The Essential Guide to Yacht Crew Team Building

  • by yachtman
  • September 22, 2023 August 26, 2023

yacht team

No doubt, team building is key for a successful yacht crew. Together, they can tackle any challenge and make sailing an unforgettable experience.

To work together, crew members must combine their individual skills and communicate well. Team-building activities, such as water sports and treasure hunts , are great for trust-building, problem solving, and creating strong memories.

A dramatic example of the power of team building is seen in Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition of 1914 . Despite being trapped in ice, Shackleton and his crew kept morale high and survived due to their shared goals and support for one another.

Importance of Yacht Crew Team Building

Team building is key to the success of any yacht crew. A good team means smooth operations, efficient communication and excellent performance. Understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses helps crew members work together and provide great service to guests.

Team building encourages trust and camaraderie. It unites the crew and sets shared goals. Activities spark open communication, allowing crew members to express their ideas and concerns. This helps them tackle problems and build relationships.

Team building boosts morale and motivation. Activities show crew members their value and contributions. When they feel supported by their colleagues, they are more likely to perform better.

Yacht crew team building focuses on adaptability and resilience. Exercises help them develop skills like collaboration, flexibility and decision-making. These come in handy when facing unexpected challenges.

Studies show companies that invest in team building have higher employee satisfaction and productivity. Yacht owners who prioritize team building will create a better working environment and provide a better guest experience.

Benefits of Yacht Crew Team Building

To enhance your yacht crew team building, delve into the benefits of fostering better communication and collaboration, increasing trust and camaraderie, and improving problem-solving skills. These sub-sections offer solutions that can bolster the effectiveness and cohesiveness of your yacht crew, leading to a more successful and enjoyable sailing experience.

Enhanced Communication and Collaboration

Improved Coordination: Better communication encourages crew members to work together more effectively. This leads to smoother sailing and better operations.

Clear Instructions: Open communication channels help crew members convey instructions easily. This leads to better understanding and execution of tasks.

Stronger Relationships: Regular collaboration helps crew members have stronger relationships. This increases trust and camaraderie on board.

Innovative Problem Solving: When discussing ideas, crews can come up with innovative solutions for challenges.

Enhanced Safety: Clear communication is essential for everyone’s safety. Improved collaboration makes it easier to respond to emergencies and reduce risks.

Promotes Efficiency: Good communication and collaboration optimize workflow, leading to better yacht operations.

Also, enhanced communication and collaboration can improve customer satisfaction. Boat International found that teams with good communication are 20% more likely to reach their goals.

Increased Trust and Camaraderie

Yacht crew team-building activities are great for building trust and camaraderie. Here’s why:

  • Improved Communication : With team-building exercises, crew members can communicate better. That leads to better coordination during work, and more trust among the team.
  • Enhanced Problem-Solving : Doing team challenges improves individuals’ problem-solving skills. This builds trust as members rely on each other for support.
  • Strengthened Team Spirit : Exercises help build unity and belongingness. This creates an atmosphere where everyone feels valued – and enhances camaraderie.
  • Increased Adaptability : Crew members develop skills for the dynamic environment of yachting. Adaptability strengthens trust among teammates.

Plus, team-building activities provide opportunities for crew members to understand different perspectives without hierarchies or superiority.

Fun Fact : 95% of superyacht crews experienced improved teamwork after team-building activities!

Improved Problem-Solving Skills

Team building can boost problem-solving skills of yacht crew members. There are three key ways in which it helps:

  • Enhanced Communication – Team building activities help crew communicate effectively and convey ideas/concerns when solving problems.
  • Creative Thinking – Exercises promote creative thinking, leading to innovative solutions.
  • Collaboration & Cooperation – Promotes collaboration and cooperation between crew members, helping them work together for successful resolutions.

Plus, team building activities also build trust and camaraderie, creating a cohesive unit with improved problem-solving capabilities.

Harvard Business School conducted a study which revealed that teams engaging in team building activities had a 30% increase in their ability to solve complex problems efficiently.

Steps to Implement Yacht Crew Team Building

To implement effective yacht crew team building, assess the needs of the crew and choose appropriate activities. Plan and schedule team building events, and facilitate effective sessions to strengthen the team bond. With these steps, you can enhance teamwork and communication among crew members, resulting in a more cohesive and efficient yacht crew.

Assess the Needs of the Crew

Assessing the needs of the crew is vital for effective yacht team-building. Understand their needs and you can form a cohesive, motivated team. Let’s look deeper.

Needs include:

  • Technical Competence – Evaluate their knowledge and expertise for roles.
  • Communication Skills – Assess how they communicate with each other and guests.
  • Leadership Abilities – Identify individuals with potential to lead.
  • Teamwork Skills – Evaluate their collaboration and cooperation.
  • Cultural Awareness – See if crew are sensitive to cultural backgrounds and provide excellent service.
  • Problem-Solving Skills – Assess their ability to think critically and find solutions in challenging situations.

Considering all these is important. Also, gather feedback from the crew to know their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

Reassess the needs of the crew regularly so you can address any gaps in skills and areas for improvement, leading to a highly functioning team onboard your yacht.

Choose Appropriate Team Building Activities

Choosing the right team building activities is essential for making a strong and united yacht crew. These activities help to build trust, better communication, and boost team work amongst team members. Consider these points when deciding:

  • Do physical challenges such as sailing races or water sports to help with teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Have team-building exercises that focus on trust and working together, like trust falls or obstacle courses blindfolded .
  • Play interactive games and puzzles that need problem-solving and thinking skills to promote teamwork and creativity.
  • Plan social events or outings outside of work hours to connect and strengthen relationships amongst the crew.
  • Do group discussions or workshops to address conflict resolution strategies and better communication .
  • Have training sessions tailored to the needs of the crew, like leadership development or skill-specific workshops .

Also, it’s important to think about each crew member’s unique dynamics while picking activities. Some people may be better in competitive settings but others prefer more cooperative ones. By making activities fit the strengths and preferences of the crew, you can boost their participation and engagement.

Here are some ideas for suitable team building activities:

  • Do a “treasure hunt” where teams work together solving clues that lead to a hidden prize. This promotes problem-solving, communication, and teamwork.
  • Have a cooking competition where teams make a meal with limited resources. This encourages cooperation, creativity, and adaptability, as well as builds camaraderie among the crew.
  • Make a ropes course challenge where teams navigate through physical obstacles that need coordination, trust-building, and effective communication.

These suggestions work because they focus on elements of teamwork, communication, problem-solving, adaptation, and trust-building. They also provide a break from the usual routine and let the crew bond on a personal level, raising morale and productivity. By choosing the right team building activities, yacht crews can have an atmosphere of trust, collaboration, and excellent team work.

Plan and Schedule Team Building Events

Planning and scheduling team building activities is vital for a successful yacht crew. Here are some tips to help make this process successful:

  • Identify goals: Clearly understand the objectives of the events to match the crew’s development needs.
  • Choose activities: Select activities that promote collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and trust-building.
  • Set schedule: Create a timetable for the events. Make sure they don’t interfere with daily operations and allow enough time for participation and debriefing.
  • Evaluate and refine: Assess the effectiveness of each event to improve future planning. Ask for feedback from the crew to tailor future activities.

In addition, you must consider factors like location, resources required, and budget while planning. With well-planned and scheduled events, yacht crews can boost their teamwork skills.

Now, I’ll share a heartening story. A yacht crew operating in tough conditions organized a team building event that combined navigation and rescue simulations. This exercise not only improved their technical abilities but also fostered camaraderie and trust among the crew. Such well-planned events make a great contribution to successful sailing.

Remember, proper planning and scheduling of team building events are essential for developing a unified yacht crew that can handle any obstacle. So, get creative, organize engaging activities, and watch your team spirit soar!

Facilitate Effective Team Building Sessions

Team-building is key for a yacht crew. It helps build trust, enhance communication, and create a positive work environment.

Use activities and strategies to strengthen the bond and performance. Here are 6 strategies :

  • Inclusion: Involve everyone, regardless of rank or experience, and make sure everyone feels comfortable to share their ideas.
  • Goals: Clearly define the objectives of the session to ensure everyone is working towards the same outcome.
  • Exercises: Engage in activities that encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and communication.
  • Reflection and Feedback: After each activity or exercise, reflect on experiences and give feedback.
  • Bonding: Organize social events to help build personal connections.
  • Progress: Regularly evaluate the team building sessions with feedback from the crew members.

Tailor the approach to the unique dynamics of the yacht crew. A real-life example highlights the importance of team building – a yacht crew resolved conflicts and improved collaboration, resulting in a more efficient working environment.

Invest time and effort in facilitating effective team building sessions for yacht crews!

Examples of Successful Yacht Crew Team Building Activities

To strengthen your yacht crew’s unity and collaboration, explore successful team building activities. Engage your team through team building games and challenges, outdoor bonding activities, and training and development workshops. These activities foster strong teamwork, build trust, and enhance communication skills among crew members. Get ready to unleash your crew’s potential and sail towards success.

Team Building Games and Challenges

Team Building Games and Challenges can be beneficial for yacht crews. Let’s take a look at the table below.

Each game has its own benefits. The Escape Room Challenge improves problem-solving. The Teamwork Obstacle Course promotes collaboration and trust. The Navigation Challenge enhances communication and decision-making. Lastly, the Solve-The-Puzzle Race encourages critical thinking and quick problem-solving.

By incorporating these activities, yacht crews can learn the importance of teamwork, trust-building, communication, problem-solving, collaboration, and quick decision-making. These skills are vital for a successful crew. Therefore, implementing these suggestions can help team building endeavors.

Outdoor Bonding Activities

Split the crew into teams for a scavenger hunt! Give them a list of items to find on the yacht or nearby locations.

Organize sailing regattas for friendly competition between different yachts. This will help build teamwork.

Engage in beach cleanups to bring the crew closer and raise awareness about protecting the oceans.

Water sports challenges like paddleboarding and kayaking can help build trust and communication skills.

Organize cooking contests to showcase crew members’ culinary skills. This fosters collaboration and creates a fun atmosphere.

To make these outdoor activities even more special, go for themed scavenger hunts and introduce new water sports equipment. Tailor the activities to suit your yacht’s culture and ensure everyone’s participation.

Pro Tip: Before planning any outdoor bonding activity, take into account the physical abilities and preferences of each crew member. This is to make sure everyone is included and has a great time!

Training and Development Workshops

Workshops provide an opportunity to learn new skills and techniques related to yacht roles and responsibilities. It’s a platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and learn from each other’s expertise.

Interactive sessions promote effective communication, fostering a cooperative work environment.

Exercises and simulations allow crew members to apply learning in real-life scenarios on a yacht.

Topics may cover safety procedures, emergency response protocols, guest service standards, and navigation techniques.

Participation boosts individual skills and strengthens overall teamwork.

Industry experts and guest speakers add to the learning process with valuable insights from their maritime experience.

Captain Jack Roberts is a remarkable example, organizing a workshop focused on crisis management. He shared personal experiences of unforeseen emergencies at sea.

Role-playing exercises simulated challenging scenarios, allowing crew to gain practical problem-solving skills and work together under pressure.

Evaluating the Impact of Yacht Crew Team Building

To evaluate the impact of yacht crew team building and maximize its effectiveness, gather feedback from crew members and assess the overall team performance. This will provide valuable insights into the success and areas of improvement for the team.

Gathering Feedback from Crew Members

Gathering feedback is vital for assessing the effect of yacht crew team building. Crew members’ insights provide significant data to measure the usefulness of team-building activities and make needed improvements.

  • Encourage talking: Create an environment where crew members feel at ease discussing their views and thoughts.
  • Offer anonymous feedback options: Offer channels or platforms where crew members can express their opinions anonymously, boosting truthfulness and clarity.
  • Carry out regular surveys: Use online survey tools to collect feedback on aspects such as team dynamics, communication, and overall satisfaction.
  • Have one-on-one meetings: Have private talks with crew members to get personalized feedback. This allows for deeper conversations and the chance to address particular issues.
  • Install suggestion boxes: Place suggestion boxes in common areas onboard, enabling crew members to submit written feedback whenever they want.
  • Facilitate group discussions: Organize regular team gatherings or workshops to promote open conversation among crew members. This cultivates brainstorming and encourages joining forces.

Think about setting up a rotating feedback system as well, where different crew members are in charge of gathering feedback from their teammates periodically. This makes sure everyone has a chance to share their ideas and avoids bias in the assessment procedure.

Pro Tip: Recognize and appreciate the efforts made by crew members who give valuable feedback. This builds a culture of continuous improvement and motivates active involvement in future evaluation processes.

Assessing the Overall Team Performance

Assessing team performance is a must for successful yacht crew team building. Evaluation of the team’s strengths and areas of improvement is key to boosting cohesion, communication, and productivity.

To assess team performance, several factors are key. One is the team’s ability to collaborate, support, and communicate during operations & leisure activities. Additionally, assessing individual contributions to the team dynamic is vital.

Task allocation & goal setting should also be evaluated. Are tasks assigned based on individual strengths & skills? Are goals clear & achievable? Aligned with the yacht’s mission?

Communication patterns must also be assessed. Are there breakdowns in communication channels? Effective communication is key for safety & efficiency.

Regular feedback sessions & ongoing training are recommended. They focus on topics such as effective communication, conflict resolution, & problem-solving skills. By investing in teamwork development, crew members can excel.

As we reach the end of this important guide, it is obvious that crew team building is essential for a cohesive and successful crew. Communication, trust, and collaboration are key to overcoming hurdles and accomplishing goals.

We have discussed the importance of communication amongst team members. It is necessary to have open dialogue to foster understanding and unity. Additionally, we have looked at the significance of trust within a crew. Trust is the cornerstone of effective teamwork and smooth operations.

We have investigated different ways to better team building aboard a yacht. Team bonding activities and interactive training sessions provide great opportunities for crew members to bond and develop relationships that will lead to successful collaborations.

Studies show that teams that partake in team building activities have higher job satisfaction and work more efficiently. Boat International Media published this in 2018.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing names America’s Cup sailing team

The Swiss-flagged America's Cup team, Alinghi Red Bull Racing has named the key members of their sailing squad as they gear up for the 37th America's Cup

yacht team

America’s Cup team Alinghi Red Bull Racing has named the key members of their sailing team as the Swiss-flagged squad prepares their challenge for the 37th America’s Cup , which will take place in Barcelona, Spain in 2024 .

The Ernesto Bertarelli -backed Alinghi racing team officially announced that they would be entering the 37th America’s Cup in December 2021, after months of speculation. Their entry marks a return of the two-time America’s Cup-winning Alinghi team after over a decade out of the competition.

At the same time Alinghi also announced that they would be teaming up with F1 team, Red Bull Racing, forming the America’s Cup team Alinghi Red Bull Racing . This partnership follows Challenger of Record for the 37th America’s Cup , INEOS Britannia pairing up with the Mercedes F1 team – a clear signal of how hyper-technologically advanced this new period of America’s Cup sailing is in the complex foiling monohull, AC75 class .

Ahead of their official entry announcement, there had been speculation as to which club Alinghi would represent, as the America’s Cup 100 % nationality rule confirmed in the Protocol for the 37th America’s Cup requires all sailors to be passport holders of the nation they represent, thus limiting the ability to buy overseas talent into the land-locked country.

However, in that initial statement of entry, it was confirmed that they will once again represent the Société Nautique de Genève, requiring all the team to be Swiss, and the team’s AC75 to be built in Switzerland.

The last time Alinghi were in an America’s Cup competition was the 2010 Deed of Gift match when their huge catamaran was defeated by Oracle Team USA’s wing-sailed trimaran. Photo: Jose Delgado / Alinghi

Now, after many months of waiting, the team has revealed their key lineup of sailors who will be tasked with getting to grips with the AC75 foiling monohull in their bid to win the most sought after trophy in sailing.

The team includes a number of sailors who are, whilst not exactly household names, familiar to those with an interest in high performance racing. However, many of the crew will also be unfamiliar to Cup fans.

This Alinghi team is one based on building home grown, emerging talent – a very different proposition to the 2003 campaign when Alinghi famously poached many of Team New Zealand’s talented sailors.

Heading up the group – and likely to be responsible for helming the team’s AC75 in one way or another (teams may follow the route taken by Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the 36th America’s Cup and have dual port tack and starboard tack helmsmen) is Arnaud Psarofaghis. Psarofaghis is a very experienced foiling sailor who has competed in everything from foiling Moths to SailGP and the foiling GC32 circuit – and has previously been involved with French America’s Cup project, Groupama Team France.

The team is nominally divided into two categories, the ‘driving group’ and ‘power group’. This split reflects the dual needs of a sailing team in the modern Cup era, as the possibility of cyclors (as developed by Emirates Team New Zealand for their 2017 America’s Cup win ) may return for this Cup competition.

The ‘driving group’ will be responsible for roles like helm, tactics, flight control, sail trim etc. while the ‘power group’ will be generating the power needed to trim foils and sails either on cyclor-style or traditional pedestal winch grinding stations.

The Alinghi Red Bull Racing team are:

Maxime Bachelin Matias Bühler Nicolas Charbonnier Lucien Cujean Yves Detrey Augustin Maillefer Bryan Mettraux Arnaud Psarofaghis

Power group:

Arthur Cevey Barnabé Delarze Nicolas Rolaz Théry Schir Nils Theuninck Florian Trüb

These are crew members who Psarofaghis – who’s been at the heart of the project and heavily involved in recruitment – knows well. “Going on this adventure with friends I’ve known since childhood and people I’ve been working with for over 20 years is very exciting,” the 33-year-old said. “Even if I haven’t necessarily sailed with them, this bond is a great advantage.

“We understand each other, which will make communication so much easier. And that’s vital, because on board, good communication is key. And off the boat too: we know when one of us is going through a rough patch, how to talk with them, and when… The only thing that counts is performance, and it’s with this in mind that the teams will be put together.”

“It wasn’t an easy choice, we’re lucky to have excellent potential in Switzerland,” head coach Nils Frei explained. He’s the one who conducted the recruitment jointly with Pierre-Yves Jorand, co-general manager in charge of sports operations. The first sailors who were chosen contributed to the decision-making. “Character, attitude and development potential are as important as skill,” Jorand adds.

Alinghi teams up with Red Bull Racing F1 for 37th America’s Cup

Swiss sailing team Alinghi has confirmed that it is entering the 37th America’s Cup, in a new team partnership as…

The team does acknowledge the limited Cup experience of the group in their announcement, stating that:

However talented they are, these sailors have had no experience in the America’s Cup yet. A high-level training schedule has therefore been put in place on the water with renowned coaches and internationally recognised designers.

Reflecting the physical needs of a sailing team in the modern America’s Cup it is a very youthful team, with the youngest member being 22 year old Nicolas Rolaz – who won the junior class Optimist World Championship as recently as 2014.

Since coming out of the Cup competition, following their defeat to Oracle USA in the 2010 Deed of Gift match, the Alinghi team has since been competing at Swiss lake events, including the T35 circuit.

Bertarelli points out the team has been sailing in fast and foiling boats, with a young Swiss team so does not consider their relative lack of Cup experience to be an issue. “We expected the [100% nationality] rule, and we’re ready,” he says as the team gears up to challenge for another America’s Cup cycle.

Club Team Racing Gets Its Due

  • By Gary Jobson
  • May 16, 2023

Corinthian YC

For Doug Sabin, one approach to getting more of his yacht-club peers active and on the water was simple: adult team racing. Sailing’s energetic and all-encompassing discipline, Sabin knew, would appeal to younger members at Marblehead’s Corinthian YC, and he was right. Corinthian’s success in building a team-racing program and engaging its membership in a new and exciting way is a great example for any club or organization looking to jump-start its stagnant sailing program.

Team racing is a strategic battle where boat position, clever tactics, precise boathandling, tactical skill and teamwork are the ingredients for success. The top teams practice maneuvers to gain an advantage. When one team is winning, it is on defense, and when a team is losing, they are on offense. Like other sports, including basketball and hockey, there are man-to-man matchups and zone defenses. It is a fast-moving game as positions change. Sailors must be quick at math as the scores change. The most popular format is three boats versus three matches. Watch a competitive intercollegiate team race and you will see teams attacking and trading the lead during fast-paced maneuvers at turning marks. Often there will be a lot of noise during these moments, although the best teams are remarkably quiet as they execute their plays. Champion teams are fluid and make it look like ballet.

It’s no surprise to me that participation in team racing has grown dramatically over the past 20 years in several yacht clubs—domestically and abroad. Clubs that have invested in building and growing their programs have seen membership rosters grow as a direct result. Sabin, who sailed at MIT, says the stakeholders at Corinthian recognized that providing boats for sailing is one viable way to attract young members.

When they initiated the team-racing program, they borrowed boats, but as the local one-design Sonar fleet faded, the three yacht clubs on Marblehead Harbor (Corinthian, Eastern and Boston) purchased a dozen used Sonars, which allowed them to have two sets of boats for team racing.

“For most of my career, Eastern and Boston were the strongest sailing clubs in the harbor,” Sabin says. “Thanks to team racing, Corinthian is now a very strong sailing club.”

If there’s any doubt to Sabin’s assessment of Corinthian’s competitive standing today, consider that he, along with younger members Wade Waddell, Miranda Bakos and Duncan Swain, won the New York YC Resolute Cup last September. That win qualified Corinthian for the Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup in the fall of 2023, the club’s marquee international amateur keelboat championship.

While the Resolute Cup was a fleet-racing competition, Sabin says their triumph over many of the United States’ premier yacht-club teams was in a large part due to their team-racing focus. “None of us had sailed in the Resolute [Cup] before. The reason we were successful is that we have this tight definition of what keelboat sailing is at Corinthian. So, we could fall into our roles and work together as a team very quickly. We practiced in an RS21 against Eastern YC for about two weeks before the regatta. We all knew how to communicate, and we knew our roles because of team racing.”

For Corinthian to get its team race program up and running at full speed, it tapped two-time Olympian Tim Wadlow. “For us, it was connecting with the college sailors. It’s all about youth and bringing those people into the club. Tim is a team-racing world champion, and with people of that level, we got into organized practices. He encouraged us to use spinnakers, which really changes the game quite a bit. The game really begins at the windward mark with the spinnaker because you are so much more powerful downwind. Tim understood that and made it part of our practice.”

For a yacht club to acquire a fleet of boats requires a big investment, but the use of small and stable keelboats allows for a wider range of ages to get in on the action. Sabin says they’re hoping to purchase a new fleet of Sonars that would be owned by all three yacht clubs within the next year. “Both New York YC and Seawanhaka Corinthian YC (in New York) have fleets,” Sabin says. “We are following their model.”

Corinthian team racers

The Annapolis YC has ordered a fleet of 14 new Sonars with the goal of upgrading members’ team-racing skills and attracting new members. Past commodore Jonathan Bartlett, who initiated the program, says: “The biggest reason we ordered the boats was to go play in the team-racing arena. We have to learn to sail the boats and how they race. Where is the best team racing? It’s in New England.”

Sonars, designed by Bruce Kirby and first built in 1980, are now being built in England, where the only set of molds still exists. Bartlett credits Annapolis YC’s incoming rear commodore, Ted Kaczmarski, for selecting the Sonar and convincing the club’s board to provide the funding, saying, “It is a good investment.”

Creating a fleet of yacht-club-owned boats is a big operational and financial undertaking. As with all boats, there are considerations and budgeting for storage requirements, routine maintenance, insurance costs, and equitable scheduling of the use of the fleet among members. There is a long list of possible applications for a fleet of boats in addition to team racing, which could include adult-program sailing instruction, recreational daysailing, clinics, weeknight races and invitational regattas. Some clubs maintain two sets of sails for their fleet, one for recreation and instruction, and another reserved for racing. Including the club’s burgee on the sails and naming the boats after club luminaries, donors or famous yachts add to the spirit. Also, it’s important that a fleet be maintained equally so the boats sail at the same speed.

Another important consideration is to make sure the boats can launch easily. Minimal time preparing for sailing or putting boats away is an attractive factor. An organization looking to purchase a fleet for the first time might consider an existing fleet of used boats. A few sources of funding might include a grant from a club, a group of members creating a syndicate to purchase individual boats, donations, charter fees (try to keep fees at a modest level) or foundation grants. The class of boat selected is an important factor. The selection criteria centers around the cost, storage, typical sailing venue and number of crew. It must, of course, be a suitable boat for the prevailing wind conditions.

Team racing is practiced by people of all ages—the Hinman Masters and Hinman Grandmasters regattas are popular events—and the engagement goes beyond younger sailors. Corinthian’s program, Sabin says, has boosted participation among female members, which resulted in the creation of the Thayer Cup, its first women’s team-racing regatta using spinnakers.

A team race event typically engages many other supporting roles as well, from race officials to umpires and volunteers. “We always use umpires for our planned events,” Sabin says. “We don’t use umpires for practices or for pickup team racing on Thursday nights.”

Umpires, he adds, typically take the time to discuss on-the-water calls with competitors after racing, which makes it a learning experience for everyone. They want to make accurate rulings and learn from the sailors’ input. It is a two-way street, and I would add that damage deposits at regattas are an effective deterrent to collisions.

My first article in this magazine appeared in the spring of 1974, and at the time, I advocated for team racing to be included in the Olympic Games. Now, 49 years later, I still believe sailing at the Olympics could use freshening up. The Games hosts 10 classes, and team racing would be a welcome addition and generate top international competition with exciting, fast-paced, athletic sailing on a small course that’s certainly broadcast-friendly.

Perhaps it’s time we have that conversation again.

4 Great But Easy Yacht Team Bonding Activities All Managers Can Do Without Getting Stressed Up For Planning

admin December 27, 2022 events

Best team bonding practices and activities in the yacht

Differences Between Team Bonding Activities And Team Building Activities

Team building activities and team bonding activities are similar in that they both involve bringing members of a team together to improve their ability to work well together. However, there are some key differences between the two.

Team building activities are structured activities that are designed to help improve specific aspects of a team’s performance, such as communication, problem-solving, or decision-making. These activities often have a clear goal or objective, and they may involve challenges or simulations that require team members to work together to overcome obstacles and achieve their goal. They may be more physically or mentally challenging, such as team sports or puzzle-solving games

[ Find out more about the fun team building activities onboard the yacht ]

Team bonding activities, on the other hand, are more informal and focused on building relationships and camaraderie among team members. These activities may be social in nature, such as team lunches or outings. The goal of team bonding activities is to bring team members closer together and foster a sense of trust and support within the team.

Overall, team building activities are more focused on improving the team’s ability to work together effectively, while team bonding activities are focused on fostering a positive team culture and strong relationships among team members. Both types of activities can be valuable for teams, and many organizations choose to incorporate both into their team-building efforts.

What Are The Team Bonding Activities

Team bonding activities can encourage social gathering in any organisations, including companies. Now that social distancing rules and restrictions have been lifted amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, there are huge opportunities for organisations to bond together in a team setting again. But what activities can organisations suggest onboard the yacht when they do the yacht chartering?

Here is a suggested list of team bonding activities you can do in our yacht:

Personality Differences

Before the trip, plan for the personality test or quiz to find out what your employees are. It will be good for all staff to understand each other better through the detailed personality tests. Some of the accredited ones are MBTI and DISC.

Read about the personality tests types – https://www.workstyle.io/best-personality-test

Music Video Challenge

What better kind of team bonding activity can we do inside the yacht, than a simple music video challenge, which is also called a charade? You can make a video by filming with a storyline and a dialogue script and then input the music inside manually. This team bonding activity fosters some verbal and non-verbal form of communication with some interpersonal skills.

Mental Treasure Hunt

The yacht is suitable for scavenger hunt, given that the space has a few hidden spots. You can also go simple with some brain teasers and mental puzzles for about 3 to 4 persons in a team to get some fresh burst of team bonding. It’s simple yet effective to make good use of the time onboard. The team that scores the most puzzles in a specific time wins.

Normal Chill – Rest And Relax Social Gathering

How about just a little chill by the sea in the outdoors while you can feel wind blowing onto your face (as long as the wind is not too gusty)? Talk about social life, hobby, or talk about a common interesting topic, but refrain from talking about too much work-related or business-related stuffs so as to avoid any conflicts. Also, try not to touch on sensitive topics like politics or religion.

You can just chill out with drinks and some light snacks on the tables we provide for you.

Important Things To Consider During Team Bonding

If you’re looking for a relaxing work or business experience, all of these free team building activities sound like fun and productive options. During team building, there are some things to keep in mind because certain laws must be followed:

Safety of a Marine Vessel

It is imperative that the yacht’s safety be upheld at all times. Try not to play till you incidentally fall into the ocean and get suffocated. Proper Waste Disposal All marine vessels, regardless of size, whether they are a catamaran, cruise, or a canoe, must abide by the rules and regulations set by the Marine Port of Authority Singapore (MPA), the National Environmental Agency (NEA), and the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment (MSE). Even if you wish to jump into the sea for leisure, make sure the yacht is still because a moving yacht may injure you if the rudders accidentally slice you. We cannot guarantee there are trained lifeguards around although the skippers can assist should you accidentally fall into the sea and are unable to swim.

Proper Waste Disposal

All marine vessels, regardless of size—catamaran, cruise, or canoe—must abide by the rules and regulations set by the Marine Port of Authority Singapore (MPA), the National Environmental Agency (NEA), and the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment (MSE). We cannot guarantee that there will be trained lifeguards present, but the skippers can assist you if you accidentally fall into the sea and are unable to swim.

The non-profit organization Ocean Conservancy (2018), which oversees the International Coastal Cleanup, identifies foam fragments, cigarette butts, and plastic fragments as the top three types of litter on Singapore’s beaches (source). The fourth most found litter was the plastic drink bottles which numbered around almost 12,600.

We are committed to reducing marine pollution to save the environment and marine life from harm. If you were found littering the sea by law enforcement, your fine would start at $300. While you are onboard the yacht, please make sure that you do not purposefully dump trash into the water.

Read why water environmental pollution consideration is so important today

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

yacht team

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

yacht team

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

yacht team

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

yacht team

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

yacht team

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

yacht team

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

yacht team

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

  • The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
  • The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
  • Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8. The Harbor Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."
