Brokerage: The Tiara 4200 Open

It’s been 16 years since I ran Hull No. 1 of Tiara Yachts’ 4200 Open. Back then I noted that her optional 700 hp Caterpillar C12 diesels provided a 34.6-knot top hop and a 29.5-knot cruise speed.

Notable features: She had a solid fiberglass hull and balsa-cored sides. Twin 535 hp Cummins QSM11s were standard. Electronic controls were optional. Her range was 288 nautical miles at cruise speed.

Belowdecks: The Plan A layout had a forepeak stateroom, and the Plan C layout had a second twin-bunk stateroom abaft and to starboard of the forepeak. All layouts had one head.

 Availability: At press time, 14 of the Tiara 4200 Open were on the market, ranging from $299,995 for a 2003 cruising model to $429,000 for a 2007 boat tricked out to fish.

At 87-square foot the aft-cockpit would be large even for a tournament-ready sportfisher, and this versatile space is perfect both angling and relaxing. Buyers can fit the cockpit out with rod storage, flush rod holders, macerated fish boxes, a freezer, an ice-chipper, a live well, an aluminium floor plate for a fighting chair, fresh and raw water hoses, a bait-prep station, a tackle center and a Glendinning Cable Master if they so please. Alternatively, they can make use of the flip-up transom sofa, pop-up breakfast table and elevated mezzanine sofa to sit back, enjoy a few drinks and listen to the music piped through integrated Bose speakers. A transom door that can be used as a lift-gate leads back to an optional bathing platform at the stern that is perfect for watersports or hoisting your catch aboard. True fishing aficionados will also be pleased to note that this yacht can be fitted with a tuna tower for that extra edge over the competition.

Stepping into the main-deck pilothouse, covered by a fiberglass canopy with skylights, you will discover an L-shaped leather sofa with cup-holders and a port-side wet-bar station with chilled storage, a sink and an electric barbecue grill. Up front there is a Stidd helm seat facing a tilt-back dashboard with Teleflex hydraulic steering, Bennett trim tab controls, twin Raymarine E120 display screens, ICOM VHF radio, a Ritchie compass and an optional DSM fish-finder.

The lower deck is large enough to turn this vessel into a genuine overnight cruiser, and the sedate appeal of this yacht is enhanced by a teak and holly sole, honey ash and satin-toned teak surrounds, plush leather furnishings, oval portholes and mood lighting. There is an open galley with a Sub-Zero fridge-freezer unit, a Black & Decker coffee machine, a Panasonic microwave, a two-zone ceramic hob, Corian counter-tops and a stainless-steel sink alongside an L-shaped sofa and an extending dining table. A bunk berth for two to starboard is joined by a VIP cabin to the bow with a double island bed, a cedar-lined closet and a skylight, while the main head comes with an enclosed shower cubicle.

Buyers can choose between a pair of 700mhp Caterpillar C-12 diesels or twin 525mhp Cummins QSM11S inboard engines, and should be able to reach top speeds of around 35 knots at full-throttle. Cruising speeds clock in at approximately 26 knots and at this pace you can expect a range of 357 nautical miles. A proprietary hull with a shallow keel, fine convex sections forward, reverse chines and a 17.5 degree transom deadrise boasts plenty of stability on the turn and a relatively dry ride at higher speeds.
