RiverBeat releases daily lineup; Jelly Roll to close new Memphis music festival

Details and schedules for the inaugural RiverBeat Music Festival are firming up.

On Wednesday, event promoters Mempho Presents confirmed the daily artist lineup for RiverBeat, which will take place May 3-5 at Tom Lee Park in Downtown Memphis .

The festival’s three nights will be headlined by electronic music combo Odesza (May 3), reunited hip-hop group the Fugees (May 4) and country hitmaker Jelly Roll (May 5).

RiverBeat is replacing the  long-running Beale Street Music Festival , which was paused by Memphis in May last fall following years of financial losses and dwindling attendance.

Earlier this month, RiverBeat confirmed the lineup for its first festival. In addition to the headliners, the roster of acts will include Tennessee rockers The Band Camino, Philadelphia indie outfit Mt. Joy, Austin soul band Black Pumas, New York electro duo Matt and Kim, irreverent rapper Yung Gravy, Alabama singer-songwriter Jessie Murph, roots combo the Robert Randolph Band and Blues Hall of Famer Charlie Musselwhite.

A range of top hip-hop artists including Outkast’s Big Boi, recent triple- Grammy winner Killer Mike , rising star Tobe Nwigwe and hometown heroes  8Ball & MJG  are also among those set to perform.

While festival passes went on sale earlier in March, single-day tickets will be available for purchase starting at 10 a.m. Thursday. Single-day general admission tickets are $99, while VIP tickets $395. Additionally, daily premium parking passes will be available for $40.

Soul has 3 restaurants in Nashville area, more planned for Tennessee: 'It's a vibe'

A restaurant and bar founded less than two years ago is in growth mode, and its owner and creative director say the secret to its success is its vibe.

Nashville native John Smith began as a club and concert promoter whose past clients include Nashville's Oasis, Malibu and Mix Factory. Smith opened his first location of Soul at 6317 Charlotte Pike in 2022.

"As soon as we opened, we had a phenomenal amount of people trying to get in," he said. "It was just stupid."

An Antioch location is slated to open at 2419 Edge O Lake Drive the week of March 24, pending final inspections. The Murfreesboro location, at 2804 S Rutherford Blvd., held its grand opening March 14.

Smith remembers a time when entertainment options in Nashville were slimmer.

"And now it's booming and blowing up," he added.

Still, many entertainment venues, particularly on packed Broadway, are geared toward country music. Meanwhile, not all tourists are here for the honky tonk life. The 300-seat Soul breaks the mold with an R&B and, yes, soul focus, with live music and DJs on weekends.

"We have a Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston kind of vibe," he said. "It's a laid back, listen to good music and eat good food kind of place."

Soul has an Instagram-able interior with a strong floral motif and uniquely designed booths. That, combined with a diverse menu that includes lamb chops, lobster tails, pizza, wings and catfish platters, has drawn upwards of 3,000 customers weekly to the Charlotte Pike location.

Nichole Nunn, who manages Soul's concept and design, said the restaurant's uplifting aesthetic is a big part of the draw.

In bright, unmissable neon, she's installed words of affirmation like "dream big" or "believe in yourself."

"Our collection of stores is geared toward inspiring motivation in an immersive environment," she said. "So many people are going through hard things. Life today can be very tough, and we remind people to seek peace so that they can flourish and fly high."

The music and bright, cheery decor are designed to foster a feel-good experience, she said.

"That's why we say 'Soul is a vibe.'"

Plans are to continue to expand Soul to Franklin and Clarksville, though no locations have been solidified. There's further expansion on the table, Nunn said.

"Our plan is to take the mission of Soul to other states places and all over the world," she said. "The sky was never meant to be the limit."
