Hi there, I am about to make the plunge into a Knuston 35, it is in great shape.. by this I mean solid, no rot anywhere, extremely well maintained. ( of course I am blinded by this point by the beauty of the boat - it may in fact be full of holes and I am just too awestruck to see them) Just wondering if you have any advice on what they are worth in top condition? (1958 sloop rig - Diesel westerbrake also great condition ). Also how are they on offshore ( i.e. panama - galapagos ), any dreadful points of sail? Anything you can tell me in general would be much appreciated. Thank you ever so much!

I don't know what the values are to be honest. As they say, beauty's in the eye of the beholder. As for bad points of sail? I have a modified (by the factory) yawl. I've not found any bad points of sail if the sails are good. I've had Oh Joy out in 50+ several times and the only complaint I have is the amount of work required in a quartering sea but I suppose that any tiller boat would be the same. She is a smooth sailing and fast (for the design) old girl. Pay special attention around the chainplates and look for discoloration of frames below them.

Thank you Charlie, much appreciate, I am going to be moving the boat to fresh water, I have to confirm that wont be a disaster to the hull, and then I think I am good to go. The 50 + is reassuring... I guess that answers the sea worthy questions. I will keep you posted and send some pictures when I go back out there. Paul

I am considering buying a Knutson 35 yawl. I currently own a Nonsuch 30 Ultra which i am trying to sell. The Knutson doesn't have an icebox at all, or a table. no dodger or bimini and they want 15K. Am I crazy? I live by the Knutson yard

Faster

... so what is it about the K35 that is tempting you away from the Nonsuch?

newt

I think this has to be the longest dead resurrection of a thread I have ever seen. I saw "Oh Joy" back in 08. Nice boat. Wonder what became of it. Charlie got it free and it had Kevlar glassed into the bottom. Tough as nails.

I don't see my reply so I'm trying again. Being new to this site I'm learning. The reason I am considering an old wood Knutson 35 and selling my very nice Nonsuch 30 Ultra is as follows: My father bought a wood boat when I was a kid and I have a fondness for them. I live by the Knutson yard and moor in the same harbor Huntington, N.Y.. I tend to keep boats five to six years. I enjoy working on boats to make them as perfect as possible and then look for my next project. My Nonsuch was made in Canada and popular there but down here most people don't know them.

The service we received from your company was exceptional and the quality of your product is second to none. We will certainly be return customers in the next few months to replace our main and jib sails and will recommend your company to all our sailing buddies. Once again-thank you.” -Daniel Jackson (Google)

World’s coolest yachts: S&S 34

Yachting World

  • August 5, 2021

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. This month Don McIntyre nominates S&S 34

knutson 35 sailboat

The most innovative all-time classic is the S&S 34. As a class they appeared in 1967, a year before the first Golden Globe Race, and Ted Heath [then leader of the opposition and later UK Prime minister], won the 1969 Sydney Hobart in his Morning Cloud .

About 200 have been built since, including 130 in Australia where they are loved to this day. Only one has ever been lost at sea and they are renowned for their heavy weather performance.

In 2008, when deciding on a boat to support 15-year-old Jessica Watson’s dream to become the youngest ever, solo non-stop unassisted sailor, the choice was easy.

Jon Saunders in Perie Banou twice circumnavigated solo breaking 12 world records. David Dicks as a 17-year-old took the family S&S 34 Seaflight around solo nonstop, followed shortly after by Jesse Martin, also 17, solo and unassisted on Lionheart . Jessica on Pink Lady [then unofficially took] the record from him, and it still stands today!

S&S 34 stats rating:

Top speed: 7 knots LOA: 10.23m Launched: 1967 Berths: 6 Price: £22,000 Adrenalin factor: 20%

Don McIntyre

Australian explorer Don McIntyre finished 2nd in class in the 1990/91 BOC Challenge solo around the world race, recreated the Mutiny on the Bounty, and resurrected the Golden Globe Race in 2018.

He is currently organising the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the original Whitbread, amongst other events.

Pilot 33 is a 32 ′ 10 ″ / 10 m monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens and K. Aage Nielsen and built by Knutson Shipbuilding Corp. between 1945 and 1952.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

S&S design #539. (The first post war S&S design.) After this first version, the PILOT class went through a number revisions. (A second version was introduced in 1959) This version, drawn by Aage Nielsen, an S&S employee at the time, was the most popular before the introduction, in 1962, of the slightly larger HINCKLEY PILOT 35 (S&S #1727), designed specifically for fiberglass construction. First built by Fisher Boat Works in Detroit, MI, (sometimes called FISHER PILOT 33) and later by Thomas Knutson in Huntington, NY. The original plans showed a Gray Marine gas engine for auxiliary power.

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat.
