Sailing from Venice to Croatia

Our article gives you an overview of the following topics:

  • Important facts when sailing by a catamaran Venice to Croatia

Ports in route from Venice to Croatia

Catamaran tours from venice to croatia, 1-week sailing from venice to croatia, 2-week one-way trip from venice to dubrovnik croatia, marine gas near venice, boat gas stations in route from venice to croatia, important facts when sailing by a catamaran from venice to croatia, weather on the northern part of the adriatic sea.

The summer begins in May on the Mediterranean Adriatic Sea. At this time, the average temperature is above 20 degrees. I believe, just brave ones jump into the 19-degree cold water. The hottest period is in July and August with an average temperature of over 30 degrees. So, you can take a pleasant swim in-the 24-degree sea, you won’t feel it cold. There are variable winds on the Adriatic Sea: the bora blows from north-northeast in spring and autumn whereas the southern Jugo brings warm spells. You can expect more rain accompanied by storms in the northern part that could impede your sailing. Check the sailing conditions and wind rose diagram of Croatia or sailing conditions and wind rose diagram of Italy

What costs to count with?

As Italy, Slovenia and Croatia are all EU-member states, you should exchange Euro. The official currency of Italy and Slovenia is Euro, in Croatia kuna is used. However, a few catering facilities accept the Euro, it is better to bring with you kuna as well. Therefore, upon your arrival in Croatia, exchange your Euro to kuna in a local bank or money exchange office. It is good to know that the Adriatic Italian ports are much more expensive in the peak season than any other ports in the region. The mooring costs vary between 90-180 Euros. This can be lower, 60-130 Euros, in the low seasons. By sailing with a catamaran, you should multiply the above prices with 1.5 times.

What to see in Venice?

Sailing in Venice

One-way or round trip?

It depends a lot how far you would like to sail. During a one-way trip, you can visit Croatia’s coastline and islands. So if you want to take this challenge, it can last 2-3 weeks depending on the number of destinations. After handing over your yacht, you can get to Venice by bus, ferry or train. The route can vary from each Croatian town, in many cases, there are more stops needed to get back to the city. Therefore, always consider travelling facilities during the planning phase. Besides, it is easier to choose the direct flights from Split and Dubrovnik to Venice. By our longer cruise, you need to hand over your yacht in Dubrovnik. Although by visiting the towns of the Istrian Peninsula, we recommend the shorter round sailing cruise. The only obstacle could be the Meltemi wind blowing against you in the summer.

Travelling from Venice to Croatia

Travelling from Venice to Italy

Travelling from Venice to Croatia is relatively straightforward because there are a number of ways of doing so – namely, catamaran, bus or flying! There are several flights from Venice to airports in Croatia (Split and Dubrovnik); with short flight times, it’s a relatively easy hop down to Dalmatia. (However, flights only operate in summer and aren’t daily.)

Another option for travelling from Venice would be to take one of the numerous daily trains from Venice Santa Lucia or Mestre stations to Trieste and then change there for more transportation options to Croatia. See the  Trenitalia  website for train timetables.

Travelling from Venice to Italy

There are many cheap flights from the UK to Venice Marco Polo Airport, operated by various airlines. (There are also cheap flights to Venice Treviso, which is a completely different airport – see how to get from Treviso to Croatia .) So if you can’t find suitable flights direct to Croatia – to Istria in particular – flying to Venice instead and travelling across is very doable.

Travelling from Venice to Istria by catamaran

Venezia Lines  operates routes from Venice to several Istrian ports – Porec , Rovinj , Pula and Rabac . Most services operate between June and September; more popular ones operate from April to October (e.g. Venice to Rovinj and Porec). Book online using the form below:

Travelling from Venice to Pula by Bus

There are several daily services from Venice to Pula –  FILS  and  Brioni  both run services, with the second company having a route that starts in Padua and stops in Buje and Rovinj along the way.

Crnja Tours also operates daily services from Venice to Pula as well – again, this route starts actually in Padua. The bus stops in Trieste, Koper (Slovenia), Umag , Novigrad , Porec and Rovinj before reaching Pula .

Travelling from Venice to Rijeka by Bus

Flixbus offers bus services on this route with a journey time of around 4 hours. You can find timetables on their website and also use it to purchase tickets.

Some of the Flixbus buses also make stops at Venice and Trieste Airports on the way to Rijeka, and some buses in fact start from further afield in Italy, such as from Florence, Bologna or Milan.

Flights from the UK to Venice Marco Polo

  • British Airways  Flights from London Heathrow and London Gatwick
  • Easyjet  Flights from London Gatwick, Bristol and East Midlands
  • Jet2.com  Flights from Birmingham, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Edinburgh
  • TUI Flights from London Heathrow, London City, Bristol and Manchester

(N.B. Not all of the above flights operate all year round.)

Can I travel from Venice to Split or Dubrovnik by ferry?

It’s a question we get asked quite frequently but, unfortunately, no – there are no ferries from Venice to either Split or Dubrovnik. Aside from the catamaran services to Istria and Mali Losinj (mentioned above), there is no ferry service from Venice to anywhere else in Croatia.

But what if I do want to get from Venice to Split or Dubrovnik? Flying from Venice to Croatia!

By far the easiest way of travelling from Venice to Dubrovnik is by air –  Croatia Airlines  operates this as a twice-weekly service in summer. If you’re utilising this route and want to get to Split, you could then also take a bus (about 4.5 hours) up to Split.

Easyjet flies from Venice to Split three times a week from April to October and to Dubrovnik twice a week in July and August.

Travelling by train

Otherwise, travelling by train isn’t really a suitable option – train services to Split will travel via Zagreb, so this will add on unnecessary hours to your journey. Travelling by train to Dubrovnik isn’t possible at all, of course, as the town has no train station.

You could travel from Venice to Trieste by train, and then take one of the daily buses from here to Split or Dubrovnik. See our guide on how to travel from Trieste to Croatia .

However, the bus journey from Trieste to Split/Dubrovnik is rather long, and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea being cooped in a bus for that long! In our opinion, therefore, the best way of travelling from Venice would be to take a train down the Italian side of the Adriatic, and then take a ferry across to Croatia. You should travel to Ancona for ferry services to Split (or Zadar) or to Bari for services to Dubrovnik.

Check for train schedules on the  Trenitalia  website, and then see our pages on travelling from Ancona  and Bari .

Ferry croatia.

With more than 1200 islands, ferries and catamaran are an essential part of the transportation system in Croatia . In additional to domestic ferries, to the Croatian Island, there is also several ferry and catamaran connections from Italy to Croatia , majority of these lines only operate during summer season.

Why Ferry Croatia?

The ferry and catamaran lines in Croatia are operated by about 15 different companies , the main domestic carrier is the company Jadrolinija , often website refer to this page in relation to ferry schedules, but as mentioned this is just one company out of 15 so you will only find some of the ferry routes and timetables on their page, which is reason why we have made www.ferrycroatia.com , here you find ALL ferry timetable , regardless of carrier.

Buying ferry tickets in Croatia

Although there are a few exceptions, the general rule is that International ferry and catamaran departures can be booked online well ahead, for the domestic car ferry lines is it meanwhile also possible to book and reserve tickets on some routes. Alternative to buying tickets online is to go to the ferry terminal/ticket agent which you will find in each ferry port.

Why is it not possible to buy a ticket for a specific domestic car ferry?

The main reason why you can not buy a ticket for a specific departure online is the infrastructure of the ferry ports (Especially the ones on the islands). During the summer season the ports are often full, and there’s lots of traffic on public roads, which makes it very complicated if not impossible to use any other system than the “ first in” – “first-out” principle .

Ferry timetables – Seasonal ferries Croatia

The majority of the international ferries only sail during the summer season , which is usually lasts from 1st of May to 30 th of September.

Most domestic ferry routes normally (do not apply to all ferry companies) have timetables divided into the following three “seasons ”.

  • Main Season – 1st of July to 31 of August.
  • Pre-and after Season . 1 st of June to – 30 th of June and 1 st of September to 30 th of September.
  • Out of  Season – 1 st of October to 31 st of May the following year.

Under our detailed route descriptions below you will find all information about specific routes.

Ferry connections and schedules

Here are some of the most popular ferry and catamaran routes, click on combinations to see schedule, if you are searching for ferry route not listed here, you can use to search form above to find sailing times:

Ferry to Islands in Croatia

We recommend doing so, especially on the international routes, and routes operated by catamarans that have limited space.

In most cases, you need to buy a ticket either online or at a ticket office. Buying tickets onboard is possible only on a selected boat and catamaran lines.

The full timetable for all ferry, catamaran, and boat lines in Croatia can be found on our site. Use the search form above to find your desired departures.

In the winter months, ferry departures in Croatia are not as frequent as in the summer. This is due to the decrease of tourists going to Croatian islands. However, you can still travel with Croatian ferries in the winter, you will just have to plan your trip more carefully due to the decrease of lines.

If you are traveling on a car ferry, we certainly recommend getting there as early as possible, especially from June – September. If you’re a foot passenger, you can be at the ferry port as late as 10 minutes before departure.

Car ferries can transport both foot passengers and vehicles and are generally much slower than catamarans. Catamarans are designed only for foot passengers.

Yes, they can. If you are a foot passenger traveling on a car ferry in Croatia, you don’t have to worry if there will be enough space on the ferry, as there is plenty of space on car ferries for foot passengers.

If you’re traveling with Jadrolinija and miss your departure, you can use your ferry ticket for any departure on that day. Other catamaran companies have their regulation, and generally, with them, you can use your ticket only for the selected departures.

This of course depends on your financial situation, but generally speaking, ferry tickets are affordable. If you are traveling with your car, expect the prices to be significantly higher, as you need to pay a ferry ticket for your vehicle too.

This depends on the ferry company. Each company has its own rules and regulations, but generally, it is possible to bring your pets and a bike on board (with probable extra fees).  We recommend checking this information before your departure.
