Hollywood's most haunted: Unexplained mysteries, creepy places and paranormal hot spots around SoCal

LOS ANGELES — Halloween is just days away, and while there are plenty of  ghostly, ghoulish attractions for those of us looking for a good family-friendly fright, SoCal is also home to more than its share of chilling ghost stories, unsolved mysteries and terrifying allegedly true haunts.

Writer, comedian and podcaster Rebecca Leib gave us the inside scoop on some of the most notorious Hollywood haunt spots.

Read on... if you dare!

Even without allegations of the supernatural, the Cecil Hotel in DTLA has a rap sheet that could send chills down your spine. Opened as a luxury hotel in 1924, over the decades, the Cecil deteriorated into a flophouse and eventually became home to not one but two serial killers, Richard “The Night Stalker” Ramirez and Jack Unterweger.

In the late ‘00s, the Cecil was given a hip makeover and rebranded as “Stay on Main,” in an effort to attract younger guests. One such guest, Canadian student Elisa Lam, was found dead in the hotel’s rooftop water tank, weeks after she’d disappeared while staying at the hotel. A spooky security cam video of her in the hotel elevator shortly before she disappeared continues to invite speculation.

"I have a friend who swears she saw Elisa Lam at Amoeba days before she died," said Leib, who co-hosts The Ghost Town Podcast with Jason Horton. "Very eerie young woman, obviously ill. The whole Cecil Hotel has a bad reputation and bad vibe to it."

Griffith Park has long been home to a host of alleged haunts . The roots of the park’s supernatural phenomenon are believed to stem from a 150-year-old curse wrought on the land the park occupies in 1863 by Dona Petronilla when she learned her uncle would not be bequeathing it to her.

Paranormal phenomena reported in the park over the decades include horseback sightings of Petronilla and the park’s namesake, Griffith J. Griffith, a  haunted picnic table  and even an infrequently sighted  werewolf-like beast .

But for Leib, it's the Old Zoo on the Glendale side of the park that's the most terrifying.

"Griffith Park founder Col. Griffith Jenkins Griffith was truly insane. He shot his wife in the eye and had a fall from grace that was pretty sensational," said Leib. "He's supposed to haunt the place, but the zoo is legit terrifying and has more sightings than the rest of the park combined. Many unidentified heads (and) body parts have been found there through the years, which probably contributes to its lore."

Peg Entwistle  may have never achieved her dreams of movie stardom, but the British-born actress with a Broadway background lives on immortally as “ The Hollywood Sign Girl .” After the 24-year-old starlet's contract with RKO Pictures was canceled, the story has it that on the night of Sept. 18, 1932, she hiked from her uncle’s house on Beachwood Dr. to the Hollywood Sign, where she climbed 50 feet to the top of the “H” and apparently leaped to her death.

Reported sightings of Entwistle’s ghost began soon after when the “H” she dove from toppled over without explanation. More recently, hikers and park rangers have reported seeing a disoriented-looking blonde woman in 1930s attire accompanied by the smell of gardenia, rumored to be the scent of Entwistle’s favorite perfume.

For Leib, the Entwistle story is just one element of what makes the sign creepy.

"You probably know the story of Peg Entwistle, but like Griffith Park,  lots of weird body parts turn up around the Hollywood Sign ," she said. "People report being followed down the path when returning from a hike there."

Pasadena’s Colorado Street Bridge was the highest concrete bridge in the world when it was completed in 1913. Not long afterward, it began to acquire a sinister reputation as “Suicide Bridge.”

"The suicide bridge lives up to its name! A bunch of people died on it and lots of sensitives report having the urge to drive off of it randomly," Leib said. "It just looks creepy, especially in the early morning hours, with the lights lit."

The first known suicide at the bridge occurred in 1919, and estimations put the number of people who’ve ended their lives by leaping from the grandly arched Beaux-Arts construction at over 100. Even the website of the  National Park Service  states that “a number of spirits are said to wander the bridge as well as the Arroyo below.”

A former ocean liner and WWII troopship,  the Queen Mary has been moored in Long Beach since it was decommissioned in 1967. Although currently closed, it has long been a tourist attraction and historic hotel. Willfully embracing its reputation as the “most haunted hotel in America," it even made Time magazine’s “ 10 Most Haunted Places .”

According to Leib, it lives up to the hype.

"For being so high profile, it's still gotta be the most haunted spot in Southern California," she said. "My aunt was staying there at a wedding and saw two old people sitting on her bed. A former colleague filmed a special there and some of the crew quit because it was so scary."

Ghosts sighted aboard the ship include a lady in white, a sailor who died in the ship’s engine room and children who drowned in the ship’s pool.

Located in the historic El Puebla de Los Angeles, Pico House was LA’s first major hotel when it was built in 1870. Now a historic landmark, workers and visitors to Pico House have reported phenomena ranging from mysterious shadows and the sounds of footsteps to, in Leib's experience, unexplained electrical interference with technology.

"The Pico House is right by my house, and I worked on a TV show that filmed right outside of it. Lots of crazy electrical stuff happened on that set that we couldn't explain, and it's one of those places that is super public and historic but doesn't often get the haunted cred it deserves," she said.

It’s not clear who the alleged ghosts haunting the site are. Some say it’s Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of California for whom the original hotel was named. Others attribute the hauntings to the Chinese Massacre of 1871 .

"Go hang out outside at night, you might see something through its lower or upper floor windows," offers Leib.

Steeped in Hollywood glamour, it’s perhaps fitting that the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is allegedly home to a number of celebrity hauntings. Leib describes it as "a kind of high-voltage Hollywood haunted area."

Marilyn Monroe is rumored to haunt her old room, according to a maintenance worker who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter . The haunted visages of Montgomery Clift and Carole Lombard are also said to dwell in the elegant hotel, which opened in 1927 and played host to the first Oscars.

"The pool, the elevators and the room that housed the first Oscars are super active," said Leib. "When we went, the medium we went with said the graves of those at Hollywood Forever have a similar energy to the Roosevelt. Lots of deaths on the second floor, gunplay was also mentioned."

The last resting place of several noted celebrities, ranging from silent screen star Rudolph Valentino to punk guitarist Johnny Ramone, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery is said to be home to a number of spooks.

"My grandfather and great grandparents are buried here, and I gave a tour of the place for our live show," explained Leib. "The problem is that historically, all of the owners were absolutely horrible people — swindlers and crooks — and sold off parts of the land to Paramount and the strip mall across the street. So there are probably some bodies over at both of those places."

One commonly sighted ghost at the cemetery is a woman who is seen crying at a lake on the property.

It’s rare for a Spanish Colonial-style home on a quiet, leafy street in the Hollywood Hills to sit vacant for decades — unless perhaps that home was the site for a notorious unexplained murder-suicide. Such is the case with the infamous  Los Feliz Murder House , where in 1959, a successful doctor murdered his wife and attacked his daughter before taking his own life.

Although the home has changed hands many times in the ensuing decades, it has largely remained unoccupied.

"I went to this house on Halloween and when I approached the front gate, where a cement block was holding the gate closed — as if something was trying to be kept in, and not let out. It was a terrifying experience, and I didn't stay long," Leib said.

An Edwardian estate built in Laurel Canyon in the early 1900s, the biggest mystery around the Houdini House centers around whether the magician ever actually lived there. The house was owned by Houdini's friend, department store owner Ralph M. Walker and is equipped with a deep water tank Houdini reportedly used to practice his escapes. It's also connected to a mysterious network of tunnels and caves.

"I hosted an event there for Atlas Obscura and immediately did not want to be there," recalled Leib. "As kids, both my dad and grandfather used to try and break into the mansion and couldn't quite get in, but it was funny how when I got in I just wanted to get the 'eff out. Not fun. Very pretty place though!"

12 Real Life Ghosts Caught In Movies: Creepiest Things To Watch Tonight

Halloween Masks

  • Even as you get goosebumps and lose sleep, good horror movies tantalize and keep you on edge
  • Horror movies are ideally filmed in a controlled environment following a script, but this is not the case for some films
  • Some films have experienced cursed sets and objects, ghosts caught on tape and so much more

There is something satisfying about watching a realistic horror story. Even as you get goosebumps and lose sleep, good horror movies tantalize and keep you on edge. But what really makes them a good watch is the knowledge that you're watching a collection of scenes all filmed in a controlled environment following a script – except, in some films, this is not the case.

From cursed film sets to haunted objects, from ghosts caught on tape to paranormal investigations, here are some movies that experienced creepy occurrences while filming:

1. "Three Men and a Baby" (1987)

Some images of ghosts caught on film may be questionable in their shapelessness, but such is not the case in one of the movie's most iconic scenes. Here, the film captured the ghost of a boy who supposedly killed himself in the house where the movie was filmed. Over the years, some of the cast have talked about the existence of the ghost , but there has been no definitive conclusion on whether it was a cardboard cutout or a real ghost captured on film.

2. "The Amityville Horror" (1979 & 2005)

The ghostly events surrounding the Amityville haunting resulted in two screen adaptations – both reported creepy occurrences on set. In the 1979 version, James Brolin's pants allegedly fell off a hanger while he was reading a scary part of the script, which made him accept the part.

In the 2005 remake, actor Ryan Reynolds, along with other crew members, reportedly woke up at the time of the DeFeo murders, 3:15 am. Even eerier, a body washed up on shore next to their filming location.

3. "Rosemary's Baby" (1968)

Multiple creepy occurrences happened on the set of this iconic horror movie, which added to its enduring popularity. Producer William Castle received hate mail constantly. He ended up being hospitalized for kidney stones, during which he hallucinated some scenes from the movie. Though he recovered, he was convinced the cast and crew were cursed .

The movie's composer Krzysztof Komeda did not wake up from a coma after a fall accident – similar to how one character dies in the film. The entire cast got food poisoning, and another producer had a stroke. Director Roman Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, who used to linger on set after wanting to play the lead role, was brutally murdered, along with her unborn child, by the Manson Family. This happened while the movie was in theaters.

4. "Twilight Zone: The Movie" (1983)

One of the creepy stories told about this film was that actor Vic Morrow, who got killed while filming a helicopter scene, allegedly told his friends and family that he had been having dreams of something bad happening to him on a movie set. Apparently, he took this dream seriously, so he secured a life insurance policy before "Twilight Zone" started filming.

5. "The Crow" (1994)

This movie has a sinister plot, but even more sinister is the fact that Brandon Lee, the main character in the movie, died while filming due to a prop gun accidentally firing a real bullet. As if that was not tragic enough, this death was seemingly foreshadowed by his actor father, Bruce Lee, acting out a similar scene where he listens to a prop master explaining prop guns and Bruce Lee's character pretending to be dead on the set.

6. "The Innkeepers" (2011)

This movie about two hotel employees who decide to investigate haunted stories only to begin finding real evidence of ghosts is mirrored by the production of the film itself. The cast stayed at a real haunted location in Connecticut, and while filming, supernatural things seemed to happen on set. Some have reported having odd dreams, while there have also been instances of lights flickering and doors slamming.

7. "The Possession" (2012)

Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan shared some creepy stories about the movie set of this 2012 horror film. He said there were exploding lights and cold breezes on deserted corridors, and more popularly there had been a fire in a storage facility. The cause of the fire remains a mystery since, according to the investigation of the incident, it was not due to electrical faults or arson.

8. "The Exorcist" (1973)

Creepy and tragic events also surrounded the film set of this 1973 movie, resulting in many believing the movie had been cursed and prompting the director to request the presence of a priest to bless the filming location. At least three lives were lost on set, including Irish actor Jack Macgowran, a crew member and a security guard. The set itself burned down after a pigeon flew into a circuit box . Eerily enough, the only set that survived was the room of Regan MacNeil, the same room where many of the film scares happened.

9. "Poltergeist" Films (1982, 1986 & 1988)

"The Poltergeist" films are believed to have one of the most famous movie curses to exist. After the release of the movie, actor Dominque Dunne was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. Another actress, Heather O'Rourke, also died during surgery while the third installment was filming. The producer had to invite a priest to the set of the second movie to conduct a blessing.

10. "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose" (2005)

This 2005 film is a classic watch for its horrifying scenes, but even behind the camera, there were reports of supernatural experiences. Actress Jennifer Carpenter, along with some of the crew, allegedly experienced their hotel room radios turning on and off randomly. As they did, they would always play the same song, "Alive" by Pearl Jam.

11. "Insidious" (2010)

Director James Wan has experienced quite a few scary sets while filming his movies – so much so that he makes sure film sets are blessed . In this 2010 film, the cast and crew allegedly felt sick and uneasy as they filmed certain scenes. There would also be reports of noises and buzzes from unoccupied areas of the set.

12. "The Conjuring" Universe (2013-2022)

Some of the creepiest stories happened while filming some of the creepiest films. This is particularly true for "The Conjuring" universe, which follows the paranormal investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren. In the 2013 film that started the series of movies, the Warrens investigated the Perron family, who moved into a haunted house in the 1970s. The family actually visited the set and experienced strange phenomena happen. In one instance, wind began swirling around the Perron family.

One popular subject of "The Conjuring" movies is the cursed doll named Annabelle, which has gotten her spinoff movies. The real cursed Annabelle doll was a normal-looking Raggedy Ann Doll, made more creepy in the Hollywood portrayal. The haunted doll was investigated by the Warrens and eventually moved to the Warrens' Occult Museum.

While filming "Annabelle Comes Home" in 2019, actors McKenna Grace and Madison Iseman mentioned hearing three knocks during filming. Members of the cast and crew also noted the piano bench in the artifact room moved places overnight. Grace also experienced frequent power outages in her trailer, and she allegedly saw a shadowy figure sleeping in one of the rooms on set.

15 Seriously Scary Ghost Movies (And How To Watch Them)

Ghoul from Grave Encounters

Whether or not you believe in ghosts, few would deny that the mere idea of being in a haunted house is unsettling. For that reason, there are many great horror movies based on the premise of sharing a home or any isolated area with a deceased individual’s spectral remains, yet some are more frightening than others. If you are looking for a truly terrifying supernatural movie night, these scary ghost movies should do the trick.

The Shining (1980)

While trying to finish a novel, a recovering alcoholic author ( Jack Nicholson ), his wife (Shelley Duvall) and young son (Danny Lloyd) become caretakers of a desolate Colorado hotel where a sinister presence threatens to tear them apart.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: While the author himself was not a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of his 1977 novel , The Shining is considered to be among the best Stephen King movies — if not the best — for its unrelentingly eerie atmosphere and aimlessly unique depiction of hauntings.

Stream The Shining on Max . Rent or buy The Shining on Amazon .

The Changeling (1980)

A recently widowed music professor (Academy Award winner George C. Scott) becomes wrapped up in a disturbing mystery about his new home — a long-vacant mansion in Seattle — with guidance from the ghost haunting it.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: One of Martin Scorsese’s favorite horror movies is The Changeling , which is acclaimed as one of the best horror movies that address grief in a profound way in addition to its top-notch scares.

Stream The Changeling on Tubi . Stream The Changeling on Peacock . Stream The Changeling on Plex . Rent or buy The Changeling on Amazon .

Poltergeist (1982)

A real estate agent (Craig T. Nelson) and his wife (JoBeth Williams) tries to rescue their youngest daughter (Heather O’Rourke) from the evil spirits that have invaded their home and abducted her into their realm.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: Hailing from producer Steven Spielberg and director Tobe Hooper, Poltergeist is an essential haunted house movie — not just for its indelibly frightening elements, but also for its emotionally grounded depiction of parents longing to find their missing child.

Stream Poltergeist on Max . Rent or buy Poltergeist on Amazon .

The Sixth Sense (1999)

A child psychologist ( Bruce Willis ) with his own dark past tries to help a young boy (Haley Joel Osment) come to terms with his disturbing gift.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: Arguably M. Night Shyamalan’s best movie , the clever and frightening classic The Sixth Sense has a unique set of rules about the afterlife which, once you see the killer twist ending , you’ll never think of the same way again.

Rent or buy The Sixth Sense on Amazon .

Stir Of Echoes (1999)

After agreeing to be hypnotized by his sister-in-law at a party just for a laugh, it quickly proves to be no laughing matter for the man ( Kevin Bacon ) as he begins to see visions of a girl who is dead.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: Because it was released not long after The Sixth Sense and bore similar themes of ESP and paranormal activity , writer and director David Koepp ’s intense adaptation of Richard Matheson’s novel Stir of Echoes did not get the attention it deserved, and rarely has since then.

Stream Stir Of Echoes on Tubi . Stream Stir Of Echoes on Plex . Stream Stir Of Echoes on Freevee through Amazon .

Session 9 (2001)

Relations between the somewhat normally close-knit crew of an asbestos removal company grow sour as they race to complete a job at an abandoned mental hospital with a dark past that slowly comes to light.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: From director Brad Anderson — who also co-writes with star Stephen Gevedon — and also starring CSI : Miami star David Caruso, Session 9 is yet another unfairly overlooked horror movie with some really good scares and a chilling final act.

Rent or buy Session 9 on Amazon .

1408 (2007)

A grieving father who specializes in disproving supernatural phenomena ( John Cusack ) puts the legend of an hotel room with a supposedly deadly curse to the test, only to find a reason to believe.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: From director Mikael Håfström, 1408 is another haunted hotel story from author Stephen King that mostly plays out like a spooky one-man show, while also starring Cusack’s future Cell co-star, Samuel L. Jackson.

Rent or buy 1408 on Amazon .

The Orphanage (2007)

During a visit to the foster home where she grew up, a woman (Belén Rueda) and her husband (Fernando Cayo) accidentally lose their young son (Roger Príncep) and turn to unusual measures in hopes of finding him.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: From producer Guillermo del Toro and writer and director J.A. Bayona, the Spanish-language thriller The Orphanage is already spine-tingling as a missing child story, but its ghostly elements make for an unforgettable frightening experience.

Rent or buy The Orphanage on Amazon .

Lake Mungo (2008)

A family from Australia recalls in interviews the strange events that would begin to plague their home shortly after their teenage daughter drowned to death.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: From writer and director Joel Anderson, and one of the most unlikely After Dark Horror Fest entries, Lake Mungo is an overlooked supernatural drama that's so mysteriously compelling, delicately constructed, and convincingly acted, no one could fault you for assuming this faux documentary was real.

Stream Lake Mungo on Tubi . Stream Lake Mungo on Plex . Rent or buy Lake Mungo on Amazon .

Grave Encounters (2011)

The typically skeptical crew of a docuseries that explores notorious sightings of alleged hauntings find the irrefutable evidence they never thought they would after locking themselves in an empty insane asylum.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: Part satire of paranormal investigation reality series like Ghost Adventures , and another part relentless nightmare fuel, Grave Encounters is another relatively underrated found footage thriller featuring some of the most unforgivably frightening supernatural entities you could imagine.

Stream Grave Encounters on Freevee through Amazon . Stream Grave Encounters on Tubi . Stream Grave Encounters on Plex .

Insidious (2011)

A teacher (Patrick Wilson), his wife (Rose Byrne) and their children begin to suffer from very strange and disturbing circumstances after their eldest son (Ty Simpkins) mysteriously falls into a coma.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: Writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan of Saw fame already turned the haunted house genre on its head with the unique concept of Insidious , but rarely had a film of this kind been so visually arresting and indelibly frightening at this time either.

Stream Insidious on Max . Rent or buy Insidious on Amazon .

The Pact (2012)

After her sister goes missing not long after the death of their mother, a woman (Caity Lotz) begins to suspect that the secret behind her disappearance is tied to the unexplainable events she begins to experience in her childhood home.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: If you have never seen or heard of writer and director Nicholas McCarthy’s The Pact , I highly recommend it to people who enjoy engrossing mystery stories that do not hold back on high-stakes frights.

Stream The Pact on Tubi . Rent or buy The Pact on Amazon .

The Woman In Black (2012)

A widowed legal practitioner (Daniel Radcliffe) is shocked to learn that an abandoned manor in a small London village is haunted by a vengeful spirit who struck fear in the locals.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: Based on the novel by Susan Hill, The Woman in Black is one of Daniel Radcliffe’s best movies outside of the Harry Potter franchise in the way it harkens back to a forgotten era of gothic tales of the unexplainable, but with haunting imagery for audiences of any generation to get spooked by

Stream The Woman In Black on Paramount+ . Rent or buy The Woman In Black on Amazon .

The Conjuring (2013)

A family calls upon the help of famed paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) to help rid their new Rhode Island home of the evil presence inhabiting it.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: While the more memorable antagonists in any of the Conjuring Universe movies are of the demonic sort, director James Wan’s original that started it all has its fair share of great and grandly creepy ghostly moments.

Stream The Conjuring on Max . Rent or buy The Conjuring on Amazon .

Ouija: Origin Of Evil (2016)

A mother of two (Annalise Basso and Lulu Wilson) who makes a living as a fake medium (Elizabeth Reaser) adds a new element to her performance that turns out to be much more real than she could have envisioned.

Why it is a seriously scary ghost movie: Some of the earliest proof of writer and director Mike Flanagan’s expertise in horror storytelling was the surprisingly taut and viscerally unsettling Ouija: Origin of Evil — a prequel to an almost universally reviled generic teen thriller from 2014.

Stream Ouija: Origin Of Evil on Netflix . Rent or buy Ouija: Origin Of Evil on Amazon .

If these ghost movies do not manage to scare you, we hope they at least warm your spirit as a horror fan.

13 Top Horror Films Shot in the Pacific Northwest

Find nearby locations seen in spooky movies and series.

Seattle and the Pacific Northwest are part of cinema history. And while movie fans may remember the light romantic comedies of the 1990s like Tom Hanks’ Sleepless in Seattle or 10 Things I Hate About You , the region’s grey skies, stormy seacoast and foreboding woods make a natural setting for the horror genre. Celebrate this Halloween by visiting a location of a horror movie or watching one or more at home.

Fittingly, our journey into Pacific Northwest horror cinema begins with the unlucky No. 13. We have picked 13 movies and series that are worth watching around Halloween and were made in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. So, fill up your popcorn bowl and bring a blanket to pull over your eyes. Some of these movies are truly scary.

Scene from Fear Alki Beach near Duwamish Head

The Ring

The Ring — the nearly $250 million grossing film about a cursed VHS tape that kills its viewers a week after watching it — may be the most popular scary movie filmed in Washington.  Largely shot on Fidalgo and Whidbey islands, the 2002 movie was praised by critics for its moody atmosphere. Scenes were shot at Deception Pass Bridge , the Port Townsend ferry terminal and Camp Firwood near Lake Whatcom, among other eerie spots in the Puget Sound. Head to any of those locales on a rainy, dark day and you’ll immediately understand why they were picked.

The Hand that Rocks the Cradle

Released in 1992, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle is a psychological thriller starring Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra about loss, revenge and murder, in which a vengeful nanny terrorizes a couple in their home. Many scenes were shot in private homes in Seattle and Tacoma.

Starring Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon, Fear is definitely worth watching. That’s not just because it’s well-acted (Wahlberg was nominated for “best villain” at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards), but because it was partly filmed in locations on Mercer Island and in Seattle. Head to Duwamish Head on Harbor Avenue Southwest in Seattle to find one of the film’s most memorable settings.

Stinson Green Mansion

The Changeling

Starring George C. Scott of Patton and Dr. Strangelove fame, The Changeling is a movie director Martin Scorsese included in his top 11 scariest horror films of all time. A music professor relocates to a vacant mansion in Seattle and discovers a ghostly presence in the attic. Lake Washington, Boeing Field and the University of Washington are all used as locations in the 1980 film, but the 1901-built English Tudor-style Stimson-Green Mansion at 1204 Minor Ave. in Seattle is the scene stealer.

The Ward

Directed by Halloween and Escape from New York filmmaker John Carpenter, The Ward has a simple plot that is perfect for Halloween. An institutionalized woman becomes terrorized by a ghost. The 2010 film’s scary scenes were filmed in Medical Lake, Washington at Eastern State Hospital, as well as around Spokane and at Eastern Washington University.

The Vanishing

A remake of the chilling Dutch original The Vanishing is yet another movie shot in the Seattle area. Featuring Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock, a man searches for answers when his girlfriend vanishes without a trace at a gas station. Film locations for this 1993 flick include the Mountainside Shell station in North Bend, miscellaneous locations around Mount St. Helens, as well as the Seattle Yacht Club, Pioneer Square Station and Snoqualmie Falls.

Twin Peaks Twedes Cafe

Based on a H.P. Lovecraft book, Cthulhu tells the tale of a Seattle professor stumbling into dangerous and apocalyptic events on the Oregon coast . While much of the 2007 movie was filmed in Astoria and Florence, Oregon, some scenes were shot in Seattle, Maple Valley, Longview, Issaquah and Des Moines. This low-budget film is just creepy enough to make it entertaining.

Twin Peaks

While Frasier is probably the most popular TV show ever set in Washington state, the cult classic Twin Peaks has to be No. 2. The movie, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me was filmed in the same locations right in Seattle’s backyard. Snohomish High School and Bellevue’s Highland Middle School were featured in the 1992 movie, as was Twede’s Cafe in North Bend and The Roadhouse Restaurant & Inn in Fall City.

Rose Red

Most of Steven King’s 2002 mini-series Rose Red was filmed around Seattle. The Space Needle, University of Washington, Magnuson Park and a handful of other locations were used, but the most recognizable location is found in Lakewood. At 8601 North Thorne Lane Southwest, you’ll find Lakewood’s Thornewood Castle off Interstate 5. One glance and you’ll see why it was used in the series.

The Deliberate Stranger

With scenes shot around Seattle, the two-part mini-series The Deliberate Stranger starring Mark Harmon follows the actions of one of Seattle’s most-infamous residents, serial killer Ted Bundy. Based on the book by the late Seattle Times reporter Richard W. Larsen, the 1986 film presents a chilling portrait of a sociopath who stalked the area in the early and mid-1970s.

Practical Magic

Filmed around the Salish Sea, Practical Magic stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witch sisters. The movie is much more lighthearted than spooky, but still works for those seeking out something to watch during Halloween. Most of the 1998 film was shot at Whidbey Island and the San Juan Islands. Numerous spots in the community of Coupeville were also featured. Grab a bite at Toby’s Tavern in Coupeville, which appears as “The Catch and Fry” in the movie.

Rootbeerxxx in Issaquah

Dante’s Peak

Although more of an action/adventure movie than horror film, Dante’s Peak is eerie enough to qualify for Halloween fare. The 1997 film was primarily filmed in Wallace, Idaho , but it also features shots of Mount St. Helens and Baker Hot Springs in the Mount Baker National Forest .

Lovers Lane

Before she was known for her comedy antics in the 2000 horror genre spoof Scary Movie , Washington’s own Anna Faris played a small part in Lovers Lane . Filmed in Issaquah, Fall City and Seattle, this slasher flick is the typical teen horror movie. The Adventure Bowling Center in Snoqualmie and Issaquah’s Triple XXX Rootbeer Drive-In were featured.

10 horror movies about haunted attractions, ranked.

From haunted houses to amusement parks infested with serial killers, here are 10 horror movies set in spooky attractions.

Aside from dressing up and going trick-or-treating, one of the most popular activities on Halloween night is visiting haunted attractions. This includes haunted houses and hayrides as well as amusement parks and ghost trains. Ghosts and ghouls, unfortunately, do not exist in real life so we have to bring ourselves to the situations we love to see in horror films.

RELATED:  10 Underrated Horror Movies from the 2000s You Have to See

Things get particularly meta when horror movies include haunted houses and rides. And quite often, those are some of the scariest films to watch. So, in time for Halloween, let's review and rank ten horror movies set at haunted attractions.

Blood Fest (2018)

An enthusiastic teenager and his friends attend a festival that celebrates all things horror. But when they get there, they and the other guests are attacked by the employees. There appears to be no escape either as everyone fights to survive this real-life horror movie.

Much to its own detriment, Blood Fest is a self-aware stab at the horror genre . The film is just so ambitious and, perhaps, smug that any semblance of its greater point fails to shine through. That being said, there are some amusing moments and the cast is personable enough.

The Hollow (2004)

In the small town of Sleepy Hollow, the presence of Ichabod Crane's living descendants triggers a local curse. The Headless Horseman now rides again and seeks revenge on those who wronged him.

The Hollow — which features a haunted hayride — is definitely aimed at children and teenagers, but there are things to like here anyway. First off, this TV-movie premiered on ABC Family long before it turned into Freeform. It stars Kevin Zegers ( Wrong Turn ), Kaley Cuoco ( The Big Bang Theory ), and Nick Carter of The Backstreet Boys. So, yes, this one is meant to appeal to the younger set. On the other hand, the decent special effects are fun for anyone, regardless of age.

The Park (2003)

An amusement park reopens after a terrible accident took place there fourteen years ago. The park is still unsafe, though, as a young boy has now gone missing there. As people search for him, they, too, become victims of this haunted park.

RELATED:  10 Asian Slashers That You Never Heard Of (But Need To Watch Right Now)

Andrew Lau's The Park is considered unique among East Asian horror movies. It does not shirk the tropes innate to its contemporaries, but  The Park makes good use of its setting. Nevertheless, the film's barely-there story is incoherent. The saving grace in this film is without a doubt the park itself.

Dark Ride (2006)

Ten years have passed since two teens were murdered inside an amusement park by an unhinged man named Jonah. Today, a group of college kids pass through the now-abandoned attraction, unaware that the killer has found his way back to the Dark Ride.

Low expectations will help if you're seeing  Dark Ride  for the first time. Is it a thrilling movie? Not so much. Are there moments where it breaks away from being a standard slasher? Sometimes. It's fairly average, and the occasions where it's not are rare.

The Houses October Built (2014)

A group of friends hits the road in search of the scariest underground haunted attractions. Though they have yet to find one that meets their high standards, they catch wind of the infamous Blue Skeleton. It is there that they find a haunted house worthy of their praise. Unfortunately for them, the scares at Blue Skeleton are legit.

The Houses October Built has such an agreeable core concept that it is disheartening to see how disappointing the overall film is. It often succeeds in spite of itself, but there are so many missteps along the way. Not to mention, the pacing leaves much to be desired. An even more frustrating sequel was released in 2017.

Hell House LLC (2015)

A documentary crew investigates a tragedy that befell a haunted attraction outside New York City. Hell House LLC was built inside an abandoned hotel, and on opening night, disaster struck. At least fifteen people died in the haunted house, but the reasons why are not clear.

RELATED:  10 Found-Footage Horror Movies You've Probably Never Seen (But Should)

Found footage is absolutely the perfect choice for this theme. The divisive style makes audiences feel like they are part of the show too, and the real-time effect elevates the scariness.  Hell House LLC  was lightning in a bottle. Alas, the filmmakers have not been able to replicate what made the first movie so successful in the two sequels.

Haunt (2019)

On Halloween night, Harper agrees to go out with her friends. They and two guys then drive out of their way to a haunted house. Once inside, however, they quickly learn nothing before them is fake. Everything is real, and their lives are in danger.

Haunt is kind of like an off-brand Halloween treat that tastes like the good stuff, but you can still tell if it's not authentic. That's not to say it is bad either. In the moment,  Haunt more than sates your need for retro, brutal splatter flicks with a keen eye for design.

Hell Fest (2018)

A college student named Natalie joins her friends for a night out at Hell Fest, a horror-themed amusement park. When there, they initially have trouble distinguishing between what is staged and what is not. To make matters more disconcerting, Natalie feels as if one of the park's masked employees is following them. Truth be told — she's not wrong.

RELATED:  10 Slasher Movies You Have Never Heard of Before

Hell Fest is mimetic of other slasher movies, but the production values, a mostly affable cast of characters, and some unadulterated violence makes this one park worth visiting for some old school terror.

Waxwork (1988)

A mysterious wax museum sets up in a small town. College student Mark, his girlfriend, and their friends all visit out of curiosity. As soon as they are inside, though, they are literally absorbed into the morbid displays.

Waxwork acts like an anthology where each character deals with a different and unique situation within the wax displays. The rest of the film acts as a large framing device. In the end, Waxwork is a likable comedy with some gruesome gore achieved through practical effects. There is also a sequel called  Waxwork II: Lost in Time that was released in 1992.

The Funhouse (1981)

A teen girl defies her parents by sneaking out to a traveling carnival with her friends. They then somehow end up witnessing a deformed carny murder someone. With them now trapped inside a funhouse with the assailant, the teens hide and pray until daylight or help arrives.

Tobe Hooper's 1981 slasher  The Funhouse is one of the director's best. It possesses atmosphere, and it has a fairly plausible scenario. Dean Koontz handled a novelization, but he wrote it under the pseudonym of Owen West. Due to the movie taking longer to make, the novelization was released first.

Deeply Unsettling Haunted Playgrounds You Can Visit Right Now

Erin McCann

You've heard tales of haunted houses and amusement parks - but haunted playgrounds provide plenty of creepy stories as well. Playground ghost stories are made even eerier by the presence of ghostly children, who are rumored to drift through yards located at former insane asylums, abandoned schools , and even the middle of cemeteries.

Swings that move on their own. Children's laughter echoing when there are no kids present. Ghostly apparitions. All are rumored to plague these creepy playgrounds . These sites are still standing, but remember that trespassing in closed areas is not a wise decision. Besides the criminal charges you may face, these scary playground stories warn of the chilling fate that could await you at the bottom of that slide.

The Spirits Of 1920s Students Haunt Desoto Grade School

The Spirits Of 1920s Students Haunt Desoto Grade School

In 1925, a major tornado ripped through the town of Desoto, IL. Over 300 teachers and students hiding in the basement of Desoto Grade School were killed when the building collapsed on top of them. Since then, children's voices have been heard laughing and playing, and apparitions of children wearing out-of-date, torn clothes have been seen on the playground.

Laughter Turns To Screams In Shelton Road Park

Laughter Turns To Screams In Shelton Road Park

Locals say the small park on Shelton Road in Madison, AL, is home to several ghost children. At night, happy kids can be heard playing and laughing - but eventually the sounds turn to screams of terror.

Screams Sound On A Playground Built On Top Of An Insane Asylum

Screams Sound On A Playground Built On Top Of An Insane Asylum

In the 1950s, Sunland Hospital was built in Orlando, FL, to treat tuberculosis patients. After a vaccine was discovered, the building became a mental hospital. It was eventually shut down  for abuse of patients, neglect, a rodent infestation, and unsafe surgical conditions.

The abandoned building was believed to be haunted , and ghost hunters broke in to experience the odd sounds and lights people claimed to see. But after a curious trespasser fell down an elevator shaft, the building was completely torn down. A playground was built on the site, and it may have inherited the ghostly activity: visitors say they've witnessed swings moving on their own and heard the sounds of children crying and screaming.

Swings Move By Themselves In Dead Children's Playground

Swings Move By Themselves In Dead Children's Playground

Dead Children's Playground, located in the middle of Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, AL, is believed to be the most haunted place in the entire state. Some say the paranormal activity comes from restless spirits; the bodies of several abducted children were found there in the 1960s. Others claim the ghosts are those of the people buried in the graveyard.

Visitors to the playground at night have reported seeing  swings move by themselves , noting dust rising as if from footsteps, and hearing children's voices. Guests also report spotting orbs of floating light, many just about the height of a child.

Phantom Bodies Hang From The Trees In Hummel Park

Phantom Bodies Hang From The Trees In Hummel Park

Hummel Park's playground in Omaha, NE, might be one of the most haunted places in the state. Many people were rumored to have been lynched there in the past, and the park served as a dumping ground for several murder victims.

Visitors have been frightened  by phantom figures, floating lights, screams, and ghostly bodies hanging from trees. Several animals have reportedly been found sacrificed as well.

Handprints Appear At Devil's Playground

Handprints Appear At Devil's Playground

A Calgary schoolhouse supposedly burned to the ground decades ago, killing several children and inspiring the legend of the Devil's Playground. Visitors to the site claim to hear children playing and laughing. Animal bones are sometimes found  placed in strange patterns , and handprints appear on car windows.

Matthew Whaley Lingers At His Namesake School

Matthew Whaley Lingers At His Namesake School

Matthew Whaley died in Williamsburg, VA, in 1696, when he was nine years old. According to his mother's wishes, a school was named after him. Little did she know it would supposedly become one of the most haunted schools in the country.

Matthew's ghost has been seen by students and teachers in the building, on the school grounds, and on the playground. The ghosts of two young boys who were lynched on the school grounds in the 1960s are said to have appeared as well.

A Ghostly Child Continues To Swing In Argentina

A Ghostly Child Continues To Swing In Argentina

Locals in Firmat, Argentina claim a certain playground swing is haunted. Apparently, it has been swinging by itself  for five years - even when people try to stop it from moving. The swing is believed to be used by the ghost of a small child, who died nearby before the playground was built.

Cold Breezes Sweep Through Pennhurst School And Asylum

Cold Breezes Sweep Through Pennhurst School And Asylum

Pennhurst was a state-funded school and hospital in Pennsylvania that operated from 1908 until 1987. Originally intended to be a boarding school and hospital, the building eventually became an asylum. Many residents were treated barbarically, and were subjected to unnecessary injections and bound to children's cribs.

Today, the site houses a creepy playground and a haunted house attraction. Visitors to Pennhurst report feeling cold breezes brushing by, hearing children's screams, and even seeing full body apparitions.

Voices Can Be Heard At The Former Eloise Asylum

Voices Can Be Heard At The Former Eloise Asylum

The Eloise Asylum in Westland, MI, was essentially a little city . At one time it had 75 buildings, including a bakery, a post office, and a cemetery. The asylum was eventually reduced to four buildings, and converted for use as an offices.

Today, the buildings and on-site playground seem a little spooky. Voices are heard , lights turn on and off, and growls and moans sound. A woman in white has also been spotted roaming the property.

A Crying Woman Appears In Barnard Park

A Crying Woman Appears In Barnard Park

The little playground at Barnard Park in Fremont, NE,  was once a cemetery . Ghostly apparitions have been witnessed roaming the area, include a crying woman . A male ghost sometimes appears on a park bench, and several of the surrounding homes are thought to be haunted as well.

Some locals believe that, when the cemetery was relocated, not all the bodies were removed. The unmoved remains could be the catalyst for the ghostly activity.

A Graveyard Was Discovered Beneath Weccacoe Playground

A Graveyard Was Discovered Beneath Weccacoe Playground

As many as 5,000 people are buried under Weccacoe playground in Philadelphia, PA, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a community space. Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church used the spot as a burial ground in the 1800s . The site later became a dump until someone decided to build a playground. Renovations unearthed the old graveyard.

With all those human remains right underfoot, ghostly activity seems all but guaranteed.

Strange Knocking Can Be Heard In Boothe Memorial Park

Strange Knocking Can Be Heard In Boothe Memorial Park

In addition to a playground, Boothe Memorial Park in Stratford, CT, includes a number of odd items , like a mini windmill, a blacksmith shop, and a model train museum. It might also contain some restless spirits.

Visitors have heard strange knocking noises and voices, and experienced a general eerie feeling in the park. It probably doesn't help that the park is located next to a graveyard in which shadowy forms have been observed.

An Eerie Figure Walks Through Hooper Springs Park

The playground located in the quiet Hooper Springs Park near Soda Springs, ID, is said to be haunted. Visitors have reported seeing  swings moving by themselves and a ghostly figure walking through the grounds.

Watch spooky footage thought to be Walt Disney’s ghost roaming Disneyland at night

PREPARE to be terrified as a video has been shared on social media thought to be Walt Disney's GHOST.

The video was originally filmed in 2009 at Disneyland in California.

Creepy footage appears to show a ghost at Disneyland - which many claim is the founder Walt Disney

However, the scary images have since been shared on TikTok with many claiming the figure is the man who created the theme parks, who died in 1966.

Shared by the account Weird Wonderz, it was part of their Weird Mysteries series.

The night time footage shows an eerie figure walking through the park after hours.

The translucent figure walks through fences and even on water, leading to claims that it could be former park guests or the creator Walt Disney.

One person wrote: "Damn, I don't want to go to Disneyland."

Another person joked: "It's cute that he goes around his park even when he's dead."

The video claims there has been "years" of people claiming the theme parks are haunted, and not just at the Haunted Mansion attraction.

The rumours also followed the myth that Walt Disney had his body cryogenically frozen at the park, although his family have debunked this.

Another creepy side to the Disney parks are the many abandoned attractions which have been left to rot over the years.

Walt died in 1966, although many think he still roams the parks at night

Cleveland's Most Haunted: 21 places where ghosts roam (and you can, too)

Cleveland, Ohio - Variety Theatre caretaker Patrick Colvin often visits the long-closed theater on Lorain Avenue late at night.

He’s not alone.

“I know of at least 19 spirits that come in and out of that place,” says Colvin, a founder of the Friends of the Historic Variety Theatre who has led the campaign to restore the once-glorious, now faded vaudeville/movie theater that opened in 1927.

“I know about a dozen by name. Two are former performers, I think, and several are people who worked here.”

Friends of the Historic Variety Theatre

The Variety Theatre opened on Nov. 24, 1927, with a screening of Clara Bow’s “Hula.” The Spanish Gothic vaudeville and movie house was designed by Cleveland architect Nicola Petti, who also designed the Cedar Lee Theatre in Cleveland Heights.

Warner Bros. purchased it in 1929 and kept it until 1954. The 1,900-seat theater was the most popular on the West Side, full day and night.

Since it closed in the mid-’80s, those seats have been empty. Most of the time.

“When I come in on my own at night, I really feel them. I always take the very last seat on the far house right side, that’s my seat, and I let them talk to me.”

John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer

Colvin says he often mulls over the ongoing restoration plans for the Variety, which are finally taking off after decades of planning and fundraising. Just last year, a replica of the original  vertical blade-style marquee, pictured, was installed.

“They tell me to keep doing what we’re doing,” says Colvin.

creepy ghost filmed in public park

Colvin recounts one particularly dramatic encounter when he was working on the upper level. “The story goes that sometime in the 1930s, a stage rig guy fell onto a light bar and fell to the stage and died on impact. On Memorial Day 2012, I will never forget the day, I was up there trying to pull the dead weights and a deep male voice said, ‘Pull it now.’ I thought, ‘Wait a minute, there’s nobody behind me.’ ”

creepy ghost filmed in public park

Did he pull the weight?

“Well, yes,” says Colvin. “I was afraid for a minute I’d get hit and fall to the ground, but I was fine.”

Colvin says another ghost many visitors have seen is “a woman in a white dress in the back of the auditorium. Her name is Clara, and it’s believed she performed here.”

creepy ghost filmed in public park

Colvin says he thinks the renovation plans may have stirred up the spirits at Variety, but in a good way.

“It’s been dark and inactive here for so long, they seem startled.”

With big plans for the future of the Variety, the spirits will have to get used to company.

The Variety is just one of many supposedly spirited Cleveland venues. The list includes theaters, restaurants, bars, cemeteries, a submarine, a train and couple of castles.

In the spirit of the season, here’s a guide. Not a believer? Many offer tours so you can see for yourself.

Franklin Castle

4308 Franklin Blvd.: Cleveland's most haunted building no longer looks so scary. The massive four-story stone mansion in Ohio City has been beautifully renovated after fires in 1999, 2004 and 2011, the latest of numerous tragedies that have befallen the house Hannes Tiedemann built in 1881. It's set to be the new home of the popular garage rock label Norton Records. That's the latest — and happiest — in a long line of fascinating and often terrible events that have led to its haunted reputation. In the early days, several of Tiedemann's children died in the home under mysterious circumstances. In later years, its tunnels and hidden passages allegedly made it a Prohibition favorite — and a meeting place for local members of the Nazi Party. It was even said there was a massacre at a party meeting in the '30s , though no records have been found to support this. Later on, the Romano family moved in; they said they had several paranormal experiences. Owner Sam Muscatello said he found human bones in a closet.

In subsequent years, two owners tried to renovate and revive the castle, but both failed, including Judy Garland’s fifth husband, Michael DeVinko, aka Mickey Deans. Cleveland Memory Project

Playhouse Square

It’s no surprise Cleveland’s largest theater complex is said to be haunted by numerous ghosts. Each has its favorite theater, according to Haunted Cleveland Ghost Tour’s Chuck Gove, who says the Playhouse Square stop is a favorite with patrons on this year’s tour. The Lady in White prefers the Hanna, while the Man in Green sticks to the Palace.

Erie Street Cemetery

East Ninth Street: It’s said the spirit of Joc-O-Sot, the tragic Sauk chief who died while touring Europe in a “Wild West show,” is still restless and roaming this downtown cemetery. The chief had requested a burial on tribal grounds in Wisconsin, but was buried against his wishes in Cleveland, in a grave now marked by a cracked tombstone.

“He just wanted to be with his people,” says Gove. Gove adds that Erie Street shows the most paranormal activity when his tour guests use dowsing rods each week. One even captured a photo of a ghostly man walking through the graves.

House of Wills

2491 East 55th St.: Today the crumbling House of Wills funeral home on Cleveland’s East 55th Street is known as the haunted, creepy space with a mysterious name. It’s a trite reputation for one of the most notable names in Cleveland’s African-American history. Long before it was an abandoned funeral home — with some of the quirkiest viewing rooms in Cleveland, like the Cloud and Egyptian-themed spaces — it was a notable civil-rights-era gathering spot.

Before that, it was a popular German social hall. Its haunted reputation stems from the hasty way the home was shut down in 2005. Since then, it has sat empty and decaying, though a new owner has been opening it up to the public for photography and ghost-hunting events. At 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, the Cleveland Paranormal Society is hosting a ticketed tour. Info: tinyurl.com/HauntWills .

Fairport Harbor Lighthouse

Those in charge of Fairport Harbor Lighthouse aren’t keeping it a secret that it’s supposedly haunted. It’s right there on their website: “The Ghost Cat Story.” The four-legged ghostly feline even has a name, Sentinel. Legend says that in 1871, Capt. Joseph Babcock was the head keeper of the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse. He gave his bedridden wife many cats. Most disappeared when she died, except for the gray Sentinel.

Many say he’s still there today, including the Animal Planet channel, which visited in 2010. The lighthouse is open to the public; call 440-354-4825 to arrange a tour or paranormal visit.

Lorain County Metro Parks

Gore Orphanage Road

Vermilion: Though most historians agree that Gore Orphanage never actually existed, that hasn’t stopped the stories from swirling around this hilly road in Lorain County — no doubt in large part thanks to its creepy name. Most of the stories center on the remnants of the Swift Mansion, pictured, on Gore Orphanage Road.

Thomas Ondrey,The Plain Dealer

Others are about the Light of Hope Orphanage, further down the country drive. Perhaps the stories come from the fact that the Swift family held frequent seances, and had four children die in childhood. Perhaps from a nonlethal fire at the orphanage. Wherever they took root, even today many say the feel a great sense of dread driving down the street.

Pictured: A stone pillar in the woods of a Lorain Co. Metro Park in Brownhelm Twp. marks the approximate location of the former Swift mansion.

Cleveland Gray's Armory

1234 Bolivar Road: Built in 1893, this imposing sandstone castle has seen its fair share of hauntings, according to those who have spent time there. The out-of-this-world residents include the dancing Lady in White, who may have been a regular when this was a Prohibition-era speakeasy. Others have said they have seen soldiers from the Cleveland Grays volunteer militia, which fought in the Civil War.

Chuck Gove says the ghosts also include a construction worker who died in the building and a former caretaker, whose cherry-vanilla pipe smoke can still be smelled on occasion.

Drury Mansion

8615 Euclid Ave.: One of only four Millionaires’ Row mansions still standing, the Drury Mansion was one of the last built, in 1910. Francis Drury, who made his fortune in stoves, and his family didn’t stay long — heading to Gates Mills by 1926, where they built a replica of the 52-room home. No one knows whether the ghosts are from their short-lived time in the house, or from its era as a halfway house for the Ohio Adult Parole Authority, who took it over in 1972.

Lore says two policemen in the 1970s were terrified to be in the building, which has also been a boardinghouse and a home for unwed mothers. Today it is a private facility owned by the Cleveland Clinic.

Soldiers and Sailors Monument

Public Square: The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, where guests can explore the unused catacombs below the structure during occasional, specially scheduled tours, is said to be haunted by Civil War soldiers. Many ghost hunters here have said they temporarily lost power in their camera and batteries downstairs, then found it was restored later.

The next tunnel tour is in April.

5000 Euclid Ave.: With more than a century of history, it’s no wonder the Agora is said to be haunted. Opened in 1913 as the grand Metropolitan Theatre for opera and theater, and later home to the WHK Auditorium, the building at 5000 Euclid Ave. has a storied past. Somewhere along the way, it is said to have picked up the Ghost in Yellow, who is said to haunt the stage and backstage areas to this day.

Rider's 1812 Inn

792 Mentor Ave., Painesville: One of the most oft-told ghost stories in town must be that of this 1812-built country inn, the subject of many TV shows, ghost hunts and more. It’s said the inn is haunted by Suzanne, the “ugliest woman in Painesville,” whom Joseph Rider married for her money in 1834. She died mysteriously six weeks after her marriage, the story goes, but has never really left the building.

Pickwick and Frolic

2035 East Fourth St.: It would be surprising if this historic spot wasn't haunted. It's certainly had a haunting history. Opened on the site of the famed Euclid Avenue Opera House in 2002, 127 years to the date of the original theater, pictured, and making use of its foundation, Pickwick is rich in Cleveland history. Don's Pomeroy House

13664 Pearl Road, Strongsville: Few who visit this lovely, special-occasion Strongsville restaurant likely know the fascinating history of the circa-1847 mansion. Built by Justice of the Peace Alanson Pomeroy as the Homestead, the site also had a general store and was a stop on the Underground Railroad in the abolitionist stronghold of Strongsville. Many speculate that the ghosts who haunt the lower level date back to this era, when fleeing slaves would hide in the cellar.

Haunted Parks: 6 Ghostly Getaways

Ghost stories might scare your campfire circle. They can also offer hyperlocal histories for travel destinations around the country. Learn about a few spectral park visitors — if you dare — including kidnapped sailors and a skinny-dipping conservationist.

Fog over Gettysburg National Battlefield, rumored to be one of the most haunted national park sites in the country.

Thank you to Danielle LaRock and Cassie Yahnian, hosts of the “National Park After Dark” podcast for sharing their research and stories with us!

Olympic National Park, Washington

A fisherman stands on a dock as fog rolls down from the mountains at Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park.

Lake Crescent has been the site of several mysterious disappearances and accidents over the years, but perhaps none so chilling as the “Lady of the Lake.” In 1940, two fishermen discovered an unusually well-preserved body floating on the surface of the 12-mile-wide lake. Deep-water chemicals had turned her skin hard and waxy, and her face wasn’t recognizable.

9 Spooky National Park Sites

As the days get shorter, the nights get spookier—at least during the month of October. If you’re looking for a few mysterious places to explore before telling ghost stories by…

Dental records helped identify the body as Hallie Latham Illingworth, a woman who had vanished from nearby Port Angeles back in 1937. She had been working at a tavern when she met her third husband, but things were bleak from the start — she routinely showed up to work with bruises and black eyes. When Illingworth disappeared six months into their marriage, her husband claimed she’d run off to Alaska with a sailor.

Ropes tied around Illingworth and marks on her body eventually helped authorities convict him of her murder (though he only served nine years). Ghost sightings are common among visitors and locals alike, particularly around the Spruce Railroad Trail and the Lake Crescent Lodge, formerly the tavern where Illingworth worked.

Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana

Storm clouds over Indiana Dunes National Park, where the ghost of a conservationist is said to roam the beaches.

Visitors to Indiana Dunes report seeing the spirit of “Diana of the Dunes,” also known as Alice Mabel Gray — the reason the dunes are now protected lands.

Born in 1881, Gray attended college at 16, receiving her bachelor’s degree and a slew of honorable mentions in biology, math and astronomy, all before most women in the U.S. could even vote. After picking up a master’s degree in Germany, she came home to Chicago to a job as a stenographer. She hated the limitations of a 9-to-5 lifestyle and found refuge at Indiana Dunes.

At 34 years old, Gray left society behind and permanently moved to the lakeshore, living on her own in a rundown abandoned shack. She studied the ecology of the dunes, writing, hiking and occasionally frolicking naked in the waves. Sailors spotted her skinny dipping (viewed as an outrage at the time), and newspapers picked up her story, calling her a mermaid, “Nympho of the Dunes” and “Diana of the Dunes” after the Roman goddess of wildlife. She used her newfound fame to talk about conservation and why the dunes shouldn’t be destroyed. Though she died of kidney failure before the area was protected as a national park site in 1966, Gray is a direct reason the land is protected. The park honors her memory with “ Diana’s Dare ,” a challenge to visit sites associated with Gray to see the park through her eyes.

Salem Maritime National Historic Site, Massachusetts

Mercy Tavern, a reportedly haunted bar near the Salem Maritime National Historic Site in Salem, Massachusetts.

The wrongfully accused defendants of the 1692 witch trials aren’t the only lingering spirits in Salem. In the 1700s, the city was a bustling port with traders from all over the world, contributing to the rise of gambling and brothels.

The wealthy merchant Elias Haskey Derby (owner of Derby House, part of the present-day national park site) created a side business smuggling jewels, foreign metals, art and other valuables into Salem. He realized he needed two things to grow his business: a network of tunnels to move the goods underground and a steady stream of new crew members for his ships (hard labor and rampant disease made less-than-attractive help wanted ads). Derby realized he could kill two birds with one stone by using a tunnel to a local brothel to kidnap young men to work for him.

Today, the brothel is a restaurant called Mercy Tavern, known as one of the most haunted places in Salem. Diners claim to hear voices and see sailors sitting at the bar, and employees report shouts and loud noises under the floorboards. There are plenty of rumors about what happened in those underground passages, but ironically, Derby was able to build the tunnel system by telling the town he wanted to revamp its marshlands into parks (which he did!).

Yellowstone National Park, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming

Old Faithful erupting in front of the inn with the same name, a site reportedly haunted by the ghosts of several former guests.

Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Inn is home to its fair share of ghost stories, from a crying child in sneakers who disappears when anyone tries to help him to a sea merchant jostling door handles and peering in windows.

Perhaps the most famous spirit is the Headless Bride of Room 127. Legend has it that in 1915, two newlyweds were violently arguing after the husband had gambled away all their money. He fled the park, and the bride wasn’t seen for days. According to the story, hotel staff finally found her in the bathtub — without her head.

People claimed to see the bride floating around the inn, crying and upset, and the story became extremely well-known. Yet, in 1983, an assistant manager at the inn admitted to making the whole thing up. It remains unclear whether the murder actually happened, but the bride has made her way into park folklore regardless.

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

A travertine formation at Mammoth Cave National Park.

Before Mammoth Cave was protected by the National Park Service, it was privately owned, changing hands throughout the 1800s. Owners almost always offered tours to the public, even during the Civil War.

In 1839, a lawyer named John Croghan purchased the caves for $10,000 with even bigger plans: a tuberculosis sanatorium. Croghan believed the cave environment would treat or even cure the disease, since ancient archaeological finds were incredibly well preserved in the cave’s depths. Enslaved people built huts (including two that still exist today) where 13 patients planned to live for a year. Public tours occasionally crossed paths with the patients, and visitors would hear echoing coughs and stumble on gaunt patients in hospital gowns by lantern light.

Initially, it did seem like the air quality was helping the patients get better, but things quickly took a turn: Five patients died, and the experiment was nixed. Visitors today recount hearing coughing and seeing the shuffling apparitions of the patients.

Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania

The grave of Jennie Wade at Gettysburg National Battlefield in Pennsylvania. A flag flies at all times beside her monument.

More than 7,800 soldiers lost their lives in July 1863 during one of the most intense battles in U.S. military history, so it’s no wonder many consider Gettysburg one of the most haunted places in the country. While less densely haunted than other parts of the battlefield, park-goers can visit the home of the only civilian killed during the battle, the Jennie Wade House.

Mary Virginia “Jennie” Wade was visiting to help care for her sister’s newborn baby and do her part to keep the soldiers fed. More than 150 bullets struck the house over the course of the fighting.

On the third and final day, an errant bullet flew through two closed doors and struck Wade as she was kneading bread dough in her sister’s kitchen. The shot hit her torso and killed her instantly. She was eventually laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery after her mother campaigned to have her buried there with the soldiers from the battle. A perpetually raised American flag flies next to her monument, an honor she is one of only a few women in the U.S. to receive. Visitors say they see Wade walking through her family’s home, wandering the fields and even appearing in photographs taken at the house.

Original Ghostbusters Filming Locations in New York and Los Angeles

Big Cities Kids

Share the post "Original Ghostbusters Filming Locations in New York and Los Angeles"

Sometimes we take a break from our typical outdoor hiking and nature camping vacations to take a theme based road trip based on film locations from our favorite movies! We’ve seen film location attractions from Twilight, Goonies, Jurassic Park, Somewhere in Time and more! So grab some popcorn, pop in a marathon of the Ghostbusters movies, and head out to see these famous Ghostbusters filming locations in the USA! Shop Ghostbusters gear on Etsy!

Original Ghostbusters Filming Locations in New York and Los Angeles

Filming for the original Ghostbusters movie actually started in 1983 and was released the next year making an iconic splash for decades! They were on a serious time constraint. The filming was filmed in split locations and was filmed both in New York City (4 weeks) and in Los Angeles (9 weeks). Below you can find a map, Ghostbusters filming locations, tips and more to relive one of your favorite films from the past! PLUS other great places to see in the nearby area!

The inspiration behind the original Ghostbusters film:

After all these years I never know about the inspiration behind the original Ghostbusters film! Dan Aykroyd drew his inspiration for Ghostbusters from his family legacy – no really! Aykroyd’s great-grandfather was a famous spiritualist and psychic investigator, his grandfather investigated contacting the dead via radio technology using a high-vibration crystal radio, his mother claimed to have seen a ghost and his father had an extensive library of research on the history of ghosts. It was literally in his family DNA! Aykroyd loved the idea of modernizing comedic ghost films similar to Abbott and Costello and Bob Hope.

DID YOU KNOW??? – Our favorite famous ghost Slimer actually didn’t receive that name until after the film came out. The green slimy ghost was referred to as “Onion Head” while filming!

Ghostbusters filming locations in new york city, new york:.

Some of the most iconic Ghostbusters filming locations were taken in New York City, New York. But several of the iconic locations were only filmed from the exterior of the building in New York City and filmed in Los Angeles for the interior shots. While you’re in New York check out these things to do in New York !

Map of the Original Ghostbusters Filming Locations in NY:

Above is a handy fan-made Ghostbusters tour location map made for New York. Just zoom in and touch a ghost for more information!

Weaver Hall – the Department of Parapsychology:

The journey begins when Stantz, Venkman, Spengler, professors in the department of Parapsychology at Weaver Hall (all fictional of course) were fired. Although Weaver Hall isn’t a real place, the scenes were filmed at Columbia University. You can see the exact locations from the Low Memorial Library at 535 W. 116th St. as well as just outside Havemeyer Hall at 1180 Amsterdam Avenue. Also pass by the Upper Quadrangle of the campus, north of College Walk, between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway on West 114th and West 120th Streets (also seen in Spider-Man!).

The Ghostbusters Loan Office:

Ah yes, the short but vital loan office scene where the Ghostbusters begged for a business loan to get started. This is at the US Manhattan City Bank, opposite of the New York Public Library, at 489 5th Avenue.

 The Famous Firehouse:

The mecca of all ghost busting plans is of course the famous firehouse that the four original ghostbusters – Peter Vankman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Akyroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) – rented and turned into their headquarters. The movie only used the exterior of the Hook and Ladder 8 (a real functioning firehouse!) found at 14 N. Moore St .

In fact the firehouse even sports Ghostbusters branding and signed posters welcoming visitors when possible. The interior scenes of the Ghostbusters headquarters was actually filmed in Los Angeles (see below) as the Hook and Ladder 8 was too active in their real work!

The Haunted Library:

The haunted library is another popular spot in the film which had split filming locations in both New York and Los Angeles. The exterior of the New York Public Library – Main Branch (also used in Spider-Man!) can be found on 5th Avenue at 42nd Street . ( the interior library scenes was filmed in LA – see below )

Dana’s Apartment:

And who can forget Dana’s apartment? Central mecca to all sorts of weirdness! You can see a portion of the apartment building at 55 Central Park West but the top of the apartment building (you didn’t really think they blew up an apartment building did you?), also referenced in the film as The Shandor, was created separately.

New York City skyline at sunset

Other NYC Filming Locations for the original Ghostbusters movie:

 1. The jail scene when the Ghostbusters team was arrested for unlicensed waste control – 240 Center Street (pst – it’s really haunted!)

 2. The Tavern on the Green restaurant where Louis Tully (aka Rick Moranis) pounds on the window to escape a ravening hellhound – Central Park West at 67th Street

 3. The church that Marshmallow Man steps on – Holy Trinity Lutheran Church next to 55 Central Park West

 4. The fountain (outside the Lincoln Centre) where Peter Venkman tells Dana about Zuul, organizes a date and meets “The Stiff” – 140 W. 65th St, New York City, Upper West Side, Manhattan

 5. The Rockefeller Center

Ghostbusters Filming Locations in Los Angeles, California:

Several of the famous Ghostbusters film spots were filmed in BOTH New York City and Los Angeles! You’ll notice the firehouse and library exterior scenes were in NYC and the interior scenes were shot in LA. While you’re in California check out these things to do in California !

The Famous Firehouse:

While the exterior of the firehouse used in the Ghostbusters film will go down in history, all of the cool stuff happened inside at the  Firestation No. 23 located at 225 East Fifth Street , LA . These interior fire house shots were created in an abandoned firehouse which worked a lot better than trying to shoot film scenes around an active working fire station!

The haunted library basement (interior film shots) are at the Los Angeles Central Library at 630 West 5th Street at Hope Street .

The Haunted Hotel:

Perhaps most widely recognized in the original Ghostbusters film is the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles at 506 S. Grand Avenue . It was known as the Sedgewick Hotel in the film, however, and was where we first see Slimer!

Not seen but referenced:

Not seen in the film but referenced is Camp Wokanda when Ray talked about roasting Stay-Puft marshmallows at camp. There is a REAL Camp Wokanda and it’s located at 1125 W. Lake Avenue in Peoria, Illinois.

Before slimer had a name given to him by fans of the film, he was referred to as onion head., slimer was created in the film by spray painting a peanut green and “flying” around the scenes. , when stay puft “exploded”, instead of marshmallow raining down on the crowd it is actually shaving cream, there was only one ectomobile created and it actually broke down at the end of filming., the ecto-1 was a 1959 cadillac miller-meteor ambulance retro-fitted with ghost-catching gadgets., sound designer richard beggs used a modified leopard snarl for the siren sound on ecto-1. the snarl was reversed, played backwards, and then its speed was changed., in deleted scenes the ecto-1 actually had supernatural powers and made a parking ticket “disappear”., the popular “proton packs” were inspired by military issued flamethrowers., john belushi (the original choice for the actor venkman before his death) was the inspiration that aykroyd used to create slimer., amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit0"; amzn_assoc_search_bar = "true"; amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "explorationamerica-20"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "us"; amzn_assoc_title = "my amazon picks"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "53cb0ba7a8690c302d3c4d62237b1c02"; amzn_assoc_asins = "0918432685,b00zf09vly,b07np5f2n6,b07s3bhxqn,b07s1z24wy,b07kf2xg84,b00jrcb3hq,b01dn0cleg";  .
