C&C 115

  • By Tim Murphy
  • Updated: May 3, 2006

Rounding the corner at Gray’s Reef during last summer’s Chicago-Mackinac race, I was in the aft cabin of the C&C 115 prototype when shouts from my mates in the cockpit roused me from what was never destined to be a peaceful slumber.

“Thirteen!” cried the helmsman, his eyes on the speedo. On a boat with 33 feet of waterline, that’s a lucky number, indeed. I rolled out and dashed to the deck for the exhilarating run down the Straits of Mackinac to a podium finish.

It was one of several very happy moments aboard the model that would go on to earn accolades as Sailing World’s Overall Boat of the Year for 2006 as well as Best Racer/Cruiser.

C&C Yachts was founded in 1969 by George Cuthbertson and George Cassian in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. But a fire in 1994 all but ended C&C’s life in Ontario, and in 1998 the folks behind Tartan Yachts bought the name and several molds. From that moment on, C&C’s fate has been intertwined with that of Tim Jackett, the head designer who virtually grew up with Tartan Yachts. Like other recent models, the C&C 115 is his brainchild.

While both Tartan and C&C have historical claims to both sides of the racer/cruiser divide, since coming together under one umbrella, the two lines have been deliberately distinguished. Jackett has tailored the Tartan line toward the cruising end of the spectrum and the C&C more toward the performance end.

Secrets to C&C’s success lie in several strategic choices. The most important of these was the decision to build epoxy boats on a production scale. Epoxy is tricky to work with, but done right, it’s flat-out the best resin with which to build boats: stronger, stiffer, and more resistant to osmosis than either polyester or vinylester. Impregnated, vacuum-bagged, and post-cured in a sandwich with unidirectional E-glass and Core-cell linear-polyurethane- foam coring, these boats start with a top-notch structure. C&C offers four models (the 99, the 110, the 115, and the 121), and Jackett expects to build 40 units of the 115 this year alone.

Another strategic choice was to invest in a facility that builds carbon spars: Every C&C 115 comes standard with a carbon rig. With a tube that’s half the weight of and stiffer than an equivalent aluminum rig, the 115’s weight aloft is markedly diminished, and the boat is that much more stable. The boat’s righting moment at 1 degree is 1,200 foot-pounds.

All of this adds up to a boat with a light-ship displacement-to-weight ratio of 146 and a sail area-to-displacement ratio of 24, based on a 100-percent mainsail and foretriangle. For those who do plan to bang around the buoys, the boat’s IRC rating is 1.07; the PHRF rating is between 63 and 72. What’s it all mean? Fun, that’s what.

Accommodations are simple and elegant–nothing stripped-out here–with a double berth in each end and saloon settees that work as singles. The interior joiner work is finished with a pleasing cherry. A 28-horsepower Yanmar with saildrive quietly delivers ample power.

All in all, you’d be comfortable to take this boat anchoring, but you’d be thrilled to take it sailing.

C&C 115

The nimble c&c 115 offers good value for the racing sailor..

c&c 115 yacht

Ever since they started molding fiberglass production boats, its been possible to win a race in one. Think of Burgoo , a Pearson 39-footer that won the 1964 Newport-Bermuda Race. Then there was Psyche , leader of the Cal-40 revolution (the Bill Lapworth phenoms not only won overall, but took six of the top seven places in the 1965 Transpac). A bit more recently, J/41 Smiles came “off the shelf” to win the old Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC) in 1985. However, over the more than four decades of the fiberglass era, winning big with a stock sailboat has remained the exception rather than the rule. Enter the C&C 115.

C&C 115

The marriage between “hot” racing designers and mainstream builders is hardly new, and some companies today (J/Boats and X-Yachts for example) have done well by developing lines of race boats in which cruising capabilities are almost vestigial. However, the old chestnut, “only one in 10 boats sold ever sees a starting line” seems as valid now as ever. Rating rules have come and gone, one-design has become the new Grand Prix, and the “racers look” is in vogue throughout anchorages and marinas everywhere, but the vast majority of todays new boats, even those styled as racer/cruisers, are not destined to compete.

Bucking that reality is Tim Jackett, in-house designer and CEO at Novis Marine (C&Cs parent company). His designs for Tartan have been performance-oriented, but he welcomes the chance to draw on his lifetime of racing to make the 115 a boat that can and will be raced to the max. Fairport has committed to techniques (machine-monitored wet-out, vacuum bagging, computer-controlled curing, etc.) and materials (epoxy resins and carbon fiber spars among them) in both lines that are born of the custom shops and the top-level quest for strength-to-weight supremacy. The boat, so far, has been warmly received. In the first year, the 115 has sold 45 boats.

On deck, aloft, and below the water, the 115 shows an uncompromising focus on whats fast. Unlike some more Spartan competitors, the boat carries a fully functional cruising interior, but its hard to imagine this will keep the 115 out of the winners circle.

Modern racing boats are more similar than different in hull form. The 115s maximum beam of 11 feet, 11 inches puts it in the middle of other similar boats (see “In Context”). On the other hand, the waterline length (33 feet) gives it a theoretical top-end speed that exceeds all but the largest (the 40-foot J/120) likely competitors. “She is sort of long and lean,” says Jackett. “Her entry is considerably finer than other boats in this class. Her mid-sections are more veed than rounded. That helps with sea-keeping, especially in punching through the sort of short chop that we get on the Great Lakes.” Jackett increased the boats overhang aft “to have less boat in the water and help minimize wetted surface for light air.”

While hardly a radical departure from the raceboat norm, the 115 incorporates its designers best solutions (with computer-aided design, Jackett often tries over 100 iterations) into a conservative, all-around design that takes maximum advantage of how it is built.

The 115s carbon fiber (blade and post) rudder is balanced, elliptical, high aspect, and located as far aft as possible to provide the maximum steering leverage. Retaining control in broaching conditions and maneuvering crisply even at low speeds were the objectives. Our test sail, along with reports from regattas, confirm that those goals were met. The bulbed, 4,200-pound lead keel has a very low center of gravity (achieved in part by attaching the lead casting a foot below the canoe body to a glass keel stub). In addition, the boats generous (39 percent) ballast/displacement ratio, pound-saving carbon spar, overall beam, and pronounced turn in the bilges make it noticeably stiff. It takes 1,200 pounds to incline the boat one degree, a creditable righting moment of 10 percent of displacement. Jackett gave the keel a slightly-raked planform with the idea of minimizing drag (and maximizing acceleration out of a tack).

The 115s mainsail is considerably larger than the fractional (15/16) 108 percent overlapping jib. Despite his worries that in smooth water and light air, boats with big genoas would run away from his design, Jackett has found the sailplan works well: “In worst-case conditions, the boat holds her own, but the majority of the time, she has plenty of power and benefits from this being controllable rather than having to reef or make sail changes.”

C&C 115

Small spinnakers have been an Achilles heel for fractionally rigged racers. Jackett thus gave his design an oversized chute.

The boats deck layout, spars, and hardware are all designed for racing efficiency. An oversized cockpit not only provides room for all of the posteriors and elbows involved in takedowns and spinnaker jibes. It also gives the main trimmer a well-chosen spot forward of the helm where he can work with efficient Harken “gross/fine” sheet controls tools. The helmsman enjoys excellent visibility plus a wrap-around seat and 60-inch wheel. Rail riders should appreciate a radiused rail that takes some of the pain out of hiking. (A full-length toe-rail is optional.) Two hatches, the forward-most sized right to accept a doused spinnaker, break up the foredeck.

The tapered carbon spar promotes better airflow over the main. “Puffs and chop do not affect headstay tension and max energy from the puffs is transmitted to forward motion,” Jackett reports. Barber-haul adjustments that permit varied sheeting angles are a big part of making the most of the boats tall jib. The full racing package includes six winches, any of which can accept spinnaker controls.

Like the C&Cs of bygone days, the 115 looks proportional and balanced. “Slash” portlights offer an aggressive touch, and the open, big-wheeled cockpit is racy, but neither the stem nor stern angle calls attention to itself. What you notice are an effortless transition from house to deck, a pleasingly nimble treatment of the boats hindquarters, and just the suggestion of a hollow between midsection and entry. Belying the comfortable arrangements below decks, the 115 presents a relatively low-freeboard profile. More classic than “in your face,” the 115s appearance seems an expression of its no-nonsense speed potential.

Accommodations

The seeming contradiction between livable interiors and boats that sail fast has long been a fact of waterfront life. However, saving weight by means of composites, innovative structure, and intense computer analysis has helped “built for comfort” and “built for speed” become almost reconciled. Its hard to find compromise and/or sacrifice when you look below aboard the 115. Both fore and aft staterooms are large and private, but both berths will take some getting used to: The taper is severe in the forecabin and clearance over the aft berth is slight enough to make for knee-knocking. Though there is an opening portlight overhead, ventilation aft will not be sufficient. Stowage outboard of the berth seems hardly adequate, but the hanging locker is commodious.

The head/shower-stall compartment is big and nicely designed. Stowage throughout is generous. The galley is well-sited and its L-shaped island affords a good mix of counter space and security for working underway. You would need to modify the interior (grab rails, lee cloths, gimballed table, etc.) to race the 115 offshore, but that sort of racing is not the boats prime mission. For living aboard between day races (or two-couple cruising), the 115s six-berth capability seems right and the saloon seems big enough. The nav station, however, is a bit removed from the cockpit to be ideal for day racing while it is too small to work well as a cruisers nerve center/office.

Taste and tradition are served well throughout the interior. Solid cherry furniture, locker fronts, doors, and fiddles, cherry-veneered bulkheads, and a teak-and-holly sole add warmth. We would have preferred it to be oiled rather than varnished to minimize slipping.

Performance We tested the boat in Coconut Grove, Fla., just south of Miami. Powering out of the channel from Dinner Key Marina to Biscayne Bay, the 28-hp Yanmar diesel saildrive was acceptably smooth and quiet. Once in open water, we were able to put the 115 through a full range of power iterations. At 2,800 rpm, its speed was above 6.7 knots. Maxed out, the boat touched 7.9. Powering created just minimal torque on the helm, The gap between the prop and the rudder, however, gave the boat more forward impetus than wed bargained for when we tried to use the prop wash to kick the stern around and turn her in her own length. Access to three sides of the engine (sited beneath the companionway steps) is straightforward. Even reaching the after side of the powerhead is relatively easy.

C&C 115

We liked the ease with which the main (riding “no-friction,” low-profile slugs in its luff groove) went up. The small jib was a snap to deploy. One of the keys to success on the race course is sailhandling efficiency, but you don’t have to be racing to appreciate sails that are easy to set and handle.

The sparkling morning produced an 8- to 10-knot norther that made us feel more laid-back than fired-up. Still, we took the helm and felt at once a positive, nimble response that moved us to see what the boat could do. Sailing up the breeze in relatively smooth water, the boat kept its pace to less than 30 degrees apparent wind angle. Shooting into the breeze we were amazed at how far the boat carried. (“head-reaching” is a rough test of clean lines underwater.) The 115 seemed to glide farther faster than most of the modern hulls PS has tested.

It was easy to tack through 80 degrees, and it took very little time to accelerate back into a 6-knot-plus groove out of each turn. Spinning the boat was effortless, but the helm was positive enough to let us know when we were over-steering and killing way unnecessarily. Off the wind, we were surprised at the pace (6.7 knots and better) achieved in relatively light air without a big genny. The boat is slippery, and the main is big. Even sailing as low as 150 degrees apparent without a chute, it was surprisingly fast.

Weve had the thought before, but it occurred to us that a boat thats set up to sail fast is a boat thats fun to sail. Far from being overbred or finicky, the 115 is predictable, rewarding, and responsive. To fall back on the oldest of clichs, we found the boats “sports car handling” one of the most attractive things about Jacketts new racer.

Reports from the race-course have all been good: Victories in the Chicago NOOD, Northstar Sail Club Fall Series, and Charleston Race Week signal that the boat goes well in differing conditions. Says Jackett, “Shes at her best in a breeze, but has been able to run away from people downwind in light air. We had a five-boat start at Annapolis NOOD this spring. I think we hit our targets with this one.”

Conclusions

A production boat that delivers “custom” performance, design intensity, and quality is an achievement. At $200,000, the C&C 115 is not cheap for a 37-footer, but combining genuine speed with workable comfort is no mean feat. It comes much closer than most. Given the extremely competitive numbers and initial track record against all comers, this boat appears a racer to be reckoned with. In our estimation, the boat is a remarkable value.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

C&C 115 & Jeaneau Sun Fast 35: Which Comes First, Racer or Cruiser?

  • By Tony Bessinger
  • Updated: June 29, 2005

c&c 115 yacht

C&C 115, Jenneau San Fast 35

Some people make no distinction between cruiser/racer and racer/cruiser. It’s a matter of semantics to them. A dual-purpose boat is a dual-purpose boat. But we’ve always found that some such boats do have a dominant race personality and some have a more cruising nature. When we saw the C&C 115, we were confident it would live up to its racer/cruiser label and the Jeanneau Sun Fast 35, likewise, a cruiser/racer. But while reviewing the boats, we decided to dig into the details of each and see if we could confirm our first impressions. Racer/Cruiser, the C&C 115 Consider the basic specifications of the new C&C 115. The hull is made of E-glass and epoxy with CoreCell core, and reinforced with carbon fiber in high-load, high-stress areas. The vinylester and e-glass deck is cored with Baltek AL 600, and the mast is a 59’9″ carbon fiber, two-spreader design that carries a near-masthead kite and a 110-percent genoa and weighs one-half of what a comparable metal rig would. The rudder is a high-aspect ratio blade, and a lead bulb sits at the bottom of a deep keel. The transom is open and the deck layout is race-ready. While the boat comes standard with discontinuous rod rigging, jacketed PBO standing rigging is available as an option, which adds surprisingly little to the all-up price. Ten years ago, you would have paid top dollar for such a boat, you’d have had to wait six months for a custom builder to build it, you wouldn’t have been able to afford the carbon rig and you couldn’t even buy the PBO shrouds. Lucky for us, C&C is offering the 115 as a production racer/cruiser that anyone with the cash can step up and buy. It’s clear that Tim Jackett, designer and COO of builder Fairport Yachts, has spent a lot of time on raceboats observing how crews get around a racecourse. The result is a well laid-out boat that’s in line with racing ergonomics. Let’s start with the 115’s toerails, which end just aft of the shrouds, look like they actually deflect water, and seem like they’d be great toeholds during breezy takedowns. Best of all, they won’t dig into the underside of your thighs when you’re hiking. Two Lewmar hatches also grace the bow, the forward most and largest (24″ x 24″) is sized perfectly for spinnaker douses. The side decks are roomy, a result of the 11’11” beam and the fact that the chainplates and jib tracks are tucked in close to the deckhouse. The cockpit is large enough for evolutions such as spinnaker jibes with a full crew. The main trimmer and driver positions are as well placed as anything you’ll see on a custom offshore racer. The C&C 115’s halyards, spinnaker pole controls, and reefing lines all lead from double-stacked organizers at the mast back to Spinlock jammers arranged on either side of the companionway. The companionway is snug enough to keep you safe when big seas are running and large enough to fit a pitman and his octopus act. The Harken winches also seemed to be placed perfectly for every maneuver that you’d see on a racecourse. We sailed the 115 on an atypical Annapolis day; it was blowing 16- to 22-knots, and there was a decent-sized chop on the brown waters of the Chesapeake thanks to some heavy rains the week before. Backing out from a tight raft-up on the Eastport side of the Severn we had an early indication of how well the 115 backs down and how maneuverable the boat is under power, even in awkward situations. We set a full main and a heavy No. 1, both built by Doyle, and started reaching past the Spider buoy to get a clear runway for some upwind sailing. The 37-foot 115 handled extremely well in the big puffs that might’ve spun out many other boats. The rudder is balanced, and while it kept us from cavitating, and allowed us to turn down even without mainsheet ease, we heard some groans and felt some stiffness from bearings that felt as if they weren’t up to the task. Jackett explained the problems: This was the prototype 115 and a custom stainless steel sleeve that was supposed to fit over the carbon rudderpost came from the manufacturer looking more oval than round, plus the bearings they’d used are slated for an upgrade in the production series. Despite these issues, once we were able to get in a groove, the boat steered like a dream with only slight corrections by the helmsman. We averaged between 7.5 to 8 knots upwind, depending upon the wind strength. Once the symmetric spinnaker went up, we started to fly. We saw speeds of up to 10.2 knots and never felt on the edge. In fact, when we had to steer deep to settle a wrap, it was easy to sail max deep and not feel as if we were going to clean everyone out with an accidental jibe. There were only three of us aboard for the test sail, but Jackett thinks a crew of eight will be the call for race days. The 115 we sailed is Hull No. 1, a prototype of the production model, especially as far as the interior is concerned. The interior was part mock-up, made of like-sized C&C interiors, so it was hard to get a feel for how roomy the interior is going to be. We’re told that the 115’s interior is based on what owners of the C&C 110, a seven-year-old model, and the three-year-old C&C 99 told C&C they wanted in future designs. Suggestions included a larger galley, a nav station that faces forward, and an aft berth placed across the boat rather than fore-and-aft. We saw 110-volt electrical sockets everywhere, grab handles, and a high level of fit and finish, especially for a prototype. The price of a C&C 115 ready to sail, with $35, 435 worth of race options, such as Raymarine ST60 instruments, a Horizon VHF with a remote access microphone/speaker in the cockpit, PBO shrouds, carbon spinnaker pole, two Harken winches for spinnaker handling, and high-tech race sails, is $204, 935. We feel that the 115 will be a player on any racecourse and with all these goodies, deserves the label racer/cruiser. But when you see a 115 this summer or at a boat show this fall, you may decide it’s got the interior volume and comfort to be a great cruise platform too. It all depends on whether owners can tear themselves away from the smell of gunpowder. www.c-cyachts.com Cruiser/Racer, the Jeanneau Sun Fast 35 The Sun Fast 35’s hull form was originally introduced as the Sun Odyssey 35, an out-and-out cruiser as comfortable as the day is long, and extremely popular, with well over 300 boats sold since it’s introduction in 2002. Marc Lombard, a French designer who’s had success in the Open 60 class designed the 35, which means that even in Sun Odyssey configuration, it’s got raceboat DNA. In the past, Jeanneau has been successful in taking popular Sun Odyssey models, such as their 37-footer, and turbo-charging them with taller rigs and deeper keels, as well as racing hardware, so when they saw how popular the 35 was, they decided to do the same with it. The Sun Fast 35 uses the same hull, deck, and interior layout as the Sun Odyssey 35, and offers the same large, comfortable interior. Upgrades include a two-foot taller [52′ 8″], keel-stepped aluminum mast on which the wire standing rigging is replaced with discontinuous Dyform rod. The draft has been increased to 7 feet from 6, and the rudder has been lengthened as well. The traveler has been relocated from the cabin top to the cockpit, and an instrument cluster now resides just forward of the sliding hatch over the companionway. The hull construction is old school, but updated technologically and eminently reliable. Jeanneau builds hulls with a resin-injection process, which uses fiberglass and polyester resin, and layers high-stress areas with layers of Kevlar cloth. For stiffness, a structural grid of laminated hardwood is bonded to the hull. The deck is injected with Jeanneau’s proprietary injection system, which the company claims to make light, but strong decks. The Sun Fast weighs slightly more than the Sun Odyssey version, thanks in part to its keel bulb. On deck, Jeanneau has done a lot of things right, especially as far as racing gear is concerned: all the halyards lead back to banks of Spinlock XTS jammers on either side of the companionway, and all the deck gear and winches are Harken. An available option package features a two-groove headstay, a second spinnaker halyard, and a carbon spinnaker pole. The 35 we sailed came with some of its race crew for our test sail, and they showed us how well the deck layout works during maneuvers. The toerail, which runs from bow to stern and will make cruisers feel safe, won’t be popular on a long beat among hiking crews, but the side decks were roomy. A large hatch on the forward part of the deckhouse is plenty big enough for spinnaker takedowns. The cockpit, because of the length of the deckhouse, the traveler, and the optional steering wheel, was crowded during crew-intensive maneuvers such as jibing, so we feel that the tiller, which comes standard, might be a better choice. We used a 155-percent overlapping genoa in the 8-knot breeze and accelerated nicely out of tacks. The steering was light and responsive, a credit to the deeper rudder and keel. When the symmetric spinnaker went up, we were making 6.8 to 7 knots of boatspeed. The interior of the Sun Fast 35 is a space that belies the boat’s exterior dimensions, thanks in part to the large deckhouse. The head is huge, there’s lots of room in each of the two cabins [a three-cabin, two-head layout is an option], and handholds abound. The electrical panel is a cinch to get at, with only four machine screws (which thread into metal sleeves, a nice touch we’d like to see more of) holding it in place. The nav station is to port, with a sliding table, which has the navigator facing aft, sitting on the aft edge of the settee. The roomy L-shaped galley is to starboard and has plenty of counter space. The floorboard’s edges were sealed, an example of close attention to details by the builder. The 27 HP Yanmar is under the cockpit and is accessed by lifting the companionway stairs or removing two side panels in the aft cabins. The engine lives in it’s own fiberglass compartment, which keeps any oil or diesel from escaping to the rest of the bilge. The stainless steel propeller shaft carries a kelp cutter just forward of a folding, two-blade prop. In our engine test, the boat backed down in a well-mannered way. We saw 6.7 knots on the speedo at 2,800 rpm in forward and engine noise was only moderate. So is the Sun Fast 35 a cruiser/racer? For some, the cruiser surely comes first due to the boat’s proven accommodations and interior systems, but with its long waterline, deep appendages, and medium-tech construction, the 35 rates well in IRC and is likely to surprise with its speed. At a price of $180,596, loaded with performance sails, carbon spinnaker pole, Tuff Luff, and instruments, this boat could well be a chameleon, capable of putting either personality-race or cruise-first. www.jeanneauamerica.com

Thoughts on the C&C 115?

MedSailor

  • Add to quote

A friend and sailing buddy of mine owns a Catalina 400 which he races and cruises with his family of 4 in the PNW. He is looking for something similar, but easier to single-hand and handle, hopefully lighter weight to reduce costs and is more racing oriented. He still wants to preserve the ability to cruise in relative comfort compared to the Catalina 400. The boat will also be doing the Vic Maui (with me aboard!) in 2 years. He's favoring the C&C 115. Half the weight of his current boat, which should reduce maintenance costs. Similar accommodations below. Much more racing oriented. He believes it will be better for single handing, and while you can reach the traveller easily from the wheel, it looks difficult to get around the big wheel to get to the sheets. Thoughts? This kind of boat is not really my area of expertise. Any other boats he should be considering? C&C115 of yachtworld Another C&C 115 on yachtworld MedSailor

Hello, I own a C&C 110 (the predecessor to the 115), race against a 115, and a friend just bought a 121, so I am prejudiced towards C&C. The 115 is a very fast boat that can comfortably cruise. I don't know if it will be any cheaper to maintain than a Catalina 400. I don't believe there is a relationship between displacement and maintenance costs. I think that most 40' boats, comparably equipped, will cost about the same to maintain. Or course, if one boat has teak decks, lots of varnished wood, and is a ketch or cutter rig, that will cost more to maintain than a simple sloop with no wood. But assuming similar type boats, maintenance should be about the same. The C&C is much faster than the Catalina: C&C 115 PHRF ratings around 66-70, catalina 400 ratings are around 110). The C&C comes with a retractable bow sprit, so flying an asym spinnaker is easy. The 115 is smaller than the C400, I think the C&C 121 would be a better boat to compare. That said, if you're not spending weeks at a time aboard, the 115 should be big enough for 4 people to cruise comfortably. Good luck, Barry

Thanks Barry! I really appreciate your comments. Any known issues with this boat or other C&Cs that we need to know about?

blt2ski

THere is ONE 115 in the area that is not equal from the mast side to side. Not sure which one it is tho. THere were some issues in the early to late 0X range, and into the early 1X. One can probably still find some of the issues with the C&C and Tartan boats of this era. With that, I know of two with these boats. Overall they like them. I have raced on one, that a couple has cruised locally themselves with out issues. I personally did not notice any issues getting around the wheel per say, nor did it get in the way of the main, jib or spin sheets. There is one in Everett that is raced a lot! I can look it up if one wants to get a hold of that owner. If you look at one, make sure the mast is centered, otherwise that one will not race really well, probably cruise ok.....but one tack will be better than the other tack! Marty

Marty if you could put me in touch with the Everett owner I would be grateful!

JimsCAL

There were some serious issues with the epoxy hulls on several C&C and Tartan boats that received a lot of press about 5 years ago. This article in the BoatUS magazine is a good summary that presents both sides of the problems. http://my.boatus.com/consumer/pdf/2010-12-ItsTheSolutionThatCounts.pdf

A friend just bought a 7 year old 115 - (no bowsprit, btw, so that may have been an option) Decent layout, nice finish (Cherry) below for a 'race boat'..Pretty good cockpit and I'm sure it would sail circles around the C400. From a cruising standpoint, what struck me is the mainsheet arrangement (double ended leading to the aftmost cockpit winches) - traveller is reachable, sort of, but the winches are not really accessible from behind the wheel. That said, when sailing upwind I'd expect the helmsman would be straddling the wheel on the side deck so that will help.. but the headsail winches are a long way forward. Autohelm will be helpful, getting around the wheel will be a challenge for the less agile. Below the galley sink is far too big.. a water waster. They've already started using a plastic tub for doing dishes to save water. VERY good looking boat, as are most C&Cs,(to my eye) many seem to be dark coloured hulls which adds to the appeal, esp with the mutliple boot stripes, she looks to be doing 6 knots sitting at the dock!

PaulinVictoria

I've raced on one a few times, nice boat, sails very well, we were reaching back to the finish line doing 8+ kts the whole way. Big wheel, actually, massive wheel, feels great when you're stood behind it. There was one for sale locally, if only I'd had $200k burning a hole in my pocket. The CnC list is a good place to ask about any problems, there are a few 115 owners on there that post quite regularly.

PaulinVictoria said: ......There was one for sale locally, if only I'd had $200k burning a hole in my pocket. ... Click to expand...

Yep, that's the one, nice looking boat with the dark hull.

My friend was bummed when that one sold. The rest of the ones for sale are way out of town...

Coquina

The C&C will be WAY more fun to sail. I can't imagine how it would be cheaper to maintain though on average. A nice C&C is cheaper to maintain than a wrecked Catalina and vice versa, but there is no routine maintenace task I can see that will be very different from one to the other.

pershing 115 yacht

yachting/images/magazine/2005/122005/fea_pershing_525x350.jpg

It takes something very special to impress the jilted residents of the exclusive French town of St. Tropez. Years ago we brought this depot for the rich and famous to a standstill arriving with Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, but we had just set a record across the Atlantic. Sprinting into the port with the striking new, 40-knot Pershing 115 did not quite have the same impact, but this beautiful yacht did stop onlookers in their tracks as they stood and stared.

With the 115, Pershing joins a select band of boatbuilders who are going over the 100-foot mark, taking a quantum leap from the 88-foot former flagship design. This yacht has twice the volume of anything Pershing has ever built. Moreover I was on the first hull and for a prototype design they have done a really superb job of meeting their design and perfomance goals.

Pershing boss Till Antonelli is justifiably proud of the 115. “We knew there was a market out there for a larger Pershing and I think we took a bold step in making the jump straight from 88 to 115 feet. The result is there for all to see and it is a tribute to our new factory and the people who work there, Antonelli says.

The power behind this monster is a pair of 16 cylinder MTU diesels from the 4000 range that produce 3,700 hp each. These engines are huge and they seem to stretch forever along the engine compartment. They are coupled to ZF gearboxes and then the drive goes to KaMeWa water jets in what proved to be a very smooth power train. The water jets are unique in that the inlet ducts of the jets are an integral part of the hull molding which gives a better water flow to the impellers and improves their efficiency.

The two diesels have ample space between them and you see the reason for this when you look aft and see the molding in place for a third water jet. This gives the option to install a centerline TF50 gas turbine to bring the total power up to 13,000 hp. Now you are talking real excitement, and this installation is planned for the next unit that is already under construction. Look for speeds of over 55 knots from this second yacht, speeds that are squarely situated in the Pershing performance territory.

Access to the engine compartment is via a door in the cockpit which leads first to an auxiliary room with the switchboard, watermaker and air conditioning. Forward of this are the crew’s quarters and galley. Stairs lead up from the galley directly into the saloon, close by the dining table, and there is also a dumbwaiter for larger trays. The galley is fitted with all you need for sophisticated meal preparation and the styling, even in these working areas of the yacht, is a close match to the stunning guest areas.

Back aft, the swim platform that protects the water jets is bigger than the average sportsboat. Stairs lead up on both sides to the cockpit, and between them is the garage for the Zodiac tender together with its launching crane. You don’t need to skimp on the water toys on this yacht because there is a second garage that is revealed by raising part of the forward coach roof, housing two jet skis with another launching crane.

The 115 is full of more surprises and one of them comes from opening the door on the right of the saloon entrance. Here there is a stairway winding up to a very private sun deck sitting above the pilothouse. I was trying to determine why there was no sunroof on this yacht similar to those found on other Pershings-this sun deck was the reason. There is another, more public sunpad in the cockpit together with settees and a table, but the upper area is going to be everybody’s favorite.

The sliding saloon doors make an impressive entrance and walking into the saloon takes your breath away. There is none of the rich wood panelling so often found on superyachts, but here the designers have created a beautiful and light, almost minimalistic area with only the dining chairs and the blue leather locker fronts providing color. The settees are white leather, the woodwork a very pale gray-tinted ash, and the sides and overhead a very pale cream.

Quality is enhanced by integral modern artwork above the entrance door and on two of the side window pillars. The relaxing lounge area is aft and a dining table for 10 is forward in a open plan arrangement. Forward at the helm there are three imposing adjustable seats that create what looks like an altar to high performance.

The captain sits in the center chair, which is flanked by the engine and jet controls fitted into the armrests. Here he is master of all he surveys and he really can play tunes with the sensitive machinery controls. In front of him there are seven screens that provide all the information needed for high speed navigation and control, plus sophisticated monitoring systems. The latter have been specially developed by Pershing to control and monitor everything on board except the main engines. The engines have their own MTU dedicated displays and there is a separate display for monitoring the water jet. Large Simrad radar and chart displays provide a full picture of the navigation scene.

A couple of steps down from saloon level takes you into what is virtually a private cinema. Wide lounging settees and chairs face a big flat screen that can be fed from video, DVD or cable or satellite TV. This will be a popular evening relaxing area. Another stairway takes you to the staterooms where the layout is about the only conventional thing on this yacht: a master, a VIP and two twin cabins.

These are all decorated in a similar minimalistic style but with strong colors added through the leather bed bases, the mirror trims and the bright silk bed covers. The result is both modern and restful, with the spacious master stateroom occupying the full beam and featuring an angled bed and deep side windows to give natural light. The VIP stateroom in the bow is almost semi-circular in shape and large enough to have its own settee.

The heads have the same pale gray wood and modern fittings, including hemispherical glass basins. The soles here are wood but have metal strip inserts to give good grip when wet. The extravagant quality of the master stateroom can be seen in the fitting of his-and-her heads for the use of the owners.

The interior of this yacht may be stunning but it is the exterior styling that really sets the scene. The hull has the navy blue and silver combination that was pioneered by Pershing and has since been copied by many. This color scheme complements the series of rising curves that forms the superstructure and, like so much about this design, everything looks well integrated. The practical aspects of the design have been well thought out in most areas, but you only really appreciate the true quality of this yacht out on the water at speed.

We ran the 115 from Cannes to St.Tropez, which is a well-worn path for fast motoryachts. You appreciate one of the qualities of water jet drive with the very delicate maneuvering that is possible with this big yacht. Despite her size you can inch her forward or sideways delicately close to the dock, yet she will spin like a top when you need a quick response. It takes some skill and familiarity with the controls to get to this level of control but the effort is well worthwhile.

Out at sea the response is immediate and thrilling. The thrust from the jets powers the yacht onto plane and keeps it accelerating right up to its terminal velocity. The lack of vibration is impressive, and steering control is delicate and precise when you switch from the steerable joystick controls to the wheel steering. For trim adjustment, the 115 uses the latest interceptor system rather than trim tabs and these give an immediate response that reduces the adjustment period.

On our run down to St.Tropez we had a race with the TGV high-speed train along the coast. The train won that one, but there was no doubt we were fastest on the water that day. Pershing has found just the right balance in this yacht. This design has all the style you want to impress others, both inside and out, yet this is combined with very comfortable living on board. As for performance, 40 knots will meet most requirements but if you want to outrun everything on the water then you can always invest in the gas turbine option. Then maybe, you might even beat that train.

Four Seasons has long set the gold standard for luxury accommodations on land and is renowned for its exquisite hotels that offer unparalleled comfort and service. Now, this legacy of luxury is extending its reach to the seas. In a groundbreaking move, Four Seasons Yachts , in collaboration with Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd and the esteemed Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, is introducing an ambitious venture into luxury sea travel. Scheduled to set sail in 2026, this initiative promises an experience that transcends traditional cruising, offering voyages across the mesmerizing waters of the Caribbean and the historic coasts of the Mediterranean.

Alejandro Reynal, President and CEO of Four Seasons, expressed enthusiasm about bringing the brand's hallmark of guest-centered luxury to the high seas. According to Reynal, this expansion into yachting is a natural extension of Four Seasons' commitment to providing personalized, elegant, and comfortable experiences. The aim is clear: to redefine luxury hospitality, but this time, against the backdrop of the world's most stunning seascapes.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.
