Five Performance Cruisers for 2020

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: May 28, 2020

The 2020 Boat of the Year fleet was diverse and intriguing, but with five very cool new models ranging from 31 to 35 feet, no single class was as large or competitive as the Performance Cruisers. In this size range, even for boats whose purpose tilts more toward the racecourse side of the racer-cruiser equation, it’s not enough to design a boat stripped and laid out for speed alone. No, nowadays, basic creature comforts and reasonable accommodations are not only desirable, they’re mandatory, and nearly every boat in this category will not only be a blast to spin around the buoys, but they’ll all also provide an intrepid crew with everything necessary—decent berths, a serviceable galley, a private head—to get away for a week or two of adventurous cruising (the awesome sailing is a given). So, without further ado, here were the nominees for the Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. If you love the pure and simple act of sailing, each of these pocket rockets will provide one sweet ride.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Of the five boats in this collection, the 31-foot-3-inch Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 was the compact yacht best-equipped and spec’d out as a dedicated cruising boat, and not coincidentally, it was also awarded the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don’t let her cozy interior accommodations fool you; this is also one peppy little vessel.

One of the major appeals to the judging panel was the 30.1’s versatility. There are four different keel options, or a centerboard. The deck-stepped mast can be equipped with a tabernacle for easy lowering and trailering to a new locale, or for transiting canals. At $160,000, it was also the least-expensive offering in the category. The plusses just kept adding up.

The rig is a single-spreader fractional number with a square-top main, which maximizes power aloft in the sail plan. Our test boat had an overlapping genoa (with adjustable sheet leads) and an optional bowsprit; the standard version has a self-tacking 100 percent headsail. Twin wheels make handling simple, but for old-school dudes (like me), you can also get a tiller. That’s right, a tiller! The transom is complete with a little fold-down boarding step, along with a boarding ladder. At the opposite end, a Facnor headsail furler is stationed beside the Lewmar windlass. The overall attention to detail is terrific.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

The Beneteau representative who presented the yacht to our judges said that the goal down below was “to fit a bigger boat in a smaller hull, to install a 35-foot interior in a 30-foot boat.” It was certainly an ambitious plan, and one that was largely successful. The V-berth forward is certainly impressive, and that aforementioned deck-stepped spar really opened up the space below, particularly the central saloon and dining area. At the foot of the companionway, the complete galley is to port and the enclosed head to starboard, which is also the locale of a functional little navigation desk. A good-size aft double cabin is also to starboard. For a small family, or a pair of couples, this is a perfectly fine arrangement.

Thanks to the coachroof windows and overhead hatches, there’s plenty of natural light below deck, which is augmented by efficient LED lighting throughout. The bold hull graphics are certainly attention-getters, and the well-executed dodger a perfect place to get out of the weather. Our sail test was conducted in a decent Chesapeake Bay blow, touching 20 knots, and the boat was nimble and responsive. All in all, it’s an impressive package—not to mention, a winning one. beneteau.com ; 410-890-0270

Grand Soleil 34

Grand Soleil 34

Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

These days, there are a couple of major rating rules under which racing yachts compete, and a growing movement of doublehanded classes in many major regattas. And, of course, conditions vary wildly depending on where one sails. Grand Soleil has taken all this into account by offering numerous keel, rig and deck packages, so owners can optimize their boat for their particular region or events.

The shallower of the two keel options draws under 6 feet and is fitted with a lead bulb, which is also the recommended cruising configuration; a deeper 7-foot-2-inch foil is also available. There are three rig choices: a standard aluminum stick or a choice of two different carbon spars. Our test boat had twin rudders and wheels, but a single rudder with a tiller can also be had. The optional 30 hp diesel with sail drive was the power plant on our version; a 20 hp auxiliary is standard. See what I mean about optimization?

Grand Soleil 34 interior

Whichever performance package you opt for, the accommodations remain mostly the same. But even then, you have choices. For instance, the open layout, in cruising mode, has a roomy double berth in the bow; but you can remove the cushions and their base when racing to convert the space into vast sail stowage. Likewise, much of the oak furniture and floorboards can be replaced with composite materials, or even carbon, for competitive sailors mindful of keeping weight at an absolute minimum.

Either way, a drop-leaf table in the center of the boat is flanked by a pair of settees, and there’s a spacious double cabin aft, to port, while the opposing starboard side includes a roomy head through which you can access a large storage area under the cockpit seat. For cruising applications, there’s storage galore.

We sailed the boat in light air, unfortunately, so we did not have the opportunity to put the boat through its paces properly. There’s no doubt, however, that she’ll haul the mail. mareblu.net ; 619-840-3728

Italia 9.98

Italia 9.98

Of the five boats that comprised the Performance Cruiser class, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

Both models share the same interior layout, and for cruising, the quarters are especially inviting and contemporary. The large double-berth forward is accessed by a large cutaway bulkhead trimmed in teak that doubles as a ring frame, and practically begs you to crawl in and kick way back. Two large, central settees flank the drop-leaf table that’s intersected by the keel-stepped spar.

Both the galley, to port, and the navigation station, to starboard, are most pleasant surprises: The former has a big fridge and gimballed, two-burner stove; the latter is much larger than one would expect on a boat of this size. Engaging details abound, including innovative, removable fabric lockers that can be offloaded when in racing mode, and cabin doors framed in aluminum for durability. Aft, there’s a generous double cabin to port, and a smaller double that also incorporates a big head to starboard. Other than sparing teak trim throughout, all furniture and fittings are clean, white composite structures that seem more aeronautical than nautical. Very modern and attractive.

Italia 9.98 interior

Topside, the cockpit is spacious; the short, molded-in bench seats can be lengthened with dedicated storage boxes, which you can leave on the dock when racing and reinstall when cruising. There’s a good-size lazarette locker aft of the beam-width traveler, which in turn is aft of the tiller. The open transom adds to the overall feeling of being on a larger vessel. The double-ended German-style mainsheet is led below deck, contributing to the minimalistic theme; the sheet leads, naturally, are adjustable. The truly outstanding nonskid is molded directly into the deck.

Our test boat was equipped with an optional sprit to fly reaching and off-wind sails. Another iteration of the sprit includes an anchor roller as well; the boat we sailed did not have a windlass, but there’s provision for one. It would be quite easy to convert this boat from racing mode to a solid cruiser. And you’d turn heads in every anchorage. italiayachtsusa.com ; 410-279-3027

J/99

Beginning with the popular little J/24 way back in 1977, J/Boats has become famous for its steady introduction of terrific racing and cruising boats, almost all of which shared one main characteristic: They sailed like a witch. More than four decades later, having built more than 50 separate, mind-boggling models, the Johnstone family that designs, markets and sells the brand shows no signs of slowing down. Their latest offering, for 2020, was another fast and fun racer/cruiser: the 32-foot-7-inch J/99.

Our sea trials for Boat of the Year, conducted in a stiff 25-knot Chesapeake Bay breeze, was easily one of the most memorable test sails in this edition of the contest. The boat was fast, responsive and a joy to steer, perched on the weather rail with an extension for the tiller. Judge Ralph Naranjo was probably the most impressed of all. “It’s one of the most enjoyable small boats I’ve ever had a chance to sail,” he said.

J/99

Everything about the deck layout is set up for efficient boat handling. The beam-width traveler is aft but readily at hand; optimizing mainsail trim in the lulls and puffs is clearly a priority, and coarse and fine-tuning options on the mainsheet further simplify this task. Halyards and reefing lines are led to a pair of Harken winches on the coachroof. A Harken furler handles the 100 percent jib. The sheet leads, naturally, are adjustable. In past designs, the company was well-known for its retractable bowsprits, but with the J/99, it opted for a fixed sprit that is more robust and can handle the loads imposed by today’s big asymmetric kites and code-zero reachers. The entire point of this exercise is easily attained—not to mention sustained—performance.

The “cruiser” part of the boat’s racer/cruiser calculation is the lesser of the two, but the boat is by no means stripped out. The head is forward, with the forepeak reserved for sail stowage. But there are good sleeping quarters in a pair of doubles aft, as well as the two settees in the main saloon that flank a central table. Nice teak trim lends warm and welcome accents to the nav station and galley, which was rudimentary on our test boat, but which can also be upgraded with a basic propane stove. Sure, this layout is more of a camper than a cruiser, but it’s also more than serviceable for a dauntless crew. When they gather around at the end of the day, it will be more than adequate for spinning yarns about the wonderful sailing they just experienced. jboats.com ; 401-846-8410

Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300

Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300

If there were any doubt about what the 32-foot-9-inch Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300 was designed and built for, it was put to rest by our sister publication, Sailing World —a racing magazine dedicated expressly to the need for speed—when it named the boat its overall Boat of the Year for 2020 . So let’s get that right out of the way: The 3300, pure and simple, is a raceboat. Sure, the interior has the basics to allow its crew to navigate, prepare a hot meal and catch a few winks between watches, but the idea here is to get you there , and as quickly as possible.

The boat is actually optimized for doublehanded races, a growing segment of the competitive scene, especially in France, where the boat was designed and constructed. One of the naval architects on the project was Guilaume Verdier, whose design credits include the remarkable 100-footer, Comanche . There are hollows, or “concaves,” in the bow and stern of the boat to promote planing in certain conditions. Jeanneau clearly pulled out all the stops in creating the 3300.

Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300

The deck-stepped rig—which will allow the boat to be shipped in a container for owners who wish to campaign the boat internationally—is carbon, of course. The list of tweakable features is endless. Both the mainsheet and running backstays are infinitely adjustable, with fine-tuned cascades for each. There are water-ballast tanks to simulate the weight of a full crew lining the windward rail when sailing in shorthanded mode. A three-dimensional jib – lead system provides the ability to dial in exact and precise headsail trimming. When racing, a five- or six-sail inventory will allow the crew to hoist and set the ideal sail combination for whatever the wind speed, sea state or point of sail.

Regarding the layout below, Sailing World editor Dave Reed wrote: “There’s not much glitz below deck, but that’s the point. The 3300 is no crossover cruiser. Inside the bowels of this white vinylester-infused capsule are nothing but rudimentary accommodations: galley, nav station, convertible settees and pipe berths that fold up to add additional crew berths. If distance racing and putting the boat away wet is what you desire, this is the level of interior you’ll come to appreciate.”

As the great designer Bill Lee once said, “A raceboat is like a jock strap you pull on to go racing.” So buckle up and hang on to your hats. And strap in, of course. jeanneau.com ; 443-221-4203

First look: Olympic 32 designed for double-handed racing

  • Rupert Holmes
  • January 7, 2022

It may well be on hold for the time being but the Olympic 32 is an innovative eco-friendly concept for doublehanded racing

offshore racing sailboat

This short-handed one-design offshore race boat is a Finot-Conq design commissioned by the Ultimate Boat Company and aimed at the two-handed offshore class that was originally scheduled for the 2024 Olympics .

The radical scow bow hull is optimised for reaching and running, without regard to rating rules. Yet boats of this style are also now proven to be quick upwind and the polars show upwind VMG equivalent to that of a more conventional raceboat of similar size.

A huge amount of form stability enables the boat to stand up to a powerful sail plan and aft sections are shaped to promote early planing.

Light displacement of only 2,200kg puts this boat at the very high end of the performance spectrum – the Sun Fast 3300 is 3,500kg and even the Figaro 3 is 3,175kg. These factors make the Olympic 32 a boat with a performance profile that to date has only been available to Mini 6.50 and Class 40 sailors.

DANU recyclable composite is specified for the hull, deck, structural bulkheads and keel fin. As a result, it already exceeds World Sailing’s sustainable agenda that requires 90% of the weight of a boat to be recyclable by 2030.

Plans for the boat are on hold, although there’s also a proposal for a 33ft catamaran daysailer. In the meantime, the company is already producing RIBs and offshore workboats using DANU.

Olympic 32 specifications:

LOA: 9.45m 31ft 0in Beam: 3.5m 11ft 6in Draught: 2.5m Displacement: 2,200kg 4,850lb Upwind sail area: 68.6m2 738ft2 Price: TBD Builder: ultimate-boats.com

It’s not surprising that Owen Clarke Design is delving into the world of the medium size IRC and ORC racing sailboats. It is after all the latest rating rule and Fast 40 designs that have steadily increased sail area, reduced displacement and so now come within our sphere of expertise. It’s unlikely any design office in the UK, and few worldwide have completed as much development and testing on hulls and appendages for high performance yachts as OC in the last twenty years. We believe we have something new to offer, a game changing winner. Any one design class yacht cannot have an advantage over a wide range of conditions. It has to have a range in which it performs best. That will always be its disadvantage when it comes up against custom or semi-custom designs optimised for local conditions and/or a particular kind of sailing. This is what is in this offering from OC for those owners who want something different and/or want to be involved in the design and build of their own custom racing yacht.

reinforced our initial impressions that for races such as the Sydney to Hobart, as well as in North West Europe, the Caribbean, including Key West and some other classic regatta locations there was likely to be a strong case for a design optimised around higher mean wind speeds. Higher than those we believe most current designs are targeted at. Conservatively we estimated a target TCC of 1,22 would put us firmly in the ballpark and so we began work on optimising the two best candidates we had developed. As part of these studies the tables above show course time comparisons in different wind speeds for windward/leeward, inshore and Olympic courses, as well as the Fastnet Race for twin and single rudder candidate designs.

In 1988,  Sailing World   magazine created a national one-design regatta series that was an immediate success with its unique concept of racing in larger production boats, unrivaled post-racing social experiences and professional race management. Now named the Helly Hansen  Sailing World Regatta Series, the events are the most popular racing weekends in the United States and encompass more than the larger one-design boats. Embracing popular fleets at each location, fleets now include dinghies, multihulls, and keelboats that all compete under established handicap systems for both buoy and distance races. Sponsors and partners continue to engage and grow the sailing community at regatta socials with race videos, games, food and cocktails for all ages at the host yacht club every day after racing.

All Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series events are supported by premier host yacht clubs in renown sailing venues. At the conclusion of each regatta, one top-finishing team is selected to compete in the overall season championship, held in the British Virgin Islands in October. The Regatta Series is owned and managed by  Sailing World , a  Firecrown Media, Inc . property.

Race Organizers

Serving as the creators and managers of sailing events, race organizers are charged with overseeing the registration process and constructing the Notice of Race (NOR) per the Racing Rules of Sailing. This Notice includes valuable information for all competitors including registration guidelines, safety training requirements, applicable class rules, eligibility requirements, governing rules, a description of the course, rating/handicap certification, and scoring. In all of these areas, the organizers endeavor to serve the interests of their entrants and promote participation. Race Organizers are the primary resource for local sailors.

Rating and Handicap Rules

Developed out of a need to isolate the skill of the crew from the performance of the boat, rating and handicap rules endeavor to assign allowances to “correct” fleet finishing times. To ensure these allowances are assessed fairly, the rating rule developer prescribes a set of rules beyond the Racing Rules of Sailing that specifies the configurations to which these allowances apply. Generally, ratings are either derived directly from empirical analysis of race data and observed performance or generated by sophisticated software packages. Deciding which rule is right for their fleet is a chief consideration of race organizers.

Safety Standards

With safety a paramount concern in offshore racing, a number of different authorities have brought recommendations to the sport. The US Sailing Safety at Sea Committee developed Safety at Sea training programs and Safety Equipment Requirements (SER) to consolidate these opinions. Ultimately, it is up to race organizers to stipulate which guidelines to follow and training standards to mandate.

Beneath offshore wind turbines, researchers grow seafood and seaweed

Researchers are exploring multiple uses for wind farms far out at sea, such as producing fresh seafood. A four-year project that started in 2023 at Scandinavia’s largest wind farm off Denmark’s east coast is showing signs of early success with its first harvest of seaweed 18 months later. (AP video by James Brooks, Produced by David Keyton)

KRIEGERS FLAK OFFSHORE WIND FARM, Denmark (AP) — In a small boat bobbing in the waves between towering offshore wind turbines , researchers in Europe’s Baltic Sea reach into the frigid water and remove long lines stretched between the pylons onto which mussels and seaweed are growing.

It’s part of efforts to explore multiple uses for remote wind parks far out at sea, such as fresh seafood production.

Run by the Swedish state-owned power firm Vattenfall and Denmark’s Aarhus University, the four-year project started in 2023 off the Danish east coast at Scandinavia’s largest wind farm, Kriegers Flak . With its first harvest just 18 months later, it’s already showing signs of early success.

“There’s an increasing competition for space on land and in the sea,” said Aarhus University senior scientist Annette Bruhn, who leads the project. “We can, in one area, produce both fossil-free energy and food for a growing population.”

With a capacity of over 600 megawatts, Kriegers Flak can power up to 600,000 households. Its 72 turbines deliver clean energy to nearby Denmark and Germany to the south.

But researchers saw other potential within the park’s 132 square-kilometer (51 square-mile) area.

The water between its spinning blades has been transformed into an experimental underwater seafood farm.

Four hundred-meter (328-foot) lines spread between the turbines grow seaweed and mussel crops. The seaweed was recently harvested for the first time.

“Seaweed and mussels are low trophic aquaculture crops, which means that they can be produced without the use of fertilizers. They take up nutrients from the sea and produce healthy foods,” Bruhn said.

Recent Aarhus University modeling suggests tons of fresh seafood could be produced annually by utilizing just a tenth of Denmark’s wind park area. Researchers say the benefits could go well beyond food production — mussel and seaweed crops could help improve water quality and capture carbon.

“These are non-fed crops that live from what they take up from the sea, they capture emissions instead of having emissions,” Bruhn said.

Researchers say now is the time to develop guidelines to encourage companies to plan for multiple uses of the ocean as European nations massively ramp up production of clean energy from wind turbines in the North Sea.

In 1991, Denmark became the first country in the world to install a commercial offshore wind park. More than 30 years later, nearly half of the Danish electricity production derives from wind turbines.

Driven to meet climate targets and reduce energy dependence on Russia, nine European countries, including Denmark, last year announced plans to quadruple current production to 120 gigawatts by the end of the decade, and move to 300 gigawatts by 2050.

Vattenfall bioscience expert Tim Wilms said there’s “huge potential.”

“We have so much untapped area within our turbines that is not being used,” he said.

“In some areas, it makes a lot of sense to combine with sustainable food” while in other areas “we might look into offshore solar.”

A growing body of research shows that offshore wind farms can have both positive and negative impacts on local ecosystems.

Offshore projects have been criticized for damage caused to the sea floor during construction, noise pollution and now debunked claims they caused whale deaths .

Meanwhile, the large boulders laid at the base of the turbines to prevent erosion can also act as artificial reefs attracting more marine life and protect from large-scale fishing operations.

Wilms said underwater surveys of older wind farms revealed structures “completely transformed”, overgrown with different species.

Liselotte Hohwy Stokholm, CEO of Danish think tank Ocean Institute, said more “knowledge about multi-use” developments was needed to understand how to combine human activities so that great areas of the ocean could become “strictly protected areas.”

Currently, efforts are on a limited scale, but researchers hope to soon take their knowledge to the extreme conditions of the North Sea, eventually upscaling to commercial food production.

“It’s very vital that we do it now because there’s so many questions we still need to have answered before we can do this in the right way,” said Bruhn.

Rose Cup: Youth match racing champs

Published on June 26th, 2024 by Assoc Editor -->

The 2024 U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship (USYMRC) is set, showcasing the top young sailing talent in the country. This prestigious competition will take place from June 26 to 30, 2024, at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

The USYMRC is an invitational event open to sailors who have reached their 16th birthday but not their 21st birthday during the calendar year in which the event is held. The Championship features world-class coaching and race management and serves as an outstanding training ground for young sailors who are interested in match racing and focused on competing at the next level.

The event will feature teams of four sailors, competing in a round-robin format followed by knockout stages. Races will be held using Sonars, known for their suitability for close and competitive match racing.

Prior to the start of racing, competitors are treated to two days of practice and clinics, with coaching from sailing rules expert, Dave Perry, and match racing icon, Janelle Zarkowsky Martin.

offshore racing sailboat

Participants will be vying not only for the championship title but also for the prestigious Rose Cup, a trophy that symbolizes excellence in youth match racing. The event will follow the Racing Rules of Sailing and the specific Sailing Instructions tailored for this championship.

The winner of the USYMRC will also receive an invitation to the Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship, provided he or she has filed a Request for Invitation (RFI) for the Governor’s Cup by Friday, April 12, 2024. The “GovCup” is the oldest, and arguably the most prestigious, youth match racing event in the world and will be sailed this year for the 57th time at Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California from July 22-27, 2024.

The Rose Cup started as an invitational youth match racing event in 2010. It was founded by members of Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California, and the Newport-Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association (“NBSSA”). US Sailing made the event one of its three match racing championships, and it officially became the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship in 2015.

At each USYMRC, the presentation of the Nick Scandone Sportsmanship Award is always a highlight. This trophy, named for the late US Paralympic Gold Medalist Nick Scandone who, in addition to winning the Gold Medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, was beating both able bodied and physically challenged competitors throughout the last year of his life as he fought ALS. Nick’s persistence against seemingly insurmountable odds provides inspiration to winners of the Scandone Sportsmanship Trophy and to all sailors.

The Rose Cup was named by NBSSA for America’s Cup, Congressional Cup and offshore tactician Andy Rose, for his contributions to youth match racing for the Governor’s and Rose Cups.

Spectators and sailing enthusiasts can look forward to a high-energy competition with tight maneuvers and strategic sailing. The Corinthian Yacht Club, known for its excellent facilities and coastal views in the iconic sailing town of Marblehead, will provide a perfect backdrop for this exciting championship.

“The Corinthian is thrilled to be this year’s Rose Cup host,” shared Joe Fava, Regatta Chair at CYC. “Our club has been leading a movement to bring match racing back to Marblehead and the Rose Cup is part of this effort. Sailors should expect outstanding racing and umpires as the team includes both international race officers and international umpires. As with any event hosted at the Corinthian, competitors should also expect a great program off the water filled with great instruction and most of all FUN!”

Conditions in late June are expected to feature relatively light breezes with temperatures in the high 70’s. While cloud cover and humidity generally increase during the month, sea breezes are possible in the afternoons.

2024 Rose Cup Skippers Connor Bennett (San Francisco, CA) Dylan Sih (Newport Beach, CA) Hamilton Barclay (La Porte, TX) James Pine (Mt Pleasant, SC) Morgan Pinckney (Newport Beach, CA) Pearse Dowd (Marblehead, MA) Peter Busch (San Diego, CA) Siena Nichols (Corona del Mar, CA) Thomas Sitzmann (Severna Park, MD) Tor Svendsen (Ross, CA)

The event will feature a two-day livestream on June 29 – 30 with commentary, provided by Clinton Hayes (Saturday) and Ansgar Jordan (Sunday).
