Monark 14' sailboat

  • Add to quote

I bought a used 14' sailboat. It says Monark, with a "k". I can find very little information online about this boat. I have attached a few photos. I am specifically looking for advice on how to repair the mast step (I believe that is the proper term). The "seat" for the mast needs to be reseated. Thank you.

Hey there, I have a MonArk 14 too - I can't find any information on it online and i need to buy new sails, the old ones weren't included when i bought the boat. do you have measurements on the sails or any other information on this boat? I am currently in the process of cleaning it and restoring it - but would love to take it out soon!

It's been a while since your post, but we have a set of used sails at Midwest Sailing in Michigan [email protected]

Going to have to use basic boat repair techniques for the mast step. First: How easily are the wood inserts in the seats to remove? Glued in or screwed down? (pictures too small to see) If they come off easily by removing screws, start pulling the ones near the mast and see if there are access holes through the fiberglass under them. If the wood is bonded to the fiberglass LEAVE IT ALONE. If no access to see inside the hull, you MIGHT end up having to make access to view inside and evaluate what needs to be done. This is pretty common and generally people cut round access ports and then fit them with cover plates (6 inch dia access port kit is about $8) Its not a big deal to cut these holes... Hopefully its simpler, but the pics so far are inadequate to say for sure. First step is actually getting a good look and figuring out how much repair is needed. ************************ For missing sails... you can get a view of the rigging (usually) on sailboatdata.com Unfortunately... no rigged side view this time. MONARCH 14 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com See Understanding Sail Dimensions and Sail Area Calculation for what you'll need to measure to find the correct sail size. If one of you has good sails (or at least good enough) and can directly measure them, that is ideal.

Thank you for your reply! My one concern was that the information provided on sailboatdata.com was that it was spelled Monarch not MonArk - but now that i look into it more, it is probably referencing the same boat. It is very similar to the Holder 14. I've attached a picture of it since I've begun cleaning / polishing it. It looks as though it has been neglected for some time. I've also attached a picture of an advertisement I found for it online. I wish there was more information on this boat! I also wish that one of these sail manufacturers had this boat in their system so that ordering a new jib and main would be a breeze :2 boat:

I have this boat as well which I have never been able to sail because the rope that lets down the starboard dagger-board broke and I HAVE NO CLUE how to run a new rope through. I cannot figure out how to get into the dagger-board compartment. Ideas????

I would bet that if it has twin swing-retractable daggerboards (swing keel) that the wood for the seats does come off for access to the mechanism. Also in the above pictures, it looks like the wood seats have finger holes for getting hold of them for removal. It can't be a lot like the Hobie Holder/Hobie 1/Vagabond 14 if its twin swing keels. One version of these has a centered single swing keel, the rest use a simple daggerboard in a slot that drops in from above. I'd expect the swing keels to be metal while daggerboards are typically Mahogany or fiberglass. Chrysler made a 16 ft boat with lever operated twin swing keels. *********************** Anyway, look for how to pull the seats so you can take pictures of what is in there and I expect we'll be able to figure out the swing keel system. If you flip the hull you'll see how the hinge is connected to the hull if you don't see it by getting under the seats.

Thank you for a quick reply! The storage compartments under the wooden seats are solid, no access to anything through them without 'fiberglass surgery'. In the attached pictures you can see the small holes where the ropes come out which pull up and let down the swing keels with fast entry cam cleats to hold the ropes. Right now one of my keels is hanging out because with the snapped rope I am unable to pull it back into its compartment. I will try and get some better pictures of my own boat and perhaps some from below the boat if I can get it hoisted up. I imagine that the board may need to be let down completely and rope restrung BUT unsure how to remove the pivot pin way up in the keel compartment to do so. Is it possible that some boats you simply must cut into? Or maybe I am just missing something :/ Thanks!

I have the same boat. The center boards are really hard to remove. They are held on by spring loaded pipes ... like a toilet paper roll holder. You use a long screwdriver in the side slot to pry one end of the pipe in, then slip a flat piece of metal to keep it pressed in. Then you very, carefully use the screwdriver to push in the other side and that will release the very heavy center board. Be careful because if the ropes are not attached, the centerboard can hit you on the head. The centerboard is the same size as the rudder. Once you get the boards out the ropes are easy to replace. In my case, the wood around the the rope holes was a bit rotted, so I repaired the damage with some epoxy. I have a lot of documentation on this boat. They are very well made and lots of fun to sail. Mel

Need photos of the boards But usually when a line is blind or hidden where it goes in and comes out, the best thing to do is connect the new line to it with a smooth connection by either sewing or very well taped. You then use the old line and pull the new line through. It's called using a messenger line, it's also used to pull new halyards up a mast on larger boats.

Hi all, I love that this thread is getting some attention. The ropes that hold up the swing keels on my boat are old and brittle and i could see them breaking some time soon. There appears to be no way to replace this rope, unless one was to flip the boat on it's side and find a way that way. Given that this thing weighs a ton, this won't be an easy task. The messenger line idea may work, but I'm not too sure. Currently, I am waxing, cleaning and using epoxy to patch a few areas on my MonArk before i launch it in the water, so that i can take the trailer home and re-paint it. Only after that is done will it be ready to throw a trolling motor 55 lb thrust and marine battery in for some fun. The sails will be ordered this winter.

You are waxing, cleaning and using epoxy to patch a few areas, going to buy new sails and you can't or won't try to fix lines for the drop board keels... yiiiii goodbye good luck

Hey Denise. I don't think i said i can't or won't replace those lines, i said that it would be a difficult task! Obviously these are essential to the boat, and them working properly is pretty close to garnering the term, 'paramount' - that being said, there is no easy way to replace these. my idea is next time the boat is in the water, or being raised up, or on shore where it can be tipped - this is when the surgery will take place. unless you have any better ideas?

Almost certainly the boat will have to be on land. I'd be surprised if the hull is a lot heavier than the Vagabond 14/Hobie One/Hobie Holder series boats. (all of these just have minor cosmetic differences from each other except the one that has swing keel instead of daggerboard) I can drag my Vagabond off the trailer and flip (onto the lawn with some cheap life jackets and pool noodles for padding) it solo, with a bad back and a prosthetic leg. Its about a 300 lb hull (probably a bit less). Just takes some thought about how to go about it, a good anchor point about 10 to 12 ft above where the boat will be flipped, some rope and 3 pulleys. If you can get it secured and supported on its side you can hopefully access everything at once for changing your swing keel lines. Even with broken/missing line you should be able to thread one through using an electrician's "fish tape" or a long, thin stiff wire. The big problem being accessing the attachment point on the swinging keel.

monarch sailboat

You will have to lift the boat off the trailer with a jack, prop it up on 8' long 4x4s set on cinder blocks, pull the trailer out, let the boards go down all the way, remove old rope but keep it in place, attach new rope to the old rope (end to end) so you can pull it through (put a few sail thread stitches on the rope end joint so it holds well). Once new rope is in place, attach rope ends to the board with a shackle. Standing the boat on a side next to a tree (for support) works if you have one or two strong helpers.

Does anyone know the weight of the M-1? I need a new trailer and want to make sure it's within the weight limits of the trailer.

this thing weighs so much - it is unbelievable. i need to paint my trailer and i think the only way to do it is to drop this thing somewhere (water / boat yard) and pay the fee and take a few days to fix the trailer. ive tried pushing it off the trailer with a few guys and its next to impossible.

I just bought a used Monark 14 (M-1) and also need to replace the ropes in the two centerboards. Will try the latest comment about pushing in the spring loaded pivots. Did any of you guys posting here have success replacing the centerboard ropes?

unfortunately, i still haven't tried this. the poor monark has been resting in the garage for far too long. Let me know if you try this and how it goes though - would be interested to hear. the notion of just tipping this boat on its side and fixing it is just laughable. my monark seems to have a cement balast system.

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! Both Monark and Monarch are/were boat manufacturers. Monark is still in business and specializes in aluminum boats and pontoons http://www.monarkmarine.com/ Probably not your make. Monarch was a fiberglass boat company that (as far as I know) as been defunct for several decades. Little information is available about them. A HIN (Hull Identification Number) would help greatly. Located in the upper to mid Right corner of the transom (back) of the boat. Crunchy should only apply to your breakfast cereal.. not the sole of your boat. If you can hear and feel it that bad already you are probably in deeper than you want to be. Rotten floors/soles usually mean rotten stringers, transom, etc... BIG, frustrating project, check out some of the projects in the restoration forum http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22 Good luck.

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! KW - thanks for the quick reply. It looks like I'll probably have to gut it out completly in the spring down to the stringers to restore it correctly , would be a good winter project if I had a garage ,but fortunitly there are a lot of posts here with repairing floors and transoms. I know It'll cost quite a bit and take a lot of reading for each step -but will be a learning experince. I can't wait to land a couple of those bass that keep mocking me just outside my off-shore casting range. I'll probably improvise till then with a quick fix so I can get some fishing in while I can. As for the HIN it is 64320 according to the registration, and says it's the "serial" number on the bill of sale. It also says "Montecello Ark" on the tag - but when i do a search - just gives me a town in Arkasas. Frustrating!

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! hull id # should be on the outside of the transom, upper, starboard side. that will get you the best results.

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! The length you measure may not match the bill because of the way they measure length on boat. It is measured around the outside gunnel not from the transom to the bow in a straight line.

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! In the end, I don't think it matters who made it or what it is called. Parts are all purchased after market for all except the newest boats or those with custom made fittings (if the manufacturer or its dealers maintain and inventory like Boston Whaler). Rebuild it, register as is and enjoy it. It is not really worth the time to try to figure it out. Enjoy the project, Dan

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! Tashasdaddy ? the hull ID on this is on the Inside Transom, on this one and on the Port side ? it reads from top to bottom: Mon Ark Boat Co Monticello, ARK Model No: MARK I Srial No: 64320 Joed ? thanks for the measuring tip but confusing when looking at fee charges and measured differently by Michigan DNR. According to their Boating Hanbook undr ?Vessel Length Classes? it says ?length is measured from tip of bow in srtaight nine to stern. This does not include outboard motors, bracket, ??ect?. There are fees for less than 16, and increases from 16? to less than 26?, and although wouldn?t apply in this case ? would be confusing if it measured 15 in sraight line, but 16? with outher method around gunnel. Do I have it right ? when selling a boat sellers measure outside for longer measurement, but for DNR fee purposes measure in straight line? Sorry ? I?m new to this and clarification would help. 109jb ? do I disreguard the different measuring comment? Doen?t make sence to me ? measure around the side and only adds about 2? ? still a 14 footer ? unless I find a magical boat strecher, or a tape measure that starts at 12?. MrDancer ? thanks for the SeaArk tip ? will look into it. Fishing Dan ? thanks for the advice ? But I?m also trying to find the original layout, and specs. I'd like to rebuild it as close to the original as possible. It's basically a blank slate, had some cobble-job loking repairs done in the past - but I'm confident I can do it a lot better with the advise of the experts here. Randal106 ? It looks simular to the McFast but mine is shorter, more rounded in front, butt McNaked, and still trying to find it?s orgins. I can?t believe none of the experts here have never hadone of these models somewhere ? mine must be an orphan. Here?s another question, at the expence of exposing my lack of boating knowlwdge. The stern is boxed off and there?s a 6? high glassed baord upright separating the walking area from the back where one would put the fuel, etc (don?t know what that area is called) But in the center there is a 6? x 12? recessed area and a drain plug in the center bottome of th transome, as expectd ? but there are also 2 more, to the right and that left sides of the recessed area to dair from unde the deck? Does that mean there was livewells originally and they were useds for draiage? If not why are they there? If someone left the plugs out, water would flow to the stern, and be contained it that area untill it drained undre the deck filling it with water.

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! OK. Since it's important to you, I went to www.nadaguides.com and went year by year. The only year there was a Mark I model was 1973. It is a 14' fiberglass trihull boat, like yours. That's the only year that model shows up, so it sounds like you've got one of those titles that started out as one boat and ended up as another. It's pretty common. You can see the specs at: http://www.nadaguides.com/default.a...y=1973&ml=M&z=34135&gc=MR&gtc=MR&d=1600122564 I hope that helps. At least you'll know what year it really is. I couldn't find any photos of that model, but that's not unusual. 14' trihull fishing boats just aren't that interesting to collectors, so there are few photos of them. Good luck with your trihull.

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! CATransplant Thanks! Called Sea Ark - and they had nothing available for info. Just Said Mon Ark stopped making fiberglass in '88. Guess I'll have to forget about the original layout and just rebuid what works for me. Any ideas on why it has three plugs in the stern area? One in the transom to drain boat, but two more on either side of recessed area.

Re: Mon Ark OR Monarch ? Model doesn't exist? What the H*** did I just buy? Augh! A lot of those boats had live wells. My old Glastron V-147, another trihull, had a drain in the bottom of the boat for the livewell. Used the same size plug as the transom's bilge drain. Actually, they weren't for draining the livewells, but for filling them. Once you were in the water, you could pull the plugs, and the water would rise in the well to the level equal to the waterline of the boat. You drained them through the same plug when the boat was on the trailer. They worked OK, as long as the livewell was intact. If it had a leak, though, you ended up with water below the deck, leading to rot and soaked foam. Probably, your boat had livewells where those drain plug are located. I can't see your boat, but I imagine it is a typical trihull fishing or fish and ski boat for the period. Most are more or less rectangular in shape, with rounded corners at the bow. Most have a side console, with seating next to that. Some have stern seating, with storage or livewells under the fold up seats. They're stable fishing platforms, but were built very cheaply. Many don't even have stringers under the deck, but use foam for stiffness as well as flotation. That they have survived for 30+ years is a credit to their simplicity of design. It's not hard to restore one, even if the foam is soaked. If you remove the bumper trim from around the perimeter of the boat, the upper half of the boat, usually including a fiberglass deck, will lift off. The foam and any stringers can be replaced. Often, the transom isn't a full transom, but is, instead, a solid wood panel across the top of the transom, with an extension down into the bilge. Horsepower ratings for the 14-15' boats is generally 35-50 hp. 35 is plenty, and will push the boat to the mid 20 mph range. In chop, they're quite slappy, but they're easy to fish from, due to their almost rectangular shape. Good small water fishing boats. They plane quickly and work out well as fishing boats. Good luck with yours.

UK Elections 2024: Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party faces mounting challenge as most polls predict rout for his party's 14-year rule

L ondon [UK], June 30 (ANI): The Conservative Party, which has been in power in the United Kingdom for around 15 years, faces a mounting task while heading into the general elections under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's leadership, with most polls predicting the return of a Labour government in the country for the first time since 2010.

A record number of candidates - more than 4,000 - are campaigning for the July 4 general election across the country.

Polling suggests the vote will result in a Labour majority after more than a decade of Conservative rule under five leaders, including current PM Rishi Sunak and David Cameron, now foreign secretary, Al Jazeera reported.

But there is an intensifying atmosphere of division as the hard-right party Reform, led by populist leader Nigel Farage, appears on track to improve on its performance in the 2019 elections, when it was known as the Brexit Party.

Economic stagnation, a housing crisis , the cost of living , immigration and foreign policy concerns are among the major issues in the elections.

The past 15 years have seen the worst income growth in the UK for generations, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

"It has been slow growth for essentially everyone - rich and poor, old and young. This means that even while income inequality has been stable, progress on reducing absolute poverty has been painfully slow," Tom Waters, an associate director of the IFS, said in late May.

In recent years, Britons have also been battling a cost-of-living crisis as prices surge and salaries stagnate.

The Conservative and Labour parties have set out differing routes to fix the economy.

Labour leader Keir Starmer has announced plans to reform the National Health Service, home-building system, energy sector and other key industries. His party has also promised 7.4 billion pounds (USD 9.4 billion) in tax rises to invest in these sectors.

For the Conservatives, a promise of 17 billion pounds (USD 21.6 billion) per year of tax cuts has been made, including 2 percentage points off the main rate of National Insurance contributions, a mandatory tax on salaries.

Meanwhile, rising property prices, rent hikes and a lack of affordable new builds are the reasons behind a years-long housing crisis .

According to the Local Government Association, the number of temporary accommodations due to the shortage of social housing rose by 89 percent in the 10 years until March 2023.

The growing pressure on local councils to support the public intensified through austerity measures intended to reduce the government's budget deficit that were implemented when a Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition came to power in 2010.

Mia Gray, an economic geography professor at the University of Cambridge, told Al Jazeera that Britain is in the grip of "an affordable housing crisis ".

To remedy the situation, the Conservatives have pledged to build 1.6 million new homes if they win the general election.

On the other hand, Labour officials have said they will restore local house-building targets, which were scrapped in 2023, with an aim to construct 1.5 million new homes in the coming years.

Health is another crucial issue going into the elections. According to YouGov's "most important issues" tracker for Britons ahead of the vote, the issue is second only to the cost of living , with 34 per cent of respondents listing it.

The official number of people on waiting lists for treatment on the National Health Service (NHS) stood at 7.6 million in April this year - only slightly down from last September's record high of 7.8 million.

Meanwhile, the proportion of people waiting more than four hours to see a doctor at Accident & Emergency departments of hospitals in the UK - a key indicator used to measure the NHS - has risen steadily over the 14 years that the ruling Conservative Party has been in power. While it stood at about 6 per cent at the start of 2011, it passed 50 per cent in December 2022 and has only come back down to about 42 per cent now.

In their manifesto for the general election, the Conservatives have promised to increase the budget for the NHS but, for many, it is too little, too late.

The issue of immigrants will also play a crucial role in the poll campaign. Al Jazeera cited a recent YouGov poll carried out for Sky News, which suggested that 43 per cent of Britons believe immigration has a negative impact on society, compared with 35 per cent who said the effect of immigration is positive.

The Conservatives have repeatedly pledged to crack down on the number of people arriving through 'irregular' means, such as those who cross the English Channel from France on small boats, Al Jazeera reported. On Wednesday, the party was dealt a blow as official figures showed 882 people arrived in this way, the highest daily toll since late 2022.

Sunak's government has backed a highly controversial plan, the 'Rwanda Plan', to deport undocumented people to Rwanda to have their asylum claims processed there. But the deal has been blocked several times by courts that ruled the plan "unlawful".

In the two years since it was announced, no flights have taken off to Rwanda. Sunak says the first flight will leave on July 24 at the earliest, assuming he wins the election.

On the other hand, the Labour Party has said that if it wins, the Rwanda plan will be scrapped. But, at the same time, it has promised to cut down net migration figures without elaborating on how it will do so.

Right-wing candidate Farage has called for further tough policies around immigration , which he blames for many societal woes.

"Immigration is the real reason for the housing crisis !" Farage posted on X on Thursday.

Immigration as a campaign issue cannot be detached from Britain's decision to leave the European Union.

Ever since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, the UK pledged unwavering support to Ukraine with Sunak referring to the bond between the West and Kyiv as an "unbreakable alliance".

Even during the recent Group of Seven (G7) summit in Italy, Sunak told his counterparts that the UK was behind Ukraine "whatever it takes".

So far, the UK has pledged 12.5 billion pounds (USD 15.9 billion) in support, including 7.6 billion pounds (USD 9.6 billion) in military assistance. Britain is one of the leading donors to Ukraine, alongside the United States and Germany.

Labour has maintained that its support for Ukraine is "ironclad". The party said it would work with Kyiv's government to "isolate Russia diplomatically and boost Ukraine's industrial production".

"We will also work to create a clear path to NATO membership for Ukraine," the party said in its manifesto.

Similarly, the Israel-Hamas war can also play a role among the electorate,

In May, a YouGov poll commissioned by Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Council for Arab-British Understanding found that more than 70 per cent of British people want an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Among those who want a ceasefire, 67 per cent are Conservative voters and 86 per cent are Labour voters, according to the poll.

However, neither party has vociferously called for an immediate ceasefire.

The New York Times, in a recent report, cited polls suggesting that Conservatives could secure their lowest share of seats in Parliament in perhaps a century, as after a turbulent five years of government, their base has 'fractured.'

Some voters are going left, with the party polling around 20 percentage points behind Labour. Others are heeding the lure of the hard right, with a third of those Britons who voted Conservative last time now saying they will support the anti- immigration Reform party, led by Nigel Farage.

Over the last few decades, age has replaced class as the main predictor of political support in Britain, with Conservatives winning more older voters. In the last election, the age at which someone was more likely to vote Conservative than Labour was roughly 40 or older.

Now, polling suggests that Conservatives are only ahead in one age group: people over age 65.

Notably, the Conservatives benefitted with the promise to finalise Brexit in the 2020 elections. However, now the concerns of public are more centered towards issues like economy and health care, followed by immigration .

The voters think Labour is better prepared to handle all three, according to polling from YouGov. Many voters say they feel the Conservative party has left Britain in "a worse state than before it came to power," as per NYT.

It was PM Rishi Sunak's predecessor, Liz Truss, who set off an economic crisis after she announced plans for tax cuts, deregulation and borrowing.

But, now the Conservatives, having been in power for around 15 years under five Prime Ministers, are staring at a mounting challenge, with over half the people who voted for the Conservatives in the last election telling pollsters that they now plan to vote for a different party. (ANI)

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Lifting keel is aluminum plate with lead bulb, which can also be adjusted forward and aft inside a trunk. Seen mostly in Germany.
