How the Spectacular Superyacht Scout is Making Waves

Named for one of her owners’ dogs, Scout is a base from which they can explore the world.

In 2019, over 150 brand-new superyachts were delivered; one of the standout designs of the year was the 209-ft yacht Scout , built for owner James Berwind and his partner, Kevin Clark. Named for one of her owners’ beloved dogs, she is set to be a semi-permanent base from which they can explore the world — canine companions  and all.

The story of Scout begins with a simple napkin. “We started with a sketch on a napkin before interviewing any designers,” say Berwind and Clark. “Our wish list was to have a capable, comfortable explorer to travel the world, and we got a long-range ice-classed yacht with ample crew and guest areas, advanced systems for fuel efficiency, telecommunications and responsible waste management.” From the moment of that very first sketch, the couple was extremely hands on throughout every stage of the build, resulting in an incredibly personal yacht. “During the build we were involved 110%, in every aspect of the project,” they say.

Once they’d developed an initial concept for the yacht, a range of designers were approached, with UK-based H2 Yacht Design eventually being commissioned for both the exterior and interior design. “Jonny Horsfield was a fantastic collaborator; he and his team executed our vision impeccably,” say Berwind and Clark. The decision was made to build at Hakvoort Shipyard in the Netherlands; Scout is now the biggest yacht that the 100-year-old yard has built to date.

Scout ’s fun detailing and a quirky design approach, paired with a contemporary and practical layout, make the yacht eminently usable while still bursting with personality. “ Scout ’s design was influenced by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis , the interiors of Jules Verne’s Nautilus submarine, every James Bond villain’s lair, with a touch of Looney Tunes ,” say Berwind and Clark. “Everything about the interior focuses on the outside views with abundant windows and sliding glass walls.”

Her distinct exterior design pairs hardy explorer capabilities, striking lines and a hint of trawler influence. While this sounds slightly odd on paper, in real life it works in a stunning way. This is a yacht with her own style — inside and out — that turns heads wherever she goes. Distinctive design elements include a high freeboard, exposed tenders in the bow with cut-down bulwarks and integrated forward-sloping windows.

Her gray hull and white superstructure are complemented by playful pops of yellow. “She is a very unique vessel that really captures the owners’ passion for being on the water and their fun outlook on yachting,” says Captain Kynan McDonald. “It’s been an exciting project to be a part of.”

On board the yacht, in addition to her owners, Scout is able to welcome up to eight guests in four cabins, each with its own nautical-inspired theme. The main deck is a focal guest space, with a beautiful main saloon that includes an LCD ceiling that mirrors the outside scenes. Complementing the main saloon is a large winter garden — a social hub that is perfect for year-round use, thanks to frameless glass panels that provide shelter when needed and retract when not in use, plus full air conditioning.

The winter garden space features a cocktail bar for sharing fresh beverages and a dining table for 14; it’s no surprise that this is a favorite spot for hosting. Aft of the winter garden is an intimate C-shaped fire pit that’s ideal for gathering around as the sun sets, with atmospheric flames flickering in front of the horizon.

A beautiful private owner’s apartment is accessed via a library studded with nautical-themed artifacts. The apartment is a stylish retreat with multiple spaces including an observation lounge forward — this characterful space includes a hidden bar area within a globe structure, seating around stone-topped tables inset with constellations and a carbon fiber squid sculpture by British artist Alistair Gibson hanging from the ceiling. The owners’ full-beam bedroom suite has two large bathrooms, walk-in closets and frosted full-length windows to port and starboard.

The master suite leads out to what the owners affectionately call “Puppy Park,” a custom-designed garden area for their two dogs, Scout and Brio, to enjoy. With their pets set to be on board for long stretches of time, it was very important to design the boat with this specialist usage in mind. “The dogs have their own ‘yard,’ all materials on board are pet-friendly, and all access points, such as the gates, scuppers and door sensors, are ‘puppy proofed,’” say Berwind and Clark. This passion for animals also extended to the construction of the yacht itself. “As animal rights activists, we used no animal-based materials — no fur, no hide, no bone, etc. — on board.”

Above the main deck, the bridge deck is home to the modern bridge, which has sophisticated operating systems and comfortable seating for those wanting to watch the captain at work. This deck also features another very personal space — dubbed the ‘greenhouse’ — which has been designed around the owners’ passion for gardening, and includes its own potting shed, sink and gardening equipment.

Outdoors, a favorite spot has proved to be the vast, multipurpose sundeck. “We live up there with our guests and dogs, and we also love the open fore to aft space,” say Berwind and Clark. The sundeck is an impressive open space, even by superyacht standards, with features including an inviting Jacuzzi and sweeping views across the ocean.

A helipad on the foredeck allows guests to arrive and depart in style by chopper, while an impressive crane ensures easy deployment of the vessel’s two 26-ft tenders. A packed lineup of toys and water equipment ensures that Scout ’s guests can enjoy their ocean playground no matter where they cruise. The yacht’s custom limousine tender, built by Cockwells, has been finished in the same color scheme as Scout and can carry up to 10 guests while reaching a thrilling top speed of 37 knots.

While the average superyacht is used for just six weeks a year, Scout will buck the trend, with her owners hoping to spend up to seven months of the year on board: It will be a true home away from home. “We plan to use Scout as our primary home for the next several years and hope to travel extensively wherever, whenever, with safety as a primary concern,” say Berwind and Clark.

“Bucket list locations include the British Isles, the Far East and Hawaii .” With her ice-classed hull, very little of the world will be off limits, and there is no doubt that her owners are set to enjoy cruising on board just as much as they enjoyed the build process. Scout truly embodies the endless possibilities of custom yacht building where, if you can dream it, it can be made a reality.

Billionaire John Berwind superyacht moors in Belfast

  • Northern Ireland

Billionaire's superyacht docks in Belfast.

A $65million superyacht owned by an American billionaire has docked in Belfast.

The Scout is owned by John Berwind. It arrived in Belfast, docking just beside the Odyssey after sailing from Dublin.

Built in 2019 in the Netherlands, the vessel is 63metres long, and styled as a "rugged explorer" style yacht.

It has a crew of 11 and can accommodate 14 guests. It has four guest bedrooms as well as an owner's deck. Other features include a helideck, cinema, gym, three bars as well as an expansive sun deck complete with large Jacuzzi.

The yacht was commissioned by the Heineken family, it is reported before being purchased by Berwind.

It is said to cost in the region of £5m a year to run.

Berwind's family established an American mining corporation in Pennsylvania in the 1800s before moving into manufacturing and real estate, pharma, chemicals and plastics.

The company also includes the TASI Group which controls businesses worldwide including Sepha which is based in Dundonald.

Berwind is an architect and understood to be holidaying in Ireland. He reportedly named the yacht after his beloved dog.

He and partner Kevin Clark use it as a semi-permanent base to allow them to explore the world, it has been reported.

They have dedicated their lives to philanthropy, environmentalism and animal welfare.

Recently the US billionaire Nancy Walton's £300m superyacht docked off the coast of Bangor.

A luxury superyacht moored in Belfast since last Wednesday has caught the attention of the public.

The Scout is a 63 metre vessel owned by the US millionaire James Berwind, part of the family-owned Berwind Corporation.

It’s understood the American businessman has been on an Irish tour with his partner Kevin Clark in recent weeks, with the yacht spotted in both Cork and Dublin.

He also has business interests in Northern Ireland, with Dundonald firm Sepha part of the Berwind Corporation's extensive portfolio of interests.

Billionaire's massive yacht 'headed for Galway' as €80m beast using incognito 'Cool Blue Route'

You'd mistake the owner and his backstory for something off Succession too

The superyacht "Scout" at sea

The latest news headlines from Galway

A mammoth €80 million yacht could be on its way to Galway by following what's known as the Cool Blue Route, having docked in Cork.

The superyacht which is called "Scout" would not look out of place in the hit HBO show, Succession, and it's the first mega yacht to dock in the rebel county, this Summer.

The incredible yacht is currently docked at Castlepark Marina as its billionaire owner enjoys the sights and sounds of Cork.

Measuring it at an impressive 209ft, the superyacht was built in Holland in 2019 for the Heineken family, but has since been purchased by the American James Berwind in 2020 for a price believed to be around €80m.

The yacht can cater for 10 guests along with 14 crewmembers and it certainly has an understated look and design when compared to other superyachts.

Those onboard will be living the life of luxury as facilities include a fully equipped gym, cinema room, 3 bars, and a huge sun deck with a jacuzzi .

What are the chances of the yacht heading north and visiting Galway?

An insider told Galway Beo: "Already been to Dublin, now Cork - if it's following the Cool Blue Route (if you haven't heard about that - worth a story in itself - alternative route for cooler billionaires who want to avoid the crush in the Caribbean/Med) - it will call to Galway next".

James Berwind may not be a name that a lot of Irish people are familiar with but he is an heir to a vast, shared family fortune and with his brothers and sisters, part owner of an international global corporation.

His famous forebears Edward Julius and Charles Frederick Berwind were the founders of the Berwind-White Coal Mining company in America in the 1860s, which became a vast mining conglomerate that it still privately held in a family trust today. It has diversified from mining into areas including manufacturing and real estate. The Berwind Corporation's real estate holdings alone are worth around $3bn.

However, while the family made its fortune in fossil fuels - James Berwind and his long-time partner Kevin Clark have devoted themselves to philanthropy, mostly focused on animal welfare and environmentalism, a path that could hardly be more different from that chosen by his coal-baron forebears.

It's estimated that James Berwind has a personal fortune of around $500 million, Berwin - who is also an architect - and along with his siblings - run the international charity foundation Spring Point Partners, which supports projects and people involved in environmental and community development worldwide.

New leash on life

Northeast Times

MARIA YOUNG / TIMES PHOTO

Crime fighting can be a ruff job for the Philadelphia Police Department’s 23 patrol- and scent-trained K-9 Unit dogs, but duty became a lot safer last week when a local philanthropist donated $22,000 to outfit the animals with body armor.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross and members of the Northeast-based K-9 Unit debuted the new bulletproof doggie vests outside the Roundhouse at Eighth and Race streets on June 8. They presented donor Joanne Berwind with a massive plaque engraved with the names of all of the K-9s and their police handlers.

“The Philadelphia Police Foundation is grateful to Joanne Berwind for her generosity and concern for the safety of the K-9 Unit’s four-footed police officers,” said Maureen Rush, board president for the Philadelphia Police Foundation.

The nonprofit foundation subsidizes supplementary equipment for Philadelphia police that’s not included in the city’s operating budget. Rush, a retired Philadelphia police officer, is vice president for public safety of the University of Pennsylvania and superintendent of the university’s private police force. In the past, the foundation has also bought motorcycles for the police department’s Highway Unit and equipment for the officers and horses of the Mounted Unit.

Berwind is a member of one of the Philadelphia area’s most prominent families. Her late husband, Charles Graham Berwind Jr., was a Berwind-White Coal Mining Company heir and former chairman and chief executive of the family-held Berwind Group investment management firm.

Joanne Berwind is an animal advocate and operates a rescue in Newtown Square, among many other charitable activities. She said she was inspired to make the donation after seeing news reports of police dogs who were killed in the line of duty. Ross noted that the contributions of police dogs have long gone unnoticed by the public.

“They go unheralded in many instances,” Ross said. “These K-9s are hard-working, loyal and would give their lives for the department.”

Capt. Mark Everitt, a former commander of the 7th and 15th Police Districts in the Northeast, now heads the K-9 and Mounted Units. He said that the department has 27 dogs in service who each specialize in one of three disciplines — drug detection, explosive detection or cadaver detection. Most of the animals are German shepherds. Their training takes eight weeks, after which the dogs become family pets for their handlers — in addition to working regular police shifts.

There are at least two police dogs on patrol with their handlers around the clock. Four of the dogs do not have patrol duties, so they do not need vests. Each of the vests was custom fitted. In the past, K-9s had to share their vests. This is the first time in many years that each dog will have his own. The vests have a five-year service life.

The K-9s have many practical uses in narcotics, terrorism, missing persons and homicide investigations. Rush noted that they will have a busy summer with the Democratic National Convention coming to the city in July.

Heir to coal fortune lists Palm Beach estate for $38M

James Berwind wants to sell the mansion as he plans to travel via yacht with his partner

UPDATED, Nov. 15, 1:17 p.m.: A member of the Berwind family that made its fortune in the coal industry is listing a custom lakefront estate in Palm Beach for $37.5 million.

James Berwind and his partner, real estate agent Kevin Clark, built the nearly 10,000-square-foot Bermuda-style mansion at 320 Island Road. It’s now hitting the market with Cristina Condon of Sotheby’s International Realty. The couple is looking to sell the six-bedroom, six-bathroom compound as they plan to travel the world on a new yacht, according to the Palm Beach Daily News.

Berwind, an environmental architect and animal-rights activist, is a son of the late Charles Graham Berwind Jr., the former leader of the Berwind Group. The company was historically involved in the coal industry and later became an investment management firm.

The Palm Beach property includes a two detached two-story guest house, with four-bedroom suites, a boat lift, full-house generator, car lifts in the garages, smart home features, 232 feet of water frontage on Tarpon Cove, gardens, patios, a waterfall and pool.

Dog lover's donation puts Philly's K-9 officers in protective vests

Department's police dogs receive gift of fitted, bulletproof, puncture-resistant body armor.

K-9 body armor

K-9 Officer Spike along with his handler, Officer Callahan pose on the steps of the Philadelphia Police Department Headquarters, June 8, 2016. Spike, along with the entire police dog force in Philadelphia has received bulletproof and puncture-proof vests though a $22,000 contribution from Joanne Berwind.

For the first time in at least 15 years, Philadelphia's entire unit of K-9 patrol dogs will now be looking sharp – and safe – thanks to the donation of 23 sets of body armor by a concerned city resident.

Joanne Berwind, of Philadelphia, who operates an animal rescue in Newtown Square, contributed $22,000 out of pocket to outfit the K-9 units with new, state-of-the-art body armor at a cost of $900-$1,000 per dog, officials said.

"I love these dogs, they are like family," Berwind said during an event Wednesday to unveil the donation.

Captain Mark Everitt, commanding officer of the city's K-9 unit, said four other dogs with the unit are trained to find cadavers or bombs, but do not go on patrol.

According to Berwind, she had recently seen a story about police dogs in Virginia who have died while in service to the community. Hearing about the animals hit her hard, she said, and made her think of Philadelphia's police dogs.

Berwind said she decided to do what she could to protect the department's furriest officers.

"The K-9s are the unsung heroes. They are true first responders... I wanted to do what I could," she said. "They depend on us for their care, protection and survival... They deserve the best."

Dog lover's donation puts Philly's K-9 officers in protective vests

"It's all about passion and compassion," she added. "Our Philly police dogs deserve our support."

Berwind worked with the Maureen Rush, president of the  Philadelphia Police Foundation , to obtain the safety equipment for the police dogs.

In the past, Philadelphia police have been offered a grant for about seven sets of body armor for the K-9 units, but since every dog is custom-fitted, 23 vests were necessary to protect all the patrol dogs, Rush said.

"It's just like a police officer is protected," said Rush. "We need to make sure they have equal protection."

In fact, Everitt said, the body armor for the dogs is identical to the bulletproof vests worn by their human officers. The "flak  jacket-like" sets of body armor for police dogs only last about five years of daily use, he said.

It's been more than a decade since the K-9 dogs had any type of protection at all.

"This will have a significant level of protection that they have not had for 15 years," he said. "If we don't know if a defendant is armed or not, this will offer that level of protection."

Commissioner Richard Ross thanked Berwind for her generosity, saying the K-9 units put their lives on the line every day to protect residents.

"These canines are brave and loyal and, as you can imagine, they would give their lives in service to this city," said the commissioner.

Rush said she hopes Berwind's compassion spurs others to support the police through the Philadelphia Police Foundation.

U.S.: Private-jet pilot took $2.7M from Phila. firm, with credit cards

Berwind's Kevin Boardman accused

UPDATE: Berwind says it reported indicted pilot to the Feds. Kevin N. Boardman, who spent 16 years as Director of Aviation and Chief Pilot for family-owned Berwind Corp., the Philadelphia-based conglomerate that owns Elmer's Glue, BromiCide water treatments and other global brands, used corporate credit cards and phony "front" companies to "defraud" his employers of $2.7 million, starting in 2006, according to a federal grand jury indictment.

"He's presumed innocent. We're in the process of reviewing the paperwork," Boardman's attorney, William J. Brennan, told me. The indictment, handed down at the request of Philadelphia federal prosecutor Zane David Memenger, alleges Boardman submitted "false and inflated invoices" to Berwind for two companies that "never provided" actual services to the company.

Boardman, of Centerville, Del., left Berwind earlier this year, and has been available for work as a contract pilot for Gulfstream 550 and 650 jets, according to a professional notice he posted on a social media account. Those jets, even used models, sell for more than $50 million apiece, according to Gulfstream.

Berwind operates a Gulfstream 650, according to industry sources, and previously owned models 550 and 450. The company has leased its aircraft to associated businesses for a few thousand dollars an hour, according to a person familiar with the arrangements.

UPDATE: Berwind says it reported Boardman to the Feds: "Following the termination of Kevin Boardman, a Berwind Aviation employee, Berwind identified a series of irregular transactions specific to that division and then immediately conducted an internal investigation. As a result of our conclusions, we turned the matter over to the appropriate authorities, including the US Attorney's Office," Bruce McKenney, Berwind senior vice president, said in a statement. "The company has fully cooperated with the authorities and is pleased that the legal process will bring closure to this matter." Berwind didn't answer my queries as to why Boardman was fired or what the company needs jets for.

EARLIER:Coal-mining heir Charles Graham Berwind Jr. built Berwind Corp. into a range of energy, drug-service and manufacturing companies before he died in 2010. The firm also formerly owned real estate and financial groups. Its current businesses employ 4,000 worldwide. Berwind's children who remain active with the firm have kept a low public profile. A separate branch of the Berwind family runs Berwind Private Equity, a buyout firm based in Harvard, Mass.
