Khalilah: on board the golden 49m all-carbon superyacht

When Khalilah hit the water in 2015 she was a sight to behold. Not only was she the largest carbon-composite-built superyacht in the world, with a beam comparable to that of a 70 metre, but she was also gold - very gold.

There is no doubting the hottest topic of conversation in Miami Beach in February 2015. The boat in question was not part of the showcase event but her abstract sculptural quality, her golden pearlescent finish and black radar arch made Khalilah indisputably the star attraction – even tied up at a private home on the Indian Creek Waterway, a stone’s throw from the show. Craft of all sorts milled about as passengers craned their necks for a better look at the golden goddess.

One man was keeping his cool amid all the hullabaloo. Timur Mohamed, owner of American boatbuilder Palmer Johnson , which produced the 49-metre SuperSport Khalilah. “This,” says Mohamed, sweeping a hand towards the huge aft deck by way of explanation, “is what this is all about.”

Her goldness is not what sets Khalilah apart. Nor is the fact that Khalilah ’s the largest private yacht built entirely in carbon composite. Rather, it’s that amazing aft deck, formed by its 11-metre beam. “This yacht has the beam of a 70 metre,” he says proudly.

And Mohamed can rightly feel proud, knowing as he does the amount of effort and the degree of innovation that has gone into creating the SuperSport series. In 2010, Mohamed came across a concept that served as the starting point for a yacht to shake things up, in what he considers the conservative world of yachting. It came courtesy of a designer called Berkeley March, a finalist in BOAT International’s 2008 Young Designer of the Year awards, who had started working for Palmer Johnson.

What Mohamed wanted was a yacht without compromise and, with March’s design, he had it. “We wanted to tick all the boxes of what owners want,” Mohamed says. “The design intent had a clear and bold goal from the start: to create superyachts that did not compromise speed, efficiency, comfort and space. Once we had exterior elements we liked, along with the new hull form, the next [goal] was that design, technology and performance had to be woven seamlessly into the essence of the yacht. We were aiming to capture the hearts and imagination of the discerning and knowledgeable.”

The first designs were produced in late 2011. A contract for the first yacht came a few months later. “It was a high-risk project,” says Mohamed, who admits he likes just this sort of challenge. 

“Innovative is when you change something fundamental,” Mohamed says. And the first SuperSport vessel did just that: a displacement yacht with no fin- or gyro-stabilisers, capable of reaching 30 knots and of providing the space of a multihull. “Thirty knots on a displacement hull simply does not happen,” he asserts. Shortly before heading to Florida, the yacht’s GPS registered 29.9 knots. Further fine-tuning inevitably followed.

Palmer Johnson, founded in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, in 1918 is no stranger to innovation. In the 1960s, the yard began building fast sailing yachts in aluminium. It expanded into the superyacht market, where it carved its niche with alluring and sporty yachts developed in co-operation with Italian design firm Nuvolari Lenard .

It was the company’s SportYacht series, launched in the mid-2000s, that first caught the attention of Mohamed. The first PJ120, Cover Drive , (now Ascari )was built for him. “It’s all part of the PJ story,” he says. “From Fortuna (a 30.5 metre built in the late 1970s for King Juan Carlos of Spain) to the SportYachts to the SuperSport series, PJ has always bred performance yachts with dynamic styling ahead of the market.”

It helps that the builder has like-minded clients. Palmer Johnson built the first SuperSport for a repeat customer who, in 2007, took delivery of another head turner: the golden, Nuvolari Lenard-designed 46-metre named O’Khalila (now Aquanova ). Unlike her predecessor, which was built in aluminium, Khalilah is entirely carbon composite: carbon fibre sandwich and vinyl ester.

Khalilah oozes the best of automotive styling with a soupçon of later-generation Palmer Johnson genes. On the water the 49-metre, despite her wide body aft, is sleek and sporty, with a long foredeck ending in what appears to be a reverse bow. 

Above deck, nothing is revealed: no tenders or cranes, no anchors, winches or mast clutter that foredeck; there is no towering superstructure, as Palmer Johnson eschewed such features many years ago. A wave-piercing element designed to part the water is visible only below the surface. Waves may rise occasionally to the level of side deflectors that also serve as interesting styling elements.

Seen from land, Khalilah offers a very different perspective and reveals her imposing scale. But even as Khalilah towers above, when you stand quayside (she is 16 metres tall from the waterline to the top of the mast), little prepares you for the space that she offers. The aft main deck sits on top of the widest part of the hull, courtesy of two sponsons that are designed to give stability. On closer inspection, these thin appendages have doors built right above them to allow the crew to unload tenders and toys.

Seen from the inside, they expand the storage space significantly. Twin side garages, one with a fuelling station, hold a seven-metre tender and three Jet Skis, and frame a large beach club protected from the elements by a wide glass door. With at least three functions, the sponsons are an integral part of the design and, when Khalilah is at anchor, they contribute to the feeling of space on board.

The aft deck’s size – 110 square metres – is closer to the space you’d expect on a multihull. Compounding the effect of that 11-metre beam, and the almost 12 metres from the transom to the saloon door, is the extensive use of glass, which opens up views everywhere you look. Seated or sprawled on the large outside banquette, or lying on enormous sunpads, you still enjoy uninterrupted views. Shapely railings support glass panels that break the wind effectively but don’t spoil the view.

More glass is inset in the carbon supports framing the main deck’s outdoor dining area, with the largest panes found forward at the main saloon level. “They are the biggest glass panels aside from Steve Jobs 's boat [ Venus ],” says Mohamed. In fact, at the time, they were the largest windows installed on a superyacht in the United States.

Thanks to the slender naval architecture and carbon composite construction (which represents a weight saving of about 20 tonnes, according to PJ’s own estimation), the SuperSport 48 requires relatively modest power to reach her noteworthy top speed of 32 knots. 

The engines are twin 16V MTU diesel M94s from the 2000 series, with a maximum 5,200hp output. As a result, total consumption at top speed is about 1,000 litres per hour. Consumption, says the captain who took the yacht from Wisconsin to Florida via Montreal, goes down significantly with speed. With an extra tank extending capacity up to 41,600 litres, and a consumption of 159 litres per hour, the yacht has a transatlantic range of 15 knots.

To build Khalilah entirely in carbon composite, Palmer Johnson selected a Norwegian shipyard well-versed in the material. Brødrene Aa, which specialises in fast ferries, built the first DNV-approved vessel in GRP sandwich panels in the 1970s and a few well-known yachts marketed under the Norship name, including the 36.5-metre Moonraker , once the world’s fastest yacht, in the early 1990s.

The assembled hull and superstructure, with engines and drives in place, made their way from Norway to Wisconsin in late 2013, and the PJ craftsmen installed the mechanics, electronics, a complex network of lights and built the custom interior to the owner’s requirements.

This owner wanted a simple but playful interior. A spiral of LED lights inset in the ceiling above the entrance foyer, a glass octopus, and low-lying colourful seats on top of wide-beam parquet flooring set the tone. But it is not long before the eyes wander towards the floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the saloon.

PJ’s standard layout calls for a larger main saloon, a galley down and a palatial master suite, sprawling full-beam forward on the main deck. Khalilah has a different layout, according to her owner’s wishes. 

The galley, a contemporary and alluring space with windows, stainless steel appliances and lacquered orange cabinets, looks as though it came from a Boffi showroom but was designed and built in-house. It was installed on the main deck at the owner’s request. Two similar-sized owner’s suites occupy the space forward, benefiting from great views through vertical portholes.

The guest cabins, including a comfortable VIP, are on the lower deck. Each has a different colour scheme, highly personalised décor and beautiful marble and colourful mosaics in the showers. The crew cabins (four twins and one single for the captain) are forward of a pleasant crew mess. A clever use of skylights allows light to stream belowdecks and the space is both practical and comfortable.

The pilothouse, up a few steps from the main deck, mirrors the progressive styling of the yacht herself. The modern bridge at the centre of it all was designed, assembled and built at Palmer Johnson, with control panels from Praxis Automation Technology. The wide windscreen offers a surprisingly good view despite the pronounced slant. A second, smaller helm station, or “skybridge”, is on the sundeck above. 

Modern Edge, an industrial design company based in Portland, Oregon, worked with Palmer Johnson on the design of this stainless steel and GRP console, which fits perfectly with the yacht’s exterior styling and integrates neatly with the Praxis control panels. Wing stations are on fold-out balconies, usually framed by removable stanchions and rails. Like many of this yacht’s design features, they are revealed only on closer inspection.

The yacht does have a forward navigation mast, but it disappears into the bowels of the vessel when not in use. The only indication of something there is the round shape of the teak detail forward of the sunpads. A system brings the mast up from below. Opening the trap and descending a rather steep ladder reveals a massive and perfectly finished mooring room where several crew can stand fully erect to supervise docking operations. Two anchors drop vertically from the bottom of that room, a system the yard chose to avoid unsightly anchor pockets that distract from the styling.

Practicality dictated most of the choices that the yard made on the technical side, from the sound damping material (Dynamat, a product commonly used in automotive and architectural applications) to the fixed Kohler generators and the conventional diesel power plant included. Most, but not all, of course. When you seek to provoke an emotional reaction and create a strong attachment from an owner to his or her yacht, the details count.

The owner of Khalilah clearly has a thing for gold, which is found at the heart of the engine room as a custom finish on the two MTU engine blocks. Gold suggests glamour and confidence but also courage and passion. It took all of that to imagine and build the first SuperSport.

Powered by twin MTU engines, she comfortably cruises at 18 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 24 knots with a range of up to 1,500 nautical miles from her 40,000 litre fuel tanks at 24 knots. Her low draft of 1.9m/6'3" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines.

Onboard Khalilah has a large selection of toys and accessories to keep you and your guests entertained on the water throughout your stay. Take to the sea on a Jet Ski offering you power and control on the water. Additionally, there are three towable toys offering fun and adventure. Another excellent feature are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. If that isn't enough Khalilah also features a Kite Surfer, scuba diving equipment, wakeboards, kayaks, fishing equipment. When it comes to Tenders, Khalilah has you covered - with two tenders, including a 6.85m/22'6" Custom Tender.

Tutti, una volta nella vita, vorremmo salire a bordo di uno yacht di lusso e farci trascinare da sfarzo ed eleganza mentre nel frattempo il mare ci culla. E magari il pensiero vola proprio a quei superyacht dai prezzi esorbitanti ma che non passano di certo inosservati. Come Khalilah , il superyacht di 49 metri completamente dorato , che a vederlo fa venire "l'acquolina in bocca". Varato nel 2015 nel cantiere americano  Palmer Johnson , è ora in vendita ad un prezzo da capogiro proprio in Italia e si trova a Genova, pronto per essere sfoggiato in tutta la sua bellezza dal suo prossimo (e ricco) proprietario. Se si vuole acquistare il megayacht è bene sapere che  il suo prezzo (esorbitante) è di 28 milioni di euro . Uno yacht non accessibile a tutti.

Khalilah: a noleggio per 225 mila euro

Lo yacht, oltre ad avere la particolarità di essere totalmente dorato, è stato realizzato in fibra di carbonio e alluminio e il suo peso è di 490 tonnellate. In termini di grandezza, il suo ponte di poppa ha un’ampiezza di 110 metri quadrati . Passando alle prestazioni, per quanto riguarda la velocità, Khalilah può raggiungere una velocità massima di 26 nodi e inoltre può ospitare un massimo di 12 persone in 5 cabine, escluso l’equipaggio che si compone di 9 membri.

La particolarità della vendita di Khalilah è che esso viene venduto con un tender d’oro personalizzato di circa 7 metri. Un vero e proprio gioiello che però ha un costo veramente elevato e che, ovviamente, non è accessibile a tutti, se non a gente facoltosa. Questo perché il suo prezzo è di 28 milioni di euro, una cifra altissima. Ma c’è una novità: Khalilah può essere anche noleggiato (per il momento) al prezzo di 225 mila euro a settimana.

Il superyacht tutto d’oro, cosi lo chiamano i più diffusi magazine internazionali, Khalilah la spettacolare nave da diporto che presenta aspetti unici che lo rendono una pietra miliare degli yachting di lusso, è stata vista arrivare mercoledì sera da Artemare Club e ormeggiare al molo della Pilarella di Porto Santo Stefano assistita dalla professionalità di Maurizio Schiano di Argentario Approdi. La sua dimensione maestosa e il suo colore oro perlescente, unico e particolare, è stato subito ammirato dalla tanta gente turisti e forestieri che si godeva la serata al portolo fanno subito ammirare.

Quasi 50 metri di lunghezza per 500 tonnellate, il Khalilah è stato costruito nel 2015 nel cantiere americano Palmer-Johnson in sinergia col costruttore automobilistico Bugatti. Il superyacht della serie supersport, vanta di essere o interamente in fibra di carbonio per la precisione CFRP, carbon fiber reinforced plastic e avere un importante ponte poppiero di 110 metri quadri, dovuto in parte agli 11 metri di larghezza della nave, grandezza di superyacht molto più lunghi.  Khalilah raggiunge la velocità massima di 32 nodi pur avendo una potenza modesta con due motori 16V MTU diesel M94, che le consentono di effettuare viaggi transoceanici. Una curiosità, i blocchi dei due motori hanno ricevuto una finitura dorata, testimonianza della passione dell’armatore per il color dell’oro.

Khalilah ha sul ponte superiore lo skylounge, luogo con un’elegante finitura bianca e vivaci macchie di colore dell’arredamento che ha l’atmosfera di un vero e proprio loft contemporaneo, completo di lucernari e poltrone rilassanti chaise longue, insieme alle sue enormi vetrate e, per rilassarsi ancora ha un’intera sala relax, situata sul ponte principale, la quale offre una perfetta atmosfera rilassante in stile Zen. La sala principale interna contornata anch’essa da lunghe vetrate ha pavimenti in rovere e arredi neutri abbinati perfettamente ad appariscenti luci led, sono presenti opere pop art direttamente dalla collezione privata del proprietario. Pare che a bordo la cucina è curata da un cuoco pluristellato degno di fama internazionale. L’enorme ponte di poppa ha uno spazioso beach club, fornito di una favolosa piscina.

Quest’anno il continuo arrivo di centinaia dei più famosi yacht dimostrano che L’Argentario è tornato ad essere una sosta obbligata per lo Yachting internazionale come lo era negli anni dell’indimenticabile amministrazione di Susanna Agnelli e veniva chiamato da tutti nel mondo della nautica “la Portofino del Centro Italia”, come ricorda Artemare Club.

Khalilah, il superyacht dorato fatto interamente in carbonio

Quando è stato costruito nel 2015 nel mondo degli yacht di lusso non si parlava altro che del nuovo Khalilah, il primo yacht al mondo tutto dorato e interamente fatto in carbonio. E ancora quando il superyacht Khalilah arriva in un porto o solca le acque difficilmente passa inosservato ma per il suo costruttore, Palmer Jonhson, la particolarità dell'imbarcazione, oltre la sua doratura unica al mondo, che brilla in modo prezioso, è il fatto di essere il più grande yacht privato costruito interamente in carbonio composito.

Timur Mohamed è il proprietario dell'iconico cantiere di barche americano Palmer Johnson, che ha prodotto il SuperSport Khalilah da 49 piedi e che sottolinea della scintillante imbarcazione "il fantastico ponte di poppa, formato dal suo raggio di 11 piedi". Il progetto del designer Berkeley March, finalista dei premi Young Designer of the Year 2008 di Boat International, è uno yacht senza compromessi con un design unico che non compromettesse velocità, efficienza, comfort e spazio. Khalilah raggiunge i 30 nodi e fornisce lo spazio di un multiscafo. Nonostante il suo ampio corpo a poppa, la linea del superyacht è elegante e sportiva, caratterizzato da un lungo ponte di prua che sembra essere un arco al contrario.

Visto da terra, lo yacht Khalilah svela una scala imponente che nascondono interni magnifici.  Grazie ad un attento studio dell'interno al dettaglio, c'è spazio per dei garage doppi laterali, uno con una stazione di rifornimento, che comprendono un tender di sette metri e tre moto d'acqua; il ponte di poppa misura 110 metri quadrati e si può godere di un panorama mozzafiato sull'ampia banchina esterna semmai sdraiati sui lettini prendisole. Palmer Johnson ha lavorato con lo specialista del vetro neozelandese Glasshape per creare tutte le superfici vetrate dell'imbarcazione che costituiscono "le finestre più grandi installate su un superyacht negli Stati Uniti" e consentono abbondante luce interna ma mantenendo freschi gli ambienti.

Chi lo acquisterà non passerà certamente inosservato. Ovunque navighi. Perché un megayacht di 49 metri tutto dorato si fa notare, anzi – essendo assai bello – ammirare. Il suo nome è Khalilah, è stato varato nel 2015 nel cantiere americano Palmer Johnson, ha più volte navigato come charter (a 255 mila euro a settimana) davanti le coste italiane ed è ora all’ancora al Marina Molo Vecchio di Genova per essere venduto al modico prezzo di 28 milioni di euro.

La struttura

Certo, parliamo di un gioiello del mare, primo della serie Supersport 48M del cantiere americano, realizzato in fibra di carbonio e alluminio, 490 tonnellate di peso complessivo. La motorizzazione gli consente di raggiungere la velocità massima di 26 nodi con una crociera di 18 , ospitando fino a 12 persone in 5 cabine, oltre a 9 membri di equipaggio. Il ponte di poppa ha un’ampiezza di 110 metri quadrati e ci sono quasi 12 metri tra lo specchio di poppa e la porta del salone . Il superyacht viene venduto con un tender d’oro personalizzato di 7 metri e una ricca dotazione di water toys, vedi moto d’acqua, jetpack, hoverboard, wakeboard, kayak, paddleboard e gonfiabili vari.

Quanto costa

Attenzione: per chi non si trovasse in banca quei 28 milioni di euro (più quelli che servono per mantenere una barchetta del genere) ma desiderasse comunque non passare inosservato in questa torrida estate, Khalilah può ancora essere noleggiato a 225 mila euro a settimana.

Anche in Italia è arrivato Khalilah, lo yacht ricoperto interamente d’oro. Quanto costa salirci a bordo?

Era stato avvistato, per la prima volta in Italia, precisamente all’Isola d’Elba, nei pressi del Porto Azzurro. Stiamo parlando dello yacht Khalilah , tutto d’oro e probabilmente uno dei più belli e lussuosi del mondo. E’ stato arrivato nel ‘Bel Paese’ ed è stato visto all’interno del Porto di Livorno , vicino al varco Valessini (dove si trova la Darsena Calafati).

Lo yacht arriva dalla Liguria, La Spezia . Il pomeriggio di lunedì 5 luglio è stato visto per la prima volta e tantissime persone non hanno perso tempo nel fotografare e nel fare video per poi postarli sui propri profili social. Le immagini hanno fatto subito il giro del web.

Anche perché è difficile che un panfilo possa passare inosservato, nonostante i suoi 48 metri. Quello che tutti si chiedono (ovviamente solamente per semplice curiosità) è: quanto costa effettivamente salirci a bordo? Circa 250mila euro .

Se invece qualcuno ha voglia di “ togliersi lo sfizio ” dovrà aprire il portafoglio e sborsare la modica cifra di 28 milioni di euro .

Esattamente un anno fa era stato ammirato in tutto il suo splendore  all'isola d'Elba , nei pressi di Porto Azzurro. Adesso invece il Khalilah, lo yacht tutto d'oro e considerata una delle imbarcazioni più lussuose del mondo, è stato immortalato, come testimonia la foto di Alessandra Fogli, all'interno del porto di  Livorno  dove è ormeggiato vicino al varco Valessini, nei pressi della Darsena Calafati. 

Lo yacht, proveniente da La Spezia, è stato avvistato nel pomeriggio di lunedì 5 luglio e lo scatto è subito diventato virale sui social. D'altronde un natante lungo 48 metri e riservato ai super ricchi non può passare certamente inosservato. Secondo quanto circola in rete, chi volesse passarci a bordo una piacevole settimana, dovrebbe sborsare all'incirca 250mila euro. Se invece, volete averlo tutto per voi senza doverlo condividere con altri "basterà" aprire il portafoglio e staccare un assegno di 28 milioni di euro.

Palmer Johnson 48M Supersport, le caratteristiche

Il Khalilah è il primo della serie Supersport 48M del cantiere Palmer Johnson . La sua lunghezza è di 49 metri, la larghezza raggiunge gli 11 metri e il peso è di 490 tonnellate. E’ realizzato in fibra di carbonio e alluminio. La velocità massima è pari a 32 nodi, può ospitare 11-12 persone e 9 membri dell’equipaggio. Dispone di uno sky lounge e di un beach club. E’ inoltre composto da due master suite, una cabina vip, una cabina doppia e un’altra cabina.

Ma qual è il prezzo del Khalilah yacht ? Come riportato da superyachtsmonaco.com , chi lo volesse acquistare deve sborsare una cifra pari a 28 milioni di euro . Nel caso in cui, invece, lo si volesse noleggiare per una settimana bisogna considerare un costo di 255mila euro .

Quest’estate si è parlato del lussuoso Khalilah yacht in quanto il gigante del mare è arrivato in Italia. Il super yacht tutto d’oro è stato avvistato all’ Elba , all’ Argentario , a Positano e ha fatto tappa anche al Porto Turistico di Roma .
