The Benson Ford offers visitors the majestic atmosphere of an old-world shipping vessel with the convenience of modern amenities. Original black walnut wood and brass fittings place this luxurious vacation home into a category all its own.

Towering over the rocky cliffs of the island and jutting out into the lake, it’s a marvel to be viewed. The Benson Ford Shiphouse has been featured on MTV Extreme Cribs, Home & Garden TV’s Extreme Homes, the Travel Channel, The British Daily Mirror, Ohio Magazine, The National Enquirer, and in countless local publications. A Put-in-Bay landmark, the shiphouse alone makes a trip to the Lake Erie islands worthwhile.”

The Benson Ford Shiphouse sits upon a cliff at Put-in-Bay island in Ohio overlooking the beautiful waters of Lake Erie and the Lake Erie Islands. This unique home was once the forecastle of a cargo ship created for the Ford Motor Company in 1924. The ship was named after Henry Ford’s grandson and some rooms of the ship were personally designed by Henry Ford himself for his own use. The Ship spent over 50 years of service hauling iron ore, logs, and coal around the Great Lakes.

After being decommissioned in December of 1981, the ship was renamed The John Dykstra II so that the original name could go to another ship in the Ford ship fleet. The ship was then stripped of the engine and all salvageable parts before being sold to Frank J. Sullivan. Sullivan then had the ship towed to a dock on the Cuyahoga River where it sat untouched for nearly two years.

On July 18, 1986, Sullivan decided to have the forecastle of the John Dykstra II removed and transported by barge to South Bass Island, A.K.A Put-in-Bay. His idea was to turn the 7,000 square foot forecastle into a four-story summer home for him and his family.

In 1992, Sullivan petitioned The Put-in-Bay Township Zoning Board for the retired freighter to be converted into a bed and breakfast on the island. After a lengthy legal battle, it was determined that this vast houseboat could not be used for this purpose.

Soon after, in September of 1999, Frank J. Sullivan decided to sell the shiphouse, which was auctioned off to the current owners, Jerry, and Bryan Kasper.

This unique home is now a magnificent getaway with the most breathtaking and scenic views of Lake Erie.

The massive 7,000 square foot vacation home is fully equipped with five bedrooms, five full baths, a full kitchen, dining room, family room, a garage, a pilothouse, and more. The original walnut-paneled staterooms keep the authentic ship feel throughout the lake house that makes you feel as though you’re on a luxurious maiden voyage across the Great Lakes.

The shiphouse is a great attraction for a family road trip to put-in-bay. It is reachable by a golf cart rental and has some of the most breathtaking views on the island. The shiphouse was featured on multiple tv shows such as MTV Extreme Cribs, Home & Garden TV’s Extreme Homes, The Travel Channel, The British Daily Mirror, and more.

Just a short drive from Cleveland and Toledo, The Benson Ford shiphouse is now known on the island as one of the most interesting houses on Put-in-Bay.

Put-in-Bay Yacht Club – The Islands Social Boating Club

The Put-in-Bay Yacht Club is just a short walk from all the downtown Put-in-Bay Attractions , which makes docking there convenient. Situated next to Squaw Harbor, the yacht club is near the Put-in-Bay Winery , the Boardwalk, and Topsey Turvey’s . The downtown nightlife is only a short walk away.

The yacht club also regularly hosts a series of special events, including picnics, parties, cruise outs, and numerous other social functions. The entire club has a friendly, lively feel to it. You can join the club for just $295/year. Members enjoy the use of the well-appointed docks, facilities, and make friendships and connections with other members to last a lifetime.

The History Of The Put-in-Bay Yacht Club

The Put-in-Bay Yacht Club is one of the oldest on Lake Erie. It began as the Put-in-Bay Yachting Association in 1886. The main goal was to promote the Inter Lake Yachting Association or ILYA. Valentine Doller, one of the founders of Put-in-Bay, and an important Put-in-Bay entrepreneur, served as the first commodore.

The ILYA holds regattas for children and adults every summer. The organization would meet at various boathouses throughout South Bass Island until they bought the Bay View Home in 1923 from Jack J. Day. A new clubhouse and dock were then contructed. The pavilion immediately became a popular spot for social functions. It was short lived however as winter ice and rising waters eventually ruined the structure.

Post World War II, an cottage owners began vacationing and building homes on Put-in-Bay. With and increased interest in resurecturing the club, a ladies auxiliary formed in 1949 to assist with the revitalization. In the 1950’sSailing and swimming programs were then added. Soon thereafter a galley and shower facilities were added. The club house continued to grow throughout the 20th century. In the 1980’s a major renovation took place.

The Put-in-Bay Yacht Club Schedule

One of the centerpieces of social life at the Yacht Club is the weekly Friday Dinners. The tradition began in 2001. Each Friday from 6 – 8, members meet to prepare meals for the members. Dinners range from spaghetti to Lake Erie Perch Fry. It’s an excellent opportunity for members to meet each other and trade boating stories and what happened over the winter months.

Crusie Outs, Swimming classes, and the summer Sailing Series are just a few of the events The Yacht Club hosts during the week. Social activities include Martini Nights, Taco Tuesdays, Blood Mary Sundays at the Bayview Bar, and hosting several popular regattas. The lounge/bar in the club will generally have one of the popular area teams in numerous sporting events on TV for the members’ enjoyment.

Island fundraising events are frequently held at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club as is the occasional wedding. The Yacht Club is currently working on raising funds for much-needed improvements to the facility. Members are encouraged to donate funds as well as equipment such as playground items, kitchen mats, and help with rebuilding the fireplace.

Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, in conjunction with the ILYA, also sponsors the regattas that take place each year in late July and August. The Power BoatRegatta brings powered boats of all types to the island for several days of organized fun and activities. This is followed by the Junior Sail Regatta, Deep Water Sailing Races, and the Senior Sailing Races, which have been held on Lake Erie waters for over 100 years. The dates and times for these may all be found on the Put-in-Bay Schedule Of Events

Put-in-Bay Yacht Club History

The Put-in-Bay Yacht Club is one of the most senior on Lake Erie. Starting as the Put-in-Bay Yachting Association in 1886, their primary objective was to encourage the Inter Lake Yachting Association or ILYA. Valentine Doller, an influential Put-in-Bay businessman, was the first Commodore. The ILYA holds regattas for children and adults each summer.

The society would meet at different boat houses throughout the island until they bought the Bay View Home in 1923 from Jack J. Day. They constructed a brand new clubhouse and boat docks. The pavilion was instantly a favored location for social events. Regrettably, ascending waters and winter ice ultimately overpowered the docks.

After World War II, many cottage lessors began holidaying on Put-in-Bay. Due to an expanded interest in revitalizing the club, a ladies’ auxiliary was formed in 1949 to aid with the resurrection.

Swimming and Junior Sailing classes were added in the 1950s, along with shower and extensive kitchen facilities.

The club continued to thrive throughout the 20th century. In the 1980s, a major renovation took place, giving us the structure we see today.
