First Details Revealed: wallywhy100

wallywhy100

Wally has revealed the first details about its 69-foot wallywhy100, which is joining the wallywhy200 and wallywhy150 in the builder’s lineup.

Exteriors on the wallywhy100 are by the Wally-Ferretti Group engineering team, with Studio A. Vallicelli & C. responsible for the interior design. The yacht is being marketed as a crossover between a coupé boat and a cruiser with significant volume.

“Whilst beautiful and sleek, traditional coupés do not offer the comfort and livability that today’s owners expect from their boats,” Stefano de Vivo, Wally’s managing director, stated in a press release. “In the same way, larger and more voluminous boats generally don’t offer speed or usage flexibility. This leaves owners with a tough choice: Do they want to compromise on comfort or performance?”

The philosophy of the wallywhy lineup is to eliminate that choice and provide both. For instance, on the wallywhy100, the cockpit is pushed far forward to create more space for indoor-outdoor living areas, but there’s also a slightly reversed bow to help with performance in most weather conditions.

Wally says the wallywhy100 could be used on its own as a weekender yacht or as a support vessel for a larger yacht, thanks to its crew quarters and toy-stowage capacity.

Electrically regulated glass: The en suite head in the master stateroom has glass that can be transparent or opaque, depending on whether owners want the master overall to feel larger or if they want their privacy.

Wallywhy100 Review (2023 Edition)

The smallest yacht in the Wally WHY range is aimed at the owner-operator thanks to its compact footprint and pod-drive propulsion system. Is this the most useable Wally in the range and what is it like out at sea? Read our in-depth review to find out

Wallywhy100 Review (2023 Edition) image 1

Measuring 21.3m (70ft) in length and weighing in at 45 tonnes, the Wally WHY100 is designed with a focus on being a bit more approachable and manageable. It's tailored for owner-operators, making it a more hands-on experience rather than relying on a full crew.

Wally has emphasised indoor-outdoor living across all the WHY series and it's no different here with a huge swim platform and a semi-enclosable cockpit. She has a three-cabin layout and space for the crew. We had some very interesting conditions to test drive her in — far from flat and calm — so let's kick off by exploring what it's like to drive.

Performance & Handling

Wally-wallywhy100-overhead

Around the Marina

With only Volvo Penta IPS available, slow speed control is made all the easier thanks to joystick control. Our test boat had the optional Dynamic Positioning System, too, which holds the boat in position using the GPS if you need to be stationary for a long time.

This ease of slow speed control builds into Wally's ambition to make the why100 more useable for an owner/operator and this Volvo Penta technology certainly goes a long way to taking the sting out of berthing. Having the second control station in the cockpit is useful, too, especially when mooring stern-to.

It's an easy boat to crew, too. The symmetrical decks are safe to negotiate and the starboard side helm door allows the skipper to quickly head on to the side decks or call to the crew. There are no guardrails to be seen so the fenders are dealt with using pins and sockets that are dotted evenly along the bulwarks.

Mooring side-to would be a bit trickier given the freeboard and height of the side decks/mooring gear but mooring with the stern to the dock is a pretty simple process.

Wally-wallywhy100-running-towards

On the water, the quiet 1,000hp IPS1350s provide remarkably smooth and refined performance. Topping out at a healthy 25 knots, this boat cruises happily between 15 and 19 knots. Here, you should expect a cruising range of 300-350nm.

Thanks to the hull design, there's no massive change in sensation across different speeds; it simply pushes through the water smoothly as the revs increase.

Handling the wallywhy100 is incredibly intuitive. The trim assist will adjust the Interceptor blades automatically, and single lever mode allows you to use one throttle to push through the water. It's an easy boat to drive that feels very happy trickling along at 8 knots or romping around closer to its top speed.

Wally-wallywhy100-running-wake

The driving experience is not necessarily about the dynamics but more the theatre of being at the helm of a boat that looks so unique where you are pressed right up against the forward end of the boat looking through the spaceship-like windscreen. We'll go into more detail about the helm and driving position later in the review.

The IPS brings familiarity and it has the usual light steering which reacts keenly to the compact carbon fibre steering wheel. Despite those clean hull lines and the lumpy conditions on the test, the ride was commendably dry, though there was the odd lash of spray across that big windscreen.

The twin Seakeeper gyros weren't active for our sea trial and there was some wallowing to contend with but at rest, they should eradicate the worst of the rolling. It doesn't feel like a boat that you'd want to contend against big rollers with and has the vibe of a fair-weather cruising machine.

Design & Build

The why100 was designed in-house Wally/Ferretti Group engineering team, with Studio A. Vallicelli & C. taking charge of the interior look. This boat, despite its 70-foot length, cleverly plays with your perception of space thanks to its novel twin-deck layout. You struggle to get a sense of scale initially because the layout makes you feel far higher above the water than you'd expect for a yacht of this size.

Wally-wallywhy100-wally-logo

Wally identified a gap in the market for a more voluminous cruiser in the sub-70ft range. The why100 combines the qualities of an 18-21m (60-70ft) coupé boat with the benefits of a large volume. Wally has called her a 'jack of all trades', so whether you want a spectacular day/weekend vessel, a support boat for a larger yacht, or a vacation home on the water with generous cabins, crew quarters, and living areas, the why100 should have you covered.

The why100's layout, which, much like the larger why150 and why200 models, establishes a strong connection between the outside and inside. Instead of splitting the space into multiple levels to create an illusion of more room, Wally opts for a one-level, stern-to-bow approach. This results in a hybrid area on the main deck level that can be enjoyed either closed or fully open for relaxed alfresco dining.

Wally-wallywhy100-terraces-open

Inside, the split staircase is a clever touch that enhances the usability and privacy of the space. The guest areas kick off with a day head that connects to a twin cabin, ensuring convenience and comfort. The forward end of the lower deck houses the crew accommodation, complete with a separate staircase.

Interior Accommodation

The sliding door is a three-part door system that allows you to enclose the saloon completely. Air conditioning adds to the comfort and the door muffles the noise from the engines, which are positioned far back thanks to the IPS setup, which naturally positions the engines further towards the transom.

Inside, you find a sociable seating arrangement where guests can sit opposite each other. There’s a television tucked away on one side, which pops up for use and can be stowed away when not in use.

The split stairways are a clever design, one for guests and the other for crew, allowing crew members to move around without interfering with guest activities.

Owner's Cabin

The amidships owner's cabin has a full-beam layout and it looks lovely. The woodwork in the ceiling is particularly impressive, complemented by integrated speakers and a cleverly designed escape hatch. The lighting is also a real treat, with a cool strip light that mimics the windscreen above, adding a stylish touch.

Big hull windows flood the space with natural light while under-lighting beneath the sofa and bed adds to the cabin's warm look. The panelling hides a wealth of storage options, including hanging space and lockers on either side — and it looks good too.

And the why100 has a neat trick up its sleeve. The ensuite features electrically regulated glass that can switch from transparent to opaque, making the room feel more spacious when not in use. The bathroom itself is well-designed with a big separate shower cubicle, a seat, and a carbon fibre sink.

Wally-wallywhy100-owner-cabin

The VIP cabin has incredible headroom and tasteful décor and the bed itself is a healthy size, with plenty of room to walk around.

The lower deck's woodwork is truly lovely, from the beautiful flooring in the lobby to the detailed finishes in each cabin. Guests will appreciate the televisions and the ability to control the sound system independently from phones or tablets.

The VIP cabin also boasts a large bathroom, complete with a separate shower cubicle that's generously proportioned. On the other side, the twin cabin has a sliding bed configuration, allowing for flexible use of the space. This cabin also enjoys private access to the dayhead via a hidden door.

Wally-wallywhy100-VIP-cabin

The crew space is both practical and surprisingly well-appointed. Opposite the staircase, which offers separate access to the main deck, is the galley. It's a pretty good size, boasting big induction cooking, an oven above, and a fridge below. A decent slice of hull window brings in some natural light, although you can close this off if needed.

The sleeping area features a bunk cabin with a separate bathroom, providing everything the crew needs for occasional overnight stays. While it’s not a huge space, it’s perfectly adequate for a yacht that primarily functions as a day boat.

Helm Station

First impressions at the helm of the why100? Typical wacky Wally. You’re positioned so far forward that it feels like you're sitting in the nose of a fighter jet. The massive central mullion running down the windscreen and the stubby bow in front of you create a unique perspective. The boat is entirely behind you; you’ve got no real perception of the yacht’s size from this forward position on the upper deck.

The lovely carbon fibre Wally wheel takes centre stage, with triple MFDs displaying all necessary information. Carbon fibre is everywhere, reinforcing the helm's high-tech, high-style design.

Wally-wallywhy100-helm-overview

An open-back design means you can hear the sea and engines a bit at the helm, but it’s not intrusive. It’s a fantastic place to helm from — you sit nice and high, with the option to stand, and you’ve got these wonderful high-backed carbon fibre chairs that are classic Wally. The IPS system brings familiar steering and handling — light to the touch, with not too many turns lock to lock. It’s not a sports boat, and it’s not designed to be. Instead, it offers a cool, smooth sensation.

Wally wanted this yacht to be more manageable and easier to run for an owner-operator, and the IPS system is perfect for that. The helm is incredibly user-friendly, and you can even walk through it to access a starboard side door leading onto the foredeck.

At the hydraulic bathing platform, when it's up, you're a fair distance from the water, but when it's dropped down, it transforms into the perfect spot for launching a tender. There's even room for a smaller inflatable tucked beneath the sun pad. Push a button, and the whole thing elevates on its own. The passerelle is a clever bit of kit that doubles as a stairway into the water and to exit onto the quay.

Extending the living space even further, you have terraces on either side of the bathing platform. They’re perfect for setting up a few chairs, creating a spacious area that’s ideal for soaking up waterside views.

Wally-wallywhy100-aft-deck-terrace

The cockpit design is particularly smart. Wally wants you to connect with the surrounding water, so all the fixed seating faces aft. There's a sort of mezzanine effect — exposed to the sun in parts but offering shaded, well-protected spots as well. Thanks to the surrounding windows, you get a nice buffer from the wind, making it a comfortable place to relax no matter the conditions.

The dinette area is semi-enclosed and it's a really cool piece of design, featuring glass doors that slide back to open the space. When open, the breeze flows through, and even when closed, the glass keeps a great connection with the water and sky, with overhead glass panes flooding the area with natural light.

This is the only dining space on this deck, and it's flanked by serveries, complete with cooling space and an integrated sink. The detailing is spot-on, with a tasteful mix of wood and carbon fibre — the wood is used sparingly, but when it is used, it's special.

Wally-wallywhy100-aft-deck-sunset-running

The why100 keeps the Wally commitment to clean lines, and this is evident in the design of the side decks and foredeck. The side decks are symmetrical so you can easily walk around the wheelhouse there and are plug-in fenders, no traditional rails, to maintain those uninterrupted lines.

Design is a primary focus of any Wally, and why100 is no exception. The emphasis here is clearly on maximising the space aft, which does mean the foredeck is a pretty simple arrangement. You’ve got a couple of seats up front, which are ideal for lounging and catching some sun. These seats can be extended to provide room to stretch out,  perfect for sunbathing.

A carbon fibre canopy can be deployed to provide shade over this seating area. However, space forward is limited — primarily reserved for sunbathing and for the crew with anchoring and mooring lines.

Wally-wallywhy100-foredeck

Engine Room

Access is through a hatch in the cockpit, where a ladder leads down into a large void in front of the engines. The headroom between the engines isn't great, thanks to the tender garage directly above, meaning that crawling is the only option once you're between the engines. However, it's all well-insulated, keeping things remarkably quiet.

When you first drop down into this space, you can stand fully upright at the front of the engine room, but past this point, it's down on your knees or sitting. Underneath the section, you'll find the two Seakeepers mounted. The access to inboard components is pretty good, which is a blessing for daily checks and maintenance. Fuel filters are also mounted inwards, within easy reach.

The IPS pods are completely open and easy to visually inspect and work on if necessary. Often, these can be covered, but not here. True to its Ferretti Group lineage, the underlying engineering is spot on.

A wandering light is provided to inspect the far corners, and all the raw water filters are easily accessible. While the space isn't enormous, it's a well-engineered area thoughtfully designed for practical use.

Wally-wallywhy100-engine-room

I wasn't quite sure what to expect out of the Wally why100, as I had only seen the renderings and there was not much information available. However, in the flesh, it has proven to be a well-thought-out and innovative yacht. The idea of having a fully covered space that can open up and connect everyone onboard is truly novel. Whether you're enjoying the water, lounging on the sunbeds, or dining, it ensures a shared, intimate experience that is incredibly appealing.

The propulsion system is worth a mention as well. It feels like a yacht that an owner could easily manage and that's a significant plus in this sector. However, the galley does feel more like a crew galley, which might not be what an owner would want to use regularly.

The why100's quirky design works really well and manages to bring its unique concept to life. This boat is a living space where everyone can feel connected, no matter where they are on board.

Reasons to Buy

  • Spectacular day/weekend boat
  • Impressive helm station
  • Indoor-outdoor flow
  • Natural light throughout
  • Unqiue styling

Things to Consider

  • Galley feels isolated
  • Engine room headroom low

When it comes to choosing the perfect yacht, it's a deeply personal decision influenced by various factors. For those whose primary focus is power and performance, the why100's semi-displacement hull delivers a solid performance with speeds up to 27 knots. But how does it compare to rivals?

If accommodating guests overnight is your main concern, the Wally, with its three-cabin layout, comfortably sleeps up to six guests. However, many of its competitors, like the Pardo Yachts E72 and Absolute 64 , outdo it slightly by providing accommodation for up to eight guests across four cabins. This makes them a better bet for those looking to maximise the number of family and friends onboard. Despite this, the why100 offers a full-beam owner's cabin that boasts an ensuite bathroom, hull side windows, and a sofa, providing maximum comfort for the owner. Similarly, the Arcadia Sherpa 60 and Bluegame BGX73 feature three cabins but can accommodate an extra guest, offering a fantastic level of comfort for longer stints on board.

In terms of cruising speed, the why100 achieves a steady 24 knots, emphasising stability and comfort over outright speed. This approach may not appeal to those who crave the higher cruising speeds of yachts like the Bluegame BG74 and Bluegame BGX63 , both of which hit an impressive 27 knots at cruising. For those not in a hurry, the Arcadia Sherpa 60 offers a more leisurely pace with a cruising speed of 16 knots.

The Arcadia Sherpa 80  impresses with an extensive range of 1,550 nautical miles, making it ideal for longer voyages and has a shallow draft. Talking of shallow drafts the Arcadia Sherpa 60 and Bluegame BGX63 also have this as a feature, allowing them to navigate waters inaccessible to deeper vessels.

Demand for a smaller yacht in our wallywhy range inspired Wally to create a crossover boat that combines the same spirit of bold innovation and volume in a more nimble package. Coming in under 70ft LOA, the wallywhy100 is a coupé that really challenges the genre. At its core is a single flush deck running from bow to stern. Chameleon-like, it adapts stylishly to different occasions thanks to a hybrid inside-outside concept. There’s dining for six, two chaises-longs, a bar, and a galley, where the interplay between opening sides and aft doors can completely alter the ambiance. The wheelhouse can be easily closed off and the cockpit turned into a cozy movie lounge. Wrapped in Wally’s taut aesthetic, the boat’s great volume favors a generous owner’s suite amidships. And in a first for this class of yacht, smart glass sections off the ensuite bathroom, creating a sense of light and space. A large VIP and a twin cabin also defy conventional volumes. A close relationship with the water is as much part of Wally’s DNA as excellent performance, so naturally, the boat has a huge beach area with fold-down wings. The hydraulic passerelle doubles as swim steps, while the whole rear platform lowers to launch or retrieve tenders and toys. And you can revel in the seascape over an aperitivo from the comfort of the forward cockpit.

The wallywhy100 is the logical extension of the next-gen wallywhy range, drawing on the key features that have marked her larger sisters – the wallywhy200 and wallywhy150 – and taking elements from other members of the Wally family to deliver a 21.4-metre yacht that sets pulses racing with its looks and performance as easily as it draws deep, relaxed sighs from its guests on board.

The single living level brings the iconic stealth-style glass superstructure, the open living areas and vast sea terrace into a package that delivers in every aspect, from her performance to her accommodations and her styling. She’s as breathtaking an addition to the market as Venice was a breathtaking backdrop to her debut.    enthuses  “

Wally’s unshakeable belief in the concept designs they create, has resulted in the brand’s well-deserved iconic status. So it is that the wallywhy100 ignores the trend of similar-sized vessels that divide the layout over different levels – with the aim of creating the illusion of more space – by using a single-level, bow-to-stern layout. It delivers a glorious yawn of space that can be enjoyed in myriad different ways.

Central to this single-level approach is a shift in thinking in how we interact with the sea and surroundings when on board, and that in turn creates something unique at this size – an enormous guest area that flows from saloon to dining to deck to terrace to sea in a genius stroke of design where inside and outside are fully interchangeable. It’s all about delivering the ultimate flexible open-enclosed pace where the confining superstructures of a traditional yacht architecture seem to evaporate, leaving nothing but room to breathe, relax and enjoy however you wish.
It all culminates, of course, in that trademark aft sea terrace, a beach deck which on the wallywhy100 stretches to 14 square metres. That includes a hydraulic hi-lo platform for launching tenders and toys up to 3.6 metres in length, and a separate hydraulic passerelle -swim ladder that ensures easy access to the water or the dock. Drop-down wings aft extend the terrace by close to 50 percent and offer unobstructed views across the water.

Further forward, the angular glass superstructure contains the hybrid saloon and dining area plus the wallywhy100’s own bridge of sighs – an internal helm with joystick control that serves as the perfect spot to guide the yacht to its twin-D13-powered 24-knot cruise, and top speed of 27 knots if you opt for the Volvo Penta IPS1350 option.

And, of course, there are those looks.   offers  .

There’s more, too. While the wallywhy100 serves as the perfect dayboat, she’s equally at home as a weekender or for longer jaunts (and after all, once on board you won’t want to get off). There is a full-beam master cabin aft on the lower deck, complete with ensuite that features electrically switched privacy glass that can effectively close the area off or leave it open to maximise the sense of space and light in the cabin. Hull portholes confer views and light, while a wardrobe and extensive storage options make for an eminently practical space.
There are also two guest cabins, comprising a VIP stateroom to port and a twin to starboard, both boasting ensuites and both offering large hull portholes. Crew are also well served, with dedicated crew access both from the main and lower decks without having to cross into guest spaces – a feature seldom seen at this size.

Up on the foredeck, the wallywhy100 borrows from the wallypower world with a dedicated, multi-use lounge that can serve as an aperitivo area or a spot for alfresco meals with its dining table. What’s more, the two seats can be converted into sunbeds complete with headrest cushions facing aft. This transformable area creates an all-purpose living space for guests at anchor or underway and underscores the flexibility the wallywhy100 offers for all types of cruising.

 says  .

 he continues.

If you want to experience the wallywhy100 for yourself, the new model will be showcased at the 2024 Venice Boat Show and the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival.

Wally adds wallywhy100 to high-volume series

  • December 16, 2022

Following the launch of the Wallywhy200 and announcement of the upcoming Wallywhy150, the Ferretti Group builder has revealed the third model in the ‘Wally Hybrid Yacht’ series.

Wally, Wallywhy, Wallywhy200, Wallywhy150, Wallywhy100, 2021, 2023, launch, Stefano De Vivo, Luca Bassani

The Wallywhy100 can top 27 knots

Wally has revealed details of the new model wallywhy100, which follows the 200GT Wallywhy200 that debuted in 2021 and the 150GT Wallywhy150, set to launch in early 2023.

The Wally-Ferretti Group Engineering team handled the exterior and naval architecture of the three-cabin Wallywhy100, with Studio A. Vallicelli & C. responsible for interior design of the new ‘Wally Hybrid Yacht’ (why). As a crossover product, the 100GT yacht combines the qualities of a 60-70ft coupé boat with the volume of the Wallywhy design, offering a voluminous cruiser in the sub-70ft range.

Wally, Wallywhy, Wallywhy200, Wallywhy150, Wallywhy100, 2021, 2023, launch, Stefano De Vivo, Luca Bassani

Wallywhy100 has a volume of 100GT

A twin D13 Volvo IPS configuration offers a cruising speed of 24 knots and a top speed of over 27 knots with the upgraded IPS1350 engines. A tall, slightly reversed bow ensures a dry and safe ride, while a joystick system and Volvo Penta technology offer an easy navigating experience, making her ideal for owner-operators.

Stefano de Vivo, Wally’s Managing Director, said: “The Wallywhy100 was born from a gap in the market. While beautiful and sleek, traditional coupés do not offer the comfort and liveability that today’s owners expect from their boats, while larger and more voluminous boats generally don’t offer speed or usage flexibility. This leaves owners with a tough choice: do they want to compromise on comfort or performance?

Wally, Wallywhy, Wallywhy200, Wallywhy150, Wallywhy100, 2021, 2023, launch, Stefano De Vivo, Luca Bassani

The beach area has fold-out sides

“Through the Wallywhy line, we’ve solved this problem by harnessing all the product and market knowledge we’ve accumulated over the years. Like the Wallywhy200 and Wallywhy150, the Wallywhy100 will be a game changer in many different markets due to its compelling value proposition and infinite usage cases for a wide demographic. In 20 years, the industry will look at the Wallywhy100 as a yacht that dared to be different.”

Wally, Wallywhy, Wallywhy200, Wallywhy150, Wallywhy100, 2021, 2023, launch, Stefano De Vivo, Luca Bassani

Forward view of the saloon

The covered main deck area can either be enjoyed closed or fully open to enable relaxed al-fresco dining, while the 14sqm beach area is home to a large hydraulic platform for launching and retrieving tenders and toys up to 3.6m.  A hydraulic passarelle/swim ladder ensures easy access both to and from the dock as well as from the water. The beach area is completed by folding wings that increase the space by almost 50 per cent.

The foredeck features a multi-use lounge that can be transformed into an aperitivo area with an elevated table in the middle or into a sunlounge by lowering the table to seating height

Aft view of the saloon

On the lower deck, the full-beam master cabin is located aft. The cabin’s en-suite bathroom is made from electrically regulated glass, so it can be fully transparent to enlarge the room or opaque when in use – a first for a sub-70ft yacht. The master also has wide array of closet and storage, and good views through large side windows. The VIP stateroom to port and the twin on starboard also have en-suites and large windows.

Luca Bassani, Wally’s founder and Chief Designer, said: “The yacht’s appearance is 100 per cent derived from its function. The closed cockpit is pushed far forward to provide space for inside/outside living, which gives the Wallywhy100 an eye-catching, sleek but still aggressive look. This is further emphasised by a large, inviting beach area close to the water

“Thanks to its innovative design, the wallywhy100 is a ‘jack of all trades’. It’s a spectacular day or weekend boat for those who want to use it as a support vessel for their larger yacht. At the same time, its ample cabins, generous crew quarters, relaxation areas, and garage and toy storage capacity make it the perfect vacation home away from land. The wallywhy100 is a boat for owners who understand their own needs and aren’t afraid to break the mould.” www.wally.com www.ferrettigroupasiapacific.com

Wallywind110 Sailing Yacht

Founded by Italian entrepreneur Luca Bassani in 1994, Wally initially specialized in sailing boats but has since expanded into building high-tech motor yachts . The new wallywind110, which was fittingly launched on the yard’s 30th anniversary, honors that sailing legacy yet is thoroughly modern in design.

Measuring 100 feet from sheer bow to open stern, the newcomer features a sleek carbon hull, a low-profile coachroof, twin rudders, and a telescopic keel. Showcasing naval architecture German firm Judel/Vrolijk & Co, the first hull is finished in a bright metallic paint that changes color depending on the light.

Wally’s in-house design team worked with Italian firm Santa Maria Magnolfi to create an exterior and interior with a spacious feel. The team decided to relocate all the technical equipment to the stern in order to create a large, 860-square-foot cockpit comparable to that of a sailing superyacht of 197 feet or more. The interior layout includes multiple entertaining areas, an open-plan salon, a full-beam owner’s cabin, three guest cabins, an office, and accommodation for five crew.

The second wallywind110 is already under construction, with delivery expected soon.

This weekend's Bayview Mackinac Race marks 100 years with record number of boats

PORT HURON, MI - Excitement is building along the shores of Lake Huron as the 100th running of the Bayview Mackinac Race is set to kick off Saturday.

This century milestone is made even more special because a record number of sailboats - 332 are registered - are set to sail up the course to the finish line near Mackinac Island.

As a nod to the race’s impressive history, boat crews will be competing on the original course mapped out for the first Bayview Mackinac Race in 1925. This means all the racing yachts will start in southern Lake Huron, then head 235 miles north and west. The boats will pass south of Bois Blanc Island before crossing the finish line that sits between Round Island and Mackinac Island.

Boats from 17 states and Canada are set to participate in what is one of the longest-running freshwater yacht races in the world.

The race begins Saturday, with the first group of boats set to hit the starting line at 11:30 a.m.

Bayview Mackinac Race

“Anyone up the Thumb coast of Lake Huron should be in for quite a show as the entire fleet sails up to Mackinac, and if there is a downwind blowing and spinnakers unfurled it will be a spectacular view from the shore,” said Charlie Trost, race chair for the 2024 Bayview Mackinac.

“The large and diverse fleet reflects the inclusivity and wide appeal of the race, drawing competitors from various regions and backgrounds, which enhances the competitive spirit and camaraderie among sailors.”

Want to get in on the fun? Like Trost said, the Lake Huron shoreline will be a good spot for race spectators to catch a glimpse of these sleek and speedy boats. You can use the race tracker here to see where the fleet is situated.

You can also dress like a fan with the new limited-edition sailing T-shirts featuring Peanuts characters like Snoopy and Woodstock. You can find those shirts and other race gear at the Bayview Mackinac Race online store.

Once the boats reach Mackinac Island, it’s party time. And there’s a big island awards celebration hosted by Mission Point Resort.

The Bayview Mackinac Race follows exactly a week behind the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, which this year saw a fast course, heavy storms on Lake Michigan, a man overboard rescue , and a new record set.

The most boats ever will compete in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club race to Mackinac Island

Billed on its website as the “world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race,” the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to start Saturday.

A record-setting 334 boats have registered for the 100th year of the race, shattering the record of 316 in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, spokesman for the Bayview Yacht Club, which puts on the race.

Bayview Yacht Club says boats start leaving the Black River in Port Huron around 8 a.m. on race day and will continue leaving until around noon. From the Black River, they will proceed up the St. Clair River, under the Blue Water Bridge, into Lake Huron.

The first scheduled start time in Lake Huron is 11:30 a.m., with starts every 10 minutes until approximately 1:30 p.m. The starts may be delayed due to weather conditions.

This year, for the 100th running, the race will follow the original 1925 route and span 204 nautical miles. From the starting point, the boats will head north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said.

The range of boats are expected to finish in between 30 and 60 hours.

The sailors

Teams at all skill levels have entered the race, which draws competitors from around the world.  The highly skilled racers know they will cross the bow of competitors within inches. Still, there's always risk of a crash with the slightest miscalculation.

"Everybody recognizes this is super intense," said champion sailor  Tim Prophit , 65, of St. Clair Shores, past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club and owner of Fast Tango, a North American 40 sailboat.

The teams are vying for trophies and flags to show their accomplishments.

The J.L. Hudson Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division I, and the Canadian Club Classic Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division II.

How can spectators follow the race?

Spectators can go to bycmack.com during the race and click on “RaceTracking” link to watch real-time GPS positioning of all the race boats, or, on your mobile device, download the free app YB Races and select the current race.

Boats will start arriving at Mackinac Island on Sunday afternoon and continue until Monday evening, all dependent upon the wind.

Finishes can be seen from Windermere Point on Mackinac Island at the south end of Main Street.

Sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races are called “Old Goats,” according to the club, while those who have completed 50 are called “Grand Rams.”

"Double Goats" are sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races and 25 Chicago Yacht Club race to Mackinac races. This year’s Chicago to Mackinac race encountered strong winds in Lake Michigan , snapping some boats’ masts and tossing one sailor overboard. No one was hurt.

Volunteers who have served for 15 years on the Race Committee are honored with the title “Old Forts,” as designated by the Race Committee.

This story includes material from a staff report by former Free Press reporter Phoebe Wall Howard and from the Bayview Yacht Club.

Olympics-Paris 2024 opening ceremony will see big police presence but no changes after Trump attack, official says

By Kurt Hall

PARIS (Reuters) -Some 45,000 police will secure the Paris Olympics' July 26 opening ceremony, with over 100 heads of state and government set to attend, a senior official said on Wednesday, adding no changes were planned after the weekend attack on Donald Trump.

The ceremony, staged for the first time outside a stadium, will involve around 80 boats ferrying international athletes on a six km (3.7 mile) route along the river Seine towards the Eiffel Tower, said the official, Lambis Konstantinidis.

Athletes and performers will sail past some of the French capital's most stunning landmarks. But, with more than 300,000 spectators expected to watch, it is also a major security headache, especially at a time of war in Gaza and Ukraine.

"It's a six km route, so it's a huge perimeter to monitor. That's why we need that many (security) people," Konstantinidis, the Games' head of planning and coordination, told reporters.

"Our security plans are very dynamic. They always take into consideration the latest events and try to adapt," he said during a tour of the Games' security headquarters, adding that they were in close contact with counterparts abroad.

Last Saturday's assassination attempt against former U.S. president Trump at an election rally in Pennsylvania has not changed the security plans for the Games, Konstantinidis said.

"We have very close collaboration with the U.S. security services and its secret service. So we are sharing also any information we have," Konstantinidis said. "We're very confident that we're on the same page but we have not had to change any of our plans as a result of that very unfortunate incident."

More than 100 people will be working around the clock at the Games' security headquarters in Saint-Denis, just outside Paris, he said.

Conflict abroad and security concerns at home led the French government earlier this year to raise its security alert to its highest level.

A man was arrested in May in the French town of Saint-Etienne, suspected of planning an attack in the name of Islamic State at the city's soccer stadium during the Olympics.

Top Family Dentist in Santa Clara

The best dental care I have experienced!! I wish I had switched to them sooner. Professional, courteous, and friendly staff made me feel like family, they always listen and take the time to explain things. Dr. Tejero is a wonderful dentist and has taken such good care of mine and my boyfriend's teeth. One of the only places that I seriously highly recommend to everyone. I cannot thank them enough for such amazing and quality service they provide in every single visit.

wally yacht 100

The staff here are very friendly and welcoming. I actually look forward to my dentist appointments, unlike my previous dentists. Everyone is very informative and I appreciate that.

Everyone here is extremely friendly and warm. I have a phobia of dental work but with them, I feel comfortable, I never feel pushed if I have to take a minute. I have had things from just my usual cleaning to moderate work and have no complaints. Now my wife and son have gone and will keep going.

I've been doing bi-yearly cleanings since before the pandemic, and the experiences have been consistent and great! There is little to no waiting time for the appointment. The staff explains everything that is going on, and the cleanings have been painless. They check whether you're comfortable from time to time, and I never had problems.

I have been going here for a while now and as usual, I was helped right away, and my appointment started right on the dot from when I scheduled it. The staff was kind and helpful as always— double checking if everything was alright and if I needed anything. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for good service :)

LOVE COMING HERE! Friendly staff, Dr is very informative with procedures and makes sure you are comfortable!

Dr. Cresma Ugay is wonderful and so is her staff. The office is clean and I felt very safe. I am very grateful to Dr. Ugay for diagnosing my sleep disorder. I am on my way to better health!

I've been coming here for over 2 years now and I'm very happy I switched to Crestpoint Dentals Care. I find the staff super friendly and helpful. The Dentist is very skilled and caring. I never feel rushed and they always check if I'm comfortable during my cleaning.

I have been a patient here for over 5 years and love this office! The staff is great and super friendly. Everyone makes you feel like family. The quality of care is excellent. Plus they have Netflix/Disney+ in each office so you can watch a show during your cleaning!

Everyone here is extremely friendly and warm. I have a phobia of dental work but with them, I feel comfortable, I never feel pushed if I have to take a minute. I have had things from just my usual cleaning to moderate work and have no complaints. Now my wife and son have gone andwill keep going.

I have been going here for a while now and as usual, I was helped right away, and my appointment started right on the dot from when I scheduled it. The staff was kind and helpful as always— double checking if everything was alright and if I needed anything. I would definitelyrecommend this place to anyone looking for good service :)

LOVE COMING HERE! Friendly staff, Dr is very informative with procedures and makes sureyou are comfortable!
