Bluewater Sailboat – Taswell 43

The Taswell 43 is a large Bluewater sailboat constructed in the late 1980s by British nautical architect Bill Dixon. Ta Shing Yacht Building in Taiwan constructs by the Taswell 43. These are intermediate-performance cruisers, possibly on par with a Valiant in terms of speed and pointing capabilities.

This Taswell is distinguished by its big owner’s cabin with an ensuite bathroom, enormous galley, and airy salon with wonderful views outdoors. This Bluewater yacht has two cabins with bunk beds and a second bathroom in the bow. When compared to similar sailboats, this ratio is more comfortable than 12% of all similar sailboat designs. A substantially lower than normal level of comfort.

Taswell 43

  • LOA:  13.05m/ 42.81 ft.
  • LWL:  11.66m/ 38.25 ft.
  • Beam:  5.08m/ 16.67 ft.
  • Draft:  1.91 – 2.01 m/ 6.27 – 6.57 ft.
  • Displacement Length Ratio (D/L): 187
  • Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR): 21.5
  • Length Beam Ratio (L/B): 2.57
  • Engine: 55.0 hp (40 kW)
  • Fuel Tank: 326 liters (86 US gallons)

The interior configuration of the TASWELL 43 is ideal for coastal sailing or living aboard. These boats come with a variety of interior arrangement options. It has a better configuration for offshore work than subsequent models, which are completely unsuitable. While the early design was not suitable for offshore conditions, it could be modified to perform rather well when compared to many contemporary designs.

However, as with many, if not most, center cockpit boats of that size, there is a very efficient use of space down below for livability, but this comes at the expense of the necessary scarcity of bulk storage for large items such as light and heavy air sails, fenders, spare anchors, life rafts, bulk food stores, and so on. Because of the absence of bulk storage, these vessels are less than suitable for long-distance offshore sailing.

The TASWELL 43 is a high-performance cruising yacht with a center cockpit, sloop rig, and fin keel. She has an aft owners suite with an island berth and a private head with a stall shower, as well as a forward stateroom with a private head and stall shower. A nearly circular dinette to the port and a forward-facing navigation station to the starboard side, together with a U-shaped galley.

Quick Notes

This sailboat design is heavier and more spacy than 99.9% of all other designs. The designer appears to have chosen a substantially more spacy hull design. The ballast ratio indicates a righting moment that is slightly above average (ability to withstand heeling). It’s helpful to know how much anti-fouling bottom paint to purchase.

The structural deck is the sub-deck, and it cannot be inspected, making the teak decks unsuitable for a long-distance offshore cruiser.

The wet bottom has a surface area of approximately 61m2 (656 ft2). Based on this, your favorite seafaring store can estimate the quantity you require. When using a paint roller, you will need more paint than when using a paintbrush.

Now you can also precisely calculate the expenses related to boat ownership to make smart choices based on your budget and sailing needs. Use this bluewater Sailboat Calculator to explore different options and make the best decision.

Review of Taswell 43

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 727.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The Taswell 43 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.91 - 2.01 meter (6.27 - 6.57 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Taswell 43 is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 4JH-HTE diesel engine at 55 hp (40 kW). Calculated max speed is about 7.0 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 326.0 liters (86 US gallons, 71 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Taswell 43 is 2.33, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Taswell 43 is about 396 kg/cm, alternatively 2222 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 396 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 2222 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 61m 2 (656 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Life aboard a Taswell This is an exceptional cutter rigged sailboat. There are many systems to maintain. Nothing is without purpose or function. Within the blog pages we'll keep this Taswell 43 afloat and looking good! Visit and see what project we are working on. CaptCam

Trevor - SailboatOwners.c

Thanks CaptCam Thanks for sharing your blog! I own TW43#26 and am in the process of outfitting for an eventual extensive cruise. There is some good info at another owner's site (www.taswell43.com), as well as the out of date www.rainsong.net. I hope to get a something online detailing my upgrades one of these days. I look forward to "meeting" other Taswell owners! Best, Trevor S/V Lea Scotia 1989 Taswell 43 #26 Seattle, WA

Thankyou Trevor Looking forward to hearing yabout your projects. You might check Isle of Sail (isleofsail.org) for some other usefull info. You might like to post some of your stories there. Yes, I saw "Ricka" pages. Interesting, but seems he did not spend enough time out there, IMHO if course. CaptCam

Nice Blog...gotta a question.. I'm a new owner of a Taswell 43..Hull 41..s/v RedJack, presently berthed in Grand Bahama. Question is, how did you remove the original bilge pump? It's a long way down there.

Bilge Pump Blues Hi Dwane - Congratulations on the boat! Regarding the bilge pump, I am having the same problem. You should see a stainless bar mounted in the front of the engine compartment which extends down into the depth of the bilge under the engine - the bilge pump "should" be attached to it. I say should, because I mine wasn't. I pulled up the bar and nothing was there. I can just barely see the bilge pump down there but haven't managed to get it pulled up so I can replace it - it stopped working! I suppose I'll just have to shrink and squeeze down there to get it - I've tried a boathook but it doesn't move much with the hose attached. If anyone has any other ideas, please share! Weldome

I''m thinking about purchasing a Taswell 43 and would like to get owner/crew feedback. How would you rate the Taswell 43''s sailing ability? Slow and kindly with fair upwind performance or is she more performance oriented with good upwind abilities? Other than leaky windows are there other issues or problems with these boats? How would you rate the overall design, deck layout, cabin layout? Would you recommend the boat for extended blue water cruising? Thanks in advance

sailboat data taswell 43

We have done a fair amount of cruising with an early Taswell 43 (before the model name change). These are moderate performance cruisers, perhaps on a par with a Valiant speed and pointing ability wise. I would not say that they are especially ''kindly''. They have a wonderful interior layout for coastal cruising or for living aboard. There are several interior layouts available for these boats. The one that I knew best had a better layout for offshore work than a later models that I had seen which were totally unsuitable for offshore work. The early layout while less than ideal for offshore conditions could be made to work reasonably well at least compared to many newer designs. That said, like many, if not most center cockpit boats of that size, there is a very efficient use of space down below for livability but that comes at the price of the necessary shortage for the kind of bulk storage for large items like light and heavy air sails, fenders, spare anchors, life rafts, bulk food stores, etc. That lack of bulk storage makes these boats less than ideal for long distance offshore cruising. The deck layout works pretty well except that the cockpit is quite cramped and pretty high vertically. While a small cockpit is good for offshore safety, it is small for hanging out and socializing. Its high position gives it a quicker, larger rolling motion in a seaway. These boats are generally well constructed. That said, in a general sense, I would never recommend an oriental teak-decked boat for extended blue water cruising. Beyond the need for considerably higher maintenance and the sheer heat underfoot in the tropics, is the short lifespan of this construction. Depending on climate and use, eventually, 15 to 25 years into the life of the boat the decks need replacement. This is a massive job, and in the case of oriental built boats, the teak decks are layed over plywood and screw fastened. With that construction, at some point before the decks are replaced, there is likely to be significant rot in the plywood sub-deck. Since the sub-deck is the structural deck and it can''t be inspected, I consider the teak decks to be a deal-killer when talking about an long distance offshore cruiser. Jeff

Boat: Taswell 43
getaway in 3-4 years.

We are interested in connecting with other Taswell owners to share information on and refits.

Two questions:

1) Has anyone had trouble with the original in the ? Are they strong enough ? Has anyone found a suitable replacement portlight? I spoke with New Found Metals, who make great stuff, by they have no replacement that would be a good fit.

2) Has anyone dealt with damage on bulkheads that connect to the floor- intersection? Ours are showing here, and I suspect it is due to from cold being transmitted through the floor/bulkhead joint.

Any or thoughts would be welcome. Thanks!

of a well-maintained 1989 Taswell 43. I'd love to know all the good and bad of these . My understanding is that they are basically a variation on the Bob Perry Norseman 447 that the same yard made and on their own. The looks wonderful. From what I've seen, the seems a little tight (lots of standing along the side decks that may not be great for ease of movement at sea). Curious about owner experiences, how they sail, what works and what doesn't, known areas of concern, etc.

Taswell 43 RS

Taswell 43 RS is a 42 ′ 9 ″ / 13.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Bill Dixon and built by Ta Shing Yacht Building Ltd. starting in 1990.

Drawing of Taswell 43 RS

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

RS=Raised Salon. Shoal draft: 5.25’
