The 74-foot (22.5m) HATT TRICK has a timeless exterior design by Naval Architect Ed Monk Jr. that is sure to never go out of style.

Designed by Evan Marshall, the yacht’s interior is elegant, yet simple. The interior is adorned with varnished Sapele mahogany, beautiful stonework and new (2019) carpeting throughout. HATT TRICK’s open-flowing main deck offers excellent socializing areas along with media space. The motor yacht features a forward country galley with 180-degree views — it provides the ideal space for cooking as well as informal gathering.

The motor yacht features three comfortable staterooms, accommodating six guests. HATT TRICK’s master suite is unusually large, while her guest staterooms offer the comforts of home, enticing guests to want to stay longer. The yacht has accommodations for two crew members.

The flybridge provides the perfect spot to spend time whether cruising or at anchor as it offers incredible views of the cruising destination. Aft, the flybridge offers space for a 15-foot (4.57m) tender and a small sailboat. HATT TRICK also has a protected aft deck with matching cocktail tables and curved seats, which makes for a great place to relax and socialize.

HATT TRICK is easy to handle and maintain — her current owners have cruised on the yacht seasonally as just a husband and wife team. This Ocean Alexander has only seen light use. Kept in the Northern United States, the yacht is currently only used four months out of the year and kept in heated storage each winter.

Vessel overview.

The Ocean Alexander 74 arrangement plan includes three staterooms on the lower deck. The main deck features an expansive main saloon with wet bar, conversation corners and entertainment area.  Forward is the country kitchen which incorporates the lower helm station. 

Crew accommodations and engine room access is off the swimstep with transom access.  Walk-around sidedecks facilitate short-handed docking and access to the water is available via dual stairways to the swim platform.

The flybridge offers seating for the full ship’s company.  An expansive boatdeck is capable of carrying a 15’ tender and a small sailboat. 

The aft deck, protected from the elements, includes matching cocktail tables with curved seating.

HATT TRICK has been cruised with an owner/operator crew of two but her design accommodates six guests with grace and comfort, along with two crew.  

Master stateroom is amidships and full beam (20’), generously large for a yacht this size. King berth is on centerline with matching nightstands. The head includes twin sinks and shower compartment with premium fixtures and attractive stonework .  Storage includes a walk-in cedar closet, under-berth compartment and numerous drawers and lockers suitable for long-term living aboard. Media includes 32” Sony TV/DVD/Satellite (Hi-def) VIP with queen berth is forward. Head with shower is ensuite.  Amenities are similar to those in the Master including the sense of privacy and priviledge. Guest stateroom features twin berths, cedar closet and drawer storage, fit and finish of the same high quality as the other staterooms, ensuite head and shower. As the rest of the area shudders under polar wind chills, dads like Dave Dodge of Northbrook have armed themselves with snow shovels, garden hoses and one crystal-clear goal: to build the perfect skating rink.

Thanks to a nippy January, this has been a primo year for back-yard rinks, a cold-weather tradition among a growing number of families, mostly the nostalgic and hockey-crazed.

“It’s a throwback to a simpler time,” said Dodge, 46, before stepping onto his frozen yard with a hockey stick to scrimmage with two of his teenage kids.

Growing up in St. Louis, Dodge played “rat hockey,” outdoor pickup games where kids dropped the puck and battled it out with whoever showed up. One of the best times to hit a nearby pond was after supper, as the sky grew inky and the stars came out.

“You’d go outside at night,” recalled Dodge, “strap on your skates, and play till you couldn’t feel your nose or your toes.”

Now he and an increasing number of Baby Boomers–often North Shore fathers, who provide most of the labor and the bucks–are trying to re-create that winter wonder-world, where skates clack against ice hard as white marble and neighborhoods resonate with the slap of wood against puck.

During the half-dozen winters that Kevin Grant, 39, has turned the hose on his back-yard in Wilmette, “This is the best ice we’ve had,” he said. “The last three weeks, I’d say, have been great.”

And the good skating weather is expected to last. WGN-Ch. 9 meteorologist Tom Skilling predicts the temperatures will be rink-friendly for the next several weeks, a blessing–if you look at it that way–after a relatively warm December and early January.

“No extended thaws are in sight,” Skilling said. “It looks like it will be a pretty good period for ice skating all the way into early February. The winter had been running very mild to this point, but we’re finally having cold weather that will stick around.”

January temperatures in the Chicago area have run above normal “for the past five or six years,” said Bill Nelson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. Aside from highs of 61 degrees on Jan. 2 and 52 degrees on Jan. 3 recorded at O’Hare International Airport, 2004 has provided a more “average” January, even though snowfall is well below normal, Nelson said.

One to 3 inches of snow are possible on Friday, and daytime highs are expected to be in the mid- to upper-20s over the weekend. But after that, “We’re looking for another cold spell, probably next week,” Nelson said. “But not as cold as it has been.”

It’s a busy time of year for Larry Versino of the Wilmette Bicycle & Sport Shop, widely considered by his North Shore customers to be the guru of back-yard ice rinks.

Versino, 50, helped pour his first rink in a neighbor’s back yard when he was a teenager. Today, he advises dozens of customers on the finer points of building a structure with plywood sides, lining it with a sheet of plastic and keeping the ice shoveled and groomed.

It’s a lot of work. But there’s that nostalgia thing.

“Maybe it’s the freshness of the air or being outside under the sky,” Versino said. “Music outside sounds different than when you’re inside. The blade hitting the ice has a crisp sound. It’s cold outside, but you’re warm.”

Hockey takes off

More interest in hockey is also feeding the steady growth in homemade rinks, which can cost in the neighborhood of $400, Versino said. Parents are looking for more “ice time” for their kids who want to advance in the sport.

And when one neighbor builds a rink, it’s likely that somebody down the block will catch skating fever too.

“Just today I got a call from a woman who said she wanted to build a rink to get her kids out of the house,” Versino said. “It’s like the winter swimming pool.”

Not all the recent skating has been on back-yard rinks. Thanks to the cold weather, the kids at Sears School in Kenilworth were finally able to start their physical education unit in ice skating this week. For 30 years, the Kenilworth Park District has placed a rink atop the school’s athletic fields so coach Bill Doll and his staff can lead students in games and skating lessons.

“It gives them an opportunity to do something in the winter other than being in the gym,” Doll said. “The kids get kind of excited. You see them coming out all bundled up.”

Despite the noise and the lights most families install for after-dark skating, neighbors rarely complain, said Wayne Hanson, director of development for Northbrook. Mike Kennedy, code enforcer for Wilmette, said he has never received a complaint about a back-yard rink.

In Grant’s back yard, the stereo’s pumped and another log blazes in the patio fire pit. Daughter Julia, 5, rosy-cheeked under a periwinkle-blue hat, glides to the net and finesses a snowplow stop. On request, she demonstrates a figure-skater’s spin.

A lot like dad

Grant sets up his rink each year around Thanksgiving, in part because his dad did the same for him. “It wasn’t quite as elaborate,” said Grant, who coaches his three young kids in hockey.

“When I come out here,” he said, nodding to his son Mitchell, 11, and a friend, “I feel like I’m their age again.”

The skating time that dads and kids seem to pine for most is after dark, when the magic of ice becomes clearest of all.

“At night, the sky’s kind of purple,” said David Parsons, 12, standing on the Wilmette rink built most winters by his dad, Bill. “It’s really a blast. When you play hockey, you don’t care about anything else.”

As twilight falls and the streetlights come on, David plays one-on-one with Stephen Derluguian, 13, his friend since 1st grade. Just outside the rink, their shoes lie in a jumble in the snow.

The cold, sharp air lends itself to private moments, when a kid with a hockey stick can be transported just about anywhere. Sometimes, David confides, he pretends he’s in the championship, scoring a goal in front of millions of cheering fans.

“You’re in the Olympic Games,” he said. “And you win the whole thing.”
