Excess 14 Details

With the long-awaited introduction of the new Excess 14, Excess Catamarans squarely hits the bullseye of the brand’s cruising DNA. It is performance catamaran sailing in a production catamaran. And it brings a new standard of performance to the catamaran community.

New from the ground up, much like her sistership, the Excess 11, the Excess 14 accommodates many of the thoughts and design ideas of the Excess team. They incorporated these and other trends and put them together in a production boat unlike most others on the market.

Building on the success of the 38-foot Excess 11, the 50-foot Excess 14 (52’5” with optional composite bowsprit) moves the initial Excess concept farther into advanced boat design, specifically in the use of asymmetrical hull shapes, and a rig best suited for performance sailing, if not racing. 

The builder stopped short of deep daggerboards and interior compromises required for all-out performance, but there is more than enough of this technology to satisfy sailors interested in a brisk sailing experience rather than simply moving along to the next sun-drenched anchorage. 

The Excess 14 is for those who have the need for speed…and whose crew demands comfortable accommodations.

In fact, the Excess builder specifically developed this boat to appeal to millennial, monohull sailors who want the monohull sailing experience with the space and comfort of a modern catamaran. 

The hull length is 43’9” and the beam is 25’9”, dimensions that define a good-sized platform for comfortable living and offshore capability. The boat’s draft is 4’10”, a good compromise between shallow water boating where catamarans are known to excel, and upwind performance so often lacking in cruising catamarans. The Excess 14 will not disappoint when sailing to windward or running downwind. 

The house on the Excess 14 sits farther back than other cruising cats, and the mast is stepped forward of the cabin house, much like the Excess 11.

One of the significant design elements of the Excess 14 are the asymmetrical hulls. That means the outboard surfaces of the hulls are rounded as one expects. But the interior sides of each hull are flat. While this may not be a really new design feature in the history of multihulls, its benefits are apparent for a performance catamaran. The hull’s asymmetrical shape moves the center of buoyancy to the outboard side of the hull, so the boat seems to have a wider beam and righting moment. The flat sides of the interior hulls also affect the waves produced by the hulls going through the water, which reduces interference drag.

Coupled with inverted bows (that are easily lifted out of the water) and a transom more fully immersed, the result is a better maneuvering boat that is also easier to steer.

While the standard Excess 14 may just make it under ICW bridges, most people will find the optional Pulse Line pack is the way to go: the heck with the ICW. The Pulse option includes a taller rig (over 70 feet) with square-topped main, greater upwind sail area (1453 sq ft), and a 926-sq-foot Code O on its own furler. And its exterior details and graphics do more than hint at its performance.

With a displacement of just over 28,000 lbs, the boat comes standard with twin 45hp diesels (57hp engines are optional), two 53-gallon fuel tanks, 79 standard gallons of water, and two 21-gallon holding tanks.

All Excess catamarans have aft twin cockpits, located so that forward visibility is unrestricted. The person at the helm can see the wind and waves ahead as if sailing a monohull. In addition, clear saloon windows allow one to see across the deck to the other side of the boat from either helm location. This allows the sailing experience enjoyed by monohull sailors but with the added safety and security of good visibility across the rest of the wide real estate of the catamaran. And the steering is further enhanced by a steering system using textile lines to provide a superior feel between the rudders and wheel at the helm, not possible with hydraulic systems.

There are those who argue that aft helms are a poor location for long distance sailing, especially offshore. However, those sailing offshore will no doubt engage the boat’s autopilot to steer the boat on passages, rather than having a person at these helms for long watches. This scenario clearly works, as an Excess 11 took first place in its division in the 2021 ARC across the Atlantic.

The Excess 14 has a CE rating of Class A Offshore, for those interested in going farther afield than simply fast cruising in local waters.

The three-cabin standard layout is ideal for most couples. The starboard hull is dedicated to the owners, with a large aft walk-around berth, with a private living area forward. This living module includes a private dry bath, a private dressing area near the bow, and plenty of clothes and personal storage kept separate from the rest of the boat.

The port hull includes two cabins with sizable berths with ensuite heads and separate showers. The days of the wet head are apparently over for modern catamaran cruisers. Camping is not a requirement on the Excess line of catamarans.

The bridgedeck saloon deck is up a few steps from either hull. In addition to full windows all around for great visibility, there is a bright and contemporary interior treatment that highlights an interior preferred by younger sailors who don’t care for dark, traditional finishes. There is a nice centerline settee and table, and an L-shaped galley on the port side. Everything, in fact, one needs on a cruising boat.

With the sliding door open to the cockpit, the living spaces on this boat are enormous and extremely livable.

The Excess 14 will be a hit. It has a niche audience waiting for what it has to offer, in a package that combines production efficiency and value with performance, something the cruising world has been asking for.

Excess 14 Catamaran Launch

Thanks to Thibaut and Herve from Excess Catamarans for sharing the designs and thoughts behind their new model: the Excess 14 .

Like her smaller sister the Excess 11, the 14 has been developed from the ground up by Excess along with VPLP and Nauta design. She’s a completely new design. You can read our Excess 14 review on Katamarans.

First Impressions

They have followed the sporty look of the 11 with aft helms and a low boom for maximum sailing feel on the water. Some of the innovations we picked up on include:

Asymmetric hulls. According to Thibaud, they have spent a lot of time modelling the hull shape to get the best balance between speed through the water and living space. The cross section profile of the hulls is asymmetric.

Overlapping Gennaker The 14 will be powered by an overlapping genoa. Like the 11, the 14 will be available with a standard rig or powered up with a Pulse Line rig.

Deeper Keels One of the other areas they have been looking at, is the depth of the keels: modeling sailing performance for different depths of fixed keel. The starting point was daggerboards, but have stuck to fixed keels and gone slightly longer. The draft will be just over 1.4m.

2 Bowsprit Options There are 2 bowsprits you can go for, both are part of the structure of the boat rather than being bolted on- a configuration similar to high performance brands. The standard bowsprit takes the boat length from 13.34m up to 13.97m. An optional longer bowsprit will take the total boat length up to 15.99m (including davits)

New Helm Seat Design The helms remain aft, but Excess have developed a new design for the double helm seat on each side of the boat. I’m looking forward to seeing more details on those.

Flexible Living Space Down Below It looks like they have developed some very interesting options in the forward cabin where you can flex the space between 2 single berths and a walk in wardrobe.

Weight It sounds like the Weight Police have been busy on this boat. Projected weight will be between 12-13 tonnes. It’s not an area that they are obsessing over to gain (for example) half a knot, but at the same time, the idea is to design and produce a comfortable cruising catamaran with good sailing sensations.

Aqua Cat 14 Catamaran

The larger version of one of the world's most popular one design catamarans brings you performance, simplicity and weight carrying capabilities not offered in other catamarans this size. Featuring wide, flat bottom hulls with turned up bows and a small keel skeg, the pontoon design is unequaled in weight carrying capacity and planing speed. The boomless sail rig supported by the tubular "a" frame provides simplicity and safety not found in traditional wire shroud designs. One sheetline and a simple tiller arrangement result in sailing simplicity, fun and excitement. Weighing in at 230 lbs. and with a 6-1/2 foot beam, it can easily be car topped or trailered to your favorite spot on the beach. Constructed of hand laid fiberglass, anodized aluminum tubing and stainless steel fasteners, maintenance is at a minimum. The rudder system is durable all aluminum construction with gudgeons through bolted to aluminum plates inside the hull and features wide performance designed aluminum blades. Positive foam flotation in each hull, plus the added feature of the mast flotation ball provide a measure of confidence and safety.

Standard features include spring loaded kick up rudders, 105 sq. ft. Dacron two colored sail, a 360 quick release cleat and rudder lift systems. RESORT SPECIAL VERSION OF AQUA CAT 14 CATAMARAN

Exceedingly popular as a resort rental craft, the Aqua Cat 14 has proven itself as an excellent investment. Its simplicity allows use by the most inexperienced and offers a stable, safe and fun filled package for the Hotel Guest.

American Sail manufactures a slightly slower version of this popular catamaran for use in resort locations where most sailors are novices. The resort special features a smaller sail (90 square foot), a shorter mast and eliminates the 360 main sheet cleat to require the sailor to hold the rope controlling the sail thus reducing capsize possibilities.

RS Cat 14XL: 2019 Beach Cat

When the time comes for Boat of the Year judge Chuck Allen to test the RS Cat 14XL, he jumps on board and quickly organizes ropes and control lines before cinching the chin strap of his goofy hat with a long neck flap. He pushes off from the Highfield RIB and looks upwind for the next big gust. The catamaran’s tall heavy-duty mainsail fills, and he leans forward, snugs the jib sheet and jets away, with rooster tails spitting from the roto-molded transoms of the catamaran. Soon, the weather hull is skimming above the surface and the boat is in perfect balance. Flying along at speed with ease and grace, Allen’s cap flap is streaming behind his head. He’s perched in the weather hull’s concave seat, comfy and cruising with a cool-guy cat-sailor pose.

He’s digging the experience, as is RS Sailing representative and professional cat sailor Todd Riccardi, who says the $11,000 RS Cat 14XL is a recreational beach cat that’s not just for youth sailors. It’s big fun for big kids too. “It has a sweet groove upwind,” Allen says. “For a 14-foot roto-molded boat, it really hums along. I had no problem climbing to weather once it got going, and when you get the weight in the right place, the weather hull just skimming, it’s really fast.”

Recreational sailing is RS Sailing’s wheelhouse, so much of the design and hardware consideration went toward making the RS Cat 14 a versatile platform to start with. The standard boat has a main and jib, and the XL brings a spinnaker, trapezes and a lot more sizzle. Its wave-piercing bows work excellent in short chop, so it’s a forgiving ride, and an aluminum spreader bar prevents the bows from flexing, a problem common to catamarans. If there’s one thing to be said of the boat, Stewart says, it’s that it’s stiff. Integration of the crossbeams and reinforcements at load-bearing locations in the hulls keeps it all tight.

Rigging the boat and handling the sail controls is child’s play. With a single-line hoist for the spinnaker, you simply pull the halyard a few times, and up it goes. Same in reverse. Simple 2-to-1 jib sheets, spinnaker sheets and a 6-to-1 cunningham will keep a forward crew entertained while the skipper has a mainsheet and traveler led from the aft beam.

The traveler can essentially be left alone, Allen says, because fun is apparent-wind sailing. With the Cat 14XL, you’ll be sailing higher angles, so you can set and forget it — most of the time. Judge Tom Rich learned this on his first go. Downwind, in strong breeze, if you ease the main too far, bad things happen. Things like pitch-poles. “If you ease the main too much downwind, it pressures the top of the sail and encourages a pitch-pole,” Riccardi says.

After being plucked from the water, Rich confesses that his “epic capsize” only happened because he was hot-dogging for his fellow judges.

“It’s a fun boat to sail,” he says. “I think I had it going upwind pretty good, with the hull up and going really fast. It feels great. But downwind, I struggled to find a comfortable place to drive and trim the chute at the same time. With practice, I’m sure I would be much better. It’s well laid out, easy to sail and peppy enough in the light winds.

Rich’s capsize recovery, however, is a challenge for the team’s senior judge. He douses the spinnaker from the water, climbs on board and hangs like hell on the righting line, with no avail. The flotation pod at the top of the aluminum mast is doing its job, preventing the boat from turtling. He tries righting it several times more before resorting to sliding back into the water and swimming the bows into the wind. Problem solved.

When it’s his turn, Allen keeps the boat upright, and only ­relinquishes the helm when forced to do so. “I can see someone going out and sailing this boat all day long,” he says. “When it’s windy, you’re going to want to sail it all day long, just sending it. Even with just the main and jib, it’s plenty fast. You really don’t even need to hike, so you don’t have to work hard to go fast. Just play the sail, lock it in and fly hull.”

2022 Boat of the Year: Best Performance Catamaran

OK, confession time. When the roster of nominees for the 2022 Boat of the Year awards was released, the contest’s team and judging panel couldn’t help themselves, and quietly put three check marks, little symbols of anticipation, alongside a trio of boats: the untamed cats that would vie for the title of best performer in their class. After all, both Balance and Seawind had entered the winner’s circle in previous BOTY competitions, and it was clear they’d have a serious contender for the throne in yet another player from cat-crazy South Africa, the Kinetic KC54. How’d it go? Let’s just say, nobody was disappointed. The conditions on Chesapeake Bay were ideal for putting the three nominees through their paces, and the trio of scalded cats all acquitted themselves superbly. 

For 2022, if anything, the trend for flybridge catamarans is on a major upswing. New cats for 2022 from both Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot continued down that design path, putting an emphasis on living accommodations, not performance. But not aboard the latest Seawind 1600 , a brand originally built in Australia that is now produced in Vietnam. And that suits judge Tim Murphy just fine. “This boat was very dialed in,” he said, “and one place Seawind has always been innovative is with their helms. This one was really great; it was -outboard and aft with great visibility, sort of half-protected where you could step in and out. There was also good access to the boom and mainsail, which you don’t always see on cats. The deck layout was excellent, particularly the forward trampolines. Some cats have lacings with large openings where you can twist an ankle, but these were nice and tight.”

“Compared to other Seawinds that I’ve seen, I was just blown away with it in terms of what it could do and how it performed,” said Ed Sherman.  “It’s a fairly conservative boat in terms of technology compared to some of the other boats in the same category, which depending on a potential buyer’s state of mind, could be either a good thing or a bad one. I loved the centralized winch aft which is where all the sail-handling takes place. It’s pretty brilliant for a short-handed crew, and it’s all in a very safe and easy-to-access location that a cruising couple can deal with without scaring the heck out of themselves.”

The Kinetic KC54 is a fresh entry in the cat universe, and we’ll let Tim Murphy get right to the point: “This is a fairly new company that was started within the past couple of years. My breath was absolutely taken away by this boat; it was spectacular. I think it was the best-built boat in the entire fleet. It’s an all-carbon boat, with a foam core, epoxy resin, all infused–fantastic. The whole boat felt integrated. You didn’t feel like there was a conflict between the forces in terms of accommodation versus performance.” With a price tag approaching $3 million, it perhaps should not be astonishing. That was a major factor in evaluating the boat, and while it did not win its class, the experts panel did present it with a Judges’ Special Recognition prize to honor the boat’s overall excellence.

“It was my personal favorite in this year’s contest,” said Sherman. The materials that were used are absolutely the highest quality available in our industry at this point, and it’s a very high-tech boat in terms of systems.” Gerry Douglas was also duly impressed: “This was the Tesla of sailboats. I think that that was their model. In terms of design and execution and technology, it hit all three of those marks. This boat is built without compromise, and what it cost was not an issue, they just wanted to do the best they could in every aspect of the boat. The construction was impeccable, the fit and finish was amazing. There are some very clever design things in the boat, but it all really worked seamlessly.”  

With that level of competition, the Balance 482 had a tall order to overcome to win its class. And it did. “The sailing performance was excellent,” said Douglas. “The boat felt really good. The steering was terrific. The structure of the boat throughout was exemplary. Storage is really good. Visibility was good. Ventilation was great. There was even a rain collection system on the cabin top, which is the only one of the boats we looked at had that. It was very well concealed because the gutters formed a handhold going forward. The solar panel installation was also well done. The panels were encapsulated into a fiberglass tray that elevated the deck so the panels wouldn’t overheat. Very clever.”

The driving force behind Balance cats is Phil Berman, a world champ at racing beach cats who brought that passion to developing and marketing fully found cruisers. Judge Murphy knows him well: “Phil comes from a very strong view of wanting to see boats that have solid sailing performance. He’s also a strong proponent of daggerboard boats, which tends to be quick shorthand for the dividing line between cats that are more about payload versus cats that are about performance, but not so much where you’re going to fly a hull or break a rudder. There’s a balance within a boat that really performs that you can still live aboard.” A winning balance, it turns out, with the Balance 482 securing its position as the Best Performance Cruiser for 2022.

Known as a specialist in smaller sailing dinghies, British manufacturer RS Sailing has recently launched a range of light catamarans aimed at sailing school or family use. For the moment, there are two models. Nicolas Honor, the brand’s importer in France, gave us a demonstration of the smaller (and most recent) of the two, the RS Cat 14, in its XL version.

Though RS Sailing’s catamaran range is currently limited to the RS Cat 16 and 14, these two models have clearly managed to establish themselves as one of the players in the sports multihull business; this manufacturer who traditionally specialized in sailing dinghies has simply applied the rules that have made their monohull models so successful – build quality, attractive design, competitive prices. In fact, RS Sailing has been able to convince many sailing clubs to build an RS Cat fleet. The 16 is perfectly suited for two adults, while the 14, and this is the one we’re taking a look at today, is more suited to children. However, the RS Cat 14 has significant volume, as it is able to support a crew totaling 790 lbs (360 kg). Compared that to the maximum load of 350 lbs (160 kg) for a Hobie Cat 14. New catamarans: 2021’s most exciting launches

Fast cruising is the theme this year, say Toby Hodges and Sam Fortescue, who look at some of 2021's exciting new multihull launches

2021 looks set to be a bumper year for new catamarans as the trend for fast cruising yachts, which deliver plenty if living space continues. This year there are set to be several new catamarans on the market, here’s our selection of those about which we are most excited.

A group of wild enthusiasts in the landlocked Czech Republic are the force behind the new IC36 from Independent Catamaran. The debut model is a fully race-tuned cat that aims to appeal to speed freaks as well as performance cruisers. Oh, and it unbolts to fit inside a shipping container or on a trailer!

Perhaps closer in design terms to the Extreme 40 than a traditional cat, the IC36 has super narrow hulls, high displacement bows and an optional rotating carbon rig with composite stays.

A sporty-looking carbon beam braces the bows and doubles as a bowsprit for asymmetric sails. Deep daggerboards help windward performance, and there’s a racy dual carbon tiller providing direct rudder control.

“The first time I saw it, I just felt like it was from one of Jules Verne’s adventures,” says co-founder Jaromír Popek.

The boat has been optimised for electric propulsion with twin 6kW Oceanvolt saildrives and up to 15kWh of lithium-ion batteries giving a range of a couple of hours. Powerful hydrogeneration under sail keeps batteries topped up. For longer spells at anchor , there is also a decent 1.15kW array of Solbian solar panel s which folds away when not required.

As much fun as this boat should be to sail in its Raw racing variant, it is also available with more creature comforts.

The Pacer model has a coachroof, cockpit tent, more storage and cooking and freshwater systems. It can accommodate a reported eight people in the hulls, with a fridge and two-burner hob to port and a shower/heads to starboard. Or you can opt for a fridge and hob in the folding cockpit table.

Construction is in epoxy-glass composite with local Kevlar reinforcement and foam core, helping to keep weight down to less than 3 tonnes (key for trailering). And there are three buoyancy chambers in each hull, which underpin the claim that the boat is unsinkable.

For all the variants, the light weight and high-performance rig means you can sail in a breath of wind. In a blow, the sky should be the limit. Expect reaching speeds of 20 knots plus, particularly if you take the high-modulus carbon wing mast from Pauger.

This new launch from the world’s number one catamaran brand is the largest in the range of ‘regular’ boats, before entering the more luxurious world of the Lagoon 65.

It has been drawn by VPLP and Patrick le Quement, whose design nous has done much to make cats more mainstream. Many of the features, therefore, will be familiar from the smaller boats.

However, that extra length creates more volume below, so the Lagoon 55 can be arranged with up to six true double cabins with ensuite heads. “It’s the first time we have six cabins of the same size and function and a larger flybridge,” explains products developments manager Martina Torrini during a premiere virtual tour of the first model to launch in March.

Another first is the curving steps up from the transom skirt to the aft deck, dubbed ‘the stairway to heaven’. “The surfaces of the transom can be used differently,” adds Torrini. “Not just a way to access the boat, they become in themselves a living area.” This feature extends the size of the cockpit to 25m2, and even offers a plancha grill.

There’s more social space on the huge flybridge (with fridge and bar) and a movable sunpad on the forward part of the coachroof. The boat also features Lagoon’s first ever dedicated forward cockpit, connected to the saloon by a drop-down window.

A 107m2 fat-head main provides grunt, but is coupled with a self-tacking jib. As with all Lagoons, the emphasis is on comfort and ease of use rather than speed and windward pointing ability.

Fountaine Pajot Samana 59

Replacing the five-year-old Ipanema 58, this luxurious 59-footer integrates many of the new design features of the 45, which boasted longer, wider hulls that nevertheless showed 10% less drag. Chief among the new attractions is an enlarged cockpit, forward lounge and flybridge, for more socialising space.

“We wanted to emphasise her identity by optimising her interior and exterior spaces to make this 59ft catamaran the equivalent of a larger yacht,” explains designer Olivier Racoupeau.

“Whether it’s the flybridge, the cockpit or the saloon, we’ve worked hard to find harmony between all the living spaces on board, to gain every millimetre inside and outside.”

There’s a door forward out of the saloon, and the option of a hydraulic bathing platform, which doubles up for tender storage. Up to six cabins are offered, and the rare option of putting the galley up in the saloon or down to port. Hull number one is joining the World ARC .

Meanwhile, a new 51 is tipped for launch in 2022, which will focus on sustainability and have 2kW of flush solar panels built into the flybridge.

The new 42 replaces the Leopard 40, and it draws on the latest design thinking from the larger boats in the range. Like the award-winning Leopard 50, it has continuous hull windows, a hardtop, and contrasting coachroof accents. But it also goes further, with plumb bows and long horizontal chines.

That lounging space on the coachroof adds 65% to the exterior entertainment area. “By integrating the geometry of the lounge into the GRP hardtop, we were able to achieve a lightweight area that added less weight to the boat than one average sized crewmember,” explains Michael Robertson, chief designer at builder Robertson & Caine. It has been cleverly engineered so as not to steal headroom from the cockpit.

In contrast to many modern cats, the Leopard 42 makes a virtue of the separate cockpit and saloon, whose seating is focused on the forward galley. There is lots of glazing and a full-height door out onto the foredeck. Every cabin has a third more floor space and twice the glazed area of the old Leopard 40. Each has an island berth and its own heads with shower.

But it’s not all about space. “Performance potential remains one of the top priorities,” says naval architect Alex Simonis of Simonis-Voogd Yacht Design. “We spend a lot of time refining the rig geometry and the sail layout to boost the efficiency of the rig plan. At the same time, the ongoing refinement in hull and appendage design allows us to create a yacht with better sea motion and more agility.

The new entry-level yacht from France’s Neel Trimarans is designed to bring the world of three hulls to a new clientele.

Building on the success of the larger Neel 47 and Neel 51, the 43 takes the fight to the catamaran, with a big superstructure that includes two double cabins as well as a galley and saloon.

There’s a further double cabin forward in the central nacelle, and cosy singles in either bow. A sliding door and window allows the saloon and the cockpit seating areas to be socially connected, although they remain two very different spaces.

The bulkhead helmstation to starboard has commanding views out over the huge coachroof. From the drawings, this appears to allow a tight sheeting angle for the genoa, but brings the mainsheet, which is fastened to the transom, close to the davits and skirt of the central hull.

The main is square-topped with two full battens and there is also a high-performance carbon spar option.

Though the lay-up is in standard foam-cored glassfibre, Neel says it is leaning towards more environmentally friendly construction. Interior joinery is from sustainable Alpi wood and recyclable material.

Marsaudon Composites has quietly built an enthusiastic following for its TS42 and TS50 catamarans since the smaller boat was launched six years ago.

That these have been the first boats to cross the Atlantic in the last two ARC s has also done its reputation no harm.

The yard is based at Lorient La Base, at the heart of the French offshore racing scene, so it’s perhaps no surprise these designs are lightweight and offer plenty of performance.

The direct tiller steering, which gives a responsive feel to the helm, is an example of the thinking that sets these boats apart from other multihulls and makes them sought after models. Yet they also have enough space both on deck and below to offer very comfortable living.

A 57-footer from the board of Marc Lombard will be the third design to join the stable. It shares the same hallmarks as the existing models, although a wheel steering option will also be offered.

In suitable conditions this is a cruising yacht that can be expected to hit speeds of well over 20 knots.

The hull shape is clearly a progression from the earlier models, while following the same light displacement principles with fine hull shapes. Lombard drew a new shape for the bows to increase efficiency and reduce the tendency for bow-down trim. He told us: “The bows are shaped so that, when the boat is powered up and starts to heel, the lee bow will generate extra lift to push the bow up.”

The additional size makes the interior spaces of this boat significantly larger than those of the 50-footer, especially in the hulls. Much thought has also gone into ergonomics and weight saving, stripping out and simplifying anything that is not essential. CEO Damien Cailliau likes to draw on a quote from Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars: “Simplify, then add lightness.”

As an example, there are no hull linings, which saves weight and complication, but requires extremely neat moulding. “A core competency of Marsaudon Composites is that we produce excellent mouldings,” says Cailliau, “so we don’t need to hide our work.”

As a low volume builder – only 28 of the smaller boats have been built in total – Marsaudon Composites can offer semi-custom interior arrangements, providing they don’t add unnecessary weight. The boat can also be built with varying amounts of carbon to reduce displacement further.

At the same time as announcing this design Marsaudon launched a rebranding of the range, which will now be known as Ocean Rider Catamarans (or ORC). The new name is a better fit with the qualities with which owners identify than the Très Simple concept that led to the original TS designation.

To underscore the difference between these boats and the majority of catamarans in this size range a tiller has been incorporated in the logo.

Tooling for the ORC 57 is under construction and the first boat is scheduled to be unveiled in September 2021.

Current Marine CM46 & CM52

The founder of RS Sailing , Martin Wadhams, is a racing sailor who now spends more and more time cruising.

Martin and his wife, Amanda, enjoy sailing fast boats and have spent some time looking to upgrade from their Pogo 12.50 to a multihull. Their search for a true performance cruising catamaran – and one that wouldn’t cost seven figures – turned out few viable options.

Australian-based designer Jeff Shionning put them onto some fresh designs he has done for Current Marine, a new South African brand formed from an experienced team of composites experts at Knysna, between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the south coast.

It has been set up to build the new CM46 and CM52 in low-volume semi-custom production. On visiting the yard a year ago, Wadhams was impressed enough with the high tech builds to order the second CM46.

He reports that the joinery is all laminated in, there is plenty of opportunity for layout customisation (in three or four cabins) and, owing to the lower labour costs in South Africa, pricing is keen.

Shionning’s CM designs are lightweight, efficient catamarans that should be able to sail well in light breeze and outrun weather systems in the open ocean.

Key features include daggerboards, fine bows, centralised weight of engines and tanks, and high bridgedeck clearance. The rig is also positioned amidships for optimum weight centralisation, while also helping to create a large foretriangle for flying a range of furling headsails. Aluminium or carbon spars and diesel or hybrid propulsion are offered.

Wadhams says there is good stowage space and payload capacity for comfortable liveaboard cruising. “They’re built using post-cured epoxy, carbon, E-Glass and PVC foam-cored laminates – a level above mainstream brands,” he insists. “This brings the construction found in a few larger, high-end boats into smaller-size catamarans.” The first CM46 is a full carbon racing version destined for an Auckland-based owner and is due to launch early 2021. The second boat (for Wadhams) has a more cruising-oriented spec.

Is this the most popular new design of 2021? Although the first of this new 45ft model is not due to launch until later in the autumn, there has already been a phenomenal uptake in orders.

Publicity has been helped by vloggers Sailing Ruby Rose ordering one of the first boats, but a staggering 55 have been sold already. This has led to the Australian/Vietnamese yard establishing a new technical department that is separate from the production department.

European sales manager Jay Nolan says this 13-strong team is tasked with working up every system on the boat and looking at hybrid solutions.

Sunreef Yachts unveils new luxe solar electric Explorer catamaran with over 1,000 kWh in batteries

Sustainable boatbuilder Sunreef Yachts is adding a sleeker, lighter solar electric catamaran to its portfolio. The new Explorer Eco 40m is the company’s smallest electric yacht to date, but debuts with some of the most advanced technology, including Sunreef’s proprietary “solar skin”

Sunreef Yachts  was established in 2002 in Gdansk, Poland where its shipyard and office still operate alongside a newer footprint established at port in the United Arab Emirates. From its very first year, Sunreef has been pushing the boundaries of sustainable marine travel, launching the world’s first 74-foot luxury oceangoing catamaran with a flybridge.

Today, hundreds of Sunreef Yachts are sailing waters across the globe, showcasing the company’s lineup of sustainable luxury catamarans, all-electric propulsion, and advanced solar panels. That current portfolio consists of eco-friendly sailboats and massive solar electric catamarans ranging from 60 to 100 meters in length.

Today, Sunreef shared it has gone smaller, introducing a new 40m electric yacht called the Eco Explorer.

I can't wait for ships to start using latent heat batteries with TPV. It might change the whole conversation about electric shipping. To a paradigm where nothing but electric shipping makes sense. Carbon variants can have volumetric energy density upwards of 1.5MWh/m3 (641kg). Though not all of that useable at maximum power output, I'm guessing. Let's call it 1MWh of useable energy. Pure guesstimate. You'd need 4000kg of 250Wh/kg LiIon batteries do the same.

I think a vessel as big as this would be capable of employing a storage system like that. And I believe that they will be suitable for trains and even larger airplanes. Maybe even trucks.

The company’s new Eco version of the 40m Explorer offers customers a sleeker and more sustainable design in a lighter marine footprint, all without sacrificing the luxury and comfort Sunreef is known for.

Sunreef shared that it favors catamarans over traditional yacht hull designs because require less energy to propel at sea – an important factor in marine electrification. The new Eco Explorer 40m features an ultralight composite build and a state-of-the-art electric powertrain consisting of two 540kW motors and two 550 kWh battery packs – giving the electric yacht the ability to cross oceans.

To support the all-electric powertrain, the Eco Explorer 40m is also covered in Sunreef’s proprietary solar skin, which utilizes every available inch of the hull and structure’s external surface to generate free, clean energy – more than enough to power the electric yacht’s onboard systems, HVAC, AV equipment and even its jacuzzi. Per Sunreef Yachts founder and CEO Francis Lapp:

Sunreef has been at the cutting edge of sustainable yachting since its launch. We are the only superyacht builder to have successfully developed the idea of embedding solar cells into large-scale fibreglass structures. But we’re not content to let technology alone do the work. Many elements of our wonderful, custom interiors can also be sourced from recycled and renewable materials. From hemp composite to recycled fabrics -it’s all up to the owner.

Sunreef says its new Eco Explorer 40m can accommodate 10 guests aboard, who can be taken care of by a crew of seven. Its motors deliver a cruising speed of 10 knots and a top speed of 14 knots. Build times are currently three years, and the electric yachts will be built at one of Sunreef’s ports in Poland or the UAE.

Based on Lagoon’s Seventy 7 model, the newcomer was built in Bordeaux, France. The cat features six generous staterooms for up to 12 guests and cabins for four crew. Ponant says seafarers can expect personalized service, including a private chef, tailored activities, and other high-end touches.

 “The concept and design of this Lagoon Seventy 7 yacht has been praised by everyone in the industry, won over by the spacious interior and exterior areas,” Guillaume Le Brec, the experienced skipper in charge of this project at Ponant, said in a statement. “Guests will really appreciate the high-end finishings as much as her exceptional sailing qualities.” 

Furthermore, the itineraries are completely customizable, too. The inaugural seven-night roundtrip voyages from Bonifacio can be tweaked to the traveler’s interests, with the captain offering recommendations. After a stint in Corsica, Spirit of Ponant will cruise around Mahé, a.k.a. the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, for the winter season.
