- Good Times, Cool Boats at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland
The United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland wrapped up its 5-day event on Monday, and what a show it was!
It has been a few years since I’ve attended the largest sailboat show in North America and, I have to say, the 2022 edition was one of the best I’ve been to. My wife Jill and I arrived on Wednesday, “Setup Day”, and walked through the Annapolis City Docks to see a flurry of booths being setup and already shiny boats being made even shinier. Right away, while chatting with friends on the docks, we could feel an energy to the show that I wasn’t expecting on a day when only exhibitors were there.
The show opened with rain on Thursday morning, but by the afternoon it had stopped and from then on, the weekend weather was as close to perfect as you could get. Hordes of sailors and would-be sailors descended on Maryland’s capital city over the next few days and, unofficially, I heard that Friday and Saturday’s attendance numbers were record breakers. I believe it. The lines to get on boats were long, and tents of booths were filled with people browsing gear and talking to company reps. Bartenders at the many watering holes scattered throughout the show were busy pouring beers and, of course, making Pusser’s famous Painkiller cocktails.
Every day at the show, the passion and enthusiasm for sailing seemed to be palpable. As one show-goer told me, “Isn’t this the best?! It’s like trick-or-treating for sailors!”
Another said, “I can’t remember a show this good. Whether you want to book a charter, pick out a new boat, buy gear for your old boat, learn something new at a seminar, or simply walk around and dream about sailing, you can!”
Each time I come to this show, though, it’s not necessarily the boats or gear I look forward to — it’s the people. I’ve been in the sailing industry for 20 years now, 10 of them in magazines, and this is the one place where so many friends I’ve met throughout that time congregate. Whether sharing laughter and stories at after-hours industry parties, stopping by their booths to chat, or going out for post-show meals and beverages, it’s these friends I’ve made along the way that truly make the Annapolis boat show special.
Of course, the first thing people ask me after the show is “What boats caught your eye?” As expected, there were tons of catamarans there and none of them really appealed to me. Likewise, many of the new monohulls were mostly the same with the exception of a few outliers. Here’s what I liked…
Lyman-Morse 46
I failed to get quality images of this boat because it was always surrounded by or packed with curious sailors. The Lyman-Morse 46 is a Maine-built performance cruiser that catches your eye with it’s cold-molded construction, beautifully crafted wood, and sleek look. Indeed, the LM46 is a high-performance sailing yacht that features the comfort and ambiance of a wooden boat but is said to deliver 10 knots of speed under both sail and power. Truly, impressive.
Garcia Exploration 45
If the LM46 is impeccably done in wood, the GE45 is equally well executed in aluminum. The Garcia Exploration 45 is a go anywhere cruiser that I happen to have some experience with. Jill and I delivered a 2015 GE45 in pretty sporty North Atlantic conditions, and then lived aboard the same boat for a month while it was in Alaska. What impressed me about the 2022 version at the show was how Garcia had taken owner feedback to make some changes to the boat, including aluminum toe rail, stainless safety rail, upgraded hard dodger, and more.
Pure eye candy, the J/45 had a prime slot on the docks and every time I walked by I couldn’t help but stop and notice something about this boat. The J/Boats and J/Composites teams collaborated to create a special design for sailors seeking an exceptional sailing experience, but also a boat that is supposed to be comfortable in a seaway or at anchor. Specifically, the J/45’s sail plan seemed well executed starting forward with a bow sprit for flying sails, a genoa, and then a working jib inside of that. The carbon mast was expected, but the carbon boom furling mainsail was not.
Nautor Swan 48
Ok, this boat looked fast simply sitting at the dock. Again, I didn’t get a good image so a stock photo will have to do (the show boat had a white hull), but trust me, the Swan 48 was as awe-inspiring as you’d expect from this venerable boatbuilder. Literally everything on the 48 seemed designed and built to perfection; be it the interior joinery, the cockpit layout, the decks, the sheet and halyard leads, you name it.
Going from big to small, this boat might have been my actual favorite in the show because I grew up racing Sunfish and still do. The Sunfish has been around since the 1950s and the overall design hasn’t changed a whole lot since — that’s what Chris McLellan was looking to change…but not by much. This new boat literally made its debut on the Thursday of the show and it drew a lot of attention all weekend. SERO Innovation kept the Sunfish hull, rig, dagger board, and rudder, and added a new deck. A longer, deeper cockpit is more user friendly, a clip-in dry bag provides some storage, grab handles help with transport, built-in magnets under the deck allow you to bring a custom cup along for your beverage that sits next to the sheet, and much more. Note: The company is currently working to get the boat class legal.

Rising tide lifts all at US Sailboat Show
Published on October 16th, 2019 by Editor -->
The 2019 United States Sailboat Show concluded an epic 50th edition in historic downtown Annapolis, held October 10 to 14, over the holiday weekend as the show hit record numbers.
Educational programs and workshops sold out in advance of the show, rented exhibitor space eclipsed the previous record set in 2017 by over 8%, and overall attendance resulted in a whopping 14.7% increase over the previous best year attendance record set in 2015.
“We could not be more thrilled with the support we received from the industry, our exhibitors, and the massive number of consumers who visited from around the world,” said Paul Jacobs, President of Annapolis Boat Shows. “Not only did they come out in large numbers, but they were excited to see this impressive display and went on spending sprees to support all who displayed.”
Saturday (Oct. 12) brought in its own record numbers, one of which was not predicted as a nor’easter churned in the north Atlantic. The aging city infrastructure was put to the test as an epic tidal flood took over City Dock.
Levels of 4.15 feet above normal record came ashore and remained for over 24 hours, prompting gates to close and booths to be flooded out. Contractors, crews, and show management pressed on as they built walkways, created a makeshift gate, and assisted exhibitors as needed.
Devoted attendees hiked up their pants, took off their shoes, and waded through the water as they joked about the unexpected turn of events. Even with the additional water volume, Saturday’s attendance was just 200 people shy of the all-time record set in 2010.
Big manufacturers such as Jeanneau and Kintetic took new approaches to increase visibility. Jeanneau partnered with other exhibitors on site, such as Harken and Raymarine, to “bring real experiences” to the docks. Kinetic partnered with Annapolis Green to house a refillable water station and “handed out over 400 water bottles” over the course of the weekend.
This year several important awards were presented to sailing industry professionals and exhibitors.
Robert Lipkin, aka Bob Bitchin of Latitudes and Attitudes, was presented with the Sailing Industry Distinguished Service award by Gary Jobson, last year’s recipient.
Excess Catamarans received Best in Show, Beneteau America received Best Display (five or more boats), Bali Catamarans/Dream Yacht Charter received Best Display (under five boats), Sailrite received Best Booth (over 200 sq. ft.), and Vesper Marine won Best Booth (under 200 sq. ft.).
A record boat show exhibitor space, record attendance, and near record high tides combined to make this one of the most memorable boat shows in history.
“Every year seems to be growing.” – Bavaria Yachts “Best Sailboat Show in years!” – Cruise RO Water “We chose the United States Sailboat Show specifically to debut our catamaran.” – Kintetic “Busiest crowds we have ever seen.” – Hanse

United States Sailboat Show kicks off Thursday in Annapolis, here's what you need to know
by John Gonzalez
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (7News) — It's an annual event that draws thousands to downtown Annapolis. The United States Sailboat Show takes place October 14-18.
This is the 51st edition, canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. And the very popular show comes at a time when the boating industry is seeing record numbers and renewed excitement for the boating lifestyle during the pandemic.
Boat manufacturers can't keep up with demand as people have been looking for outdoor activities they could do in their own circle or family.
Experienced boaters and first-time buyers are entering the market in greater numbers. The pandemic fueled a renewed sense of adventure and interest in the outdoors, and that had caused a surge in boat sales.
But with the high demand comes safety concerns. Local boating experts in our area want to make sure those novice boaters get the training needed to wander the waves safely.
The local company SailTime has been working to make sailing more affordable and accessible to those interested in seafaring adventures and for the first time is offering the First Sail Workshop in Annapolis this week and all safety courses are now sold out.

In 2019, the Coast Guard counted 4,168 accidents that involved 613 deaths and 2,559 injuries, according to the 2019 Recreational Boating Statistics Report. The same report found boating accidents caused $55 million in damage to property.
More than 80 percent of recreational boat operators involved in fatal boating accidents have not taken any type of boater education course, according to AmericanBoating.org.
This internationally acclaimed sailboat show is recognized as the world's largest and most prestigious show of its kind.
Boat show goers will enjoy the unique opportunity to board and inspect new models from virtually every major sailboat manufacturer.

Annapolis Boat Shows Announces Five-Year Fall Shows Schedule
Providing the industry with an opportunity to plan ahead, while encouraging strong collaboration efforts with other industry-leading shows.
For Immediate Release (December 17, 2020) Annapolis, MD – While 2020 has been difficult for maritime shows everywhere, the Annapolis Boat Shows are alive and well and ready to take on 2021 with gusto and determination. The Annapolis Boat Shows have announced the next five-year dates for their fall shows. Their marquee fall shows will now take place on the same October weekends for the next five years.
The United States Powerboat Show will be held on the four days (Thursday to Sunday) of the first full weekend in October, and the United States Sailboat Show will follow on the second full weekend (Thursday to Monday). “Our future dates now coordinate seamlessly with the other major boat shows. This will allow our exhibitors flexibility with travel planning, affording them the ability to showcase their boats and products across multiple dates and locations,” said Paul Jacobs, President of the Annapolis Boat Shows.
Following this newly planned schedule, the United States Powerboat Show will run on October 7-10, 2021 and the United States Sailboat Show on October 14-18, 2021 at City Dock in Annapolis.
Taking in the knowledge from lessons learned in 2020, the management team is working hard to produce boat shows that ensure the health and safety of all in attendance. A steering committee consisting of county health officials, representatives from economic development, city management, the boat show producers, and their contractors is on the horizon. Additionally, a 35-page health and safety manual has been drafted, along with logistics and protocols, to allow each show to run safely and productively. 2021 and beyond is looking promising for all and the Annapolis Boat Shows looks forward to welcoming everyone back to Maryland.
