Oyster Perpetual

Yacht-Master

Staying on course, mapping invisible routes.

For those at sea, staying on course is a constant challenge. When dealing with the elements, nothing is certain and constant reaction is required to stay in the right direction. Since its launch in 1992, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master has been equipped with a bidirectional rotatable bezel that facilitates the calculation and reading of navigational time. Elegantly combining functionality and nautical style, this watch has made its mark well beyond its professional realm.

A shared quest for precision

Knowing where you are in space and time, setting a course and sticking to it are vital in navigation. Given its function, the watch is an essential tool for sailors to assess their position. Regarded as the most precise horological instruments in the world, marine chronometers have been certified by astronomical observatories since the 18th century. At the time, the ultimate authority for measuring chronometric precision was the Kew Observatory in Great Britain.

In 1914, the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, had one of the brand’s watches tested by this very observatory, which certified it as a chronometer: a first in the watchmaking world for a wristwatch. Since then, renowned sailors, such as Sir Francis Chichester and Bernard Moitessier, have navigated the seas with Rolex wristwatches serving as onboard chronometers.

Matching the precision of marine chronometers was fundamental to Rolex’s watchmaking.

Designed for navigators

Sailing occupies a special place in the world of Rolex. In 1958, the brand partnered the New York Yacht Club, creator of the legendary America’s Cup. Rolex then formed partnerships with several prestigious yacht clubs around the world and became associated with major nautical events – offshore races and coastal regattas.

These strong ties culminated in 1992 with the launch of the Yacht-Master. Boasting the robustness and waterproofness of our Oyster case, this chronometer is fitted with a bidirectional bezel with raised 60-minute graduations to enable navigational time to be calculated and read.

Precious on land and at sea

Available in three diameters – 37, 40 and 42 mm – and in various precious versions – 18 ct yellow, white and Everose gold – as well as in Everose Rolesor and Rolesium versions, the Yacht-Master is unique in the world of Rolex professional watches. An elegant watch with a sporty character, it was the first to be paired with an Oysterflex bracelet in 2015.

In 2023, after testing under real-life conditions by acclaimed helmsman Sir Ben Ainslie, Rolex launched a new version of the Yacht-Master 42. It is made of RLX titanium, a high-performance material, at once light, robust and corrosion resistant.

A veritable ally at sea, the Yacht-Master also elegantly adorns the wrists of navigators once back on solid ground. With many different versions, it is a model that transcends its seafaring origins. It has become a watch for those who know how to change course without losing sight of the horizon, moving freely.

Hi, would love to see some wrist shots of yachtmasters with different belts. Are these really less popular than the subs? Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

I saw a woman at the bar at Cheesecake Factory (wife and I's usual date night haunt) wearing a ER YM, I assume in 38 and it took me forever to pick my jaw up off the floor. It was just gorgeous! Aside from the bidirectional bezel, whats the difference better the Sub and the YM1? Doesn't seem to be anything else aside from appearance?

Sorry what's an ER yachtmaster? Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

The Sub is more popular because of James Bond. The end. In all seriousness, when it comes to the rose gold yacht master, it's a $25k watch ($20k used) so there's the price issue. Even though people are paying $9k-10k for a sub on the used market it's nowhere close to $20k. First, the sub has been around a long time. Second, because of that there's the Sub's reputation/popularity and stigma that comes along with the sub. Remember it's one of the most copied dive watches of all time. Finally, most people I know or come in contact with who have a sub don't care about watches, but they do know the name Rolex and they picked up their sub years ago before the significant price increase especially in the used market. I know several guys who paid $2k-$3k for a sub, but would never pay $5k or $6k like people were paying 3-4 years ago and definitely not $10k like people are paying today.

I bought it because it’s my favorite out of the current catalog.

Who has the new 226659 42mm White Gold YM? those are so nice!

rolex yachtmaster forum

sure it is way less popular than sub.

I wish the SS/Platinum YM had a different dial color. I must admit, the raised numbers on the bezel are mesmerizing.

I like the red hand a lot. Stands out beautifully on the silver dial. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

Love it! Great shots!

Thank you. First day with her. She’s a very unique piece.... thinnest profile Rolex they make yet the 42’ lug to lug gives it plenty of presence. I can feel it on my wrist with the white gold (and I so love the feeling of a white gold watch) but at the same time it’s far lighter than wearing my WG Presidential DD, a WG Daytona or Sea Dweller. The Oysterflex band is the most interesting aspect as I’ve never worn a ‘rubber’ strap before. I keep looking at it and asking myself... “is this a sport watch that’s kind of dressy? Or is it a dress watch that’s kind of sporty?” Fun fact.... it looks close enough like my Sea Dweller that my wife has no idea that I just went out and purchased a new watch!! Dave and Dogbert Thank you. And I swear the wife still has not noticed. Last night I was in my office at home watching a video review of the WGYM42 while wearing it and she walked in. Looked at the screen and said to me “now is not the time to be buying a new watch. We have other things going on....” So not noticed but damn I suddenly feel a bit, guilty? She’s good; she can dish that guilt even without trying or knowing! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have a rose gold Yachtmaster and have the no date sub on order. The rose gold looks great and it’s very subdued with the oysterflex band, but at the end of the day I know the yachtmaster will lose a lot of wrist time when the sub comes in. I feel the sub is definitely more wearable/versatile.

  1. Yachtmaster 40 vs Sub

Posts: 127. The YM is on a higher level in terms of proportions design material finish you really feel it's a luxurious watch. it looks like a sub and is even better but will never feel like a sub. On the other hand the sub is simple. Nothing fancy. It's a robust tool watch, also expensive for what it is.

  2. Yachtmaster 1 pros and cons

Beautiful watch. Pros: much less chunky and boxy than 6 digit, more shapely and wears more like a 5 digit. In daytime the way the plat bezel contrasts against the polished case is AMAZING. it looks like a sun with a white bezel. Loved the color accents of red text and second hand.

  3. Yachtmaster 42 WG Oysterflex

Location: Austin, Texas. Posts: 84. I own and love this watch. The oyster flex with glide lock adjustments is arguably the most comfortable Rolex strap combo . The size is great for me as I have a slightly larger wrist and it has tremendous wrist presence . Also, it can fly under the radar, because it is white gold. And it is unique.

  5. What's everyone's thoughts on the new Yacht-Master Titanium?

    C. Titanium customarily looks and feels cheap, scratches very easily, and lacks the pop and brightness of stainless steel. Need to see this in person to understand if Rolex has innovated here. D. The bezel looks great in renders and like crap in person. Zero contrast means zero visual interest.

  9. Why isn't the Yachtmaster I more popular?

It is not that the Yachtmaster isn't popular. It's just that the Submariner is super duper popular and in very high demand. The Submariner is the quintessential dive watch, the dive watch where all other dive watches are compared to. On the other hand, no company makes a sailing or yachting watch.

  22. Yacht Master blue or rhodium dial?

Rhodium is more balanced in its native state on the bracelet. It blends more with the theme of the platinum bezel and looks "in place" with the bracelet, in my opinion. As such, it's not as "loud" as the blue dial. The blue dial is also stunning, the red seconds-hand pops quite a bit.
