VOLVO OCEAN RACE

SUPERYACHTS

AMERICA'S CUP

DESIGNED FOR THE TOUGHEST RACE ON EARTH.

The Volvo Ocean 65 is the new one-design boat that contested the 2014-15 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. It will also be the one design used for the 2017-18 edition. At 65ft LOA the new yachts are slightly shorter than the previous generation of Volvo Open 70s but will be more reliable, robust and affordable while still being a very high performance racing boat.

The new boat is designed by Farr Yacht Design with a consortium of four boatyards taking care of the build process — Green Marine in the United Kingdom, Decision in Switzerland, Persico in Italy and Multiplast in France.

“Farr Yacht Design is pretty uniquely positioned in that we have an enormous Volvo Ocean Race experience," said Patrick Shaughnessy, President of Farr Yacht Design. "We have designed 40 boats for the race, been involved in nine editions, the last few campaigns we've been on the ground 100 percent of the time supporting the teams and really been part of the race, and the thing that makes us a little unique is that we can combine that with an enormous one-design experience. I don't believe there's another team in the world that can present all those parts and that's really I think what makes us ideally suited for this opportunity.”

Let Me start by saying "These are some pretty amazing racing Machines" . The Volvo Ocean Race is an Around the World Race , The Open 70 class is the largest , I am using plans that I got off the internet ( lines drawing ) for the  Camper Volvo 70 wich was the 2011-2012 New Zealand Boat . I am building her in a 1/4" = 1' - 0" scale so she will be about 17 1/2" long wich is perfect to free Sail . So I will build her to Sail. I will use Basswood for the Backbone ( Keel ) Frames and Planking . I will also be doing the 2 part West System on the hull, so she will be plenty strong.  This morning I got up and had coffe , and after spraying the final coat of white on America3 , I went to kinkos with my flash drive, and had the drawings enlarged to scale, printed them out and went to Michael's for the wood, I am planning on my own color scheme for this one as well as doing some things that I had seen on some of the other boats , So it would be my entry for this years 2014-2015 race. and that's part of the Fun ( That is what it's all about ) Here is where I am at :

Thank's Geoff, I am glad that you are going to follow along . This build just fell in my lap , I don't know that much about these Boats ,Last time I followed Around the World Races it was called the Whitbread race. So I may learn somthing along the way. It looks like it will be alot of fun to build . And we will get to see her sail.

Best Regards,

This is going to be an interesting built. I always watch these races when National Geographic has made a movie from it.

I'll be following this one.

The name Whitbread race has been around for a long time. This is also a race where people die while sailing. Especially around the 70's where there wasn't as much modern technology.

It is the ultimate sailing experience.

Current Built:  Zeehaen 1639, Dutch Fluit from Dutch explorer Abel J. Tasman

Unofficial motto of the VOC: "God is good, but trade is better"

Many people believe that Captain J. Cook discovered Australia in 1770. They tend to forget that Dutch mariner Willem Janszoon landed on Australia’s northern coast in 1606. Cook never even sighted the coast of Western Australia).

Wow, that's raw power Pete!  It'll be interesting how your model will do. Safe me a seat, okay?  You certainly do some amazing things with your models!   Cheers,

Hi Piet, there is always a seat , this one should be alot of fun. I will cut the Keel and frames out tomorrow , She's a very straight forward boat , so it should go without a hitch

Here is a bit of history for everyone. Notice when they first started that there were many more boats/crew than the present?

http://www.kriter.tv/history/whitbread_history.pdf

Thank's Marc, I noticed that as well less boats/crews , that's why it was easy to obtain lines drawings for the older boats ( right off the net ) I am a student of this racing series, so I appreciate the help.

Regards, Keith

gallery_1526_572_501.jpg

The boat you are showing in post #9 is Hugo Boss not a Volvo 70 but a Imoca 60, these are designed for shorthanded ocean races like the Vendee Globe and Barcelona Race.

@Keith, These boats have daggerboarts because they use a canting keel with the ballast attached to it. The keel is only used for maximizing (optimizing) the stability of the boat and has almost no function as creator of lateral lift for upwind purposes. The 2 asymmetric daggerboarts are used for that purpose.

These Volvo 70 are amazing boats and I look forward to follow your build!

Thanks Keith, , Welcome aboard, Hans Answered the dagger board question, (I wont be adding the dagger boards, as I intend to sail this one and the Keel should be enough )

Thank you Hans, I am a student of the series, and I appreciate the help

Can I ask - what are the daggerboards for?

Dutch flat bottom boats have these as well, it is like a keel. But these boats have a keel, so my guess is to give them extra stability.

:(

Pete, where are you getting your plans from?

Hi Marc, for this boat I got the lines drawing off the net , and am using the Brunel Sail plan. here is the lines drawing

post-7445-0-20022300-1407857179_thumb.jpg

  • CAd My Fingers , Piet , Elmer Cornish and 2 others

The Brunel is a new one design Volvo 65 used for the 2014-2015 Race. This is the first time The Volvo race uses an One-Design boat.

The Brunel rig is not identical to a Volvo 70 rig!

:D

Some additional information regarding the Daggerboards: The keel is canted to windward from the center of the boat apr. 40-45 degrees. If the boat is canted an other 15 degrees to leeward, the dagger keel is 55-60 degrees of the vertical. the projected area is therefor minimal en so the keel is constructed with the minimal resistance en only used to hold the big led bulb to windward. If you want to see this on youtube look for the Hugo Boss keel walk. This is a Imoca 60 and canted extreme for the promotion video, but the video makes it very clear.

Thank's Hans, I have been learning alot about these boats and the new rules. Yes I am building a imaginary version based on the camper plans, as a fun project with my own Color sceme . to imagine that I would be entering it into this years race . I know my boat does not meet the new rules changes. They are incredible boats. ( I just discovered them a few weeks ago ) My knowlege of Racing Yacht's is Primarily with the America's Cup Boat's . I am having fun learning about this extreme Sailing

Thank's Cap'n'Bob, Pretty wild,I just discovered these Boats Should be fun

Thank you Kees,I hope you enjoy it

post-7445-0-35005100-1407890490_thumb.jpg

Well, Today I had a great first day with the Boat. I started by laying out the Back bone and setting up the builing jig ( square is square & level is level ) I next cut out the Back bone and layed out the frames, The first thing I changed was the transom , now the deck goes all the way to the transom. I then cut out all the Frames, and started to detail the Cockpit section of the Boat. Next will be to make the Deck sections and detail the Back bone for the Keel ( wich will remain stationary ) I dry fit all the frames to the Back bone, and she is right on the money. ( this was a much needed great first day on the build ) This is quite a different boat, This is the first time I have built anything like this, It's been amazingly fun . Here are the results

With this model boat, everyone can sail his own Volvo Ocean Race. Because the VOLVO OCEAN 65 is extremely seaworthy and saltwater resistant.

The racing yacht of 1.1m is vacuum-manufactured with carbon fibre and epoxy. Using a double hatch system to access the technics, the boat is nearly 100% waterproof. The boat is equipped with two servos for the double rudder and the upwind sails, and 2 sail winches for the gennaker sheets and the gennaker rolling system. In order to sail really fast in all conditions, you can choose between 4 sets of upwind sails and 2 different gennakers. Boat and sails can be ordered in your business design.

“This finally means no more boring upwind courses with model boats.” Hans Genthe, owner of stockmaritime, has done intensive testing of the boat. “The hardest test was at St. Peter Ording at the North Sea in mid-December.”

The model is immediately available. The sailing characteristics of the VOLOVO OCEAN 65 are documented with videos on a new website: http://www.stockmaritime.com/premium

According to the class rules, carbon can not be used in the sails. carbon can restrict the satellite connection. A novelty to the Volvo 70’s are the outriggers. They make it possible to move the sheeting point of the headsail outwards. The Volvo 65 often sails triple-headed, i.e. with three headsails, which creates a deep sail pressure point with maximum sail area.

Drinking water is made on board by a watermaker. You are welcome to take along effervescent tablets with vitamins or minerals as well as isotonic drink powders.

Yes, please bring a drinking bottle labelled with your name.

Sleeping on board

The crew is divided into 2 watches. Basically the watches work like this:

1st watch from 6-12

2nd watch from 12-18

1st watch from 18-22

2nd watch from 22-02

1st watch from 02-06 and so on (short-long night).

The watch system can also be changed in bad weather conditions. But this is no guarantee that you can always sleep through the night, because during manoeuvres it can happen that “all hands on deck” are needed.

As it is very loud in the ship, earplugs are recommended.

As you prefer.

They are standard tube bunks, which are really comfortable by the way.

A cushion is highly recommended.

Working on board

All cooperation is obligatory. Each crew member is assigned a task based on their sailing skills.

If you already have sailing experience, you can steer the boat. Please note that the skipper is carrying all responsibility and decides who can steer the boat.

Advanced Charter Allowance

ACA consists of the following components:

  • Any mooring fees
  • Proportional excess insurance

We charge a flat rate of 55 € per day.

The following costs are not included in ACA:

  • Entry fee for regattas
  • Life jacket (optional)
  • Accommodation at the place of departure and place of arrival

Miscellaneous

Yes, there is a 12-volt socket onboard.

Please only use foldable bags. Please also bring a smaller bag for the most important and quickly accessible items of clothing. Waterproof bags are generally recommended.

A playbook is currently being developed and will be released as soon as possible.

Volvo Ocean 65, VO65 NO6 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

The Volvo Ocean 65 is an iconic ocean greyhound. Conceived especially for the Volvo Ocean Race, with a brief following a downturn of entries from the spiraling costs of the Volvo 70 – a study was undertaken to provide a one-design class to keep costs down and provide a close and entertaining race for the public to follow.

Farr Yachts’ design produced a yacht that was capable of being just 2.7% slower than the Volvo 70 class, but significantly more robust, and designed with more protection for the crew. In fact, the Volvo 65 holds the Volvo Ocean Race 24 hour distance record, a testament to the strong build and excellent design of the yacht.

Volvo Ocean 65 NO6 has competed in the race a few times, originally as VESTAS and TURN THE TIDE ON PLASTIC. Now available from the new owners for the next race and beyond, she comes as a complete package with support containers.

Volvo Cars has started the countdown for the second Volvo Ocean Race by presenting a series of specially designed Volvo Ocean Race Edition models.   The customers can choose between three models – Volvo XC90 Ocean Race Edition, Volvo V70 Ocean Race Edition and Volvo XC70 Ocean Race Edition. All of them feature the unique Ocean Blue livery.   “The Volvo Ocean Race represents values that reflect what our customers are looking for in their cars. It’s all about an active lifestyle, adventure and passion. The campaign cars radiate all this and we know from experience that they are highly attractive models”, says Gerry Keaney, Senior Vice President Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Cars.   When the Volvo Ocean Race was held the first time round, the company sold twice as many of its special campaign cars as planned. 4,500 Ocean-Blue Volvo V70 and XC70 models were delivered before the winning boat, “Illbruck”, crossed the finishing line in Kiel, Germany, on 9 June 2002.

Exciting new interior designs “This time we have an even better offer than before, with particular focus on a range of interior details in exciting materials, for instance blue-tone aluminium inlay panels and upholstery in materials resembling exclusive yachting clothes. With this offer we expect to sell considerably more cars compared to previous Volvo Ocean Race Edition”, says Gerry Keaney.   As before, the marine atmosphere is radiated by the special Ocean Blue body colour combined with silver mouldings, roof rails in aluminium and the Volvo Ocean Race emblem on the front doors.   Production of the specially built Volvo Ocean Race models will start in mid June 2005.

The Volvo Ocean Race The Volvo Ocean Race is a round the world yacht race featuring nine offshore racing legs. It starts on the 12th of November 2005 in Vigo, Spain. An inshore race at each of the main stopover ports will also be included in the 2005–2006 event.   This race also features “The Volvo Open 70” – a new and faster boat with a modern design.

The Ocean Race Europe begins in Kiel

Published on February 14th, 2024 by Editor -->

Though the full route is not finalized, the second edition of The Ocean Race Europe will start from the notable German sailing venue of Kiel on August 10, 2025. The first race was held in 2021 as a bridge event before The Ocean Race 2022-23.

Previously, Kiel was the finish port of the Volvo Ocean Race 2001-02 and the German city hosted a hugely successful Fly-By on the penultimate leg of The Ocean Race 2022-23.

The course is expected to sail across the North Sea and the Atlantic, through the Strait of Gibraltar, and finish in the Mediterranean, with up to five stops along the way (in addition to the start and finish ports). The inaugural edition had three legs from France to Italy .

Intended to provide activity in advance of the 2026-27 edition of the round-the-world Race, The Ocean Race Europe will take place in the newest generation of high-tech IMOCA boats, with the event occurring over a six-week period.

But beyond the competition, Race Chairman Richard Brisius seeks for The Ocean Race Europe to also reinforce how the restoration of ocean health is key to life on our planet.

“This is also about creating real changes in policy for the Ocean, calling for a reset in the relationship between humanity and the Ocean,” said Brisius.

“Initiatives around The Ocean Race Europe will support learning initiatives for race fans and school children while our on-board science program will collect data from the race boats for experts to analyze as they continue to learn about the changes taking place in our waters, from the Baltic Sea in northern Europe to the Mediterranean in the South.”

Sailor Cole Brauer makes history as the first American woman to race solo around the world

Aboard her 40-foot racing boat First Light ,  29-year-old Cole Brauer just became the first American woman to race nonstop around the world by herself.

The New York native pulled into A Coruña, Spain, on Thursday after a treacherous 30,000-mile journey that took 130 days.

She thanked a cheering crowd of family and fans who had been waiting for her on shore.

“This is really cool and so overwhelming in every sense of the word,” she exclaimed, before drinking Champagne from her trophy.

The 5-foot-2 powerhouse placed second out of 16 avid sailors who competed in the Global Solo Challenge, a circumnavigation race that started in A Coruña with participants from 10 countries. The first-of-its-kind event   allowed a wide range of boats to set off in successive departures based on performance characteristics. Brauer started on Oct. 29, sailing down the west coast of Africa, over to Australia, and around the tip of South America before returning to Spain.

Brauer is the only woman and the youngest competitor in the event — something she hopes young girls in and out of the sport can draw inspiration from.

“It would be amazing if there was just one girl that saw me and said, ‘Oh, I can do that too,’” Brauer said of her history-making sail.

It’s a grueling race, and more than half of the competitors have dropped out so far. One struck something that caused his boat to flood, and another sailor had to abandon his ship after a mast broke as a severe storm was moving in.

The four-month journey is fraught with danger, including navigating the three “Great Capes” of Africa, Australia and South America. Rounding South America’s Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, is often likened to climbing Mount Everest because of its perfect storm of hazards — a sharp rise in the ocean floor and whipping westerly winds push up massive waves. Combined with the frigid waters and stray icebergs, the area is known as a graveyard for ships, according to NASA. Brauer  said  she was “so unbelievably stoked” when she sailed past Cape Horn in January.

Marco Nannini, organizer of the Global Solo Challenge, said the comparison to scaling Mount Everest doesn’t capture the difficulty of the race. Sailing solo means not just being a skipper but a project manager — steering the boat, fixing equipment, understanding the weather and maintaining one’s physical health.

Nannini cited the relatively minuscule number of people who have sailed around the world solo — 186, according to the International Association of Cape Horners — as evidence of the challenges that competitors face. More than 6,000 people have climbed Mount Everest, according to  High Adventure Expeditions .

Brauer stared down 30-foot waves that had enough force to throw her across the boat. In a scare caught on camera, she badly injured her rib   near the halfway point of the event. At another point, her team in the U.S. directed Brauer to insert an IV into her own arm due to dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea.

She was able to stay in constant communication with members of her team, most of whom are based in New England,   and keep herself entertained with Netflix and video calls with family through Starlink satellites.   That’s also how Brauer was able to use Zoom to connect with NBC News for an interview, while she was sailing about 1,000 miles west of the Canary Islands.

While Brauer was technically alone on First Light, she had the company of 450,000 followers on Instagram, where she frequently got candid about life on an unforgiving sea while reflecting on her journey.

“It all makes it worth it when you come out here, you sit on the bow, and you see how beautiful it is,” she said in an Instagram video, before panning the camera to reveal the radiant sunrise.

Brauer grew up on Long Island but didn’t learn to sail until she went to college in Hawaii. She traded in her goal of becoming a doctor for life on the water. But she quickly learned making a career as a sailor is extremely difficult, with professional racers often hesitant to welcome a 100-pound young woman on their team.

Even when she was trying to find sponsors for the Global Solo Challenge, she said a lot of people “wouldn’t touch her with a 10-foot pole” because they saw her as a “liability.”

Brauer’s message to the skeptics and naysayers? “Watch me.”

“I push so much harder when someone’s like, ‘No, you can’t do that,’ or ‘You’re too small,’” Brauer explained.

“The biggest asset is your mental strength, not the physical one,” Nannini said. “Cole is showing everyone that.”

Brauer hopes to continue competing professionally and is already eyeing another around-the-world competition, but not before she gets her hands on a croissant and cappuccino.

“My mouth is watering just thinking about that.”

Emilie Ikeda is an NBC News correspondent.
