17 Spiritual Meanings When You Dream About Ghost

So, you settle into your bed for a good night’s sleep after a long day, then shortly after, you dream about a ghost and wake up trembling with fear and sweat trickling all over your body.

When you see ghosts in your dream, it means you must deal with an unresolved business, and the longer it takes, the more it haunts you. You may also dream about ghosts if you have nostalgia over a particular period; your sudden flashback to it instantly digs up bad memories you’ve been trying to forget, and it may even spur hatred for that person.

This article will help you understand everything about ghostly dreams, why they happen, and what they really mean.

Ghost Dreams and Their Interpretations

17 Ghost Dreams and Their Interpretations

We’ll help make sense of all the variations of your dreams about ghosts. This will not only allay your fears about them but also equip you to help others in the same situation.

1. Dreams of a Ghost Attacking You

If a ghost attacks you in a dream and it’s incessant, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re under a spiritual attack or dark influence. Instead, it symbolizes a deep-rooted fear of the unknown, a sign of anxiety and serious worry, especially if you’re the type that panics easily.

A ghost attacking you in your dream means it’s time to grab the bull by the horn and deal with the negative emotions like a champ so you can be more in sync and in control of your life’s affairs.

2. Dreams of Becoming a Ghost

So, you’re a ghost in your dream (yes, you’re the spooky thing scaring people away). It means you’re feeling very guilty or afraid of a particular thing in your past. Your inner voice is charging you to face your fears, address your emotions and deal with underlying issues causing this fearful dream.

3. Dreams of a Loved One Or Close Friends Ghost

If you see the ghost of a loved one in your dream, don’t start panicking, as it doesn’t necessarily mean the person is going to die or is already dead. It just means you have unresolved issues with that individual in your waking life.

Others believe that the dream is a sign that the person having the dream is in imminent danger of some friend’s malice or deception, and our advice is that you keep your cards close to your chest and be watchful of who you release information to.

4. Dreams of a Ghost Attacking You With Sharp Objects

Dreams of a Ghost Attacking You With Sharp Objects

If you dream of a ghost attacking you with sharp objects and it’s recurrent, it may mean you have issues from the past that still bother you a great deal, and the throwing of sharp tools indicates the destructive nature of the unresolved business.

It shows your anger, disappointment, and displeasure in somebody, and you’ve been coy about it because you don’t want it to have negative impacts on your relationship . Your frustrated mind is the ghost attacking you in your sleep.

5. Dreams of a Ghost-Wearing Black Robe

When you dream of ghosts in black robes, it means your subconscious mind is trying to advise you to be conscious of deceit and treachery among your close friends .

6. A Ghost Drowning In Your Dream

If this happens in your dream, it means you have overwhelming romantic feelings for someone or something, and you’re trying to remove yourself from the situation. You love your partner too much, and even when you’re broken up, it’s still difficult for you to move on from them.

7. Strangling a Ghost In Your Dream

When you strangle a ghost in your dream, you’ve successfully exposed a cunning and hypocritical personality masked as a friend in your life. But unfortunately, ghost dreams are also closely associated with deceit and hypocrisy.

And when a ghost strangles you , it means someone close to you is making attempts to manipulate you against your will.

8. Abducted By Ghosts In Your Dream

If ghosts catch you in your sleep, it may mean you have sleep paralysis, especially if you can’t move or lift your hand in the room. But hold that thought; sleep paralysis is not as scary as it sounds.

Sleep paralysis is simply a total relaxation of your muscles in sleep which may cause you to wake up with the feeling that someone is sitting on your chest or lurking nearby; you may also feel an unfamiliar presence in your room; in this state, you really can’t control anything or fight back in your dream.

9. Seeing a Ghost At a Distance In Your Dream

Seeing a Ghost At a Distance In Your Dream

Dreams are warnings, and when you see a ghost at a distance in it, it means you’re being warned to be careful of pretensions and scams. But, unfortunately, your close relations usually attempt to play you, and if you take a careless step, you’ll get in trouble.

A ghost at a distance also means that you’re about to discover a strange happening right under your nose that you’ve not known for a long time.

10. Dreaming of a Ghost Walking By

A ghost passing by in your dream indicates your fears of failure at achieving your goals, meeting up with someone, or even speaking at an event. You’re concerned about your future and whether you’ll make it.

11. Dreaming That You’re Not Scared of a Ghost

So, you see a ghost in your dream , but you’re not visibly shaken. This heroic display means you’ll hear some good news in no time, and it’ll come as a complete surprise. That piece of unexpected information will help add to your joy and happiness.

This dream also shows the possibility of an amicable relationship with love, respect, perfect understanding, and reciprocated love.

12. Befriending a Ghost In Your Dream

Making friends with a ghost in your dream tells you of an auspicious period of your life that you should expect. You should look forward to positive things like matters working out in your favor, the smooth outcome of cases, and ease in scaling obstacles.

13. Making Friends With A Female Ghost In A Dream

This dream is as straightforward as they come. Befriending a female ghost in a dream means you’re going through a challenging time involving your emotions in the waking world, and these thoughts are overwhelming, so they come to play in the dream world.

14. A Ghost Helping You In A Dream

When a ghost helps you in your dream, it indicates increasing fortune and good luck, so if you’re in a fix at this period or going through a pretty rough time, you should be filled with optimism and hope that it won’t last for long, and it’ll soon be washed away.

15. Kissing A Ghost In Your Dream

Kissing A Ghost In Your Dream

Sharing a kiss with a ghost in your dream means you’re living in a fantasy world and expecting too much from people in your life and life itself. To prevent complete disappointment and dashed hope, we encourage you to lower your expectations to realistic outcomes, so you don’t intentionally dampen your spirit.

16. Dreams of a Faceless Ghost

When you dream of faceless ghosts , it means you’re deeply angered by something, and you have no clue what it is since you can’t see the face. Your emotions are not coordinated and in sync.

17. Dreams of a Ghost Following You

A ghost following you continuously in your dream indicates major issues in your romantic relationship, especially trust issues. You can’t seem to get past suspecting your significant other about their past lover, which bothers you.

You shouldn’t let this matter stay for long without talking with your partner about where you currently stand and how things are going. It may just be your fear taking center stage, and it may destroy your happy romance.

Visitation Dreams and How To Identify Them

As stated earlier, some ghostly dream experiences are too real to be true and very vivid. This could mean an actual ghost has just visited you in your dreams, and clinical psychologists have described it as ‘striking emotionally intense dreams in which a recently deceased loved one returns to provide guidance, reassurance, and warning.”

Patrick McNamara , an associate professor at Boston University School of Medicine has stated that visitations dreams are vivid, intense, and experienced as real visits when the dreamer wakes up.

These dreams are clear and very specific, and the experience in the waking world forever changes the dreamers.

We’ll be checking 6 ways to help you determine if your ghost dream is a visitation dream and how to make sense of them. Check them out below.

  • If the dream is intense and almost real-life experience
  • The memory of the dream sticks, and you can’t seem to forget a detail
  • The dream contained crystal-clear messages
  • You wake up with intense emotions that may either be bad or good.
  • The dream helps you get closure, directly or indirectly.
  • You must pay attention to the details of this dream to get what it’s trying to convey and if it’s relevant to your current predicament.

Final Thoughts

Dreams are not one-way traffic, so don’t overthink things just yet. However, if a ghost appears in your dream and it feels more like a vision than an actual dream, they may be trying to visit you in the astral planes of dreams to convey a message.

So, whether you’re making actual contact with these beings or getting the dreams because of your hyperactive imagination, dreams about ghosts can be very helpful and healing, pointing you in the right direction to handle current situations and circumstances.

Your incessant night visions want you to be aware of jealous people around you and let go of those resentments and feelings of guilt.

What Does It Mean When You Dream About Ghosts?

woman awake in bed

Everyone dreams, and analyzing those dreams can be very interesting and even quite telling, too. Dreams are images and scenarios that play out in our minds while we sleep, and many people can have around four to six dreams each night. Of course, we don't always remember them. There are various types of dreams, and they can bring about a plethora of emotions (via WebMD ). The most vivid dreams occur during the sleep state known as REM or rapid eye movement.

Lucid dreams, meanwhile, happen when the brain is at a midway point between being awake and falling into REM sleep. A lucid dream is when the dreamer knows and understands that they are having a dream. Some people who experience this are even able to guide their dreams and take control of situations within these visions. Meanwhile, nightmares are the worst kind of dream. They usually happen during periods of high emotion, stress, trauma, or conflict.

Bad dreams can also be brought on by medication, drugs, or illness. They're typically quite jarring and scary for the dreamer, who may wake feeling anxious or worried as a result. While some dreams occur for no reason at all, others are a way to process emotions or solve problems, per The Sleep Doctor . Some even believe that dreams help us to form memories and keep the brain sharp and focused during waking hours. Interpreting dreams is slightly more complicated. So, what does it mean when we dream about ghosts?

There are plenty of common dream interpretations

According to Psych Central , dreams can be a way for a person to learn more about themselves, as well as understand their mental health and emotional state . For those who want to analyze their dreams, keeping a notebook and pen by the bedside can be helpful. Writing down everything you can remember about the dream will be useful while trying to interpret it later. Talking to someone you trust about your dreams may also be a way to work through what they mean.

There are some themes that tend to be common in many people's dreams . Images of teeth falling out can translate to unfulfilled desire, for instance. Meanwhile, seeing a UFO in your dream could mean that someone or something may be invading your life, according to  Oprah.com . Elsewhere,  Mind Body Green  contends that premonition dreams could be a sign that you have intuitive abilities, while dreams of being naked may mean you're feeling exposed and/or freed.

While some dreams leave us feeling happy when we wake up, others can be unsettling or even spooky. One such dream that some people may experience involves ghosts. Dreaming about a ghost is said to have several meanings.

Dreaming of ghosts could mean you have unfinished business

Dreaming about the ghost of someone you knew or just spirits, in general, may be accompanied by an uneasy feeling. However, dreaming of ghosts actually has some very interesting interpretations. One main theme that accompanies ghost dreams is that of something left unfinished. "Dreaming about a ghost tends to refer to unfinished business you need to deal with because it is 'haunting' you,'" dream expert Theresa Cheung told  Bustle . Cheung also argued that dreaming of a passed loved one can provide a sense of closure.

Meanwhile, Miller's Guild asserts that ghost dreams could mean you have unspoken fears that you're suppressing or even feelings of jealousy in your everyday life. For those suffering from illness, dreaming of ghosts could be their waking thoughts about death manifesting in their sleep. Another theme surrounding ghost dreams is uncertainty or confusion about decisions that need to be made. Regretting past decisions could also cause someone to dream of spirits.

Learning Mind notes that dreaming of ghosts could also be someone's way of grieving a lost loved one or even being visited by that person's spirit. Looking for clues and symbols in your dreams may help you figure out exactly why you're dreaming of ghosts. According to Better Help , speaking with a dream and sleep expert could be beneficial if dreams of ghosts are causing you any worry or anxiety.

The 11 Most Common Nightmare Subjects

Insects, bizarre objects, pursuers, and more..

Updated August 11, 2023 | Reviewed by Gary Drevitch

  • Nightmares are more intense than other bad dreams, and cause the dreamer to wake up.
  • Well-designed research has identified the most common categories of terrifying dreams.
  • Nightmares could be your brain's attempt to rehearse a response to dangerous situations.

Tero Vesalainen/Adobe Stock

Nightmares are defined as very upsetting dreams that cause the dreamer to wake up. They are different from simply bad dreams, which are more common and less emotionally intense. The strong emotions that come with nightmares can linger after you're awake, such as when you wake up from being chased and it takes several minutes for your nervous system to calm down.

Researchers have examined the themes that show up in nightmares. In one major study, 331 participants wrote down every dream they remembered for 2 to 5 weeks, resulting in nearly 10,000 dream records ( Robert & Zadra, 2014 ). Here are the most common themes that emerged. (The percentages total more than 100 because roughly half of nightmares involved two themes. These nightmares were "idiopathic," meaning they did not have a known trigger, such as trauma .)

  • Physical Aggression (48.6 percent). Nearly half of all nightmares involved a threatened or actual physical attack by another person—by far the most common nightmare theme. Examples include being kidnapped or assaulted.
  • Interpersonal Conflict (21.0 percent). The second-most common theme also involved negative experiences with another person, but without overt violence—for example, an intense argument or being insulted or humiliated.
  • Failure or Helplessness (16.2 percent). Nightmares with this theme involve being blocked in some way from reaching a goal. For example, you might make a horrible mistake that you can't recover from, or lose your ability to speak.
  • Being Chased (11.1 percent). Running from a threatening force is a classic nightmare theme. The pursuer (who might be bizarrely fast) gets closer and the terror builds as escape seems impossible.
  • Evil Presence (11.1 percent). Next was the presence of an evil force, such as a ghost or monster. These nightmares might also be about a sensed presence with no visible creature, or about being possessed by the evil presence.
  • Health-Related Concerns and Death (9.1 percent). You or someone you love is terribly sick or injured, or dies in the nightmare. A classic health-related nightmare is that your teeth are breaking or falling out.
  • Accidents (8.7 percent). This variety of nightmare can involve a car crash, falling off a cliff, or any other unintentional act that leads to danger or harm. Most people have been startled awake in the middle of a falling nightmare.
  • Apprehension/Worry (8.7 percent). Sometimes you might not know what the threat is, but you have a growing sense of unease. For example, I've woken up from a nightmare in which I suddenly realized that Something Very Bad was about to happen, but there was no specific feared outcome that I could point to.
  • Insects/Vermin (6.7 percent). The animals you find gross or dirty in real life, such as rats, flies, spiders, or snakes, can show up in your terrifying dreams. Sometimes the horror comes from an infestation, such as a trash can full of maggots, while other times you'll dream of being bitten or stung.
  • Disaster/Calamity (5.5 percent). A fire or a flood would fall into this category, along with bigger disasters like tidal waves or tornadoes.
  • Environmental Abnormality (4.7 percent). Finally, some nightmares are about implausible events around the dreamer that couldn't happen in real life. For example, you might dream that your bedroom dresser suddenly doubles in size. The bizarreness of these abnormalities contributes to the feeling of terror.

While none of these types of nightmares is pleasant, the authors of the study offer one possible consolation: Nightmares may function to prepare you to handle real-life threats. By confronting the threats in the safe (though terrifying) setting of dreams, your mind could be helping you to rehearse for problems that actually arise. However, this explanation is unlikely to account for all nightmares—for example, why would you need to practice responding to bedroom furniture that spontaneously grows? More research is needed to understand the possible connections between nightmare content and real-life threats.

A nightmare is a disturbing dream associated with negative feelings, such as anxiety or fear that awakens you. Nightmares are common in children but can happen at any age. Occasional nightmares usually are nothing to worry about.

Nightmares may begin in children between 3 and 6 years old and tend to decrease after the age of 10. During the teen and young adult years, girls appear to have nightmares more often than boys do. Some people have them as adults or throughout their lives.

Although nightmares are common, nightmare disorder is relatively rare. Nightmare disorder is when nightmares happen often, cause distress, disrupt sleep, cause problems with daytime functioning or create fear of going to sleep.

You're more likely to have a nightmare in the second half of your night. Nightmares may occur rarely or more frequently, even several times a night. Episodes are generally brief, but they cause you to awaken, and returning to sleep can be difficult.

A nightmare may involve these features:

  • Your dream seems vivid and real and is very upsetting, often becoming more disturbing as the dream unfolds.
  • Your dream storyline is usually related to threats to safety or survival, but it can have other disturbing themes.
  • Your dream awakens you.
  • You feel scared, anxious, angry, sad or disgusted as a result of your dream.
  • You feel sweaty or have a pounding heartbeat while in bed.
  • You can think clearly upon awakening and can recall details of your dream.
  • Your dream causes distress that keeps you from falling back to sleep easily.

Nightmares are only considered a disorder if you experience:

  • Frequent occurrences
  • Major distress or impairment during the day, such as anxiety or persistent fear, or bedtime anxiety about having another nightmare
  • Problems with concentration or memory, or you can't stop thinking about images from your dreams
  • Daytime sleepiness, fatigue or low energy
  • Problems functioning at work or school or in social situations
  • Behavior problems related to bedtime or fear of the dark

Having a child with nightmare disorder can cause significant sleep disturbance and distress for parents or caregivers.

When to see a doctor

Occasional nightmares aren't usually a cause for concern. If your child has nightmares, you can simply mention them at a routine well-child exam. However, consult your doctor if nightmares:

  • Occur frequently and persist over time
  • Routinely disrupt sleep
  • Cause fear of going to sleep
  • Cause daytime behavior problems or difficulty functioning

Nightmare disorder is referred to by doctors as a parasomnia — a type of sleep disorder that involves undesirable experiences that occur while you're falling asleep, during sleep or when you're waking up. Nightmares usually occur during the stage of sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The exact cause of nightmares is not known.

Nightmares can be triggered by many factors, including:

  • Stress or anxiety. Sometimes the ordinary stresses of daily life, such as a problem at home or school, trigger nightmares. A major change, such as a move or the death of a loved one, can have the same effect. Experiencing anxiety is associated with a greater risk of nightmares.
  • Trauma. Nightmares are common after an accident, injury, physical or sexual abuse, or other traumatic event. Nightmares are common in people who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Sleep deprivation. Changes in your schedule that cause irregular sleeping and waking times or that interrupt or reduce the amount of sleep you get can increase your risk of having nightmares. Insomnia is associated with an increased risk of nightmares.
  • Medications. Some drugs — including certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, beta blockers, and drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease or to help stop smoking — can trigger nightmares.
  • Substance misuse. Alcohol and recreational drug use or withdrawal can trigger nightmares.
  • Other disorders. Depression and other mental health disorders may be linked to nightmares. Nightmares can happen along with some medical conditions, such as heart disease or cancer. Having other sleep disorders that interfere with adequate sleep can be associated with having nightmares.
  • Scary books and movies. For some people, reading scary books or watching frightening movies, especially before bed, can be associated with nightmares.

Risk factors

Nightmares are more common when family members have a history of nightmares or other sleep parasomnias, such as talking during sleep.

Complications

Nightmare disorder may cause:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness, which can lead to difficulties at school or work, or problems with everyday tasks, such as driving and concentrating
  • Problems with mood, such as depression or anxiety from dreams that continue to bother you
  • Resistance to going to bed or to sleep for fear you'll have another bad dream
  • Suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts

Dreams About Ghosts

What do ghosts mean in dreams, dream about ghosts.

Dreams About Ghosts

I often wake up feeling like my dreams were real. Unlike some people who barely remember theirs, I notice symbols in my dreams and wonder what they mean. It is my belief that dreams offer insight into the hidden turmoils and worries of our subconscious mind.

Did you dream of a ghost? Well, let’s face it there is a colorful history as a cultural symbol of “ghosts”, ghosts have haunted the collective human imagination for centuries, many people around the world have emailed me about having dreams about ghosts and other kinds of spirits, hinting at the possibility that these experiences may be signifying something much deeper within our own mind.

What Are Ghost Dreams Telling Me?

Sometimes having dreams about ghosts could indicate that there is an underlying illness which you either are aware of or not aware of. I know this seems a little crazy, but dreaming of ghosts can indicate that you are worried about death and dying --- your subconscious could be trying to alert you of any illness in a subtle manner by projecting this as a ghost in a dream. I don't want to freak you out (I am sure your fine) but just think about it at little --- have you been under stress recently for example?

Is the dream about ghosts good or bad?

Let me first start with the story of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, if you remember this film, this basically shows us themes of moral redemption and past regrets through the three spirits that visit Mr Ebenezer Scrooge. This dream is about more than just seeing a ghost. It is about your view of the world. Television shows such as American Horror Story and Supernatural further offer a glimpse into why this dream could have appeared. The "ghost" is just a message, telling you to think about how you act with others and the fact you have maybe "hidden" away in life. In our world, I'm sure you would agree that people have been fascinated by the mysteries that surround ghosts. Dreams are one way we try to understand them, with many different types of dreams featuring ghosts. Some dreams may show a friendly ghost that provides us with comfort and protection, while other dreams --- may show scary or wierd spirits that haunt and terrorize us. Ive had many emails from people about loved ones who have passed away, appearing as ghostly figures and it is my thought they appear to provide closure and peace. No matter the type of "ghost" dream, we can always learn something about ourselves --- this dream is about making sure you embrace the experience with an open mind and a sense of wonder. In many cultures, ghosts represent spiritual continuance, reflecting on the transitioning soul between this life and the afterlife, or even as messengers of the divine. Western Christianity, for instance, associates ghosts with the wandering and often tormented souls of deceased people, whilst various African tribal beliefs incorporate ancestor worship and communication with the spirit world.

Why are you dreaming of ghosts?

Ghosts have long been seen in our dream world and it is not a mistake that you have had this dream. I also feel that dreams of ghosts are symbols of our mind, and provide a "hidden" meaning, I'm sure you will agree that dreams are seen as cultural symbols; seeing a ghost can suggest unhidden experiences. At times, our own worries can haunt us in dreams, and can make things seem “strange” — and in fact, these sorts of dreams are often caused by trying to reflect on our own problems in life. I’d like to remind you of a film called "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens if you remember this lovely childhood film included three spirits that basically showing a kind of moral redemption. What I love about this film is that it  outlines past regrets of the main character: Ebenezer Scrooge.  He realises that he needs to change himself. That is why I feel that the dream is about understanding your "morals" and how these can shape you going forward, and what you need to do to CHANGE who you are in order to get what you want from life. If we take a massive step back in regards to this dream, clearly we have long been intrigued by ghosts and their presence in our world (see Netflix it always has a serious of ghosts or ghostly shows). Dreams can bring us all sorts of odd or wierd stuff but it could be on what we watched during the day.

Dreams could feature loved ones who have passed away appearing as ghostly figures to provide closure and provide closure and peace. No matter "what" the dream type, we can always learn something about ourselves and our relationship to the unknown by exploring the dream's symbolic focus --- and our emotional responses in the dream. What I am saying here, is that if you are scared then this can mean you are scared about something in life. Remember to embrace each experience with an open mind and sense of curiosity. Iv'e covered quite a bit already, ghosts often represent spiritual continuity between lives or even divine messengers. Western Christianity links ghosts with wandering souls of the dead while some African tribal beliefs incorporate ancestor worship as well as communication with spirits in dreams.

What does seeing a ghost mean in a dream?

I feel is a manifestation of anxiety in waking life — I also believe that seeing a ghost in a dream is a sort of loss of control. Dreams allow us to understand our subconscious mind,  this is where our deepest fears, desires, and memories are stored.  I read when researching for this article that people in China believe that seeing a ghost in a dream is a sign of possible danger or death, while the West see it as a symbol of unfinished business or unresolved emotions. The fact remains that seeing a ghost in a dream can be a powerful and really crazy experience. If the dream is about being possessed by a ghost then this can indicate that you feel something is "talking you over" maybe some depressive thoughts. If you had a dream of being “possessed by a ghost” or seeing others “possessed” this can indicate that you may be looking at others for validation, but you need to watch your own thoughts going foward.

What does it mean to die and be a ghost in a dream?

To die and to become a ghost in a dream is not uncommon, and many people find themselves wondering what the hell it all means. Perhaps it is a reflection of your subconscious fears, or an attempt to come to terms with the reality of our own life. It can also mean that encountering a ghost in a dream can is a way for our loved ones who have passed on to communicate with us.

What does it mean to dream of a ghost from a biblical perspective?

I like to look at dreams from a biblical perspective, when we look at scripture there is deeper spiritual connotation attached to this “dream." In biblical times, ghosts were often associated with evil spirits or demons, and dreaming of one could be a sign that one is being spiritually attacked. The Bible warns against dabbling in the ohe ghost from a biblical perspective could mean that you need to watch out for others. Don't look too much into this but could just mean you need to be aware of others.

What does it mean to dream of a ghost visiting you or your house?

Dreaming of a ghost visiting you or appearing in your house could be an indication that you're feeling overwhelmed with stress and responsibility right now and the sad fact is that sometimes people just want too much from us. Maybe something is weighing on your subconscious mind that leaves you feeling haunted and tired, as if there's no end to the cycle of hard work or obligations. You may feel like you’re being visited by a ghost because of how unresolved this issue feels to you right now, but also that you need to drag your hot ass out the door in order to either rekindle love or find someone new.

I also think dreams about ghosts can mean our fears about mortality and death in general—especially when these ghostly beings appear in our home, since this place (in our hearts) is typically associated with feelings of safety and security. In this case, the dream might be indicating an unease within yourself about life coming to a close someday; although we all know death will eventually come for us all, it’s still scary to confront that mortality head-on in our minds while dreaming but this is about the fact that you might feel you wish to escape in some way in life.

I find myself overwhelmed by fear sometimes too when I'm considering my own eventual death (and what comes after). But I think it's important to remember two key points: firstly, worrying constantly won't bring us any closer or further away from death; no matter how much we contemplate life beyond the physical (real world) here on earth, we'll never really know until it happens ourselves. And secondly: living an eternal existence isn't necessarily something bad—if anything, having some kind of conscious continuity after passing is likely quite profound if approached from a spiritual perspective!

I do feel though, after you have had this dream don’t let it eat away at you — remember that taking time for contemplation can lead us towards profound realizations forever so I feel if the ghost visited you or appeared in the home it is all about the way you want or need to change things around you to make your life more simple, and more importantly changing your mindset so it is more generous and expansive.

Conclusion - Dream about ghosts

Okay, right, let me conclude. To dream of ghosts could mean that you need to change in some way, that there is some sort of vulnerability. Dreams about ghosts can (I know you may not feel this) can be a rewarding vision — if you take the time to understand the deeper meaning behind it. Your spirit guides may have something to tell you that can help you in your daily life.

Dream About Ghost? (Interpretation & Spiritual Meaning)

Dream About Ghosts

Having ghost dreams is a common sight, but the ultimate interpretation will depend on what’s happening. Often, dreaming about spirits allows your emotions to surface and helps you confront deep fears and past issues.

Your night visions probably tell you to let go of guilt, hatred, and disappointment or be aware of jealous people around. Also, you may need to come to peace with a severe loss or lingering resentment.

So, if your dreams involve ghosts, it’s crucial to interpret them correctly. This article gives an overview of what messages you receive and how to proceed to a more meaningful life.

Dream About Ghosts (Interpretation & Spiritual Meaning)

A ghost in your dreams stands for a person or thing you cannot go over. Also, you may have unfounded fear or unfinished business. Still, meanings can vary depending on the circumstances in the dream. Below we explore the possible interpretations.

We all have our ‘other’ or subconscious side that expresses what we cannot in words. Since ghosts are supernatural and beyond our reach, they can stand for our concerns. This anxiety may be something you wouldn’t like to admit and want to suppress.

For example, you might be terrified of settling down or changing jobs. You can also be afraid of getting old or losing your beloved ones. Whatever is holding you down, it’s time to prevent your fears from making choices instead of you.

2. Unresolved Matters

Dreaming of ghost dreams may also refer to unfinished matters with other people. For instance, if you owe a substantial amount of money, it is likely to have nightmares with spirits trying to attack you. Such recurring dreams can be tormenting unless you resolve the issue quickly.

More so, if you have unresolved problems, these might haunt you in dreams. Consider reconciling with an old friend or telling the truth that’s been bothering you for years. Unfinished businesses can have a detrimental effect on your health.

3. Memories

When you are sentimental for a particular stage in your life, it can embody a ghost in your night spectacles. Something happened that stirred painful past events you believed were behind you.

Alternatively, some long-lone memories may be overwhelming because they are vital for your current waking life. Keep these resurfacing symbols in mind; they might be the crucial part of the puzzle you’re trying to complete.

4. Jealousy

Another negative connotation of ghost dreams is envy. Someone close to you is so jealous of your success that they’ll go to any lengths to take it from you. This envious person wants to take your job or can’t stand your achievements.

Hence, if you see a ghost with the face of somebody you know, take caution. The evil spirit you found familiar will not stop at anything. Their ultimate objective might be to destroy you.

5. Adventure

Since ghosts stand for the unknown, they may reveal your longings to explore new worlds. Maybe you’ve been in the comfort zone for too long and think it’s high time to turn a new page.

Basking in security is never challenging nor thrilling. You want to savor the unexplored aspects of life and make it more memorable. On the adverse side, ghost dreams represent your inclination to try out risky ideas.

Having ghost dreams is very common if you suffer from a severe disease. Since you often think about death, your fears manifest in your night visions. More so, the dream can warn you of a sickness you haven’t found out yet.

The most adverse interpretation of dreams about dark spirits foretells financial difficulties or problems in your private and professional life. You are about to face a significant loss or unexpected hardships.

7. Uncertainty

Night visions with phantoms can also embody your indecisiveness. Some circumstances are not clear enough, so you can’t reach the right decisions. Moreover, you’re uncertain about taking the next step and need somebody to confirm what course of action to take.

In many cases, ghosts appear in dreams when the person having them regrets a past decision. Or you have caused damage to somebody you can’t rectify any longer, and now your conscience is weighing you down.

Your mind indicates that something is haunting you, and you can’t move on. In symbolic words, your feeling of guilt keeps the spirit tied and won’t let it go. Think about previous mistakes that ward you off a carefree life. Make an effort to reconcile with your inner self.

Possible Scenarios

Once we have elaborated on the overall meaning of dreams involving ghosts , let’s look at the specifics of your dreamy spectacles. Below are the most frequent scenarios you may experience at night.

Chocked By A Ghost

Something or somebody is blocking your way to success. An insurmountable barrier such as a job contract or an incurable disease might prevent you from making your dreams come true. You can’t realize your plans and ideas unless you confront and bypass this obstacle.

Alternatively, getting strangled by a ghost represents your cowardice. You must come to terms with your choices and talk openly. Another course of action is to pay less attention to the past. Focus on future goals and be more direct in communicating your intentions.

Chased By A Ghost

Be wary of upcoming challenges in your life. The outcome of the situation will depend on how you manage the situation. Above all, you’re getting encouragement to face the obstacles on the path to success.

Another meaning of running away from a spirit is the inability to go over a diseased person. In other words, you can’t accept the way some things ended. Or you may be overly nostalgic to bring back past relics.

Haunted By A Ghost

Such nightmares indicate the issues you refuse to confront. The more you procrastinate resolving petty problems, the bigger the pile becomes. As a result, your progress slows down, and your vision gets clouded.

Leave the past behind and live in the present. Even if you have had a severe trauma that keeps coming back through your dreams, it’s time to face it. There’s no escaping from who we were or what we did, but we can restore harmony if we learn to live with it.

Attempting To Kill A Ghost

Disagreements with a family member or a friend are around the corner. Trying to destroy a spirit in your dreams means you have unresolved issues that need mending. Take steps to find a middle ground and get over long-term conflicts.

Several Ghosts Visiting

If you dream of several ghosts at once, you must let go of past emotional ties. An incident might have caused irreparable damage to your feelings and keeps coming back at a subconscious level. Consider resetting your priorities and improving your self-confidence.

Petrified By Ghosts

The chances that somebody usurps your authority are high. Also, you’re under significant stress in your professional or personal life. Hence, take a break to clear your thoughts and change your perspectives.

Then, check who is causing you trouble. You must be extra vigilant as somebody else may be trying to steal your achievements and put you in the shade.

Screaming Ghosts

Take this spectacle as a warning for excessive pressure. Friends or colleagues force you to go against your code and take action you wouldn’t dare to under normal circumstances. Be extra careful of such two-faced people around you and resist the temptation regardless of peer pressure.

Faceless Ghosts

You feel tension and unrest but have no idea what’s causing it. Also, your efforts haven’t received any acknowledgment, although you invest a lot of energy. Your dreams urge you to endure this period and realize your goals because success is on the cards.

Becoming A Ghost

A demanding job or a smothering relationship urges you to escape reality. You want to disappear from your life and unburden yourself. The only way out is to lower your expectations or let everybody know how overwhelmed you are.

Alternatively, you feel shame or guilt. You are unhappy about a past event, or a bad habit emerges when least expected. Again, don’t let these emotions derail you but focus on future goals and projects.

Ghost Of A Living Person

Have you seen a close person embodied in a spirit? You need to take ultimate care. This friend or relative may have hidden intentions against you. If you don’t want to get disappointed, keep the unpleasant companion far from your daily life. Refrain from sharing vital information, too.

Flying Ghosts

People who see ghosts in the skies will hear some unfortunate news. You may even find out that a close friend or relative has deceased. Alternatively, get ready to go through a challenging period with a chain of mishaps.

Ghost In A Flowing Robe

This dream has several meanings. First, if the spirit was female and the dress white, a friend of yours may get ill soon. A dark robe stands for treachery by someone you know.

Another interpretation for a long flowing dress is a mixture of prosperity and sorrow. Expect a misfortune with a happy outcome. For example, you might end your relationship but find the true love of your life.

Deceased Person Ghost

Often, seeing a dead person falls under the bracket of visitation dreams. Yet, that’s not always the case. In some instances, your subconscious might attempt to come to terms with a death you can’t accept. This vision can be highly appeasing and therapeutic.

Another meaning is that the past is haunting you. Perhaps you feel guilty or sorry about your choices. The feeling of remorse won’t leave you unless you decide to carry on regardless of previous mistakes and failures.

Disappearing Ghost

Dreaming of a ghost that vanished once you touch it means you’re not ready to confront your fears. Though you try to surface painful memories and repressed emotions, something is still missing. Take another approach if you want to overcome emotional issues luring inside you.

Haunted House

Some unpleasant events are about to unravel. If the house in the dreams is yours, you will feel frustrated and anxious about things beyond your control. Turmoil dwells inside you, and you find it challenging to reach self-balance at home.

Also, you must deal with a few childhood issues to get over an identity crisis. Bad memories you refuse to accept are holding you back. Consider acknowledging these emotions to leave the unease behind.

Friendly Ghost

Take this dream as an indication of your loneliness. You lack some real friends and need to improve your social life. Go out more often and meet new acquaintances.

Fighting A Ghost

You have a conflict with your inner self. Fortunately, the dream foretells that you will win the game and overcome any hurdles on your way to success. Moreover, the odds that your finances and health will improve soon are high. Your relationships might strengthen, too.

White Ghost

You will hear good news and encounter joy and peace. As a result, your mood will lighten up, and you might decide to make a drastic change. Substantial steps will lead to overall progress.

Black Ghost

Black and evil spirits in dreams foreshow deceit. You could fall victim to malicious plots if you make rash decisions. Be aware since your health may be in danger, and you’re likely to suffer severe losses and hardships.

Bottom Line

As mysterious and scary ghosts may appear in your dreams, they don’t always foretell misfortunes. These nightmares often stand for a significant change in your life or upcoming success. More so, seeing ghosts when asleep can release your deepest feelings and help you deal with the unrest.

Your subconscious is trying to get your attention.

Read on to find out the most common nightmare meanings and what they’re trying to tell you about you...

Sleep is supposed to a be a restorative time that allows our bodies and minds to recharge from day-to-day happenings. But having a nightmare changes all of that. Dreams involving scary, stressful, or triggering scenarios can leave us gasping for air upon waking up — which is obviously upsetting. But dreams are simply a manifestation of our subconscious minds, so understanding the meaning of the most common nightmares is important.

In most cases, common nightmare meanings relate to fears that we experience in our waking lives, both symbolically and directly. While some night frights are simply the result of watching too many horror movies before bed, many can actually be used as a subconscious compass that’ll point us toward areas of our lives that need some attention or healing. Discovering the meaning of your nightmares can help to illuminate your repressed or unchecked fears — and once you figure out the meaning of a bad dream and address the underlying issue, you’re less likely to experience it again.

“Nightmares are actually the most important dreams of all, as they’re caused by our most difficult and uncomfortable real-life issues,” Lauri Quinn Loewenberg , professional dream analyst and author of Dream On It , tells Bustle. “They’re shining a light on something your subconscious wants you to correct — so instead of fearing nightmares, look at them as a brutally honest best friend who may be telling you something you don't want to hear, but is [ultimately] for your benefit.”

Next time you wake up from a creepy dream, channel the stress into a subconscious study by writing down the details and doing some DIY dream interpretation work . Read on to find out the most common nightmare meanings and what they’re trying to tell you about your waking life.

Feeling Like You’re Falling

Almost all of us have been abruptly woken from sleep with the visceral (and heart-pounding) sensation that we’re falling into a bottomless void. Dreams about falling often correspond with situations in which we feel unsupported or like we’re floundering. “This indicates that something in real life is bringing you down — perhaps plans fell through, someone disappointed you, or a relationship ended,” Loewenberg says. “Whatever the case, it's a cry from your subconscious to find a way to turn these free-falling emotions around.”

Not Being Able To Speak

Being unable to speak in a dream or scream for help is often a nightmarish metaphor for feeling helpless or silenced about something in your waking life. “You are either not being heard in real life or you simply aren't speaking up,” Loewenberg says. “Where in your life does it feel like you have no say in the matter? Your subconscious wants you to find your voice, speak your truth, and be heard.”

Having Your Teeth Fall Out

If you’ve ever had a nightmare about your teeth falling out , getting knocked loose, or being missing, it could indicate that you’re feeling vulnerable about sharing a little too much information about something private. “Dreams that involve any part of the mouth (teeth being the most common) are usually connected to communication issues,” Loewenberg says. “Teeth are meant to remain fixed in our mouth, so when they fall out in a dream, it is often a side effect of loose speech in real life — meaning we may have allowed something out of our mouth that should have stayed put!” If you’re feeling insecure about any recent conversations, do your best to clear the air.

Being Chased

If there’s something important that you’re scared to deal with or a pressing issue that you’re repressing, it might manifest as a nightmare about being chased . “Running from something or someone in a dream is directly connected to avoidance in real life,” Loewenberg says. “What difficult issue are you running from? Is there something from your past you are trying to get away from? The way to make this dream stop is to face the issue.” Mustering up the courage to face the situation will likely cause the bad dreams to let up.

Dying Or Dealing With Death

Having a nightmare about your own death or the death of a loved one can be unsettling, but dreaming about dying usually just means you’re undergoing some sort of personal transformation. “To the dreaming mind, death is the end of life as you now know it, so it means something in your life is changing or coming to an end,” Loewenberg says. “These dreams allow us to recognize the changes so that we can let go of what is no longer needed and embrace what is to come.” Change, like death, is inevitable — and these nightmares can help us to better accept that.

Being Naked In Public

Realizing you’ve left the house without any pants on would be panic-inducing in more ways than one — and if this happens in a dream, it likely means you’re feeling self-conscious or over-exposed about something in your waking life. “Any sort of real-life situation that causes you to feel judged and scrutinized seems to be the main reason people dream of being naked in public ,” Loewenberg says. “Pay close attention to the other people in your naked dream — you may find that no one else seems to notice or care, which is a reminder that you are giving way too much thought and energy to how others perceive you.”

Seeing A Dead Person

Whether it’s a nightmare about a ghost , a dead body, or a loved one who has passed on in real life, having a Sixth Sense -esque “I see dead people” moment in a dream is super creepy — and it can mean different things, depending on the context. “A corpse in a dream would symbolize something in your life that is now over and done with, that you can now bury and move on from,” Loewenberg says. “If you dream of a person you know who has died , then it could either be part of your grief process or that person could represent some quality that you identify with.” You’ll have to analyze your own dream symbols to figure out what your subconscious is telling you.

Creepy Clowns

Coulrophobia (aka the fear of clowns) is very real — but whether or not their painted-on grins and ominous cheer give you the heebie-jeebies in real life, a nightmare about clowns can help you get more serious about life. “Clowns in dreams usually represent a part of yourself or someone you’re currently dealing with that isn’t taking something seriously enough,” Loewenberg says. “Ask yourself where in your life you need to buckle down and be more disciplined.”

Being In A Car Crash

Most of us have to drive everyday to get to work, run errands, and live life — but dreaming about a car crash or being at the whim of an out-of-control driver can make the mundane feel morbid. “This kind of dream can be caused by feeling like you have no control over something in waking life,” Loewenberg says. “What situation, behavior, or relationship is not going in the direction you want it to? Time to figure out if you need to change tactics or just let go.”

Creepy Crawlers

Dreaming about spiders , snakes, or other creepy crawlers is really common. Whether you’re being bitten, chased, or crawled on, these insect- and animal-laden nightmares often represent a human being — likely someone that has a negative or threatening energy. “Both spiders and snakes are common symbols for a toxic person in your life,” Loewenberg says. Think through your relationships and the context of the dream and figure out if there’s something in your life who’s making you feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or like you’re crawling in your skin.

13 Dreams About Ghosts : Meaning & Interpretation

Dreaming about ghosts is never pleasant in most cases. Often times the dream is a nightmare and usually makes you wake up shaking in cold sweat along with strong feelings of fear.  Most people wake up and even feel afraid of their surroundings. They look around in fear expecting to see the ghost(s) they saw in their dream.

Reasons Why We Have Ghost Dreams

The above examples show that ghost dreams are not just for kids with overactive imaginations. Most adults and teenagers get them every now and then. There are many reasons why we experience ghost dreams and some of them are as follows:

  • Boozing Before Sleeping

You might have gone on a drinking binge in town and came home very drunk then went straight to bed. Alcohol according to many sleep experts is a great cause of nightmares.

The booze will suppress the rapid eye movement which happens a lot when we dream and as the body absorbs the alcohol, dreaming comes back and often times the dreams become intense nightmares.

  • Read more:  #8 Witnessing Violence In Dreams – Meaning and Interpretation

The alcohol will also relax the upper airway and might cause strain when it comes to regular breathing. This will create a situation where you dream of a drowning, being chased or feeling suffocated.

A story then creates itself around the situation where you dream that a ghost is suffocating you, drowning you in the bathtub or chasing you.

  • You Are Sleeping In A New Place

You might be sleeping in your friend’s home, a hotel or even at a campsite. A change in setting has been known to cause anxiety and when such an element of confusion finds its way in your dreams, you shouldn’t be surprised when a ghost features somewhere there.

You might wake up more in the middle of the night because your sleep is being disrupted by nightmares featuring ghosts.

  • You Ate A Late Dinner

When you eat your dinner late and then sleep immediately, you might experience some sort of acid reflux which might disrupt your sleep. You might experience discomfort which disrupts sleeps and results in nightmares. Do not be surprised when you dream that a ghost has entered your body and rolling in your stomach.

The discomforts from the heavy dinner you had late which the body is trying to digest can result to a story where the ghost is squeezing your stomach or passing through your stomach to the other side behind you. They are spirits, after all, anything is possible.

  • You Are Under Great Stress

You might have gone to bed with worries of all your problems weighing heavily on your mind. You might have pressure at work, heavy financial problems, a serious illness or other forms of stressors.

Do not be surprised when a ghost(s) visits your dreams in different forms. The ghost could be of people you knew who died or simply scary ghosts unknown to you.

  • Read more:   15 Dreams About Demons

Remember stress and anxiety can come in various forms, from everyday things like moving to a new location, changing duties at work or school, failing at something, to more major life-changing things such as divorce, the death of a loved one or even the loss of a job you have been working at for many years.

  • A Bad Sleeping Position

Sleeping on your back has been known to cause sleeping disturbances and a high possibility of nightmares.  Sleeping on your back will cause your airway to be less stable and highly likely to collapse.

The need for adequate air during your sleep might cause you to feel suffocated, hence the scary ghost imagery in your dream. A change of sleeping positions might help you avert the bad dream.

  • A Past Traumatic Experience

A past traumatic experience often results in a recurring of your ghost dream. You might have experienced a horrific live event which is causing you to have a recurring ghost dream.

It could have been someone close to you dying, or a deadly accident where people died in mangled car wrecks for example.

You might dream of yourself at the scene several times and see the ghosts of the people who died.  You might also be seeing the ghost of this close loved one who you witnessed their death.

Such ghost dreams re-traumatize the dreamer and often make them feel like the horror is happening all over again but this time with the ghosts in the scene.

Seeking therapeutic treatments for such a case is often the best way to help the dreamer stop the horrifying ghost dreams.

  • A Past Mistake Haunting You

You might have done something bad in the past which you feel guilty of.  This mistake(s) could be haunting you during your waking time and then haunting your dreams as ghosts.

The problem could be a bad past relationship that led to great negative consequences, an incomplete project that you felt you should have completed.

The best thing would be to let bygones be bygones if you can’t change anything and find peace in your life. Freeing yourself from the regrets and past ties is the best way to have ghost-free and sweet dreams.

  • You Feel Disconnected In Your Life

Something that you like a lot might be out of reach and you might no longer have access to it.  You might also be feeling disconnected from your current world and simply going through the motions with no zest for life.

Dreaming of ghosts could be the wakeup call that you need to see things with greater clarity. It could also be a time for you to do away with the old way of doing things and embracing new ways of living, thinking and acting in situations.

  • You Watched and Read Ghost Content

If you read too many ghost novels, watched too many ghost movies then why wouldn’t your dreams have a ghost in them.

Your mind could have been reeling from the thrill of the ghost content you exposed yourself to and you went to bed thinking nothing else. The dream that followed is highly likely to feature ghosts.

  • You Are Obsessed With Ghost Things

You might be watching, reading and researching on all things ghost. You might even be visiting allegedly haunted places and hoping to see a ghost.

Watching all paranormal documentaries and even ghost images on your walls. If that is the case, then your dreams could be recurring ghost dreams, where you met ghosts and made your own paranormal documentary.

If ghost hunting isn’t your full-time job and you aren’t a professional researcher on the science behind dreams, the best thing would be to get a life and stop obsessing over ghost things.

  • A great fear Of Ghosts

You might also be suffering from phasmophobia which is the fear of ghosts or the unknown. You might be so consumed by the thought that your home might be haunted and this might affect the state of your life. If this is the case, you could experience panic attacks and recurring ghost dreams as a result.

  • Medications and Drugs

There are medications and drugs especially those that are known to influence neurotransmitters, that could affect your dreams and cause you to dream about ghosts which fall under the nightmare category. Antidepressants, barbiturates, and narcotics can contribute to your ghost nightmares.

It is also advisable to withdraw from drugs that affect REM sleep especially if your ghost nightmares are recurring. If after the change of drugs, your ghost nightmares still come, seek advice from your physician.

  • Severe Depression

People suffering from severe depression and a negative attitude have been known to experience nightmares featuring ghosts more frequently.

There was a recent Finnish study which proved that 28 percent of depression patients reported frequent nightmares compared to those who weren’t experiencing depression.

  • Personality

According to numerous studies, adults with personalities such as alienation, emotional estrangement, and distrustfulness are highly likely to have chronic ghost nightmares.

It has also been said that people with thinner personality boundaries and higher creativity are also highly likely to experience nightmares.

Common Dreams About Ghosts

There are common ghost dreams that people experience and from them, people can get various interpretations. Some of the common ghost dreams are as follows:

A Ghost Passing

You could dream of seeing a ghost passing in your dream.  This could be an indication of your fears. Ghosts often visit during periods when you are stressed and failing at something you desperately want to achieve.

The ghost dream could be a message for you to change your ways or methods and stop trying too hard to reach something that is clearly out of reach.

You might actually be knocking at a closed door and all your efforts might be leading you further to the path of destruction. Consider looking elsewhere or changing a few things in your life.

You Are A Ghost In The Dream

When you dream that you became a ghost in your life, this could be an indication that there is a situation or someone in your life that you want to escape.

Take stock of your life and look if there is something or anyone that makes you feel like you want to run.  It could be that smothering relationship, demanding job, family or the great expectations from your political or social circles.

If that is the case, then the best solution should be facing the situation and letting everyone know how overwhelmed you feel. Communicate to the relevant parties on how you wish things should be to relieve yourself of the stress.

You Touch A ghost And It Vanishes

When you dream that you are touching a ghost and it vanishes, this could be a sign that you are making a great effort in dealing with your repressed fears and painful memories.

However, it is also an indication that you are still not ready to confront your fears head-on. In such a case keep working on dealing with your fears.

Being Terrified By A Ghost

This might be an indication that you are under pressure to do something that is going against your moral code and it is scaring you.

You could perhaps seek advice from someone you trust or strongly resist the temptations even if the consequences of refusal to do this wrong thing are dire.

A Ghost Is Haunting You

This could be an indication that your past issues are affecting your current life.  It could be time to let go of the past and use the past mistakes as lessons to help you make better decisions and move on with your life.

Deal with everything from the past that is currently affecting you. If you have to travel to that place you lived in, in the past for you to get closure then, by all means, do it and move on with your life.

Ghost Chasing You

If you dream of ghosts chasing you to kill you, that could be an indication that you are now ready to face your worst fears.  You might be feeling tired of being held back and want to move on to better things awaiting you in the future.

Face your fears head on and deal with them even if it will cause disgruntlement from those around you. It is definitely time to put all your fears aside and think of yourself and the truth no matter how much it hurts.

A Ghost Of Someone Who Died

When you dream of the ghost of someone who died, that could be an indication that you are in danger. Be careful of strangers who want to work with you in any way. Take your time before making commitments to avoid making great mistakes.

This dream could also mean that you feel guilty about your dead friend or relative being dead or you might have had a strained relationship or an unresolved issue with them when they were alive.

A Ghost Of Someone Who Is Still Alive

This is a very unusual dream, but then there is nothing normal with ghost dreams or most dreams for that matter.

This could mean that this ghost of this family member or friend who is still alive is an indication of how they might be negatively looking upon you.  They could be going against you and might be planning malicious acts against you.

A Ghost Talking To You

Such a dream could be an indication of your fears about death or you dying. Note how the ghost is talking, is it frightening, or talking in a normal conversation? It could symbolize that your fears have stopped being a big deal in your life.

A Friendly Ghost

This could be an indication of your loneliness and need for a close friend. Your life might revolve around work or school and you don’t have any real friends.

Your friends could be only those ones on social media or simply non-existent. You need companionship but don’t have any social life.  The solution would be for you to get out more and try and make friends.

You Are Chasing A Ghost

If you are chasing a ghost in your dream, then this could be an indication that you have full control of your fears and the obstacles in your life. You might be in the best position to get rid of them and actually have the ability to do so.

Look at all the things that frighten you and think of ways that you can quickly remove them from your life now that you know you can and are no longer afraid.

How To Interpret Your Ghost Dream

You can interpret your own ghost dream by getting as much detail as you can about the dream.  The following steps might make it easier.

1 – Think about every element in the dream and ask yourself questions like, what is a ghost? Do you believe in ghosts?  When and where did you last hear of ghosts? It could just be a dream, but then vivid dreams like those often times happen for a very good reason.

2 – Think about how you felt about your dream experience. In your waking life, what gives you that feeling you experienced when you encountered the ghost in your dream. Be as honest as possible in your answers to yourself.

3 – If your ghost dream is recurring, you could ask yourself, which nights the ghost dream happens and if there is anything that has been different during the day that might have caused that dream. Note the things that happen on those days that the dream occurs and from there on you can tell why the dream keeps coming.

4 – Lastly, put the associations together. If ghosts make you think of Casper the friendly ghost and you get an excited feeling in your stomach then maybe you should be anticipating great things that would be happening.

If on the other hand ghosts make you think of the ghost bikers, knights, haunted house and other scary stuff try to establish a connection between your dream imagery and real life because it is always there and has to be the key to what the dream is telling you.

How To Prevent Ghost Dreams

Controlling what you dream is still a mystery to many and the few theories at play have worked in some cases and not in many others.

For many dreamers, ghost dreams are not really a major issue until they start waking them up frequently or keep recurring.

No one wants to have terrifying ghost dreams unless they are the kind of people that get an adrenaline rush from fear.

With majority not liking nightmares especially ghost dreams which could be the most terrifying, outlined below are some of the things you can do to prevent yourself from having ghost dreams.

  • Practice good sleep hygiene.

You cannot completely prevent ghost nightmares or other bad dreams from happening, but you can set the stage to ensure that you sleep more soundly and feel well-rested.

Good sleep hygiene means ensuring your habits before bed and your sleep environment is perfect for quality rest.

Your bedroom should be cool, dark and quiet. There shouldn’t be any light sources like TVs, alarm clocks or even nightlights that are too bright.

If you have to, you can use white noise machines or earplugs to help drown out any bothersome night noises like howling winds, night creatures, traffic and so on.

When it comes to sleep habits, ensure that you observe regular bedtime and wake time always as a great way of supporting your internal clock. Don’t take substances like caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine because they can hugely affect your sleep.

Avoid such substances before bedtime and have only light bedtime snacks without any spices or foods that could cause indigestion and discomfort.

  • Talk about it or write it out

If your ghost dreams are making you uneasy and you are afraid of even going to sleep, talk about your dreams with a therapist or with a trusted friend or in a support group. You could even write the dream out if it makes you afraid after waking up.

  • Deal with your daytime stressors

Poor sleep is often associated with high levels of stress. Therefore, if there are areas of your life that are contributing to stress or fear, it is better that you deal with them.

Do whatever it takes to combat your stress as long as it is a positive thing. It could be warm scented baths, relaxing music, yoga, reading, exercising and other techniques that will help you.

Try and find solutions to the problems that are causing you stress.  Seek counsel from someone you trust, it could be your religious leader, trusted friend, family member and so on.

As you deal with your daytime stressors avoid the common nightmare fodder like movies about ghosts, death or violence or watching unsettling news broadcasts.

  • Play good video games

The process of desensitization, fighting and winning that is often associated with video gaming has been known to carry over to the dream world.

Look for good video games with less violence and they will stimulate your mind and make you less stressed.

  • Get professional help

In some instances nightmares can become more than occasional disruptions and eventually lead to a great source of sleep anxiety.

Nightmare disorder is a medically recognized sleep problem because it disrupts sleep, causes bedtime anxiety and affects daytime behavior.

Be bold enough to seek help because there is nothing embarrassing about experiencing terrifying ghost dreams. Remember if they affect you so much they will have a negative impact on your waking life.

  • Treat any underlying disorders

You could be experiencing these ghost dreams because of an underlying condition like narcolepsy, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome or REM disorder.

When you get treatment for these conditions the nightmare frequency might reduce and you will have less terrifying dreams. Consult your doctor and agree on the treatment option that is ideal for you.

  • Consider Imagery Rehearsal Treatment

This is a form of cognitive therapy that is known to be very effective in helping reduce tarrying dreams. If your ghost dreams have reached levels that make you afraid and jumpy even in your waking life, this form of therapy might just be right for you.

With this form of therapy, a patient is encouraged to think of a different ending to their ghost dreams. They are especially encouraged to imagine a more pleasant or satisfying outcome before they drift off to sleep.

A good example, if your recurring dream involves this ghost chasing you then towering over you to finish you off and just when it is about to finish you, you wake up screaming and sweaty.

You could imagine an alternative ending of the dreamlike, the ghost chases you and when it reaches you it says, “come on buddy why are you afraid? let’s go have a drink at your favorite joint, my treat and from now on I am your guardian angel”

You could imagine many great alternative endings of the dream and with time the ghost dreams will turn into pleasant dreams and eventually disappear altogether, replaced by beautiful dreams.

During the therapy session when a patient is asked to imagine these alternative endings to the dream, they are usually asked to do this orally, write down or draw the alternative ending of the dream.

  • Think Pleasant Thoughts

When drifting off to sleep, consider thinking happy thoughts of things that you like. Imagine yourself as the world-class businessman making headlines, or you vacationing somewhere exotic, like the Maldives for example.

When you think pleasant thoughts about yourself, you will not only keep ghost dreams and other nightmares away, but you will begin working towards achieving your dreams of greatness.

  • A Gemstone For Protection

Gemstones have mystic properties and if you believe in their power it could work positively on you. An amethyst gemstone, for example, is known to have the mystic power to help you forget about unpleasant thoughts and focus on the positive. Wear one as a pendant both in your waking and when sleeping and the ghost dreams might just be less terrifying.

  • Remind Yourself That Dreams Are Not Real

The ghost dreams might seem real in your dreams and the fear you feel even in your waking life is real but just remember that the events in your dreams are not real and cannot happen in real life.

Calm yourself down, have a huge smile on your face as you get ready to enjoy yet again another beautiful day.

  • Think Of All The Great Things That Have Happened In Your Life

Look back at all the accomplishments that you have made in life. You have a beautiful family, you graduated with honors, are in a great career or running a successful business, living in a beautiful house which you remodeled yourself, the great friends in your life and the lovely city or countryside that you live in.

Think of all the wonderful experiences that you have had and forget about the stuff of your dreams. The more you think of these great things that have happened to you, the more your dreams will be more pleasant and the wonderful events might just happen again in a different way.

  • Find A Roommate If you Live Alone

Sometimes living alone could also contribute to you having ghost dreams. If you had a roommate and knew they were nearby, the feelings of loneliness would be less and you would sleep easy at night.

If you wake up screaming, at least there will be someone there to bring you warm milk or give you water and sit with you and talk.  If you are screaming in your sleep, at least there will be someone who will wake you up and tell you that it is just a dream.

This will work in your favor only if you find a roommate who is understanding and won’t freak out when you are having your ghost dreams.

  • Pray About It

If you are religious and even if you are not but believe in some kind of deity, you could pray in sincerity as you offer your supplication before your deity.

In this case, the request would be to help you have peaceful nights and keep unpleasant recurring ghost dreams at bay.

Prayer does change situations and taking time and saying a prayer before bedtime will help a lot in giving you those lovely dreams and good night’s rest.

When Is It An Actual Ghostly Visitation?

Actual vivid dreams of seeing a ghost coming to you with a message have often been narrated. Some of these dreams make sense while others are too absurd and are far from making any sense.

Many dreamers have experienced ghostly visitations in their dreams and in such cases, the visitation dream is not a creation of the subconscious.

A ghostly visitation will hardly occur when you are awake because it will no doubt freak you out, though some people have said they have experienced such visitations; paranormal investigations, however, usually reveal that such events were hoaxes of some sort to create a buzz and excitement.

  • Read more:  Visitation Dreams – Seeing A Deceased Loved One in Dream

A ghostly visitation usually occurs when you are in the dream state because that is the state that your mind cannot question the presence of a spirit especially if it is a person who has died.

Your mind in the dream state will simply accept their presence hence the feelings of real fear or joy that you experience in the dream.

Ghostly visitations are usually different from regular dreams and here are the signs that will let you know that it is a ghostly visitation.

  • It Feels “Real”

The ghostly visitation will be very vivid and feel real complete with all the real emotions. You will feel gratitude, assurance and joy or love in your heart after you wake up. Afterwards, you will still experience the dazed effect of the dream as common with true ghostly visitations.

  • You Will Not Forget The Dream

A true ghostly visitation is unforgettable which is very unlike the regular dreams. You will remember the ghost dream in full details, down to the nitty-gritty.

You might even remember a detail as small as the color of the nails of your ghost or the outfit you were wearing in the dream, and if there are any numbers, you will remember them as well. You will also likely to remember this dream years after it happens and probably for the rest of your life.

  • The Message Is Usually Clear

Ghostly visitations are usually for the purposes of delivering messages.  The spirit visiting you will clearly point out and convey their message. The dreamer, in this case, will fully understand the message and know what is expected of them.

Sometimes the ghost might speak out the words or the dreamer will just understand the message telepathically without any word exchange in the dream.

  • Short and To The Point

Ghostly visitations are usually not long and drawn out. They are usually very simple and straight to the point but at the same time incredibly powerful and real.

If someone tells you a long drawn-out ghostly visitation dream, then it wasn’t really a visitation but one of their regular dreams.  The message whether a warning or a reassurance is usually short and straight to the point.

  • You Don’t Have To Ask Whether It was

When you experience a ghostly visitation dream, you will straightaway know that it is what it is. If you dream it and then question whether or not it was a visitation, then it probably wasn’t.

You will firmly feel and know that it was a visitation just from how you will be feeling after waking up. Often times the feeling is usually of calmness and happiness unless the visitation was a warning which might make you feel a little disturbed.

  • It Is Not A Nightmare

A ghostly visitation, as much as it sounds scary isn’t supposed to be scary. It usually leaves a feeling of assurance, joy, love, and satisfaction in the knowledge received even if it is a warning.

It could be a ghost of someone you deeply cared about who died coming to assure you that they are at a better place or deliver a message of love.

If you wake up screaming, or afraid from the ghost dream experience even if it involved a loved one, then that is a nightmare pure and simple bred from the issues that you are dealing with in your waking life.

A dream about a ghost is a common occurrence but it gets to unhealthy levels when it recurs a lot and starts affecting your waking life. However, as seen above there is a lot you can do to prevent the dreams from occurring or cope with them.

If you feel you need an interpretation for the dream, then examine all the angles as you should, look at the ghost dream in detail and examine every aspect of your life to see if there is a connection.

If the message is negative always take time and don’t overreact and make major decisions. However, if it is positive embrace it and make the best of your unusual ghost dream.

Ghost Dream Examples

  • I was walking through the hallway of my home checking on the kids making sure they were all tucked in bed. I had just finished and was walking back to my room when sudden wind rushed past me. I started shivering and then saw a transparent ghost of my next door neighbor who died last year standing at the end of the hallway beckoning at me to come. I tried to run but the ghost came closer and all of a sudden the hallway was filled with ghosts that were moving towards me and surrounding me. I woke up screaming.
  • We had just finished practice in the field but I stayed longer to practice some more while my teammates went ahead to the locker room. I finished practicing and started walking towards the locker rooms then noticed the whole school was deserted and I was the only one. I went to the locker rooms quickly to change and noticed that it was getting dark. As I entered the room I could see ghosts of my friends and my gym teacher all standing and waiting for me. I just knew that they wanted to make me a ghost too and I screamed and screamed….and woke up.
  • I was seated on the park bench on a sunny day reading my book and enjoying the fresh air of the park when suddenly I saw this beautiful girl who was walking towards me. I dropped my book and started staring at her. The way her hair glowed in the sun and fluttered from the gentle breeze. Her eyes were a beautiful blue and her skin was white. I sat there waiting for her to reach me but she just kept coming and wasn’t reaching me, I stood up and started walking towards her, then I woke up.

How to get rid of nightmares

Racing heart, sweaty palms and being jolted awake with an acute sense of stress and fear — it sounds like a scary movie scene, but it's actually what often occurs when someone experiences a nightmare.

So what's the difference between a bad dream and a nightmare? It crosses the threshold into nightmare disorder when these nighttime episodes occur frequently and disrupt your daytime functioning, either due to lingering feelings of angst from what occurred in dreamland, or from lack of sleep due to awakenings or insomnia developed over a fear of falling asleep.

"After a bad dream, you realize it wasn't real and have a sort of positive reaction to that realization. Whereas with nightmares there's a residual reaction that usually involves negative feelings or emotions," says Christopher Winter, M.D ., sleep specialist and neurologist and host of Sleep Unplugged with Dr. Chris Winter .

What causes nightmares?

There are a few things that can hike the likelihood of experiencing nightmares or trigger one. "Stress and sleep deprivation are two common ones that tend to go hand-in-hand. If you're stressed you may be sleep-deprived, and if you're sleep-deprived, that can contribute to you feeling stressed out — and both of those can increase the chances of having a nightmare," explains Alicia Roth, Ph.D. , clinical health psychologist who specializes in behavioral sleep medicine at Cleveland Clinic.

Nightmares can be exhausting and may feel like a hopeless situation when peaceful sleep is always under threat — but there are steps you can take to help tame the dream beast. Try these tips to stop nightmares, so you can snooze sounder at night.

Get a full-body workup.

Sometimes there's an underlying condition that may be causing your nightmare issues, so uncovering and treating it may be the fix you need. "For instance, something like sleep apnea may be lowering the quality of your sleep (which is a nightmare trigger), but there are ways to treat that. And people who have mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and more tend to have a higher rate of nightmares than people without these conditions," Dr. Dasgupta adds.

Try positive imagery therapy.

It's a tactic that many sleep experts recommend for patients experiencing nightmare-related insomnia, and you can do it right from the comfort of your home before bed. "Insomnia in people with nightmares can be unique because it's the result of the nightmare, you dread going to sleep so it becomes an aversive experience versus a nice and comfy one that most people enjoy," Roth says. "I work with them on working out their positive imagination muscle."

One of the basic techniques is to walk yourself through an imaginary nature scene that brings you peace and comfort — perhaps the beach or a majestic mountainscape. Focus on the visuals, sounds you'd hear and even scents you'd smell if you were really there. "It's not always about getting rid of the bad stuff that appears in your nightmares, it's about adding in good, positive images for your brain to consume," adds Roth.

Rethink melatonin.

The much sought-after sleepytime hormone, melatonin, may help put you to sleep but end up causing nightmares, especially in people prone to them. Science tells us that melatonin can increase the amount of time we spend in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep stage , so sleep experts say it makes sense that the likelihood of experiencing nightmares would also go up. "REM sleep is almost like being awake, and that plays a role in why the dreams (or nightmares) that we have during that time are so much more vivid," explains Dr. Dasgupta.

Explore lucid dreaming.

It sounds trippy, but it's actually possible to be dreaming ... and realize that you're dreaming in the moment. "Some people can learn the technique of lucid dreaming , where you start to develop an awareness during the dream that may allow you to modify it," Dr. Winter says. "I taught myself how to do in just a couple of weeks, but a sleep specialist can also help you; this helps you exert dream control and gives you more of a sense of stability in terms of dreaming."

Find ways to wind down.

Since one of the biggest nightmare triggers is stress , finding ways to keep a handle on it during the day may help you out at night. “Nightmares sometimes result from us trying to solve problems in our sleep — this is the brain’s rehearsal system at work in the night, so too much daytime stress can lead to nightmares when you go to bed,” says Alex Dimitriu, M.D., founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine in California . Find activities that keep you calm and make them a regular part of your daily routine. Try things like meditation , yoga , walking or other exercise, a hot bath before bed or scheduling a few minutes of quiet “me time” where you wind down from the day. "You need some sort of buffer zone between your day and when it's time to sleep," Roth adds. "A wind down routine helps your body understand that it's nearing bedtime, just like when we were kids.

Have a bedtime snack.

If your blood sugar drops too low while you’re sleeping, that can cause a nightmare, says Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., an integrative medical expert . How can you tell if nighttime “hanger” is to blame for your bad dreams? One good clue is if you feel “hangry” during the day. Dig into a small bedtime snack that includes protein and carbs but is low in fat, sodium and sugar.

Stick to a sleep schedule.

Maintaining a regular sleep schedule seven days a week (yes, weekends, too!) is key to getting enough shuteye, and in turn, staving off nightmares. "Having a haphazard sleep schedule or traveling, two things that mess with your circadian rhythm, can cause nightmares to occur," says Dr. Winter. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day and aim to get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Finding a routine that works —putting away electronic devices 30 minutes before bed or reading a few chapters of your book — can help make drifting off to sleep easier.

Nix the nightcap.

Alcohol might make you sleepy, but it (and other substances like drugs) can actually lead to nightmares, says Dr. Dasgupta. Avoid sipping wine, beer, liquor and other spirits close to bedtime and instead rely on other tricks, like a soothing cup of hot tea or 10-minute meditation, to quiet your mind.

Examine your medicine cabinet.

Depression and anxiety can be a nightmare trigger, but so can some of the drugs often prescribed to treat those conditions, such as SSRI (selective serotonin response inhibitors)— in fact, SSRI may actually intensify dreams, says Michael Breus, Ph.D., clinical psychologist, diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, and Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine . Other drugs to treat blood pressure or help you sleep may also cause nighttime distress. Talk to your doctor about alternative medications or adjusting your dose to see if that helps.

And never stop taking a medication without consulting with your doctor first; the withdrawal your body's pushed into when certain meds aren't tapered properly may end up triggering nightmares, Dr. Dasgupta says.

Try rewriting your nightmares.

We can’t always remember our bad dreams, even if we emotionally or physically react to them — but if you can recall what you dreamt about, image-rehearsal therapy may help reduce nightmares the next time you sleep. The idea is to recast your nightmare into a happier, more peaceful script, says Dr. Dasgupta. For example, if you were running down a dark path as a threat got closer and closer, perhaps your new scenario features you walking down a quiet wooded path with your loyal dog trotting along behind you.

Schedule “worry time.”

By now you know that stress, anxiety, and depression can trigger nightmares. One trick that may help you keep a handle on them is to carve out time to feel and experience those negative thoughts and emotions — that way you don’t bring them with you into bed. “Journal or problem solve for 20-30 minutes hours before bedtime to get it all out ahead of time so it doesn’t happen at night,” says Dr. Dimitriu.

Avoid scary things.

This might seem obvious, but watching a frightening movie or reading a scary book can lead to nightmares, so consider taking a break or hitting pause to see if they stop. "This sounds silly but it's not! I've watched a scary movie and then definitely had a nightmare that night!" says Dr. Dasgupta.

Dreams about ghosts can be interpreted in many ways, depending on the individual’s beliefs and personal experiences. Some people believe that dreaming about a ghost is a sign of good luck, while others believe that it means something bad is going to happen.

Sometimes, seeing ghosts in dreams represent aspects of the self which are not currently being acknowledged or expressed in your waking life.

What Are Ghosts?

Ghosts are believed to be evil spirits of the dead that haunt the living. In literature and art, ghost imagery is commonly used as a metaphor for death or the undead.

Friendly ghost

When we see friendly ghosts in our dreams, it generally means that someone is trying to send us a message .

The message could be something as simple as a warning or it could be more significant.

  • If the friendly ghost is someone you know, then the message is likely coming from them.
  • If the friendly ghost is someone you don’t know, then the message is less clear.

But either way, the appearance of a friendly ghost in your dream is definitely a sign that something important is happening on a spiritual level .

9) A scary ghost in your dreams

  • What do scary ghosts in our dreams mean?
  • Are they trying to tell us something?
  • It’s a bad sign?

Let’s explore the spiritual meaning of a scary ghost in your dreams.

There are many theories about what dreams mean.

One interpretation is that our subconscious is trying to tell us something . So, what does a scary ghost in our dream mean?

Some believe that a scary ghost is a sign of unresolved issues from the past.

This could be something from your childhood or even a past life.

The ghost may represent repressed anger or fear .

Alternatively, it could be a warning about something dangerous in your current life.

Others believe that seeing a ghost in your dream is simply a reflection of your own fears and anxieties.

This could be related to current events or personal issues you’re struggling with .

10) Ghosts’ dreams may be symbols of the past

A message from the past

There are many theories about what ghosts represent in our dreams.

  • Some say that they are symbols of our past , haunting us with memories or unfinished business.
  • Others believe that they are our subconscious mind trying to send us a message .

Whatever the case may be, it is clear that ghosts’ dream symbolism is open to interpretation.

So if you find yourself being chased by a ghost in your dreams, ask yourself what it might mean.

  • Are you running from something in your past?
  • Or are you trying to ignore an important message from your subconscious mind?

Only you can decide what your ghost dreams mean.

But if you take the time to reflect on their symbolism, you may just find some answers to your deepest questions .

11) Ghosts are symbols of unresolved issues

When it comes to what our dreams mean, there are a lot of theories out there.

One popular theory is that ghosts are symbols of unresolved issues .

This theory suggests that when we see ghosts in our dreams, it may be a sign that there is something in our lives that needs to be addressed.

If you’re someone who tends to have nightmares or scary dreams involving ghosts, this theory may offer some relief.

It’s possible that the ghostly figures in your dreams are not actually ghosts at all, but rather symbols of something else entirely .

So, if you’re seeing ghosts in your dreams, take a step back and try to figure out what they might represent in your life.

It’s also important to keep in mind that not all dreams involving ghosts are going to be symbolic .

Sometimes we just see things in our dreams that don’t necessarily have any hidden meaning.

Are ghosts a bad spiritual sign?

Ghosts and bad luck

Many people believe that seeing a ghost is a bad omen . They think that it means that there is something wrong with the person’s spiritual state.

However, there are also many people who believe that ghosts are just lost souls who are looking for help.

There is no clear consensus on what ghosts actually are.

Some people think that they are evil spirits, while others believe that they are simply lost souls .

Should I do something to protect myself?

Spiritual protection

As a person who is sensitive to energy, you may be wondering if there are ways to protect yourself from ghosts . While there is no foolproof method, there are certain things you can do to minimize your chances of attracting or encountering a ghost.

First, it’s important to understand that ghosts are attracted to places with high emotional energy.

This could be a place where something traumatic happened, or simply a place where people spend a lot of time feeling strong emotions like anger or sadness.

If you’re trying to avoid ghosts, it’s best to stay away from these types of places.

Second, it’s helpful to create a space in your home that is peaceful and calming.

This will help to balance the energy in your home and make it less attractive to ghosts .

Final Words

In conclusion, when you dream about ghosts it can mean a number of things.

It could be a sign that you are feeling haunted by something in your past, or it could be a warning from your subconscious about someone in your life.

It could also be a metaphor for something else entirely .

If you’re worried about what your ghost dreams mean, talk to a therapist or dream interpreter to get some clarity.

Dreaming About Ghosts – Symbolism and Interpretation

Apsara Palit

Table of Contents

Are ghost dreams real, dreaming of the ghost of a loved one, dreaming of the ghost of a dog, dreaming of a ghost attacking you, dreaming of fighting with a ghost, dreaming of chasing a ghost, dreams as a means of communication for ghosts, wrapping up.

Dreaming about ghosts can be terrifying, especially when they seem so real. Even someone who doesn’t believe in them can find these dreams unsettling. Some people believe that dreams are a way for ghosts, or deceased souls, to make contact with the living , while others believe that dreaming of a ghost could mean that there’s something wrong with the dreamer’s mentality.

Although this isn’t the case, seeing a ghost in a dream could tell you a lot about your state of mind or something about your personality. Ghost dreams can be interpreted in many ways and the best way to do so is by focusing on the details and what happened in the dream into account.

Before we dive into a breakdown of your dream, let’s address whether dreams about ghosts are real. Some believe that when they dream about ghosts, also known as visitation dreams, they’re being contacted by paranormal beings. This is a view that has been held in many cultures since ancient times, where dreaming was viewed as a means of communication with the dead.

Patrick McNamara, Ph.D. and expert on the nature and function of dreaming, argues in Psychology Today that such dreams “might be one source of the widespread belief in life after death—a core idea for conceptions of the soul and religion. For traditional peoples who accorded equal or greater ontological weight to dreams as compared to waking reality, a visitation dream must have been utterly convincing evidence that a spirit world and life beyond the grave existed”.

Anne Reith , Ph.D. and founder and director of the Institute for Mediumship, Psychic, Astrological, & Reiki Training, states that it’s easy for ghosts and other such spiritual beings to communicate with humans when they are asleep. This is because our guards are down and we’re more receptive to such visitations in dreams than we would be in our waking life.

This view has also been explored in popular media – one of the best examples is the famous movie Sixth Sense , where the dead protagonist is able to communicate with his wife only when she’s sleeping.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, dreams about ghosts and other deceased persons can be interesting and tell you something about your subconscious mind.

A dream in which you see the ghost of a loved one doesn’t necessarily mean that the particular person will die or already has died. Instead, it may symbolize your unresolved feelings for that person in your waking life. Some believe that these dreams are a sign that the dreamer (and not the ghost in the dream) is in danger.

It’s also believed that the ghost in this dream could be trying to tell you something. For those who have lost a loved one without having had the chance to say goodbye, this dream could be a type of healing dream. The dreamer may feel relieved that they finally had the chance to say goodbye to the person they lost.

A Bad Memory

Seeing a ghost in your dream could symbolize a bad memory that you may be trying to shut out of your mind.

If you see the ghost in the mirror, it could mean that memories of bad experiences have left a mark on you.

Though you may have tried to forget these experiences and move on, your subconscious mind could be triggering these dreams to remind you of them.

Trauma and Stress

Ghost dreams can often symbolize trauma or stress you have had to endure lately. It’s perfectly common for such nightmares to occur as a result of posttraumatic stress and these dreams usually tend to go away on their own after some time.

However, if you continue to see such dreams, it could mean that the stress may be too much for you to handle and that it may help to talk to a professional about it or someone close to you.

Fear of Dying

Dreaming of ghost of dead person

At a certain point in life, it’s normal for anyone to have fears about dying. If you’ve been seeing ghosts in your dreams, it’s likely that you’re having the same fears.  The fear of death you feel does not have to be about yourself. It could be about anyone in your waking life: a family member, a friend, a relative, a colleague, or even your boss.

Dreaming about the ghost of a dog could mean that you’re having problems with someone you’re close to and you’re feeling guilty about it.

This feeling may be bothering you, eventually manifesting in your dreams in the form of a ghost dog. Perhaps you feel guilty about having these problems and you want to resolve them with your friend, but neither of you wants to take the first step.

In this case, this dream could be telling you that it’s time to put the past behind you and work on burying the hatchet. As a result, you may feel relief and even joy.

Dreaming of a ghost is bad enough, but it’s a lot worse if the ghost is attacking you. If this happens in your dream, it could represent your vulnerability or that someone is threatening you and waiting for you to surrender to them.

This dream could also be a sign of defeat and surrender to pressure and negative forces. It could be warning you to keep your guard up and working on being more assertive.

Fighting with a ghost in a dream has a negative interpretation.  It could mean that you have too many negative emotions building up inside of you and your energy is being drained as a result. You may also have lost or be losing your will to fight through the problems in your life.

This dream could be giving you a hint not to allow yourself to be overpowered. It’s also a sign that you might want to free your mind by releasing any pent-up emotions as soon as possible.

Dreaming about chasing a ghost can say a lot about your personality. It’s an indication that you are in control of every aspect of your life, both good and bad. You likely have the strength and the ability to face your issues and concerns, which you will eventually conquer using your own power.

On the other hand, this dream could also mean that there’s something you need to fix in your waking life. It may be telling you to identify what’s not right in your life so that you can work on fixing it.

As mentioned earlier, dreams are often said to be a means of communication for ‘ghosts’ or spirits.

In some cultures, it’s a popular belief that dreams are caused by ghosts who haven’t passed on and wish to communicate with the living. Some regard ghosts as a source of talent and wisdom, and that seeing one in a dream is lucky.

While dreams about ghosts may be frightening, especially if you’re someone who’s terrified of ghosts, they don’t always have negative interpretations. In fact, some dreams may help you to sort out certain issues in your life while others could point out something about yourself that you need to change.

I dreamed about beating up a ghost after it came forward me what does it mean,?

I have been having dreams about the same 2 terrifying haunted houses for about two years now. They happen a couple of times a week and I always wake up EXACTLY one hour from the time I went to sleep. I’m in search of someone who can draw sketches for me and could help me put these dreams on paper. If someone could point me in the correct direction, I would appreciate it!

I had a dream last night. I am with my friend walking on the corridor or hallways, then suddenly of walking I saw a ghost wearing white dress upnto her feet but I didn’t saw her face, then after a seconds he disapper, and a seconds again he camback that makes us scream and scared, My friend almost run and I left behind of the hallway abd the ghost run to me and then he locked me with her arms. I scared and the only thinf that I do is to say this words “in the name of jesus” and I suddenly wake up but my eyes yet closed and I even can’t move my body, and I don’t why coz I really scared. After that I pray a lot and repeatedly pray and pray And everytime that I discuss this story to mybfriends and family I always afraid really so scared and almost terrified even I wrote this story and when I in that point that I pertain to him, oh my ghaad I feel so terrified afain. shit. I don’t want this feeling!

My dream was last night. At first, the dream was in a gloomy setting. There was an apartment in a, what looks like an abandoned building. There was a girl living in the apartment and there was also a ghost. The Ghost turned out to be her lover since I also keep seeing that ghost’s past and he was like guarding the girl, and the girl was always sad or unfortunate. The ghost always sleeps next to the girl, observes her, at the same there were also glimpse from his past life. At the same time, it felt like a dream inside a dream since I am writing it down in my dream since I am a writer and I am aware that the ghost part is a dream so I keep waking up-still in my dream- and writing it down. I am just frustrated since I want to know what happened next since I did not finish the dream. It stopped when the ghost made the girl see him and he told her that they were lovers.

I had a dream last night that I was killed by a vampire someone I’ve never seen before and he was the only one who could see me and hear me. He started hanging out with me all the time. He moved in and we went out on the town and partied all the time, but it was depressing because everyone out in public couldn’t see or hear me. I was yelling at the top of my lungs and people just kept walking by. My family could see me because they didn’t know I was dead and slowly my family stopped recognizing me. I was so sad at this realization. In the dream I was so sad and depressed about this. It was so strange.

I had a dream last night and in my dream I was sleeping except by my front door was a ghost of me same clothes and everything then when I turned the lights on she was coming after me and disappeared

I had a dream last night of a school that I was in and I went into a room there were a few ghosts but I was friends with them I felt comfortable and relaxed I wasn’t scared at all it felt really weird it felt as though they were my friends I don know what that means

It was last night when i had a dream about different scenarios where ghosts would chase me down and if they caught me they would turn into humans/zombies, and they would torture and kill me. The only one I specifically remember was I was in a horse stall with my friend, and she was trying to get the horse out of the stall thing. So when she left, I started to panic because I knew that the presence of something was still in the room. I then heard a low rumble noise, I turn around and a motorcycle had been started and the headlights were on me. I tried getting out of the stall but it was locked, so it took me some time to unlock it before i got out. I started running and screaming my friends name, but she was nowhere to be found. I ended up out running the ghosts. It was the most bizarre thing and I woke up in a panicked state, and sweating.

I have this weird dream of seeing ghost and dead nuns inside the church. Dead people walking everywhere inside it, I’ve got this dream many time and every time I wake up from it I won’t be able to until and unless I get to see the end of the dream. It always ends up with me running from the place trying to find the way out. It’s like an open filed with fences around it, I cross the fence and never look back again. As soon as the dream comes I really don’t know what happen, but my body automatically recognize the dream and tries to warn me and yet before I open my eyes the dream already starts and I don’t get to open my eyes until I finish the dream . I’ve been getting this dream for a long time. But not on regular basis. The dream always gives me chills. But the most interesting thing is I’m not even a Christian and I’ve never been to any church.

In my dream there was a mysterious force that grabbed me from behind tossing me towards the sky which became a ceiling. There was a young girl and her father nearby that saw this and watched in horror. Incouls not scream or speak. I jolted awake and gasped for air and at that moment felt something releasing me from behind. It was squeezing me so tight. It was not sleep paralysis it was a dream that folllowed me to awake. It was the first nightmare I had in 30 years that scared me because I knew it wasnt real but could not control it. Infeel like there was an evil presence in my room that night. At 37 years old I wanted to go sleep with my mom. I’ve never been that scared in my life.

Were do i begin last night i dreamth of my husband in fetal position yelling from our bed. No!no ! ghost!!! And i stood by him and looked it was a ghost short ghost floating towards me very fast and as i kneeled down felt it go thru me i jolted and woke up. Its not the first time ive felt an encounter like that when i was little in my childhood home i had dreamed that a lady was after me she was wearing same white dress as the ghost from last night and i was running from her she caught up and bam!! Pushed me i felt my body jerked and i woke up my back was sore and i was nervously afraid ……

I had a dream that I was in a big store, similar to Home Depot, with my cousin roaming around and my family was up front. I had this feeling this place was bad news and I wanted to leave. But then I forgot all about it and started running around and playing. Something happened and we began to RUN. We got into the candles section and everything was going off. I was so scared…but i paused for a moment and asked it, blink once if you can hear me. It blinked. I asked it again and again. It could hear me. We started running again and we got to our parents and seemed like everything was fine. We got home and we needed to go back for something. Paint I guess? We got there and we got in the line and there was this woman with her baby buying something. I told her that she needed to get out quick cause this place was haunted. She was scared and left. Then we got home and needed to go again….. We got back there and was at the back of the isle beside this young man in a wheelchair sleeping. Some”thing” dragged his arm and pulled out an object. It said….. “Distracting can occur.” What does this mean? Why am I so young and having this dream? Am I unwanted? It seemed all so vivid! Why am I having this dream?

I had a dream of two ghost peering over a bench, like churches have, just looking at me. I felt like I was strapped down but conscious and awake at the same time. I was watching them watching me and I was yelling that I see you I said several times and finally I was able to get up from my sleep Felt real

playing with a ghost in a dream that ive seen before in real life

We moved into a new house and there was there was This ghost girl I think she first lowkey hunted me but then we ended up being best friends she was nice to me but she killed everyone on the party and forced me to take someone’s face off…

I had this strange dream where I seen loads of ghosts they were all happy smiling at me they were happy for a reason but I forgot the reason and they were all happy then they all drifted away

I dreamt about the spirit of a little girl that kept appearing in this house. She was sweet but kept appearing and I couldn’t figure out why. She was dressed in a school uniform. I don’t know who she was or why she kept appearing. What could this mean?

I was dream a dark shadow of girl She want go inside my body but I scream because I don’t want her to enter my body, I see she’s bring a bad curse she want use my body for some reason that I don’t want to be happen. Help me how to explain this situation, I’m so scared when I was waking up.

I dream that we have brought a new house. I’m upstairs in one of the bedrooms when the corner of the duvet lifts, I see the duvet rustle through and lift the other side as whatever it is has exited the bed. Then the bedroom door shuts! I run to the door and can open it but then as I run downstairs it’s my old house and I go to the bathroom where my partner and daughter are just standing there and I wake up.

Last night I had a dream that I was walking through the kitchen and all the lights were off and I started to walk and there was an older lady in-front of me walking away I was trying to get her attention and I couldn’t talk so I walked to the living room and as I’m waking my body started to go numb and bassically I just layed in the floor trying to tell everyone that was in the room that I saw a ghost and this is why I’m feeling that way I couldn’t talk at all and I just felt so numb like a thousand pointy needles poking me ! I don’t know what that means or what could possibly happen next time I go to sleep any advice ?

I HAVE A BAD DREAM ABOUT GHOSTS KEEP HUNTING ME IN MY SLEEP

Last night I dreamt that I was back in my childhood home and was sleeping with my 3 year old son. A ghost grabbed me from bed and pulled me across the room and I scrambled to get back to my son. My only thought was that I had to protect him. Again another ghost tried to grab him from me and I pulled him back and then a third ghost floated above and tried to grab both of us and I snatched my son away and pushed the ghost. As I ran away from the bed holding him the ghost turned into my husband who seemed to be confused by what was happening. I ran crying into the arms of my godmother who told me I needed to go back and face it. What does this mean?

My aunt just told me that she had a nightmare of my house being haunted. It was small things like lights flickering and the fridge opening and the pantry door opening and closing. She said that when she ran outside to leave her car had been torn up and made so that she couldn’t drice away. We just moved into the house six months ago and she comes and visits us quite a bit. There was only one family to live here before us and the mom died in a hospital a few years before they put the house up for sale. We’ve heard a very small amount of noises that couldn’t be explained and a few weeks ago I heard my name being called when I was downstairs by my self. I feel like me wanting the house to be haunted is causing me to see ghosts where there aren’t. I really hope I didn’t conjure something with my crazy thoughts 😂

My dream was very real it seemed. I was arguing with the spirit or ghost about it being mischievous. I was standing near our bedroom door when I noticed that hooks were being raised by an invisible finger. I chastised the ghost and it began moving around the room unseen but the presence could be felt. Eventually it disappeared but I had the feeling I was being watched and dreaded the ghost showing back up.

I had a dream that a ghost raised me high into the air and then dropped me. I was falling fast, but slowed at the last second, and gently touched back down on the ground. Then the ghost lifted me slowly, just a few inches off the ground, and pulled me backward. I could see that the entity was an orb of greenish-yellow light. I stopped moving and another ghost/entity came into the room. This one was like a black shadow and a hand reached out toward me; then the shadow-like ghost receded back into the darkness. I started to chase after it but I woke up. This was the strangest and scariest dream I’ve had in a long time!

I saw I was in my garden night time making some video for a tik tok from front camera and suddenly when light’s reach my face I saw a very bad face in my phone I thought it was a ghost and I ran away

The ghost would constantly be in my room making a lot of noise able for me to hear it. Which would wake me out my sleep in the dream and it would also catch my attention in which i would run to my parents and scream for help. As its seems the ghost just wants to set fear in my heart waking me up in the middle of the night?

Chairs sliding across the room, but in the dream my mother doesn’t seem to care

My dream was short but I just looked at the mirror from my bed and my lights were on and she just walked in the mirror or something and looked at me. That’s when I woke Up

i had a dream that i was laying down and a ghost just went up to me and i took a big gasp of air then i woke up in the middle of the night

When I dream of ghosts, it is generally uncomfortable. I am usually in a house, which in my dream, I am trying to inhabit. The ghost does not want me there. I don’t think I have ever recognized the ghosts in my dreams. I just know that they are not warm or hospitable. They strike terror in my heart. They make me aware that I am unwelcome.

I have the exact same dream. For over a year I have been having this dream. Is it the ghost of an old lady?

Last night I just had two dreams of ghosts, the first one was of my brothers I just saw but they were more invisible than actual ghosts. And the second is more disturbing, I was a different house and there was this guy I swear I have never seen in my life and he kept trying to calmly tell me he was murdered and I was calmly accepting it but was slightly freaking out, and I had more control in this dream than I’ve ever had.

I had a dream that I was the ghost terrorizing the family. I cant find one dream interpretation about it.

I just had that exact same dream tonight and it was pretty freaky

There may hardly be any person on the Earth who doesn't dream. Dreaming is a natural occurrence and is something that is entirely out of a person's control. What he or she sees in a dream may or may not have any direct connection to real life. Nonetheless, they do have a meaning, and there is a purpose of dreams, feel dream interpreters. Dreaming about ghosts is very common, and hence today, we shall tell you what it means when you see yourself being attacked by them.

To understand the meaning, let us first know what dreaming about a ghost means. When you are emotionally vulnerable, you tend to react to comments or criticism a little too quickly without sparing time for self-introspection. Moreover, you could be so overpowered by people or circumstances that you feel threatened. And hence, when you dream about being attacked by a ghost, it means that you feel defeated by the elements or people who do not want you to flourish.

If you are someone who gets spooked thinking about a ghost, then you may not venture out alone or in the darkness. You may feel eerie for no reason and may continuously think of the presence of the supernatural around you. Such vulnerability stems from the fear that a person nurtures within him or her. And this fear may or may not be baseless. And to overcome this situation, a person must be willing to admit that something somewhere is amiss and that there is a need to correct it.  Make yourself strong enough to deal with negative emotions head-on. Moreover, don't let your emotions or anyone else take control of your mind. Hence, there is no need to worry when you dream about a ghost attacking you. Analyse your situation and introspect and take corrective measures to excel in life. Succumbing to pressure or negativity should never be a resort.

City officials say relief is on the way for Norwalk residents dealing with foul-smelling, bad-tasting tap water

NORWALK, Ohio (WOIO) - Residents of Norwalk have been dealing with foul-smelling and bad-tasting tap water for at least six months.

The city says the problem is due to high levels of a non-toxic compound called methylisoborneol (MIB) in the water supply.

MIB is caused by algae overgrowth in the city’s reservoirs.

While the city and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) say the water is safe to drink, many residents are frustrated and say they don’t want to drink it.

“It’s like showering to smell like a wet dog,” said Norwalk resident Ryan Brotherton. “I grew up drinking out of the water hose and it tastes better than this.”

The city has been working to fix the problem by treating the reservoirs with copper sulfate and increasing the amount of active carbon in the water treatment plant.

Recent testing shows that MIB levels in the tap water have dropped significantly, but some residents say they can still smell and taste the compound.

The city has also purchased nine new ultrasonic units that will help to keep algae down below the surface of the water. T

he units were ordered after 19 News investigated the issue in December.

Public Works Director Aaron Osbourne says he expects the water to be back to normal within the next two weeks.

“The water will soon be MIB-free,” Osbourne said. “We’ve learned some lessons that we hope will stop this from happening again in the future.”

19 News will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
