Catamaran Gets Cork Deck Outside and Replaces Some Teak/Holly Below

The Catamaran Just a Dream was looking for better footing in the cockpit and the foredeck near the mast, as well as to replace worn non-skid on the transom steps, and some beyond-repair teak/holly in the head below. SeaCork to the rescue. A lovely installation by Rob Mould of REM Yacht Repair in Connecticut, this…

  • Easy to Install
  • Easy to Maintain
  • Sustainable
  • There is no need for expensive power saws, routers, etc. when installing a Seacork floor. A sharp utility knife, pen and straight edge are about all you will need. A Dremel tool and some power sanding tools might be helpful, depending on your desired finished product. After creating proper templates for your pieces, it’s simply a matter of cutting, light sanding, cleaning of the surface, and glueing in place. This site has helpful step-by-step instructions for various kinds of projects, so you know what to expect and can avoid any issues. These projects are easily handled by a moderately skilled Do-It-Yourselfer.
  • The key to lasting durability of a cork floor is dirt management. If you regularly sweep or vacuum your cork floor, and put out floor rugs near entryways to prevent tracked in dirt, your cork floor will require very little additional maintenance. The regimen will depend largely on the installation and finish you choose. At one end of the spectrum is an unfinished cork area on the transom of a boat. Regular scrubbing with sea water, every 4-6 days, will result in a very clean and tidy appearance, although the cork will fade to natural gray color, just like teak. At the other end of the spectrum is a cork shower floor installation, which because of constant rinsing, will likely never need any additional maintenance.
  • Cork flooring is actually made from the cultivated waste of the cork wine-stopper manufacturing process, so it is a recycled product. Cork harvesting does not harm the trees, and is a highly regulated process to ensure sustainability. Bottle stopper “corks” are punched from the best material in the harvested cork bark slabs. The remaining material is then ground into smaller granules, mixed with a non-toxic resin binder, molded into large blocks and baked in specialized ovens – making use of every scrap of cork bark. There is practically no waste from the harvesting of the raw material to the manufacturing of flooring.

Some Features of Cork Flooring

  • Comfortable Underfoot, Easy on Your Body
  • Resilient to Abuse, Including High Heels and Hammers
  • Absorbs and Attenuates Sound and Vibration
  • Excellent insulator of both Temperature and Sound
  • Asorbs Very Little Heat, Maintaining Barefoot Comfort in Direct Sun
  • Produces an Excellent Non-Slip Surface, Even When Wet
  • Resists Stains and Liquids, Mold and Mildew
  • Resists Fire, and is Unattractive to Termites, Ants and other Insects

What clients are saying about seacork.

We couldn't be happier. It's soft and quiet underfoot, doesn't get hot in the sun, and is easy to care for. I was so impressed, not only have we added more cork to the boat, I built this website so others could discover SeaCork too! ☆☆☆☆☆ Randy F. - San Diego, CA
From the low maintenance, traditional look, cushion and thermal comfort, Sea Cork fits all our needs. Additional benefits include safety because of its nonslip properties, even when wet, and its tolerance of spills and salt water. Thad N. - San Diego, CA
I am surprised that more people have not chosen cork as a replacement for teak. We extensively researched the alternatives to teak and concluded that cork was by far the best choice. We did all the work ourselves. If anyone is interested in knowing more about this amazing material I am more than happy to respond. Deb C. - S/V Beedahbun
Went together just like it was supposed to. Easy and clean, with minimal tool work. It's a great improvement over what was there, and the crew love how sure-footed it is. Highly recommended. Ray P. - San Diego, CA

Boat Flooring Options

Table of Contents

Boats can be built from wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber, aluminum, and steel. There are even boats made of concrete.

The flooring (referred to as decks by the salty crowd) in every boat is different. However, every type of flooring on any vessel needs to be durable and non-skid. It also needs to be able to hold up to being constantly subjected to sun and water.

Unless it is the flooring below decks (inside the boat) and protected from the weather. Here you can use wood, vinyl flooring, linoleum, tile, plush carpet, and other quality flooring materials to cover your decks.

What types of boat flooring can I put in my boat?

Replacing old boat flooring can be a do-it-yourself project when using some materials for flooring. Other materials, however, may require someone skilled in the art of wood, steel, or aluminum to update or replace your boat’s flooring.

There are five common types of boat flooring. Some boats have only one type of flooring, while others may have two, three, or even all five types of material covering their floors.

The following are examples of different flooring materials you can use to cover the flooring of your boat.

1. What woods are used for boat flooring?

wood boat flooring

The traditional material for boat hulls is wood. The wood used for topside decking, cockpit floors, and floors in the cabin can be costly. The woods used for boat flooring must be able to stand up to years of a wet, humid atmosphere. These wood options include:

  • Oak parquet
  • Marine-grade plywood

All of these woods run to the expensive side. Therefore, any error when installing wood can be costly. Unless you are very handy with tools and know your way around how a boat is constructed, installing wood flooring on a boat should be left up to professionals.

2. Is canvas used for boat flooring?

The odds of you seeing a boat with canvas on any portion of its flooring are remote. That is unless you have an interest in classical boats.

Canvas was commonly used as a flooring (decking) material for the upper decks of wooden boats pre 1960. And boat builders still use canvas to cover the decks of older boats for those who want them to maintain their authenticity.

Owners of old boats that have been built in this manner will remove the canvas and seal the decks with epoxy. Sealing a wooden boat in epoxy can protect the wood longer than paint , whether the vessel is new or 70 years old.

The application of epoxy to a wooden boat includes applying it to the flooring above and below decks. Encapsulating wood in epoxy will seal it and protect it from the elements for decades.

3. What are Specialty marine finishes?

Specialty marine finishes are paints, sealers, varnishes, and epoxies that have been developed for the marine industry. Formulated to fend off the harsh conditions of life on the water, they will keep your boat protected for years.

Acrylic marine paints have been developed that are easy to apply, hold up quite well, and are available in many colors. In addition, you have the choice of gloss, semi-gloss, satin finishes, and non-skid finishes. Easier to use than traditional oil-based paints, they offer easy clean-up and are much more forgiving, too.

The floor outside of your boat needs to have a finish that is not slick when wet. Non-skid finishes are essential for your safety and that of your boat’s occupants, and there’s a specialty finish for that. Paint kits that include making boat-flooring skid resistant are another viable option when you want new boat flooring.

Exterior painted surfaces will protect your boat from five to seven years before you must do it again. However, painting a boat is labor-intensive, and some finishes, including water-based acrylic marine paints, require application by a professional. So now you’re talking real money.

4. What is marine vinyl flooring?

With attributes you won’t find in household flooring, marine vinyl flooring is made to hold up to the elements and has a non-skid finish. In addition, it is tough, durable, and comes in many colors so that matching your boat’s color scheme is no problem.

Marine-grade vinyl flooring can be used on outside areas of your boat and down below. It is easy to clean with a brush and soapy water, so whether above or below, keeping your boat shipshape is easy with marine vinyl flooring.

Marine vinyl flooring will maintain its color, provide traction, and remain resistant to water for seven to ten years. This durability gives marine vinyl more longevity than a professional paint job or marine carpeting, both of which will last five to seven years if properly maintained.

5. What type of carpet is best for boats?

The best type of carpet for boats is a carpet designed for the wet environment where boats reside. Indoor/outdoor carpet is made from polypropylene, naturally resistant to water and fading from UV exposure.

This difference between one marine carpet and another is the weight of the carpet material and whether it has been treated to resist mold and mildew. Untreated carpet can begin to mold very quickly once subjected to water.

Therefore, it will shorten the useful life of your boat flooring.

Marine carpeting is the most straightforward do-it-yourself project when replacing boat flooring. Except for vinyl marine flooring, the other materials listed here are much more time-consuming to install than laying carpet. It comes down to how much you want to spend and what appearance you want when you replace your boat’s flooring.

What is the cheapest option for flooring?

Marine carpet is the least expensive option for boat flooring. Due to its ease of installation, you may be able to do it yourself, which lowers the cost of boat flooring replacement. However, labor is expensive, and if you don’t need to hire any, you can save money by installing marine carpet on your boat.

If you take the time to keep it clean and prevent it from getting moldy, it will last as long as the other listed boat floorings. When you combine that attribute with a lower price per square foot than that of even paint and its longevity, carpet is the value winner for boat flooring replacement.

Owning a boat is expensive – need some help?

The maintenance of boat flooring, painting, engine maintenance, fuel, and everything that goes along with owning a boat is costly. So often, your boat will sit neglected because you can’t find time to use it, and a boat unused will go downhill pretty fast.

Would you like a way for your boat to help pay for its expenses? As well as an opportunity to be paid to get out onto the water in your boat?

Well, you can when you  list your boat with Boatsetter.  We offer a marketplace that lists your boat for rent around your local waterways or some exotic locale. You will have the option of renting your boat alone or adding your services as captain of your ship.

Our expansive fleet of boat owners rent their sailboats, fishing boats, cabin cruisers, houseboats, and luxury yachts . Boats to rent are available at locations across the United States, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and beyond. You and your boat could join this expanding fleet and help defray the ever-rising cost of boat ownership.

Now that you’ve decided replacing boat flooring is the way to go, it’s always a good idea to take the help of some excellent and valuable guides. You can hire a professional to redo your boat flooring as several professionals in the market can do the job at a reasonable price. On the other hand, doing it all by yourself will help to save a few bucks.

The process of replacing the boat flooring includes the following parts:

  • Choosing the appropriate flooring.
  • Gathering the required tools.
  • Following how-to guide steps to replace the flooring.

If you’re cautious about proper flooring reinstallation, you’ve reached the right place. This article is all about replacing the boat’s flooring, so keep reading it until the end for lots of valuable information.

Boat Flooring Replacement Options

Here are a few boat floor replacement options to consider when replacing your boat’s floor. ( source )

  • Aluminum For Replacing Boat Flooring

Aluminum has several advantages over wood (though wood isn’t a bad option either). It’s straightforward to install, and the maintenance is relatively cheaper. Aluminum is lighter and more durable than wood, so you can easily make your boat lighter without compromising its overall strength.

Top-rated fish finders on Amazon

Unfortunately, you can’t just use the regular aluminum (used in the windows, etc.) as that will make your boat floor very slippery. The boat market sells different types of aluminum, especially for this purpose. Additionally, aluminum flooring might not look much appealing.

  • Fiberglass For Repairing Boat Flooring

Replacing fiberglass boat floor is messy, but a job you can do yourself. You can consider the cost of fiberglass to be average (neither expensive nor cheap). Fiberglass can suit any flooring design. It’s very flexible (in terms of applicability) and can make the floor smooth.

Sadly, fiberglass can break easily, so you’ll have to be cautious about not accidentally damaging the flooring. Even though that makes the maintenance level high, the cost of each maintenance session isn’t that high though. Cleaning it will be time-consuming and requires regular cleaning.

It is the most popular option for boat flooring. Wood proves to be pretty durable and offers an appealing touch to the floor. It doesn’t require much maintenance and cleaning as well. There are several types of wood you can use to replace your boat’s bottom. For instance, oak is the best choice as it features water resistance properties.

However, any good quality wood which offers durability also costs more. The wood flooring fades away sooner, so you’ll have to spend on maintenance to revive its shine and gloss.

It is another cheap and reliable option for your boat flooring. It’s just like wood, but less costly and less durable. Several plywood options include-

  • Marine Plywood

involves a unique production process in withstanding moisture, hence marine plywood . It’s available in various appearances, dimensions, and grades. These are the different marine plywood grades. ( source )

Top-rated boat gps on Amazon

In my experience, marine plywood is the best material for boat floor replacement. But I’m a woodworking kind of guy. Fiberglass is also pretty good if you don’t mind working with it.

  • MDO (Medium-Density Overlay)
  • HDO (High-Density Overlay)
  • Pressure-Treated aka Outdoor Grade Plywood

involves a different production process for it to be resistant to weather damage. The chemical treatment makes it green-colored and insoluble in water, which reduces water absorption.

Anti-slippery rubber mats target boat floors. They’re resistant to water but require protection from fire. Rubber mats have decent durability and are available at a low to average price. You can install the rubber mats over the primary flooring (such as wood, aluminum, etc.) to enhance the boat’s appearance.

Replacing boat floor and carpet is easier than you think. Marine carpet is another flooring option to install over the primary flooring. There’s a huge variety of fancy mats available in the market. They aren’t much durable and require regular cleaning. Furthermore, they’re vulnerable to fire accidents, but since they’re cheap, changing the carpet (like once or twice a year) can renew your boat’s appearance.

Step By Step Guide

Materials Required

Replacing the boat flooring.

Now that you’ve finalized the flooring material, it’s the installation time. ( source )

  • First, remove all the seats and anything fixed to the floor.
  • Make sure to disconnect the wiring. Cut off the power supply to avoid electrical accidents.
  • Leave a 3-inches trim on the boat’s edges. That way, you can ensure that you don’t accidentally puncture the edges. Also, the trimmed part will offer great support to the new flooring since it’s attached to the boat’s framework.
  • Make a note of the existing screw holes in the boat. You can put the screws back into those holes after installing the new flooring.
  • Carefully measure the new flooring pieces by using the old flooring as a template as much as possible. If that’s not possible, take the measuring tape or use any other method conveniently.
  • If you’re installing wooden flooring, you can soak the wooden pieces in epoxy to make them water-resistant. It is an optional part, as we’ve covered another “sealing the wooden flooring” guide up next.
  • The wooden flooring pieces can be glued together with the marine glue because it’s waterproof hence the name marine glue. This way, you can avoid screws to some extent.
  • After installing the screws wherever necessary to fix the flooring. Place the screws in the previously drilled holes (for the old flooring).
  • Install all the seats and any other equipment you removed in the first step. Rewire all the electrical stuff.

Sealing The Wooden Flooring

Since wood and plywood are vulnerable to damage from weather, moisture, and water (no matter how well chemically treated), it’s always a good idea to seal them. Follow the steps below to secure the flooring with any sealant. ( source )

  • Smoothen the flooring with sandpaper or run an orbital sander on the wooden surface.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the sawdust.
  • Pour sealant into a paint tray. The sealant quantity should be 2 inches thick on the boat surface.
  • Use a paint roller and roll it on the surface to apply the sealant to the entire flooring. Let it dry for at least 6 hours.
  • Since one coat isn’t enough, repeat the process every 6 hours to achieve a thick-coated layer on the boat’s surface.

Precautions (Mistakes To Avoid) When Replacing Boat Flooring

There are a few mistakes that most people make when replacing the boat flooring. To avoid a bitter floor-changing experience, why not cover that stuff. ( source )

  • Resolving The Rot

The boat floor often rots due to moisture and water (which is natural). If you encounter any rot on the floor, scrub it off, or else it’ll spread. Generally, a boat floor starts rotting because of the mold. Resolving the corrosion caused by mold by cleaning it off in the early stage can help prevent further damage to the floor.

Next, you can’t just leave the floor as it is after cleaning. The best way to fix this issue is to replace the wood portion.

  • Never Use The Nails

Most people nail the boat floor without having second thoughts. Boat floors are NOT SUITABLE FOR NAILS. Nails in a boat floor weaken the structure dramatically, and you’re degrading the boat’s longevity without realizing it. The best and the recommended method is to drill the holes with a drilling machine and drive the screws.

Screws’ grooves give a better grip than nails of the same length. Also, the nails require a lot of force to be pushed in. Nails create spaces from where the water can quickly get into the boat.

But in case you can’t avoid nails, then it’s recommended to use wood putty and epoxy on the nails. That way, it’ll cover any gaps made by the nails and also protects them from rusting, which could further damage the floor in the long run.

  • Avoid Using Wrong Materials

You must ensure that the epoxy you’re using (you could soak the wood or coat the flooring) is waterproof. There’s a fair chance that you might be accidentally using the non-water-resistant epoxy, which will put all your efforts in vain.

Do I Need To Replace Boat Floor?

That’s a question you might want to ask yourself before deciding to replace the boat floor. Since the task requires a lot of time, energy, and patience, you might want to think of an alternative. Also, there are relatively high chances of messing up and ruining the entire project. It’s good to hire a professional to inspect the boat to determine whether you need to replace the boat flooring entirely or partially or do the patchwork.

  • If the floor has rotten severely, it probably needs to be replaced. If rotten partially, then replace the affected part.
  • Inspect the flooring to determine whether or not an epoxy coating would be enough.
  • There’s no need to replace the floor entirely in case of a minor leak(s) or partially damaged floor. A simple patchwork might be sufficient.

By the end of this article, you must have learned the basic mistakes that most people make while repairing the boat flooring. The report also covered the step-by-step guide to replacing the floor and sealing the wooden flooring. We’ve also suggested a few flooring options. We’re confident that you’re good to get started with your boat flooring replacement.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

catamaran boat flooring

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

catamaran boat flooring

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

catamaran boat flooring

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

catamaran boat flooring

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

catamaran boat flooring

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

catamaran boat flooring

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

catamaran boat flooring

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
