Trendlyne’s Remarkable Journey: Growth, Expansion, and Innovations in the Fintech Landscape

CXOToday has engaged in an exclusive interview with Mr. Paban Pabreja, Founder and CEO at  Trendlyne 

• Tell us about the growth and expansion plans of Trendlyne.

Trendlyne has seen phenomenal growth. In the B2C segment, It has more than doubled its MAU, sessions, and page views in the past 12 months. Trendlyne also services more than 700 Million APIs per month from its B2B customers.

We have launched 2 new products in the past quarter –  Starfolio  which is a basket investment product and  Stock Reports  – real-time stock reports in PDF format for the first time globally.

Trendlyne is also set to launch its services in 3 new geographies by the end of this year.

• How can Starfolio help the masses?

Investor needs can be quantified into five categories – Research/Analysis, Tracking, Alerts, Trade Execution, and Advice.

While the Trendlyne platform takes care of the first 3 – Analysis, Tracking/Monitoring and Alerts, Starfolio completes the loop by providing a framework to execute trades and seek advice on the platform.

DIY investors can make their own baskets from Analysis tools like Screeners, Watchlists, Superstar holdings. We are onboarding multiple RAs and RIAs on Starfolio so that people can get advice on the same platform.

• Kindly share your views on the growth of fintech brands in India’?

Fintech is a pretty young space in India, and there’s a lot of room for growth. We have seen a lot of startup activity in payments, lending and stock trading – brands like PhonePe, PayTM, Groww and others are young but already quite iconic. I think what is also now happening is a deepening of the ecosystem, as users and investors in India get more savvy – the use of analytics tools, DIY platforms and others which integrate and build alongside big transactions players like brokerages, banks and payment apps.

• How Trendlyne helps people to invest in correct and profitable stocks?

We are a stock analytics company that caters both to B2B and B2C (business-to-consumer) customers. That has been our identity from the start.

The first product we launched was  stock screeners . With this, you can screen stocks using system queries. You can build your own screeners as well. Then we launched the DVM (durability, valuation and momentum) stock score. This basically gives a score for every stock across financial quality, valuation and momentum.

The Indian market has a lot of news and tips. But how does a retail investor get enough time to scan a stock in detail— look at the financials and the management, check if there have been auditing issues, or if the valuation is too expensive. So, we have tried to give this information based on these three scores on top, to help the investor make an independent assessment.

This has proved to be extremely popular with users, because not only does it help one find stocks with a potential upside, you can also avoid investing in stocks with a sharp downside risk. For example, there are many startups that have listed recently . Their scores clearly show that these are extremely loss-making ones. There is no manual interference to these scores and it’s completely automated, rule-based scoring.

Our business model has been to build analytics products that have a clear moat in the market. For example, we are the only player in India that does back-testing on a query level. So, you can write a query for a screener, saying I want to look at stocks having a certain revenue and profit growth, and run a screener and then back-test it to see if it has actually performed well, historically.

Our ‘ Alpha alerts ’ have also proved to be quite popular. You can set real time alerts on corporate announcements, bonus splits, target prices, superstar investors buying stocks, etc. A lot of unstructured and structured data is part of our alerting mechanism. What is unique about alpha alerts is their sheer range.

5. What makes Trendlyne different from other stock investment platforms?

• Breadth of products : Investors aren’t siloed, but products available to them are. Investors need a breadth of products and features on the same platform. Trendlyne has stock scores, proprietary SWOT, screeners, backtesting, realtime alpha alerts, realtime portfolio analytics and stock reports Trendlyne covers Stocks, MFs and Futures and Options – all 3 segments.
• Wide variety of data feeds – structured and unstructured:  We build our own data feeds and that makes us somewhat unique in the market. We don’t just take data feeds from financial market data vendors We are able to provide alerts based on unstructured data. For example, you can set a real-time alert for results declared where the net profit growth has been greater than zero for all your portfolio watchlist stocks.
• B2B + B2C segments:  While other companies in this space have remained either B2B or B2C. Trendlyne is equally successful in both segments.

On The B2C front Trendlyne is vistied by over 15 lakh users on a monthly basis.

• How do you see rise of AI in Fintech space?

Current versions of AI are great at doing text analysis. Whether it be summarizing 100 page reports into concise summaries or evaluating sentiments of the reports or earnings calls or other corporate announcements – AI does an excellent job at these tasks. Trendlyne is piloting a couple of products in this area which will ease the research burden for the investors.

AI currently is severely hamstrung with the data part of the analysis. At the core of the GPT like AIs is the algorithm that tries to predict which word comes next. This algorithm fails even at basic math like multiplying two 3 digit numbers. GPT4 has an accuracy of only 59% on 3 digit number multiplication. Only 4% on 4 digit number multiplication and zero on 5×5.

This means that the tables we see on websites and apps currently are there to stay – for now. However, there will be interesting products coming out in the space of textual insights and document search using AI.

Mr. Narayana Murthy

Founder and chairman emeritus.

Mr. Murthy is a globally-respected entrepreneur and founder of Infosys Limited (NYSE: INFY). He founded Infosys in 1981. In 2014, Mr. Murthy was ranked 13th among CNBC’s 25 global business leaders and was listed among the ‘12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time’ by Fortune magazine in 2012. He received the Legion d’honneur from France, CBE from Britain and Padma Vibhushan from India. The Economist ranked him among the 10 most-admired global business leaders in 2005. He is the first Indian winner of Ernst and Young’s World Entrepreneur of the Year award. Currently, Mr. Murthy serves on the boards of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey and the United Nations Foundation. He has served on the boards of Ford Foundation in New York, HSBC and Unilever in London.

MD Ranganath

Mr. Ranganath has over 32 years of experience in the Global IT services and financial services industry. He is currently Chairman of Catamaran Ventures, a global investment management firm which plays a key role as a catalyst in venture capital, private equity and public markets. As Chairman, Ranga oversees the effectiveness of the firm’s investment strategy, governance processes and alignment with the firm’s vision. He was Chief Financial Officer of Infosys Limited, a globally listed corporation, till November 2018. During his tenure of 18 years at Infosys, he was an integral part of the growth and transformation of Infosys and effectively played leadership roles in a wide spectrum of areas such as Strategy, Finance, M&A, Consulting, Risk Management and Corporate Planning culminating in the role of Chief Financial Officer and worked closely with the Board of Infosys and its Committees in formulating and executing its strategic priorities. In the years 2017 and 2018, Mr. Ranganath was the recipient of the Best CFO Asia award in the technology sector, by Institutional Investor publication, based on a poll of buy side and sell side investor community. Prior to Infosys, he worked at ICICI Limited and executed responsibilities in corporate credit, treasury, equity portfolio management and corporate planning. Mr. Ranganath is a PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad. He holds a Master's degree in Technology from IIT Madras and a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the University of Mysore. He is a member of CPA, Australia. Mr. Ranganath is an independent director on the board of HDFC Bank and on the board of Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. He is a member of CII corporate governance council and GIFT city’s advisory committee on funds management.

Deepak Padaki

As President of Catamaran, Deepak is responsible for driving the overall performance of the firm’s portfolio by formulating and executing its investment strategy, asset allocation, operational and risk management policies and processes. Deepak has over 30 years of experience in the global IT services and software product industry. He was Executive Vice President, Group Head of Strategy, and Chief Risk Officer at Infosys Limited (NYSE: INFY) until June 2022. He played various roles at Infosys – including strategy, M&A, venture funding, risk management, business development, software engineering, and project management. Deepak was a member of the board of Infosys’ software subsidiaries in Israel, the Netherlands, USA, Japan, and India. He was the Vice President of the Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce, a lead member of the start-up and knowledge management councils of the Confederation of Indian Industry, and a member of the strategy and risk officers’ councils of the World Economic Forum. In his spare time, he is active in community theatre. Deepak holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from the University of Mysore, India.

Rounak agarwal.

Rounak joined Catamaran in 2012 and leads the firm's public markets portfolio. He has worked as an analyst across all asset classes at Catamaran. As part of a secondment, Rounak played a leading role in the sales organisation of an associate company that provides automation products and services to Fortune 500 companies. Before joining Catamaran, Rounak was a sell-side analyst tracking the banking, financial services and insurance sector for CRISIL (Irevna) and Standard Chartered. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Sheetal Bhat

Sheetal joined Catamaran in 2011 and works closely with the firm’s strategic partnerships and private equity portfolio, participating in key investment, strategic and operational decisions. She also oversees the finance and compliance function at the firm. Before joining Catamaran, Sheetal was a research analyst at Goldman Sachs covering the India banking, financial services and insurance sector. She also completed a brief stint as a research consultant at Song Fund. Sheetal is a Chartered Accountant rank holder and a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Karthik Swaminathan

Karthik joined Catamaran in 2016 and works on investment opportunities across all asset classes. Before joining Catamaran, Karthik worked at MXV Consulting and HSBC’s investment banking division. Karthik completed his MBA from IIM Indore, where he was a gold medalist, and holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from BITS Pilani, Goa.

Jennifer O'Brien

Jennifer joined Catamaran in 2020 and works on global investment opportunities across asset classes. Before joining Catamaran, Jennifer led business development at Soroco, a Boston-based enterprise AI company, and co-founded Scroll.in, one of India’s largest digital-only media companies. Jennifer holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a master’s degree from the University of Cambridge.

Udit Bokaria

Udit joined Catamaran in 2016 and works on investment opportunities across asset classes. Udit has also worked as Head of Operations as part of a secondment to a Catamaran portfolio company. Before joining Catamaran, Udit worked as a high-yield and junk bond analyst at Goldman Sachs. Udit completed his MBA from IIM Indore and holds a bachelor’s degree in technology from IIT Kharagpur.

Chirag Jain

Chirag joined Catamaran in 2020 and works on investment opportunities across asset classes. Before joining Catamaran, Chirag worked as an equity analyst at Goldman Sachs. Chirag completed his MBA from IIM Calcutta and holds a bachelor’s degree in electronics from BITS Pilani, where he was honoured as the top graduating student in his batch.

Suraj joined Catamaran in 2022 and works on investment opportunities across asset classes. Before joining Catamaran, Suraj worked as an analyst at Kotak Investment Bank (Technology, Media and Telecommunications division) and Data Scientist at Anheuser-Busch InBev. Hetvee Marviya

Hetvee joined Catamaran in 2023 and works on investment opportunities across asset classes. Before joining Catamaran, Hetvee worked as an investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley. Hetvee holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from IIT Bombay, where she was among the top 10 graduating students in her batch. She is an avid swimmer and always up for hitting the dance floor.

Gerin valamchery.

Gerin joined Catamaran in early 2020 and leads finance, compliance and internal reporting. He is also actively involved in portfolio monitoring and analysing investment performance. Before joining Catamaran, Gerin worked at Infosys for over 11 years where he steered a team of 30 chartered accountants managing the finance operations of a FTSE 100 private equity client with an AUM of £13bn. Gerin is a Fellow Member of ACCA, UK.

Shruthi joined Catamaran in 2012 and is responsible for accounting, audit, statutory compliance and investment operations. Shruthi holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Bangalore University and has completed her Chartered Accountant Intermediate.

Varsha Prakash

Varsha joined Catamaran in 2019 and supports the team’s accounting, audit, statutory compliance and investment operations. Varsha holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Bangalore University and has completed her Chartered Accountant Intermediate.

Pooja Prabhu

Pooja Prabhu joined Catamaran in 2016 and executes functions across accounts, audit and statutory compliance. Pooja holds a master’s degree in commerce.

Lokamba joined Catamaran in 2022 and is responsible for accounting and finance.. She is actively involved in audit, statutory compliance and monthly reporting. Lokamba holds a masters degree in business administration and has work experience in finance for about 15 years. She is a singer and has previously worked as a RJ.

Chief of Staff

Ag panduranga.

Panduranga, or Pandu, has been working with Infosys since 1990. At Infosys, he served as Mr. Murthy’s secretary from 1994 to 2014. He continues to directly support Mr. Murthy at Catamaran. Further, Pandu oversees all operational activities at Catamaran including facilities, infrastructure, systems and processes.

Ganapathy TB

Ganapathy is an ex-serviceman who has rendered 17 years of service in the Indian Army. After an early retirement from the Army he joined Infosys in 1998 and was responsible for physical security until 2014. Since then, he has been the Head of Physical Security at Catamaran.

The  Portfolio analysis  feature gives you several insights into parameters like consolidated benchmark performance, statistics, top gainers & losers, and top earnings & valuation stocks of  your portfolio.

What does ‘Consolidated Performance’ do?

Consolidated Performance calculates the  aggregate performance  of your portfolio stocks against  Nifty 50 . It also shows consolidated portfolio value, stocks portfolio value, MF portfolio value, day change, and unrealised gains. 

What is the ‘Statistics’ feature?

The  Statistics feature  provides you with statistical data on profit growth, price to earnings, price to book, and dividends shown as percentage change (%) as compared to the  Nifty 50  benchmark.

Statistics  is also useful to find out  whether your portfolio stocks increased or decreased against the benchmark, as shown below.

Identifying the ‘Top Gainers and Losers’ in your portfolio

Top Gainers and Losers  feature shows you portfolio performance on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. You can generate data for your stock holdings or mutual funds, as per your choice.

VIVA Yacht – Incredible $175 Million Superyacht

VIVA yacht is a masterpiece built by the renowned Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects , a Netherlands-based yacht designer, in their Kaag shipyard.

She was built in 2021 and is considered one of the largest motor yachts in the world that can accommodate up to 14 guests in luxurious comfort and 18 crew for excellent service. 

This majestic 308-foot superyacht is considered to be the first in a line of future luxury yachts that also focus on significantly reducing its carbon footprint by running on diesel-electric power.

According to the AIS data , she is currently sailing under the flag of the Cayman Islands.

VIVA yacht interior

The VIVA yacht is a luxury yacht with an emphasis on environmentalism. Her design was penned by Peter Marino featuring “great edifices” of glass, including floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for natural light and ventilation throughout the interior spaces.

Marino’s theme for this superyacht is an open beach house style with a touch of minimalism clearly shown in the design’s abundance of clean lines.

VIVA Yacht specifications

The VIVA yacht is a stunning 94-meter-long luxury yacht with an incredible 13.6m beam and a volume of 2999 gross tonnage, making it one of the largest yachts in its class.

Her water tanks can store around 71,000 liters of fresh water that the guests can use. 

The yacht is powered by twin MTU engines with a maximum speed of 20 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots, and a range that extends over 5k nautical miles. She is also equipped with at-anchor stabilizers to provide exceptional comfort levels. 

She is hailed as the most environmentally-friendly luxury vessel of its kind because of her eco-friendly waste treatment plant and heat recovery systems on board. 

She has been installed with an exceptionally advanced hybrid propulsion system to keep the environmental impact at around the same levels as his previous Feadship, despite that being 32 meters shorter in length.

VIVA yacht price

Her price is $175 million and her annual running cost is at around US$ 17.5 million yearly. She is currently not believed to be for sale nor available for private charter.

As a private yacht, little is known about her owner who is a billionaire and features his initials on the helicopter register N702FF.

VIVA: The $250 Million Superyacht Of UFC Owner Frank Fertitta III

From his current position as CEO of Station Casinos to how he – alongside brother Lorenzo and childhood friend Dana White – transformed the UFC into a multi-billion-dollar promotion , there’s virtually endless information about how Frank Fertitta III made his fortune. How he chooses to spend said fortune, however, is a little more mysterious (at least for the fun stuff). One such indulgence we know the elder Fertitta brother has treated himself to is the ultra-luxurious Feadship-built superyacht known as Viva, which comes with an eye-watering price tag of US$175 million / AU$252 million.

Conceptualised by Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture in collaboration with De Voogt Naval Architects, while also showcasing interiors accomplished by Peter Marino, Viva was only completed in the Netherlands last year and delivered shortly thereafter.

Back to the matter of Viva, it boasts an overall length of 308 feet / 94 metres with a 13.6-metre beam and gross tonnage of 2,999 – making it the 85th largest superyacht in the entire world; seventh largest ever constructed by Feadship – and can comfortably accommodate 14 guests across seven cabins alongside a capable crew of 18.

Viva has been called the “most environmentally-friendly luxury vessel of its kind” due to it featuring a hybrid propulsion system that allows the boat to cruise using diesel-electric power, as well as a waste treatment plant and heat recovering systems.

If you’ve arrived or departed from the island by boat over the past few days, you couldn’t have missed the gargantuan visitor lurking just offshore.

The 308-foot superyacht Viva was moored off Nantucket earlier this week, just outside the jetties, as the massive vessel was too large to navigate into the harbor. It departed for Martha's Vineyard Wednesday night.

The $175 million Viva, which was built by Feadship in the Netherlands and completed just last year, features its own helicopter which has been spotted circling around the island this week. It is the 85th largest superyacht in the world, and is believed to be owned by billionaire Frank Fertitta III , the CEO of Station Casinos in Las Vegas and founder of Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The yacht’s helicopter sports the tail number N702FF, which was believed to have been chosen for Fertitta’s initials.

"That's definitely one of the biggest vessels I've seen around Nantucket in my 20 years here," Harbormaster Sheila Lucey said on Wednesday.

The yacht has been called the “most environmental-friendly luxury vessel of its kind” as it features a hybrid propulsion system that allows the boat to travel at 12 knots under diesel-electric power, as well as a waste treatment plant and heat recovering systems on board. Its annual running costs are reported to be in excess of $17.5 million .

Viva has a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. Among its many amenities are a cinema, a beauty salon, a gym, and, of course, a helipad on the upper deck.

Following its construction in the Dutch shipyard, the massive yacht had to squeeze through narrow canals to make it out to sea, as documented in these photos shared by CNN last year.

Dmitry Korchak (born February 19, 1979 in Elektrostal/Moscow Oblast) is a Russian tenor and conductor.

Korchak received his musical education at the Moscow Choral Academy. In 2004 he won prizes at the “Francisco Viñas” International Singing Competition in Barcelona and at the Plácido Domingo Operalia International Competition in Los Angeles.

As a singer he has appeared at La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, the Paris Opera Bastille, London’s Covent Garden and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has collaborated with artists such as Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Plácido Domingo, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta and Kent Nagano.

From 2017 to 2020, Dmitry Korchak was Principal Guest Conductor at the Novosibirsk Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, where he directed his own festival, and Guest Conductor at the Mikhailovsky Theater in Saint Petersburg.

Korchak has made several guest appearances at the Kissinger Sommer, the Salzburg Festival and the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, where he also worked as a conductor. Korchak also worked with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

 “Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.
