You’re marketing is differentiating yourself from modern boats, you are educating the public to be more discerning and the beauty of your boat is a big part of this. It’s a natural addition to sail that boat in a beautiful setting.

It is no surprise to find more of our boats in the West Country than on the East Coast of England.

Remote Ports – Not as crazy as it sounds. Persuading our customers to join their voyage in many odd places around the world gets easier and easier as travel information is so much simpler to find on the internet. 

Lots of Holiday Products

We have always looked bigger than we really are. Customers are amazed that our original 16-page brochure was all about one boat. We pioneered many voyages with a new twist. Sailing and Walking voyages were promoted via a “Country Walking” Magazine article. Women Go Wild Voyages were given a wider audience through Health & Fitness Magazine. Places on our Marine Wildlife Workshops were subsidised by a government training grant – so students could afford to sail. Island Hopping in the Scillies became a popular speciality. Our 3-day Taste of Salt voyages made ideal competition prizes for newspapers, magazines and trade journals. Exotic Spring Gardens of Cornwall Voyages encouraged lots of brave non-sailors to come sailing in early March! Fresh Seafood Voyages were jointly promoted with a local seafood specialist and trawler owner. The more options you offer the more likely you are to be seen by people with that particular interest.

Not preaching to the converted

There are more people who have never sailed than those that have.

You need to be able to show your boat and voyages to a large audience, not just a specialist market of keen sailors. The Classic Sailing team have never seen fellow charter boats as competition. They welcome more beautiful boats taking new people out on the water, it all helps build the market place, like Hay on Wye being full of second hand book shops.

Understand where the real competition is.

If you totalled up all the berths on traditional charter boats and sail training ships in the UK they amount to very small fry compared to the huge holiday market. One specialist trekking and adventure company like Exodus would provide more holiday spaces than the whole UK charter fleet put together. Other adventure and activity holidays are where the competition really lies. If you are promoting winter sailing in the Canaries you really are competing for people’s holiday money with ski-ing in the Alps or lazing in the sun in Morocco.

Your skippers need to like people

A masterful skipper – aloof and mysterious, calmly assesses the situation, busy with the lonely decisions of command. Does this work on a charter boat? No chance. If you don’t like people this is not the job for you. Your guest crew will hang on your every word, want to know where they are going and why? Many are professional people used to be in charge themselves. They are fascinated by your lifestyle, and the job you do. They will only come again if they like you as a person, feel a useful part of the crew, and that they belong to the boat whilst they are on board.

You can get everything else right but without this you go nowhere rapidly. In the early years you may have to swallow your pride and ask other professionals for help. Classic Sailing offers marketing assistance for a commission, so those owners that work with us only pay on results when we find them customers. We don’t compromise their independence and their are huge benefits to marketing you boat to wider audiences – as part of an eye catching fleet. It is also hugely comforting in the dark days of winter to be able to talk to other skippers turned entrepreneurs or Classic Sailing founders Adam and Debbie about the economic climate and holiday trends.

Your Website needs to make Big Waves in a Huge Ocean

Keeping Classic Sailing websites, , and social media platforms  high on search engines and relevant and interesting to customers takes up the majority of our marketing effort. It has been our main source of new customers for many years. Without giving way too many trade secrets – you need to understand website design and maintain content and design control of your website. We did the recent Website design update in house with technical support from Ali of ‘Sticky Source”. It needs to be constantly updated, vibrant and worth regular visits. To keep up with the other holiday competition you will need to use every trick in the book to get people to your site. If you can’t commit that much time to on line marketing then you may have to swallow your pride and promote your vessel through someone else’s website for a commission.

Coping with enquiries all year round

People dream of holidays at weekends, in the evenings, at work on Monday morning, and some are planning their next holiday in their head 365 days a year. They can ring you at any time, and there is no real season for bookings. As soon as our customers have finished sailing they are thinking of their next fix of fresh air. Credit cards and access to the internet mean more people are booking last minute than ever before. The downside is you need a real person to politely answer the phone in at all times of year. You can’t do it when you are sailing, you don’t want to do it in the late Autumn because you are tired from the sailing season and nor can you do it in the refit season. All in all this does not leave a lot of time for you to effectively market yourself. Mobile offices at sea, only work if you have a large enough crew to entertain and keep guests safe whilst you answer the phone or e mails.

These are the lessons I learned when establishing Arkadaslik Yachting. You don't have to be rich, but you do need to be disciplined and thoughtful. And maybe a little bit crazy...

Starting a yacht charter business sounds appealing  -  spending your days on a luxury yacht, cruising to exotic locales, and hanging out with "the rich and famous".  While there are many benefits to running your own business, especially when it coincides with your boating passion, in the end, it's still a job - and requires a lot of work.  A. Lot. Of. Work!

In addition to the basic principles which apply when establishing and running any business, there are issues impacting the world of boating which must also be factored in to your decisions.

Who's your customer, and what do they want?

There's an often misquoted movie saying - "build it and [they] will come". This is NOT true in the world of yacht chartering. Research your customer requirements first - and then get a boat that suits their needs.

If you want to appeal to companies for corporate meetings at sea, you'll need a high-end yacht with enough cabins to accommodate all guests (and their families) plus a large board-room type set-up. Corporate requirements will be vastly different from those of a family who want to spend the day celebrating Grandma's 90 th birthday, or a couple who want complete privacy for a romantic honeymoon get-away. This isn't an industry where people will take whatever yacht you have to offer. Your boat (or boats) must satisfy your customers' requirements (and budget) or they'll take their business elsewhere.

Different jurisdictions have different requirements for charter boats and charter businesses. Crossing borders can complicate matters. Make sure you know where your potential clientele want to travel, as that may also impact the specifications for your vessel.

What's your niche?

Make sure there's some uniquely defining characteristic or service that you can provide that will set you apart from your competition . There are thousands of yachts of every size and class available for charter around the world. And they all claim to be "the best". What characteristic will compel people to select your charter from all possible options?

What's your background?

If you're new to the industry (as I was when I established Arkadaslik Yachting ), develop a mentoring partnership with an established, trust-worthy business in the beginning. Take advantage of all they have to share - their expertise, network of contacts, customer base, etc. so you don't spend all your time "reinventing the wheel". Pro-actively expand your network of trusted business advisors to include areas such as hospitality, tourism, catering, agriculture and import/export trading. You'll be surprised at how often you need their advice.

Who will be working for you?

Hire qualified and experienced crew and treat them well. Your boat's crew will make or break the success of your venture. All hell can be breaking loose on the boat, but a good crew will deal with the issues in a professional manner, keeping your passengers safe and happy.

What's your budget?

Boats are virtual money pits and expenses aren't limited to the up-front cost. In addition to the initial purchase and all your "normal business" expenses, you have to factor in costs for routine maintenance, emergency maintenance, insurance (don't skimp on insurance), berthing fees, licensing, transit logs and harbour master formalities, crew salaries and insurance, laundry, uniforms, etc. And, you need a contingency fund because all of these need to be paid, whether you have bookings or not.

But, be aware that you don't need to spend a ton of money on marketing or advertising. Once you've got even a hint of a reputation, search for creative "out of the box" opportunities to expand your reach. I wrote a series of articles for the local newspaper to help potential customers understand the benefits of chartering a boat for their summer vacation. I invited influential travel bloggers to join us on trips when cabins would otherwise go empty. I hosted "open house" events while anchored in the harbour to entice our target demographic to come aboard and learn more about the services we offer. And I learned the value of social media as a free marketing tool!

Lease versus Purchase

Checking out the clientele where you live may help you decide on the kind of boat you want for your charter business. If you purchase a boat outright, then you have the freedom to do with it as you please. By leasing a boat, you do give up some freedom, but the responsibility of fixing it falls on that company, not you – so that alone may save you time and trouble. Compare the two ideas to decide which one feels right for you.

The Size and Style of Boat

Do you live somewhere that has a family tourism industry or a region that has a strong business vibe? Different boats exist for all types of target markets. Get a boat that can seat a good number of people comfortably, while still being small enough to be cost effective. Coolers for snacks and drinks are always a good idea, as are binoculars.

If your target is to have a fishing-charter boat business, then bait tanks and fishing pole racks are necessary. For a snorkeling business, you will need various sizes of appropriate gear.

All boats need safety gear, such as life vests, life rafts, as well as a fire extinguisher, as mandated by law and common sense. Keep a GPS on your boat at all times. Make sure it has emergency broadcast capability and that it is in good working order.

Get a Business Name and License

After choosing your business name, you will need to register it, just as you would with any other business. Whoever is driving the boat will need a captain’s license for carrying passengers. A boat-charter business also needs good insurance liability coverage.

  • For many guests, part of the fun of climbing aboard a charter boat involves a friendly, charismatic captain and crew. While employees’ primary concern should be the safety of all passengers, train crew members to chat with customers, identify points of interest and offer to take photos or serve drinks to guests.
  • No matter how entertaining the charter, some guests will prove to be landlubbers. Stock the cabin with ginger tablets and over-the-counter nausea-fighting medication, and direct passengers to take care of seasickness business above deck.
  • Not all passengers will be familiar with charter boat toilets, or “heads.” Take a few minutes to demonstrate how to pump and flush the head while still docked. It’ll save you extra grunt work down the line.
  • Poor weather will sometimes dictate that you cancel scheduled charters. Have cancellation policies in place so that customers know what to expect when their charters are canceled. Policies might include rain checks or refunds.

What Is A Yacht or Boat Business?

The tax benefits must be carefully planned and documented to make sure that the business activity can withstand scrutiny. There are very specific rules and requirements that need to be complied with in order to meet the standard of actively operating a business for profit and taking tax advantages. 

The goal is to structure your boat business in such a way that you have the intent and ability to make a profit! What you CANNOT do, is structure this business with a flawed business plan of “limited charter” and purposely run it at a loss to avoid wear and tear on your boat while offsetting the cost of ownership with business tax deductions. You CANNOT “pretend” to be in business! However this program, when done correctly, offers the least expensive alternative to own a boat!

How to Set up a Boat as a Business

This is a very basic overview of how to set up a boat business and qualify for tax advantages. Before you make the decision to purchase a yacht, consult with us to figure out if this scenario will be suitable for your situation. There are many things to consider. We can discuss all scenarios with you and tailor the program for your personal situation.

  • Figure out the size, type, and configuration of boat you plan on buying 
  • Decide on the destination or location you want to operate from
  • Establish a business purpose – education charter, dive and adventure charters, exclusive luxury charter etc.
  • Figure out what your expected revenue and expenses will be
  • Create a business plan
  • Create a business entity like an LLC or other pass-through entity for your business
  • Plan your tax strategy. The business tax advantages should directly offset the income from your boat business activity as well as the taxable income from any other active source including your regular job (W2 income). Our business plan highlights the tax advantages available to you through the yacht as a business plan. That way you can adjust your withholding and use the tax advantages to offset cash flow immediately!
  • Consider your ultimate goals and exit strategy and plan for it
  • Create a marketing plan for your business – website, social media, introduce your boat to charter brokers, attend boat shows
  • Charter management – It is best to team up with a management company to help manage your boat and establish a clientele if the boat is in the Caribbean or Bahamas

You can purchase your yacht to your specifications including an owner version layout, set the yacht up as a business, operate it with the help of a charter company anywhere in the world, and have your yacht at least partially or fully paid off at the end of the contract period by applying business revenues and tax advantages. 

But do not be fooled. You cannot dump your yacht in a charter fleet for 5 years while collecting a guaranteed monthly income. This is deemed “passive income” and does not qualify you for the section 179 rule and tax advantages. Once your “Yacht As A Business” is set up correctly, you stand to benefit greatly from this concept, but it does require work on your part.

What Is Section 179 Business Tax Deduction? 

People seem to think that the Section 179 deduction is some complicated tax code, but really it is not. Essentially, Section 179 of the IRS tax code allows businesses to deduct operating expenses and depreciate the qualifying equipment purchased or financed during the tax year. Typically, when a business buys new equipment, the purchase price can be depreciated using the MACRS scale which is an accelerated depreciation schedule.

The original target of this legislation was much needed tax relief for small businesses – and millions of them are actually taking action and getting real benefits. So, if you are in the market for a new yacht, the Section 179 rule should definitely be a part of your yacht-buying strategy.

According to this law, when used as part of a business, you can legitimately divert some of the taxes that you’re already paying into the sailing vessel. This in turn, creates equity in your new yacht. Therefore, buying a new yacht and placing it in charter service as a business, makes total sense to reduce cost of ownership and turn tax advantages into an investment. It is vitally important the business is set up correctly and the operation is structured to qualify for the tax benefits and remain in compliance going forward. 

Understanding Section 179 Business Tax Deduction

*The U.S. Congress has halted the Section 179 roller coaster of the past recent years by making the Tax Deduction limit permanent. The limit was raised to $1,160,000. This is good news for yacht businesses, as the owners and their tax advisers now know early in the year that the deduction will be there for them and they can plan accordingly.

Section 179 Tax Deduction Limits for year 2023

Deduction Limit: The maximum deduction for equipment purchased/financed and placed in service by 12/31/2023 is $1,160,000. Businesses can deduct the full cost of equipment as an expense.

Limit On Equipment Purchases: Business owners may spend up to $4,050,000 on equipment, new or used, and claim the full Section 179 deduction. Beyond that amount, the deduction is reduced dollar-for-dollar. This stipulation is to ensure that small businesses, not large corporations benefit from the deduction. For 2022, this spending cap for equipment is $2,700,000.

Example Of Section 179 At Work

To take advantage of the 2023 deductions, you must purchase or finance the equipment and place into service by 12/31/2023. Form 4562 covers this deduction

Equipment Purchases:  

First Year Write-Off:  ($1,160,00 max 2023)

80% Bonus Depreciation Deduction: 

Normal First Year Depreciation:  (20% in each of 5 yrs on remaining amount)

Total First Year Deduction:  ($1,160,000 + $32,000 + 0)

Cash Savings: ($1,192,000 x 35% tax rate)

Bonus Depreciation from 2023

Bonus depreciation comes into play if the Section 179 limit has been reached. The 100-percent depreciation will stay in effect until January 1, 2023, when the first-year bonus depreciation deduction will decrease as follows:

  • 80% for property placed in service during 2023
  • 60% for property placed in service during 2024
  • 40% for property placed in service during 2025
  • 20% for property placed in service during 2026

Charter Boat Ownership for Dummies


More and more people are buying monohulls and (mostly) catamarans and placing them into charter programs all over the globe. Placing a yacht into charter management is a good way to reduce the cost of the boat and also offset the cost of ownership. There are different types of management programs offered by the industry that I will analyze and explain to ensure that you have a good understanding of what you will be getting into if you decide to place a yacht into charter management.

The two most popular programs are the Guaranteed Income program and the Performance (aka Income Sharing  aka Variable income) program that, in all probability, are the two options that you will be presented with across the entire industry. New programs have come up recently, like shared ownership - I believe that trend will eventually pick up steam.


The Guaranteed program is the option offered by most of the large, well-established companies and is very popular for owners who want to have a “no hassle” ownership experience. The owner must qualify for financing which can sometimes be challenging, as most lenders can be sticky on making loans for yachts going into charter. There are, however, a few known lenders, who have certified these programs and companies, and will approve transactions with well-qualified buyers. Once the financing approval has been received, the buyer will then typically pay a 20% to 25% deposit, while the balance of 75% to 80% is due upon completion of the yacht at the factory. The deposit can vary and be as low as 10% - and as high as the buyer wishes, which will obviously facilitate the financing - of the purchase price. At closing, the ratio is usually 20% from the buyer and 80% from the finance company.   See important note about financing issues at the end of this article .

The boats are typically priced fully equipped, delivered to the charter base and ready for charter so there are no more out-of-pocket or surprise expenses for the buyer after the initial deposit. The program is structured so that after that deposit, the charter company pays for all the expenses including, insurance, dockage, maintenance and general operating expenses. The owner pays literally ZERO for the entire duration of the program. The guaranteed payment, which is made monthly, typically amounts to more or less 9% annually of the boat initial value. It is enough to cover a typical mortgage payment, making the entire proposition cash-neutral for the duration of the program. The term varies from 54 to 66 months, so the longer the term, the more guaranteed income you will receive as a whole. This is an important consideration when shopping companies or comparing programs. While the boat is in service, the owners will have exchange privileges allowing them to sail on a similar boat at any of the companies bases worldwide. While there is no charge for the actual charter, be aware that there are fees that will need to be paid, such as cleaning or turn around costs, diesel, water and ice etc, aka Turnaround fees. So familiarize yourself with the exact fee structure with various companies.

The Charter Company is totally responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the yacht for the duration of the program.  However, this does not mean that the owner should not pay attention to it . It is strongly recommended to thoroughly check on your boat every time you are on board for a charter. Make a list of all items to be attended by the technical staff and give it to the base maintenance manager. Then follow up .

When the contract expires, then the boat is “Phased-out” and the owner must then take possession of her. Most charter companies will have a phase-out program written into the management agreement that stipulates that the boat must be handed back in good working order except for fair wear and tear . It is critical for the buyer to fully understand the obligations of the charter company with regard to the phase-out: this component will determine the condition and resale value of the boat after the owner takes possession.  The phase-out should be managed by the owner to ensure that he boat is in the best possible condition and it must involve a pre-phase out survey. There are three options once the program has ended: private use, place the yacht in a second tier charter operation for another 5 years, or sell the boat. In some cases the charter company will trade the boat in, or alternatively assist the buyer to sell the boat and upgrade to a new boat back into the program. Again this is a subject that needs to be addressed on its own, contact and for more information.

  • No maintenance or accounting involvement – hassle free ownership
  • Full financial visibility until the end of program; absolutely no surprise.
  • Cash neutral program – Charter Company pays all operating costs, AND THE guaranteed payment covers the mortgage.
  • World wide owner exchange on similar yachts.
  • No risk if the boat does not charter for whatever reason– guaranteed payment – no downside.
  • Yacht undergoes extensive phase-out maintenance work at the end of program, at the charter company ‘s expense.
  • No control over maintenance for the duration of the program. Maintenance is done at the discretion of the charter company.
  • Fixed return. No upside if the boat charters a lot and generates a large profit.
  • No tax advantages available – income is deemed passive under this program.

The benefit for the charter company with the Guarantee program is that there is no monthly accounting, just a monthly payment. The maintenance is at the companies’ discretion which negates most of owner's involvement, which can be time consuming and often problematic. The Phase out at the end of the program allows the charter company to address all outstanding issues at one time with an independent survey as guidance. The boats are all interchangeable in terms of usage or booking, and so if there is a problem on one boat, the charterer’s party can be switched at the discretion of the Charter Company. As for the owner, his/her income is contractually guaranteed no matter what, so it is of no concern to them.


The Performance program is designed to be an income sharing relationship: the owner is credited for the full net charter income after booking commissions, and then the Charter Company bills the owner for services. While this program definitely yields the owner more income it requires a lot more personal involvement. Smaller companies tend to offer this program as opposed to the Guarantee program because it represents less risk or liability to them.

As with the Guaranteed program, the purchase requirements with respect to financing, down payment, yacht specification, equipment and delivery to the base are the same as stated previously.

With the Performance program, there is typically a split of the net charter income. That split usually ranges from 65% owner-35% charter company, to 80% to the owner and 20% to the Charter Company. The reality, often misunderstood by the boat buyers, is that the split is almost completely irrelevant and used as a marketing catch when it looks very favorable to the owner. Truth is, only the bottom line is relevant . That is because it is what the owner is charged for after the split  (costs of the price of services, booking commission paid to charter brokers, etc. that truly determines the bottom line and not the split formula . Some companies rely entirely on outside booking agents – in which case the commission load is high - while others have a booking office in-house with only occasional use of outside booking agents. The issue here is that the outside booking agents charge 15% to 20% commissions, which means that the owner starts with 15-20% less income per charter. Conversely, the charter company’s in-house booking office might charge less or no commission at all. Therefore, if there is an outside booking agent 100% of the time and the split is 80/20, then the owner will earn $64 on every $100. If there is no outside booking agent, and if the charter company does not charge a booking commission, with a split of 65/35 the owner will earn $65 on every $100. In that example, an 80/20 split which seems very attractive at first, becomes in fact less favorable than a 65/35 split. That is why it is very important to know and understand how the booking commissions work because they have a big impact on the final outcome. 

Similarly, because this is an income-sharing program, the owner needs to know what the costs are, and how they will be billed to him. For example: hourly labor rate, dockage and electricity costs, turn around costs, insurance or any other fixed or variable expenses the owner will be responsible to pay for. It is very important to analyze those costs to see what the actual bottom line income is projected to be. As you have seen, the split does not determine the bottom line and will be affected by many factors: So do not get blinded by this .

Generally speaking, the maintenance of a boat in a Performance program should be better because the Charter Company bills for services and the owner is involved in the management and operation of the yacht. Depending on the type of boat, configuration and location, the Performance program will yield 30% higher an income than the Guaranteed program to the owner. That is a substantial difference. Typically, there is no phase out for yachts in this program. That is because if the maintenance is being done regularly and diligently, then the yacht should be in good condition at all times, including the end of program. If there were any issues that need to be addressed, then the owner would be responsible for the expense. So the phase out notion is not applicable.

As with the Guarantee program, once the program has ended, there are three options: private use; yacht placement in a second tier charter operation for another 2 to 5 years; sell the boat. In some cases the charter company will trade the boat in or alternatively assist the buyer to sell the boat and upgrade to a new boat back into the program.   • Better ongoing maintenance – Owner is involved on a month to month basis and is billed for services – maintenance is not discretionary
  • Much higher financial return with upside potential
  • Owner is able to place the yacht into a Corporation/LLC for substantial tax advantages. Check with your tax advisor for what is the called the Section 179.
  • Boat should generally be in better condition at end of program
  • No protection from downside: if charter bookings drop, or economic conditions or airline fares become unfavorable, the owner is still responsible for all the upkeep costs.
  • No owner exchange / reciprocal privileges as in the Guaranteed programs: Owner can only use own boat at her location.
  • Owner has to be engaged in the operation of the vessel – it is not “hassle free” ownership configuration.

Advantages to the Charter Company are that there is no contingent liability that comes with a Guaranteed program; the financial risk is with the owner. The maintenance is entirely invoiced to the owner and there is no phase out obligation. The Charter Company generally earns less income from this program, with the owner benefitting more than in the Guarantee program, but the trade off is that the risk is shared. The owner is actively involved and the administration requirements on the Charter company side are high compared to the Guarantee program.

Conclusion : In the end, the main aspects to consider for the boat buyer are his/her risk tolerance (financial visibility vs. potential upside, similar to the difference between a bond and a stock); need for tax benefits; attraction to exchange programs between locations vs. sailing in one cruising ground; interest in involvement in the yacht management vs. hassle-free experience.


There is a very important element is to be considered, and most charter companies’ sale staff do not often highlight it. You’ll see why. It goes like this: any loan with a 80% financing (the usual configuration) paired with a maturity higher than 10 to 12 years MAX, i s guaranteed to put the buyer significantly upside down at the end of the charter program , simply by virtue of the typical charter boat depreciation and boat value on the second-hand market. In other words, the typical charter boat depreciation and value on the second-hand market ends up being less than the loan payoff amount. 

Regardless of the buyer’s plans after the end of the management program, it is not a situation anyone wants to be in. Consider this: it’s the end of the management program. You thought, 5 years ago, that you would keep the boat for private use. However, your life circumstances have changed (5 years is a long time) and you are now forced to sell your boat. You’re upside down by $50K. in relation to the real resale value of your boat.  Sounds familiar – remember the real estate disaster in 2009? This is not a hypothetical situation. We see it often and it can be a precarious situation. The reason many sales people do not mention this is because a 5-year financial proforma on any boat, paired with a 15 or 20 year-mortgage looks significantly better than one with a 10-year mortgage, in regard to the monthly and annual cash flow. We think it is borderline deceiving and potentially dangerous.

Preparing a profitable business plan.

Perhaps you are eager to exit the 9 to 5 grind.  Maybe you’re looking for a lifestyle change – or just a change of pace. Perhaps it’s an opportunity to be your own boss.

Whatever your reason for wanting to start your very own day charter business, we applaud you. Who wouldn’t want to spend their days on the water, meeting friendly holidaymakers, making new friends and doing what makes you happy? But what can appear at first to be a long off dream, we can make a reality – and sooner than you may think.

Before getting too excited about the prospect of handing in your notice and jumping in head first, you will want to run through some of the basic fundamentals that you need to cover in order to successfully launch your new business. In the charter world it’s absolutely true to say, failing to prepare is preparing to fail.   Therefore, get organized, do your homework and prepare to succeed! Create a document with your business plan and address all of the queries raised in the following sections. This article should help you identify and highlight all of the critical questions you will need to ask yourself in evaluating the feasibility of this business venture.

Any good yacht broker will be able to help you through this process. It makes sense to start talking to a broker sooner rather than later as they will have inside information on the market, and have realistic expected returns readily available. They will also be able to offer support and connections with charter booking agencies. These agencies supply your initial customer base and are a vital component in the startup stage.


STAGE ONE: Do I want this?

If you are reading this, then this first step is one you may have already taken.  However it is probably the most important stage in this process and worth formally evaluating again.  Ask yourself, do I really want to be doing this? You’ll probably answer yes, of course, why not… right? But too few charter companies understand and consider that this is a serious business.  It will be a lot of fun and a very exciting adventure but at times it will also be a lot of hard work and you will regularly be tested mentally and physically.

STAGE TWO: Assess the market

Where do you want to start your day charter business? Why? Is there a demand for day charter in this area? Are there other areas that would perform better? These are the questions to be asking yourself in this stage. Consider things such as historical tourism trends, and where charter guests come from.  Are they out of town visitors, cruise guests or locals looking to party on the water. How much are others charging in the area, how many charters are they running per year?

STAGE THREE:   SWOT analysis

Using the information you have developed in stage two create a SWOT analysis . If you do not have previous experience using the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) tool, we highly recommend running through this exercise to analyze the local tourism/charter industry to discover how you can be competitive and offer value to your charter guests.   Learn more about SWOT analysis

STAGE FOUR: Offer differentiation

What will you offer, and how does this set you apart from the competition? Don’t be afraid to be different! Will your guests be swimming? Will you offer dive tours? Are dinner cruises an option? Will you target the upper end of the market? if so you will need to match your offering to these requirements. Or will you be competing on cost, targeting backpackers and budget holiday makers? What is currently available and how can you provide a competitive advantage?

STAGE FIVE: The nuts and bolts

  • OperationModel including: length of season, trips per day, average passenger load, multiple locations depending on the season.
  • Day-to-Day operation:  Hired skipper or self-skipperd, crew roles, and customer service.  Will crew assist with handling the boat, entertain the guests, serve guests or all of the above?
  • Launch Date – it can take 6-12 months to build a new charter boat to match your unique requirements!  Seek advice from the shipyard, and take advantage of their expertise when equipping a boat
  • Licensing / local authority issues – your local yacht broker should know the local market and provide valuable insights. Locate your local charter expert
  • Marketing / booking systems – Charter booking agencies and tour agencies will be vital in the initial stages of your operation.  Have your broker provide you with these contacts and connections so you can lay some groundwork before the arrival of your vessel.

When delving deeper into this list, consider how will you find and attract guests, and especially how they will book and pay.  Will you be using a booking agency to manage this? Do you have a business model that handles guests for the whole day?  Do you have beach access and launch access for small boats and maintenance arrangements for larger boats?  Will you do your own accounting or hire someone to do this for you? Will marketing be in house or outsourced? These are all extremely important questions to include in your business plan.  You will need to address each of these in order to successfully launch your new day charter business.

STAGE S IX: Return on Investment Calculation

Having proceeded through the previous stages and given the information you have now gathered, create a profit and loss prediction on your day charter company. The most critical aspect to the overall result of this calculation is the initial outlay on the boat(s) and the maximum number of passengers – these are the figures you will not have control over.  The number of trips per day/week/season, the cost per head, etc are all variables you may be able to adjust later to suit changing market conditions.  You can download an example of a profit and loss calculation for the Seawind 1160 Resort HERE .  In this example we have based our calculations on an operation in Phuket, Thailand.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the Brianna Marie! Captain Owen and his crew were awesome! We had a group ranging in age from 2-83 and everyone had a great time. The boat was very comfortable, the head was clean and easy to use, there were options for sitting in the shade or sun. The snacks, sweets, and drinks were plentiful. We had lobster rolls which were delicious! They even toasted the rolls! I would highly recommend this to anyone and I can't wait to go again next year!

Essay title: Broken Dreams

Luke is jogging down the ground, followed closely by a stalker. He feels the hot, heavy breath of his follower on his neck, and can see his large shadow looming in front of him. He tries to fun faster to get away, dodging and weaving, but cannot seem to shake him; he is with him every step of the way. There is no escape. A call from a mate is an enormous relief; Luke has been rescued. He passes the ball to his mate, and continues running towards goal. Ryley lines up for goal about forty meters out, and with a superbly executed drop punt, sends the ball sailing through the goal posts. He kicks the first goal of the 2005 premiership season, and puts the Falcons six points in front, after only three minutes into the first quarter. The crowd erupts into applause and begins to chant, ‘Falcons, Falcons!’ Luke knew that this season would be a lot better than the last. This year he is going to be injury free and the critics have already ranked him highly in the running for the best and fairest player at the end of the season. The Falcons were also tipped to finish in the top four this year, even though they did not have a full coaching staff.

The game continued with a bounce from the umpire in the centre of the oval. The ruckmen battle it out, wrestling each other to get the tap needed for a break out of the centre. The football falls to the ground and is immediately smothered by desperate players trying to help their team. The umpire blows the whistle and signals another bounce. Again, the ruckmen struggle against each other, but this time the ball is punched forward. Luke jumps high into the air to seize the football, however comes crashing down and lands awkwardly, with other players falling in a pile on top of him. Everyone quickly jumps up and chases the pack of players following the ball. Luke is left lying on the ground, curled up in excruciating pain, holding his knee. The Falcon’s team runners come sprinting onto the field to attend to the injured player, signaling for the stretcher. Luke stands up, ignoring the stretcher, and is helped off the ground by two trainers. He is carried down into the clubrooms, where a physiotherapist attempts to identify the severity of the injury. Luke is in shock. Everything is a blur. The physio is testing the strength of all the ligaments in his knee, and has a very worried look on his face. Luke does not even need to ask what the diagnosis is, he already knows, and it is all too familiar.

Luke lingered in the clubrooms for the remainder of the game, not wanting anyone to see how upset he was. He had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee for the third time in the last four years, and required yet another full knee reconstruction. This meant another season off football. Luke knew his career and his life dream was over. Not many players had ever returned to football after three reconstructions, and he is only 23 years old.

After the game, Luke’s teammates flooded into the change rooms, chatting away happily, congratulating each other on a great game. Beating the Magpies had never been a challenge for the Falcons, especially when they had a home ground advantage. Narrative Essay

Reflect for a moment on the last memorable story you heard, told, or read. What made the story remain with you? Was it a compelling character or participant in the action? An interesting set of circumstances? Was it told in an amusing or serious manner, and did it make you react emotionally?

Everyone loves a good story, and each day we seek out good stories in a variety of media: novels, short stories, newspapers, works of fine art, blogs, even notes and posts on social media pages.

Narration is the art of storytelling, and in this module, you will investigate the ways in which writers employ common narration strategies to engage readers from the beginning to the end of a significant event. You will also look critically at some examples of effective narration as you draft your narrative essay.

What the story-like nature of dreams tells us about dreams.

Most of us experience dreams as stories. In a dream we (the dreamers) are typically doing something with somebody in order to attain some desired but elusive goal. There is effort to attain the goal, there is a cast of characters interacting with respect to the goal, there are events that transpire, there are obstacles preventing goal attainment and there is often a climax when obstacles are overcome and then the story reaches resolution or an end. Dreams are very much like stories—or at least dream reports are very much like stories.

Skeptics concerning dream content appear to argue that the story structure we see associated with dreams comes from the memory the dream report is based upon and not the dream experience itself (e.g. Dennett, 1981). But the empirical data concerning recurring patterns of dream content suggests that this cannot be the case. For example empirical study of thousands of dream reports show that when male strangers appear in the report then physical aggression is much more likely to appear in the report. Can such a pattern come from the reporting of dreams? Should we postulate that memory itself has this sort of imagistic pattern in it? Why does this pattern only occur when memory is reporting a dream? If the pattern is intrinsic to memory then why does it not occur when memory reports on yesterday’s waking events? The most reasonable explanation for the appearance of recurring content patterns in dreams is that the report relatively faithfully reflects the dream and that dreams are indeed real experiences. Neuroimaging studies of the dreaming brain also support this conclusion. It would be surprising indeed if the individual experienced nothing in association with the widespread brain activation patterns we see associated with REM. We conclude that dreams are experiences that very often appear in the form of stories. Therefore we can learn something about dreams by examining the nature of stories.

Many thousands of empirical investigations of the content of dreams generally support the story structure of dream reports-though the story structure is not always linear or pristine or progressive. Metalepses (where we get an interruption of one story in order to begin another story—a story within a story) abound; character transformations are also common and so forth. But interestingly all of these borderline bizarre occurrences in dreams are well known phenomena in literature and narrative genres (e.g. film, comics, novels etc) as well.

Many dream theorists and many narrative theorists have pointed out that both dreams and narratives display the peculiar logic wherein the listener to the dream or to a narrative takes up an interpretive stance toward the "text." There is the paradoxical anticipation of a feeling of retrospection /remembrance after listening to the story. There is both prolepsis in the form of anticipation of later reflecting on the story and an analepsis in the form of retrospective review of the fact the interpreter anticipates that retrospective review or interpretive stance toward the dream.

This interpretive stance towards dreams is not just due to Freud . Cultures all over the world have engaged in dream interpretation. It is a very common phenomenon. When people hear dreams they hear narratives that “want” or need to be interpreted.

The story structure of dreams may also confer on dreams many of the common characteristics of dreams. Stories require temporal unfolding of action, a hero in an ‘agent” slot, interacting characters that undergo transformation into other characters and all have asymmetrical relations to the hero. There is a beginning, climax, and resolution. Given all these story-derived characteristics of dreams perhaps scientists interested in dreams should study narrative phenomena first before attempting to understand dreams!

But even if we grant that many dreams display narrative structure and that because of that structure dreams cry out for interpretation...what does it tell us about the nature and function of dreams? I think that a minimum it suggests that dreams must carry within them a drive to be interpreted by either the dreamer himself or by others. Thus, dreams are often shared with others in pre-modern tribal cultures. By virtue of their narrative structure dreams must be communicative devices or signals whose targets are the waking self and other members of the social group. This social nature of dreams has often been noted but rarely studied. It’s time to put the social nature of dreams on the research agenda.

Fragmented Narratives Are Broken, Independent, and Honest

Before I was a writer, before I stared at an unfonted screen, before I grew to like/then hate/then like again the blue bubbles of track changes, before I became an expert in online faffing when I had two hours to write before collecting my children, before I talked about writing but didn’t write and felt the words slipping away from me… Before all that, I interviewed an acclaimed writer who declared: “Writing a full-length book is like pushing a fucking boulder up a hill.”

I thought of these words whenever I managed to grab an hour to write essays that felt like small, standalone rocks, not the boulder of a book.  

When I had three or four of these tiny boulders, I was shortlisted for a work-in-progress prize and signed by an agent. He didn’t try to tell me what to write, or what shape the book should be (“shape” is a word obsessively used about essay collections, I’ve discovered) and left me alone to chisel my way in. I didn’t think about the shape of the book, but I was interested in the shape of the individual  pieces. Some stories couldn’t be told in an amorphous chunk of text. It just didn’t work for what I wanted to say.

Sometimes the world steers you towards the broken apart, the work that refuses to be glued together, that basks in its un-ness. Often its via other writers—the quasi-religious ecstasy of Maggie Nelson’s brilliant Bluets . If one talks of a color (“Suppose I were to tell you I fell in love with a color?” she begins), there is no singular version of a color. Just as Bluets  is, and isn’t, a book about the color blue. To talk about the multiplicity of her focus, her myriad subjects—love, death, sex—Nelson requires another form. Perhaps there’s a feint line in each of her fragments, invisible under the text, of a different shade of blue for each of the 240 fragments.

I wrote on trains, on my phone in hospital waiting rooms, in the time before my children woke, before the world burrowed into my brain for the day and creativity was postponed for another 24 hours. This book was born out of fragments of time, so its methodology mimics the way it was written: fitfully, out-of-synch, in snatched scraps. The shape (there’s that word again) made sense to me only when I’d finished it.

Outside of writing, a fragment suggests that it’s part of something else. A remnant on the end of a roll of fabric, a shard, a thing that only exists as a component of another object. But on the page, the fragment is standalone. It is its own atomic being. A just-born republic, gleefully declaring its independence.

With micro essays, you can—as short story writers are always told— go in fast . Form is content, content is form.

Composer Stephen Shannon has written music for some of these essays, and I think about notes as fragments, and how sentences should have their own musicality.

I don’t subscribe to the idea that a piece of writing that is in fragments is like tiles without grout. As if the white space is a problem. If anything, I’m like “fuck the grout! More grout gaps! Less tiles!”

The fragment is often guilty of wallowing in its own existentialism. “Look at me! All out here all on my own!”, it shouts. We do not judge it, but encourage said fragment to stop dancing on the table at 2 a.m.

A collection of essays is by its nature, already in fragments. Each piece is discrete and self-contained. There is overlap, sometimes so unconsciously that you don’t see it until you’ve finished writing it, as you flip through the flimsy-spined galley. You can pick up an essay collection, read one, and then ditch the whole thing. It can be read in any order, anti-chronologically, and still fit together. The book’s title— Constellations— happened for a couple of reasons. I began thinking of objects that are whole but comprised of several distinct things. Each essay is a unit. They are autonomous entities in their own right, but are part of a larger framework. A constellation seemed like an obvious choice—especially because I loved astronomy as a kid, and spent a lot of timing seeking out Orion, Cassiopeia, The Big Dipper.

Chronology doesn’t interest me. I don’t like its linear map. I avoid its signposts.                                                 

It made no sense to me to write a memoir. Memoirs feel completist. My book is not just about me: there’s art, blood, politics, ghosts, class, history… A memoir feels like a finish line, and my life is still a kinetic thing. It made even less sense to try and write about a life, in one whole cohesive whoosh. What is a life but a series of fragments?

It’s not just non-fiction. Essays don’t get to own the fragment. The End We Start From  by Megan Hunger is an atmospheric novel in fragments about a catastrophic flood (it feels very timely at the moment) that totals just 17,000 words. Hunter is also a poet, which may partly explain the effect of this impressive act of dilution.

Because I am a woman, I seem to spend more time answering questions about the content of the book than I do about craft. I would like to talk about fragments as much as I’d like to talk about mortality.

I leave you with a final fragment, a meta-fragment if you like, uttered by the narrator in Donald Barthelme’s short story “See the Moon”: “Fragments are the only forms I trust.” It’s hard not to argue with that. Their self-containedness makes them arrows of truth, unreliant on other paragraphs to illuminate a bigger story. Not boulders, but a collection of meteorites…

South Africa’s Black Elites Sour on the President They Championed

In pivotal elections on Wednesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa and his African National Congress party are struggling to keep the support of Black middle- and upper-class voters.

Cyril Ramaphosa ascended to the presidency of South Africa several years ago carrying the excitement and optimism of the country’s rising Black professionals, who saw themselves in him: a measured businessman with intellectual gravitas. He seemed an antidote to the previous administration, which had blasted Black professionals as elitists complicit in the continued white domination of the economy.

But as voters head to the polls on Wednesday for the most consequential election in South Africa since the end of apartheid 30 years ago, Black professionals represent one of the grave threats to the precarious grip on power held by Mr. Ramaphosa and his party, the African National Congress, or A.N.C.

Polls predict that the party will receive below 50 percent of the national vote for the first time since the country’s first democratic election in 1994. And Black professionals could play a significant role in the A.N.C.’s demise.

After defecting from the A.N.C. during the scandal-plagued tenure of Mr. Ramaphosa’s predecessor, Jacob Zuma, many professionals returned to the party in the 2019 election. They believed that Mr. Ramaphosa could clean up corruption and turn around the sluggish economy, according to interviews with political analysts and Black professionals.

The return of these voters to the A.N.C. in the last election helped the party retain a comfortable majority, political analysts say.

Now, though, some Black professionals say they have grown disillusioned with Mr. Ramaphosa, believing that he has not acted decisively enough to reinvigorate the economy and eliminate A.N.C. corruption. Staggering unemployment , poverty, crime and a lack of basic services have left many South Africans fed up with the government.

“It just feels like he has not been bold enough,” said Polo Leteka, a 48-year-old venture capitalist. While she credits Mr. Ramaphosa with turning around some state institutions, she believes that he consults too much before taking action. “I think there’s a balance between consultation and being authoritarian. And I don’t think he’s struck that balance properly as a leader.”

Black professionals are those in the middle- and upper-classes who tend to have some level of higher education, work white collar jobs and are readily able to afford necessities like food, housing and medical care. The cohort has grown significantly since the end of apartheid: It accounts for 3.4 million of South Africa’s 62 million people, according to researchers at the University of Cape Town. Black professionals are just 7 percent of the Black population, but they have a spending power of $22 billion, the researchers said.

Mr. Ramaphosa had an approval rating of 41 percent among the Black middle- and upper-classes in 2022, according to the latest data from Afrobarometer, an independent research organization. But only 30 percent of people in the Black affluent classes said that year that they would vote for the A.N.C. in an election, down from 51 percent in 2018, just months after Mr. Ramaphosa became president.

Bonke Madlongolwana, 25, who owns a wholesale firewood company and is studying law, gave a blunt diagnosis of Mr. Ramaphosa: “I think he lacks a backbone.”

Mr. Ramaphosa has rejected the assertion that he is a weak leader, pointing to recent improvements in the state-owned power and rail companies as evidence that his style of leadership was bearing fruit.

“Those who would like a president who is dictatorial, who is adventurous, who is reckless, will not find that in me,” he said during a recent town hall meeting with young professionals in Johannesburg, where he wore a dark suit instead of the gold A.N.C. polo shirt that he typically wears during campaign rallies. “In me they will find a president who wants to consult. I say I am decisive, but I want to take people along.”

While the party gets most of its support from the poor and working-class, Black professionals, with their wealth and access to power, have an outsized influence on the political narrative that sways voters nationwide.

It might seem paradoxical that economically struggling Black South Africans support the A.N.C. at higher rates than the affluent Black population, which has benefited the most under the party’s leadership. But the Black middle and upper classes tend to be more difficult to satisfy, several politicians and Black professionals said.

They aren’t moved by the public works jobs, free government houses and cash grants that party leaders promise their poor and working-class constituents. Instead, they are interested in seeing corrupt officials prosecuted, competent leaders appointed to state-owned companies and policies that allow their businesses to compete against white-owned entities.

Black professionals say that they also feel the pain of widespread poverty: Many pay what South Africans call the “Black tax,” sending a portion of their earnings home to support jobless family members. Black professionals also resent that government shortcomings force them to pay for private security, schools and hospitals.

For many, those burdens dampen the party’s argument that Black professionals have been able to rise out of poverty because of the government’s affirmative action policies or higher education grants.

“You cannot clap at a fish for swimming,” said Mr. Madlongolwana, adding that it was the job of any functional government to provide educational and economic opportunities for its people.

Critics of Mr. Ramaphosa argue that he sometimes appeared more concerned with placating factional battles within the party than with making difficult decisions that could benefit the country, such as firing ineffective government ministers. But Mr. Ramaphosa’s supporters say his measured approach has spared South Africa from crisis and turned around corrupted state institutions.

“The one thing that you can rely on with his presidency is that there’s a lot of political stability,” said Sarah Mokwebo, 32, who works for the national treasury department.

Mdumiseni Ntuli, the head of the party’s election campaign, said that the A.N.C. needed to do a better job of explaining to the Black middle class the specific reasons the country continues to face challenges, like the residual impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy.

While much of the A.N.C.’s campaigning plays out in spirited rallies in poor and working-class communities, engaging with middle-class voters takes more low-key forms: meetings in private homes, banquet lunches and dinners or forums on university campuses.

Mr. Ramaphosa’s typical stump speech with Black professionals involves highlighting the corrupt institutions, energy crisis, and broken ports and rail system that his administration inherited. He tries to paint a picture of a South Africa pointed in the right direction.

But the A.N.C. is vying against 51 opposition parties this year, and 11 of those have formed a bloc led by the Democratic Alliance, the country’s second largest party. The A.N.C. is still expected to dominate, but if it draws less than 50 percent of the vote, it will need to ally with one or more opposition parties to form a government.

Songezo Zibi, a former journalist and corporate communications official, launched a political party, Rise Mzansi, last year that aims to capture disgruntled, Black middle- and upper-class voters. One challenge, he said, was trying to motivate Black professionals to become politically active.

“The question they will ask is, ‘What are you going to do for me?’” he said. “They hang on the coattails of politicians to help them realize their dreams.”

For many Black professionals, the A.N.C.’s heyday came under Thabo Mbeki, who succeeded Nelson Mandela as president in 1999. Mr. Mbeki focused heavily on policies to ensure greater Black ownership of companies.

But backlash from those who felt that he left the poor behind led to the rise of Mr. Zuma, a populist who positioned himself as a champion of ordinary people. Mr. Zuma derided Black business people as “clever Blacks” who looked down on those with less education and wealth.

When Mr. Ramaphosa took over in 2018 from Mr. Zuma, who resigned under withering corruption allegations, Black business leaders were optimistic. Mr. Ramaphosa had become a billionaire after apartheid through A.N.C. policies that incentivized companies to give ownership to Black people. Many believed that he would champion Black entrepreneurs and was too well-off to be tempted by corruption.

Andile Nomlala, a 40-year-old entrepreneur working in real estate and agriculture, recalled a gathering before the 2019 election in the upscale Johannesburg suburb of Sandton, in which Mr. Ramaphosa met with about 300 Black professionals.

Speaking from a podium, Mr. Ramaphosa vowed to grow Black businesses and root out corruption in the party through good governance, Mr. Nomlala recalled.

“When I left the room there was nothing else in my heart than hope,” Mr. Nomlala said, and he cast his vote for the A.N.C. for the first time since the Mbeki presidency.

But the past five years have left him sour. He feels that Mr. Ramaphosa has been too slow in addressing the electricity crisis and holding corrupt officials accountable.

“We are utterly disappointed,” Mr. Nomlala said. “People are angry with the A.N.C.”
