior space as well as a lighter finished product.

Another seemingly impossible design request was to have 6'6" or more headroom throughout the interior, but still keep the lines of the superstructure sleek, both to lower the center of gravity and to achieve the European styling. Again, Sarin used the interior volume of the low-stringered hull and the 20’ beam to accomplish both requirements.

“WHEELER DEALER” is a remarkably comfortable, spacious and stylish vessel. Her 6’8” headroom and lovely interior is warm, well-kept and inviting in every way. The pilothouse is spacious and designed more like a 100’ Motoryacht. Her roomy Flybridge is fully enclosable. The 8’ aft DECK PLATFORM is perfect for swimming, diving, fishing and WATER TOYS or any outdoor activities. Access to the storage area under the cockpit from the stern, includes TWO separate, port & starboard storage areas for PERSONAL WATER CRAFT and a large lazarette mid-ship under the stairs with commodious stowage for abundant diving equipment, including an air compressor refill station. This huge stern area for all your ships “toys” is often called “THE BEACHCLUB”….an appropriate name for this wonderfully usable area.

Forward of the stern lazarette compartment is the engine room with easy access to the engines and the other equipment and machinery. This vessel is truly a cruiser or a magnificent live-a-board with all the comforts. “WHEELER DEALER is ready to go on your great adventure as YOUR HOME OR HOME AWAY FROM HOME!

“WHEELER DEALER” would make a great seasonal home in south Florida, with all of the amenities of a home in the more than Million Dollar range and yet it is one of the best values in the Yachting world TODAY, that can carry you in comfort, safety and luxury ON THE EASTERN SEABOARD OR FULFILLING YOUR BAHAMIAN OR CARIBBEAN CRUISING ADVENTURES. There are MANY OPTIONS when considering “WHEELER DEALER”, which includes the possibility of a LUXURY CHARTER YACHT, or DIVE CHARTER YACHT, as “WHEELER DEALER” sports TEN comfortable berths, FOUR large heads, FIVE staterooms and THREE galleys!!!! The rakish forefoot, sweptback pilothouse windscreen, and attention to styling details mark the Vantare “WHEELER DEALER” as a "Med-styled" yacht.

The FIVE staterooms have numerous hanging closets, lined in cedar and there are multiple dressers and cabinets, as well as telephones and room Intercoms. All baths are spacious and tastefully decorated with custom lighting, mirrors, marble and elongated toilets with push button flush.

A walk through the “WHEELER DEALER” begins on the aft platform, entering the aft cockpit through a transom door. From here, the skipper and his guests can climb the recessed teak stairs with Stainless Steel rails for safety, up to a spacious outside aft living area. The full-width upper aft deck provides plenty of room for numerous guests with a large table to port, with large “L” shaped settee outboard and several folding “Captains” chairs on centerline plus at the tables end, which affords seating for up to 10 guests. There are high Stainless Steel rails around and the stern opening Isinglass has zip out windows and there are sliding tinted Plexiglas windows, port and starboard to enclose the stern living area snugly, so that when the weather turns, you have the option of extending the main saloon even farther out. To starboard, there is a large freezer box, a bar sink, Jennaire opening grill and refrigerator with plenty of counter space….essentially a SECOND complete galley for the perfect evening of alfresco dining or just socializing, in this enclosed CALIFORNIA SUNDECK.

Forward, just before entering the main salon, there is a day head with mirrored bulkheads and full stand-up shower and to starboard, is the access to the engine room, convenient for service personnel and eliminating the need for traipsing through the main cabin.

Visitors who pass through sliding doors aft, will discover an airy, open main saloon with numerous windows. It is 33 feet from the sliding door to the helm, but it looks like more much more.

The main cabin is a refreshing, wide-open place to entertain or relax. The owner can monitor the radar or the waters all around, from the galley or the dinning bar, which is only 20 feet from the helm. For those in warmer climates the value of a lower helm station is immeasurable. How wonderful it is to go below and flip on the reverse-cycle heat/AC, and how that can extend your cruising season to a year ‘round adventure. Inside, furnishing and interior wood joinery are excellent, with thought given to matching the wood grain on each panel. Overhead, gold-plated Italian halogen light fixtures are recessed into the headliner, while dimmer-controlled rope lighting is hidden behind window valances with real wood Venetian blinds.

There’s a wet bar with ice-maker and a complete entertainment center along the starboard side, which features a hydraulic lift for the TV, so that it can be completely hidden inside of the cabinet, with just a touch of the finger. A large comfortable L-shaped settee with cocktail table and a dining table for 8 graces the saloon to port.

The galley is located forward of the main salon and is a focal point of this beautiful yacht. So many yachts feature a “galley down” configuration, which puts the cook at a disadvantage in so many ways. With a “galley down”, the cook is separated from conversations, socializing and taking in the views that the rest of the guests are enjoying. “WHEELER DEALER” has absolutely the best and most thoughtful galley layout, which incorporates cooking, serving, enjoying conversations of guests who are lounging in the spacious main saloon, which is the center of activity. With abundant overhead cabinets and open-backed counter tops, the chef even has the ability to pass food to the Captain at the forward helm station. The counters, storage, sinks and overall layout make it easy to prepare elegant meals and snacks for a large crowd.

At the helm, a destroyer type wheel of ash and stainless steel, Hydraulic power steering and MMC electronic engine controls offer true luxury for the skipper. The MMC controls, switch command of the boat from the lower helm to the flying bridge at the push of one button. Going forward to check on the anchor or handle lines is a simple matter of sliding open one of two side access doors, (port & starboard) in the lower helm station.

Access to the flying bridge is a quick walk up the stairs to port. Everything about this vessel is roomier than expected and the Flybridge is no exception. The Flybridge and top deck are expansive with a complete helm Station! There is a complete helm, with dual Captains seats, guest seating for 2 to port and “L” shaped seating with a cocktail table, to starboard of the helm. Directly aft is a large “U” shaped settee with large dining table, adequate seating for dining for 10 guests. To port, there is a sink, Jenaire grill & complete wetbar with refrigerator. All of the upper deck and bow cushions are covered with a fashionable Sunbrella, plus there are custom covers for everything, including the Flybridge galley area and all seats, instruments etc. The rear part of the upper deck is huge and is ideal for sunbathers. Port and starboard electric davits provide additional convenience in lowering equipment (toys). Down the ash-lined stairs, carpeted in the middle section for safety, near the entertainment center in the main salon, you’ll find the master stateroom. Adjacent, at the bottom of the stairs, is a six foot hanging locker and washer & dryer. A king-size berth, which takes advantage of this yachts wide beam, flanked by twin ash nightstands dominates the master cabin, headed by a beveled-glass mirror. There is storage everywhere: beneath a built-in television console on the centerline at the foot of the berth, below the stairs and all along the starboard side. A comfortable settee and handy vanity/desk line the port side. There is also a large en-suite head, accented with custom tile work and equipped with home size shower with custom tile floor. You’ll note custom lighting throughout. Also of note are the unique custom brass door handles and the intricate cut outs on the doors which make smashing your fingers impossible. The Master Stateroom has a, complete entertainment system with Satellite TVs, DVD, AM/FM/Stereo and CD player.

All the baths are spacious and tastefully decorated with custom lighting, mirrors, marble and elongated toilets with push button flush.

To reach the forward and amidships guest staterooms, visitors go down the forward stairs located to starboard of the helm station. The forward VIP stateroom features a queen-size berth, private ensuite bath with marble-floors, stall shower & extensive storage in multiple cabinets, drawers and hanging locker. All FIVE staterooms have enough storage and lockers for all your personal gear, for long extended cruises.

Next aft to starboard is a private cabin with louvered sliding door, cedar lined hanging locker, storage shelves at end of berth and storage locker outboard and overhead. Midway aft, is another stateroom which sports a beautiful athwart ship queen-size bed with multiple drawers under, separate dresser with drawers, mirrors and lockers.

As you continue to explore these beautiful staterooms, to port, you will note a stateroom with an over/under bunk configuration with single berths, PLUS a twin berth, separated by a 3 drawer low-boy dresser. There are drawers under the berths and storage shelves above.
