UAE YACHT MANUFACTURING HUB

UAE STRENGTHENS POSITION AS YACHT MANUFACTURING HUB AS COUNTRY’S USD 61 BILLION MARITIME INDUSTRY EXPANDS The UAE is set to build on its position as one of the world’s leading international yacht manufacturing hubs as local manufacturers expand their operations, international developers relocate and the maritime industry expands with coastline developments, according to industry experts. The UAE currently ranks ninth in the world for superyacht manufacturing, with 15 projects under development, according to the 2015 ShowBoats International Global Order Book. Local and international manufacturers are set to announce a slew of new projects for the UAE at the 23rd Dubai International Boat Show. The region’s leading leisure marine event, taking place from 3-7 March of 2015, will have boats on display worth AED 1 billion according to the organisers, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). Dr. Khalid Al Zahed, Vice Chairman, Dubai International Marine Club Board, said: “This year’s Dubai International Boat Show will reaffirm Dubai’s status as a leisure marine hub. As the water-based lifestyle becomes increasingly popular in Dubai, we will see this sector continue to expand and grow in the future. Dubai’s commitment to excellence in everything it does will drive the marine industry to achieve new heights and bring more visitors to the city.” According to the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries (DCMMI), the total UAE maritime industry is worth more than USD 61 billion, with 386 boats above 24m built in 2014, up 8% on 2013. The fleet of yachts in Dubai has doubled since 2009 and the DCMMI predicts the creation of a national classification society – Tasneef – and the introduction of the world’s first code governing private yachts, the UAE Yacht Code, will boost the industry’s future development. Boat builders expand manufacturing activities in UAE Boosting Dubai’s position as a global maritime hub, Comar Yachts, which has produced more than 6,200 yachts to date, will relocate some of its production facilities from Italy to the UAE. The company aims to manufacture locally around 100 catamarans and powerboats per annum in the 26-46 foot range, as it looks to penetrate the wider GCC market and beyond. Comar Yachts will also announce a major global launch at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, with the world premiere of its Comet Power Cat line of power catamarans. “The UAE has the advantage of being a major geographical hub, allowing us to extend our reach not only across the GCC but to India and south-east Asia as well. By moving production facilities here we are able to build boats, reach new markets and attract new customers more economically,” said Marco Liello, Partner, Comar Yachts. “If you look at the success of the regional yachting industry then a lot more shipyards should come to this part of the world, it’s just a question of finding the right place.” Local manufacturers are also expanding activities in line with the growth in Dubai’s maritime industry, which also aligns with Dubai’s National Innovation Strategy aiming to make the UAE one of the world’s most innovative nations within the next seven years. The UAE’s Gulf Craft is investing USD 100 million over the next five years to develop a state-of-the-art facility to build a shipyard for the manufacture of mega and super yachts within the marine district of Dubai Maritime City, a world-class maritime cluster in the heart of Dubai. Named one of the top ten superyacht shipyards in the world, Gulf Craft has played a significant role in cementing the UAE’s position as a yacht production hub, and continues to support developments that build the country’s credibility on the international marine scene. “Dubai has everything in place to become a global maritime industry hub and to be a centre of excellence for the yachting industry – there is a high degree of wealth, a commitment to the water-based lifestyle and the allure of Dubai as a brand that stands for excellence,” said Erwin Bamps, CEO of Gulf Craft. “Regulation and integration of the industry are key to establishing international credibility, and the recent announcement of the UAE Yacht Code is a prime example. With these new regulations in place, which is a first-time globally for private superyachts, the UAE is put on the map when it comes to the production of world-class vessels.” ART Marine, the Middle East’s largest 360 degree leisure yachting enterprise and one of the show’s largest annual exhibitors, is also consolidating its presence in the region with its Oman launch and reopening in Egypt. “We are focused on continuing to forge strategic partnerships and cementing our presence in the countries of the region we believe in, not only for the superyacht market but also for people who want to enter this lifestyle with a smaller, affordable boat. The Dubai International Boat Show is the best platform for us, to announce new projects, new partnerships and the ongoing collaborations with our partners in this ever challenging but promising market,” said Gregor Stinner, CEO of ART Marine. The company will also be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Kleindienst Group – developer of the Heart of Europe at The World Islands, on an exciting yet-to-be-announced cooperation of the two companies at several levels for the unique archipelago, on the second day of the show. Another UAE-based luxury yacht manufacturer, Al Shaali Marine, will unveil its new USD 5.45 million AS100 model superyacht at the Dubai International Boat Show, which it describes as the first of its kind designed and manufactured in the Middle East. “The UAE’s embrace of innovation and best-in-class technology, which has seen it develop in so many other areas, will help it to become the global market leader in the yachting industry,” said Sultan Al Shaali, CEO of Al Shaali Group. “The Dubai International Boat Show will allow us to showcase our offerings to a wider market and help to continue to develop Dubai’s maritime industry.” With potential first-time boat owners set to make up a large number of the expected visitor turnout, the Dubai International Boat Show has ensured a wide range small to medium sized builders will be participating to showcase a range of crafts that also include speed boats, jet skis, quad skis and other marine leisure products. On display are pleasure craft from return exhibitors Delma Marine, Macky Marine and Ocean Boats, as well as boats in the same range from new show entrants Brodie Boats, Dar Al Tawasel Services, Mercan Yachts, Revolver Yachts and Rio Yachts. With over 800 companies and brands from 54 countries exhibiting at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, tens of thousands of visitors, from more than 120 countries are expected to attend. New country participants in 2015 include Djibouti, Indonesia and Luxembourg, while Italy and the USA return as top participating countries, and the event will see 45 global and regional launches over the five days of the show. New and returning show features draw range of leisure marine enthusiasts New show features include dedicated sections for DIBS Sailing, DIBS Fishing, and DIBS Water Sports – industry areas supporting strong sales growth over the last several years as Gulf states increasingly develop planned communities around an active, on-water lifestyle. The DIBS Sailing section is designed as an interactive zone, where enthusiasts – from experienced sailors to first-timers – can see boats, brands, equipment and suppliers from across the globe in a relaxed environment. The DIBS Fishing sector will meet the needs of even the most expert fisherman, allowing them to get specialist technical advice from experts and see the latest technologies and products. DIBS Water Sports is an exciting new show zone dedicated to all related things, from kayaking, canoeing, jet skiing, and paddle boarding to surfing, kite surfing, and wind surfing, with a dedicated testing pool for water sports enthusiasts Show sectors for this year include Marina Display, Superyacht Life Area, Outdoor Display, Marine Luxury and Lifestyle, Equipment Services and Supplies (ESS), with popular show features including the Supercar Promenade and the Retail Village returning to the show. The Middle East Yachting Conference – the region’s largest maritime networking session – will bring together some of the leading industry experts, region’s top boat manufacturers, marina operators, in a collaborative knowledge platform. In addition, Marine Talks will offer leisure marine enthusiasts the chance to glean the latest tips, trends and tricks from experts in fishing, diving, sailing and watersports. The UAE has a strong maritime heritage of dhow construction, ocean commerce, fishing and pearl diving and this tradition has continued with the manufacture of contemporary, state-of-the-art leisure crafts for today’s boating market. The UAE Inspired Pavilion is back again with a range of local small to medium boat builders exhibiting this year. The unique pavilion provides an ideal platform for small-to-medium UAE boat builders to increase market exposure. Dive Middle East Exhibition (DMEX), held in association with Emirates Diving Association, returns with a 42% increase in exhibiting companies and brands. “As the region’s maritime industry expands, and as the UAE consolidates itself as a hub for boating and manufacturing, it is important that the Boat Show evolves and develops alongside it,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President of DWTC. “By expanding the reach of the Dubai International Boat Show into wider areas of the marine leisure lifestyle we can better serve the needs of exhibitors and the desires of our visitors,” she said. The Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) will again unite to represent the world’s most leading superyacht builders, bringing them together in one dedicated platform at the Superyacht Life Area of the show’s Marina Display. Key returning partners include Italian luxury watch brand Officine Panerai, Mercedes Benz and Emirates Diving Association. Bombardier, the world’s only manufacturer of both planes and trains, returns as a Supporting Partner. A vast array of entertainment and show-stopping prizes are available to marine leisure enthusiasts and members of the public this year.

How UAE-based Gulf Craft became one of the world’s leading yacht manufacturers

Helmed by Mohammed Hussein Alshaali, Gulf Craft’s new Majesty 175 conducted its first sea trials earlier this year

Mohammed Hussein Alshaali had a flourishing diplomatic career. The Emirati statesman had already landed career-defining ambassadorial roles to Washington, Geneva and even the United Nations. But it was a very different tide – that of the maritime industry – which would pull this son of a sea captain into a passion project, that would not only build up an entire country’s shipbuilding industry, but would also rise to become a world-class yacht builder in only a few decades.

Back in the late Seventies and early Eighties, when the UAE was just over a decade old, Alshaali, who loved sailing and was posted on stints abroad, purchased a Wellcraft fishing boat from the US and quickly realised the prohibitive costs associated with shipping boats to the UAE. It was all the impetus he needed, along with his brother, to set up their own shipbuilding business – Gulf Craft – in the UAE. “When we launched Gulf Craft in 1982, there was no marine infrastructure or skilled labour force available in the UAE. We were not able to turn to local suppliers for support,” explains Alshaali, founder and chairman of Gulf Craft, recalling the early days in the business.

“Our shipyard is vertically integrated, which means that we manufacture almost all components of our products in-house, with the exception of major machinery. This was borne out of necessity, but became one of our greatest assets as it has allowed us to control each level of our manufacturing process and assure an optimum level of quality.”

Back then, Gulf Craft began with a 218,000-square-foot facility in Ajman where it initially produced 14-foot runabouts for the local market. In 1992, Gulf Craft began to flex its muscle in the luxury yacht market when it launched the Adora 53 motor yacht, and subsequently collaborated with reputed names in the industry including Massimo Gregory to build 77- and 82-foot motoryachts.

Apart from collaborating with external specialists, Gulf Craft parallelly worked on developing its in-house design team. “The Gulf Craft in-house teams are responsible for everything from concept creation, design, engineering, to final production. Apart from major equipment like engines, generators and other machinery, our products are wholly created by us,” says Alshaali.

To understand its scale, consider that today it operates four manufacturing facilities including one in Ajman, a 100,000-square-foot facility in the Maldives and a 462,000-square-foot facility in Umm Al Quwain, the latter of which includes two launching bays.

In 2001, Gulf Craft reached a new milestone with the debut of its first superyacht over 30 metres, the Millennium 118. According to data made available at the start of last year by The Superyacht Agency, Gulf Craft reportedly delivered over 50 30-metre-plus superyachts, at an average rate of 2.8 deliveries per year. Since 2012, it has averaged 5.9 vessels per year, peaking at eight deliveries in 2017.

Last year’s pandemic did throw a gigantic spanner in the works for the manufacturer. “At one point, the global supply chain ceased completely, making it very difficult to receive materials from overseas. Reduced manpower due to social distancing continues to be a challenge,” says Alshaali. “But our operations team worked tirelessly to keep the shipyard up and running throughout the year and successfully delivered two superyachts at the height of the pandemic.”

Demonstrating further resilience, its 53-metre Majesty 175 megayacht completed its maiden sea trial in January this year. The Majesty 175 – along with the Majesty 200 – were announced at the 2016 Monaco Boat Show and it took four years of research and development for the 175 to get here. And arrived it has. “The Majesty 175 is the largest composite production yacht ever built, at 780 gross tons. She redefines the industry’s expectations on what can be achieved using advanced composite materials,” offers Alshaali about the yacht built with carbon fibre and vinylester.

Italy’s Cristiano Gatto Design Studio worked on the interior and exterior design of the 175. It includes seven staterooms and a crew of up to 10 members, with six crew cabins and a private captain accommodation. The star feature though is a 5-metre infinity pool at the forward deck and a hybrid sky-lounge which can be converted into an open sun deck. Massimo Gregory was responsible for the naval architecture of this vessel, which features two fixed-pitch six-blade propellers, twin MTU 12V 4000 M63 engines, each of which are 1,500kW units, and which together allow the vessel to cruise at a top speed of 17 knots. The boat is expected to be ready for delivery this spring, and is already sold to a “prominent UAE businessman”.

Gulf Craft primarily sells under four different brand names – Majesty Yachts which was launched in 2003 and is its superyachts division; Oryx followed in 2006 and offered sports yachts and open cruisers; SilverCraft, first unveiled in 2008, showcases affordable smaller family and fishing boats; and the most recent addition of Nomad in 2015 which throws up options within the long-range adventure cruising space. “Gulf Craft is unique in that we build boats and yachts from 31-foot for fishing for family use, going up to 175-foot mega yachts, and everything in between,” says Alshaali, while adding, “We are very proud to have built over 10,000 boats to date.”

While the ability of Gulf Craft to compete against global shipyards is undeniable, it has, over the last decade, pushed forward an aggressive expansion strategy into international markets including Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean. In 2019, it made a dedicated push into perhaps the most important market of all – the US. The Majesty 140 with which it made its entry at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, won the ‘Best in Show’, vindicating its reputation.

The next generation is being groomed to take the reins. Abeer Alshaali, who also is a board member of the Ajman Media City Free Zone, was recently appointed as the deputy managing director. Gulf Craft is a family business, but the position wasn’t handed to her on a platter. She first served as an executive management officer, subsequently rising up the ranks. “Abeer has been a part of the Gulf Craft family since her childhood. Boating is in her blood and she is fully prepared to fulfil my vision for the company’s future,” says Mohammed.

One of Abeer’s pressing priorities would be to open the European markets to the Nomad and Oryx brands. There will also expectedly be a push towards more environmentally sustainable practices in shipbuilding – the solar-powered Nomad 65 is a step in that direction. “We continue to introduce technologies such as solar energy and electric propulsion, and are committed to focusing on sustainability. We have introduced advanced materials in our production including adding materials such as Kevlar and carbon fibre to our building process,” says Alshaali.

While Gulf Craft has already conquered a milestone with the Majesty 175, there’s a fevered anticipation growing about what the 61-metre Majesty 200 might hold in store.

UAE yacht builder on creating 'floating villas' for the rich in Ras Al Khaimah

Polish company sunreef has made high-end vessels for sporting stars including tennis ace nadal and f1 star alonso, yacht builders establish in ras al khaimah to cater for a new luxury market.

A luxury yacht builder from Poland has begun manufacturing multimillion-dollar boats in Ras Al Khaimah , with the first vessels to ship out by the end of the year.

Sunreef Yachts has built high-end catamarans for more than two decades in its Gdansk factories, with buyers including tennis player Rafael Nadal and Formula One driver Fernando Alonso .

Keen to expand beyond Europe, the company’s French founder Francis Lapp chose the UAE as the base for his first overseas shipyard two years ago.

The shipyard in Ras Al Khaimah has started production of twin-hull yachts and was formally inaugurated on Monday by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

More than 180 staff are employed at the site. The company aims to provide jobs to more than 600 by the end of the year.

“My vision was to make something here – to show that Ras Al Khaimah is the right place for a shipyard, to be closer to Asia and Australia,” Mr Lapp told The National .

“For the future of boating, this is the best place. I did not want to have it all in Europe. To make [vessels] in Turkey or somewhere else was also a possibility. I chose this, this is the right place.”

Crafting luxury

Mr Lapp moved from Poland, his home of 30 years, to Dubai four years ago. He now travels almost every day to the Ras Al Khaimah port to supervise the production of the spacious yachts.

“When I started in Poland in 2002, Poland was not popular for super luxury yachts, only for big ships,” he said.

“We brought luxury to Poland and now we are doing the same in Ras Al Khaimah.”

The Dh100 million ($27.2 million) shipyard will cater to a growing demand for spacious yachts. Construction is already under way on a second shipyard at the site to cope with orders worth $170 million to be delivered over the next two years.

The majority of orders come from Europe, while the company also has clients from Australia, Asia and the US.

The Ras Al Khaimah shipyard will first produce midrange 44 foot to 88 foot catamarans with solar-panelled roofs, with the vessels priced between $1.5 million and $12 million.

The luxury transatlantic 140-foot yachts built in the company’s Polish shipyard cost up to $50 million.

Luxury is seclusion

Often described as floating villas, the boats are tailor-made for each client, with features including walnut wood interiors, granite kitchen and dining areas, master suites with walk-in dressing rooms and private balconies. Storage space can also be added for jet skis and kayaks.

“Luxury is not only to show the boat in front of Bulgari hotel in Dubai,” said Mr Lapp, 66. “Luxury, too, is an island, a place where you are alone.”

He said the boats allowed celebrities and sports stars such as Alonso to steer clear of the public eye.

“He has enough of show in Formula One,” Mr Lapp said. “He wants to go someplace and not be photographed, no press, nothing, to have a nice holiday.

“That’s why people are choosing our products, our catamarans, to go to someplace where you cannot go with normal boats.”

Longer trips, further afield

The time clients spent sailing has increased over the past few years, with people extending their voyages from a matter of weeks to months.

“Now clients stay two or three months on the boat in the summer, bring their family, make a long trip,” said Mr Lapp, who has sailed with his family from Monaco to Dubai.

Polish government officials believe more companies will follow Sunreef’s example and expand operations in the UAE.

The Polish Business Council in Dubai was recently inaugurated, with more companies expected to open in the Emirates.

“I feel proud. It is a symbol of our deepening economic co-operation,” said Ignacy Niemczycki, a senior official in Poland’s Ministry of Economic Development and Technology.

“It’s the first large Polish investment in the UAE and my hope is this paves the way for others.”

UAE is home

Mr Lapp plans to move his family from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah next year, once his teenage daughter heads off to study at university.

“I love Dubai and the UAE. I feel my home is here,” he said.

He wants the shipyard in Ras Al Khaimah to be used to deliver the same vessels as the Gdansk site. “Now our clients are asking us about quality and I say, ‘Yes, for sure, the quality will be the same in Ras Al Khaimah,” he said.

“We will bring this same level of quality of Poland that we did in the last 20 years to Ras Al Khaimah. I do not want to be number two. Every morning my challenge is how – in innovation, quality - how to be number one.”

DURETTI was founded by Dan Daman, a Belgian national, and DURETTI yachts have been initially produced by another shipyard according to the design and supervision of Dan Daman. After the success of the brand in its first years, the decision to establish an own shipyard was an easy step to take. Taking over the management of the previous shipyard as well as the majority of the staff enabled DURETTI to a transition-free production in its new premises.

DURETTI manufactures boats between 22 feet (6.7 metres) and yachts up to 295 feet (90 metres) according to European quality standards in Umm Al Quwain and Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates.

The range from 22 to 42 feet mainly includes fishing boats for commercial and private fishing, whereas the range from 48 feet upwards consists of luxurious motor yachts.

The company's premises in the industrial area of Umm Al Quwain, an Emirate north of Dubai, has an area of approximately 87,200 square feet (approx. 8,100 square metres) and accommodate the offices, the production halls, an own carpentry, several cranes to move the yachts on the premises, storage area as well as the accommodation of the shipbuilders.

Dan Daman’s (Founder & CEO)

Dan Daman’s first word was boat. Dan is the founder of Duretti Boats Manufacturing LLC. He has been visiting and living in the UAE since 1997, thus knowing how expat life works taking into account the customs and traditions of the local people as well as the expats from different countries living in the UAE. He has not only the knowledge to build Yachts up to 25 metres, but is also a keen advocate of incorporating the latest Techniques in the Marine Industry such as using CNC machine tools to mould plugs and vacuum moulds to insert resins in the hulls. His experience covers many diverse areas.

Mohamed Issam’s (General Manager)

Mohamed Issam’s has more than 35years of experience in yachts and Boats manufacturing industry. He started his career as Supervisor. Currently he is working as General Manager in Duretti. He Organize the production of the work, as well as the workforce and resources necessary to do the work. He Participates in the general management of the company operations.

Selva Ganesan’s (DGM)

Selva Ganesan’s Interest in building yachts came at an early age. Hence his decision to become a naval architect of which he succeeded with distinction. After successfully starting his career in a private company being a naval architect in various field such as structural designing of boats, inclining calculations, intermediate between company and government and classification entities, etc he decided to join Duretti to start building yachts practically. Mr. Selva in no time learned this profession and became the DGM for Duretti Yachts in UAE and singlehandedly managed projects building yachts in Bangladesh for Duretti Yachts.

Von Michael Magboo’s (Production Manager)

Von Michael Magboo’s had a diploma in drafting technology. He started his career in the shipbuilding company in the Philippines in 2005 as marine draftsman. In 2011, he moved to the UAE for an offshore vessel project and marine operation as marine designer. He has been involved in Yacht construction from 2014 that makes him interested in the luxury yacht building industry, at the same time he then learned and developed his skills in some aspect of building luxury yacht that makes him capable to take different role in building luxury yacht and being the Production Manager for Duretti Yachts Philippines.

Janine Laxamana’s (Sales Director)

Janine Laxamana’s a Bachelor’s degree focused in accounting, with demonstrated history of working in the Construction Industry for 7 years in Dubai UAE as Purchase Manager, Sales Manager and Business Development Executive. Founded by Ilyas & Mustafa Galadari Group in 2008, IMG Boats is manufactured in a 7442 sq. m. modern factory in Al –Quoz, Dubai by a dedicated workforce of artisans.

The Company’s fishing boats reflect the United Arab Emirates’ proud sea-faring tradition and the life-long boating passion of Ilyas & Mustafa Galadari. Every stage of production is done in-house, the construction process is monitored and analyzed to ensure quality and efficiency.
