about the Boathouse

Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill

THE MOST FUN BAR & GRILL EXPERIENCE ON FLORIDA'S SOUTHWEST COAST

The history of the original Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill at the Cape Coral Yacht Club dates back to the early 1950’s. Businessmen Leonard and Jack Rosen, brothers from Baltimore, Maryland, spent two weeks flying around Southwest Florida looking for land to develop. While flying over Redfish Point(Location of the Original Boathouse), across from already established city of Fort Myers and what would eventually become Cape Coral, Leonard decided to develop this plot of land, marking it by tossing coins out of the window of the plane. The area didn’t know what was about to hit it!

The Rosen brothers changed the Floridian wilderness into a waterfront paradise: a place for selling and buying dreams. Cape Coral was to become the largest master-planned community in the United States. Building such a paradise came with many challenges. Clearing the land involved chopping through mangroves, pine trees, and native Florida brush with machetes. The men slept in tents and had to battle rattlesnakes, panthers, and alligators. The humidity and heat were brutal; there were salt marshes and muddy pools, as well as thick, hard-to-cut limestone to tackle. Once the clearing process was complete, canals were dug out with dredges and the leftover Earth was used to build up the land to the required elevation of 5’ 6” above sea level. The first official building in Cape Coral, even before any houses were constructed, was the Rosen’s sales office. The location is where George’s Auto now stands at Cape Coral Parkway and Coronado Parkway.

A team of hotshot salesmen used a fleet of planes to offer free rides as a very effective selling method. Sacks of flour were dropped from the plane to mark lots customers bought from the air! At the beginning, landing strips were made for sales flights on SE 47th Terrace, Cape Coral Parkway, and Coronado Parkway. They eventually moved to a small airport near what is now Del Prado Boulevard and SE 21st Street. In 1965, the airport was shut down and flights were moved over to Page field in Fort Myers once the Cape Coral Bridge was built.

The Rosens thought they would sell most of the lots immediately, with the intention for people to make monthly payments before retiring to their property later, so they could have the time to construct future amenities. However, land sales soared to $5 million within the first five months! They found that most prospective buyers wanted to move down right away.

TWO UNIQUE LOCATIONS

OPEN 365 DAYS A YEAR!

Before buyers could move down, model homes had to be built. A motel and restaurant were also needed to accommodate buyers. They found difficulty in keeping up with the demand for the good life of swimming, lounging, fishing, boating, and golfing promised at the time.

There was a lot of hype, promotion and advertising to encourage people to move to Cape Coral. Celebrities like Bob Hope, Anita Bryant, and Hugh Downs were brought in to help promote sales. A movie staring Phyllis Diller called "The Fat Spy" was filmed in Cape Coral along with episodes from the TV show Route 66 was filmed during Cape Coral’s early years.

The city became known as a “Waterfront Wonderland”, with over 400 miles of navigable waterways. After several houses were built, the Yacht Club was constructed with a beach, pool, pier and clubhouse. It was kid friendly and had a popular teen club, where adults were not allowed unless they accompanied a child.

Almost 52 years to the day after the Cape Coral Yacht Club opened, the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill held it’s grand opening to the public. The restaurant has grown to become one of the most popular tiki bars in the United States. It was featured on the Travel Channel show "Food Paradise", showcasing the popular menu items Authentic Cuban Sandwich and The Big BLT along with the Boathouse’s famous Liki Tiki cocktail. It’s a little hidden gem nestled among the palm trees at the end of Driftwood Parkway. With unmatched beautiful sunset views of the Caloosahatchee River, this local landmark boasts a private beach, multiple seating levels, two full service bars, award winning cuisine, over 400 feet of dockage, fuel services to boats, and live music daily; all while having some of the most stunning scenery in the in Southwest Florida.

Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill

Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill

RESTAURANTS March 6, 2023 admin

Catching a sunset at the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill is a Cape Coral tradition for visitors and residents alike. It’s the only spot in the Cape offering an unobstructed waterfront view of Southwest Florida’s brilliant sunsets. “The jewel of Cape Coral” is how the casual, al fresco restaurant and bar is referred to by Zak Kearns, vice president of Kearns Restaurant Group.

The Kearns Restaurant Group and McGuigan Restaurant Concepts opened the Boathouse on property that is part of Yacht Club Community Park in May 2014. Located on the shores of the Caloosahatchee River, the restaurant is situated on the only beach in Cape Coral. You can get a cold drink and a hot sandwich while your toes are in the sand.

Originally, the restaurant concept was a waterside outpost for the restaurant group’s wildly popular Ford’s Garage. The burger-driven restaurant that originated on First Street in downtown Fort Myers has since expanded to some two dozen locations nationwide.

While burgers are always good at the beach, this restaurant has more of an island tiki vibe. So, the menu evolved, and the Boathouse found an identity all its own, featuring lots of seafood, such as a blackened filet of mahi-mahi in a pineapple rum glaze.

Fried seafood baskets are one of the top sellers. Guests can choose from lightly battered and fried scallops, shrimp, chicken tenders, mahi-mahi fingers and grouper, or try a combination.

Grouper Bites are a signature dish. Nuggets of the local fish are fried until golden and served with curly fries. They also come as an appetizer, perfect for sharing. Made in a similar preparation are Florida Gator Bites . The crisp yet tender morsels of meat come with a house-made Everglades dipping sauce. And the rumors are true; the taste is quite like chicken.

Burgers may not dominate, but they still have a prominent spot on the menu. The Famous Boathouse Burger is another staple. The half pound of Angus beef is simply grilled and served with fresh basics such as lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese. For an extra treat, add applewood smoked bacon. In addition to this classic, there is a South-Western Burger , served with BBQ sauce. And for those who like a little spice, the Jalapeño Bacon Cheeseburger is the ticket.

Of all the items on the menu, it’s the Key West-inspired Authentic Cuban Sandwich that continues to get the lion’s share of attention. People come searching for the savory sandwich after seeing it featured on the Travel Channel show Food Paradise. Besides being layered with ham and pulled pork, this gets an additional burst of flavor thanks to slices of pepperoni.

Following Hurricane Ian, the neighboring yacht club is still closed and undergoing a massive overhaul. The boat docks are also being repaired. At press time, the Boathouse was still completing hurricane repairs and renovations. However, Kearns was on target for opening at the beginning of March and says the space will be better than ever.

The restaurant’s famous tiki huts were destroyed by the storm. But their original builders, the Seminole Indians, came quickly to the rescue. They not only rebuilt them, Kearns says they were made “bigger, better, and stronger than ever.”

More rail seating has also been added, offering great views of the water and beach. Seating is first come, first served at the lively bar where headturning, 32-ounce bucket cocktails are mixed. You can get almost any of the signature cocktails bucket-sized, then keep the container as a souvenir. The Liki Tiki is an award-winning mix of lemon and pineapple flavored rums, blue curacao, pineapple juice, sweet and sour mix and Sprite. Warning, it goes down easy on a hot day.

Tropic Like It’s Hot is more than a clever play on words. It’s a refreshing favorite with lime rum, watermelon liqueur, simple syrup and soda. You can’t have an open-air tiki bar on the water without frozen libations, and the Boathouse does not disappoint. Think piña coladas, daiquiris and hurricanes, to name a few.

The Boathouse does such big business for lunch and dinner, many people forget, or perhaps don’t even know that it is also open for breakfast. A great place for boaters to grab a breakfast sandwich to-go, the menu is also full of morning classics, including omelets, biscuits smothered in southern gravy, breakfast burritos, bagels and more.

Texas French Toast is a favorite. Thick pieces of bread are egg-battered and cooked until crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Topped with maple syrup, butter and powdered sugar, it’s sweet perfection. There is even an Early Riser Happy Hour with drink discounts on breakfast cocktails such as mimosas and bloody marys from 8 to 11 a.m.

Whether you are on a date or with your family, you are more than likely to find just what you’re looking for – from food to ambiance – at the Boathouse.

The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill is located at 5819 Driftwood Parkway in Cape Coral. By boat, it’s at Marker 78, or where the Flamingo Canal empties into the Caloosahatchee River. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Breakfast is from 8 to 10 a.m., with Last Call from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Private parties can be accommodated. Call-ahead seating is available. For more information, call 239-945-2628 or visit TheBoathouseUSA. com. The Boathouse has a second location in east Fort Myers, located at 17101 FL-31.

Three new restaurants coming to Cape Coral, Fort Myers area

As summer heats up, so does the Southwest Florida foodie scene. Here’s the latest hot off the press …

Kickstands Pub & Grub

This new restaurant rolling onto Pine Island will take over Fine Swine’s former spot just south of the island’s center on Stringfellow Road in St. James City.

“We’re going to try to open at the end of July, beginning of August,” said Sheila Breech, the co-owner along with her husband David. “It’ll be a bar and restaurant. We’ll have a band on weekends once or twice a month.”

The couple are motorcycle enthusiasts and hope to bring their passion to the new venture.

“We would love it to become a motorcycle destination,” Breech said. “We want motorcyclists to come, relax, have fun and eat some food. We will pave half the parking lot for motorcycles.”

On the menu?

“It’ll be American food, casual dining,” Breech added. “Barbecue, sliders, pizza , subs, wings and a dinner menu. We will bake our own bread for subs, make the pizza dough, cut our own fries. There will be beer and wine.”

David is no stranger to the restaurant business. His family owned and operated Rofini’s in Columbus, Ohio, since the late 1950s.

The couple has big plans for their new family-oriented space.

“An outside tiki is coming,” Sheila said. “It’ll be off the front — off the east side and around to the south side. We’ll open before it’s done though.”

While the freshly painted bright orange side of the building is an eye-catcher, the inside has been repainted from orange to beige, “a nice earth tone.”

“It’s been a long journey,” said Breech, who signed a lease in January. “We’re getting there.”

Follow Kickstands Pub & Grub on Facebook for the latest updates.

The flavors of Louisiana are heading to Cape Coral. A ground-breaking ceremony for this Cajun-inspired sports bistreaux was held June 20 at 1127 SW Pine Island Road. Curran Young Construction will build franchise owner Len Lemmer’s 8,900-square-foot restaurant across from Stevie Tomato’s Sports Page. It’s expected to open in the spring of 2025.

"We're confident it will become a go-to spot for residents and visitors alike, with more locations on the horizon," director of operations Tyler Lemmer said in a news release.

With 78 locations in 15 states (including six in Florida), Walk-On’s was founded in 2003 by Louisiana State basketball walk-ons Jack Warner and Brandon Landry. Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees is a co-owner in the company, while franchisees include Dak Prescott, Derrick Brooks and football coach Dabo Swinney.

Walk-On’s is known for its scratch-made food, wall-to-wall TVs, plus craft beer and cocktails, in a fun and family-friendly environment. Its wide-ranging menu includes starters (from gumbo and fried gator to boudin balls) tacos & wraps, sandwiches, salads, Louisiana classics (think crawfish etouffee and catfish, shrimp and redfish dishes), burgers, poboys and more.

"We love to build restaurants because they are places where our team, friends and family can enjoy long after it's been built,” Chris Curran, CEO of Curran Young Construction,  said in the news release. "With the menu and family atmosphere of Walk-On's, we know this is going to be wildly successful and we are thrilled to be part of it."

Oahu Fresh Bowls

The dates are set for the new Fort Myers location of Mike Cardascia’s popular Naples-based superfood café . A soft opening will be held Friday, June 28, for the fast-casual Hawaiian eatery in Palm Pointe Shoppes, just south of Page Field on Cleveland Avenue. Get 50 percent off bowls until the July 5 grand opening. To celebrate the official grand opening, the first 100 customers will receive one free acai for a year (one bowl per month).

Oahu is known for its poke bowls, burritos, acai soft serve, boba and more. Flaming Hot Cheetos Poké Burrito and the divine Berry Divine Organic Soft Serve Acai are just two of the popular signature items.

Hours in Fort Myers will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. 11621 S. Cleveland Ave., Suite 20, Fort Myers; (239) 331-2200; oahufreshbowls.com  and Facebook  for updates.

Jack’s Bar & Eatery

This month-old biker-themed restaurant is the latest to occupy the northeast corner of Hancock Bridge Parkway and Hunter Boulevard near Kurt Donaldson Community Park in North Fort Myers. It’s in the former home of Perico’s, K’ Rico’s, Tropical Tiki, El Mazorcazo and more. Open daily, Jack’s daytime menu features starters (wings, tacos, nachos and more), salads, wraps and pitas, burgers, sandwiches, signature loaded tots, and entrees from steaks to seafood. The late-night menu is appetizer, sandwich and tots focused. The covered, open-air outdoor area features a spacious bar, plenty of TVs and ice cold drinks. Another bar is located inside the expansive dining room. There’s a game room too. 2401 Hancock Bridge Parkway, North Fort Myers; (239) 257-1685; jacksbars.com

La Taperia Mediterranean Cuisine

After Tamara Gonzales and her husband Marcos Valdes found success with their catering company, La Taperia in Miami, the couple decided to try it on in the Fort Myers area. The couple, who had various restaurants in Spain, paired with Spanish chef Alberto Esteban in this newest venture. Specializing in Mediterranean food like paellas and Spanish tapas, they’re doing small private events for eight or more to begin with. Find their mouthwatering menu on Instagram

Malinche Mexican Cuisine

Jorge and Antonio Salazar opened this Bonita Springs Mayan and pre-Hispanic-inspired restaurant in the former Metro Diner space on Bonita Beach Road two years ago today. The Boathouse Tiki Bar and Grill

The Boathouse serves up the freshest seafood with waterfront dining at Cape Coral's Yacht Club Beach!

Located where KC's Riverstop used to be, this tiki bar and grill has expanded the space and changed the menu.

Boathouse Tiki Bar and Grill has the same owners as the popular Ford's Garage.

I went with a group of friends one evening just as the rain stopped.  There was a beautiful rainbow ...... and it looked like it ended right at the Boat House!  I would say it's true that there's treasure at the end of a rainbow, because we had such a good time.

The food was delicious, you can't beat the views, and the servers were friendly and accommodating.

All dining is outdoors with high tops, regular tables and bar seating.  Some of the seating is under the cover of 2 huge tiki huts and some of it is out in the open at tables that have umbrellas.

There are 2 bars, one at either end of the restaurant.  No matter where you sit though, you'll love the water views of the Caloosahatchee River.

You'll find appetizers, soups, salads, seafood baskets, sandwiches, burgers, and paninis.   Prices for entrees range from $8.95-$19.95.

I got the Mahi Mahi Tacos, served in a basket that I thought was just the right portion size.

Members of my group gave thumbs up to the Pulled Pork, Caribbean Chicken Salad, and Mahi Mahi Sandwich.

You can also catch your own fish from the nearby pier ........ and Boathouse will cook it for you!

They have a place to gas up your boat and to dock on the side of the restaurant if you're out fishing or boating.

The bar serves signature and classic cocktails; draft, canned, and seasonal craft beers; red and white wines.

Two of their desserts looked intriguing .......... Key Lime Pie on a Stick and Orange Blossom Pie.   I tried the Key Lime Pie and it was pretty amazing!

Go for breakfast, they are open daily from 8AM-10PM.   Plans are in the works to open a snack cart right on the beach.

Park for free at the beach or pay a little extra for valet parking close to the restaurant.  By the way, you'll love the sunsets!

Take a look at what architects pitch for a redesigned Cape Coral Yacht Club

yacht club cape coral fl restaurant

New details, photos, and a video have emerged on the proposed changes to the Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park, changing it from an Old Florida feel to a 'Key West' vibe.

The city plans to present these updates on the Yacht Club at this week's committee of the whole meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in council chambers at 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.

Here's what we know.

Yacht Club changes explained

Cape Coral's  Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s, built and open just a few years after  the city's inception in 1957 by brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen .

In 2018, voters approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond. Part of that was intended for the Yacht Club.

The Cape Coral City Council originally planned to close and begin work on renovations for the park in  2021 .

But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the  high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule  as justification for moving forward with new buildings and amenities.

Longtime residents and former city officials opposed the plans - however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.

What's featured in the new Yacht Club?

The  current plans  include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new 14,500-square-foot resort-style pool.

Current parking at the park; including for boats, vehicles, and boat trailers, amounts to 551 total spaces.

The proposed changes would bring a four-story garage with approximately 685 parking spaces, 15 surface spaces at the main building, 46 boat trailers, and 158 boat slip spaces - totaling 904 parking spaces.

The new two-story community center would have 47,000 square feet and include a new ballroom, concession, history room, exterior balcony, storage and meeting space, and a multi-purpose hall.

Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much  as $100 million .

Demolition has begun

Cape Coral has already begun the work toward these changes as demolition started this month.

The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted to demolish and deconstruct the Yacht Club for $987,716.04.

The firm is also tasked with  preserving a portion  of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and interior doors.

Construction will  not affect the beach area.

What's next? When's the completion?

A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.

The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.

What agency inspects restaurants in Florida?

Routine regulation and inspection of restaurants is conducted by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The Department of Health is responsible for investigation and control of food-borne illness outbreaks associated with all food establishments.

How do I report a dirty restaurant in Florida?

If you see abuses of state standards, report them and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation will send inspectors. Call the Florida DBPR at 850-487-1395 or report a restaurant for health violations online .

Get the whole story at our restaurant inspection database .

What does all that terminology in Florida restaurant inspections mean?

Basic violations are those considered against best practices.

A warning is issued after an inspector documents violations that must be corrected by a certain date or within a specified number of days from receipt of the inspection report.

An administrative complaint is a form of legal action taken by the division. Insufficient compliance after a warning, a pattern of repeat violations or existence of serious conditions that warrant immediate action may result in the division initiating an administrative complaint against the establishment. Says the division website: "Correcting the violations is important, but penalties may still result from violations corrected after the warning time was over."

An emergency order — when a restaurant is closed by the inspector — is based on an immediate threat to the public. Here, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants director has determined that the establishment must stop doing business and any division license is suspended to protect health, safety or welfare of the public.

A 24-hour call-back inspection will be performed after an emergency closure or suspension of license.
