In 1941 the Schaefer family loaned the boat to the US Navy. She performed coastal security patrols (Corsair Fleet) during WW II. Winning a battle flag for scaring away German U boats off the coast of New England.

US Sailing Awards Hanson Rescue Medal To Black Watch

  • By US Sailing
  • Updated: November 19, 2015

black watch sailboat newport

The US Sailing Safety at Sea Committee has awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medals to a sailboat’s crew for their heroic efforts displayed during the 2014 Newport to Bermuda Race, hosted by the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. The award ceremony and dinner took place at Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, Conn. on Friday, November 13.

On June 22, 2014 in the mid-Atlantic Ocean, the crew of the Taylor 41 Wandrain put out a mayday call. The boat had been taking on water with serious hull damage. Three boats responded to the VHS call; Rocket Science, Black Watch and Dorade . Black Watch ‘s afterguard—John Melvin, navigator Peter Rugg, and the watch captains Jamie Cummiskey and CCA member Lars Forsberg—decided that their larger vessel was best qualified to stand by and escort Wandrian to Bermuda.

“If the boat has to be evacuated and someone else needs to take eight or nine people aboard, we should be there,” Rugg later explained. “This is the stuff that’s important to the sport.”

Black Watch , a custom S&S yawl of 68 feet, made in 1938, dropped out of the race to go to the assistance of Wandrain . When she reached the vessel a plan for short term damage control was transmitted to the crew of Wandrain and implemented. Bill Tucker, following Lars Forsberg’s plan from Black Watch , skillfully put a secondary “dam” in place to hold out the water. The crew cut out the bottom of a bailing bucket, split the remaining bucket in two, secured the two pieces around the rudder post with 4,200 adhesive, finished off the dam with silicone to fill the remaining cracks and holes, and taped it up with Duct tape—and crossed their fingers. The fiberglass tube holding the post could shake so badly that it would crack wide open.

Melvin, skipper of Black Watch , had made the call to drop out of the race and shepherd Wandrain while she made her way to Bermuda. This was a 300-mile-long, three-day assist during which the crew of Black Watch had to slow down and often circle Wandrain as she made way. Experimenting with sail combinations, they settled on a full or reefed mainsail, the mizzen, and a forestay sail that could be trimmed to windward to slow the boat by heaving-to. The crew also employed the abrupt slowing maneuver called the “Crazy Ivan,” made famous by the film The Hunt for Red October. Under motor, Wandrain would vibrate too much to proceed. Under sail the constant side pressure on the bearing helped slow the water entry. The crew had to hand pump the entire way to Bermuda.

For the great seamanship exhibited, and the willingness to shepherd a stricken vessel to safety, US Sailing is proud to award the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal to the crew of Black Watch ; Peter Rugg, Kyle Dufur, Phil McDonough, John Melvin, Jamie Cummiskey, Mark Pennington, Jim Volkwein, Jay Cummiskey, Michael Melvin, Lars Forsberg, Chris Fisher, Jessie Terry, Tom Degremont, Jake Kramer, and Peter Forsberg.

The Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal is awarded to any person who rescues or endeavors to rescue any other person from drowning, shipwreck, or other perils at sea within the territorial waters of the United States, or as part of a sailboat race or voyage that originated or stopped in the U.S. The medal was established in 1990 by friends of the late Mr. Hanson, an ocean-racing sailor from the Chesapeake Bay, with the purpose of recognizing significant accomplishments in seamanship and collecting case studies of rescues for analysis by the Safety at Sea Committee of US Sailing for use in educational and training programs. Any individual or organization may submit a nomination for a Hanson Rescue Medal.

Black Watch 40

  • By Scott Shane
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

At the Newport Beach boat show in California this fall, among the trawlers and cruising yachts of Far Eastern design and construction, a glistening white nugget sat begging for attention. The Australian-built Black Watch 40 sportfisherman held her own within the realm of big boys, with a layout so simple and well thought out that it deceives the mind into thinking something is missing.

In fact, it brings to light some “oh, wow” touches missing on American designs.

The first is the belowdecks stowage, separated from the engine compartment and bilges by bulkheads, beneath the galley sole. This dry, cleanly finished compartment can hold dry stores, rods and reels, tools and more.

Trick number two is a matching pair of tuna tubes flush-mounted in the gunwales on either side of the boat. These units provide a constant flow of water to small fish entered headfirst into the cylinders, keeping the catch alive. East Coast anglers do not cast to free swimming or tailing marlin, but as live-bait techniques for tuna continue to gain in popularity, options like the tuna tubes should become more popular on the circuit.

All deck hardware, including pistons, latches and hinges, is stout. Other amenities are plentiful for acquiring booty for the dual fishboxes. A live bait tank, a transom door, a tackle and prep center, and a freezer are neatly placed in the large cockpit.

The saloon is richly appointed, with quality joinery and spacious accommodations. The head is large, as is the separate stall shower.

Two U-shape counters, one to port and one to starboard, provide a large working area and good stowage in the galley.

If there is one thing to quibble about, at least in comparison with American convertibles, it is the size of the 40’s flying bridge. Visibility is great, but the console is a bit tight and the forward-of-the-console seating many of us have grown accustomed to is missing.

Power for the Hunt-designed hull is a pair of turbocharged 500 hp Yanmars.

After seeing the 40, I am waiting-not too patiently-for the 50-footer soon to become part of the Black Watch line.

The United States Sailing Association has awarded Hanson Rescue Medals to the crew of the yawl Black Watch for assisting a disabled competitor in the 2014 Newport Bermuda Race. The US Sailing announcement cited the crew's "heroic efforts" in escorting the boat for 60 hours and 300 miles to Bermuda. The awards, made on November 13 at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club, Greenwich, Ct., went to: Peter Rugg, Kyle Dufur, Phil McDonough, John Melvin, Jamie Cummiskey, Mark Pennington, Jim Volkwein, Jay Cummiskey, Michael Melvin, Lars Forsberg, Chris Fisher, Jessie Terry, Tom Degremont, Jake Kramer, and Peter Forsberg.

Below is the first account of the incident. It ran here soon after the two boats arrived in Hamilton. The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee recognized Black Watch's achievement by awarding the crew a special Seamanship Medal at the 2014 race's prize-giving ceremony.

By John Rousmaniere and Chris Museler

Hamilton, Bermuda, June 25.  With their big fleets, Newport Bermuda Races usually have a few retirements. This year is no exception, with 10 teams dropping out mostly due to relatively small but nagging gear failures, constraints on the crew’s schedule, or (to quote one competitor) “lack of forward progress.”  But also this year, a threat of  serious damage led to an extraordinary response.

Halfway into the race, the bottom bearing of the rudder broke on the Taylor 41 Wandrian, a Class 3 entry hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and sailed by Bill Tucker and eight other Canadian sailors. Tucker put a secondary “dam” in place to hold out the water.  The crew cut out the bottom of a bailing bucket, split the remaining bucket in two, secured the two pieces around the rudder post with 4200 adhesive, finished off the dam with silicone to fill remaining the cracks and holes—and crossed their fingers. The fiberglass tube holding the post might well shake so badly that it would crack wide open.

Taylor succinctly described the danger after the boat pulled up to the RBYC pier on Wednesday morning: “Our challenge was this: if the rudder post broke, we’d have a 6-inch hole in the bottom of the boat.” All this 300 miles from the nearest shore.

Deciding to continue on to Bermuda and request assistance from another vessel, Tucker made calls over VHF radio at 12:30 p.m. EDT this past Sunday, June 22.  Due to a weak connection, the transmission was not ideal, but his message was heard by Rocket Science, a Class 4 entry owned and sailed by Rick Oricchio.  He then established a radio watch to check in regularly with Wandrian, and got in touch with the race’s Fleet Communications Office. Based in a room in the New York Yacht Club in Newport, and chaired by Newport Bermuda Race Communications Officer Chris McNally, the FCO maintains a continuous 24-hour watch on the race until after the last boat finishes, using radio and  the race tracker.

As the FCO learned of Wandrian’s problems on Sunday afternoon, so did the crews of two other boats less than 5 miles away. They happened to be two classic wooden yachts designed by Sparkman & Stephens:  the 68-foot 1938 yawl Black Watch, commanded by John Melvin; and the 52-foot 1930 yawl Dorade, whose owner and skipper is Matt Brooks.

Black Watch’s afterguard—Melvin, navigator Peter Rugg, and watch captains Lars Forsberg and Jamie Cummiskey—decided that their larger vessel was best qualified to stand by and escort Wandrian to Bermuda. “If the boat has to be evacuated and someone else needs to take eight or nine people aboard, we should be there,” Rugg later explained. “This is the stuff that’s important to the sport.” Added Melvin, “Dorade came over when we came over, and we decided we were the better platform to take people off.” The decision to render all possible assistance to another vessel in difficulty came easily for Melvin, who well understood Wandrian’s situation: “I sailed a little Concordia yawl for a long time and I know what it’s like to have everybody pass you and leave you alone.”

Dorade continued racing while her big cousin began the voyage in her new role as Wandrian’s shadow.  The two crews engaged in hourly radio communications, with regular reports to the race Fleet Communications Office. Meanwhile, Black Watch’s sailors wrestled with an unfamiliar seamanship problem: how to sail slowly enough to shepherd a smaller boat. “In a good breeze, we can easily do 9 knots, even in rough water,” Rugg said after they reached Bermuda. “We spent a lot of time figuring out how to sail near her. We kept putting sails up and taking them down.”

Wandrian.3.CM

Experimenting with sail combinations, they settled on a full or reefed mainsail, the mizzen, and a forestaysail that could be trimmed to windward to slow the boat by heaving-to.  The crew also employed the abrupt slowing maneuver called the “Crazy Ivan,” made famous by the film The Hunt for Red October.  In the frequent calms, the two boats doused headsails and turned on engines. The sight of two such different sailing yachts powering side by side so far out in the ocean befuddled their competitors.

This shepherd-and-sheep relationship continued until the two boats neared St. David’s Head in the early hours of Wednesday and Black Watch sailed across the finish line at 2:22 a.m. Wednesday morning, nearly two and a half days after her crew volunteered for this remarkable assignment.

Later on Wednesday, as Wandrian was being prepared to be hauled out for repairs, Tucker paused to point to Black Watch and declare, “They were our insurance policy.”

Group of five for a sunset sail over Labor Day! We all had a wonderful time sailing with Capt. Green on the Lyra. Our evening greatly exceeded our expectations! Capt. Green focused on providing our group a highly individualized tour of the harbor, making sure to provide just the right blend of excitement and fun. We are all novices on the water but we all felt very safe and comfortable while on board. We left the boat wondering why we don't go sailing more often. This was certainly the highlight of our girls trip to Newport!

This was our first time visiting Newport and sailing is a must! We had a great time with Captain Green on the Lyra. Everything ran really smoothly, the boat is gorgeous, and Captain Green was very friendly and told some great stories. He is very knowledgable and safety was a priority. We would highly recommend this excursion and can't wait to do it again!

Really really nice evening. Never sailed before, not once. Fun, soothing and exciting all at once. Captain Green got us back safe and sound so this wasn't a Gilligan island situation.

Blackwatch 19

Blackwatch 19 is a 18 ′ 6 ″ / 5.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Dave Autry and built by Blue Water Boatworks (USA) between 1979 and 1981.

Drawing of Blackwatch 19

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

This boat has also been called the BLACKWATCH 24 (the over all length including the bowsprit is nearly 24’) Blue Water Boatworks was located in Amarillo TX (USA).
