Best yacht 2023: European yacht of the year winners

 • Toby Hodges
 • January 21, 2023

The European Yacht of the Year 2023 winners have been announced and comprise the best yacht winners in five categories including a special mention award. Toby Hodges was one of the 12 jury members who test sailed each of the 21 shortlisted yachts before deciding on the winners.

yacht design 2023

The European Yacht of the Year programme is a highlight of my year as it gives us jury members the opportunity to assemble our shortlist of the best nominees, seatrial each and every one of them and discuss what works and what doesn’t at sea and in port, in order to choose the best yacht of 2023 in a variety of categories. Our trials were held in La Rochelle and Port Ginesta, Barcelona over the autumn of 2022.

This is the 20th anniversary of the European Yacht of the Year awards, which were presented at a gala event on the opening evening of the Boot Düsseldorf Boat Show on 21 January 2023.

Together we comprise 12 magazines across Europe, each the leading voice on boat testing in their respective countries. The result is indisputably the most thorough, impartial and respected awards programme for new production yachts worldwide.

Best yacht 2023

Best performance yacht.

Nominees: Elan E6 ; Beneteau First 36 ; Grand Soleil 40 ; Italia Y 12.98; Solaris 50

Three Italian pure performance cruisers and two very different yachts built in Slovenia made for a varied and exciting Performance category. Where once we could assume a cruiser-racer was a fairly standard format design, over the last decade it’s been much more the sexy fast cruisers the Italian yards specialise in. But as French yards like Pogo and JPK have proven, we salute lightweight planing yachts – and the Beneteau First 36 is the first real production yacht in that spirit.

Winner: Beneteau First 36

Here’s a yacht that puts the focus firmly back into sailing. The First 36 has been kept inviting and approachable – unlike many yachts that can plane, the look is modest, not aggressive. It’s uncomplicated, unfussy and the result is a pleasure for all to sail. It’s more about what you can’t see, the design and engineering, which should ensure longterm demand.

The small, fiddly heads compartment and lack of tiller options are perhaps the only real detraction from an otherwise brilliant collaboration by Seascape and Beneteau, from concept to build quality.

It was their goal to keep this area of the market relevant and prove a mainstream brand can do it, rather than only niche specialist yards. To create a mass produced yacht at this weight and to this foam-cored quality and one that can bring so much fun is a feather in the cap of the First brand.

Price: (ex VAT) €238,813

Jury comments:

“The complete universal cruiser-racer.” Pasi Nuutinen, Fin.

“The truly modern fast cruiser that dares to be different and that not enough yards dare to build.” Jochen Rieker, Germany.

“Fast but easy going, precise but not nervous, and lightweight, yet comfortable.” Marinus van Sijdenborgh de Jong, Netherlands.

Best Luxury Yacht

Nominees: Oceanis Yachts 60 ; Oyster 495 ; Ice 62 Targa

A spacious production yacht, a premium bluewater cruiser and a highly customised Italian performance cruiser shows the variety on offer in the 50-60ft+ market, while giving the jury some tricky comparisons to make.

Winner: Oyster 495

It is hard to imagine that the decor of a yacht can change its look and feel quite this much, yet the layout of this second 495, Eddie Jordan’s dramatic looking Tuga , is in fact identical to the first boat that I spent several days aboard last summer. At its heart is a wonderfully (Humphreys) designed and engineered luxury bluewater cruiser conceived from the ground up, built in a new dedicated facility to a repeatable quality very few yards are capable of.

The 495 offers consistent passage making speeds in real voluminous comfort – whether enjoyed from the deep cockpit or the best-in-class aft cabin. Deck stowage and mechanical space is also superb. Then factor in the family appeal of Oyster’s after sales and world rally programme and you start to appreciate the premium world this sub 50-footer gives access to.

Price: (ex VAT) £1.35m

Jury comments

“So reassuringly strong, so surprisingly quick in straight line speed, so great to helm, so easy to handle and so, so comfortable if you want to retreat to her living quarters!” Jochen Rieker, Germany

“A true blue water cruiser that makes no compromise in terms of comfort, safety or sailing abilities.” Loic Madeline, France

“The entry level of the Oyster range brings with it the build quality and customisation typical of the yard’s largest models… perfect for a couple’s globetrotting dreams.” Alberto Mariotti, Italy

Best Family Yacht

Nominees: Bente 28; Dufour 37 ; Linjett 39

Typically this category brims with midsize cruising yachts from mainstream manufacturers. And while the Dufour flies that flag, when you put these three nominees together you have a diverse selection of interesting new cruising yachts from 30-40ft to suit significantly different budgets.

Winner: Linjett 39

If you haven’t heard of Linjett before, prepare to be impressed. The 39 offers easy fast family cruising and occasional racing in luxurious comfort and proves that classic needn’t be old fashioned.

Linjett exudes Scandi heritage: a third generation 50-year old brand, it’s run by three brothers and has built 900 yachts from its 19th Century Rosättra yard in Sweden. Sturdy and stable the 39 instils instant confidence and proved a delight to sail. The Linjett is set up to easily shorthand it too, with two winches and a bank of clutches each side positioned aft in reach of the helm.

The interior is offered with two or three cabins and the latter we saw had an excellent layout, including separate shower/wet hanging compartment aft. The joiner work is first class, with traditional mahogany used as standard, or the more contemporary European Oak on the test boat.

This is a premium yacht, but you get what you pay for. It will surprise most and ensure everyone steps ashore smiling.

Price: (ex VAT) SEK 4,208,000 (approx €400,000)

“Practically flawless yacht for offshore, coastal and archipelago cruising, peppered with a big spoonful of performance and a strong flavour of luxury,” Pasi Nuutinen, Finland

“Aesthetically immortal because it is impeccably designed and built with modern construction techniques.” Alberto Mariotti, Italy

“A fast luxury yacht that is also the best family yacht… timeless.” Axel Nissen-Lie, Norway

Best Catamaran

Nominees: Balance 482 ; Catana OC ; C-Cat 48 ; Excess 14; Fountaine Pajot Aura 51 ; Lagoon 51; Nautitech 44 Open

What started out as two separate multihull categories – Family and Performance – merged into one once the jury appreciated the boundaries are quite blurred and that some of these catamarans belong in both camps.

All seven of these 40-50-footers merit close scrutiny for anyone after space and cruising comfort. The decision lies with how much you tweak the performance:comfort ratio.

yacht design 2023

Winner: Nautitech Open 44

We saw a good, interesting battle of the aft helm cruising cats this year in the Excess 14 and the Nautitech. For those who cite a lack of visibility and protection as reasons not to choose this route, try sailing this boat! Direct steering brings so much more helming pleasure – you get the enjoyable feeling and communication more associated with a monohull. I consider this 44 Open to be the ideal size to go distance sailing, with good performance, low draught and space for family and friends.

The interior design is smart and inviting – not as voluminous as some, but certainly enough to be smugly comfortable at anchor. Out of all the multihulls nominated or sailed in the last year, this cat impressed me the most.

Price: €560,800 ex VAT. (€818k ex VAT as tested).

Jury Comments

“This is a catamaran that makes the heart beat out at sea rather than at a boat show.” Axel Nissen-Lie, Norway

“Sailing sensation sets the Nautitech apart. She’s delightfully sensitive in light wind and gets more and more convincing with speed – which she picks up to very decent numbers.” Pasi Nuutinen, Finland

“This shows why the desire for catamaran sailing is spreading: It combines the comfort of two hulls with the good sailing characteristics of a modern yacht.” Lori Schüpbach, Sui

Best Specialist Yacht

Nominees: Astus 22.5 ; Ecoracer 25; Ace 30

Always the most diverse category, once again this did not disappoint with its contenders comprising a plywood IRC scow, a trailable trimaran and a recyclable sportsboat!

yacht design 2023

Special mention: Sustainability – Ecoracer 25

A reusable, recyclable prototype competitive sportsboat. If a ‘garage project’ such as this can successfully prove that the use of more sustainable materials, such as thermoplastic resins, linen fibre, basalt and recyclable carbon, are a viable solution for boatbuilding already, there is no excuse why the mainstream production yards shouldn’t already be employing them!

While most fibre-reinforced boats are destined for landfill, here the composites can be separated from the resin after immersion in a solvent, to make reusable composite products.

This is an on trend one-off racer, which at 1.1 tonnes and 2.7m beam can be towed when tilted and takes one hour from crane to sailing. It’s so much fun to sail, even in the lightest puffs, and won the ORC sportsboat class on Lake Garda on its debut season.

A shame it’s only a prototype, but the future looks bigger and brighter for this startup brand Northern Light Composites, with a 30ft version going into production. Congratulations on taking the initiative.

Price: Circa €80k

“Without changes the leisure boat market will be regulated and potentially fade away. The 100% recyclable Ecoracer 25 has shown that it’s possible to turn green for real.” Morten Brandt-Rasmussen, Denmark

“Shows that a technically complex sailboat can be built in a better way – without compromising on performance.” Axel Nissen-Lie, Norway

Yacht Design Trends To Know In 2023

From earthy tones to natural materials, our Design Director, Sarah Luck , takes a closer look at the trends that will make it big in 2023.

A new year means fresh ideas for yacht interiors. While some trends are certainly not going anywhere, there’s plenty of new inspiration too.

A Return to Nature

Whether it’s through flowing furniture, natural materials & textures or soft accessories, we’re bringing the outside in in 2023.

When you think about natural interior design, you wouldn’t instantly think of yachts, however there are plenty of ways to incorporate organic elements within a scheme to create a calm, harmonious environment on board.

This can be achieved through printed fabrics & natural wall coverings, and flowing organic forms through bespoke furniture design.

Natural stone countertops, splash backs and coffee tables are on the rise within residential interiors. We work with our stone partners to create solid stone pieces that are actually filled with an aluminium honeycomb inner, making them much lighter weight and suitable for yacht interiors.

Earth Tones

Following on from the natural elements, earth tones are key to modernising your space in 2023. I love using a fresh palette of off-whites with splashes of taupe, copper browns and beiges to subtly brighten and soften any part of your boat.

At SETAG, we are constantly developing ways to transform the outdated yacht interiors we work on. One of the most effective ways we’ve found is to either spray timber structures or leather wrap them in beautiful shades of taupe, which instantly freshens Saloons, Galleys & Cabins alike.

Sustainable Design

Within the world of sustainable design, we as designers no longer have to compromise on luxury or quality, due to the ever-increasing choice of innovative brands.

One of my favourites is Kirkby Design from the Romo group. They conducted a study into recycled products and sustainable materials which informed the creation of four innovative collections that reduce the impact on the environment. These incredible materials are constructed from Tencel Lyocell, Recycled Wool, Recycled Acrylic and 100% Recycled Polyester, which is sourced from recycled plastic bottles.

This collection of beautiful textiles is brilliant for everything from upholstery to soft furnishings and certainly still maintains a stunning, luxurious feel. Complete with an earth tone colour palette, you can be sure to see a rise in the inclusion of eco-friendly fabrics in the upcoming year.

Contrast Upholstery

Whether it’s a contrast in colour, texture or stitch detailing, this multi-fabric method to upholstery is certainly making a splash in the marine industry.

With sweeping designs and added practical elements, like enhancing areas of high traffic for durability, we are experiencing high demand for this multifunctional technique.

Excitingly, these designs result in a totally unique design suited specifically for each yacht, the highest level of bespoke upholstery.

A Return to Glamour

Taking it back to the roaring 1920’s, Art Deco is most certainly making a scene within the world of design. A century on, its unique shapes & stylish geometric patterns can elevate any interior to a new height of luxury.

I’m seeing an increased desire for beautifully printed textures and wall coverings, which can be utilised as incredible features that playfully draw your eye into and around a space.

Simple fluted stitch detailing to upholstery is also an elegant way of incorporating a sophisticated deco mood, whilst light fixtures are a simple way of subtly sending your space back to the 20’s.

2023 is the year for soft, modern interiors that evoke nature, peace and comfort. Handmade, bespoke pieces with sustainable credentials will be high in demand too. Combined, this will create interiors which promote wellbeing and uncompromising elegance.

These are the top yacht designs 2023

The exciting yachting trends of 2023. the yachting industry is constantly evolving, offering innovative concepts and technologies that take sailing to a new level..

Merk&Merk

After a year full of impressive vessels launched in 2022, we can expect to see many innovative, elegant and luxurious yacht designs again this year. The latest yacht trends are presented first and foremost at the numerous boat shows around the world. The “boot Düsseldorf” already made the beginning in January and presented the impressive yacht designs of different manufacturers, which are to debut in 2023. As an exclusive yacht store, we at Merk & Merk have taken a closer look at the yacht trends 2023 and show you which yacht designs you can look forward to this year.

Demand for high-end yachts is on the rise

Compared to the previous year, the demand for luxury yachts has increased significantly and more and more superlative boats are showing up to set sail. The construction of ships with the latest yacht designs has grown considerably. Sometimes the famous shipyards have problems to keep up with the orders and projects, which leads to above average waiting time. The demand for yacht designs on the second-hand market is also skyrocketing at the moment. The reason could be the current economic situation. Yachts are considered an attractive investment and a sensible alternative to other investment opportunities, which currently promise little return or even lead to losses. Many who do not want to buy a yacht themselves opt for chartering or booking an adventurous expedition trip. A yacht trend that is gaining in significance this year as well.

The contemporary and classic yacht design

At the “boot Düsseldorf”, which took place from 21.01. to 29.01.23, the Princess Yachts were presented and set a new standard of yacht trends. These yachts completely redefine life on board by rethinking the architecture. The X95, as the first model of the new X-Class, features excellent standards with large customizable spaces that can be used in a variety of ways. Princess yachts offer a unique and flexible boating lifestyle. The flybridge as well as the interior space of the main deck cover almost the entire length of the yacht, creating a super flybridge that gives owners 10% more outdoor space and 40% more indoor space than a conventional motor yacht.

Princess Yacht 2023

Expedition boats as a new yacht trend

One of the yacht trends that already experienced strong demand last year is expedition cruises to extreme shipping areas such as Antarctica and the Arctic Circle. The yacht designs used for this purpose are the so-called explorer yachts, which break through meter-thick ice layers with their massive hulls, are equipped with submersibles, helicopter landing pads/helicopters, state-of-the-art energy-saving, power storage, heating and cooling systems, and expanded storage space. As a result, expedition yachts are currently the second most popular type of vessel in the shipbuilding sector. The yacht design of the 107-meter superyacht Project Icecap from the German shipyard Lürssens is currently in the spotlight.

Day boats in new yacht designs

Day boats are also receiving a lot of attention in terms of sailing yacht trends in 2023. The demand for these yacht designs at shipyards is also increasing visibly. Many boat owners want to use their yachts for day trips instead of spending weeks on the road with the sailor. Of course, luxury day boats should not lack all imaginable amenities. For example, the Solaris Power Daycruisers offer comfortable spaces both inside and outside. Sunbathing areas, kitchen or even a bathing platform with deck shower – the day boats have many luxurious features.

Hybrid engines as a yacht trend

In 2022, a full six superyachts with hybrid engines were already built and delivered. The eco-friendly yacht trend is thus also gaining in importance in 2023 and is in demand from many boat buyers looking for more sustainable solutions. Yacht designs are also rounded out with the use of eco-friendly materials such as synthetic teak or faux leather. Likewise, manufacturers are focusing on the integration of solar panels as alternative energy sources. This makes it possible to switch to the more environmentally friendly navigation mode when the battery is charged. The equipment with modern yacht designs also promises a relaxing time on board.

Yacht Trends: The new marinas

The investment potential in new yacht designs is great. Superyachts with modern facilities, improved safety and extensive services are enjoying great interest. Naturally, boat owners also want the same level of comfort in terms of accommodation and berths. This yacht trend has prompted some of the world’s largest marinas to undertake upgrades. Current projects include the renovation of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore or the construction of the new Lantau Yacht Club in Hong Kong. Complementing Yacht Trends are projects such as NEOM City in Saudi Arabia, Pearl Marina in Doha and Dubai Harbour in the United Arab Emirates.

The Yacht Trends for 2023 definitely make you want to go to sea! Whether superyachts or even day boats – with us at Merk & Merk you will find a large selection of luxury yachts, but also many tips and tricks to make life on board as relaxed as possible. Let us inspire you.

MYS 2023: H2 Yacht Design on their Latest and Greatest

By Sophia Spanton

Joining our host, Shari Liu, on the first day of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show in the Superyachts.com studio was H2 Yacht Design's Owner & Design Director, Jonny Horsfield. In addition to the studio's two impressive yachts at the show, both of which were built in Turkey, the Owner & Design Director shared more about two other yachts, REV and VENTO, both created in collaboration with Turquoise Yachts.

LEONA and JEWELS are two of the current H2 Yacht Design vessels at the Monaco Yacht Show this year. Both spectacular vessels were built in Turkey, however, that's where the similarities end, as Owner & Design Director, Jonny Horsfield stated, ‘ they are both very different', with LEONA built by Bilgin Yachts and JEWELS by Turquoise Yachts. ‘We were given the challenge to design quite a classic looking interior, which people have forgotten how to do!’ commented Horsfield as he went into depth about the construction of these boats.

VENTO, an impressive 87m in length and the epitome of H2 Yacht Design is one of the largest superyachts to ever be built in Turkey. She entails a range of unique features, one of which being a drive-in dock, and her American owner is patiently awaiting her arrival.

Even more impressive in size is LEONA, Bilgin's 180m motor yacht, which the Owner & Design Director shared more details about. With an interior that's a unique hybrid of minimalist and cruise ship style she is certainly a challenge to build, but is also a demonstration of an exciting way of the H2 studio's designing.

To find out about what's on the horizon for H2 Yacht Design take a look at the video above.

From Epic Sailing Vessels to Rugged Explorers: The 10 Best Superyachts That Will Launch This Year

Oceanco Koru Superyacht

With a combined length of 2,929 feet, the world’s top 10 superyachts scheduled for delivery this year are moving away from the idea that yachting is about whose boat is bigger. The trend is now more about mission than size. This year’s launches will be wide ranging, from motoryachts to sailing vessels, explorers and even a giant sportfish.

The list includes offerings from German shipyard Lürssen , which has two 400-foot-plus yachts ready to splash this year, with noteworthy deliveries from other shipyards in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands showcasing different definitions of design, power and performance.

Here are the yachts we can’t wait to see.

‘Koru’ (564 feet) Oceanco

yacht design 2023

Jeff Bezos’ first yacht, Koru , was spotted last week on sea trials. The Amazon founder chose to make a bold design statement by commissioning the world’s largest sailing yacht, not to mention the longest pleasure vessel, motor or sail, ever from The Netherlands. Built by Oceanco, the titanic sailing machine is an incredible 3300 GT, powered by kinetic energy generated by the sails. Besides its massive length, its classic canoe stern, a double-deck wooden coach house and navy hull with a red stripe differentiate Koru from any other vessel on the water. The project remains hush-hush. Even the designers remain a secret.

‘Liva’ (387 feet, 1 inch) Abeking & Rasmussen

Launched late last year and scheduled to be delivered in early 2023, Liva is the largest yacht built by Abeking to date, overtaking the German shipyard’s previous flagship Aviva by 65 feet. The French studio Joseph Dirand Architecture was commissioned to pen both the exterior and interior, which is reported to include a semi-submerged underwater observation room on the lower deck, a supersized pool, helipad, spa with sauna and beauty salon, and a lower-deck beach club.

‘Alchemy’ (216 feet, 5 inches) Rossinavi

yacht design 2023

Commissioned by a private American client, the 216-foot multi-deck motoryacht Alchemy is one of three yachts to be launched by Italian shipyard Rossinavi in 2023. Exterior design is by Philippe Briand, with interior styling by Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design. Little information has yet to be revealed, though it’s visible from images that the custom yacht features an axe bow, drop-down side terraces at the stern and large floor-to-ceiling windows that afford views from all levels.

Project Jag (400 feet) Lürssen

yacht design 2023

The 400-foot displacement motoryacht known only as “Project Jag” is reported to be the owner’s third Lürssen. His most recent is Kismet . It is set for delivery in late 2023. Capable of sleeping 20 guests and 40 crew, the gigayacht is equipped with a helipad, spa, swimming pool, two cinemas, gym and storage for a sub. Italian design firm Nuvolari Lenard designed the steel yacht’s exterior, while UK studio Reymond Langton has crafted what is rumored to be a “bespoke homage to the owner’s lifestyle”—whatever that means.

Project Luminance (426 feet, 5 inches) Lürssen

yacht design 2023

Project Luminance is a 426.5-foot motor yacht that Lürssen claims will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced boats in the world. It’s also the largest yacht due to deliver in 2023. Construction began in 2018, yet few details have been revealed. What we do know is that the seventh-largest project to ever come out of the German shipyard to date features state-of-the-art propulsion systems, advanced navigation and communication systems, as well as next-generation entertainment.

‘T52’ (170 feet) Baglietto

yacht design 2023

The first model in Baglietto’s T52 line, which splashed in February 2023, features sleek lines and aerodynamic grills penned by Francesco Paszkowski Design. Power comes from a diesel-electric-hybrid propulsion system. The yacht celebrates outdoor space, including a large multi-level beach club at the stern with a fold-down transom, oversized sunbeds and a swimming pool with a floor that rises flush with the deck. Sliding windows on the upper deck convert space into an open-air sky lounge and a 78-foot sundeck with a glass-encased hot tub.

Project 406 (170 feet, 6 inches) Royal Huisman

yacht design 2023

The Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman made its name building some of the world’s largest sailing yachts, including 296-foot Athena , but now it’s hitting the record books again with the impending launch of Project 406 , the world’s largest sportsfisherman. Naval architecture, exterior and interior are by Dutch studio Vripack. The firm gave the six-decked aluminum yacht a towering profile promising spectacular front-row views of the big game fishing action. The team balanced its height by a long bow, high bulwarks and uncluttered fishing cockpit.

‘Black Shark’ (252 feet, 6 inches) Nobiskrug

yacht design 2023

Black Shark first began construction in 2019, but all work ceased when Nobiskrug later filed for insolvency. In March 2022, following the German shipyard’s acquisition by entrepreneur Lars Windhorst, work on Black Shark recommenced, with delivery set for 2023. The 252-foot boat, designed by Winch Design, gets its name from its predatory profile and mast shaped like a dorsal fin. A reverse bow, black matte hull and metallic silver superstructure will also help to enhance the marine connection.

‘Ultra G’ (196 feet, 8 inches) Heesen

yacht design 2023

Heesen is renowned for building fast boats, so it’s no surprise that Ultra G , equipped with a propulsion package totaling 22,000 horsepower, with four water jets and a top speed of 37 knots. The Dutch yard hailed this as its most powerful project to date. The motoryacht was commissioned by an avid sportfisherman, with a fighting chair and storage for 40 rods. Entertainment was also a big mandate for the design, stretching from Samsung’s “The Wall” screen, an infinity pool, and a dedicated self-cleaning “dog park” for furry guests.

‘Maverick’ (145 feet, 3 inches) Cantiere delle Marche

yacht design 2023

Maverick is the first Flexplorer 142 to soon be delivered by Cantiere delle Marche (CdM), bought by a young German who is a keen sailor and serial owner of both sailing boats and motoryachts. The owner’s itinerary will see him cruising the Mediterranean, before heading to the Northern latitudes to cross the Northwest Passage and put Hydro Tec’s bold exterior design and running surface to the test. Key features include a custom-built A-frame crane that sits flush on the deck when not in use, collapsible bulwarks that fold-down to reveal a 1,450-square-foot beach club, and an infinity pool at the transom.

THE AC40 WINS WORLD SAILING’S BOAT OF THE YEAR 2023

image1

The AC40 burst onto the sailing scene in late 2022, hot off the easels of the Emirates Team New Zealand Design Office and the Defenders significant investment in creating a class that will be the foundation to a pathway for Youth and Women into the America’s Cup. It has proven a sensation ever since, being adopted by all of the senior teams in the 37th America’s Cup as a training boat as well as being used in the first two Preliminary Regattas in Vilanova i La Geltrú and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

yacht design 2023

The AC40 has also been designated as boat for the Youth America’s Cup and the inaugural Puig Women’s America’s Cup events that will take place in Barcelona in 2024 and usher through to the top echelons of high-performance sailing, the next generation of foiling superstars.

Now, at the World Sailing Awards in Malaga, the AC40 has been announced as the 2023 winner of the Boat of the Year - ‘presented to mark outstanding boat design, innovative concepts and ground-breaking technological advancements that are changing the face of sailing, pioneering change across the world.’

yacht design 2023

World Sailing described the AC40 as, “a highly innovative and technologically advanced sailing yacht. It is designed to bring America's Cup foiling performance to competitive racing, featuring self-tacking headsails and an autopilot control system that maintains stable flight. It incorporates advanced hydraulics, electric assistance, and onboard electronic systems to control various aspects of the yacht, such as foil arms, sail control, and flight stability.

It serves as platform for testing different foil wings, flaps, sails, and masts for America's Cup teams, emphasising its potential for successful designs and technological advancements.

Collecting the award on behalf of the AC40 class was Nick Griffith from Ancasta Yachts, the AC40 Class official worldwide dealer, who attended on behalf of the class and who has been key in promoting the boat to amateur sailors wanting to race at an elite foiling level.

yacht design 2023

Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s Cup Events, also commented on the award saying: “The AC40 opens the pathway for Youth and Women athletes into the big league of the America’s Cup and with now 12 teams forming, training and getting the buzz for high performance sailing, the AC40 couldn’t have been a better platform to deliver on our goals with the America’s Cup and its future.

Undoubtedly the most exciting foiling class to come to the mainstream, the AC40 is re-defining sailing at the top end of the sport and we look forward to supporting the Youth and Puig Women’s America’s Cup next year in Barcelona with incredible coverage of the Finals of those respective events in between the Louis Vuitton Cup Match races and the 37th America’s Cup Louis Vuitton Match itself.”

yacht design 2023

Already the Youth and Puig Women’s America’s Cup teams around the world are preparing to sail in the AC40 with the AC40 simulator also developed by Emirates Team New Zealand which incorporates actual AC40 helm wheels, control devices and instrumentation displays that precisely replicate those on the AC40 yachts.

After the news of the AC40 winning ‘Boat of the Year,’ the awards moved on through the various categories and for the America’s Cup community it was another win with New York Yacht Club American Magic helmsman, Tom Slingsby, winning the coveted World Sailor of the Year in the Male division – his third win at the World Sailing Awards.

Yacht Interior Design Trends of 2023

Yacht Interior Design: A Journey into Opulent Luxury

Stepping aboard a yacht is an invitation to immerse oneself in extravagant elegance. Yacht interior designers have mastered the art of crafting extraordinary spaces that redefine lavishness. With meticulously selected furnishings and intricate detailing, every aspect is designed to radiate sophistication and grandeur.

Dissolving the Divisions Between Indoor and Outdoor Spaces

Yacht interior design trends this year focus on the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Glass doors that slide away, retractable walls, and expansive windows dissolve the barriers between the yacht's interior and the breathtaking vistas outside. Guests can revel in the beauty of the ocean while enjoying the comforts and luxuries of the interior, creating an immersive experience that transcends traditional boundaries.

Preserving the Environment through Considered Design

The importance of sustainability is at the forefront of yacht interior design. Designers are integrating earth-friendly materials and sustainable practices to create environmentally conscious spaces. The use of responsibly sourced hardwoods, recycled materials, and organic fabrics like linen and hemp reflect a commitment to environmental preservation. The addition of living green walls and indoor plants not only adds a touch of nature but also enhances onboard wellbeing.

Modern Minimalism

A Harmonious Blend of Simplicity and Functionality

Modern minimalism has found its place in yacht interiors, beautifully blending simplicity and practicality. Clean lines, clutter-free spaces, and a neutral colour palette cultivate an atmosphere of tranquillity. Smart storage solutions and advanced technology ensure a serene environment, focusing attention on the captivating ocean views and the play of natural light within the yacht's interior.

What to expect from the yachting 2023 industry

Home > LUXURY/UHNW Trends > What to expect from the yachting 2023 industry

Posted by Gemma Harris 18 Jan 2023

2022 was the year that helped revive the global luxury yacht market following the pandemic and its varying travel restrictions. This year, key players are anticipating further growth and more exciting developments, building on the incredible growth seen in 2022.

Staying relevant and on top of the yacht 2023 industry trends will be critical to a brand’s success in the year ahead. Getting ahead of new experiences and developments can put your brand in a more competitive position, helping you to reach and engage with new and existing customers.

So, what will happen this year in yachting, and how can you utilise the latest yacht trends to your advantage?

We consider and explore the latest trends, developments, and growth opportunities that we expect to see from the yacht industry in 2023.

Luxury yachting 2023 ; the year ahead

1 – expedition yachts and remote destinations .

Expedition yachts have become increasingly popular throughout the industry, and we expect this yacht market trend to continue this year. There are many reasons explorer yachts are increasingly popular, including the fact that they enable a deeper connection to exploring nature and our oceans, which is now high on clients’ agendas.

Previously, expedition yachts were designed with simple form and function in mind. Today yacht designers are combining ultimate comfort and luxury alongside high technology and capabilities, allowing adventure and the possibility of reaching the most remote and off-the-beaten-track destinations.

Much of this expedition demand comes from the influx of younger clients, demanding something different from the norm and established yacht itineraries. The industry’s favourite locations will begin to lessen in popularity while other, more remote areas will rise to the fore. Adventures onboard expedition yachts can be had in the Arctic, Antarctic, South Pacific, and remote Atlantic. These are challenging cruising grounds, but ones that are now accessible on the world’s finest expedition vessels.

2 – Boom in charter & new build

The post-pandemic boom and other global supply chain factors have meant a record number of yachts on order or in build.

According to the latest figures from Boat International, there were more than 1,000 superyachts projects on global order books in 2022 – a rise of 24.7% compared to the previous year. Last year was the third year of consistent order book growth, and industry experts expect this trend to continue in 2023. There are now long waiting lists for new build yachts, which is one factor increasing the demand for the charter market.

Another factor resulting in charter market growth is the general increase and interest in the yachting industry, with more people trying it out and experimenting with travel options, driven by the desire to enjoy more exclusive and private travel experiences. The latest reports show that the global yacht charter market was valued at US$ 16.4 billion in 2021 and is expected to show a compounded annual growth rate of 25.6 between 2022 and 2030.

3 – Experiential yachting

What does experiential yachting mean? It simply means everything a yacht owner should enjoy onboard their vessel.

Here are six key takeaways from the International Experiential Yachting Forum 2022:

https://relevanceyacht.com/blog/the-best-experiential-yachting-forum-insights-2022/

4 – Greener solutions

Improving the industry’s footprint has been one initiative creeping higher and higher up the agenda. These eco-friendly advancements, from advanced green propulsion systems to sustainable onboard materials and carbon footprint offsetting, are now front a centre, with boat shows , such as the annual Monaco Yacht Show, dedicating an entire exhibition to sustainable initiatives. This year will see further commitments and more alternative solutions coming to the fore.

With more brokerages promoting the sustainability features of their yachts, designers and builders are integrating more alternative solutions to the businesses and brands servicing the industry. Every stakeholder should address the industry’s environmental impact and how they can minimise this in 2023 and beyond.

5 – New technology

The technology used onboard superyachts today and in recent years has developed extensively. This year we will see this continue, improving and enhancing the yacht experience. In terms of everyday technology, smart yachts will be the norm, increasing efficiency and the onboard experience. We have already seen the dawn of paperless yachts with charts and the increased uptake in cloud-based platforms.

In terms of other yachting 2023 technologies, the role of AI is picking up the pace throughout the industry, specifically through developments within design and navigational technology. Alongside AI, the realms of VR are also gaining momentum within the industry, with uses also in yacht design and entertainment onboard. This year will see even more innovative entertainment solutions for onboard experiences, enabling a more immersive yachting experience.

6 – Emerging markets

The past couple of years has seen a general shift in the interest in the yachting sector, partly driven by the growing number of Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals over the past couple of years. The global number of UHNWIs peaked at more than 400,000 individuals in 2021, according to the Wealth-X report. While the number of UHNWIs dipped by around 6% in 2022 (to 392,410) due to economic and political volatility, the number of global UHNWIs remains high compared to a decade ago.

While North America and Europe remain the world’s largest yacht consumers, 2023 yacht industry trends point to new and emerging markets. These include Southeast Asia, where leading brokerages are now expanding to. Other noteworthy markets are Japan and Canada, with industry experts forecasting enhanced levels of growth. Alongside these emerging markets, particular sectors within the industry look favourable, such as the sailing and catamaran yacht markets.

7 – GenZ influence

The Forbes 400 list last year identified 10 billionaires under 40. Over the next two decades, the average age of superyacht owners is predicted to be between 35 and 45. More younger clients will enter the 2023 yacht industry , whether for charter or purchase, and the influence of Gen Z will change the face of yachting.

The demands and experiences sought by this new target audience differ from the yachting industry’s traditional target audience. Younger clients demand bespoke and different design features with more innovative technology and a focus on wellness features. The use of the yacht will also change to meet this shift in the target audience, whether the vessel is used for remote working, adventure, or even philanthropy projects.

8 – Design tweaks

This year, 2023 yacht trends show that there will be further design shifts within the industry. The importance of sustainability and the need to conserve our oceans will continue to filter through to design. For designers to get ahead, they will need to use a more circular approach to design, using sustainable and responsible materials. Biophilic design will be more prominent throughout the industry, maximising natural light and merging the exterior and interior spaces onboard.

The younger generation will drive many of these design changes in how they want to use their yachts. For example, many expedition trips are usually longer; therefore, comfort will move higher up the agenda, replacing the traditional desire for a yacht as a status symbol. Clients will want to feel more at home and therefore include increased personalisation within the design, creating spaces where clients can switch off and feel comfortable.

The use of new technologies will also impact design features, predominately within the entertainment sector. Gone are standard AV systems; new entertainment technology concepts will evolve this year.

Exciting yacht design doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. But a fresh view always helps. That’s why more yacht owners are looking for land-based architects and designers for their new build and refit interiors, preferring a cross-pollination of ideas over the tried and true.

The first owner to shy away from the traditional yacht designer set was billionaire Lukas Lundin, who tasked Italian architect Cristina Gherardi Benardeau to design the interior of the 274-foot Savannah. The Feadship, launched in 2015, is largely remembered as the first superyacht with a hybrid propulsion package. But the interior is just as radical.

Since then, a number of owners and boatbuilders have employed residential architects to do interior designs, as well as offer exterior flourishes (though naval architects complete the structures and running surfaces.) Rome architect Achille Salvagni has done projects for Rossinavi and Azimut, Lord Norman Foster created a series that later became the YachtPlus fleet, Lazzarini & Pickering designed the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, and next year, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez will show their talents on Azimut’s SeaDeck Series.

Even residential stalwarts like Zaha Hadid Architects can’t help but experiment with nautical projects. Following the 2016 reveal of the firm’s Unique Circle Yachts series, the studio collaborated with Vitruvius Yachts this year on Britain’s new “royal yacht” project. And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

Architect Roberto Palomba has been designing houses for decades. His Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, includes the Italian Consulate in Detroit, home décor and even tableware, among its past projects. His first yacht is the Amer F100, which features a unique “Glass Cabin” as the main salon. It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told Robb Report during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.

He looked beyond the pool of yachting talent for a designer who could create a signature statement inside the 246-foot Admiral. The owner eventually decided on Paris design house Jouin Manku, an experienced architecture and industrial design studio, without a single yacht to its name. Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located. “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told Robb Report. “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting.

Refits are also getting design overhauls by non-yacht designers. He called on Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects for what turned out to be a major refit in a nearly record 300 days. The architectural studio is experienced in real estate, including a few of the owner’s private properties. But yacht refits are a recent addition to its portfolio. “The key to any project’s success is to know the person, their lifestyle and the way they think,” architect Paolo Bizzozero said. “Only with these three ingredients can you remedy a truly bespoke environment that works for them and for their life.” Key additions include a 1,334-sq. ft. sundeck, with a large dining table and teppanyaki grill. Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.

2023 Boat and Yacht Design

Spring 2023 is officially here, meaning the weather is warming up with sunny days, perfect for relaxing on a boat. With the new season comes new design trends. Want to stay in the loop? Check out these design trends for your boat’s interior décor in Spring 2023.

1. Earthy Tones

This year, we’re shifting towards natural and earthy tones such as sandy beiges, soft browns, and muted greens. These colors can be incorporated through furniture, bedding, and décor to create a calming atmosphere in your boat.

2. Natural Materials

Similar to the trend towards earthy tones, we’re also shifting towards raw materials such as wood, stone, and rattan. These materials can be used for furniture, décor, and even flooring to create a cohesive and harmonious look. Luxury Lifestyle Magazine says sustainable luxury will be a term to grow as the focus moves towards longevity, quality, and eco-friendly design.

3. Bold Colors and Textured Fabrics

While earthy tones are on-trend, bold and bright colors are making a comeback . Consider incorporating a pop of color through accent pieces such as throw pillows for your salon and beds, artwork, or a statement wall. Incorporating textured fabrics such as boucle, linen, and wool to add depth and interest to your boat’s interior. These fabrics add a tactile element to your décor and can be used for upholstery, pillows, and throws.

At YachtBedding.com, we have a huge selection of fabrics you can choose from for your bed sheets, coverlets, duvets, shams and throw pillows.

4. Multifunctional Spaces

Space is at a premium in a boat, so consider designing your interior as multifunctional as possible. For example, a dining table that doubles as a workspace or a bed with built-in storage. Think of ways to utilize everything you got for more than one purpose. Look for furniture that does double duty, like ottomans or beds with built-in storage. And remember, vertical storage – shelving and hanging organizers can be a lifesaver.

Did you know that YachtBedding.com offers the option to add a hinge to our plush boat mattresses ? This enables space saving if you have storage underneath.

5. Fungi Furniture

Coinciding with the sustainability factor identified earlier, it’s likely that other materials are sourced for design. Fashion is already seeing new source materials, like mushrooms, which interior designers say will show itself in furniture, chairs, and ornaments in 2023.

In addition to these interior design trends, there are a few other things that you should consider when designing your boat’s interior. Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:

6. Lighting

Lighting is crucial for creating the right atmosphere in any space, especially on a boat. Consider incorporating a mix of task lighting and ambient lighting to create a warm and inviting space.

7. Durability

When choosing fabrics and materials for your boat’s interior, it’s important to consider durability. In addition, look for materials that are water-resistant and easy to clean, such as outdoor fabrics.

8. Personal Touches

Finally, remember to add some personal touches to your boat’s décor. This could be anything from family photos to the artwork you love. It can even mean customizing your tabletop ware to match the color and motif of your boat. These touches will make your yacht feel at home, even when you’re out on the water.

Remember, spring is about change and renewal. By incorporating some of these design trends into your boat’s interior décor, you can create a stylish and functional space that will make your time on the water even more enjoyable.

50-metre feadship superyacht Emerald listed for sale

50m rebuilt Feadship superyacht Emerald newly listed for sale

The 50.4-metre Feadship superyacht Emerald has been listed for sale with David Westwood and James Hall of TWW Yachts .

Originally delivered by the Dutch yard in 1990, she has undergone an extensive rebuild since she was purchased by her current owners in 2021. Her original exterior and naval architecture were the work of De Voogt Naval Architects , while Mulder Design is responsible for the new design.

Her rebuild at Balk Shipyard , completed in 2023, saw a completely new interior crafted by Design Unlimited , while the hull extension created one of the largest aft main deck spaces in her class. She also benefitted from a complete exterior repaint – in Orion Green for the hull and Aquila White for the superstructure – as well as new exterior layouts and upgraded technical systems.

Emerald was a finalist at the 2024 World Superyacht Awards and the broker noted that she "offers a unique opportunity to acquire a timeless Feadship that has been fully rebuilt to exceptional standards".

Together with Design Unlimited, the owners chose a modern and timeless theme for the interior, which now accommodates up to 12 guests in six cabins, including a forward-facing master and neighbouring VIP suite, while the four remaining guest suites are situated on the lower deck.

Stepping on board, the main saloon is now an open-plan design with a small partition separating the lounge and dining area. Meanwhile, the bridge deck saloon was extended, as was the bridge deck cockpit, where a single new crane replaces the two original cranes to assist with manoeuvring the yacht’s toys in and out of the water. When the space is clear of equipment, it can be used as an outdoor lounge and leisure area.

The rebuilt sundeck was also extended and now features a large spa bath forward, cosy seating area, sunbeds and wet bar to form the perfect space to enjoy the sun.

As part of the rebuild, the yacht’s mast and superstructure archway were redesigned to suit the modernised superyacht and the new equipment fitted to it.

Much of the equipment on board Emerald has been replaced with brand-new navigation systems, AV/IT communication systems and two zero-speed Quantum extendable stabilisation fins. The engines and generators which were new in 2015 have been fully serviced up to date.

The 470GT yacht for sale can reach a top speed of 14 knots and will cover a range of 6,200 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 11 knots.

Emerald is asking €25,000,000 with VAT paid.
