Johnson Yachts’ History

Taiwan-based shipyard Johnson Yachts, well known for their progressive and distinctive yacht designs, has been building exceptional vessels since 1987. Very much a design led company, Johnson Yachts is partnered with Dixon Yacht Design, who has designed all the vessels produced at the respected shipyard for the almost three decades of its existence. The combination of Dixon Yacht Design’s styling and naval architecture and the exceedingly high quality workmanship from Johnson Yachts has made the company the international success it is today. From the first vessel they produced to their latest endeavor, the forthcoming superyacht Johnson 125, Johnson Yachts has demonstrated a commitment to quality and solid workmanship that has led to their becoming one of Taiwan’s foremost yacht builders and a major player in the mega yacht segment.

The key component of Johnson Yachts’ history of success is the dynamic partnership between Johnson Yachts and Dixon Yacht Design. Johnson Yachts was one of the first companies in the Far East to employ a European designer, a bold move that has paid off handsomely for the shipyard. Dixon Yacht Design got its start 27 years ago, when renowned English naval architect Bill Dixon stepped into the leadership of Angus Primrose Design following the untimely death of Angus. Soon after changing the trading name to Dixon Yacht Design, Dixon’s design team began designing the Mediterranean range of sleek Johnson Motor Cruisers. The synergy between Dixon Yacht Design and Johnson Yachts, born out of a mutual respect for each other’s abilities developed over their many years of working together, has produced a line of exceptional vessels. The result of this close working partnership can be seen in every yacht the shipyard produces, with Dixon’s innovative designs ably brought to life by the renowned skill of Johnson Yachts’ dedicated boat builders and engineers.

One of the landmark yachts produced by Johnson was the Johnson 63, designed in the late 80’s. It was a radically designed boat even by European standards; for a Taiwanese boat building company like Johnson Yachts to have the confidence to build this design was a real turning point for the company as well as a seed change for the whole of the Taiwanese boat industry. Johnson Yachts currently offers a fleet of distinctive Motor Cruisers ranging from 65’ to 125’ length. The successful partnership of Johnson Yachts and Dixon Yacht Designs, which so ably blends European design and Far East build quality, is on track to continue for years to come.

Johnson 80 Yacht Launched in Taiwan

The designer and builder of sportyachts and super yachts, Johnson Yachts has announced the launch of its ninth 24.1-metre Johnson 80 motor yacht in Taiwan. The  luxury yachts builder describes the new 80-footer as an entry-level superyacht, chiefly because the Taiwan yard offers this model with the same high level of interior customization that has helped make the Johnson Yachts name over the last 30 years. With a focus on building yachts with excellent interior volume, Johnson Yachts set apart this latest Johnson 80 with a striking interior design by Karen Lynn Interior Design, said a statement from the company. “The latest addition to the Johnson Yachts fleet is sure to impress yachting enthusiasts the world over,” said Andy Huang, president of Johnson Yachts. “Combining our proven engineering with the fashionable comforts of Karen Lynn Interior Design will make for an unbeatable result. And the flexibility of the design will appeal to each owner in ways that production builds just can’t match.” The new Johnson 80 has completed a sea trial and the yacht had a cruising speed of 19 knotsand a top speed of 27 knots, with the expected seakeeping and handling Johnson Yachts considers a hallmark of its line. The Johnson 80 has a 20-foot, 8-inch (6.30-meter) beam that carries well forward, helping to create the interior volume that wins over owners who have seen other yachts in the market that don’t measure up. "While Johnson Yachts has designs in place for multiple layouts, the owner of each hull is encouraged, to create their own one-of-a-kind yacht. And the interior volume that allows true flexibility means the Johnson 80 competes with superyachts longer than 100 feet LOA," said the release. Regardless of how the interior is laid out, each Johnson 80 will benefit from the exterior lines of Bill Dixon at Dixon Yacht Design, it said.

Johnson Yachts has announced the launch of its new ‘entry-level’ luxury yacht, the JOHNSON 80 , at its shipyard in Taiwan. Known for offering a high level of customisation throughout the Johnson Yachts fleet, the latest model is no different and boasts high-quality interiors from Karen Lynn Interior Design in addition to an exterior from Bill Dixon of Bill Dixon Yacht Design.

Another trademark of the shipyard is to maximise interior space as much as possible for guests and this has resulted in four guest cabins on board the 24m/80ft vessel. The VIP stateroom receives excellent natural lighting with the shipyard’s signature bank of vertical windows.

Guests and visitors can gather in the main deck aft salon, designed to be equally suited to hosting a special occasion as casual holidays with family and friends. There is an L-shaped sofa an a pair of armchairs and ottomans to create one cosy social space surrounded by art from the Owners’ collection along the bulkheads.

A glass multi-panelled sliding door leads out onto the main deck aft and allows for perfect flow between the two areas. Forward, the main deck hosts a country kitchen, where the open galley is fitted with a breakfast bar, and marble counter-tops and back-splashes that harmonise with the stainless steel appliances. As guests enjoy a meal at the L-shaped dinette, they have 180 views through the forward windows.

Having just completed her sea trials, she is reported to have performed perfectly, with her twin MAN 1,550 HP engines producing a top speed of 27 knots and a fast cruising speed of 19 knots.

China Says It Monitored, Warned US Destroyer in Taiwan Strait

BEIJING (Reuters) -China's military said it had monitored and warned a U.S. destroyer as it sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, the latest such traversing of the sensitive waterway to upset Beijing.

China claims sovereignty over democratically governed Taiwan, and says it has jurisdiction over the strait. Taiwan and the United States dispute that, saying the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway

The U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement that the destroyer USS Ralph Johnson made a "routine" transit of the strait in accordance with international law.

China's military described the sailing as "public hype", adding it had sent naval and air forces to monitor and warn the U.S. ship and "deal with it in accordance with the law and regulations".

"Troops in the theatre remain on high alert at all times and will resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability," the Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army said.

Taiwan's defence ministry said the ship sailed in a northerly direction through the strait and that Taiwanese forces had monitored the situation but observed nothing unusual.

U.S. military ships and aircraft transit the narrow strait about once a month.

Taiwan's government rejects China's sovereignty claims and says only the island's people can decide their future.

China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.

TAIPEI: A United States warship sailed through a sensitive waterway separating Taiwan from China on Thursday (Aug 22), the US Navy said, as a way to demonstrate Washington's "commitment to upholding freedom of navigation".

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, and has in recent years upped military pressures by sending in increasing numbers of fighter jets, drones and naval vessels around the island.

Thursday's transit of the 180km Taiwan Strait comes as the US and its allies have increased crossings to reinforce its status as an international waterway, angering Beijing.

The voyage by the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ralph Johnson showed Washington's "commitment to upholding freedom of navigation for all nations as a principle", the US Navy's Seventh Fleet said in a statement on Thursday.

"No member of the international community should be intimidated or coerced into giving up their rights and freedoms."

Taiwan's defence ministry confirmed that the warship sailed south to north, and that "no anomaly was detected in our surroundings".

Beijing's People's Liberation Army dismissed the transit as "a public hype" and said its Eastern Theatre Command "organised naval and air forces to tail and stand guard against the US ship's passage throughout the entire process".

Chinese troops "are on constant high alert to resolutely defend national sovereignty," it said in a statement.

Beijing has said it would never renounce the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in recent years upping the rhetoric of "unification" being "inevitable" .

In response, Taiwan has strengthened economic and political ties with its partners - most notably the US, its biggest weapons provider - while increasing its defence budget.

On Thursday, the island's cabinet approved a record-high defence budget of NT$647 billion (US$20.2 billion) for next year, an increase of 6 per cent compared to 2024.

President Lai Ching-te said this month that the budget reflected Taiwan's "determination to improve our self-defense capabilities ... to ensure peace and prosperity".

The amount would still need to be scrutinised and approved by Taiwan's fractious parliament, where Lai's Democratic Progressive Party no longer holds a majority.

1. H istorical center of Yaroslavl

Church of Elijah the Prophet

Yaroslavl is located at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl rivers. This is the capital of the region (and the unofficial capital of the ‘Golden Ring’ tourist route) and a beautiful city with a thousand-year-long history; some of its landmarks are depicted on the 1,000-ruble bill.

The city is, at the same time, very modern – with bars and restaurants to satisfy every taste; that said, it is saturated with history and a rich cultural heritage. So, you can stay awhile and spend quite some time visiting attractions and churches… (don’t miss the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve and the 17th-century Church of Elijah the Prophet!). Even if you don’t like to go to museums, we still recommend you to visit the ‘Golden Ring’ show market, where you can see the main attractions of all the ‘Golden Ring’ cities in one room – well, a miniature version of them! It’s not simply static architecture in miniature, it’s an entire living world. Trains and cars move around, power stations are in operation, you can also hear church bells ring. Night comes every 10 minutes; lights spark up in the cities and in the windows of apartment blocks.

2. Pereslavl-Zalessky

The 12th century Transfiguration Cathedral and the monument to Alexander Nevsky

This is the first city of the region along the way for a tourist en route from Moscow to Yaroslavl. It’s also included in the ‘Golden Ring’. Pereslavl-Zalessky has one of the most ancient surviving churches of Russia – the 1152 (!) Transfiguration Cathedral. Almost every house here has a unique “museum” with its own theme, from vintage irons to gramophone records.

One of the most unusual ones hides in the forests not far from the city – the Pereslavl Railway Museum under the open sky. Examples of different locomotives and coaches since the beginning of the 20th century are collected there. You can also have a ride on a real draisine (a light auxiliary rail vehicle).

3. Lake Pleshcheyevo

Lake Pleshcheyevo and the Church of the Forty Martyrs

Pereslavl-Zalessky stands on the shore of quite a large body of water. This lake is famous for the fact that Peter the Great trained his amusement fleet there. A museum stands on the shore, where the small boat ‘Fortuna’ is exhibited, built by Peter the Great himself, according to legend.

Near Lake Pleshcheyevo lies an ancient artifact of pagan Russia – the sacred ‘Blue Stone’. This is a giant boulder (estimates say it weighs around 12 tons) that changes its color to blue after rain. The locals worshiped the stone in pre-Christian times, but even after accepting Christianity, the stone was attributed mystical properties (it was supposed that the stone possessed dark powers).

Pleshcheyevo is a paradise for eco-tourists; there are a lot of rare birds and animals that livee there, surrounded by a forest and picturesque places. You can stop at one of the recreation bases or pitch a tent and enjoy the view, ride a boat or SUP-boards. There’s also a kiteboarding school; also, during summer, hot air balloon festivals are often held.

4. The Rostov Kremlin

The next city along the way is Rostov Veliky (don’t mistake it for the southern Rostov-on-Don). Its main attraction is its unbelievably beautiful white-stone kremlin of. It was also captured in popular culture: many scenes of the iconic comedy movie ‘Ivan Vasilievich: Back to the Future’ were shot there.

The kremlin is not a defensive fortification like in other cities. It was built as the residence of Rostov metropolitan Jonas III in 1650-1680. The high walls with embrasures and lookout towers are more of a stylization and a tribute to architectural trends.

Inside, you should definitely enter the ancient Dormition Cathedral, admire the iconostasis and frescoes and take a stroll in its picturesque garden. Try pastries with kvass, medovukha or sbiten in the local refectory.

As a souvenir, you can get a decoration item with Rostov ‘finift’, an old local handicraft that originated in Byzantium, involves a technique known as ‘fire writing’.

5. Uglich – the city where history was made

This small town on a picturesque shore of the Volga River is famous across Russia. Not for its ancient churches or its nature, but as the place where Tsarevich Dmitry was killed, which ended the Rurikid dynasty and paved the way for the ‘Time of Troubles’.

The main attractions are concentrated in the kremlin, with a bunch of souvenir stores and a new embankment with trendy cafes.

Visit the chambers of Uglich princes of the 15th century, as well as the Church of Dmitry on Spilled Blood, built on the place where the tsarevich was killed – it has fantastic paintings inside.

6. The city of mice

Cruise ships cruising along the Volga River always stop in the city called Myshkin. It is, probably, the most lovely (and cutest) town in the entire region, a small center which has preserved the spirit of Russian antiquity.

‘Mysh’ is Russian for ‘Mouse’, so Myshkin literally means the ‘Mouse City’. Thanks to its name, the city made the mouse its mascot. And now mice (no, not the real ones!) are all over the place – there’s a special museum dedicated to mice, while there are souvenirs wherever you go: mice of the most diverse varieties!

It’s considered a blessing to buy a small clay mouse and put it in your wallet – the locals believe it will attract money. The square, where the Volga River liners dock, offers a dozen types of smoked fish. A marvelous view of the Volga River, meanwhile, opens from the bell tower of St. Nicholas’ Cathedral.

7. Rybinsk – a retro-style city

Rybinsk is yet another city on the shore of the Volga River. There, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of rich merchant life – the city was once a true trade center, which also dealt in fish. The Nobel Brothers Museum, who developed the oil industry in the city and on the Volga River, can also be found there.

It’s pure joy to have a stroll in Rybinsk, for, today, the main aspect of the city is that all the signs in the center are made in the retro merchant style. Even modern banks and stores attract visitors with their seemingly pre-revolution signs. Also, Rybinsk has a beautiful and very long embankment and even its own Red Square, which, despite the Lenin monument, is very reminiscent of a typical square somewhere in Europe.

8. The most beautiful village in Russia

The village of Vyatskoye

The village of Vyatskoye 40 kilometers from Yaroslavl is considered one of the most beautiful in Russia (at least, according to the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of Russia’ Association). In recent years, it has become a true Mecca for tourists. Its center was restored in the Art Nouveau style of the beginning of the 20th century, right down to stone pavements and vintage buildings.

There are museums to satisfy every taste (including the Museum of Russian Entrepreneurial Spirit), stores with souvenirs and local delicacies, sweets, and liqueurs, as well as a multitude of cafes.
