1965 Spencer A Full Keel Ketch

1965 Spencer A Full Keel Ketch

Gig Harbor, Washington

Make Spencer

Model A Full Keel Ketch

1965 Spencer A Full Keel Ketch Classic Wood-boat ambience -- looks and feels like a classic '50's or '60's sweet-sheerline, long-overhang cruiser, yet she has the low-maintenance of an all-fiberglass hull! Just-completed: complete re-manufacture of the spruce main and mizzen masts, to highest quality. This boat has only one owner, her builder.  It is the well-known Spencer 42 fiberglass hull (42 feet on-deck) with bowsprit extending out to 45 feet.  Full-keel; narrow for her length by today's standards, she's a fast-sailer, showing -- on occasion -- up to ten knots on her paddlewheel knotmeter....  Excellent construction -  a four-year build-project "from the hull up", using the gorgeous teak available at the time (20ft pieces never available again!).   Simple systems aboard, by owner's preference.  Center cockpit gives two widely-separated staterooms, and a very spacious salon.  Solidly built, still water-tight to this day -- and well maintained, this Spencer 45 is ready to go. Live aboard or sail the world in this Spencer 45 Ketch.

Make Legendary Yachts

Model Araminta 33 Ketch

2000 Legendary Yachts Araminta 33 Ketch "It is sometimes useful to glance over one's shoulder at yachts which have gone before, to an era in which the materials in a boat had a life of their own, when beauty of form was an aim in itself...Legendary Yachts is doing this, building classic designs using materials of that period and techniques of today. I admire that". Bill Crealock - Yacht DesignerThis classic jewel is a reproduction of L. Francis Herreshoff's 33 foot ARAMINTA. Built by Legendary Yachts in 2000 it was built to remain true to Herreshoff's design and was executed with a high level of craftsmanship. The vessel was shipped to San Francisco as a new boat for the San Francisco Boat Show. She remained there for two years to be shown and to sail the bay, and was then shipped back home where it was re-painted, re-varnished, decommissioned and stored in the building where it had been built. Today it appears as a completely new boat. The masts and rigging are wrapped in plastic and are stored in racks. All the interior components are in protective wrapping. The sails and running rigging are bagged, marked and stowed. Be prepared for the attention you'll received from anyone who appreciates classic yacht design and construction. This is a stunningly lovely boat.

Peter Angelos, combative owner of Baltimore Orioles, dies at 94

As a lawyer, he won hundreds of millions of dollars for workers exposed to asbestos before buying the orioles in 1993.

Peter G. Angelos, a Baltimore lawyer who won hundreds of millions of dollars for workers injured by exposure to asbestos, then became wider known to the public as the combative chief owner of the Baltimore Orioles for three decades, died March 23 at 94.

The Orioles announced the death in a statement but did not disclose further details. Mr. Angelos ceded control of the organization to his son John a few years ago. This winter, the family reached an agreement that would turn over control to a group led by David Rubenstein, a Baltimore native and one of the founders of the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm.

In the baseball world, Mr. Angelos was seen as a hands-on boss: controlling, feisty, demanding and prone to second-guessing the on-field decisions of his top lieutenants. He went through three managers in his first four years at the helm and once considered firing a manager because a player bunted in a game when Mr. Angelos thought he should have swung.

As the managing partner of a group of investors who bought the Orioles for $173 million in 1993, Mr. Angelos fought a prolonged and ultimately losing battle to keep Major League Baseball out of Washington or Northern Virginia. He claimed that another team in such proximity to Baltimore would siphon off fans and imperil the Orioles’ financial stability.

Even after Washington got its own team in 2005, Nationals games were carried on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), which was run by Mr. Angelos and the Orioles. The unusual arrangement, which allowed the Orioles to control the Nationals’ TV rights and set their value, rankled the Washington team’s ownership and led to years of lawsuits over fees for TV rights.

“It’s our territory,” Mr. Angelos insisted.

Mr. Angelos derived his fortune from his Baltimore law practice, where he often put in 18-hour days as he built his business into a legal juggernaut. He specialized in personal injury and product liability cases, and many of his clients were labor unions and union members.

For much of the 1980s, he handled the cases of steel and shipyard workers who claimed to have suffered from mesothelioma — a form of cancer in the lining of the lungs — as a result of exposure to asbestos on the job.

When the number of claims reached 8,700, they were consolidated into a class-action lawsuit against employers and others, which was settled in the early 1990s for more than $1 billion. Mr. Angelos’s cut was one-third of the total, or more than $300 million.

Among other things, the lawsuit supplied the money to buy the Orioles at auction from New York venture capitalist Eli Jacobs, who had declared bankruptcy. Mr. Angelos paid the major share, $40 million. His partners included well-known people with Maryland ties, including novelist Tom Clancy (“The Hunt for Red October”), filmmaker Barry Levinson (“Rain Man,” “Diner”) and tennis player Pam Shriver.

When Mr. Angelos took control of the Orioles in 1993, the team had a new ballpark that was the envy of baseball, plus a loyal regional fan base. About a quarter of those fans made the trip to Baltimore from the Washington area, which had been without a major league team since 1971.

There was an Orioles ticket office in downtown Washington, and the city’s newspapers and TV stations covered the Orioles as if they were the hometown team. Special trains traveled from Washington’s Union Station directly to Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

When there was talk of a franchise relocating to Washington, Mr. Angelos openly sought to block any such move. He argued that the city had twice lost baseball teams because of lackluster fan support.

His wishes were overruled, and the National League’s Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals in 2005. The Nationals and Orioles fought in court for more than a decade over TV rights payments, with the Nationals contending they were owed hundreds of millions of dollars by the Orioles-controlled MASN. A partial settlement was reached in 2023, but the legal battle was not fully resolved at the time of Mr. Angelos’s death.

‘What do I do? ... I work’

George Angelos, the son of Greek immigrants, was born in Pittsburgh on July 4, 1929. At 10, he was hospitalized with a severe case of appendicitis from which he was not expected to recover. In prayer, his mother promised God that if her child survived, she would dedicate his soul to the Virgin Mary by changing his name to Peter.

The family moved to Baltimore during World War II, settling in a Greek neighborhood of look-alike rowhouses. His father ran a tavern. At home, the family spoke mostly Greek.

Years later, as the newly minted chief owner of the Orioles, Mr. Angelos would tell reporters that he inherited his work ethic from his father. “He never took a vacation,” Mr. Angelos said. “What do I do? I do what my old man did. I work.”

He worked for his father’s bar and restaurant business while attending Baltimore’s old Eastern College of Commerce and Law and later the University of Baltimore law school, graduating in 1961.

Mr. Angelos served on the Baltimore City Council from 1959 to 1963 and lost a mayoral primary bid in 1967 to Thomas J. D’Alesandro III , the scion of a Maryland political dynasty and the older brother of former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Growing up, Peter Angelos had been an amateur boxer. As an adult he had the bearing and body language of a fighter. He walked aggressively, his chest thrust forward. “I am not short,” he said. “I’m 5-6.”

He was a staunch unionist. Less than a year into his ownership of the Orioles, when baseball players went on strike, there was talk among the owners of hiring strikebreaking replacement players.

Alone among the owners, Mr. Angelos would have none of it. He refused to call them replacements, describing them as “pickup teams.” He would not field such players wearing the Orioles uniform.

Other baseball owners hated Mr. Angelos for his stance, but he became a folk hero to the players, union members and working-class Baltimoreans. The strike forced the cancellation of the 1994 World Series and was not settled until the beginning of the next season. No “replacement players” or “pickup teams” took the field.

For many years before Mr. Angelos’s group bought the franchise, the Orioles had been among the American League’s best teams, with a legacy that included Hall of Fame players Brooks Robinson , Frank Robinson , Jim Palmer and Cal Ripken Jr., as well as manager Earl Weaver .

At first, the Orioles continued their winning ways under Mr. Angelos’s stewardship, but the franchise was soon beset by internal squabbles that bore the hallmarks of a dysfunctional family.

“There is a soap opera in progress at Camden Yards, and it’s starring Peter G. Angelos, the Asbestos Avenger,” Post sports columnist Tony Kornheiser wrote in 1996. “Since Peter G. blew into Birdland scores of employees have gone flying out the warehouse windows. He has dumped managers and ousted GMs; other suits have quit rather than work for him.”

Mr. Angelos was often likened to stormy New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner , except that “compared to Angelos,” Seattle Times baseball writer Larry Stone wrote, “Steinbrenner has become a model of stability.”

In Mr. Angelos’s first decade as the owner of the Orioles, the team had five general managers. When ace pitcher Mike Mussina agreed to a contract with the Yankees after the 2000 season, Mr. Angelos refused to match the Yankees’ offer of $88.5 million over six years, declaring that players’ salaries had gotten out of hand.

Mr. Angelos, who wanted top Orioles personnel to drive American-made automobiles, ordered Manager Johnny Oates to get rid of his Toyota. He bickered with Davey Johnson, who took the Orioles to the playoffs in both of his two years as manager. At the end of the 1997 season, Johnson resigned on the day he was named American League manager of the year.

After Johnson’s departure, the Orioles endured 13 consecutive losing seasons before Buck Showalter, a former manager for the Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers, took the helm during the 2010 season. The team soon began to win again and the front-office turmoil abated for a time. From 2017 through 2021, the Orioles finished near the bottom of their division before a core of young players led the team to a winning record in 2022 and a division championship in 2023.

Ownership changes

By then, Mr. Angelos was no longer in control of the franchise. In 2020, after Major League Baseball asked the team to clarify who was in charge of the organization, Mr. Angelos’s son John became the public face of the team’s ownership.

Two years later, Mr. Angelos’s other son, Louis, who had worked at his father’s law firm and was a past Orioles executive, sued his brother and mother , saying John Angelos had seized control of the team against their father’s wishes. The lawsuit also said Peter Angelos had a serious cardiac seizure in October 2017 and had “become disabled” by 2018 and was “no longer capable of managing his affairs.”

Louis Angelos alleged that his mother and brother had “plundered” Peter Angelos’s bank account of $65 million. The suit also indicated that Mr. Angelos requested that his family sell the Orioles when he died.

Countersuits were filed, but in February 2023 the Angelos brothers and their mother dropped all legal action against one another. One year later, the family agreed to sell the Orioles to an ownership group led by Rubenstein.

Rubenstein’s group, which included Ripken, reportedly bought a 40 percent share of the franchise at that time, with an agreement to purchase the balance of the club after Mr. Angelos’s death. The sale price of $1.725 billion was 10 times what Mr. Angelos and his investors had paid three decades earlier.

In 1966, Peter Angelos married Georgia Kousouris. They had two sons, John Angelos and Louis Angelos. A complete list of survivors was not immediately available.

While running the Orioles, Mr. Angelos maintained his law practice. In 1996, he won a bid to represent Maryland in litigation against the tobacco industry. The arrangement allowed his firm to keep 25 percent of the money recovered to help the state treat Medicaid recipients made ill by smoking.

The litigation was preempted in 1998 by a national settlement that steered $4 billion to Maryland. Mr. Angelos argued that he was entitled to a fee of $1 billion, but the state legislature balked. He eventually settled for $150 million, leaving hard feelings on both sides.

“The state didn’t want to honor its contract,” complained Mr. Angelos, who retired from his law practice in 2018.

Over the years, Mr. Angelos gave millions of dollars to charities, including a $2.5 million gift in 2013 for a lung-disease center in Baltimore and millions to his law school alma mater.

But he could also be a penny pincher.

Soon after taking control of the Orioles, Mr. Angelos decreed that Maryland crab cakes would no longer be served in the owner’s box at Camden Yards. The reason: Crabmeat was too expensive.
