You’re bound to have seen photographs of Lefkada’s world-renowned beaches. But when you arrive, you’ll quickly realise that the reality is even better than the fantasy. Lefkada – or Lefkas – is easily accessible, hospitable and lively – a recipe for the perfect summer holiday in the Ionian Sea. Kathisma, Egremni, Porto Katsiki – the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean – have won international acclaim and are awarded annually with Blue Flags (symbolising cleanliness and quality). Windsurfing, kitesurfing, paragliding, scuba diving, flights in a prop plane, horseback riding, mountain biking, sailing the surrounding islets like Skorpios: there is no end to the activities and sports on offer here. You’ll explore the island, stay at luxurious or quaint and traditional hotels, eat at restaurants on the water. The welcoming Lefkada town will invite you to savour its culture: walks in the alleyways, folk songs, the famous bouranelous (anglers), plates of Englouvi lentils on Agios Donatos’ feast day. Immerse yourself in Lefkada’s magical world.

What to do in Lefkada

The most popular beaches in Lefkada Are you ready to plunge into paradise? Here, turquoise meets azure, with white sand, white cliffs and smooth white pebbles. Vast exotic beaches, bays, cliffs that swoop into the sea, pine trees. Kathisma, Egremni, Milos, Pefkoulia, Myli, Ammoglossa. And the island’s number one star, Porto Katsiki. Every swim is soul-cleansing. Every beach is an unforgettable experience.

Set sail to the islets around Lefkada At Nydri, row upon row of masts sway to the rhythm of the wind, ready to cast off. Untie those ropes and set sail in the Ionian’s azure waters for delightful hideaways like Pringiponisa, Meganisi, Kalamos and Kastos. For mariners, Lefkada’s surrounding islands are among the favourite destinations in Greece.

Surfin’ Lefkada Board, boom, sail… and we’re off to windsurf in Vasiliki and Ai Gianni, two of the world’s best beaches for the sport and home to the International Regatta. If you prefer kitesurfing, Myli, near Lefkada town, is ideal. If you’re even more courageous, you can paraglide – an unforgettable flight with an exciting landing at Kathisma, one of Lefkada’s most gorgeous beaches. Or soar through the sky with one of the Aeroclub’s prop planes or light aircrafts.

The legend of Cape Lefkata When you get here, the legendary energy wraps around you. At the spot where a lighthouse now stands, 60m above sea level, sacrifices were made to the gods in ancient times. Which is why the temple of Lefkata Apollona was built here. After the 6th century, sacrifices to the gods were replaced by sacrifices of desperate lovers. The poet Sappho was allegedly the first to jump and the dramatic white cliff is named Sappho’s Leap after her. It has also been called Kavos Tis Kyras (Lady’s Cape), after the love-struck girls who threw themselves to their death here. It is one of the most interesting sights in Lefkada, and well worth a visit.

From the castle of Agia Mavra to Gyra When you enter the town, you’ll be welcomed by the castle. In 1300, the Venetian leader Giovanni Orsini received Lefkada as a dowry and began fortifying it with seven bastions on seven sides. Inside you’ll find the church of Agia Mavra, patron saint of Lefkada, celebrated on May the 3rd with a huge feast day. From the castle to the northwest side of town, there is a thin strip of land, 7 km long, that embraces the Gyras lagoon. The red villa Kalkani, windmills and fishermen’s homes inhabit this unique wetland, along with numerous species of protected birds.

Surprises in the alleyways of Lefkada Like the wind, you will whirl around the town’s alleyways. Stroll along and you’ll discover a series of surprises. In the lively squares and sidewalks, stores and churches, in the 17th and 18th century architecture: impressive steeples, exquisite temples and Ionian icons. Here, you’ll be struck by the coloured sheet-metal facades of the houses’ upper floors. It’s a unique local custom devised to minimise earthquake damage.

Quaint Agios Nikitas Cars are prohibited here, so you’ll explore this traditional settlement on foot. A charming little marina, green everywhere, fish tavernas, cafes and bars on the water, small hotels, stone cottages. From here you can take a caique to nearby, exotic and beautiful Myli.

Hidden gems of Lefkada

The Venetian Olive Grove The shade of 100-year-old olive trees hides a story. The grove, which embraces the western side of town, was planted by order of the Venetians in the 17th century. Here, you’ll enjoy a walk or a bike ride through the immortal olive trees.

Dimosari waterfalls Follow the shady path under the planes, until you reach a unique vision: enormous rocks and water falling with great force into the blue lake. You won’t be able to resist a dip.

Englouvis lentils Small in size but large in flavor. Cooked in large cauldrons by the village women on Agios Donatos’ feast day (August 7) at the plateau above the village. A festival on your plate!

Yacht Charter Lefkada

Lefkada is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea on the west coast of Greece, connected to the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. Lefkada is the sleeper hit of the Ionians. Mountainous and remote in the centre, with gorgeous vistas and forests, the island is lined on its west coast with some of the best beaches in Greece. Holiday resorts tend to cling to the east coast where 10 satellite islets dot the sea.

Lefkada is less insular than most islands; it was once attached to the nearby mainland by a narrow isthmus until occupying Corinthians breached it with a canal in the 8th century BC. A causeway now spans the 25m strait, yet Lefkada remains steadfastly island like in the best of ways. In remote villages older women sport traditional dress and the main town, Lefkada Town, has a refreshing mid-20thcentury appeal.

The island’s bustling main town has a relaxed, happy feel. It is built on a promontory at the southeastern corner of a salty lagoon where earthquakes are a constant threat. The town was devastated by one in 1948, only to be rebuilt in a distinctively quake-proof and attractive style with the upper-storey facades of some buildings in brightly painted corrugated tin. Stroll the vibrant main pedestrian thoroughfare, Dorpfeld, and lively Plateia Agiou Spyridonos or visit the handsome churches.

Lefkada’s east coast has seen heavy tourist development over the years with the main focus at Nydri, once a gorgeously placed fishing village but now a crowded strip of tourist shops without much of a beach. Escape inland, however, to another world of scattered villages and pretty walks. From Nydri itself, you can escape seaward to the islets of Madouri, Sparti, Skorpidi and Skorpios, plus Meganisi.  Amblers enjoy the lovely walk to waterfalls 3km out of Nydri.

Vasiliki has a stony beach but is one of the best windsurfing venues in the Mediterranean. The enormous bay has soft breezes in the morning which are ideal for instructing beginners, and in the afternoon winds whip down flanking mountains for serious aficionados. The winding waterfront, with eucalyptus and canopy-covered eateries, is a pleasant place to relax.

Serious beach bums should head straight for Lefkada’s west coast where the sea lives up to every cliche: it’s an incredible turquoise and the beaches range from arcs of cliff and white stone to broad expanses of uninterrupted sand. The long stretches of Pefkoulia and Kathisma in the north are lovely , as are Megali Petra and Avali, south of Kalamitsi. Or find remote Egremni and breathtaking Porto Katsiki in the south. Explore! You’ll pass local stalls selling olive oil, honey and wine. Word is out about the picturesque town of Agios Nikitas, and people flock here to enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of this holiday village.

After you have decided to meet and experience the beauties of the Ionian Sea and sail its waters, it is essential to know which parts you want to visit. To make your charter sailing holidays more enjoyable and stress-free, we’ve prepared some 7-days and 14-days sailing itineraries in the Ionian from which you can choose. You are free to change the sailing itinerary / route according to the weather predictions and your preferences. In one day it is advisable to go 15 - 25 miles (3 to 6 hours of sailing). Don't forget that you are on holidays and you need to relax and have fun!

Our proposed route is valid only for ideal weather conditions; in severe weather conditions we suggest that you change the route using nautical charts and guides.

A day or two before the end of the charter period, sail as close to base port as possible. Weather conditions may change in the last days, so it's better to be closer to our base.

The 5-6 hour estimate is correct. They cannot possibly do it in 3 hours (no, not even a bus driver!). This website is usually reliable:

If you'd like to spend time on an island without worrying about ferries but would like to be a little closer to Athens, you could look at Evia, which is also linked to the mainland by a bridge.

It is a lengthy ride from Lefkada to Athens and that eats into your available time. When you consider that there's no Greek island more than a 60 minute flight from Athens and some are way closer than that, then you could to a point consider pretty much anywhere for those final few days and still cut the travelling time back to Athens in half, even allowing for check in times.

Bear in mind too that once back in Athens from Lefkada if using the bus, you still then have an further hour's ride to the airport via the X95 bus, or a shorter ride via taxi or Metro.
