How a Rusted-Out ’50s Feadship Was Salvaged and Transformed Into a Modern Classic

Left corroding in a marina, the vessel's new owner decided he didn't want to restore the 138-foot superyacht, but recreate her with modern systems., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

1950s Feadship Istros was recreated with modern engines and interior

Once the largest motoryacht built in the Netherlands, the 138-foot Istros is a story of passion, neglect and ultimately, as her name means in Greek, inspiration. Delivered in 1954 to the Pappadakis family, who owned a global shipping concern, Istros was the height of ’50s fashion, with white telephones and “violet-blue-tinted bathrooms,” not to mention radar, which was then a rarity, even for a superyacht .

The yacht was later acquired by a British seasoned sailor, owner of classic sailboat Hispania , who gave Istros ’s interior a complete overhaul as part of a multi-million-dollar refit. This led to the grand prize for the best restored vessel at the Monaco Yacht Club Prada Classic Yacht Show in 2001.

But when her current owner and his captain of 10 years, Tristan Le Brun, discovered her in the Maltese port of Valetta in July 2015, Istros was little more than a corroding hulk of steel.

“She had been lying in the water for years and the rot had really set in,” Le Brun told Robb Report . “My employer and I had been looking for a classic boat to restore for quite some time. It needed to be a yacht built at a reputable yard like Feadship . When we saw Istros we knew she was the right one.”

Having owned three yachts before Istros, the owner’s aim was clear: Preserve the exterior and rebuild the rest.

“It takes intense modifications to convert a boat designed and built in the 1950s into a 2020s-caliber motoryacht, but it was never our intention to make Istros historically authentic,” says Le Brun. “We wanted the elegant exterior lines and emotions of a classic motoryacht without any of the compromises that come with a vintage vessel.”

In other words, old engines, outdated electronics and other systems, not to mention high levels of noise, vibrations and emissions. That pursuit for comfort and efficiency meant complex revisions were made to the new Istros.

Before any work could begin, however, the boat was fully dismantled at a yacht refit center in Valetta and stripped down to the bare hull, and then shipped to a specialist subcontractor in the Netherlands for reconstruction. Feadship also built an entirely new aluminum superstructure, the only element of the build that was to be an exact replica of the original. With very few plans to hand, this was done by 3D scanning the boat at three different stages of the build. The same laser technology was subsequently used to measure the interior volumes.

“The entire boat has been rebuilt and reinforced,” explains Le Brun. “New shaft lines, new main engines and new steering gear have been fitted. Zero-speed stabilizers and a bow thruster have been added.”   Istros also now complies with the latest safety standards. That meant changing the position of the watertight bulkheads to modify the structural integrity of the boat.

The two original 500-hp diesel engines, each weighing 18 tons, have been replaced with two smaller, modern 600-hp diesels, weighing just two tons each. That means the original split-level engine room is much smaller, freeing up huge interior volume for guest areas.

The key feature of this refit is the first Lloyds’ class-approved microturbine on any yacht. Compact, vibration-free, and highly efficient, the low-emissions generator provides the yacht’s electrical power, while also being IMO Tier-III compliant.

Feadship suggested the microturbine. “From an owner’s perspective, the benefits are ten-fold,” he adds. “When you’re sitting at anchor, you can’t hear a whisper from the turbine. It can run for thousands of hours before any maintenance is needed. The funnel exhaust system is compliant for harbor use, so we can arrive in a marina and stay on generator power without disturbing our neighbors.”

The interior has been fully reimagined in a chic Scandinavian style by Van Geest Design. There are now more guest staterooms, and all cabins, including the owner’s suite, have been enlarged and rearranged. The main salon and galley have also been redesigned.

“We’re playing with smaller volumes than yachts built today, so the interior needed to be minimalistic and light with just a few classic touches,” says Le Brun.

Completed at the end of last summer, Istros made her way from the Netherlands to Monaco to meet her owner. “He was sitting on the terrace of the Yacht Club de Monaco enjoying a glass of rosé when Istros cruised into the marina in front of him,” says Le Brun. “It was a very special moment.”

Istros is available to charter in the western Mediterranean next summer through Cecil Wright & Partners.

Feadship Completes Restoration on 1954 Yacht Istros

Feadship has completed the complete renovation of the classic 1954 superyacht  Istros .

The 42 metre  De Vries Lentsch -built yacht has now left Feadship's Makkum yard and is currently in Monaco, according to BOAT Pro.

The complete renovation of the yacht, which began in 2018, saw the interior overhauled into "family-orientated, sunny Scandinavian style" with "contemporary and classic elements".

The renovation also included the installation of a brand new engine room for Istros ' new propulsion. This consisted of twin C18 main engines, a C4.4 diesel generator and a Capstone DC 65 diesel Micro Turbine generator.

A restoration project on the yacht was originally started in 2013 by  H2 Yacht Design  and Laurent Giles Naval Architects but aborted due to financial difficulties. The sale of the yacht in 2018  resulted in this fresh restoration attempt by the new owner.

Istros to inspire again after complete Feadship rebuild

Feadship has embarked on a major rebuild of the 1954 motoryacht Istros , giving this 42-metre superyacht an all-new aluminium superstructure while retaining her elegant original hull. The result will be a virtually brand-new Feadship, built to the highest standards of Feadship quality and featuring the latest equipment.

Istros was originally built by Amsterdam Shipyard Ltd. G. de Vries Lentsch Jr. in 1954 and was one of the largest motoryachts built to date in the Netherlands at that time. Contemporary newspaper articles were most impressed with the luxurious outcome of a two-and-a-half-year project on behalf of the Greek shipping family Pappadakis. One journalist was awestruck by the violet-blue bathrooms, the advanced radar system and, most of all, by a white telephone which could be used to “call people anywhere in the word from wherever in the world the yacht may be.”

The name Istros – meaning inspiration – was clearly appropriate and the motoryacht set off to enjoy a typically eventful few decades in the Mediterranean. A first attempt at a restoration was started several years ago but stalled due to a lack of funds. Since then a new owner contacted Feadship to enter into a complete rebuild project, which started in 2018 with the removal of the superstructure and stripping and reconditioning of the hull at a yard in Malta.

Looking at the images of the hull arriving back in the Netherlands, it might be hard to imagine how Istros can be returned to the glamorous gentlemen’s yacht of yesteryear. But this is a Feadship rebuild and anything is possible. After the hull has been refitted, a new superstructure will be added in aluminium. A new engine room will be constructed to house twin C18 main engines, a C4.4 diesel generator and a Capstone DC 65 diesel Micro Turbine generator.

Developed together with the highly experienced owner, Van Geest Design has designed a family-oriented and child-friendly interior. Mixing the contemporary with the classic in a warm, Scandinavian style, the yacht will also be ideal for charter use. The all-new Istros is due to be relaunched before the summer of 2020.

Classic motor yacht ISTROS set to join charter fleet following rebuild

By Editorial Team   18 August 2020

The classic 42m/138ft motor yacht ISTROS is set to join the world of private yacht charter as she nears the end of an extensive rebuild by Feadship.

The custom motor yacht was built back in 1954 by Dutch shipyard de Vries Lentsch. At the time ISTROS , meaning inspiration, was one of the largest and most advanced motor yachts on the seas. Her radar system and onboard telephone were particularly unusual.

Whilst many details are still shrouded in secrecy, Feadship has designed a vessel that retains the original heritage of ISTROS, but has transformed her into a family-oriented and child-friendly yacht ready for charter.

The Van Geet Design interiors are a blend of contemporary and vintage elements in a Scandinavian style. Elsewhere there are several nice touches that retain her classic feel, for instance a Kymeta flat satellite panel has been cleverly integrated into her chimneys, meaning there is no visible satellite dome, something that is often associated with modern yachts.

Commenting on the rebuild,  Tristan le Brun, Captain of ISTROS, stated; "The whole idea behind Istros, when we found the hull, was to create a gentleman’s yacht that combined a classic soul with modern conveniences. The owner loves technical stuff and with help from Feadship we’ve pushed it even further, because in some ways she’s actually ahead of her time, which is fantastic for a 65-year-old hull."

The rebuild of the classic yacht began in earnest in early 2018 when the superstructure was removed and hull stripped at a shipyard in Malta, before it made its way to Feadship’s Makkum shipyard last spring. Here Feadship fitted a new aluminium superstructure and made the decision to substitute one of the onboard generators with an eco-friendly micro turbine.

The use of a micro turbine perfectly suits ISTROS as a charter yacht, as it ensures no emissions, silent operation and no vibrations. ISTROS can therefore arrive in a marina and stay on generator power without disturbing neighbouring boats.

The impressive nature of the Feadship rebuild can be seen in the construction of a new engine room for the twin C18 engines, C4.4 diesel generator and Capstone DC560 gas turbine generator. These modern engines take up much less space than the two original, huge Crossley engines that weighed 18 tons each.

The resulting, smaller, engine room has created room on the lower deck for four staterooms aft of the engine room, and a generous crew mess, large laundry and accommodation for seven crew forward. The owner’s stateroom is forward on the main deck, with a third multipurpose lounge with bathroom on the bridge deck, that can act as an extra guest cabin when ISTROS is on charter.

With the Feadship rebuild project now nearing completion, ISTROS is expected to complete sea trials and see delivery in the coming weeks.

Feadship to Rebuild Classic Yacht Istros

By Anna Solomon

Exciting news from Feadship : The shipyard is embarking on a rebuild of the iconic 1954 motoryacht Istros. This ambitious project will give the 42m build a brand new aluminium superstructure which retaining the vintage elegance of her original hull.

Istros was built nearly seven decades ago by Amsterdam Shipyard Ltd. G. de Vries Lentsch Jr on behalf of the Greek shipping family Pappadakis. At the time of her launch she was one of the largest motoryachts ever built in the Netherlands, and wowed local journalists with her luxury pedigree. One report expressed awe at the violet-blue bathrooms, advanced radar system and a telephone which could be used to “call people anywhere in the world from  wherever in the world the yacht may be.”

The rebuild will not only restore the wonderfully preserved 42m to her former glory, but equip her with the latest technology and renovate her to the highest standards of Feadship quality.

The yacht’s name means inspiration - a fitting title for a vessel with a backstory as rich as Istros’. Once a pioneer of its time, attempts at restoring the 42m began several years ago but stalled due to lack of funds. The new owner then turned to Feadship to complete the job.

The project kicked off in 2018, with the removal of the superstructure and the stripping and reconditioning of the hull, and will culminate in Istros being returned to the glamorous gentleman’s yacht of yesteryear. Once the hull has been refitted, a new aluminium superstructure will be added before the construction of a new engine room

Finally, the vessel’s interior will be family-oriented and child-friendly, mixing contemporary function with chic, warm, Scandinavian style.

The revolutionised Istros will relaunch before the summer of 2020, with the combination of Feadship and the owner’s expertise forecasting the project as one that will go down in history.

Captain of 1954 Feadship ISTROS on Rebuilding a Classic

April 9th, 2021 (jenna mehdi - superyachts.com), the 1954 classic feadship motor yacht istros caught the industry’s attention as she emerged from a major rebuild just last year. in possibly the most extreme example of a superyacht rebuild, istros gives new meaning to the phrase ‘modern classic’. retaining only the original 1954 hull and form, istros is equipped with all-new state-of-the-art systems and an innovative, eco-friendly ethos. now available for charter with cecil wright & partners, we heard from captain tristan le brun on the remarkable experience of rebuilding istros from the ground up….

At first glance, it is difficult to reconcile Istros ’ elegant form and exemplary modern-classic appearance with the abandoned hull towed into the Feadship yard two years earlier. ‘From a technical point of view, there is nothing left from the 50s, ’ Tristan tells us. ‘Everything is new from A to Z.’

Take a closer look though, and you may notice there is something different about the way Istros looks. She does not look quite like a ‘modern classic’ built today.

‘It was a big challenge to have the whole boat comply with modern safety and construction regulations,’ says Tristan. ‘ Most modern classics built to modern regulations will end up being higher, wider - bulkier, without the same elegance.’

And the challenge certainly paid off. As her owner put it, for guests looking to charter a truly authentic modern classic with ‘an immediate feeling of boarding a gentleman’s liner from 1954 ’, there is nothing like Istros on the market.

But how did the project come about?

Having worked together for 11 years now, Istros is the fourth refit project taken on by owner and captain. Each project growing more ambitious than the next, Tristan tells us both men are in it for the love of engineering (the owner being an engineer by trade) and desire to be as efficient as possible on every level.

‘We were both fascinated by some ideas that we had, that classic yachts are truly timeless and will always appeal to people with their elegance,’ Tristan says. ‘But we were also very aware that most of the classic yachts nowadays, even if they have a refit, never go far enough in the process. There is always some old equipment left on board - old piping, old wiring or insulation. ’

So when Captain Tristan was browsing the internet one afternoon while at anchor in the Bahamas and spotted Istros listed for sale at a reasonable asking price, he knew he had found their next project.

‘I had first spotted her back in 2015 - she was berthed in Malta and left unattended and rotting. Later when I saw her for sale, I was convinced she was a Feadship - but she was advertised as De Vries Lentsch.’

Owner and captain had almost proceeded in 2014 with another project, also a classic Dutch hull, but had stopped because the stability of the boat was not compatible with the weight distribution brought on by new systems and insulation. Istros, as it turned out, would be just right.

With a good knowledge of the complex history of the four Feadship shipyards, Captain Tristan became more and more certain the hull was Feadship-built. He did his research, checked the archives and put his case to Feadship. It was accepted.

‘From the very beginning I had Feadship in mind for the rebuild ,’ he told us. ‘It would be a mistake to do what we did to Istros without a good brand name. I’ve seen a few “unknown” projects like that and I think they are much more difficult to market when the time comes.’

As it would turn out, Feadship was an excellent choice for the rebuild. Utilising the very best in Dutch engineering, the innovative eco-friendly systems onboard Istros would be considered remarkable even on a new build.

A zero PPM water filter means Istros’ crew can wash the boat down with minimal to no soap, without need to dry after washdown. The benefits of this are twofold, as Istros will need much longer intervals between resprays - which is itself highly pollutant.

‘There are lots of examples of eco-friendly solutions which required some investment, but which will prove financially beneficial to us in the long run ,’ Tristan tells us.

Another is the yacht’s diesel turbine which operates with very low emissions. Maintenance is much less frequent than on a diesel generator, Tristan says, anticipating a return in four or five years. Add to this the yacht’s intelligent heat recovery system and various onboard operations - swapping plastic for glass bottles for example - and Istros proves a match for the most sustainable of new builds.

And Tristan’s favourite part of the experience? ‘ When I come into a marina and see the reaction of the people there. It can be a linesman or tourists walking on the docks - they stop what they are doing and get their phones out to take a picture.

If someone working on a boat all day long stops to take a picture of another boat - that’s very rewarding to me.’

Istros will be available for charter in the West Mediterranean with Cecil Wright & Partners this upcoming season.

The yacht has already generated significant interest even as we only just begin to come out of lockdown. Enquire now to secure your booking.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

  • The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
  • The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
  • Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

Insider Today

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8. The Harbor Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."
